Today, the average life expectancy of an American is 76.4 years, and in 2023 over 70,000 Americans reached their 100th birthday. But in the Blue Zones, or regions of the world where people live exceptionally long lives, individuals are ten times more likely to live to 100. These places—specifically the Barbagia region of Sardinia, Italy, Okinawa, Japan, Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; and Icaria, Greece—are packed with centenarians. (Taken From Linked Article)

Don't get me wrong any activity is beneficial organized or not. But when kids come home after dance class and lay in bed and stare at their phone they don't understand that the dance class just wasn't enough. Our children need to understand the benefits of lifelong fitness and movement. Chores are movement, walking to and from school is movement, walking the dog is movement, yard work is movement, and a family walk would be a nice way to disconnect from technology. The problem is we don't have a cooperative bunch today, but rest assurd these couch potatoes will feel the health pinch as they get older. So, let's provide ways for our kids to move and stay healthy.

Well it’s good to have something to do every day for sure but more importantly it’s good to know what you are going to do, how you are going to do it and how long something will take. This is known as setting goals, and with every goal there are objectives. The objectives are the baby steps we take to reach our goalsevery day. We also have to figure out what we want to do and why we want to do it. That’s purpose. please stay with the podcast to the end as I share some activities for you to use as you practice Consistency.

We all like to be heard; and some of us like to be heard abit too much. We can have a tendency to inundate a conversation with our own interests and just love communicating to people how smart we are or how we solved some large scale problem at work. If you happen to be with someone when this is going on it can be sad to watch the expression on the listeners facewhen they are interrupted or when the speaker almost starts another conversation that is totally off the topic that was being discussed. Most people like to listen to respond. You can see it in their eyes and body posture. They discovered a link in a conversation and want to talk so bad that they are practically leaning into the speaker. Look, this is an easy one: belowI am going to explain the five types of listening. You decide which one you are and then make adjustments. The trick is be consistent and be a good listener.

No one has self control. Have you looked at the condition of society? 1 in 4 homes are in foreclosure. I guess we can blame the banks, or can we? Everybody wants something bigger andbetter. To get bigger and better the money has to be made to get it, unless the bank doesn’t care. But, in the final analysis the decision is made by the buyer. Teenage obesity, diabetes, addiction, alcoholism, is all evidence of the lack of self control in society. And oh, did I mention anger issues and the left over bitterness from childhood that gets carried into adulthood wreaking havoc on families. Society has lost control of its thoughts, its words, and its actions. Everybody knows. What produces a nation of people with self-control, consequences do. Unfortunately many people are sitting in that leaking boat right now and are experiencing the consequences of a lack of self control.

I made the mistake of having a couple of newspapers and other news outletsdeliverer headlines and breaking stories to my inbox daily. I must say I keep in touch with what is going on in the world. The problem is that 90% of it is so negative, sad and at times slanted based upon the political philosophy of the paper or cable network. At times I can get burned out from just reading and listening. Do yourself a favor and read or listen to something inspirational everyday. It beats the doom and gloom we listen to and watch in the news.

Let’s say you have a piece of wood, a nail, and a hammer. Pretend the wood is a person, and the nail is a nasty rumor about that person. If you hammer in the nail, you’re obviously hurting him or her. If you then pull out the nail…well, there’s still a hole inthe wood, and the damage has been done. Rumors and Gossip can cause us to make some really bad decisions and bad choices.

For some reason people believe they can multi task. Well guess what; they can’t. Brain research tells us that we can’t focus on more than one task at a time. Think I’m crazy? Well try singing Amazing Grace while the car in front of you is doing 20 miles an hour on a major highway. You see good and evil can’t occupy the same mind, at least not at the same time. All that really happens is we task switch, we just go from one task to another and think we are multi tasking. All that’s really happening is we are doing two tasks only half as well.

Whether we want to believe it or not, as adults, we are significant to others right now. It’s time to realize how much we mean to our children, our spouse, and other friends and family members. How much does it really mean to you to mean that much to anotherperson? It doesn’t matter what you have said or done in the past; a life can be changed with the right words at the right time. Often, we allow our past to dictate how we are going to treat others; don’t let it. Start writing those letters now and do it consistently.

