Cynicism and despair tempt us on the regular. One stroll through social media and the daily news can tank the serotonin levels. Her justice work across the globe has given her a unique perspective on hope. Her passion for empowering women and holding people accountable for their actions is inspiring. In today's episode, we cover: - cynicism as the loss of hope in other people - despair as a sense of hopelessness- the brutal honesty of hope- hope in the wild of your past trauma and ordinary life right nowYou'll love this episode and we encourage you to share it with friends. This summer at Why Tho, we learned from a friendship expert, therapist, and life planner. We wanted you to get the wisdom you need to build the ordinary rhythms and connections that help you grow. Summer can be death by a thousand cuts (or meltdowns) but it can also be a time to move slow, take breaks, and figure out what keeps you sane. We hope that’s what this series did for you!More to come since summer is not over but for now, we’re thankful you’re here. Let us know how our guests and this series helped you or made you laugh. Today's episode is a TREAT with author, therapist, and certified Life Planner Chanel Dokun. In her work and in this episode, Chanel digs deep into what women feel and experience, pushing us all to look at beliefs that launch instead of limit, daily rhythms that encourage instead of thwart, and habits that cause us to embody our true lives instead ofdissociate. You'll be encouraged and liberated to start your life now and Chanel can lead every step of the way. Earth is a whole thing y'all so we brought therapist and mental health expert, Keisha Polonio, to give us rhythms and practices to help us in our ordinary life. Keisha says, "There's no quick fix for healing and no quick fix for the mental health issues you may be facing." It's too true and things like keeping a routine, standing in the sunshine, laughing with friends, and attending therapy sessions can help you survive summer. We're grateful for Keisha for her time. Follow her on Instagram (and drool over her water videos from Belize): https://www.instagram.com/therapywithkeisha/ If you're in Florida, check out Keisha's therapy practice. You're in for a treat this week with guest Shasta Nelson, author of Frientimacy. If you're finding your footing in female friendships, asking questions about boundaries, or wondering how to get to know new people, this episode is for you. Shasta lays out three things every friendship needs and explains that you don't need more time but better connections in your relationships. She's clear, helpful, and we loved this interview! If you did too, take a moment to share with friends - that helps other people find the show! If there's one thing we barely agree on, it's television options, but that's why today's episode is perfect. Ashley is being perfectly embarrassing by remembering no actors or actresses names. Tiffany, per usual, finds a way to bring up the Office and Parks and Recs. From true crime to Tiffany Haddish to superheroes, we've got you covered for the rest of summer. We're out here surviving with you, Why Tho Fam, and always grateful for you!Have you heard about Tiffany's mentorship program? It's going to be life-changing! First, our hearts are with you this week as we are all processing the SCOTUS decision on Roe. Wherever you are on the map, we're thinking of you. We're in this together. And very thankful to have a series on survival. Clearly, we need it!Second, what is summer if not liminal space persisting? Perhaps you start your day or your week with a plan in mind and by end of day (or week) you're wondering what happened? Did nothing happen? Should I be accomplishing things? Or maybe you're judging yourself or comparing yourselves to others for how you work or how you mom or how you show up in the world. In today's episode, we talk about the deep well of joy, shutting up online, sometimes, and how we "probably, maybe" will do things during summer. Because we need freedom to change our minds, to grow, to not be productive, to rest, to pursue joy. Earth is hard but we might as well survive summer. We love you Why Tho Fam! Welcome to the surviving summer series. Some of you have no need for survival. You are going to Greece and laying by pools. We bless you with the love of the lord. Some of you are desperate to laugh, figure out some fun things for yourself and your loved ones, and we are here for you either way. Week two of SHAMELESS PLUGS does not disappoint. Women matter. Our voices, our bodies, our gifts - what we give to the world is irreplaceable. For fifteen years, Tiffany has devoted her life to empowering and championing women. She shares the path that led her here - from her first mommy blog with a six-week old and pre-schooler in her arms to writing books about story, dreaming, and justice. As a mentor, teacher, and friend, Tiffany is moving into the next phase of her leadership: Resisterhood Cohorts. Okay fam, we're allergic to hyping ourselves up and to selling things, but we recognize our stuff is dang good and worth telling you about! In today's episode, Shameless Plug Part 1, Ashley shares her pivot out of twenty years of ministry and ten years of writing and speaking. It led her to start a little internet neighborhood called After Hours. If you're looking for hope in hard places, laughter, and wisdom for your real life, this is for you. We rarely ask our listeners to support our work but today we are. After Hours is less than a latte every month or $50 for the year. Ashley writes about boundaries, grace, current issues like abortion and gun violence and more. It would be a pleasure to welcome you into the community. Like so many of you, we are crushed over the shootings in Uvalde. Our babies! BABIES! It is difficult to imagine that loss. At the beginning of this episode, we talked about summer plans with our kids and laughed together as we often do. There are too many families who will struggle to do that. We are sick of this. This episode is a "state of the union" style episode, where we process what we see and how it's impacting us and what we can do about it.It is good to remember that we are not helpless and we are not hopeless. We need to hold ourselves and others accountable to voice our concerns to legislators and to organizations that are causing hurt and harm to communities. It's not too late to make phone calls. Find your local, state, and federal legislators here: www.usa.gov/elected-officials Remember that the vast majority of people in government positions actually want to help others. If your heart is heavy over the SBC report, or another issue we didn't mention, consider writing a letter to express your concern or setting up a meeting with someone who has the power to make change. We love a good rant (you know this) but we can't stop at rants. We need to take action. We're proud of you listeners and we love you. Thank you for making change where you are. You're powerful and we're rooting for you!For another resource on better understanding gun violence in America, read this book by gun violence survivor Taylor Schumann: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08PSKF4XX/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i0
Today’s episode is a special, personal one. We are celebrating AAPI Heritage Month by sharing a few of the Asian women who made a lasting impact on our personal lives. Women who shaped our thinking and our freedom, and taught us how to love and share and be together with others. As the Why Tho fam, we also want to honor Tiffany, as a leader in our lives and in the AAPI community. It’s a blessing to grow together. Support Tiffany’s work by donating to SIP - a weekly table gathering of women to talk about real issues through the lens of faith and justice. How do we learn to stay present? It’s easy to be overwhelmed by work, news cycles, social media, and struggles. Saying 'hello to here' is a practice that can help you settle into the moment. Putting aside distractions, phones, and hustles to stay conscious and connect to the people right in front of you is life-giving. We know there are a million reasons to stay stuck rehearsing the past or worrying about the future. In this episode, we hope to encourage you to find ways to stay present and close to the here and now. Connect with us on InstagramWww.Instagram.com/TiffanyBluhmWww.instagram.com/ashabercrombie
In light of the draft of the opinion written about Roe vs. Wade we thought it was important to share a conversation we had during our Faith and Politics series.
One of the most divisive issues in America's Christian communities is the issue of abortion. We felt it was extremely important to cover this difficult topic because this matters to women, to families, and to us. As Sister Joan Chittister said, "I do not believe that just because you're opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don't? Because you don't want any tax money to go there. That's not pro-life. That's pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is." Pro-birth is not enough. We need to care for people from the womb to the tomb, to value all life, every color, nationality and gender, as made in the image of God. Today's episode, while not exhaustive, will focus on women, on thoughtfully considering what it would take to make abortion unnecessary, and what we can do to serve as compassionate people of faith. Shame is never a tool in our tool belt, but love is. As promised during the episode, here are a few videos, podcasts, and articles that will help you better understand the issue, as well as the history of evangelicals and single issue voting based on abortion politics.

Shame hinders us from admitting we have needs and limitations. We are trained from birth to hide or resent our needs, often because the adults in our lives teach us to do that. What if there's a better way? Dr. Amy Kenny, a disabled scholar and Shakespeare lecturer, joins us to teach us that better way. This is a vulnerable, generous, and transformative conversation. It will sit with you and stay with you. Share with friends and get a copy of this book for you and everyone you know!!

Disability is part of life. We don't talk about it enough, so we invited our favorite teacher, Dr. Amy Kenny to join us for a two-part episode. We talk about our common worship of productivity and achievement and how that impacts people of varying abilities. Dr. Amy reminds us that disability is not a metaphor for weakness and introduces us to the idea that our needs are too often synonymous with shame. YOU WANT TO SHARE THIS WITH EVERYONE YOU KNOW. TRUST US.

America might be 50 states (plus Puerto Rico) but it might as well be several small countries. The regional wars are real. Coastal elites, the Midwest, Bible Belt, southern states and the North East unbelievably fit into one nation. Still, we find ourselves divided. Understanding is needed about the people we are, the values we hold, and how geography informs our reality. Here’s what’s cool: America is often portrayed as red and blue, but purple is actually closer to the truth. We’re more connected than we realize.

It's been a long winter and we are ready for spring. Things are blooming, the weather is warming, and thank God, it feels like we're returning to normalcy. Okay, things are still not normal, but we're getting there. Today's episode is about hope, resilience, making a lot with a little, calming our American behinds down, and finding the light in the darkness of winter. We're with you listeners, and we're for you. You're not alone out there.

If you were looking for a laugh, you have come to the right place. Today’s episode is not only hilarious, but full of wisdom. Too often we suppress, ignore, or avoid our humanity instead of embracing it. The crazy things we go through, the hilarious antics of childhood (or adulthood), our stories, and insecurities are sometimes swallowed up by our desire to be perceived as holy or good or perfect.
We’ve got good news, there’s no sacred and secular. We are each our own person, carrying our stories, and doing our best to live life with a measure of courage and hope. We don’t have to pretend or forsake ourselves to be loved by God or others. It feels that way sometimes, sure, but the truth is, humanity is something to be embraced, not rejected. It’s the thing that actually keeps us connected.
We’re rooting for you friends and super thankful you’re here!

It’s International Women’s History Month and we pulled an oldie but goodie out of the archives. Maybe you need a reminder that difficult days don’t last forever. We’re playing the long game of life.
Tiffany was having a particularly difficult day of parenting when she felt a little whisper: this is a long game. A very helpful whisper indeed, because life is a marathon, not a sprint, and even though we have moments to run hard, we must constantly pull ourselves up from the fray, from the discouraging bad days to acknowledge that the overall arc of our life is likely quite positive. Ashley averages one movie every two years, and recently saw the Toni Morrison documentary, The Pieces I Am, where she too, was reminded of the long game of life: to do what it takes daily and to not only endure, but to build a legacy that inspires others. In our rejection and failure, mountaintops and valleys, dreams fulfilled and dreams delayed, we need to press on in our calling, relationships, and purpose. This is a long game of life and we've got to live it with integrity, grace, and conviction. You're building something beautiful and we're here to cheer you on with this week's episode of Why Tho.

