Many of us struggle to accept compliments. We respond with self- deprecation or dismissal mainly because we’re uncomfortable with focused appreciation and affection. What is it like then to receive the full, unmerited love of a holy God? It can be hard to accept and enjoy, which is why Paul prays for us and we respond in prayer and worship.
We all have opinions on what “church” should be: what we’re looking for, the needs we want met, the style of music and preaching, etc. But the letter to the Ephesians has shown God has plan for all things and He wants us, the church, to join in what He’s doing. What might happen if we checked our wants and emotions and, instead, pursued the calling He’s given us?
Human beings, like animals, tend to group together with those most like them. We naturally associate with those who look like us, talk like us, vote like us, live around us. The Gospel obliterates all those boundaries, however, and calls us into an entirely new group. God hasn’t just created a new identity for you and for me, but also for us together.
The world today is full of labels. Whether it’s about politics, sexuality, gender, career, income-level, it feels like we’re defined by a select number of nouns and adjectives. The Gospel says something completely different, however. There is only one identifying thing and that is simply Jesus Christ. This is who you are.
Knowing what the plan is and even what to do in it is one thing. Having the ability, however, to execute is an entirely other thing. We can’t do it on our own, whether it be cleaning up our lives, fixing our homes, or experiencing God. But God gives what He commands. He gives His Holy Spirit.
Sometimes we struggle to see the forest for the trees, whether we’re watching global affairs or just wondering if our little old lives mean anything in the big scheme of things. Are we just momentary blips passing through the cosmos? Is the world just heading toward chaos and destruction? Jesus is the answer! In Him both human beings and the world itself can be brought into perfect relationship with God.
What’s the point of life? What’s the point of this world? If one day we’re all just going to die, what about all this stuff we have around us? Is it really all about eating, drinking, and being merry or is life just about trying to one day just make it to heaven? Jesus’ full bodily resurrection proves to us, though, that God loves this world and has amazing plans for us not only in the future but for today as well!
As God created the heavens and the earth by speaking light into darkness, humanity’s sin and rebellion invited the darkness back in. In the cross, then, Jesus would take that darkness upon himself in order to defeat death in his own death.
Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday aligned with many of the symbols of kingship the people were looking for. And yet, despite these signs the week would end with this would-be king hanging to die on a Roman cross. Were the people wrong, or, had that been right all along?
You don’t need to be an engineer to know a solid foundation is necessary to a stable building. Everything can look beautiful and top of the line on top, but without a firm base everything will collapse. The Sermon on the Mount has illustrated exactly what the Kingdom Jesus is building is, culminating in this final command to be sure our core foundation and beliefs are in the right place.
Some criticize and characterize Christians as judgmental. But when something is out of alignment with God’s design is it judgmental to state that? How do we embody the righteousness of the Kingdom in a loving and humble way without becoming hypocrites? Jesus says just to Ask.
We can tell what a person really believes and values by where they invest their time, money, and affections. If we work in reverse then we’ll see where our true loyalties and allegiances are and that, ultimately, you are what you love.
Why pray if God already knows everything that is going to happen? Why pray if God has a Sovereign Will that will be done no matter what? Yet Jesus doesn’t just invite us to pray but commands it. He then even gives us a model. By understanding the Lord’s Prayer not only can our own prayer lives be transformed but our very friendship with our heavenly Father.
ON SUNDAY February 22, the message is called KINGDOM-FORMED PEOPLE, with Beth Anderson. In Matthew 6, Jesus challenges His followers to examine not just what they do, but why they do it. As He teaches on giving, prayer, and fasting, Jesus shifts the focus from outward appearance to inward formation. Kingdom-formed people don’t practice their faith to be seen by others, but to be shaped by the Father who sees in secret. Spiritual disciplines, practiced with the right heart posture, lead us toward wholeness, integrity, and true flourishing.

