Are Christians falling for the self-help trap?

Everywhere you look, the culture screams “optimize yourself”—through books, coaching, morning routines, even AI telling you how to live. But here’s the truth: no planner, no hack, no “reset routine” will ever give you the peace and purpose your soul is craving.

In this episode of The Thought Vault, I’m unpacking the self-help lie Christians are falling for—and showing you why surrendering to Christ, not striving harder, is the only way to lasting transformation.

📖 We’ll cover:
✅ The 3 warning signs you’ve been discipled by hustle culture more than by Jesus
✅ Why Scripture—not self-help—is the foundation for real change
✅ How trials, pruning, and surrender prepare us better than productivity ever could
✅ The cultural lies in today’s news and self-help industry—and how to spot them

Have you been asking God for a breakthrough but feel like everything in your life is being stripped away?

Friend—it may not be punishment. It may be preparation.

In this video, I walk through 3 biblical signs that God is preparing you for something new:
1️⃣ Trials that test and strengthen your faith (1 Peter 1, James 1)
2️⃣ Pruning that feels like loss but leads to fruit (John 15)
3️⃣ Repentance that clears the way for renewal (Joshua 3, Malachi 3)

You’ll leave encouraged, with the clarity to see your hard season differently—and maybe even recognize it as God’s setup for your next chapter.

In today’s deeply personal episode of The Thought Vault Podcast, I share why I took a break from content—and why the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk prompted me to return. This isn’t a political rant. It’s a heartfelt conversation on grief, faith, division, boldness, and what it means to stand for Christ in a culture that’s growing increasingly hostile to truth.

We talk about the danger of watered-down theology, how the Church is responding, and what the Bible teaches us about courage, obedience, and grief. Whether you’re confused, heartbroken, or just trying to process the world right now—this is for you.

This episode is a heart-to-heart packed with wisdom, theology, and real talk from the other side of the “busy, burnout, and barely-holding-it-together” years.

I’ll take you behind the curtain of what I thought I needed to do to live a meaningful life—and what God gently showed me instead:
🕊️ That slow doesn’t mean stuck.
📖 That motherhood is holy ground.
💛 That marriage isn’t a project—it’s a practice.
🧠 And that faith isn’t a mountaintop—it’s often the quiet obedience in the in-between.

I’ll walk you through the lessons I’d go back and teach myself about:
✔️ Raising kids with peace instead of pressure
✔️ Loving your spouse with grace before correction
✔️ Living from identity in Christ, not productivity
✔️ Reordering your days with vision and truth
✔️ Trusting God’s timing, even when it’s slower than expected

Whether you're just starting out or resetting mid-journey, this video is for the woman who’s ready to trade the race for realignment—and rebuild her life with intention, endurance, and deep trust in God.

You’re not behind.
But you do need to shift this one belief if you’re serious about stepping into the life God’s calling you to.

In this episode, I’m exposing the inner lies that keep Christian women stuck—spinning in shame, waiting for clarity, and wondering if they missed their window. Using biblical wisdom (Ecclesiastes 3, Proverbs 4, James 2) and neuroscience-backed insight on identity and neuroplasticity, I’ll show you exactly how to rewire your thoughts and get back into faith-led motion.

You’ll walk away knowing:

✅ Why “feeling behind” is a trap from culture—not Christ
✅ 3 lies you must reject if you want breakthrough
✅ How Scripture + science confirm the power of small steps
✅ Why motion builds belief—and not the other way around

📖 Featuring wisdom from the lives of Moses, Sarah, Noah, and Paul—this isn’t just mindset coaching. It’s truth-based transformation.

I delve into the profound paradox of God's infinite majesty and His intimate nearness. By drawing inspiration from Saint Nicholas Cabasilas, I explore how these seemingly contrasting aspects of God transform our faith and daily lives.

This episode offers a deep dive into understanding God as both a distant, holy omnipotent being and a close, loving companion. Join me as we uncover the mystery of God's nature and how it impacts our relationships, struggles, and joys.

Key Takeaways:

  • God's Closeness and Love (00:01:34):
  • Discover how God is more affectionate than any friend and more loving than any father – closer to us than our own limbs.
  • Embracing the Divine Paradox (00:03:11):
  • Learn about the beautiful tension of experiencing God's vastness and intimate presence simultaneously.
  • God as the Destination and the Companion (00:04:20):
  • Understand how God is both our ultimate goal and our ever-present guide, accompanying us through every step of life’s journey.
  • Reflect and Invite God In (00:06:41):
  • Take a moment to reflect on where you feel God's nearness and where He feels distant, and learn how a simple acknowledgment can shift your perspective.

Today, it’s easy to be part of this world and still claim you faith. It’s something that many people do, and we’ve carved out ways for believers to live for this world and claim they are God’s too. How? well we’ve politicized religion and have made it a character issue to stand up for the values we believe.

When our character is attacked, people can’t accept that. Their ego won’t allow them to. We’ve been able to allow our hearts to be filled with the presuppositions of the world, while claiming to stand for God because we are “good people”. We have to get in to this…here we go!

We can become modern monks and be transformed forever from the inside out to live full and robust lives. The word monastery, or monk, comes from the word ‘mono’ which means singular. We are to have one focus, one singular thought, and that is to know, seek, and have God involved in our lives. We’re not going to become monks that are isolated in order to escape the world, but modern monks who are reshaped, recreated, and ready to help change our world. Being a modern monk is about finding rhythms of grace in the ways and practices of Jesus.

