NOT SO RANDOM.

Have you ever considered that the most pivotal moments in life might not be as random as they seem?

On December 31st, New Years Eve, I will celebrate 18 years of marriage to my husband, John Henry Scott III. This episode is dedicated to him. I hope this episode inspires you to breathe in deeply and acknowledge the encounters in your life that are anything but random. The extraordinary can often masquerade as mundance moments and encounters that have the potential to profoundly shape our lives. As you listen, I urge you to recognize and cherish the not so random threads in your own life.

Thanks for listening.

From your first date to the birth of your child, or even a seemingly ordinary moment that left you breathless, we will discover how gratitude offers a respite in the whirlwind of emotions that life throws at us. So, settle down and grab your coffee, as we find gratitude in all the ordinary and extraordinary moments that make up our lives.

I CHOOSE TO LIVE. There are some books that touch your heart in a very special way. The message just stays with you. Letshego's memoir of her late husband Gugulethu Zulu was one of those books for me. I knew after I finished the final page that I wanted to have her on my podcast. One of the quotes in her book is "If Not, Why Not". I later learned that this is the quote that prompted her to say yes to being a houseguest on the podcast. Letshego takes us on a journey of adventure, love, loss and her decision to choose life even after losing her husband. The book teaches us how to be resilient after loss; the loss of a loved one, a job, a business, a dream or whatever the loss is that we are experiencing.

We want to give away this book to 5 listeners. If you want a copy of this book all you have to do is leave a review, take a screenshot and dm me on Instagram @iamportiascott.

We need your help to help 1250 girls stay in school during their monthly cycles by donating to Caring4Girls.

WE ARE TIRED. In this bonus episode I had an open and honest conversation about the heartbreak of so many African Americans when we see yet another man or woman shot for just being black. On February 23, 2020, Ahmaud Arbery was killed for #runningwhileblack. This episode is a letter from a black mama to America.

CHEMISTRY. This week's episode was recorded live during our daily show, Wake Up & Show Up Live. In the midst of everything that is going on in the world, I wanted to bring a little reprieve with a love story that was created in the middle of the desert in Iraq during war. Every now and then we find ourselves in hard, uncomfortable and confusing situations but you never know what can be birthed during these times.

LABOR PAINS. In this week's episode I talk about what I would say to 17-year-old Portia. While my mother was looking through old stuff she found a pay stub from December 18, 1996. I tried hard to remember the emotions from that day, even that time period, and I couldn't. We have tough moments and seasons but they don't last forever and sometimes we even forget what the pain felt like.

I BELONG HERE. I am back from my 10-day holiday to South Africa and I am still jet-lagged. Since we have returned, John Henry and I have spent time telling our friends and family about the trip and answering as many questions as possible. What better way to answer the questions with one shot than to put it in a podcast episode. I could literally talk about Johannesburg all day but the most beautiful part of our holiday was the people.

SEEDS OF GREATNESS. I am off preparing for a 10-day vacation to South Africa where it all started. Sitting in my place is our resident houseguest, John Henry Scott III. This week's episode was inspired by a quote by the incomparable Langston Hughes - "Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby." We all contain seeds of greatness, seeds of uniqueness and significance inside of us but it is our responsibility to allow those seeds to be watered. Without rain, what is invested will not come to fruition. Listen as John gives us acrostics for the words 'rain' and 'sing' that will help us understand the importance of allowing our seeds to be watered.

WE DA BEST PODCAST! Lol...okay I felt like DJ Khaled for a minute.

PARENT YOUR WAY. We are tackling parent bashing. No more bashing, no more negative narratives and no more unrealistic expectations. Parenting is one of the most rewarding opportunities we get in life, but it's not always easy. We all need a reminder that we are doing a good job. In this episode I discuss 5 parenting lessons:

  1. You don’t have to be a biological parent to have kids.
  2. Parenting is not one-size-fits-all.
  3. Parenting is one of the hardest things.
  4. Parenting is one of life's most rewarding opportunities.
  5. PARENT YOUR WAY!

EXPOSURE OPENS IMAGINATION. This episode is a special one because I am turning 40 next week and I wanted to do a series that speaks to the small steps we take today that change our tomorrow. One of the lessons I have learned is to look at people as humans. It is this simple act that allows us to open our minds to different experiences, different innovation and endless possibilities.

Exposure opens your imagination but we can't do it staying within our own bubbles. I know it's comforting to stay where we look, think and act like the people around us but if we want to see real innovation, expansion and imagine beyond what we see, it takes exposure.

GO BACK TO THE STARTING LINE. We all have those days when we question whether or not what we are doing matters. It is in these moments that we need to go back to the proverbial starting line and ask the question, WHY? These moments happen to all of us but it is in these moments when we have to make a decision to go forward even in the midst of adversity.

In this episode, I talk about how I had to go back to my own starting line. We all need a reminder that even though we skin our knees, we can still keep going. It's taking those small steps even if you have to start crawling that matters.

What is your WHY? Let's talk about it on Instagram.