People have a default way of dealing with problems. Especially today, it feels like you can’t believe what anyone says and at the slightest hint of offense people explode in rage. We’re not just talking about outside the church; this happens inside too! What if we really thought of everyone as our neighbors, and by neighbors we mean those we truly loved?
Matthew 5:21-32 | True faith isn’t performance based. Jesus doesn’t want our rote obedience and conformity. His Kingdom bears both a perfect design for the world and for each person within. We must be diligent, then, at surrendering even our emotions and desires to Him!
Matthew 5:6-8 | How common it has become to hear people talk about “My truth”, or to say “Well, that’s just your truth”? The standards of right and wrong have seemingly become subjective. Jesus reveals to us, though, in the Beatitudes, that there is a singular standard and it is God Himself. God is a God of justice, but He is also a compassionate and loving God. If we seek His Kingdom, therefore, we must seek Him first and emulate these virtues as well.
Matthew 5:3-5 | If you wanted to give a picture of the best of the best or define the criteria of a utopian community, what would be included? Jesus begins the Sermon on the Mount defining just that, but warning that His disciples will not fit the criteria the world will offer. But because they seek Him and His Kingdom above all, they are blessed.
Matthew 5:13-20 | God didn’t design us to just get by and make it through life. Since Genesis 1 He has had big, good plans and invites us into them. By understanding His mission and how we can join in through Jesus, even the ordinary routines of life become a part of something bigger than we could ever imagine.
Human conflict abounds in our world, even in our churches. Whether we have been wronged, someone has wronged us, both, or just because of our pursuit of Jesus, peace is not something that just comes naturally about. Only by
focusing our hearts, however, on how Jesus has reconciled us to Himself and has overcome the world can we enjoy the flourishing of relationships He designed us to have.
ON SUNDAY January 4, the message is called The Sermon on the Mount, with Patrick Edwards. The world isn't right. Things aren't how we sense they should be. The Bible is filled, however, with promises from God that He will heal this world and His people. Jesus said, in fact, that He came to give abundant life, that His burden is easy and His yoke is light. Are these just promises for the future or are we meant, even now, to experience these things- to flourish?
ON SUNDAY December 28, the message is called My SWAN Song, with Scott Chafee. This service is Scott's last Sunday as Discipleship Pastor. This passage is where Paul is on his way to Jerusalem and he stops to visit the Ephesian elders to encourage them and bid them farewell.
ON SUNDAY December 21, the message is called Return of the King, with Patrick Edwards.
The world is full of those who want control or influence over our lives. There’s the promise of peace, security, contentment everywhere we look. But there is One who claims authority and promises He is coming soon to place everything else in subjection. We are to welcome His return and begin now to find our peace in Him today.
ON SUNDAY December 14, the message is called Idylls of the King, with Patrick Edwards.
It’s normal to have doubts or questions in a time of crisis or suffering. Why would a good God allow bad things to happen especially to people who follow Him and worship Him? It’s hard to have joy when things aren’t merry and bright. But by centering ourselves on the King and His promises are we able to see that He is, indeed, working all things for good, and there we can find joy.
ON SUNDAY December 7, the message is called AS KINGFISHERS CATCH FIRE, with Patrick Edwards.
Repentance isn’t a very popular concept. Perhaps because it requires us to acknowledge wrongdoing. It can be even more difficult because it means the end or death of something we’ve likely enjoyed. But it also means the birth of something even better! When we really believe that Jesus is King and is a better king than I could ever be, suddenly repenting and making myself ready for His coming becomes quite easy.
ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30, the message is called THE ONCE AND FUTURE KING, with Patrick Edwards.
Kevin McAlister knew when the Wet Bandits were coming to rob his house, to which he famously says, “When they come back, I’ll be ready.” Seems obvious, and yet, in the busyness of life we get so distracted that we often don’t give our faith much of a thought. Jesus warns, however, that as the once and future King He will most assuredly return one day to consummate His Kingdom and He intends to find us doing what He instructed us to do.
ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 23, the message is called THE TRUE AND BETTER EXODUS, with Patrick Edwards, from Exodus 32-40.
Not much can be more frustrating than an unresolved ending. We’re left without closure and comfort as to what happened to the characters or what came next. An unresolved ending, however, does indicate there’s more to come, which is exactly how the book of Exodus ends. There’s a greater exodus and greater redemption still to come.
ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 16, the message is called KNOWN, with Patrick Edwards, from Exodus 25-31.
It’s one thing to know facts about someone and an entirely other thing to actually know them. God’s desire is not for religion but for relationship. He doesn’t want us to just know about Him but to know Him and be known by Him. To be redeemed means to enjoy the presence of God every day.
ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 9, the message is called REFLECTING THE REDEEMER, with Patrick Edwards, from Exodus 19-24.
Rules are restrictive. They limit who we are, what we can do, and the fun we can have along the way. But our Designer knows how we are meant to work and, thus, gives us instructions how to best live. The Law shows us what God is actually like and how we can flourish in His design for the world.
ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 2, the message is called KNOWING GOD, with Patrick Edwards, from Exodus 16-18.
How quickly we can forget something that has just happened. One would think that after watching a sea parted that you’d be riding that spiritual high for quite a while, and yet, just like that, God’s people begin to complain. It seems, then, that our bigger issue is not finding redemption from something, but inwardly learning how to live in surrender to something that is not ourselves.