It is important however to do one thing every day, and ifeverybody does one thing a lot will get accomplished. I am not talking about large scale projects I am referring to daily things that need attention. As an example I empty the dishwasher every morning. I know my wife appreciates it, so when she wakes up the kitchen is clean and ready to use. It’s not doing the task; it’s doing it and adopting the task as your own. The issue arises with children when we don’t assign them a task and they don’t adopt anything as their own. They never seem to pay attention to detail and how to get things done effectively and efficiently. Listen in as Jim detaisl in chapter 5 of The Power Of Consistency why this doing just one thing is so important.

Let me share an interesting workout with you: Micro Workouts. To be very honest up until recently I never heard of this before. Basically it’s doing 5-10 minutes of exercise throughout the day. Oh, you can do a more general workout say for 30-45 minutes for sure. But often after theselong workouts we tend to revel in the fact that our workout is done for the day and rest on our laurels. My 5 minutes in the morning starts with a short stretch and then 50 air squats and 20 pushups off of the back of the footboard of my bed. Research supports the fact that these 5-10 minutes of exercise throughout the day lowers blood sugar and helps fight against obesity. I wouldsay from my experience that it does. Now the trick just do it consistently.

Exercise and diet go together. Jack LaLanne the late fitness guru from the 50’s and 60’s once said thatstaying healthy is 90% diet and 10% exercise if you want to remain healthy. Wecan’t exercise to eat more or reward ourselves with food after exercise. The truth is we can’t out train a bad diet.

From a parents perspective it is critical to deal with their child using rules and regualtions and compassion and understanding.
From an adult child's perspective the same needs to be accomplished with our parents and visa versa.
From the schools perspective at times parents have to be managed like one of the kids.
From all perspectives everyone needs to ge consistently fit.
The young parents of today need parenting. Parents who have left home as young adults with a rebellious attitude may not even be speaking with their own parents. They have lost their perception of right and wrong behaviors and sometimes even simple decisions are tough. It’s these parents that will try to bully you as the teacher and the school. They don’t have the ability to cooperate when they disagree and can wreak havoc on the school and your classroom. These parents need to be agreed with immediately. You heard right; agreed with. But, agree in principal, not with the content. Let them know that you can see things from their perspective, but work with them to see things from the same perspective. Instead of a tug of war, move to their side of the rope. Or better yet, let go of the rope. Ease into conversations with these parents and begin to lose your fear of being yelled at. Be an empathic listener, and don’t argue. They need to be taught, and you are going to do it. Read More...

The superintendent of the New Jersey school district where a 14-year-old freshman died by suicide 48 hours after video of bullying surfaced online has resigned, a day after funeral services were held for teenager.
Adriana Kuch was found dead a week from Friday following a premeditated bullying incident in which four school mates allegedly ganged up to either attack the high schooler or record the incident, which was subsequently posted to social media.
All four girls involved in the attack on Kuch, who took her own life two days after the Feb. 1 incident at Central Regional High School in Berkeley Township, had already been suspended indefinitely before they were charged Friday in the hallway attack at the school. Please read the links for more information on the brutal attack. Students are protesting and retired teachers have said that this has been going on for years in this district. Everything just got kicked under the rug.

The Spiritual Dimension Of Life
Proverbs 30: 17 KJV
"The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it."
What does this mean in very practical terms? If an individual grows up in life with a mocking and contemptible attitude toward their father and despises to obey their mother they will lose their perception on right and wrong behaviors and even the smallest decisions that need to be made will create confusion in their life. Our relationships with our parents can determine future success for ourselves and as we mature for our families. Honor Your Father and Your Mother is the first commandment that has a blessing attached to it: “That you will live a long full life.” NLT. As we mature the imprint from our upbringing can affect the relationship that should mean the most to us; the one with our parents. When we mock our father and despise our mother we lose our perception on life and may miss many of the blessings that God has for us. Take advantage of the FREE journal linked below.