Since we've learned that failure is a part of life, we wanted to offer some practicals for dealing with failure, the big fails and the small ones. Facing shame is a critical way to lessen the grip that failure has on us. We're told that we're not enough. That if we mess up, it's over. That if we don't do things perfectly, there will be no path forward. It's bull crap and we're here to say that if you're human, you'll fail. And sometimes failure leads to freedom.
We love you listeners and this month, we're inviting you to join us for the Ezer Collective in Southern California April 21-23! First of all, gospel is the music of heaven. We will not hear another side. Second, it is a joy to celebrate black history. Our black brothers and sisters have given us a rich legacy of connectedness and joy, endurance and laughter.
In today's episode, Ashley and Tiffany share what they have learned from the black community. What mindsets are important for the future as we advocate and walk together towards justice? How can we see ourselves as creators of a new world in our parenting, working, and worshipping? Black is beautiful and we'll be the first to say so.

Why are we so afraid to fail? SOME REALLY GOOD REASONS. Maybe you were raised in a home where mistakes were not allowed, or you had a boss who threatened to fire you for the smallest things. Maybe you've experienced loss of relationship or reputation because of a personal failure.
We know what we stand to lose. That's why we're afraid to fail. But here's what we've learned: Failure is part of being human. There's no way around it. Failure can be a gift and failure can lead to growth. We need to normalize mistakes, setbacks, and failures. Because nobody's perfect.

People say “change is the name of the game.” Maybe that’s a phrase that should die right alongside “unprecedented times”. Because how about NO CHANGE and PRECEDENTED TIMES? Today, we talk about the pivots we’ve made collectively since Covid changed our lives in March of 2020. We also share how we’ve navigated pivots personally. Career changes, family dynamics, loss of friendship and community, and more. Pivot is our middle name. Probably yours, too. If you need practical help and creative ways of thinking about change, this episode is for you.

We’re laughing to keep from crying this week 'cause what is the world we are living in? It’s good to remember that low expectations of the times we are living in doesn’t mean no expectations.
How do we dig deep for joy? What does it look like to listen to our bodies? Is there anything we need to pay attention to that we might be (unintentionally) ignoring?
Keep fighting the good fight Why Tho fam. You are not alone!

Social media is a source of connection in our lives. Love it or hate it (maybe both) it’s here to stay. In today’s episode, we’re processing what it looks like to participate in online communities without them running our lives.
We don’t have it all figured out (who does?) but we want to live healthy lives rooted in relationships. We bet you do too.

The people around you matter. Who’s on your team? Who’s in your corner? What do you need from them? What do they need from you?
This got us thinking about draft picks. Not because we understand sports, but because if it was possible to hand pick people from any sector of society (OR TV BECAUSE TED LASSO IS WELL REPRESENTED HERE), we’d do it. Maybe the people you’d pick reveal something about the type of person you need in your real life.
Here’s our six draft picks for our home teams. Schools and businesses are closing again and today marks one year since the insurrection on the Capitol. There’s a familiar feeling in the air. While we’re not in the same place, it’s important to push past the sadness and fear to be in relationship with others. To cultivate more of what you need and love.
We’re here for you! Thanks for joining us in 2022. Stop playing and tell your friends. Then, rate or review the Why Tho podcast. It helps others find the show!
Why make impossible resolutions? If you haven’t worked out for more than an hour in 2021, why do you think you can handle an hour a day in 2022?
This is our annual anti-resolution resolution episode. Ten things to stop doing in the new year, such as, but not limited to:
We’re sure we could have given you a list of things to START doing but you probably have enough of those. Starting some of the best habits in life begin with quitting some of the worst ones.
Good luck and Godspeed. May 2022 not be quite the Jack leg that her two predecessors have been.

Happy Christmas Why Tho fam. You’re our favorite!
Pull up a chair ladies (and 2 gents), this one’s a good one. No better time to talk about bodies than the shame inducing holiday season where we’re told to wear our fat pants and then prepare for the worst on January 1. Because it’s one hour at the gym and a big sugar fast, baby!
We call bull crap! Instead of all that nonsense: ⁃ Learn to listen to your body. ⁃ Understand the need to move negative energy through the body. ⁃ Connect with real people about your real problems. ⁃ Recognize that eating disorders and disordered eating are real for many women. ⁃ Consider the impact of hormone health on overall emotional well-being. ⁃ Know that trauma impacts your life.
There’s enough stress on planet earth. Let’s take a load off instead of putting a load on.

As usual, there are heavy topics to talk about. Julius Jones, Kyle Rittenhouse, and Ahmaud Arbery has us talking about the difficult, painful reality of sons in America. That led us to boundaries, and what we are, and are not going to fight about at the Thanksgiving table.
Also, what we are saying no to, code words and signs that it's time to go, and the things that are bringing delight to us right now. (Please order 10m blow dry brush here: https://amzn.to/3l8eRJ7 and solve all your dry skin problems here: https://www.grove.co/catalog/product/Rooted-hand-cream )
And of course, we shared our anti-turkey Thanksgiving meal plans. Remember, most of you are adults. You're in control of your life and relationships. You're a powerful person. Make decisions toward sanity and generosity. Happy anti-turkey day!

Enjoy our last week in our Throwback Thursday series: Why Heaven is All Around Us Tho.
A global pandemic doesn't really feel like heaven, but we're encouraging you to really look and see the goodness of God. Jesus often said, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand..." In the midst of economic difficulty, oppressive rulers, racism, sexism and more, he pressed people to see that heaven is right here, right now, all around us. No matter how dark, how fearful, how lonely, we are not alone, and there is beauty, and dare we say, joy to be found.... But not in Tiger King. So y'all stop watching that garbage! Or at least message us with an explanation, please.

Body image impacts women everywhere. Our culture is obsessed with image. From magazine covers to social media ads to the groups we belong to, we're receiving implicit and explicit messages that the sum total of our value is in our pants size, our lack of wrinkles, our hair, and skin color.
In this episode, Tiffany and Ashley talk about their experiences with body image (name calling, shame, eating disorder, and more). Plus, we'll provide helpful tools to help you overcome negative body image and share how to lean into a more holistic perspective of our emotional, spiritual, relational and physical well-being. We can resist the cultural norms and stop reducing ourselves to what we look like so we can celebrate who we (and others) are!

People lie, cheat, gossip, act wild, don't do what they said they would do, ghost us like they have lost their minds, and we still keep them in our lives! WHY THO?
Maybe it's because we fear the consequences, or repercussions of changing the boundaries in the relationship. We fear the loss of connection, or the rumor mill, or that a potential opportunity will be taken if we hold people accountable for their actions. We fear rejection and loneliness, and we also can be so afraid that people we love the most won't ever change, that we'll be stuck in the crazy cycle forever.
In this episode, we learn why we need to stop making excuses for people so that our relationships are loving and meaningful, instead of scary and manipulative. No relationship is perfect, but we don't have to stay in transactional, dysfunctional relationships - we can work through our character flaws with the right people, who are also working through theirs.
Time to get off the crazy cycle, and say BYE THO to people who have no intention of actually loving us. #byetho #whytho Who needs this podcast? Share it with them!

Why are we so scared to quit what needs to be quit? Sometimes we forget that it's not just about what we are walking away from, but what we are walking into. There's an expansive world of choice and love out there, and the microcosm of our moment (especially if the job, relationship, mentor, employer, pastor, etc. is unhealthy or unsustainable) can make us feel like if we leave the world will end. Will quitting mess with our calling? Will we miss God? Will we have any other opportunities? Do we have what it takes to navigate the unknown?
Here's why quitting could be the best decision you ever made tho: You can build a life you love one step at a time. This episode will help you make an exit plan, dream bigger, and recognize unsafe people and places so you can say, bye tho, with honor and grace.

When conflict calls, how do we respond?
Las Mariposas, the sisters who toppled a dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, have so much to teach us. Minerva Mirabal became the sexual conquest of Dominican Dictator Rafael Trujillo. Her faithfulness, integrity, and resolve in her daily life positioned her to tell him no, repeatedly. Her and her three sisters deaths at the hands of Trujillo’s henchmen led to an uprising of freedom for the Dominican people.
In your life right now, there are opportunities to respond to conflict. This episode is all about sowing the right seeds now, to have the right resistance later.

The mantra "bigger, better, and more" is destroying every sector of society. From agriculture to business, media to the church, the value for production, consumption, and profit over people is deeply impacting creation and communities. As the proverb says, "Much food is in the fallow ground of the poor, and for lack of justice, there is waste."
What is possible when we revitalize the land and communities that are crushed under the weight of production and consumption? What is possible when we stop valuing our "do" and "do for" over "be" and "be with?" When we resist hurry, or the idea that we need bigger, better, or more, we discover the ease and grace we were created to experience. Love Is the Resistance.

Why do we find so many ways to separate ourselves from others? What are the hidden fears that keep us struggling to relate and connect?
Today's guest in the Love Is the Resistance series, Pastor Jennifer Toledo, is no stranger to pushing herself to love people who don't look, think, or act like her. Her global human rights work, leadership in the Los Angeles County foster care system, and faithfulness as a pastor, makes her wisdom helpful and healing.

Learning to love our neighbor (all the neighbors) is important. We can't suddenly have compassion for neighbors in Haiti or Afghanistan when there's a crisis, but not when they move in next door. We need to restore integrity and lean into the knowledge that every person is created in the image of God and worthy of our respect.

When Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Rep Ted Yoho disagreed over a path forward for policing in America, Rep Yoho stood on the steps outside the capitol and called her a b*tch. In one of the worst public apologies he cited his love for God, his family, and his daughters. In her response, AOC discussed the larger issues at play in Rep Yoho's name calling and bad apology.
Do we feel entitled to say and do anything we want to people who don't look, think, act or vote like us? What makes people of faith feel emboldened to disrespect others? And why does it feel like men and women do not fear God in their treatment of others? Language matters. Words shape our world. The way we think and speak directly impacts our connections with others. There is a better way.

Listen to chapter one of "Love Is the Resistance: Learn to Disagree, Resolve the Conflicts You've Been Avoiding and Create Real Change," Ashley's brand new book, releasing August 31st.
In a time of extremism, division, polarizing narratives and more, this is the book we need to learn to better understand others, get along when we disagree and redraw the boundary lines in relationships when necessary. Ashley writes, "In the public space, Christians are not known for our love, or the fruit of the Holy Spirit, or for uniting together to care for the common good. It’s time for change. To put it old school: repent." Yes and Amen.

Every woman has to raise herself. Even in healthy families, children do not receive every thing they need to grow into their purpose. We need relationships, healing, opportunities to change, and wisdom to face our life.

Jenny Yang took us to church on today's episode! With almost 20 years of experience working on policy around immigrant and refugee issues, Jenny is an incredible communicator, and clearly articulates the need for Christians to better understand the overarching story of migration in scripture. This is important to our understanding of how to think about, and relate to, immigrants (what the Bible calls strangers and foreigners). She offers helpful advice for engaging in difficult discussions with our loved ones and how we can take action in our daily lives.
Side note, one of our favorite bits is that Jenny bakes, and as the Policy Director at World Relief, has won the employee bake off.