Worship is more than just music. Worship is a work of those who have been redeemed. Its focus is on who the Redeemer is and what need we have to be rescued. Worship is the proper response to salvation.

ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 5, the message is called SLAVES, with Patrick Edwards, from Exodus 1-4.
Exodus 1-4 | We tend to think of freedom as to what we’re freed from. Could be debt, chattels, a bad job, or a wicked government. As Christians we talk about redemption as freedom from sin and death, but we don’t often think as much as what we’re freed to. Turns out, we’re all slaves, it’s just a question as to slaves to what. As Bob Dylan sang, “You're gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the Devil or it may be the Lord but you're gonna have to serve somebody.”
ON SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 28, the message is called LIVING IN THE MIDDLE, with Beth Anderson, from Exodus 6; Philippians 1:6; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18; Hebrews 12:1-2; Romans 8:18-25.
Life is full of “middles” - awkward, uncomfortable and often overlooked. From Ruth and Naomi to Moses and the Israelites, God’s people have always wrestled with the tension of the in-between. So how do we live with faith, hope and endurance while we wait for God’s promises to be fulfilled?
ON SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 21, When We Turn To An Extraordinary Redeemer, with Patrick Edwards
Ruth 4 | The most extraordinary thing we’ll ever do with our lives is be used by God in the building of His Kingdom. Sometimes He do so in “big” ways but other times it may be “small,” and the thing is we may never know in this life all that He was doing. The key then is simply keeping our eyes on Him, desiring more than just an extraordinary life but, really, desiring an extraordinary redeemer.

Ruth 3 | Sometimes we have the best of intentions, but we still are guilty of trying to force God’s hand. Sometimes we think He needs our assistance. But a heart that desires to live an extraordinary life will do so in humility seeking God’s glory and will even in the small tasks of life.

Ruth 2 | One of the things that make life feel so “ordinary” is that we don’t perceive where God is present and in work in us or around us. The key, then, to the extraordinary life is in trusting in the invisible ways God draws us closer to both Himself and to the family of His people.

Ruth 1 | Living in a world that has no interest in the things of God nor in submitting under His lordship, it can be easy to be subtly influenced by such things and led astray. Often, one of the biggest factors that stands in the way of us leading extraordinary lives of faith are the personal compromises we make with sin.
ON SUNDAY AUGUST 24, How to Make Your Life Matter, with Patrick Edwards
The biggest enemy we face, perhaps, is monotony. Day in and day out it's the same old routine. Even as followers of Jesus it can feel like we're just waiting for heaven and then the new age to come. The Book of Proverbs has stated emphatically, however, that this life matters greatly, and if we seek God with all our hearts and minds and His Wisdom then each of our lives can matter greatly, too.
ON SUNDAY AUGUST 17, How to Have Friends, with Patrick Edwards
Theologian Thomas Aquinas called friendship "the most prized thing on earth." Two other great thinkers once said, "I get by with a little help from my friends." History testifies to the importance of having people in our lives, and yet, in 2025, this seems harder to attain than ever. Thanks to a litany of factors very few people today can honestly say they have true friends, even in the church. All the more reason, therefore, for us to consult the wisdom of God on how to be friends once again.
ON SUNDAY AUGUST 10, How to Family, with Patrick Edwards
To be blunt, deep down we all know we're failing on this front. Maybe we cope by saying we're doing better than "them", but more likely we all have something in our family lives that we feel guilty over. At best, we're phonies. Understanding, however, the grace we have in the family of God empowers us not to be burdened by our shortcomings but instead to strive in love together toward the master plan.
ON SUNDAY AUGUST 3, How to Speak, with Patrick Edwards
The pen is mightier than the sword. Seems absurd if you find yourself just armed with a ballpoint pen in an alley against a guy with a sword, but this saying points to the ripples and waves words can make versus one stroke of the sword. In fact, the Bible tells us that in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God and the Word was God. Truly, death and life are in the power of the tongue.
ON SUNDAY JULY 27, How to Treat Money, with Patrick Edwards
Money can be a source of great blessing as well as a source of great stress. No matter your income it can feel like you never have enough. And as one lyricist once remarked, “It's like the more money we come across the more problems we see.” The Proverbs show us how we should think about things like wealth and poverty and, more importantly, demonstrate the kind of heart we should exhibit when it comes to money.