Bullying has become epidemic in our schools, and no matter how you slice it, this behavior has gotten out of hand. Teachers, administrators, and parents are all looking to something that will just make the problem go away. There is not one program or intervention that will stop bullying. It takes a concerted effort of teachers, administrators, parents, and students to help create a climate of respect and responsibility. The Anti Bullying 101 podcast has been providing tips and strategies to teachers, parents, and students for the past 5 years and I would like to take the podcast to another level. This would require me to invest more time in its production and promotion. I can’t do this without your help. I ask that you please hit the support button now and become a listener supporter of this podcast. By doing so you will be helping to spread the word about the dangers of bullying and helping victims develop hope and greater resiliency. Thanks for your help and for being such a loyal listener.

Often we don't consider how important we are to our family and at times our friends. Whether we want to believe it or not we are the goose that lays the golden eggs. We can't become so anxious and impatient for all the eggs that we kill the goose in the process. We need to care for ourselves and help our family care for one another. We also need to teach our children some lifelong skills that will help them manage the stressors of life, manage relationships and develop resiliency as the deal with bullying behavior in their lives. Listen in as Jim shares some ideas on how to care fore the goose.

It never ceases to amaze me how we can believe that an actor/actress on a commercial is really the character he or she portrayed on a sitcom. I was watching TV some years ago and Roseanne Barr was doing a commercial on Retro-TV talking about the importance of having dinner at the “family table.” So the commercial flashed back to her and John Goodman on a Roseanne episode sitting at the dinner table engaged in an argument which was supposed to be funny to the viewer. The point of the commercial was that it doesn’t matter what goes on at the family table as long as you have one. I disagree especially during the holiday season. As a kid, we had a family table. It was a war zone. I’m sure that many people can relate to my family table, and I am sick of calling it that, too. (What is this new term –family table- anyway?) During the holidays we can find ourselves surrounded by people we don't like and kids who are discourteous and disrespectful.
The holiday table is not the time or the place to deal with issues that are to raw to discuss. We need to spend the time nurturing relationships with our friends and those of our extended family over the course of years so when the time comes to break bread we can do so in a loving and kind way. Please take the time to become a listener supporter and help take Anti Bullying 101 to another level. Just click on the link below.

My daughter who is twelve participates in a variety of different sports, and activities. She is attending middle school right now and is involved with cheerleading both at the school and community level. What never ceases to amaze me is that every sport hands every participant a book on sportsmanship. In other words how should we treat members of the other team and our fellow teammates? What is even more interesting is that you get the feeling that the behaviors like respect, and responsibility, kindness, caring, and other character qualities are only deemed important when the individual is on public display because they don’t want to make the team look bad. As an example one handbook reads:
All students who represent ___________ School on an athletic team are expected to conduct themselves in such a manner as to reflect credit upon ________School.
I think what is a concern here are the words; on an athletic team. Suppose you are not on an athletic team? Student’s need to work on reflecting credit upon themselves, that will in tern help credit the school for contributing to the student’s life. Listen in as Jim explains why sportsmanship should be a way of life and not something that is ceremoniously displayed on a field or a court.

Yes that is me in the picture. Probably eight years old or so. Husky for sure. How did I know? Because everyone told me so. Listen in and read the articles associated with this episode.
Oh yeah, I was an overweight little boy. So much so, that when my mother took me to buy clothes I went to what I thought was a special clothing store for boys like me, fat. Why did I think this? Because when I walked into the store, the opened tie, crossed arm, wrinkled shirt, cigarette smoking salesman, took one look at me from head to toe, looked at my mother, pointed to the back of the store and said, “Husky.” Gee did I feel special, until I discovered that the store I was in was one of the only stores around that sold clothes for fat kids. Sure, I said it, for fat kids, because that’s how I felt like a fat kid, and that’s how I was treated. Special stores for special kids who were fat. My skinny friends bought clothes from all kinds of stores; I was relegated to one store, and one style. I certainly was not one of the cool kids, and at times felt isolated and excluded.
You would think adults would know better and after all these years learned that stigmatizing young kids because of size, shape or weight does nothing but impact a child's self concept and esteem. Not so fast, it's still going on. Listen in and discover why one NJ school district is being sued because of the insensitivity of a football coach. I am including a link to the article below.