Taylor Schumann didn't set out to become an activist, but after surviving a shooting on a college campus in Virginia, everything changed. Rebuilding her life again, she not only changed her own perspective about guns in America, but sought to help people better understand the issue and make changes to protect people.

Welcome to our annual Relationship Series. Dr. Bruce Perry said, "Relationships are the agents of change and the most powerful therapy is human love." We agree. From friendship to family to marriage to communities we participate in, relationships are the way we survive, thrive, grow, and heal in this world. Honestly, after the year we've lived through, finding new rhythms for growth and healing has felt a little... impossible, maybe? Well, today's guest can help.
Joy Eggerichs Reed traveled around the country speaking about single life for years before settling down in France with her husband and two kids while running a literary and speaking agency. (Yes, this sounds like a summer romance novel.)
As a single and married person, Joy took time to plan and envision a future she would love, and she shares her practices with the Why Tho community. She's got tried and true methods on this episode that start with asking questions:
-What’s confused that needs to be clarified? - What’s missing that needs to be added? - What’s wrong that needs to be fixed? - What’s right that needs to be optimized? - What are we grateful for?

Welcome to our annual Relationship Series on Why Tho. Dr. Bruce Perry said, "Relationships are the agents of change and the most powerful therapy is human love." We agree. From friendship to family to marriage to communities we participate in, relationships are the way we survive, thrive, grow, and heal in this world. Today's guest says: "I want you to be the scientist of your own life." Nicole Unice, therapist, author, and pastor, joins our conversation today.
She offers practical help for the hard conversations you're avoiding (or having badly), laughs about her own struggles, and humanizes our shared experiences in relationships. Nicole also explains the reason we need to listen to our body, that it's telling us a story about what we need. Through integrating mind, body and soul, we become whole. You'll love this interview!

Welcome to our annual Relationship Series and these next few episodes center on dating and married relationships.
Dr. Bruce Perry said, "Relationships are the agents of change and the most powerful therapy is human love." We agree. From friendship to family to marriage to communities we participate in, relationships are the way we survive, thrive, grow and heal.
Today's guest is a therapist, author, and host of the show Authentic Intimacy. Dr. Juli Slattery offers people and couples an invitation to healthy connection, desire and sexuality. Too many of us deny our desires, feel guilty about pleasure and stay stuck when it comes to vulnerability and intimacy. She's helping us reintegrate into being a sexual person and recapture the goodness of sexual desire. We talk about the difference between legalism and license, and how to find the space in between.

He speaks directly to the anxiety we live with and the one thing we need in order to move together through it.

On today's episode, we welcome a very special guest, theologian, writer and lecturer Cheryl Bridges Johns. She is a prophetic voice with an academic career that spans three decades. Cheryl is a wise elder with a burden for those deconstructing toxic aspects of their faith. She seeks to offer a way to be claimed again beyond the wilderness of criticism. We cover why diversity in the church is important (the GED next to the PhD), finding God in creation, how we embrace life changes and relate and connect across generations. On today's episode, we discuss how justice has informed our faith. Through the current event of the trial of Derek Chauvin, we discuss the pillars of justice - integrity, love, mercy - and what it means to live justly.
How do we continue to remain in relationship with others who don't share a love for justice or think we're too political? How do we value forgiveness and accountability? What books, resources and people inform how we think about Jesus and justice?
This is a helpful show for those processing this week's events and for those who are curious about or hungry for justice.
Books mentioned on this episode: The Very Good Gospel by Lisa Sharon Harper Journey to the Common Good and Prophetic Imagination, both by Walter Brueggemann The Prophetic Lament and New Evangelicalism, both by Dr. Soong Chan Rah Unsettling Truths by Dr. Rah and Mark Charles. In this episode, we'll unpack deconstruction and reconstruction. Deconstruction is getting plenty of buzz word air time, but it's a tale as old as time. Unlearning and relearning is part of discipleship. Thinking thoughtfully about why we believe what we believe increases our faith, and sometimes things fall apart in our belief systems so the right beliefs can come together. Reconstruction follows a healthy deconstruction process.

Why do we blame women? Because it is easier to blame women than to deal with the real problem or systemic issue. It's why people blamed Monica Lewinksy (a twentysomething intern) for Bill's indiscretions instead of dealing with the fact that he abused his power or that culture demonizes women.
It's why people blamed Meghan Markle for the racism she endured rather than dealing with the racism in her environment. It's why people blame the voices of dissent who call out workplace of community culture rather than actually deal with the toxic tenants of the culture itself. It is PAST TIME that we learn to invite women to speak rather than blame them when they do.
"Prey Tell" is an incredible resource for all those looking to address systemic harm, answering why we silence women, why we blame women, and how we can right our cultural wrongs.

"Silence is not spiritual and action is not optional." Oh my, our friend Belinda Bauman is breaking it off as our special guest for the Prey Tell book series. Belinda is an author, speaker, global activist and educator. As she committed herself to empowering women facing injustice in places like the Congo and Iran, the women in her life invited her to see the pain and abuse of women in her own backyard. Alongside Lisa Sharon Harper, Belinda founded the movement Silence is Not Spiritual to help women share their stories and to hold institutions and leaders accountable to change.
We believe women and we want to see a world where the imbalance of power ends so that all people are valued in the image of God.
This episode will help you share your story, create safe space for other women to be honest, and grow in knowing how to hold people accountable.

Well, when we recorded this episode, we had no idea a mob was about to storm the Capitol of the United States, so if this a little tone deaf, that's why. But we hold to our passion and love for better understanding the people we judge. Georgia, Georgia, Georgia... is on our mind.
Ashley shares her conversation with a dear friend Crystal Marie, who lives in the South. Crystal lamented the way the coastal cities tend to talk about the South, as if the whole place is uneducated, racist, and backwoods.
The truth is, it's the bedrock of the civil rights movement, home of the best BBQ in America, and while racism is real, it's a place of community and neighborliness. On the flip side, folks say California will fall into the ocean. Seattle is corrupt because Jeff Bezos lives there. New York is elitist and expensive.
We have so many opinions about who people are. We judge people we don't know and places we've never been, and if we are going to heal our great divide, we must stop this.
Dr. Barbara Shabazz says that our dividing walls laid flat become bridges. It's time to build some bridges. This episode will help you if you struggle with judging others or if you don't understand other regional areas of America. Though not exhaustive, we do hope this will bless you as you heal and recover from 2020 and this election season. We love y'all. Solidarity, for real.
We made it to the last day of 2020 and WE'RE STILL STANDING! We want to help you take a moment to reflect back on this year. How are you holding grief and gratitude together as you think back on this year? We know everyone has lost so much, but what did you gain? What lessons will you never forget? As we look to 2021 and cross over into a new year together, we want to encourage you to be a person who carries and spreads goodness. No matter what your job is, what difficulties you are still facing, what relationship struggles you have, goodness is possible. Instead of asking "What do you want to do?" in a new year, consider asking, "Who do you want to be?" We cannot predict the future, but we can determine to live with hope, joy and resolve to continue. We love you Why Tho listeners - welcome to our new friends who joined us in 2020, and to our faithful listeners, you're the real MVPs!
Take a moment to rate our show and write a one sentence review - we value your opinion. Unless you're that lady with the fake name who gave us a one star rating because she doesn't like us talking about difficult topics as Christians. LOL! Love y'all. Happy New Year!

And after the year we’ve had in 2020, we hope this truth will sustain you and fill you with hope. We pray better days are ahead of us, but if not, we pray you’d find joy in the waiting and in the presence of God who is always always with you.

Today is a stressful day for us here in the US, and while we didn't know the outcome at the time of this recording, we wanted to talk about hot dog toppings, and why hope is stubborn AF tho. Half of the country will be happy and the other half will be crushed tomorrow, and you know what? Our work continues. We're not going to pump you up with "God is still on the throne" messages. Duh, obviously we know that - that's how we all got this far, but we will talk about how hope guides us in the darkness. Hope paves a way where there seems to be no way. Because hope is not some kind of fantasy we live in or the result of all outcomes swinging in our favor. Hope is what we have when we don't have anything else. Hope stares up from the pit of divide, from the pit of pain, from the pit of despair, and says I will hold on to you, God. I will trust you. I will choose to love, to relentlessly pursue justice, and engage faithfully and generously with the world around me. Friends, we have hope. And hope will not put us to shame.

Madeline L'Engle said, "The world has been abnormal for so long that we've forgotten what it's like to live in a peaceful and reasonable climate. If there is to be any peace or reason, we have to create it in our own hearts and homes." (From her novel A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and thank you to Sarah Bessey for quoting this!) Goodness, isn't this true for us today? These days are anything but normal and we have control over so little. We vote (PLEASE GO VOTE), we do our part, and at the end of the day all we can tend to is our heart and the places that feel like home. This is the place we commit to making peace.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God." Jesus said this in his famous sermon on the mount, and no matter what happens with this year's American election, we commit to being faithful people of peace.
This final episode of our faith and politics series is sure to be the dose of hope and hilarity that you want and need. We love you all so much - thank you for tuning in!
We know you've looked at someone with your head cocked sideways, and thought, WHY DO YOU THINK LIKE THAT?!
Today's episode looks at the reasons people think the way they think, and vote the way they vote. Why do we make caricatures of certain people groups? Why some Christians want to see America become a Christian nation? How does trauma inform the way we see others and our role in society?
We were inspired by Rich Villlodas's recent post (https://www.instagram.com/p/CGfpsf7n1L8/) and his work in general, and thought it was important to talk about leading up to the election.
We hope to inspire critical thinking, thoughtful reflection, and spur you on toward loving people across the aisle.

We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is."
Pro-birth is not enough. Shame is never a tool in our toolbelt, but love is.
As promised during the episode, here are a few videos, podcasts, and articles that will help you better understand the issue, as well as the history of evangelicals and single issue voting based on abortion politics.

HELP! Politics is destroying my family! People are choosing sides, demonizing the party they don't agree with, and telling family members that they are supporting the anti-Christ if they vote one way or the other. Worse, this seems to be happening so much in the evangelical space.
So, what do we do? How do we relate to each other? Today's episode helps you personally navigate difficult conversations, setting boundaries, creating safe spaces, and learning how to deal with family members who refuse to listen or see another way.
Feeling the sting of separation at home, church and in friendship circles? This episode is for you.

Well, that was a dumpster fire of a debate, but right on time for our new series: Faith and Politics. Over the next couple of weeks we'll be covering difficult topics, ways of relating to people, and helpful resources for you.
What we will not do is tell you how to think, and how to vote, but we do want you to engage your heart and mind and push you toward love and generosity.
Today's episode tackles humanizing others. What do we do to those on the other side of the political aisle? How do we treat people who don't agree with us? And why do we expect others to bow down to what we believe? We'll offer help for decent dialogue, how to be considerate of others, why we shouldn't troll on the interwebs, and how our faith can inform our perspective of others.
We're looking forward to going through the rest of election season with you, and to our global family, we are confident this will bless you too.