Today’s title may seem a little bit sassy, and I intended it to be, haha! What does it mean to stay in your own lane, and how does it impact us?

This conversation could be a continuation of sorts to the previous Episode 31: The Burden to Better with Heather Creekmore.

And I wanted to continue it a bit because I see the pervasiveness of comparison and striving in our culture that sets us up to be routinely discontent, disenchanted, and morose with daily life.

For many of us, we are walking out our lives in many different roles with many responsibilities. We have never been more connected to others in history than we are now, but there has been this rise of needing authenticity due to the ego-driven, self-serving nature with which most people share across the web.

Connection is priceless, community is the heartbeat of our purpose here on Earth. Jesus tells us to go into all the nations and make disciples. We are created to connect, and share. BUT, there is a key piece that has been eroded away in culture today.

And that piece has been the holy nature of Christ.

Why do we share things with people? Most times, it's because we need something, or we need to align ourselves with an expectation we have of ourselves OR that we are trying to meet with the outside world.

Staying in my own lane has really meant being focused on running my own race with Christ. I don’t have to run against what someone else is doing, or what someone else is convicted by… I simply must show up daily to serve Christ in the circumstance I am currently facing..in my OWN LANE.

I am meant to serve the convictions of my OWN HEART. I am meant to observe what is before me in order to better serve what is around me.

We dive into this and more in this episode! Tune in!

Finding joy is a concept I have marveled at for 3 important reasons - 1) is because I often ponder "can joy really be found?" 2) because I love learning and researching personal development and 3) Well, joy can sometimes be elusive to me.

A main component that makes joy in our lives more elusive is most of us on a daily basis or even on a moment by moment basis aren’t living in the present.

In this episode, we dive into the power our thinking has over our joy and step by step ways we can learn to be more joyful each and every day.

As a believer in Christ , we are given LIFE and freedom to live it abundantly in Christ. We can live IN JOY by mandating our brains to feel that way.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits." Proverbs 18:21

Do not underestimate the power that your words and thoughts have over your life. Finding joy is possible just by speaking it into existence thru your faith in Christ.

Establishing a rhythm is something that TRULY brings so much joy to your everyday! You don’t have to plan every detail, or live by a precise schedule, but working into your days standing activities will ensure that you are being intentional with your life. And when we can be intentional, it creates margin to incorporate the life-giving elements that fill us up, and push us to grow!

Listen in to hear the 4 things I do daily that bring joy into my life without much effort.

We have to be able to see where God wants us to go, and not be pigeon-holed into what we want for ourselves. God has a calling for your life, and His plans are the best plans. This is a point I’ve struggled with strongly, which I talk about in this episode.

It’s easy to compare ourselves, marriage, lifestyle, home, finances, family against what other’s have. And it is the THIEF OF JOY!

Do not be consumed with what others say is important, successful, or meaningful >>> they are living THEIR life, and you are living YOUR’S!

This episode ended with a wonderful love and kindness meditative prayer, listen in to get some rest and focus on feeling love and kindness over yourself and those you love. .

You can also listen to the meditations any time by going to boldpearls.com/meditations to listen!

False beliefs are stopping you from living life to your fullest.

This week, I want to dig deeper into false beliefs that are attached to our personalities. Some of you may relate to all or some of them, and once we learn this about our mindset, we can learn to do something about it!

So often, we are left thinking that life is too much, not enough, or plainly in the middle. So let’s jump into what God has taught us about WHO we are and where this knowledge can take us.

This podcast is organized by focusing on four false beliefs we tend to struggle with as Christians. I am paraphrasing these from the book, “The Search for Significance” by Robert McGee. I LOVE this book and there are so many takeaways. I know this conversation will give you light-bulbs like it did for me.

We are celebrating ***The Thought Vault Podcast's FIRST YEAR BIRTHDAY!

In this series we are sharing "The Best Of" in preparation for new episodes coming soon! This is a great time to catch up on crowd favorites!***We all hear that forgiveness is healing. That we heal ourselves from forgiving others and that it’s a gift when forgiveness is offered to us. From a biblical sense, this is precisely what we are taught as Christians; we should forgive the same way Christ forgave us. I do believe that healing comes from forgiveness, but there is a real struggle in the midst of this action. Sometimes we can't forget.

Sometimes, forgiveness doesn’t seem fair or warranted. The process of forgiveness can be arduous and painful or easy and light. There’s a lot that is involved in forgiveness, and your faith in Christ will play a HUGE role in it. This is what we’re going to talk about today, the mess of forgiveness.

Forgiveness broke my family and in this episode, I dive into that hurt, & how we’ve learned to cope with this circumstance that has forever shaped each of us.

Forgiving oneself can sometimes feel impossible, and can be the hardest to give. Shame, and guilt can destroy anyone. Forgiving ourselves, is taking care of ourselves in a way that helps us for our present and for our future. But The Enemy will make our minds turn against who we are, and who we know we are in Christ. It’s easy to go dark, and can be very hard to stay in the light. But that’s where forgiveness takes us, back to the light. Back to Christ.

Dr Caroline Leaf cited in her book, Think Learn Succeed that Scientific research shows that forgiveness and love are good for your mind, brain, and body health! Ongoing results of the “Forgiveness Study” carried out by researchers at the University of Wisconsin found that people who develop an ability to forgive have greater control over their emotions; are significantly less angry, upset, and hurt; and are much healthier. It’s easier to move forward into a purposeful future when you have truly forgiven.

