We have met with Anastasia Karachristou at Herräng, where we were both volunteering and, of course, dancing. So this episode is with a very sleep deprived version of Anastasia. She is a music teacher and she plays in the children's theatre in Athens. She has been dancing lindy hop and solo jazz for the past 8 years.

Yusuf Hussein is 21 years old, born and raised in Järva, Rinkeby. He is a person of many interest - a filmmaker, a director, a poet, an engineer student, and an executive director of a creative platform “Rise and Shoot”.

We know each other with Katerina since early childhood and until we both moved to study in the UK, we had only been meeting in Cyprus, once a year. And now, during my short visit to Cyprus, we meet again!
Katerina was born and raised in Cyprus, while her mom is Russian. For the past 6 years she has been living abroad - studying and working in the UK. Now she is living in Dublin, Ireland. She is fascinated by Russian literature. In her free time she loves walking around galleries and museums, observing people.

Ursula has always been dancing and cycling (she made it through 31 countries on a bike so far...). Has has been working as a teacher, as a manager and now for 28 past years she has been a speech and language therapist in Germany.

Rodrigo is working at KTH as the program director of a Masters program in Architectural Lighting Design, teaching students lighting and daylighting. Martynas is an urban designer and planner. He graduated from Delft Institute of Technology (TU Delft) as an urbanist, and the worked in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Then came back to Lithuania and started his own studio (http://mmap.lt), in which they specialise on complex transformation projects in existing cities. Their main focus is community involvement and public participation on a large scale.

! This episode has been recorded on a Wednesday evening, February 23rd. Since then the world has changed, so it feels. I can understand people who might find this content irrelevant at the moment, but I have come to a decision to post this episode as this is a conversation that happened in that moment and I would still like to share that discussion with those who choose to listen to it - now or later.
We have met with Christina at Open House Festival in Stockholm last year, where we were both volunteering. Then we came to realise that we both have been studying Architectural Lighting Design at KTH, we both have Greek origins and we both dance Lindy hop.

Remo is coming from Switzerland (town of Zug) and sees himself as a filmmaker who is talking to people and with people, telling the stories. Besides that he is often on stage as a host, as well as being an artist and a podcast producer.

Alexander is an artist, living in Helsinki, with a big interest in light as a material. Take a listen to our conversation with Hannes, who I have met through KTH university, or some of the welcoming events, to be precise. He is from the Southern Germany, from a little village of 1000 inhabitants, now studying Masters in Architecture in Stockholm.

Cody is a half Californian, half Swedish lighting and interior designer, observer, appreciator, a fan of a city. I really liked his comment that artificial lighting re-maps the city at night. Would you relate to that? In this conversation we will be describing Stockholm and California using the metaphors I would never have thought of. Евгений родом из Риги и ассоциирует себя с музыкой — если конкретно, то с направлением black metal. И, конечно, в первом же вопросе о городе он цитирует фильм «Брат» (который я так и не посмотрела и, поэтому отсылку к нему не разгадала сама). В нашем разговоре будет упоминаться деревня и её атрибуты: лужайка, огонь в печке и парное молоко.

This conversation took place at Lappis (student campus area), where Tatiana and Nicole have started Fluke - an initiative aiming at engaging the community and activating spaces. Their project is about being visible and giving voice to people. Co-existence of differences, trigger material, American suburbs, street pop-ups and responsive art installations — these are some of the things we are going to talk about.
I like how this conversation was evolving around Lappis, quite a special area of Stockholm that has its own vibe, which makes it a space that many students feel the way the want to feel. Have you been at Lappis? What is your impression of it?

Какая палитра у твоего родного города, а? Алла — графический дизайнер, в двух шагах бренд стратег. Город для Аллы — это вдохновитель, мотиватор. Почему, она расскажет в ходе беседы. А также мы поговорим про цвета городов, свечки на улице в районе Alvik, дрейфы и воздушные шары. Эта беседа для меня оказалось легко поощряющей и поддерживающей, в том плане, что мне казалось моментами, что я слушаю саму себя. Тем более понимание того, что в день выхода эпизода я наконец-то лечу в Москву, домой, подогрело мои тёплые ощущения. Nada grew up in Saudi Arabia. Her professional life has been connected with design from different aspects of in - interior design, illustration, building performance and lighting. For Nada cities are modes of living, varying from one city to another. Istanbul would be a social hub, Kuala Lumpur - all about fashion (do you relate to that comment?) and a mix of cultures, while Saudi is a city observed from indoors, it being a building or a car.
Nada values cities that communicate with its citizens. We talked about the lighting quite a bit (as it is an interest we share) and Nada will comment on nightlife having a different personality. SHe shares her observation of Stockholm imposing a schedule on its users where the norm is to go to bed early and wake up early. If you live in Stockholm, do you feel like it is taking away from your freedom in any way?