Maybe you pray about major life decisions, but what about the small ones? Do you think God cares or has a plan for what you do for dinner or what outfit you wear today? If He does, how can we know the answer? Is life one of just constant guessing as to whether we're pleasing God and doing the right thing? We tend to either over-think our decisions or not think enough about them at all. God does care, though, and desires to give us the grace and wisdom we need daily to follow Him in everything we do.
On July 13, Patrick teaches from Proverbs on How to Work.
We work hard all week to make it to the weekend. We work hard all year to take that nice vacation. We work hard for decades so that we can retire. Have you noticed, though, how busy your weekends are, or how tired you are after your vacation, or how you do more in retirement than you did when you were working? It would seem we haven’t quite figured out this work thing. The Proverbs show us that right working is a mindset and worldview that holds not the task itself as its focus nor even the end itself, but the One to whom it’s for.

On June 29, Patrick teaches from Proverbs, on How to be Humble.
In a world where we're all trying to get ahead, self-promotion seems to be the key. Thanks to social media, anyone can become famous, where fame itself becomes the goal. This type of pride and self-absorption, however, is destructive and, ironically, ultimately produces the opposite effect. Humility, we see, then, is not thinking less of yourself, but, rather, thinking of yourself less.
On June 22, Patrick teaches from Proverbs 8, on How to View the World.
Imagine there were an owner's manual to your life. Something that gave you both the instructions and the perspective needed to navigate through each and every season. What if there were something like that for the whole world, as if the creator of all things shared his blueprint and left instructions for us? That's precisely what God offers in sharing His wisdom with us through the Scriptures. The question is whether we will continue to insist we can do it on our own or, finally, lean on His understanding in all things.
On June 15, Patrick teaches from Proverbs 2, on How to Be Wise.
Group think is easy. Whether it's our peers or something we see on our screens, it's easy to just go along with what everyone else does and believes. On top of that, the work of developing wisdom and persevering in its pursuit can be exhausting and costly. But the Proverbs assure us that the treasure of wisdom is worth it!

Wisdom is not just knowing facts but knowing how to process life and react in any given moment. It's a skill and an art ... and one seemingly absent from our society today. Rather than just dig in our heels on views we've taken from cable news or social media, God invites us to explore His design for the world and learn how to think.

LOOKING TO JESUS IN THE LORD'S SUPPER - 1 Corinthians 11:17-34
What did Jesus mean when He told His disciples that they must eat His flesh and drink His blood to have eternal life? What about during the Last Supper when He said of the bread, "This is my body," and of the wine, "This is my blood,"? Different denominations have suggested a spectrum of beliefs concerning what Communion is and what it means. Looking at Paul's first letter to the Corinthians we'll see where exactly Jesus is whenever the Church observes this ordinance.

Our Student Minister, Beth Anderson, concludes the "I Have a Question" series with a message on how to deal with guilt. Guilt can either crush us or lead us closer to Jesus-it all depends on what we do with it. The Bible is full of people who wrestled with guilt, and their stories show us the difference between being destroyed by it and being restored through it. Judas gave up in his guilt, but Peter ran to grace. David brought his sorrow to God and found healing. Guilt doesn't have to be the end of the story-because with God, it can be a gateway to grace.
Sex is that great unaddressed topic in the church. And yet, sex seems to be the only topic front and center everywhere else! What does the Bible say about sexuality. What is sinful and what is not? And what should be not only our practice, but what should our conversations about sex look like, especially with those who don’t share the Christian faith or our perspective on the Christian faith?