Today we remember the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She is the reason we can sign checks at the bank without our husbands, why it is illegal to discriminate against pregnant women, why male caretakers can now receive the same benefits as women. Many rights we take for granted came from Ruth’s blood, sweat and tears, with over 300 court cases prior to being a justice for almost 30 years. Even in areas we might differ politically, we can share gratitude and show honor for RBG’s service to our country. We offer our favorite takeaways from her life and leadership, and what we hope for ourselves in light of her life well lived.
As always, it is a joy to spend some time with you! Remember we have our birthday party coming up and we’d love for you to attend! Here’s the link to register, so we can see you face to face: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5f5981e2b3bce80ac7765e03

Kindness is king. This is how we live our lives, but sometimes women can be fooled into thinking thank being kind means being "nice." We miss out on standing up for ourselves, for others, and doing the thing we are called to do, because we worry too much about social etiquette, approvals and permissions.
Today's episode is all about women who take precisely no crap from anyone, while living a life they love. From fictional characters, to women of influence, to women in our every day life, we'll share the wisdom we can learn from a life well lived.
ALSO IT IS OUR TWO YEAR BIRTHDAY! You're invited to our party! At 5pm PST (7pm CST, 8pm EST) on October 1st, we're having a celebration in a virtual zoom room.
We'll record live with you, an episode called Everything We Never Told You, with presents we're giving away (you know, for best snack plate, cake or bologna sandwich, as an example), and a time for Q&A.
A fabulous hour for us to see your faces, and serve you the usual flow of sass and wisdom. You must be registered to attend, and you can do that by signing up here: https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5f5981e2b3bce80ac7765e03
We love you Why Tho listeners!!
As the saying goes, there is opportunity in chaos, and we want to help you find ways to get creative this year. If you're anything like us, there are far more barriers to creativity than ever. Decision fatigue (REAL), overwhelm, feeling like everything needs to be perfect around us before we can create, lack of systems, tools and people that lead to structure and stimulate a creative flow.
This episode will bless you no matter your job, side hustle, or daily schedule.
ALSO THIS IS EPISODE 100 OF WHY THO!
And as we mentioned on this episode, we're celebrating our TWO YEAR BIRTHDAY in one month.
We're having a birthday party, and you're invited! Our party theme is EVERYTHING WE NEVER TOLD YOU, and we'll dish the good dirt, laugh together, celebrate with presents (you'll have a chance to WIN), and maybe eat cake. Sorry, it's Zoom, so bring your own.
It's completely free, but we will need you to register to join us on October 1, at 5:30PM PST! Here's the link, so get it together, and send it to a friend!

Well, we made it this far, fam! And now, there are four months left in 2020. Some of you are drinking pumpkin spice lattes (unlike Ashley, the fall Scrooge, for sure), and some of you are gearing up for home school against your will, and continuing to work remotely, and navigate the world as we know it now.
With an election season and holidays on the horizon, we wanted to give you some helpful tips for how to set the tone for the remainder of the year, keeping you mentally and emotionally engaged and strong. You can do this, whatever your "this" is. We're proud of you dear listener, and love serving you each week! Thanks for tuning in for the show!
Mr. Rogers once said, "Feelings are mentionable and manageable." Sigh. Fred, we love you - how he has pastored so many of us (and now our children) through media is remarkable. Children, like adults, have some big feelings, and they don't always know how to manage them, and they cannot navigate life without our help. On today's episode, we share with you our top priorities in raising our young sons, and why these are important for us. Given the scandals and abuses of power we are all bearing witness to in the news today, it is important that we steward ourselves, and the next generation, with integrity and generosity. Whether you are single, co-parenting, single-parenting, or empty nesting, there's something in this episode for you, and we hope the insight helps you as you navigate your life and relationships.
We've got nothing but love for you, dear listener!
If you love Why Tho, please take a moment to rate or review the podcast! It's a joy to hear from you, and thank you for your support!

Mentorship is a gift. To receive encouragement, help, and support on our career path, parenting journey, or in the relationships we hold dear is important and necessary. But sometimes, we get a mean mentor. A coach, teacher, boss, or spiritual leader who gives us a few gold nuggets, but mostly some issues we didn't want to deal with. How do we recover? What can we take away from the mean mentors in our lives? Best of all, who did they teach us NOT to be?
Today's episode will bless you and help you, so share with a friend, and let us know what your mean mentors taught you!

Guys, Jerry Falwell. We can't explain to you why a photo of him with his pants undone, standing next to a young female with her pants undone, was the straw that broke the camel's back, but here we are, we know that being a dumb dumb on the internet has consequences. Posting fake websites, memes and calling them facts: being a dumb dumb on the internet. Calling people names in the comments: being a dumb dumb on the internet. Getting sucked into cults and harmful ideology because of what you're daily digesting digitally: being a dumb dumb on the internet.
So, we're here for you. How do you deal? How do you communicate with others? How do you stop? We want the Why Tho community to be wise, thoughtful, considerate truth tellers and encouragers on the world wide web. Because that's what the world needs right now, and frankly, what each of us need in our lives!

The great poet Mary Oliver said, "To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work." SAY THAT MARY. We are living in a world where the demand for our attention is high, and to lift our eyes to the world around us is challenging.
We are people of hope, and part of holding on to hope is looking hard for the helpers (thanks for that pro-tip Mr. Rogers). Who is operating in the power of the ordinary, and how can we see that, and be that, in this world? Today's show tackles bystander intervention, a person willing to intervene when a situation requires intervention. We provide practical tools, tell stories (like the nurse in Beirut, who cradled three newborn babies after the blast, saving their lives), and offer ways that you can begin to pay attention in your spheres of influence. No special personality type required, just an extra dose of awareness and courage.
We love you listeners. These days are difficult, but we're holding on to hope, praying for you, and standing in solidarity that we can and will make this world a better place for us and for the future.
Do you love Why Tho? We'd love you to do two things: Rate or review the show, and share this podcast with a friend!
We want you to know how much Tiffany hates raisins, and let you know that she has never eaten (or heard of) a raisinette. Dear listener, how is this possible? She is passionate about Sour Patch Kids (Ashley's least favorite candy), both of our hosts love a good binge watch of Supermarket Sweep. The heart wants what it wants, apparently.
We're diving in this episode on the strange things we like, dislike, love, and love to hate. From Twitter to candy to big things (like CHANGE - dear Lord will it ever end), this is a great conversation about how we're different and why it's good, and how we can cheer each other on in this wild and crazy life. As always, we love serving you!

Friendship is a gift but for real tho, 2020 has taken a toll on our relationships. In some ways, we've grown closer, and in others, we've discovered that we're not as close as we thought we were.
People are moving to different cities and states for a more sustainable life, because of job changes and losses, and let's be honest, the political atmosphere has created tension at best, and unresolvable conflict at worst. We need to know how to honestly evaluate our friendships, communicate openly and truthfully, set new boundaries when necessary, and gain wisdom on how to end a relationship well. We're talking about ALL THE THINGS today, and we're listening when you tell us how many friends and family members you've lost, or are afraid of losing. We hear you when your besties move and you have to do long distance. We hear you when you say it's just not like it used to be. We feel you on this one. We have some practical tips as we tackle this in true Why Tho fashion.
As always, we love serving you! If you love what we're doing, subscribe to get these podcasts weekly, and leave us a rating and/or a review - it helps other people find the show! Also, be sure to send this episode to a friend who needs it!

This episode title might make your defenses go up. So, on the front end, are we saying that if it’s good for everyone, then it’s good for me? Well, if you mean that everything should be equal for every person, then no, because that would not be good for every person. But, we absolutely think that things could be more equitable for individuals, if we also focus on the collective community.
We champion the right of every man, woman and child to exercise agency, to make decisions to move forward in life, and we do not think that has to happen at the expense of the greater good. How can we grow in the character of Christ that asks, this is good for me, but is it good for everyone? If we had a room of 100 people, and 90 of them were sick, hungry and thirsty, but 10 were living their best life, would it be okay to make a case for the 10 and their good life, at expense of 90? Nope, we would acknowledge that something is broken, that we need to grieve this pain, and that all 100 will need to change, to grow, and that will likely mean that the 10 will need to sacrifice.
But that’s what a healthy community does, because it is made up of individuals who are willing to be selfless and generous so that the whole can flourish alongside each individual.
What do you need to give up? How do you need to be filled? Let’s keep growing together in community, as we continue to live our lives.
You're here for one of our favorite regular Why Tho episodes, where we answer Barbara Brown Taylor's important question, "What is saving your life right now?" Well, of course COFFEE, but we'll also give you the low down on what's keeping us laughing, resting and full of joy. From drinks to podcasts and more, we got the goods just for you. And five months into quarantine, who doesn't need to know that? Do you love the Why Tho Show?

We're imagining a way forward in relationship right now. With restrictions on what we can do together, where we can go, and how we can gather, our friendships, spiritual experiences, dating life, marriage, work life, well basically everything looks completely different. We personally are hurting from those losses and right now it would be so easy for us to hold tight to our way of life, our stuff, the way things used to be, but what if we asked God to help us become more generous, more mindful, more connected to him so that we can reimagine community. The world is changing, and in this episode, we want to help you move on from selfishness (and fighting on Facebook), and grow in love. We're with you, and we're for you!
So, you'll learn a few things on this podcast. For example, the age gap between Ashley (on the very end of the old millenials) and Tiffany (major millenial vibes) becomes very apparent. Ashley just got on Venmo and might hide money under the mattress, and Tiffany would like an app to pay her children for chores.
Also, in this week's news, the church where Tiffany grew up in allowed a rally in their parking lot, with elected officials (like the sheriff) over a long standing racist sign that hangs over the city where they declared the sign should stay (freedom of speech and such), and of course we're wondering, why tho?
Since when does this individual freedom folks want reign supreme over the sheer terror this places in a community? How have we so badly confused our politics with our Christianity? We need a restoration of community, because this is BULL CRAP. And certainly not gospel.
Can we begin to reimagine what community looks like? Now's the time to change, so let's do this, together.

Cancel this, cancel that, liberal social justice warrior, not doing enough, doing too much… WHO CAN KEEP UP?
This rhetoric, the name calling, judgmental, “shoulding all over people” vibes create an insane amount of shame in our lives. How can a scroll through the internet do this?
We’ve all experienced it and we want to help you peel back the layers, find that thread of shame in your life, discover why it’s affecting you, learn if you need to, and otherwise, LET IT GO.
Shame is removed from relationship. Shame has no end game other than pain and embarrassment. Shame will not transform our lives or perspective. It’s time for us to move through the digital world without it, and while we’re always learning and growing, we want to do that through relationship and love, not through judgment and shame. We love you guys - we’re in this with you, 2020, the weird, wild difficult world.