Cristina is studying Architectural Lighting Design (together with me) at KTH in Sweden and before has been studying in Italy, China and Japan. She perceives a city as a toolkit that is used differently by citizens. Cristina describes herself as a night owl, having a different schedule leaving her to feel a part of a group when she aligns to other citizens time-wise. There is a strong connection to nature that is going through this episode and a feeling of appreciation of the context, whatever it is. In the end we also talk a little about circadian rhythm and the pleasure of seeing the stars.

Юра и Аня познакомились в Москве, где они оба росли и учились, и с тех пор жили в Филадельфии и Стокгольме. Юра занимается биомедицинской иллюстрацией, Аня — учёный исследователь, биолог. Город дня них обоих — это среда обитания, но каждый из них раскрывает тему города по-своему.
Записывали мы подкаст отдельно (в то время как один из родителей был на площадке с дочерью), а эпизод создался один, в котором фигурируют объединяющие их города и дочь. Мне было интересно слушать, как по-разному может восприниматься город через ощущения двух людей, связанных общей профессиональной сферой, досугом и городом.

Kirsten has a passion for contemporary art and architecture, people and resilience, which she addresses through artwell.se. Multi-sensory experience, individual sustainability and restoration spaces would be the key words of this episode.
Coming from a landlocked part of Toronto, having a connection to the water is an important part of the city for Kirsten, with the nature at the door step and cultural diversity, that she adds to Stockholm, representing an international approach. Seeing a sky as opposed to the intense cool lighting is what she enjoys living in the suburb of Stockholm.

Марина работает на палубе, она матрос. И свою роль в городе (каждую вторую неделю) она воспринимает через свою работу - даже идеальный день её прошёл на работе, ведь дело в настрое людей, как говорит Марина.
В этом эпизоде мы обсуждаем работу на корабле в Стокгольме: энергию людей на борту (туристы vs коммьютеры), прожекторы, слепящие моряков и тёмные причалы, у которых, бывает, не замечают людей, и корабль проходит мимо.

Iris is a lighting designer from the Netherlands who grew up in the countryside and this close connection to nature (and water, in particular) comes through the whole conversation. She sees herself as a slow passenger, noticing small details in a city, taking the time to stop and appreciate, sometimes unintentionally causing other curious people to stop too. Iris feels like Stockholm is a city that is lit in a way that makes people feel comfortable at night. However, the ideal night she would spend in a completely dark (or dimmed down) city that she imagined to be a case study in observing how little light we actually need. Being a lighting designer, she has also suggested two other ideal night options, strengthening the point of the need for choice and flexibility. What is a traditional breakfast you would have in your city? (reply in comments!)
Osman who is currently studying information technology will give his insight into Aleppo, Istanbul, Mecca and Alexandria, comparing them between each other in different terms. To him a city is like a family, where citizens are family members, having mutual and shared responsibilities towards each other and a city itself.
Osman will talk a little about his research project at the KTH Living Lab on thermal comfort, say why would he be prisoned if he comes back to Aleppo where he was born and mention the high buildings blocking the moonlight in Alexandria.

Для Юлии чай — это соединитель, материализация отношения солнечных лучей с почвой. Имеет ли это отношение к городу? Для нашей гостьи, да, хотя бы потому, что, путешествуя, Юлия зачастую останавливается у людей из чайного коммьюнити, проживая город через их ощущения.
Путь Юлии пролегает по нескольким странам, Украине, Польше, Норвегии, Великобритании и Швеции, сопровождая её трансформацию от «ночного человека» к иному способу проживания городов. Сейчас Юлия воспринимает город, как измерение, в которое можно входить, когда это нужно.

Louise will share her story of coming to her go-to place to study Architectural Lighting, intertwining that with expressing her passion of writing about people. For Louise a city is a stage, and the way she describes it made me appreciate the backstage of it even more.

Erik will share his ideas on a hardware and software of a city through his lens of a person experiencing a city through observing and interacting with people, co-creating a city. He will share a little thought form Sundbyberg, saying what many people from there claimed to be the best place in that suburb, expressing a need for spontaneous meetings spaces for people. Jim was born in the South of Sweden and has been working with lighting design at Light Bureau (ÅF) and has recently found his own practice, while being a partner with Annell Ljus och Form AB. We have been recording this episode at the Haymarket Hotel lobby (hence the background music and noise) but what is interesting is that Jim was working on lighting design of this project.
It was an inspiring about different levels of a city and about qualities of light with a person who loves walking around a city both at day and night. «Good lighting is about adding to the emotional state» — this is only one of the comments that I wanted to highlight from our talk.

Rohit grew up in India, then moved to Stockholm for Masters and since then has started his company «First Loop». We have met through OpenLab co-working space, where I am recording most of my episodes, including this one.