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE?
Revelation 21:1-5 | Benjamin Franklin summarized one great truth about human life when he said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” But death is far less certain than one may think. Is death it? Despite all the speculation from culture and even church tradition what actually happens at death? And what happens next?
On May 4, Patrick Edwards continues his series called, I Have a Question, with this message on Why Do Bad Things Happen.
Job 2:10 | If God is good and all-powerful, then surely, He wouldn’t allow pain? Or even if He did allow it to bad people, then not good people…right? But sometimes the bad in this world thrive and the good suffer. What about the innocent born into poverty, famine, or abuse? Suffering seems to be an obvious indictment against God and even against His existence. What is His answer?
On April 27 at 11:00, Patrick Edwards has a message called, Can I Trust the Bible, part 1 of his series, I Have a Question.
Mark 16:9-20 | As we ask our questions, we must be first clear on where we’re looking for the answers. The Bible claims that it is trustworthy, but can we believe that? Isn’t that a self-referential argument and claim? As we kick off our new series we begin with the most basic and essential question, “Can I trust the Bible?”.
[ 11:00 Service ] On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, Patrick teaches about the apostle Paul, from Acts 9:1-31.
We wouldn’t hold the beliefs we do unless we thought they were right, just as we wouldn’t live the lives we do unless we thought it was best. But, often, we become so stuck in those ways that we’re unwilling to consider anything else. The Resurrection of Jesus requires us to each deconstruct our lives, however, enabling us to see there is something better than we ever could have imagined.
On Good Friday, April 18, 2025, Patrick teaches from Colossians 2:13-15.
What happened on the cross? How did the death of Jesus obtain salvation from sin? What exactly makes Good Friday so good? This Good Friday we’re invited to explore how the death of Jesus did even more than just rescue us from Hell but was the moment of victory of the visible and invisibles powers of this present world.
On April 13, Patrick concludes the Genesis series with this message called, Where We're Going from Genesis 46-50.
As God brings Jacob and his family into safety and abundance, we see that even then the journey isn’t over. Egypt isn’t their final destination. God’s plans far exceed what they could have imagined and the same is still true today!
On April 6, Patrick brings a message called, the Unfolding of the Masterpiece, from Genesis 42-45.
When it rains, it pours. It never feels like just one challenge pops up in our path, but a multitude, and as that chaos builds up, we all eventually get to our breaking point. In those times, however, when all hope or reason seems lost, is most often when God reveals His presence and His perfect purpose.
On March 30, Patrick teaches from Genesis 39-41, with a message called, Who Are You, O Man?
Questions aren’t a bad thing to ask, nor are they forbidden by God. On the contrary, because He loves us and wants a relationship with us God invites and encourages our questions. But we’re to ask them in humility, reverence, and faith. Only through that lens will we then be able to maintain trust and hope in the hardest of circumstances. Only then will we be ready to be used by Him for the great big thing He has planned for us and His world.
On March 23, Patrick talks about the King Who is Coming - Genesis 37:2-38:30
Henry David Thoreau argued, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” We all struggle to find meaning in our day-to-day lives and often question if there is any bigger purpose. The people we read of in the Bible probably felt no differently, despite what we can now see in hindsight. The story of Jacob’s sons reminds us that God is at work in the little things to bring about His big promise.
ON MARCH 16: Domesticated Jesus with Scott Chafee (the opening clip was a scene from the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe).
Is Jesus really the Lion of Judah? Or do we prefer a tame Lion, perhaps de-clawed without fangs. It seems that in the western church we have domesticated this young Jewish rabbi who turned the world upside down with his teaching. Many in the church seem to invite Jesus into their already busy lives so that Jesus can follow US, rather than we following HIM. On Sunday, let's look at the ways we tend to TAME Jesus into something we like better than the Jesus who calls us to radical obedience and discipleship.
On March 9, Patrick is teaching from Genesis 34:1-37:1
While human history has been dominated by those who would seek to make a great name for themselves, the modern era has produced an obsession with fame and celebrity like none before. Nearly everyone wants to be known and famous. God, however, has something bigger and better in mind: Not to bring individual fame and glory, but adoption into a family that will last forever.
On March 2, Patrick's message comes from Genesis 29:1-33:20
The Bible tells us that it is God’s kindness that is meant to lead us to repentance and trust, but sometimes what God does in our lives, or allows, doesn’t feel like kindness. Ultimately, though, Jacob’s frustrations help us to have faith in all circumstances showing us how much God cares for our well-being and how He will ensure He gets us there.
On February 23, Patrick's message is Faithful Amidst Dysfunction, Part 2. Often that which stands most in the way of God’s plans is us! Whether it be because of our own selfish ambitions, our laxity, or taking matters into our own hands, rather than cooperating in submission and faith we end up trying to build our own kingdoms. But God’s grace and power is greater than our sin. If there is one thing the story of Jacob teaches us, it’s that we cannot mess up or slow down God’s mission!
On February 16, Patrick continues his series in Genesis: Obstacles and setbacks not only frustrate us in our progress toward a goal, but they can make us doubt the cause altogether. Maybe we misread the situation or shouldn’t have started down this path. We may even start to ask, “Has God left us, or have we left Him?”. The start of Jacob’s journey away from home shows us, however, that when our hearts and minds are focused on His words and promises we can have certainty that despite all appearances He is with us and working all things out according to His perfect plan.
On February 9, Patrick teaches from Genesis 21-24. The human race is diverse. In appearance, in cuisine, in music, in all sorts of things we are different, not just across the planet but even in our immediate communities. Those differences, unfortunately, have often led to division and hurt, but God’s purpose is to bring all people together. The Gospel, we see, isn’t detached from questions of ethnicity or gender or culture but encompasses them all.