Forgiveness = freedom. Think about that for a moment. What does that mean for you?

With this episode, it seemed fitting to end with an exercise that I learned from Professor Ronald Siegal, of Harvard Medical School, to help handle the emotions and feelings of forgiveness and hurts.

Let’s give this exercise aptly called the Soften Soothe, Allow Method, listen to this episode to practice this highly effective exercise that will give you the mindset to walk through deep hurts, and quite possibly get you to the point of forgiveness.

Forgiveness is something we all must face in life, and the choice to forgive can radically change the rest of our lives, and if we aren’t intentional, it can dictate the health of our bodies and heart. How do you want to live? Sometimes, forgiveness is the one thing holding us back. And isn’t it wonderful that Jesus didn’t hold it back from us?

Thank you for listening to this episode. Don’t forget to subscribe, and leave a review, and share this episode > it means so much!

Anytime you want to listen to the meditative prayers or exercises from our episodes, go to boldpearls.com/meditations to get a link to all of them! They’re free of course!

WE ARE CELEBRATING ONE YEAR of THE THOUGHT VAULT!Currently, we are enjoying a "Best of " series to celebrate crowd favorites from this past year in preparation for new episodes coming soon!

In the previous episode, we talked about the Power of our Brains, and touched on one tool in particular that has been scientifically proven to help us be more present in our everyday moments > and that is meditative prayer, and in a simple phrase > practicing mindfulness. Today’s episode we are diving deep into this!

I get pretty vulnerable and discuss in this episode the struggles I’ve been challenged with since I was in elementary school. It has been very arduous and exhausting journey, and something I struggle with still from time to time.

Let's start with the basics first of what meditative prayer is…

Meditation: is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

Prayer: can be defined as talking to God, but it is much more than that. Prayer is an act of worship that glorifies God and reinforces our need for Him. Through living a life of prayer, we respond to Christ's work of salvation and communicate with the very source of and purpose for our existence

So in essence meditative prayer (or as some refer to it, Christian Meditation) is a form of prayer in which a structured attempt is made to become aware of and reflect upon the revelations of God / Christ as your saviour.

It’s simply about deeply focusing on God’s presence and His word. Taking a purposeful moment to focus solely on your relationship with Christ, by emptying your mind of the world and totally filling your mind with His presence and peace.

During my research, I was able to devour so many Christian resources on meditative prayer. Listen in to the episode to hear more insight on this.

Meditation has been proven to relieve stress, help with many physical ailments, and when we are focusing on prayer, we are strengthening and connecting with Christ.

“You do not have a spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

The main points of meditation are

1- relaxation

2-intent

3- refocus on Christ

I share in the episode how I used meditative prayer during our miscarriage. And how I dealt with that difficult time.

Maybe you’ve abandoned a precious dream. Buried it under shame brought on by others’ judgment about it's worthiness or feel your dream just “isn’t in the cards” for you.

And even more, we sometimes have dreams that aren’t even ours and are simply copied from others (ehemmm, go listen to last week’s episode). We can find ourselves chasing something we don’t even really want or fits who we are.

Your dream either lives in the dark OR you’ve stopped considering it at all OR you aren’t even sure what it is.

What if your dream isn’t typical or traditional? That doesn’t mean it’s stupid. What if God gave you that dream so He can magnify His glory? What if He always had huge plans for that dream? Even if you can’t see His purpose in it yet.

It’s hard to dream when it seems that there is nothing lining up towards it taking place. But God doesn’t place in our hearts something we are passionate about for no reason!

Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

JEREMIAH 29:12-13

Tune in to this episode of The Thought Vault and listen to how dreams keep us hopeful, give us joy, and align us to what God created each of us to do. Re-discovering my dreams was a life-line to living in His grace and provision.

Now, I know the joy that comes with grabbing hold of His promised hope and future for me. The joy from trusting His vision for my life over others’ expectations and my own. And you know what? With prayer and faith in God, I’ll never bury my dreams again.

Will you?

Tune in!

Welcome to the Thought Vault! Today, I have a special guest with me, Rachel Baker. She is a Writer, Pastor's Wife, Mama, and Women's Ministry Director.

I invited Rachel to the show because she had an article published that struck a chord with me about Biblical Literacy and the importance it should be to us as believers.

I personally have been on my own journey discovering more about Bible history, and theology. It has become GLARINGLY obvious how imperative learning to understand the Bible on my own has on my daily life with Jesus.

In this corner of the web, I am focused on helping us all improve our lives physically, mentally, and SPIRITUALLY! To have a well rounded life, we have to focus on our relationships with Christ and have intentional habits that push the relationships deeper. Knowing what our Bible says and the literal context behind each verse makes the Bible really come alive and make more connections.

In this episode we talk about:

1- How a theological view of the Bible can deepen and transform your life

2- Knowing what the Bible doesn’t say is just as important

3- Best practices for getting started with Biblical Literacy

This conversation is encouraging and offers great insight on steps for improving our relationship with Christ and how Biblical literacy makes a difference in our lives. When we are deepening our relationship with Christ, we are improving the overall flow of our mindset and intention for living life DAILY! This is something that shouldn’t be overlooked and makes a huge impact on living a life for Christ!