Marcus has been living in several cities in Sweden, has been studying Musik Therapy and currently working in school for disabled kids. This will be a very calm and slowly-paced conversation, focusing on respecting people, regardless of their background, culture, abilities etc.
Our guest will share his experience of seeing at night through thick contact lenses when glare feels very disturbing, suggesting «islands of soft light» as a comfortable alternative. Marcus will delicately share why having many colours in the «city palette» matters and why respect is a foundation of a society.

Viktoria is an urban anthropologist, working at "White Arkitekter" on the issues of soft values, people relations and the social aspect of our cities. She has won the Green Building Council Award in 2014 and has been listed as an influencer for urban development.
But all these awards and facts wouldn’t matter if Viktoria was not so passionate about what she does, being an active user and player in the city. She will also talk about gender and age equality, illustrating it with the example of the urban active environments, such as soccer/skateboard grounds. Communication and getting people to work together seems to be in the centre of fair and sustainable development, according to Viktoria.

Abelardo is an Argentinean, working in Malmö, previously - a stage designer, currently running an architectural bureau «Abelardo Gonzalez Arkitektbyrå». I was lucky enough to meet with him at his studio when I was travelling in the South of Sweden.

Franco is an event creator at the A House co-working space and a sommelier who naturally compares a city with wine. He will mention the typical picture he would associate with a big and modern city (disclaimer - there are lights in it) and touch upon segregation, which is a big topic to him.

She has been living in Stockholm and New York before and for the last few years she has been living in Stocksund with her husband and three sons. You will get to know how much time it takes to walk a block in New York, whether the city gates still add to the city boundary to local residents and where and when the darkness «envelops you in a cosy blanket». Pernilla also mentions the relief of seeing the lights switching off earlier and earlier in the morning - something that I also felt when I came to Sweden.

I am happy to introduce you to Tadeu , a Brazilian-born explorer, musician and a trained architect. He has lived in England for 15 years, then moved back to Brazil where explored self-sustainable lifestyle at the house he has built himself (a story with a torch light that was still too bright is involved), after which he met his Swedish wife in India - what a mix.
He will discuss São Paulo, Auroville and Upplands Väsby, a place where he lives now and where he organised the music festival some time ago. With his company Melange he used to host many world music events in Sweden, using music as a gathering tool. On top of all that, him, his wife and daughter are growing vegetables at their house which he also sees as an expression of doing what they like.

I am happy to introduce you to an urban vision of Marcus, a traffic planner in Stockholm and part-time researcher on public transport as public space in Tallinn and Brussels. He is normally involved in the early stages of physical planning in new areas of Sweden, focusing on shifting traffic from cars to other solutions. He will share his memories of walking from work (at a club) late at light in the middle of dark and empty streets; his vision on cities that are not segregated and have access to nature and water. Today’s episode is quite chill and, being recorded in a cafe some time ago, could be seen as a reminder of a daily city life that most people are missing in this period of time. Irene has been an au-pair in Stocksund and that is where we have met. She grew up in Sicily and later on lived in Veneto, hence Swedish culture was an experience, different from her comfort zone. She will talk about approach to being a good citizen in Italy, multicultural activities as something she will bring back home (e.g. Refugees Welcome Stockholm) and discuss whether having just one lamp in a room is enough, comparing Italy to Sweden in that way. Выпуск с создателями подкаста — это всегда любопытно, потому что после прослушивания можно начать слушать ещё один интересный подкаст. Общаемся мы с создателями подкаста «Зяблик», цель которого показать, сколько талантливых людей улетает из России.
Алексей вырос в маленьком селе под Тольятти, а Натела — в Самаре, и оба сейчас живут в Москве, являясь частыми пользователями кафе. Но это не единственный их вклад в город. Для них город — это расширенным дом, а искусственный свет зачастую создаёт картинную романтику.

С Дашей мы успели обсудить очень многое, включая её родной район Северное Чертаново, где снимался фильм Федора Бондарчука «Притяжение» и не только, и где на первый этаж многоэтажного дома переезжают большие комнатные растения, формируя общее пространство для садоводства.
Даша работает в фонде «Московское Время» и в филиале Музея Москвы, и её интерес к истории и культуре города чувствуется в нашем разговоре про пространство для диалога, топонимы, Яму (публичное пространство, о котором я не слышала, а вы?) и экосистему из проводов и светильников. Мы обсудим, почему важно коллективно уважать друг друга и от чего порой кажется, что деревья на московских бульварах в любой момент встанут и уйдут.

В Светлане, основателе и директору фитнес школы Fitness Express, гармонично сочетаются такие интересы, как черепахи и фитнес. На протяжении 25 лет Светлана была инструктором групповых программ, в 1996 году начала проводить первые в России фитнес туры, да-да, первые.
Но душа нашей гостьи лежит к необитаемым островам.