HERE'S THE DEAL: The power of a promise relies on three things: (1) Is the promise-maker trustworthy, and (2) Is the promise-maker able to come through, and (3) Is the promise itself good. In the book of Genesis, as the world begins to take shape and people do as they please across the globe, God makes a promise about how all things will turn out. We just have to decide if the promise meets these three criteria.

HERE'S THE DEAL: How many times would you try to help someone, who continually turned you down and insulted you, before you just gave up on them? Genesis 5-9 feels like God giving humans the chance for a massive do-over and yet, when all is said and done, nothing changes. Just how true to His promises will He remain?
ON JANUARY 12 - Humanity's City, (Genesis 3:1-4:24) with Patrick Edwards, Ph.D.
HERE'S THE DEAL: Where did things go wrong? How did we get here if the world God made was good and did what He created it to do? Something clearly went wrong. Against God’s good design for the world human beings tried to devise their own plans and with that broke God’s good world. But even their rebellion couldn’t stop God as His grace is greater than all our sin.

HERE'S THE DEAL: The Bible opens by definitively showing us the Plan for the whole world and who the Plan-Maker is. The opening chapters aren’t interested in telling us how the world was made, but rather Who made it and why He did. Only when we know Him can we then know ourselves and what He wants to do in this world through us.

ON TUESDAY DECEMBER 24: (3:00 & 4:30 pm) These Kingdoms, No Longer At Ease (Matthew 2:1-12) with Pastor Patrick Edwards, Ph.D.
Most of us would say we “know” the nativity story. We can picture the scene and probably even describe what happened 2000 years ago. But the Journey of the Magi, or Wise Men, appears as a challenge to us. It’s a passage not so much about the journey to the birth of Jesus, but about our journey home afterwards. This Christmas Eve we pause to look at the kingdoms of our lives anew in light of the birth of the King.

HERE'S THE DEAL: From wars, famines, natural disasters, economic turmoil, political and social division, the world seems pretty messed up. Very little feels safe and secure and, worst, we feel so helpless and powerless to do anything about it. But God’s promises reveal to us His plans to topple the proud and mighty and exalt the hurting and the lowly. Jesus is coming back to heal this broken world and make all things new, and that is our PEACE.

HERE'S THE DEAL: Why was the tomb empty? All who hear the story of Jesus must offer an answer, and yet Jesus Himself has already told us. Only by revisiting His Words can we leave our old lives behind and faithfully follow him.

HERE'S THE DEAL: It's easy to look back at someone's failure and say, "Oh, if I had been there..." We'd all like to think that if we had been by Jesus' side for three years we would have listened to Him and remained faithful. But as we near the climax of Mark's Gospel we find that only Jesus alone was able to fulfill the mission of God.
On November 3, Patrick looks at the end times section of Mark, that while we will all face hardship in life, our hope is in the promise of His glorious Kingdom.
ON OCTOBER 27: Why Should We Consider Jesus? (Mark 11:27-12:44) with Pastor Scott Chafee.
HERE'S THE DEAL: People need real reasons to have faith in Jesus, it’s not about just taking a leap of blind faith. There are some good reasons to consider Jesus. In this section in Mark, Jesus addresses his spiritual authority, tells a story of God’s sovereignty and our stewardship, re-emphasizes our kingdom citizenship, addresses an issue of the distorted theology, clarifies the great commandment, affirms his deity, warns those who call themselves religious leaders, and concludes with an example of godly giving.