Take a minute to breath, fam, because this journey is long and demanding. On this episode, we are talking about why rest is necessary amid these times, and you'll also learn all about Ashley's lead foot and Tiffany's fear of breaking the rules.

The story of the rich young ruler sits with us this week as we consider the current state of our nation. What does it mean to be a person who listens to Jesus, to his instruction on what we need to give up in order to be made whole? What does it mean to listen to our brothers and sisters seeking to end injustice?
And most importantly, WHAT DO WE DO NEXT? Your sphere of influence is not too small to make a difference. Every small step toward ending injustice is an important one, so take it, even if you are afraid, do it, say it. Through prayer, a scripture and an important conversation, we're here to journey with you during this difficult time. Sending you our love, and always, we are people of hope, filled with compassion, believing God for freedom.

We're not beating around the bush on this episode of Why Tho, we're planning to hit white supremacy hard. Because here's the thing, we think the KKK, the Alt Right, the folks marching in Charlottesville chanting "Jews will not replace us!" are the real racists, and in comparing ourselves against them, so many white people absolve themselves of the sin of racism. But as Ashley says on today's episode "Supremacy is the tea we are steeped in from birth." We must do better, and stop with the social media sentiments, and take a deep, long look at ourselves. It's time to ask God how this world has indoctrinated us, grieve that, change that, and learn to cultivate an equitable existence for all people. The whites are not about to make America great again. No more BS. Until we recognize the full humanity in ALL people, there is work to be done. Tiffany shares covert and overt ways white supremacy manifests in our lives and in our communities, workplaces, schools, and how this impacts people of color. LISTEN UP. Neutral is not a zone on the issue of racism, and we are deeply committed to this work.

Disappointment is a honest to goodness reality in 2020. From watching kids graduate on Zoom, to financial loss, to major job changes, to relationship challenges, to the sting of isolation, we’re all managing our expectations and disappointment. RIP to our best laid plans and hello to a life we didn’t choose.
On today’s episode, we’re laughing together about things gone awry (specifically an alleged bird cartel inside Tiffany’s house), grieving the losses, and looking ahead with hope.

You know what sucks Why Tho Fam? Racism. It sucks because it is a lie from the pit of hell that says one race is superior over another, that the color of a person's skin determines their lot in life. But wait! We've had a black president! Racism doesn't exist! Slavery was 400 years ago! None of this is biblical! Stop being political!
We've heard all this and more, but you know what we've learned (and you too, if you're watching the news, or have any friends who don't look like you), the truth is this: Racism is alive and well. Injustice is alive and well, but we serve a wonderful Savior who is in the business of making every wrong thing right. He is close to the brokenhearted and scripture tells it like it is. Justice is not a trend, it is the heart of the Father.
You're going to love this episode. You might get offended, you might shout "SAY THAT," but more than both of those things, we pray you will open your ears, open your heart, and learn with us how to be a person who doesn't reduce justice to the latest tragedy or hashtag. Let's live with compassion, dealing with our own prejudices and racist tendencies, and cultivate the kind of community Jesus would be proud of.

On today’s episode, we’re taking a look at a twitter thread from one of our favorite psychologists, Hillary McBride. She talked about the power of comparative suffering, and how we can learn more about our own pain, and our ability (or inability) to cultivate empathy, by ranking our pain. She normalizes this as part of being human. What a load off during Quarantine! Gratitude grows when we realize what we do have, in comparison to others. And compassion increases when we find ways to act, to give, to receive from others.
We need to continue to realize our own needs, share them with people we love and trust, and do our best not to let envy or resentment grow, but instead let gratitude and compassion be our portion. We’re rooting for you dear Why Tho listeners! You’re the best part of our week!We love you dear listener - blessing you daily as we endure this pandemic together!

More time at the crib means more opportunities to evaluate why we do what we do, and why we have what we have. Listen, do you ever just look around at your house, or a closet, or the TRUNK OF YOUR CAR, and think to yourself WHY THO? Who did this to me? What are all these things? Why do we have them? And you know what we've realized? The same is true for our souls - our minds, hearts and bodies. Why do we keep carrying things that are, at worst, harming us, and at best, just aren't helping us? We let the voices and words of people from our past tell us who we are. We question our place in the world, compare ourselves to others, and resign ourselves to a less-than life. Spiritually, we can carry fear, insecurity, unbelief, and it hinders our capacity to trust and believe that God is good, and not just that, but that he is also good to us. Personally. Not just to other people. Friend, let us go with you this week, into the deep, and ponder what we need to put down, so we can pick up the things that will best serve our souls.
We love you dear listener - blessing you daily as we endure this pandemic together!

Stories are LIFE and women are incredible story tellers. It’s no secret that when God shows up in the Bible, speaks a word of life to a daughter, she finds the courage to go and tell the truth of the story, and she empowers and releases others to do the same.
Join us as we examine Mary Magdalene at the tomb, and the Woman at the Well. Be encouraged to wait, to be found faithful, to hear God say your name, to speak hope in the midst of grief, and to see light in the middle of darkness. Get ready to be encouraged, and don't worry, we'll have you laughing too. Per usual. We love you dear listener - blessing you daily as we endure this pandemic together!

When we're in the thick of it, we can start asking incredibly important questions: Is God good? Is he good to ME? It's easy to feel alone and isolated during the difficult times, wonder if there is hope for better days ahead. We want you to know dear listener, that even though the days are dark, God is still good. We have found him as a faithful friend and father, a comfort and present help in time of need. While none of what we're collectively facing is easy AT ALL, we trust that we will get through it. Together. In our loss and mourning, in our sickness and health, there is hope for a new day dawning. Shout out to the Great British Bake Off and the Queen for her recent speech to the Commonwealth, and the movie Emma, even though Tiffany thinks the main dude is miscast. Sidenote, did y'all know that Clueless is based off the novel Emma!!?? Ashley said "AS IF." (Cause she hates Emma, but loves Clueless. Typical.)

We love you Why Tho Fam, and we love encouraging you week after week. Thank you for listening!

Well, here we are still locked up in the cut and we're coming at you with what not to do this week, cause Covid-19 is tempting us to act all types of ways (many not recommended by the FBI). Here's what we hope for you dear listeners, that you make it to the other side of this with your life still intact.
We know there's no way to go through a global pandemic unscathed but we want to save you from three things:
1) A life of crime 2) An unnecessary six-pack 3) Hating yourself and every member of your household.
So, we got you with things to make sure you DON'T do during Covid-19.

Holy smokes guys, this happened fast (just like Europe and Asia warned us it would), but here we are, quarantined as a mug, and maybe terrified for the future of our businesses, families, and friends. Please remember to reach out to people you trust, especially if you feel isolated, or are struggling with depression, and we are praying fiercely for you, dear listener. You are not alone. We'd love to hear from you!

From parasites to dehydration to late night Twitter to Twilight book clubs to clutter, we're sharing all the things you might want to pass on. Why? Because we care about your mental health! Sometimes we feel like we have to do all the things, be all the things, finish all the things, even when it would serve us better if we would stop a few things. Everything and everyone is vying for our attention - ads on social media, ads in the supermarket, people we want to impress (but don't even like, or who don't like us) - and it's good to focus ourselves on what we want our ordinary, daily life to look like. So in the spirit of letting go, here's our suggestions for all the things you need to pass on tho!

This is a special episode of Why Tho as Ashley recently visited the Equal Justice Initiative's Legacy Museum and Lynching Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama. We're sharing some of the history of racism in America that she learned on her trip. You'll hear thoughtful questions, powerful, devastating images, and receive recommendations for how to keep learning about the lasting effects of racism in America. We hope you'll see how you can affect change in your sphere of influence, and remember, that we're all interconnected in the beloved community of Christ. We each bear his image.

Target does not get to decide when my partner spoils me with chocolate and roses. YOU BETTER BELIEVE we will shake our heads if any man spent over $100, or in Tiffany's case, over $10. Yes, of course we like chocolate and roses, but for petes sake, romance isn't about the fluff. It's about the heart. It's about reciprocity and communication. This episode covers romance for those who find themselves in today's dating scene and for those who are married. A little something for errr'body! Enjoy.

There is no skirting around the fact that those who are teachable and those who see themselves as life-long learners know the key to adulting. The honest truth is that everyone has something to teach us, alright. We can learn from the waiter at PF Changs, a book written 100 years ago, or from two women on a podcast who had no idea they needed to change their oil every 3,000 miles.
In this episode, we talk about why choosing to learn what you don't know is necessary to ADULT. It just is.

Relating to others (all the others) is a mad important Adulting skill. We are talking top priority, in 2020, and we want to help you do it, STAT. Instead of splintering into factions, we believe the generations are better together.
Whatever your age, it's important to respect those who have gone before you and those who are coming behind you, and to offer mutual respect to build a bridge of connectedness. We can forgo what we think we deserve (entitlement) from others and let humility drive us toward one another instead.
This is a show to share, dear listener, because we know that you know that we know that relating to all ages and stages is HARD OUT HERE FOR THE HUMANS. So, let's do better together. Thanks for listening!

Polarization, villainization, and manipulation. Three big things we are helping you avoid in 2020. With the internet pastoring us due to the hours of our life we give to it, people are becoming increasingly settled in their camps and echo chambers. That leads us to polarizing narratives about others that are at minimum, not helpful, and often harmful. It becomes easy to make villains out of people we don't agree with, or even those who have hurt us, but in the words of Father Greg Boyle, "God doesn't have enemies. God only has children."
We have to journey from the opposite ends toward the middle to a common place where we honor the image of God in the people we meet. (And yes, stay safe! Some people cannot be in our lives! They are too toxic!) Manipulation has a place in this too, and while adults may not go full on "mean girl," people who push past boundaries constantly drain us and have a "me first" agenda in everything they do. Their ways need to be recognized and dealt with so we can prioritize life giving relationships. We've got tips and strategies to help you do just that!

Technology is here to stay and it's time for us to thoughtfully consider what we allow to shape our mind, recognize how it affects our interactions with others and establish what kind of boundaries we want to place on our usage to help us relate to one another in meaningful ways. Are our devices taking over our lives? Is there something in between us all the time? Are we being dum dums on the internet? From comments to private messages, people are freer with harsh words, acting as experts in judgment and accusation. We're just wondering where that leaves our real relationships? We want to help you be a person of peace online, in real life, and a person who respects others values and convictions while lovingly standing in our own.
We mentioned a few funnies on this episode including Ashley's new hat, from Keke Palmer's website, and this is the video meme you need in your life: https://twitter.com/mattryanx/status/1172208456708886528?s=20

We hope you take time to reflect and learn from this year. Even this decade! You’re powerful and you’ll probably be amazed at all you’ve accomplished as you look back on your life. Gratitude brings so much joy (unless you're complaining and Sister So & So and her Brother Bob are so happy you could die). Also, joy is vulnerable. It takes courage to celebrate, especially when things aren't going great or when we're waiting for breakthrough. Still, gratitude is like engine oil for gumption. When we practice gratefulness, we are less likely to envy others, surrender to discontent, or feel like nothing is ever enough. We are more connected, more able to stay present in the daily moments of life, giving our best where we are. That's gumption - the will to continue living out our purpose, fulfilling our responsibilities, and giving our best to the people right in front of us. We don't want to make light of the very real challenges we all go through; at the same time, we know that habitual gratitude will produce a happier mental state, healthier lifestyle, and we want that for you!