As a kid the dream was to become a professional baseball player and do it for a living. I am sure that kids today have those same dreams and can see themselves hitting the homerun that wins the World Series or pitching a no-hitter. It was such a fantasy fest and we all did fantasize, but alas none of us made it. We played in and out of uniform, organized and pick up, honed our skills, took batting practice and we all thought we were so darn good, but not good enough. There were some guys in the town that I lived in that were so good that we figured we would be watching them someday playing for the Yankees. Not so. Often kids have so much undue pressure put on them by parents that they lose their love of just playing the game. Parents have to be more focused on helping their children become responsible adults and people of character.

Have you ever wondered why your parents did some of the things that they did. I did lots of times. My dad had so many regimented activities that I thought he had a screw lose or something. I’m only going to talk about two here because there are too many to put into one episode of this podcast. As I grew older though I cam to realize that what I learned as a child were the missing puzzle pieces that I needed to stay healthy. Young people today are always searching for their own puzzle pieces. But, when we get older we come to realize that the puzzle pieces were handed to us, we just didn't know what to do with them. Wherever you are in life realize that change is a step of faith and we are all never too old to learn something.

School Shooting have been around now for over 20 years. My prayers are and always will be with the victims friends and family's. My question is though how do you address the trauma that kids will experience on an ongoing basis because of what they witnessed in their school. Moreover how do you help students' regain the trust and confidence in their teacher's, principals, and in society in general that they will keep them safe and out of harms way. Truly in every school shooting there are victims that are killed tragically, but there are also victims that remain who are so traumatized that learning can almost become impossible.

So What do we do about school and other shootings? Schools have done what they can to try and quell the fears of parents and teachers by setting up protocols for active shooters. My wife who is a classroom mother had to go through checkpoints in our daughter's school and had to be escorted to her classroom. Yet yesterday Salvador Ramos walked into Robb Elementary School In Uvalde Texas and shot 19 students and 2 teachers killing them. In Buffalo NY on May 14, 2022 13 people were killed in a racially charged incident by Payton Gendron who had a manifesto on a social media platform and identified himself as a white supremacist. Is there an answer? I think we have to first identify the problem in order to come up with a solution. We as a society are becoming more and more bitter. We can't stand our own design and are angry because of who we are, our parents, our environment, our status, and our upbringing. By the way Ramos shot his grandmother before he went over to the school. There is a choice that needs to be made. Oh, I don't doubt that the mental health system in this country needs and overhaul, but in reality we can all choose love not hate, acceptance instead of racism, respect, not rudeness and unkindness, responsibility, not excuses, and above all our country has to learn how to value the differences and choose life not death. Please join me and pray for the families of those who have been killed in these senseless acts of violence and hate.

Sometimes in order to be supportive of our kids we need to listen more than we speak. Attention is a commodity and all kids want it but with that attention could come a host of socially related issues. Taking the time to help our children become more socially resilient will help them now and down the road. I have taken the time to curate the article that i have linked below and think that you will find this episode an excellent listen.
I also speak in this episode about the importance of taking care of yourself and becoming more aware of your health and genetics. Dr. Frankenstein creation was put together with used body parts from corpses that were buried in a graveyard. The head was that of a criminal who was just executed for his crimes by hanging and the brain used was referred to as abnormal. (It was from a murderer) The perfect head (maybe) and the brain they needed. Well suppose that brain wasn’t that of a criminal. Suppose it was the brain of a college graduate who was wrongly executed. Suppose the brain was from a father of three with an IQ of 140. Suppose the head was from a handsome Brad Pitt looking fellow that all the girls just went crazy for. This would make quite a story and today Dr. Frankenstein would be on the cover of Time Magazine showing off his newly created friend. I have created a lesson plan for you to use with this podcast and would encourage you if you are a teacher or maybe even a parent to solicit some answers and try and determine how your student's or children would deal with the differences associated with a laboratory creation today.