HERE'S THE DEAL: in times of hardship of just dreaming about our futures, we can find ourselves unintentionally viewing Jesus as some magical genie there to grant us three wishes. But the road to Jerusalem (and ultimately Calvary) requires us to pause on Who the King is and what His Kingdom really offers and asks of us.

It’s one thing to say we are a Christian, but following Jesus is a life of faith, constantly dying to oneself and one’s way of thinking. In the glory of Jesus’ transfiguration, we see the cost of discipleship and begin to see what it looks like in the Christian life for the rubber to meet the road.

On January 21, Dr. Don Solomon brings a message called, The Church Will Never Die, But churches Are Dying – Symptoms of a Dying Church, from Matthew 16:13-18, Acts 1:8, Ephesians 2:14-22. This is the first message in a new series on the American church. Bible study groups are happening at 8:30, 9:30, and 11:00. There is an essential family meeting this Sunday at 5:00 PM to talk about the future of King’s Grant, with a guided prayer time 3:45-4:45. This meeting is open to all members, attendees, and even guests.

Parental Obedience – Exodus 10:10 – the men and parents may go to serve the Lord but not the children. 6. Phony Obedience – Exodus 10:17 – Going to church with no real conviction, and a false sense of security.

Nehemiah runs into opposition to the noble work that God has guided him to accomplish, from three guys, Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem, who who are furious at Nehemiah. They scheme, ridicule, plot, belittle, bully, and intend to do harm to Nehemiah and the people doing this good work. They use intimidation and lies to disrupt the good work of rebuilding the walls and gates.

On November 14, Ken concluded his Fall series called, the Mind Matters - with 3 facts to remember - from Romans 8:5-6.
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

On November 7, Scott talked about how we can be a blessing to other people. The base passage was Genesis 12:1-3 but we found a lot of Scripture to support this blessing lifestyle.
The B in BLESS means Begin with Prayer – make a list of those for whom you are praying on a regular basis - And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." – Luke 10:2
The L in BLESS is for Listen – discover who they are and where they are by asking questions and listening - This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; – James 1:19
The E in BLESS is for Eat – share a meal with someone each week in hopes of getting to know them better - And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him. – Mark 2:15
The First S in BLESS is for Serve – seeks ways to serve them in some way, demonstrating your love for them - For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. – Mark 10:45
The Second S in BLESS is for Story – you have two stories to share: YOUR story (which is your testimony) and HIS story (which is the gospel, the plan of salvation) - but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. – Acts 1:8
On October 31, Scott talked about the Masks We Wear, from Romans 12:9-13. It’s fun to pretend to be something we know we are not in real life. However, pretending to be someone or something we are not must never be a way of life, especially in the church. We tend to hide behind the masks we wear, because if you knew the real me, you wouldn't like me, and I'm not ready to take the risk of the pain of rejection.
M is for MEETING – we must be connected to one another relationally, socially, emotionally, and spiritually, and this is best done in the context of a small group experience.
A is for ACCOUNTABILITY – we must be connected to other followers of Christ who will hold us accountable for our spiritual life, marriage, and integrity.
S is for SACRIFICE – we know it will cost us something to live out our Christian faith. We live out our faith inside the church and outside in the community.
K is for KNOWLEDGE – we must seek to know all we can about living faithfully as a member of the body of Christ rather than believing that old saying, “ignorance is bliss.”
S is for SALVATION – we must embrace the fact that when we are saved by grace through faith in the finished work of Christ on the cross, we now have a responsibility to act on that faith (to live it out) in front of a lost and dying world.

Hebrews 12:1, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. Q2 - Which best defines your life? Striving to be “like Christ” or “in Christ”? (2 Corinthians 5:17) We will never fully be like Christ until we’re with him. Our status – we are a new creation, right with God, brand new in Christ, not partially new, defined by status rather than striving. Seven facts of a life living in Christ…
- New Creation – the purpose of the cross.
- Our sin debt is cancelled – our brokenness caused by sin has been restored.
- Christ’s righteousness has been substituted for our own failed attempts to be right with God.
- Our faith… in the work of Christ. Faith placed in him, not a righteousness of our own.
- Christ, through the Holy Spirit, is in us transforming us.
- The lordship of Christ over our life – we live for him, our ultimate affection – living in response to him.
- Our hearts surrendered to his love – that keeps us surrendering every day.