Peppermint mochas, mulled wine, cheese boards (duh), pine needles, holiday candles, shopping lists, and all of it has the potential to be so lovely... and so, expensive. If you're not careful, you can dig a hole of debt, and a soul crushing mountain of anxiety, trying to do all the things and please all the people. BUT WE GOT YOU! Holidays are better on a budget. Sure, it might require grown-up conversations (no, I can't participate in a gift exchange this year, but I'd love to come and party!), and it might mean stretching decor, or getting better storage, but who can put a price on SANITY?! We'll tell you: NO ONE. Save your money. Love your people. Resist the urge for more and discover clarity and contentment.

Listen, it's impossible to top last year's Thanksgiving episode - it was so hilarious that we were hearing from you cheeky little listeners for WEEKS. So, here's a recap, and we hope you have a great week gathering with your people, in celebration of the complicated American holiday, Thanksgiving.
Guys, seriously, can we talk about turkey tho? Who wants to have a dry piece of poultry as the main event? Everyone knows that SIDES are the hero of this Thanksgiving story. Why doesn't anyone serve filet mignon with twice baked potatoes and a cheese platter? Unless you're Tiffany, who had a vegetarian help her stuff her turkey one year, wearing dishwashing gloves with leftover soap on them. This episode is filled with laughs, to accompany your Thanksgiving holiday prep. And don't worry, if you're listening from somewhere else in the world, you'll cry tears of laughter too. Also, sorry to the entire United Kingdom from Ashley. We think she might have failed geography.

This is an issue that impacts us all. We can experience loneliness even if we are completely surrounded by others, or perhaps in a new season of life (like motherhood, or empty nesting, or navigating the loss of a loved one), or when we're in recovery making new choices, or feeling on the outside at work, school, or even at home. Loneliness is real tho, and this episode, Ashley and Tiffany discuss how they've felt it in the past (yes, there have been holidays alone), how they experience it now, and offer practical ways to deal with feeling alone. Dear listener, the holidays are coming, and we want you to take care of your heart and mind during this time. We love you, and we're not the same without you!

Listen, we're here for the glow up. Tiffany gets two emails per day from Sephora and she's satisfied with her life choices. Ashley has a standing gel manicure appointment every month. Good curling irons are life, and so is Glossier lip balm and boy brow, okay?! However, the New York Times wrote an opinion piece about the wellness industry, "The New Spiritual Consumerism" and gave thoughtful commentary on who wellness is actually for, and if we are trying to satisfy our needs in unrealistic, unhealthy ways. As we approach the holiday season, this dialogue is important, not only because our sense of loneliness and depression statistically increases, but because we can try to put a bandaid over a bullet hole, avoiding what's really going on beneath the surface by dealing with only, well, the surface. Share this episode with a friend, and talk about what ways you might be avoiding true soul-care, by filling your time with self-care and using your money on self-care. Remember, most of the time, what we might need is community care. Message us, and let us know how it goes!

When we really know each other, we can really love each other. To suspend judgment, step into a person's context, seek to understand, and walk alongside a friend means that we can experience companionship in every season of life. None of us have a perfect life, and all of us know what it means for the reality of our life to hang well beneath our ideal of what life should be. Each of us also know what it's like to go through an identity crisis (HELLO MIDDLE SCHOOL, WE ARE NOT FRIENDS), and suffer brokenness and hurt in some area of our life. In this episode, we're talking about being a friend through it all, and also, since it's National Adoption Awareness Month, highlighting those who carry adoption in their story (like Tiffany), and what it means to never fully be done grieving the loss of blood parents, but also how beautiful it is to see redemption and grace at work. This is a special episode for the Why Tho Gals, and a subject near and dear to our hearts. What's been your experience with adoption? Share your thoughts with us! We'd love to hear from you about how this episode and this topic impacts you personally.

Everyone is talking about the conversation at the conference where John MacArthur told Beth Moore to go home, went on to say that there is no circumstance for women to preach, ever, and suggested that women of color and immigrants have no place at the table talking theology and translation. SAY WHAT HOMEBOY!
Not only are we not going home, but we believe the Bible very clearly endorses the body of Christ operating in the five-fold ministry (unless there's two bodies of Christ - one for men and one for women), and that BOTH men and women are called to be apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers. Passage after passage teaches us that women are not only called to speak, but called to serve Jesus and people. We see countless examples of women actively living out the gospel of goodness and grace in their spheres of influence (INCLUDING THE CHURCH).
So, yeah, we went there, and we hope to encourage you to stay in your place, keep running in your lane, speak up, and to live out your purpose on this Earth. Let's get on with it. We don't need an endorsement from the church gatekeepers. We have the highest endorsement from Christ, who is the true shepherd, empowering, loving and serving us right into the will of God.

A good question can unlock a moment of life. When we don't have understanding; when we feel alone; when we're struggling or suffering; when we're confused or lonely... asking the right question helps us settle into the season, and see beyond our circumstances.
We all have times when the monotony wears on us and we need to see God. So, we're asking a very important question on today's podcast: Where do you see God right now? Because we need to pull back the layers of our day, our life, our relationships and our junk, to see God where we are, and learn to enjoy the people and places we're in.

From catcalls to comments about our weight, height or hair, to someone suggesting we might be on our period if we're having a difficult day, to people talking behind our backs, to abuse and more, women know what it means to fight through challenging experiences. ON. THE. DAILY. Sometimes, we're fatigued, depressed, bone-tired, and irritable because we don't realize how much we deal with regularly, how much we have to stuff down to keep going. BUT WE MUST, and it's okay to take a time out to actually acknowledge what we've gone through, and might currently be going through, so that we stop wearing a mask of perfectionism (and expecting others to be perfect as well), and begin to restore joy, energy and rest to our souls, and our relationships. The world may not be safe or kind to women tho, but we are clinging to grace and goodness, and we are determined to help each other hold on to hope.

If anyone ever says, "Bless your little heart", and you have the courage to ask them what they mean, you will regret it. This is not a blessing. Trust us. Somebody is really looking for the opportunity to tell you something about yourself that you don't want to hear (or they are going to say it behind your back). Sometimes, truth telling about OTHERS is easier than telling the truth about OURSELVES. But if we want to see personal growth in our lives, then it's time to start getting honest about our own lives. Food is for sure one of our love languages, and we have discovered that the Bible is actually a book for foodies. From Jael, to Esther, to four teenage boys kidnapped and enslaved in Babylon, to a miracle of water to wine at a wedding, to Jesus at the last supper. The story of humanity starts with an apple, and finishes with an incredible, Pinterest worthy, redemptive, banquet feast. There's a spiritual element to gathering at the table, where we are leveled, and the potential for vulnerability, and even exposure, increases. Freedom, justice, miracles, courage, and gumption can all be nurtured at the table. It's no wonder that so many of us struggle (or have struggled) with body image issues, diet culture, and eating disorders - because so much goodness is possible at the table. Dear listener, you are going to LOVE this conversation, so share it with a friend.

Forgiveness is one of our favorite F-words. Forgiveness leads to wholeness and that is what makes it so powerful. We're fragmented when we choose to remain stuck in our hurts and wounds. We become suspicious of others, and we struggle to move forward in health and strength in the big offenses. Especially in our closest relationships. We make vows that hinder our purpose, and lead to greater isolation and loneliness (I will never let this type of person hurt me again; I will never commit to intimacy again; I will never risk my heart in relationship again because I fear rejection or abandonment; I will always hate myself for what I've done, or what has been done to me; etc, etc.). It can be hard to be honest and to enjoy ourselves and others, but forgiveness can unlock freedom and breed trust and safety in relationships. Can you imagine if the Christian witness was a big fat I'M SORRY, instead of the prideful, I'M RIGHT AND YOU'RE WRONG, that we see so often in the media? We think more people would see the great love and companionship God intended for us to experience. In this episode, learn to let go, and understand the power of forgiveness.

We believe in the power of a story, and are convinced that we are living in an unprecedented time, when we need the truth tellers to rise. Wanna know our beef with 2019? Common sense is not that common tho. Like, aren't there some things we should all know are unacceptable in society? For example: Don't say every old thought that comes into your head. Don't do every dumb thing you feel like doing. From the smallest uses of language, to the social tact that helps us read a room, to the refusal to pick a side and be a hater... We need some common sense and basic human decency. (Can we get an Amen?) Also, we are distraught over the fact that bulletproof backpacks are being purchased in 2019 as a new school year begins. There has to be a better way, and while some people like to fight from one side of the fence, and shout about how the other side is wrong, how about we be the people in the middle, healing and helping with the collateral damage, from the arguing of people who are too smart for their own doggone good.

The science is there (but you'll have to google it): reading may stave off Alzheimers, aids us in quest for empathy, provides the brain with necessary food to function, and gives us something to talk about at the dinner table, or at awkward parties when meeting strangers. Books make the world go round, which is probably why dictators burn them. Words are powerful, life giving and life changing (unless you're a dictator, where the opposite is true). From the book Night to Jesus Feminist, to Barbara Brown Taylor and Brother Lawrence, we've got the goods, and we want to share it all with you. What are you reading? Share with us, so we can add them to our Summer Reads! Thanks for listening!

Apparently, cheese board specialist is a job now, and we're just wondering how to apply, because cheese boards are LIFE THO. A giant piece of wood, full of cheese, meats, nuts, dried fruit, chocolates, dips, and whatever else you like. This is the stuff that makes kitchen conversations legit. Which to us, means hospitality and hilarity. (I mean, some people can be fake around a cheese board, but we can't, sooooo). In our digital world, where we are highly connected, but lacking true community, we cannot forget to gather together, face to face, and we highly recommend meat and cheese. Serve cashew cheese and tofu if you want, but put it on a board and serve your people good eats and good love.

"Who is my neighbor?" Isn't this the age old question? Particularly now, when our neighbors might include our co-workers, social media buddies, friends from former cities, people who share our faith tradition, as well as people who don't, and of course, those who live on our street. That's a lot of people to share connections with so how do we practice neighborliness in 2019? How do we avoid the constant clapback on social media and the temptation to grow callous in a perpetually needy world? Well, that's easy, we just need to take a little encouragement from the Fred Rogers Playbook. Learning to see all people with dignity and compassion, speaking truth to injustice and rudeness, living with the kind of consideration that sincerely commands us, and others, to do better is what Fred did so well for so long. Friend, we MUST DO BETTER both online and in person, to exemplify the grace and goodness we want to see in this world. If we all do our part, we'll change the question from "Who is my neighbor?" to "Won't you be my neighbor?" (We heart you Mr. Rogers.)