HEATHER CREEKMORE is a podcaster, author and speaker. Her first book Compared to Who? encourages women to uncover the spiritual root of body image issues and find freedom.

Her new book, The Burden of Better, offers women a journey into the depths of God's grace to find a way off the treadmill of constant comparison. Heather has been featured on Fox News, Huff Post, Morning Dose, Church Leaders, For Every Mom, along with dozens of other shows and podcasts. But she's best recognized from her appearance as a contestant on the Netflix hit show, Nailed It. Heather and her fighter-pilot-turned-pastor husband, Eric have four children and live in Austin, Texas.

I love the subtitle of The Burden to Better, which is “ How a Comparison Free Life Leads to Joy, Peace, and Rest”

Some of the questions Heather and I tackled in this episode:

  • What daily tips do you utilize to help buffer the tendency to compare (hello, social media, haha)
  • How does comparison que us to the areas we may need to rely on God more?
  • In what ways have changing your habit of comparison improved your relationships?
  • Talk on how comparison can spiral into real mental and even physical health challenges by igniting for example, obsessive thinking and critiquing ourselves in unhealthy ways which changes how we feel, think, and respond to our circumstances.

This conversation was so insightful and needed in this time. There is true rest found in living comparison-free! Please be sure to checkout Heather on instagram and on her website. Be sure to grab her book too!

Today, we are going to talk about numbing out. Are you numbing out? Are you stuffing, repressing, ignoring things going on so that you can just get through your day? I get it. Let’s talk about it!

I’ve found that there are three indicators that you may be numbing out, let’s talk about them

1 Are you losing it over little things?

2 Are you stuck in “doing” not “being”?

3 In general, do you just have less joy?

What does numbing out cost us?!

A LOT! We lose time first of all!

Living numbed out, costs us our relationships and keeps us from presently living what we all know in our hearts matters most.

When we replace our real lives with false pleasures, the things that numb us out…we aren’t really living.

To fix numbing out...

We have to FIRST, take responsibility.

And second, ACCEPT where you are it.

How are we intentionally living each day to push the needle forward and move towards what we were uniquely made to do? If you want to see change in your life, you have to start with what is going on in your mind.

In this episode of The Thought Vault Podcast, I interview Parenting Coach, Laura Lynn. We talk about the current climate we are all living through and how to manage our relationships healthfully with our kids. It's an easy conversation that dives into the daily actions we can do to keep our parenting in a positive mindset.

  • Topic 1 : best practices for setting healthy boundaries for routines to encompass the demands of work, school, and social life.

  • Topic 2: how to manage expectations

  • Topic 3: how our mindset daily impacts our ability to relate, connect, and teach our children through adverse times

There is nothing that we can do to prepare ourselves for parenthood. We can have ideals, but we can’t predict what we will walk through. This isn’t going to be an episode about “how to be a parent” but rather, cultivating a healthy mindset around it.

Parenting, in my opinion is one of, if not THE MOST important responsibility for the kingdom of God there is. The miracle of life is something that cannot be missed. The shear feat of a baby making it through birth is a miraculous blessing. Life is very fragile.

We all enter adulthood with a variety of wounds from our childhood. For some of us, the wounds may be minor, like a parent’s voice that was raised too loudly, or a glance or comment that made us feel less than.

These we can often recognize and learn how to move past and heal from them. On the other hand, some wounds may be deeply traumatic, maybe even hard to ever face. These often require much more time, possibly professional help, and extended healing time to recover from.

But regardless of the wounds, the desire for us to work toward healing those wounds, and not instilling the same wounds on our own children is honorable and necessary.

In the last episode of the podcast, Why You May Be Stuck and Complacent, I implore us all to keep our actual purpose at the forefront of all we do. That purpose can be found in Mark 12:28–31

We are first called to love God with all our mind, body, and soul. Second, we must love our neighbors as ourselves.

This is the guide for how to love and care for our children. We can’t love our Children well, if we aren’t loving ourselves well.

Insert mind blown emoji.

This is important to recognize because it goes back to what I refer to in the beginning. In order to show up well for our kids, we have to repair the areas of ourselves that are hard parts.

It’s so easy to overcomplicate what it takes to provide for our children, from the environment of our homes, to the activities we engage them in, to the things we give them. The truth is that they just need to know us, and know that we love them.

When we are purposeful about creating a home and example of God’s love, we gain so much clarity on what has a place in our lives, what doesn’t, and what wounds in ourselves we must take time to work on.

Parenting is a relationship, we aren’t Moses giving a list of commandments and setting our kids loose in the promised land, we are walking hand in hand with our children as the Holy Spirit walks with us.

And just as God loved Moses when he was leading God’s people through His doubts, we must understand that God is helping us through our’s too.

We have to stay humble. “First pride, then the crash—the bigger the ego, the harder the fall” (Proverbs 16:18 MSG). We must recognize our need DAILY for Christ to lead us, and know when we must forgive others and ourselves.

Don’t try to be a perfect parent. Try to be a present parent that is quick to ask for forgiveness and learns from mistakes. It’s a wild ride that is Christ appointed for you with your child. If your journey feels overwhelming right now, know that you’re normal! If you don’t have things figured out, welcome to the club! You’re in the right place.

Why You May Be Stuck and Complacent

In this episode we are talking about being stuck and complacent in life.