Kids are going to disagree whether we like it or not. Giving your students a voice helps to reduce anger. The idea here is that “attitude is everything.” Too often kids, when they disagree, will personalize the disagreement, resulting in name-calling or the berating of others. Often bullies will use their power to force their victim into submission. Teaching students the right way to disagree with each other builds confidence, boundaries, and maturity. It helps both the bully and the victim.

I had the joy of interviewing Katie on my show and was really taken by her new book "The Only Way Out" and her knowledge base about bullying, and the dynamic between bullies and victims. Written to touch hearts and inspire change, The Only Way Out is rooted in an empowering message to TALK.
She dedicates the book to her two beautiful children – but also someone else very important: Amanda Todd. Parents today have a terrible time when their children leave home. That is because they know deep down that they haven't done enough to prepare their children for independence. Children today are not given enough basic responsibilities, and aren't prepared for being responsible for all that lies ahead in their lives. These children haven't learned enough about survival out in the dog eat dog world. They are emotionally immature. Emotionally mature people have certain characteristics that make it easy to recognize them. What are these characteristics and what does an emotionally mature person look like? This is the second of a three part series. So listen in and enjoy this episode of Anti Bullying 101.

I interviewed Jen Dalton on my show about 2 months ago and found the interview to be inspiring and thought provoking. So much so that I asked her if she would co-host a show with me. Well, this is the show. I think you will find Jen's knowledge in the area of confidence to be unique and has a nice balance of empirical research and experiential opinion. In case you missed it I am republishing her bio below along with some books and websites.
Jen or Jenny Dalton is an author, facilitator, coach, and healer. Her work in the world flows from facilitating healthier local food systems and fundraising for an orphanage in Haiti, to talking about her recently published book “Of Butterflies & Bullies” – a Judy Blume inspired story about her experience being bullied in 5th grade. She’s also launching, soon, The Better Friends Club which will create a virtual space for women to transform friendship with self and others and heal from childhood bullying and other friendship challenges. You will find her to be an inspiring and passionate person who cares deeply about helping those who are the victim of harassment, intimidation, and bullying and in making the world a better place.

Last week I produced an episode on an article in The NY Times titled "No Way To Grow Up." Great article that spoke to the problems our kids were facing due to virtual learning. This week the NY City Schools want to put everyone on virtual because of staff shortages as well as the number of students who have contracted the CORONA Virus. Mean while parents are up in arms because their child's school was shut down after the holiday break. For the sake of our children we need to work together on solving these school related issues peacefully and in a way that keeps everyone healthy and safe. This problem is not going away soon. I have made a few recommendation in this episode so listen in and enjoy.

No Way To Grow Up. A great article written in a newsletter by David Leonhardt for The New York Times. The first sentence states: American children are starting 2022 in crisis. Well, American children in every generation have always had some type of crisis. Addiction, bullying, suicidal ideation, depression back in the sixties we had the crisis of academics when Russia put a man in orbit before the United States. As a boy my crisis was managing the alcoholism and PTSD that my father brought home with him from World War Two, along with malaria and TB. The article speaks for itself but as adults we have to grow up emotionally and communicate to our children that they will be okay and let them know that resiliency is the word of the day and everyone can and will bounce back. The Pandemic truly is not the problem. Lack of resiliency might be; adult guidance, wisdom, and leadership have to improve if our children are going to experience the physical, mental, and emotional growth needed for lifelong success.

On Saturday, Tim Throne, who heads the Oxford Community Schools district, detailed in a letter the school's account of several key events leading up to the shooting at the high school by Ethan Crumbley.
"It's critically important to the victims, our staff and our entire community that a full and transparent accounting be made. To that end, I've asked for a third-party investigation be conducted so we leave no stone unturned, including any and all interaction the student had with staff and students," Throne wrote in the letter addressed to the Oxford community.
In this podcast I critique the events. I am and have been concerned about how many after the fact reports and comments always seem to be made that point to the shooter as a potential problem the victim of bullying or dangerous. In this case the counselor of the school told the parents of Ethan Crumbley to take their child home and they flat out refused. Minutes later the shooting started. He had a gun in his backpack during the meeting. This boy is only a child and is being charged as an adult.