Business Insider reported that women earn 80.7 cents for every dollar that her male counterpart earns. Statistics also show that college educated females now outnumber males in the work force, but are still not fairly compensated. Tiffany and Ashley have firsthand experience with this, and this is an important dialogue for us to have. We want to see women advance, not at the expense of men, but because equal pay for equal work should be our baseline. Recently, Luna Bar, having fallen in love with the US Women's Soccer Team, like the rest of us, decided to close a pay gap. For their team bonuses, the USWNT was short a little more than 31,000 per person, and Luna Bar gifted that amount to every single player on the Women's Team! So basically, we shall be eating the Luna bars until Jesus comes home, to show our full support of this female empowering company! From negotiating pay, to bonuses, to work load versus wages, women often get the short end of the stick. There's hope for change, and we can see it over the decades, through the voices of women and men who want to continue to close the pay gap.

First of all, Facebook Quizzes. Guys, we love them. Okay, Ashley loves them, but it is important to know how many states we've traveled to, and which Disney princess we are, right? Okay, maybe not, but the big takeaway is, it's okay to evolve. (Especially beyond FB quizzes.) In every season of life, we are becoming, and we have to allow ourselves to grow, and give ourselves permission to make necessary changes, and to step into a gap when there is a need. Noor Inayat Khan, the Indian princess (as the BBC calls her) spied for Britain. She was born in Russia (1914) to a father from India and a mother from New Mexico, was a children's book author, a Red Cross trained nurse, and eventually went on to become a spy in Nazi Germany. She sent wire-tap coded messages back to England to aid in overthrowing the Axis powers during WWII. She was executed in Dachau concentration camp before she turned 30, while holding the hand of another female political prisoner of war. Noor was brave, powerful, and allowed herself to evolve, as her life's context evolved, and did an incredible amount of good with her one and only life. We want you to know that you can make changes too. If something's no longer working for you, you can stop. If you have a job right now, but know there's something burning within you, you can pursue it. If you see a need, you can absolutely step in to meet it, even if your contribution feels small. A whole lot of smalls, can bring a whole lot of healing.

Can you imagine being asked to submit to a completely irrational request, a rule that violated your humanity, a policy that made your superior at the expense of someone else? Of course you can... because we've all been coerced or forced into becoming less of who, or what, we were created to become. There are times when civil disobedience (what living legend John Lewis calls, "good trouble") is required to disrupt the current order, structure, or even law, and help others understand that we are all created with inherent value and dignity, and must be treated accordingly. Journey with us as we talk about why peaceful protest is not rebellion, why we need to get over our superiority, and how the decision of a 15-year-old girl in Montgomery, Alabama to not give up her seat on a bus, though she was terrified, and jailed in an adult penitentiary, paved the way for 42-year-old, Rosa Parks to do the same and to become one of the key faces of the Civil Rights movement. Women are powerful, and strong, and when we resist the right things, and take action toward equality, change is possible. Our collective effort, no matter how small it feels as an individual, is making a difference. Who can survive anything without grit and grace? Precisely no one. Every day, we are challenged to outwork our values in the face of temptation, pressure, and real-life problems. But when we hold to our convictions, and stand up to do the right thing, in the ordinary, daily decisions, we find ourselves walking in truth and integrity. No matter how tempting, no matter how much stress we experience, no matter how our problems bear down on us, we are able to live with strength and courage. Speaking of courage, do you want to know about the three sisters who toppled a dictatorship? Get ready to have your mind blown by Las Mariposas. Women who refused to give up their bodies to evil leadership, and would not surrender the love of their families and marriages, and contiued to dream and work for freedom. The Maribal Sisters from the Domincan Republic are our (and soon to be your) heroes! As promised, if you want more, read or watch, In the Time of Butterflies, and here's the article we read from during our podcast: https://www.rejectedprincesses.com/princesses/the-mirabal-sisters We love stories, especially in the summer, and we thank you for joining us for this episode of Why Tho.

To live without apologizing for who you are, to pursue and remain in rich relationships with others, to gain momentum through partnership, to push against every obstacle and overcome-- that a grace-filled life, indeed. You know we love Biggie Smalls and we have mad love for the Notorious RBG, who graduated high school at 15, and attended Harvard as 1 of 9 women in a class of 500 men. She fights for equality for both men and women (YES to Weinberger vs. Wiesenfeld), and became a Supreme Court Justice. A mama, a wife, a lawyer, judge, and a friend, Ruth's life offers us a powerful example of partnership across multiple sectors for the greater good. We are created to work together with others to thrive in our purpose, and build a better world, no matter what our current title, role, or aspiration may be. Do good where you are, one step at a time. Oh dear, summer is coming and we know that means lax schedules, vacations (maybe) and in general, fighting the temptation to check out of our actual lives. We get it, believe us, and we are still trying to figure out how we're gonna work with two kids at home all summer. (Fix it, Jesus.) We cover five areas where you can take back your life: spiritually, relationally, systematically, organizationally, and socially. You don't have to be a victim to your own calendar. You can take back your life so that you are building a daily experience that isn't perfect, but has a rhythm of rest and replenishment. You've got what it takes to live a life you love.

When did you realize your ambition? Were you a little kid? Did anyone rain on your ambition parade? Let's talk about it because we believe ambition is a good thing. It aids in discovering your purpose and fulfilling your calling. The Why Tho Gals talk about the differences between men and women when it comes to drive and determination, and how from a young age, people and organizations are either pushing us to excel or pulling us back from our natural instincts. Whether you feel called to a career, to the home, or some combo of both, this podcast will help you as you deal with your desires, and become the person you were created to be. Body image impacts women everywhere. Our culture is obsessed with image. From magazine covers to social media ads to the groups we belong to, we're receiving implicit and explicit messages that the sum total of our value is in our pants size, our lack of wrinkles, our hair and skin color.

So, who's sick of talking about privilege in America? Right, not us, so bear with us as we dive right in. We believe this is still an important conversation. Plus, one of our cohosts has had quite a few run-ins with the law (can't wait for you to hear that story), and both Tiffany and Ashley have served as prison chaplains in America. Whether we're talking about race or gender, it's true that there are things that people with a certain skin color, and men, will just never have to deal with, ever. Gina Crosley-Corcoran, author of the essay, "Explaining White Privilege to a Broke White Person," says, "Recognizing privilege simply means being aware that some people have to work much harder just to experience the things you take for granted (if they ever can experience them at all)." If you've been looking for a safe space to listen to helpful dialogue that won't shame you or diminish you tune into this episode of Why Tho. As promised we recommend the book The Very Good Gospel by Lisa Sharon Harper for a more in-depth discussion, and if you're a clergy leader, we recommend Lisa's coaching and speaking, through her organization, Freedom Road. We also recommend the podcast Pantsuit Politics. ("Sarah from the left. Beth from the right. No shouting. No insults. Plenty of nuance.") We're grateful you tuned in!

25 minutes is not enough time to unpack the difficulties we experience as women because of our gender, but hey, here we go! It's common within nearly every context of society for women to feel subservient, or not good enough, or like the sole responsibility for all emotional and physical labor belongs to us. We think there's a better way, and that women can be, and should be valued and viewed equally.
Learn with Ashley and Tiffany how to speak up, how to honor other women, and that you're not alone as you navigate the gender gaps in your sphere of influence.

Regina George is our worst nightmare, because she grows up to become an adult, and make her own little Regina George babies that our kids have to deal with. Why tho? We've likely all experienced the overt and passive aggressive behavior from other women that discourages, silences or manipulates us. In this episode, Tiffany and Ashley unpack the She Bully, how to deal with her, and how to resist giving her power over your life.

Oh man, we are nostalgic creatures. In the midst of a relationship that's no longer working tho, we sometimes struggle to tell ourselves the truth. Perhaps the person we're dating has been revealing their poor character, pushing our boundaries, and making us feel like crap all the time. Maybe a co-worker who used to be in our corner starts spittin' out cutting comments, or tears us down in meetings now that we're in a new position. Perhaps we've added a few babies to our marriage, and we keep trying to make things go back to what they used to be instead of embracing who we are and where we're going as a couple and family. Listen, we feel you. It can be tough to grow with others, to stick it out and change in order to flourish together. It can be incredibly difficult to let go of a relationship we thought would last forever, but we know is not building the future we hope to have. In this episode, Ashley and Tiffany tackle signs of a relationship ending, and how to move forward in a relationship, that has just transitioned to a new season. The relational struggle is real, and we're in this with you!

Whether we're building our dream, our family, our career, our convictions, or ideals, we all want folks in our corner who will encourage us and tell us when we're headed off a cliff. Plus, when "you know what" hits the fan, we all need our people. They'll answer the phone call at midnight. They're ready to fight an ex-boyfriend. They'll come to our kid's birthday parties (which we all know are the worst). They're supportive of our crazy ideas and never let us settle for the lesser version of ourselves. Together, we're brave and vulnerable, honest and true, hilarious and helpful. It's been said that we become like the five people we spend the most time with, so the people in our lives really matter tho. Be encouraged that even if you haven't found your dear friends, they're out there, and we want to remind you that you're not alone.

In the swipe right culture, dating ain't no joke, and figuring out how to have desires, without compromising convictions is a real struggle. Here's a few things we want you to know: Singleness is not a disease, for goodness sake. We totally believe in online dating. We want married people to stop saying unhelpful, #WHYTHO comments, and we hope you know that you are phenomenal and seriously worthy of love and companionship. You deserve a seat at the table in leadership, and you bring a unique experience and perspective that we need. Tiffany seems to think the Mighty Ducks is a serious underdog story, but Ashley is more of a Goonies girl. Either way, the research proves it, we love to root for the underdog. We see ourselves in the one with all the obstacles, and as two fellow comeback queens, we know what it takes to have the odds stacked against you, and still learn to thrive in life. The underdog is scrappy, creative, with humility and hustle, passion and commitment, and today's episode will remind you, that you might lose a few fights, but overall, you're positioned to win. Join Ashley and Tiffany as they share how to navigate the messy middle of life, how to glean every gold nugget in the hard places, and how to persevere in the process to see progress. Okay, so, the Fyre Festival and the Amex Black Card got us thinking about something serious: The Hatership. Those folks who remind you what you're not, who you used to be, and who sit on the sidelines of your life, telling you what's up 24/7. #byefelicia, cause we really need to silence the haters tho. Join us as we discuss how to deal with the internet haters, real life haters, self haters, used to be supporters who are now haters, and how to remember the truth, and lean into relationships to recover. Yes to growth, helpful critiques, and opportunities to get better. Heck to the NO to the haters. You'll want to share this episode with friends and frenemies. Loneliness is a problem in our world. We can even be surrounded by incredible people, who love us, and that we love, and without choosing to be vulnerable and honest, we won't experience the true power of a dream fulfilled. Cause it really does take a village tho. To build a dream, to build a life, to build the lives and dreams of others, we need people. People who help us navigate the highs and lows of life. People who will be with us when our day job ain't looking nothing like our dream job. People who will hold our arms up when we want to quit. People who answer the phone when we call in the middle of the night. There's no need to do life alone, and yeah, we know, people are crazy sometimes, but hey, so are we, soooo... Let's find the right kind of crazy people, who see us, help us, and allow us to see and help them as well. Teamwork makes the dream work, as the good old cheesy saying goes. #truetho

Dreams are no joke. They keep us up at night and the more we pursue them, the more we have a hankerin' for them to come true. The truth is, too many of us feel like our past choices or lack of access to resources or gender, or (fill in the blank) is reason enough to give up on our dreams altogether. Here's the thing, dreaming is your birthright and you owe to yourself and the world to get after it. Go on, girl. Get yours.