We often believe that by going through the motions of attending church, and saying all the rhetorical things keeps us connected. But honestly, it’s about our hearts. Our relationships with Christ can’t be curated. It has to be felt.

We are often stuck because we are battling our flesh. We question what is happening in our lives, and what purpose we have here. In this episode we dig deep into these questions.

Living with PTSD and/or trauma is a DAILY walk. On this episode of The Thought Vault Podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with author Kim Lengling about her journey of walking through life with PTSD and learning how to choose daily to battle the trauma that has been part of her journey.
With Christ, trauma and PTSD can be something that deepens your relationship with God and your understanding of Him.While we can't always control what our circumstances are or why situations become part of our story, we CAN control how we live our lives afterwards. This journey is NOT easy, but there is hope in the brokenness that is sometimes woven into our stories on this side of Heaven.

It's okay to NOT be okay.If there is one thing I've learned, it's that there is no rulebook for dealing with our lives in a uniform manner. We have to be okay with not being okay. The only comfort sometimes is knowing that God IS PRESENT, and He is understanding of all the hurt we may feel.

We serve a relatable God. Unlike most other religions, we are invited into a personal relationship with our creator. We won't always have the answers we think we need, and that's a place for our relationship with God to provide.
When facing trauma, we may seek out the answer to the question of "why?" and it can be overwhelming and all encompassing. In this episode, we discuss this difficult aspect of trauma.
If you are walking through life with trauma and/or PTSD, this episode may offer some comfort. If you found this episode helpful, you may really like this episode all about sabotaging thoughts and how to deal with them. Tune in here.

Many of us are overburdened with information today. Constantly bombarded with anything and everything going on around us. How will we be able to truly live our lives if we are stuck consuming and muddling through the emotions and thoughts of other things? Today’s episode is all about anxiety, a topic close to my heart, my hope is this will help you!

As someone who deals with anxiety, and has for most of my life. I’ve had to learn to cope with my reality, the false reality that begins to form, and the reality I desire. In my experience, anxiety begins to take hold when I am living in a false reality. What do I mean by this?

I really mean, my thoughts. Our thoughts can create the reality we are living in whether or not it is true. Our thoughts allow our mind to respond to something as if it is actually taking place.

Anxiety is REAL, but it can be manufactured by ourselves. Armed with this knowledge, we can begin to alter and shift our thoughts to counter the approach of a triggering activity.

What are triggering activities? These are different for everyone. Our brain has been trained to respond to different situations in different manners. Therefore, we have to be conscious enough to understand how we feel and WHY we feel that way.

Anxiety is a secondary emotion, meaning it is a reactionary emotion stemmed from something primary

We dive into FIVE ways to redirect anxiety and manage it well…

Let’s talk about how we can help calm our anxiety:

1 - Learn to be patient.

2 - Recognize your triggers

3 - Take Care of Yourself Physically

4 - Be Mindful of What You Are Thinking About

5 - Give Yourself Grace

Anxiety is not something that has to dictate our lives. Our minds are capable of managing, and Christ can bear all our burdens. Don’t forget what the Word says in Philippians present ALL concerns to Christ. No matter how out of sight they may seem.

We dive into a story of Paul in Corinthians that sums up how I tend to frame my sessions of depression in a way that gives me TRUTH perspective.

Sometimes, the best we can do is lean into the resources we have in our lives. Be that people like counselors, pastors, or loved ones. Giving ourselves boundaries, taking care of ourselves physically, praying and learning patience.

If you are walking through the valley of anxiety right now, there is a way out, and I pray you find it. But in the meantime, don’t miss what God may have for you right where you are.

In this episode of The Thought Vault you are going to hear from Christian author Elizabeth Laing Thompson. We discuss her newest book, All The Feels. Emotional Health is an imperative topic for overall wellness because the results in our lives stem from our reaction to our thoughts and emotions. Therefore, what we think and feel are true dictators to our life perspective and the trajectory of what we are doing. This interview is FIRE, you’re going to have GREAT insight and takeaways from it.

Highlights of the conversation::

  1. You describe three different kinds of feelers: big feelers, steady feelers, and reluctant feelers. Can you briefly explain these feeling types? What are their strengths and weaknesses?
  2. Are we allowed to express our real feelings to God in prayer—even when they aren’t “righteous”?
  3. One thing I love talking about is our ability, God-given, to radically change how we live because of the power of Christ and him dwelling within us and the power of our mindset. I know you speak to this in the book about focusing our thoughts, can you speak on that?
  4. You write about trying to build a “happy house”—a home with a positive and open atmosphere where people are comfortable expressing their feelings in healthy ways. What are your best tips on how to create that kind of environment at home?
  5. In the book, you talk in chapter 4 about the need for us ( I’m paraphrasing) to recognize how to sit with emotions, process, and then tell them to leave. Can you speak to that, and share How the Bible can help us with painful feelings like anxiety, depression, and grief?
  6. Many people, especially big feelers, struggle with borrowing other people’s burdens. What are some practical ways to develop emotional boundaries? What piece of advice would you give to someone at the very beginning of that journey?
  7. How can a better understanding of our emotions help us to have a more meaningful prayer life? Have richer relationships? Become the people God designed us to be?

The message of Elizabeth’s book, All the Feels, is very dear to me because I believe in the power of knowing ourselves more, and when it comes to thoughts and feelings, we need to have a deeper understanding of how they intertwine so that we can deepen our relationship with Christ, others, and ourselves.