On November 24 I had the privilege of being interviewed by Dianne DeOliveira a radio host down here at the Jersey Shore. She has several shows, the one that I was interviewed on was Jersey Shore Matters on 107.1 The Boss. She asked some great questions. The purpose of the interview of course was to gain some insight into bullying but also to shed so light on the Wall Township High School Football hazing incident. I did a show on this tragic issue last week. You can listen to that episode by clicking HERE.

Well it's happened again. For the second time in fours years another student was hazed and assaulted in a high school locker room in New Jersey. The victim was held down and the perpetrators allegedly tried to sodomy him with a broom stick. You can read the attached article. This podcast offers some suggestions on how we can stop this madness. Better locker room supervision along with stronger more meaningful consequences would be a start. Listen in and read the article.

My name is Jim Burns I wanted to take a few minutes to tell you as my readers and listeners about a very interesting and fun way of taking some course work with a reasonable investment of time, and at cost that is totally affordable. Even when you take courses online or virtually there is still an investment of time that must be put in in order to receive the instruction and complete the course. Too often you might be a bit too tired after work and not want to have to sit at your computer for a couple of hours after dinner in order to respond to a forum post or answer some course questions.
But what if you could take bits and pieces of the course during the day without your computer and you could receive instruction just by listening to lectures on your phone....Listen to find out more

Resiliency is not something that is taught but developed over time through experience and life lessons. We are all only a compilation of what people have said to us and what people have done to us. How we perceive the words and actions of others and difficult situations may determine how resilient we are. If a person is raised in a highly critical home and his/her parents do nothing but correct, condemn, berate, and shame, as the person grows older even the slightest amount of constructive suggestion can be a trigger that creates anger and anxiety.
Our goal should be to help our students and children realize these triggers at a young age and give them the tools to become good counter punchers and learn how to bounce back when something that is said or done to them sends them into a tailspin. How is this done? It’s done by understanding what we are all individually responsible for and what can be done by “me” and me alone to manage people, situations, and the environment. Listen in as Jim shares his insights and experiences about developing resiliency and why it is so important.

Parents who are angry and irate can wreak havoc in a school and can be intimidating. Teachers need to learn how to defuse power struggles and maintain their dignity, as they handle planned and unplanned parent /teacher conferences. We are in a post 9-11 era. Even though security is tight angry parents always seem to find their way in to a school building to try and corner an unsuspecting teacher. The COVID pandemic has created more angry people than ever before with everyone disagreeing and judging others for their beliefs and opinions. This podcast will help the teacher deal with parents who are now more angry than ever and will help them remain calm in the midst the storm.

We all are responsible for 5 areas. Our thoughts, words, actions, attitudes, and motives. They are all interrelated and there is a domino effect when we fail to take responsibility in any one area. Bullying behavior can have a lasting effect on those who experience social, emotional, or physical abuse at the hands of a bully. Why don’t kids and bullies in particular heed the warning of adults and just listen and stop saying and doing things that are just downright cruel? Listen to this episode and find out why.

Let’s face it. No one likes a confrontation. Often, confrontations come out of the blue, and we can find ourselves in a very uncomfortable position where we need to quickly find the right words to defend ourselves. I’ve been a teacher since 1977, and I have experienced my fair share of unpleasant confrontations with students, parents, teachers, and even administrators. But the most difficult confrontations to deal with are those that occur in front of your class. These confrontations are not taking place out in the hallway between just the student and you as the teacher. They occur in plain view of every student in the room, and your students become an audience watching a drama unfold that has the potential to damage your future ability to teach in that classroom. Confrontations that occur between you and another adult can damage the relationship and leave everyone suffering. Take a listen to this episode of Anti Bullying 101. Jim will give you some sure fire ways to deal with confrontational students and parents and help you become more situationally responses not reactive.