Who else is obsessed with the Enneagram, DISC profile, Buzzfeed Disney Princess Quiz, and whatever else tells us who we are, and what we're good at? Okay, great, well, this podcast is the opposite of that. Cause your weaknesses might be killing you tho. You're welcome. What we don't want is for you to waste time improving your weaknesses, but what we do want is for you to understand how your blindspots could be impacting your leadership and capacity. We all have character flaws and things we're not great at, and that's why we need each other to thrive, so we cover each other, and experience freedom in our strengths and weaknesses. Shame has no power in a healthy community, and that's what we want for you.

Why is peace so difficult for us to find? We'll tell you why, cause it's hard out here for the humans. Anxiety, fear, stress, and daily responsibilities can choke the life right out of our heads and hearts. Plus, we can get so bottlenecked in our own stuff, that we don't even notice how desperately others are crying out for relief. Peace is possible, brave soul, no matter what you're facing, and in this episode, Tiffany and Ashley share exactly why you need to fight for peace. Plus, you'll learn how to cultivate peace in your life, and in the world around you. Also, ode to Martin Luther King, Jr., who we celebrate in America this week, a King of establishing peace, no matter the pain or the cost.

Perfection. No mistakes. No failing. Hiding behind an image. But when you feel stuck tho, these are ridiculous ideals. To move forward, to gain momentum, we will get messy. We will make mistakes. Failure is certain (sorry dear listener, but it's true). And we'll have to value our integrity over our image. Dealing with the real, over the ideal, can help us decide our next best step, so we can get ourselves unstuck. As you start the new year, how do you want to move forward? What areas of life do you want to see change? We hope this week's podcast will inspire you to dream big, fail forward, and value the contribution you were created to make.

New year, who dis? Ummm, the same person we were yesterday because no one can change overnight. As we close the door on 2018, and begin a new year, it's important to ask, who do you want to be? We are not human doings, we are human beings, and if we focus more on who we are becoming, then our goals will be a natural outcome of who we are, rather than our best attempts to do, do, do. Listen to Ashley share her failure at the Five F's (Family, Fitness, Faith, Frienship, Finance) year after year until she finally threw New Year's resolutions out the window. You'll love hearing why. Tiffany shares how she orders her priorities, and chooses to do only what she can, so that she lives from her highest convictions and values. Share this episode with a friend and talk together about who you want to become as you step into 2019. You're remarkable, and we have loved spending the last three moths of 2018 with you!

Women are strong as heck because the lives they lead require courage, conviction, and resolve. Where women are not empowered, communities and nations suffer poverty, lack of economic growth, and a diminished view of God. From single parents to activists and authors, stay-at-home moms and executives, children, teens and young adults, women are spectacular, uniquely created to make a difference in the world. On this episode, Ashley and Tiffany talk about the power of a free woman, what happens when she tells the truth, and how she can partner with others to affect change.

Trees, lights, presents, parties, and don't forget depression, loneliness, and the loss of what could have been... Ugh, holidays, why tho? With the magic of Christmas, and the busyness of the holiday season, it's easy to mask the deeper emotions beneath the surface. On this episode, Tiffany and Ashley share why you need to decide your traditions. When you suffer loss, divorce, and pain from childhood, how do you imagine the future? If you make a significant life shift, what happens to the long standing traditions of your past? One day at a time, managing expectations, choosing courage, resisting busy and overwhelm, you can pull the essence of the traditions you love, while creating a safe, enjoyable space for you and your people. No matter what you're facing, it is possible to find joy and hope here at the holidays.

December is upon us, and so are the enticing end caps at Target. Now is the perfect time for us to remember that less is more. With one more month before a new year, we hereby grant you permission to edit yourself. Rather than going a mile wide and an inch deep with more, choose to do less in your relationships, finances, holiday craze, faith, and information consumption. Presence over presents. Peace over pressure. Simplicity over stress. In this episode, learn why less is more tho, and gain some practical tools to resist the culture of more that permeates our lives.

Community and connection - isn't that what we all want? It's what Facebook wants to create with millions of profiles (jury's out on that one), because they have identified our shared need. On this episode, Tiffany and Ashley discuss the importance of gathering together at the table to experience community and connection, and to be reminded that we're not alone in celebration or struggle. Listen, whether it's frozen pizza, fancy place settings, delivery service, or fine fare from your favorite restaurant, the point is that you spend time together. In a polarized, digital world, gather at the table where the ground is level, and we can share our laughs, fears, stories and concerns.

Guys, seriously, can we talk about turkey on Thanksgiving tho? Who wants a dry piece of poultry as the main event tho? Everyone knows that SIDES are the hero of the Thanksgiving story. Why doesn't anyone serve filet mignon with twice baked potatoes and a cheese platter? Especially if you're Tiffany, who had a vegetarian help her stuff her turkey one year, wearing dishwashing gloves with leftover soap on them. This episode is filled with laughs to accompany your Thanksgiving holiday prep. Don't worry, if you're listening from somewhere else in the world, you'll cry tears of laughter too. Also, sorry to the entire United Kingdom from Ashley. We think she might have failed geography tho.

Repeat after us: "No is a complete sentence." You are allowed to say no. No to more notifications than one human being can handle tho. No to the haters tho. No to the peer pressure tho. No, just no. But also, kindness is king. A healthy adult operates by employing responsible communication to clarify boundaries and set healthy expectations for themselves and others. You've got what it takes to stop responding to every single thing on the Earth. You can learn to live at peace with doing what only you can do to live your best life. You don't have to respond to everything and everyone, because sanity will leave your soul, and our hope for you is a clear conscious, and a healthy soul.

What do we do with the little time we have to ourselves? What do we do when we are at a party, or with our family, or at dinner with friends? Is our phone our primary safety net? Do we reach for it every time we are bored, uncomfortable, or alone? Do we take time to dream, to sit, or just be? Well, Ashley admits to being a full-on iPhone addict, and Tiffany has done too much research to be addicted, but both of these women know the struggle is real. In this episode, we talk about why you need to turn off your phone tho, so you can reduce stress, anxiety, isolation, and learn what is refreshing and life-giving to your soul long, instead of just moment-to-moment gratification.

We build our lives around our desire to be sure. This is this. That is that. 2 + 2 = 4. If I do this, it will produce that. If I give this, or say this, or do this, I expect that you will give that, say that, or do that back. But real life isn't actually like that. As much as we try to build a black and white world where we are safe, secure, and in control, we are often reminded that what we have built for ourselves is a false sense of safety, security and control, and we have to reckon with life in the grey. We don't budget the emotional labor required to handle the hard stuff of life, or the unpredictable variables we can't control. But grey is okay tho, and on this episode, Ashley and Tiffany speak to living a life in process, and growing in wonder, relationship and joy.

People lie, cheat, gossip, act wild, don't do what they said they would do, ghost us like they have lost their minds, and we still keep them in our lives! WHY THO? Maybe it's because we fear the consequences or repercussions of changing the boundaries in the relationship. We fear the loss of connection, or the rumor mill, or that a potential opportunity will be taken if we hold people accountable for their actions. We fear rejection and loneliness, and we are so afraid that the people we love the most won't ever change. We fear we'll be trapped in a crazy cycle of hurt and pain. In this episode, we learn why we need to stop making excuses for people tho so that our relationships are loving and meaningful, instead of scary and manipulative. No relationship is perfect, but we don't have to stay in transactional, dysfunctional relationships. We can work through our character flaws with the right people who are also working through their flaws. Time to get off the crazy cycle, and say BYE THO to people who have no intention of actually loving us. #byetho #whytho Who needs this episode? Share it with them!

Why are we so scared to quit what needs to be quit? Sometimes we forget that it's not just about what we are walking away from, but what we are walking into. There's an expansive world of choice and love out there, and the microcosm of our moment (especially if the job, relationship, mentor, employer, pastor, etc. is unhealthy or unsustainable) can make us feel like, if we quit the world will end. Will quitting mess with our calling? Will we miss God? Will we have any other opportunities? Do we have what it takes to navigate the unknown? Here's why quitting could be the best decision you ever made tho: You can build a life you love, one step at a time. This episode will help you make an exit plan, dream bigger, and recognize unsafe people and places, so you can say, bye tho, with honor and grace.

Comparison is killing us, and with the lifestyle bloggers, Pinterest perfecters, and everything from the magazines in the grocery aisle to the expectations of everyone else, we are struggling to have it all, do it all and be it all. On this week's episode, Tiffany and Ashley ask Why Tho? Who set up this impossible standard, and why are we trying to live up to it? Doing a few things well, instead of doing all the things kinda well (or not well at all, tbh), can change your life! Emotionally, mentally and physically, we only have so much to give each day, and we can decide what and who we value, and stop trying to do it all, so we can live a life we love. Have you subscribed to our podcast? Good work - we love spending a few moments with you! Ashley, who had a pHd in pretending, learned to take her mask off and get honest with a little old-fashioned truth-telling. Overcoming drugs, alcohol, an eating disorder, and dysfunctional relationships, Ashley opens up about the journey of recovery, dealing with fear, and learning to live in meaningful, reciprocal relationships. She started in Eden, North, Carolina, then moved to Los Angeles, and now lives in Manhattan, where she pastors a church on Wall Street with her husband, Cody, and is a full-time writer and speaker. For close to a decade, Ashley has been advocating for change, speaking out against injustice and serving people across diverse spaces and places. She's hilarious and honest, and nearly brain-dead from sleep deprivation while raising two young sons in Harlem, New York. Why wouldn't you want to listen to that story tho? Tiffany, who was left in an orphanage at two-days-old in India, has overcome impossible odds to become an adoptive mother and birth mother, and wife to her husband Derek. She's a full-time writer, international speaker, and the Gatherer-in-Chief of SIP, a table gathering that serves hundreds of women each season in the Seattle area. She drops wisdom bombs like: "Fixing the exterior doesn't fix the interior," and "What's breaking you, is also what's making you." She talks about shame, fear, anxiety, discrimination, abandonment, dreams and more. Why wouldn't you want to share this podcast tho?