Have you ever had a goal in mind, or been in a situation where your own self-talk or inner dialogue stops you in your tracks? Me too! So in this episode, we are discussing sabotaging thoughts.

We often overlook the power we have over ourselves. We can single-handedly ruin a relationship, quit working towards a goal, and stay stuck in negative headspace.

Most of the time this is prevalent when we aren’t realizing the strength we have in Christ to carry our burdens and release us from our own mental anguish. Christ is not going to tell us to suffer alone. And, He certainly doesn’t tell us we don’t have what it takes, or that we are too dumb, too weak, too silly, too poor, too ugly to do anything.

Throughout scripture we are given words, testimonies, and stories of how capable we are, how loved we are, how strong we are because He dwells WITHIN US!

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28.

Recognizing that we are more than our feelings and thoughts will keep us rooted in ACTION and not INACTION.

The biggest way to stop the sabotaging thoughts is to DO IT ANYWAY > go against what your mind is trying to tell you.

In season 1, We had an episode about motivation. Honestly, one of my most favorite episodes because it sheds so much light on how we live our daily lives and get caught in the traps of our own making. Be sure to go and listen to episode19 to catch that.

We have the free will to think and act according to who CHRIST says we are, not our flesh or other fallen people.

What thoughts are you going to change?

Welcome to The Thought Vault! In this episode we are going to tackle the topic of difficulty. We all know that life isn’t easy. It doesn’t always turn out the way we want, and sometimes life is so hard that we question our faith or how we can make it through.

Pain and grief, jealousy and bitterness, vengeance and anger are all part of the human condition. As a Christian, sometimes we can believe that we shouldn’t have these feelings. But in the Bible, emotions are part of the story. All of these emotions are the reason for Jesus coming to save us. Our emotions are the precipice of all our actions, and so living in a fallen world with sinful characteristics...we fall to our flesh.

Our emotions cause us to stumble, develop pride, live in bitterness and resentment, live with a depressed attitude and the list goes on.

But we aren’t meant to stay subservient to our flesh or negative feelings

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

This is what we tackle in the first episode in Season Two of The Thought Vault!

Challenging our natural reactions and tendencies is an opportunity for growth, and that is what any form of difficulty offers. Lessons to be learned!

Today’s episode of The Thought Vault is about cynicism. I believe cynicism runs the world, and this perspective of life is robbing people of a life well-lived. You may have cynical people in your life or may be a cynic yourself. Either way, this episode is going to sting a little bit. But if we don’t challenge ourselves, what are we doing here? We gotta grow! So we’re jumping into this one.

You probably think that being cynical keeps you from getting hurt by other people and situations when they disappoint you by not living up to your expectations.

But cynicism is toxic. It robs you of happiness.

A cynical attitude hurts you in ways you’d probably never expect. On the whole, it affects your health, career, and relationships.

Cynicism cannot live where we don’t allow it to grow, and it fools us into believing we know best, when that isn’t true. Drawing near to Christ and relying on his wisdom to cover our deficiencies is a gift He gave to all of us.

Tune in to this episode and hear the 5 ways to stop cynicism and move away from that hurtful mental state.

In today’s episode we talk about MOTIVATION! I struggle with motivation. I overthink, and suffer (yes, suffer) from Perfectionism and these two things are HUGE motivational blocks. We all have dreams, and goals that we want to achieve no matter the scale, but do you keep finding yourself no further along year after year? Are you constantly resetting the “resolution” clock every New Years???

ME!! I’ve been there, so let’s dive into what motivation is and how we can get more of it!

What is motivation >> Motivation is the energy and/or reason to act or behave in a certain way.

The most powerful and domineering section of our brain is structured around our survival and is very impulsive, always looking for the easy way out. And you’ll always be prone to blindly follow its lead, until you understand why and how it works. And decide to do it differently

Our brains are composed of three main sections that function at three different levels & we dive into what each area is responsible for:

  • Low-level or Reptilian Brain
  • Mid-level, or Mammalian Brain (Limbic System)
  • High-level, or Human Brain (Neocortex)

Although these three sections are very distinct and do very different things, they do have a synergistic relationship and communicate between each other, holistically sharing responsibilities.

So why is it that we prefer pizza over salad or broccoli? Why do we resist doing that grueling workout? Or why do we spend countless hours on our mobile devices, or watching TV? Because our most powerful motivational and emotional drivers in our brain reside in our mid-level “mammalian” brain, our Limbic System. And our actions at this level are motivated by three deeply rooted survival instincts…

These three instincts have been coined the “Motivational Triad”, and it is crucial to learn and understand what they are and the effects they have on us, and what to do should we need to overcome their powerful habits.

Welcome to The Thought Vault! Last week, we talked about personality traits and the importance of spending time focusing on who we are and how God created us.

I know this conversation will give you lightbulbs like it did for me.

Embracing The Unknown

In today’s episode we are talking about the unknown, and how we can embrace it with confidence.

The story of Gideon is so interesting to me. As someone who over-analyzes and doesn’t want to lose control >> I identify with his journey. He questioned his ability and “tested” God’s choice of him to carry out a calling on his life.

I’ve been there before and I know I may be there again and again throughout my life. The truth is it can be hard to be confident in God’s provision and presence in our lives when we are overwhelmed with the reality of our situations, who we “think” we are, and how we “will be”. NOT having clarity on the truth of God, and who He says we are in His word will keep us from living a life that is confident in who God has created you to be, and the mission YOU were made to create.