Part Three Of A Three Part Series
In reality Kryptonite doesn't exist in physical form but the concept of it does. There are many things and individuals that weaken us. There are kids that weaken, spouses that weaken, philosophies, theories, and policies that weaken. There are systems that weaken, government can weaken, and religion at times can weaken. As an example it only takes one or two behavior problems in a classroom to make the students and at times the teacher feel unsafe to the point where the entire class is weakened and learning almost becomes impossible. Religion and spirituality is a great way for many to quell fears, and deal with the stresses of life. If the leader of a church or any other group though becomes bigger than the group itself and uses his/her position to control others with the use of their Svengoli powers the individuals who are part of the group can become more reliant on him/her than on what the group actually represents producing weak and fearful followers who unwittingly have been lead into a cult.
What one generation does in moderation the next one does in excess. Once a society has been weakened inter-generationally meaning over time the battle for truth, justice, and the American way becomes all that more difficult. We begin to lean more toward the path of least resistance and mediocrity and become more focused on political correctness than on the truth. The habits, beliefs, and thoughts, that had their origin forty years ago that were meant for good have become twisted and are now used as either a crutch or worse yet as an excuse for deviant behavior.
Yes the schools are filled with Kryptonite and more and more of it is being brought into classrooms everyday by families, society, and by some of the faulty theories and philosophies that have been communicated in our colleges and universities. The educational system has been weakened and needs to be looked at through a different lens, with a paradigm shift starting to take place.

As we conclude part 2 of "Who is Jim Burns" I am going to be going over who Jim Burns really. I was born Jim Burns but, how long did it take before I started to understand my own thoughts, words, and actions. How did my upbringing shape me and influence my behavior in relationships, friendships, and even marriage? We all need to set daily, weekly, yearly, and even lifelong goals. But, I believe one of my mistakes over time was mistaking movement for progress, and I ran in place for too many years. This is part 1 of 2. This is part 2 of 2 Learning from my mistakes and failures became an important part of my life after college. My personal life took a hit as I moved into administration because I didn't have my priorities straight nor did I truly understand my role as a father. It took almost twenty years before I learned how to create balance in my life. The journey was worth it. The Bully Proof Classroom Anti Bullying 101 Premium Podcast Membership

A new year can bring about some new goals and maybe a resolution or two. Resolutions usually don't last because at times they are too unrealistic. Setting some reasonable goals that are manageable can bring about desired results and lasting change. In this episode Jim discusses 5 qualities that we all should be working on for 2021; love, joy, peace, patience, and self control. Take the time to really listen to this episode and determine how as individuals we can begin to incorporate these 5 important behaviors into our lives. It's not easy, but if we all take the time to self reflect we will be taking the steps toward an improved quality of life and a more peaceful, kinder, and caring home, school, community, and nation.

Sometimes it's good to be alone, and we all need that from time to time. Loneliness is another story, and the victims of bullying have self excluded themselves because of the fear of being bullied and the experience of being betrayed by those that they thought were friends. Loneliness can produce hopelessness and depression. As parents and teachers we have to be aware of the symptoms of loneliness and help our children and students begin to realize that they do have a purpose in this world and that they truly can connect with others.

Meet Riddhi and Vasundhara Oswal
On Monday November 21, 2020 I had the pleasure of interviewing Riddhi and Vasundhara Oswal. These two dynamic young ladies have used their own experience and the pain of bullying to found the Stop The B anti bullying campaign. And what a job they are doing.
Riddhi is a 16-year-old student, aspiring engineer and co-founder of Stop the B. After having experienced bullying and the stigmatizing effect of double-punishment at her previous school in Switzerland, Riddhi was determined to turn her negative experience into a positive one and create a campaign to help stop bullying and bystanding.
Vasundhara – aged 22 – was inspired to create Stop The B after witnessing her younger sister being bullied at school. She is also currently working in the family business, as the finance director of a new multi-million-dollar business venture in South East Asia. Vasundhara believes that Stop The B is a force for good, by seeking to empower people to become ‘active bystanders’ by removing the stigma associated with speaking out and reporting bullying. I was thrilled to have them on the show and believe that their efforts will go a long way in helping to stop bullying world wide. Please take the time to visit their Facebook and twitter pages.