Self doubt can be paralyzing, but we were not intended to live in doubt and struggle with the reality of God’s truth. When we find awareness in our daily lives, when we can truly have gratitude, God’s truth can and will prevail over our emotions.

An example of God's truth prevailing over our emotions is clear in the story of Gideon, God called Gideon to be a mighty warrior and free Israel. But Gideon was unsure. Gideon didn’t feel qualified or capable of rising to the occasion God was calling him to answer, and he had self doubts. You see he wasn’t fearful of serving God or following him, but he was in disbelief God chose him to wage war in His name.

Tune in to this episode to learn how God’s grace prevails, and when we rise to occasion of uncertainty, we are giving in to an adventure that could change everything

We've all heard the words subconscious, and conscious. I think most of us understand these words on the surface and understand they refer to the operation method of our minds.

But what do these terms really mean? And more importantly how can having a better understanding of the way our minds work help us capture our thoughts and rewrite our stories, which will in turn lead to a more joyful and fulfilling life.

This episode is going to be a fast dive into how you can open your mind and control your subconscious thoughts which will allow your conscious mind to take control and manifest REAL changes in your life.

I could expand on this for hours on end but in this episode I want to keep these concepts simple. And my hope is that you will have a good basis to start making changes now in your daily life for real results. Simply by learning how to control your subconscious thoughts and allow more conscious thoughts to run your day, you will be able to rewrite your story to live for a better future!

On this episode of The Thought Vault, we are going to talk about comfort. Comfort is not something that we think of as being a problem, but I think after this conversation you may think a bit otherwise.

Comfort is something we all understand. It’s our softest robe, our best fitting jeans, and our favorite coffee order from Starbucks. It’s the smell of your grandma’s house, the way your mom hugs you when she sees you. Your own bed after you’ve been away, and the way you feel in the car on a friday evening on your way home after a week of work. It’s usually equating to a whole lot of positives in our lives.

Comfort = good. Feeling good. Feeling peaceful.

Is there another side to comfort? I bet you can guess what I’m going to say >>> YES!

Comfort can also be the safety of bad habits for fear of doing something else, comfort is knowing that doing something different will disrupt the way things are, comfort is not having to expend energy to do something you’ve been thinking about, comfort is being settled, and not moving.

As it’s said in

2 Corinthians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

When we are aware of God’s presence in our lives, comfort means rest in Him. We are able to transform the way we live with others, and how we engage in the choices that we make. Even if we push ourselves and fail, it can be accepted as part of the process. We will also gain the gift of seeing God’s provision through those hard situations, and the benefits of that wisdom will serve us and others that we may be able to counsel and walk with them through something similar they may face.

Listen in to hear how comfort can CHANGE US!

In today’s episode of The Thought Vault, we are discussing Compassion Fatigue.

You may have heard of this, or not. OR ,you may know the reality of it without knowing the name. I feel like this topic is applicable to our current cultural environment and it may also be applicable to your personal struggles as well. The main focus of this show will be to help you recognize if you could be suffering from compassion fatigue and to offer you tools to help combat the fall out of this very prevalent emotional stress that when overwhelmed can seep into all our lives.

Compassion Fatigue in a clinical sense is defined as “ a condition characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion leading to a diminished ability to empathize or feel compassion for others, often described as the negative cost of caring. It is sometimes referred to as secondary traumatic stress“

This is something I can really identify with. Over the past year, from stresses in my personal life alone, I really began to feel my self "checking out ", then couple this with our current world environment, and I really began finding myself becoming unattached emotionally.

Tune in to this episode to learn all about this stress mechanism our bodies default to when when we are dealing with too much.

In this episode of The Thought Vault, we are tackling the topic of fear I’m excited to talk about this today because fear permeates all of our lives in more than one way. Often times you don’t even realize that it’s fear keeping things the way that they are and prohibiting us from shifting and changing and thinking differently to better ourselves, our circumstances, or any type of challenge that we are facing.

Fear is a BIG emotion, and it manifests itself in different ways. Pride, laziness, procrastination, avoidance, impulsivity, and the list goes on and on.

We dive into how we can combat fear, and move forward positively in order to live fuller, brighter lives!

Today’s episode we are diving into full body wellness, what does this include and what are ways we can connect all elements?

You’ve heard this before, but i'm bringing this topic to our episode today because we all need to think of our total wellness with these three components > mind, body, and soul.

We can focus on one, but when the other two are neglected, you will still be out of balance. I don’t believe any of us can be in perfect balance, BUT making efforts in all three areas daily will lead to a more well rounded life.

We aren’t able to truly feel positive and uninhibited when we do not prioritize our discipline of doing our best for our mind, body, and soul daily.

When I’m not praying everyday, I don’t feel connected to God and His presence in my life. Or if I’m eating crumby, I don't have energy or sleep well. And when I’m dealing with a stressful circumstance, I feel as though everything is going wrong in my life, it’s a weird snowball effect. And, it leaves me feeling depressed and anxious, making it hard to take care of myself physically and sometimes spiritually.

When we are trying to work on our lives, it's important to understand that we are going to ALWAYS be working. We won’t reach a pinnacle until we are with Jesus, and I’ve learned that LEARNING is VERY helpful in keeping our minds hopeful and living a more well-rounded life.

Tune in to this episode to learn what ways you can focus on these three areas to shift your daily life and living renewed in the joy of Christ!

In episode 5 we talked about mindfulness being a wonderful tool in helping relationships flourish. Mindfulness is the practice of being present. And we’ve learned about how our brains (thoughts) can truly influence the outcomes in our lives and nourish our relationships with others, and more importantly with ourselves. Shifting our awareness to thinking and feeling in tandem is a skill that will keep you mentally fit and more capable of responding in ways to help relationships strengthen, and also in ways that can keep your own emotions more balanced and peaceful.

This is what we are going to dive into in Today’s episode of The Thought Vault.

Relationships are the evidence of our lives if you think about it. Everything we do is in response to something else. Our relationships also have a profound effect on the quality of our lives. Learning how to master our relationships is a wonderful goal to have, and will impact our lives and others in a major way.

We are capable of having healthy relationships. Tune in to hear TWO KEY AREAS that we must be intentional about understanding to truly have strong, lasting, and HEALTHY relationships.

In today’s episode, we are going to explore a “thinking” model that I’ve learned to practice from one of my coaches. This thinking model is a tool that you can use and it will help address the root of the outcomes in your life and the way you are dealing or not dealing with results you’ve realized. This useful tool can also help you with helping you reach certain goals you may set for your life. It's truly changed the way I think and I think it can help you too…. so let’s get started!

We are all different in how we play our mental games, BUT we are all the same in that there is a sequence of events that plays out in all of us. And that’s what we are going to analyze right now.

You may have a relationship, or a work situation, maybe a physical goal, or a mental roadblock happening in an area of your life that you would like a different outcome or achievement and this model will help you get through the steps and make the changes you need to take to realize the outcome you truly desire.

This model is called CTFAR (in short) and is an abbreviation for:

Circumstances

Thoughts

Feelings

Actions

Results

Dive into this episode and learn the explanation, and how this corresponds to the flow of how we relate to life.

Phillipeans 4: 8-9

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you."

We have POWER over our brains, and when we learn its like any other muscle that needs to be trained, we can make changes in our lives that will help us reach personal goals or fix bad habits, because God has given us a new life and we can acknowledge the new life He has given us and live our lives more for His purpose. And by now you know one way to do that…...GET CONTROL OF YOUR THOUGHTS!

Regrets, we all have them right? I mean they are a human response to life and living. Regrets can play an intricate part of self reflection, learning lessons and even bettering one's life so to speak. But when regrets become a ruminating thought and play like a broken record in your mind, it is then that past regrets can become crippling because your focus on the past will begin to absorb the present time. And the thoughts of the "woulda, coulda, shouldas" will become a trap that's hard to escape. This steel trap can become so intense that it can negatively affect how we view ourselves and our lives in our "present" day. This is so sad to me, because this is the space we all need to avoid The past is gone ...and what you're doing today... right now...is really what matters and that's where your power is, it is in the present where changes can be made. The past can not be changed.

Regrets are part of life, none of us can live out our lives perfectly, only Christ did this. As humans it's virtually impossible to be perfect, and regrets are going to happen and we can not let our regrets take over our thoughts in the present.

In a study performed by Harvard psychologists Matthew A. Killingsworth and Daniel T. Gilbert, 2200 Subjects could choose from 22 general activities, such as walking, eating, shopping, and watching television. On average, respondents reported that their minds were wandering 46.9 percent of time, and no less than 30 percent of the time during every activity except making love.

What this study shows is that mind-wandering appears ubiquitous across the board and that our mental lives are pervaded, to a remarkable degree, by the NONPRESENT.

2 of my favorite verses to meditate on when I find myself fixating on the past.

Matthew 11: 28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light"

Phillipians 4:6

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

One of my other favorite verses that I use as a daily reminder for being present is this.

Psalm 118:24

"This is the day that the Lord has made we will rejoice and be glad in it."

We all hear that forgiveness is healing.

Episode 2 The Biggest Secret to Creating A Positive Mindset

In Episode one, we talked about the Power of our Brains, and touched on one tool in particular that has been scientifically proven to help us be more present in our everyday moments > and that is meditative prayer, and in a simple phrase > practicing mindfulness.

So basically Christian meditation is the process of deliberately focusing on specific thoughts (such as a bible passage) or an adoration and reflecting on the meaning in the context of the love of God

It’s simply about deeply focusing on God’s presence and His word. Taking a purposeful moment to focus solely on your relationship with Christ, by emptying your mind of the world and totally filling your mind with His presence and peace.

During my research, I was able to devour so many Christian resources on meditivate prayer. Listen in to the episode to hear more insight on this.

Bible references in this episode:

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭22:37‬ ‭

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭26:2‬

Psalm 119:15

Psalm 119:148

‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:16‬ ‭

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭26:3‬ ‭

Corinthians‬ ‭2:16‬

Meditation has been proven to relieve stress, help with many physical ailments, and when we are focusing on prayer, we are strengthening and connecting with Christ.

“You do not have a spirit of fear but of love, power, and a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

The main points of meditation are

1- relaxation

2-intent

3- refocus on Christ

So keeping these three steps in mind, you can focus your thoughts on what you’re dealing with. We are all living in uncertainty right now. Different areas of our lives aren’t balanced, and we are struggling to keep our thoughts renewed.

I share in the episode how I used meditative prayer during our miscarriage. And how I dealt with that difficult time.