Acts of bullying were brought to the forefront after the devastating incident at Columbine High School in April 1999. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold demonstrated many telltale signs of the victims of bullying that were left unnoticed, and the reality is, no one saw them at all.” If you look at acts of violence, you'll find comments from friends, neighbors, acquaintances saying that this person was weird, he was odd, it was only a matter of time," retired FBI criminal profiler Jim Wright said. "All of a sudden -- when the act is over -- a lot of people knew it was going to happen." Knowing what we know now it is evident that victims of bullying develop tremendous hate for their perpetrator, and fear establishing relationships with others because of the chance that they will be hurt again. This anger and fear resides in the heart and soul of a victim and roots itself causing the person to become so bitter and so debilitated by these emotions that it is only a matter of time before this rage will manifest itself. Unfortunately, this rage expresses itself often in adulthood when the person’s spouse or child discovers that their husband, wife, mom or dad is not the person they appear to be. Acts of bullying including violence may permeate the home creating an environment of fear and intimidation. The message that you get what you want through fear or asserting yourself through intimidation becomes a thought process that children develop and ultimately use on others outside the home, in school, and in the community. The victim if not dealt with using appropriate interventions and counseling produces the next bully. Listen in as Jim offers some insight on how stop this pattern of behavior and stop producing family, school, and community bullies.

Well hi everybody my name is Jim Burns host of anti bullying 101. I want to share with you information about an exciting course that will help you manage stress and keep and stay focused. The course: Stress Management Through a Balanced Life.
As individuals we constantly strive to climb the ladder of success and work to become our personal best. Almost every continuing education class or workshop is designed to help people accomplish this. Even though these classes are valuable they don’t address the idea that life is a balancing act and there is not one basic area to consider but many. Some classes focus on exercise, or success in a relationship or greater financial stability. But, true change comes from within and it is the character of the person that really makes a difference. The balance between job and family responsibilities can at times be inappropriately misplaced because of a lack of understanding of priorities and the realization of what is really important.
This 5 hour course covers fours areas that need to be addressed to help manage stress and create lifelong balance. When we understand the importance exercise, mental focus, our relationship with others, and our value system we will strike that balance and relieve the stress that comes with being overwhelmed by life and all of its responsibilities.
This course will be available on Tuesday November 17, 2020. Just go to www.bullyproofclassroom.comand click on the link for courses. If you prefer to listen to a podcast of the course which includes the lecture notes go to: https://www.patreon.com/join/3225415.
This course offers some strategies and suggestions on how to manage stress and begin to incorporate these crucial areas into your life and create a structure that anyone can live with and maintain.

The election is over I think and the split between Trump and Biden was almost 50-50. How does a nation get along when there is such a divide between it's people. As individuals we aren't going to always agree with each other but we have to begin to try and disagree with the right attitude and cooperate even though we disagree. There are many things that we all must do including politicians to help bridge the gap with those who have a different belief system and learn how to value the differences in order to see life from another person's perspective. Join Jim as he explores how we can all get along as a nation by teaching our children some important principles and by being an example and practicing them ourselves.

With the right language a victim can stop a bully. A child needs coaching and some rehearsal in order to come up with the right words at the right time. Teachers and parents need to take the initiative and begin to help their student's/children develop those words that can defuse and deflect a bully's advances. This episode goes over some of the language necessary to build resilience and confidence. I have include a link for my listeners to a product called Comeback Cards. These cards can be posted around the room or shared virtually with your students to help them begin to make the language part of their vocabulary. I have also attached a YouTube video by Brook Gibbs titled How To Stop A Bully. Enjoy the podcast.

As teachers and as parents, we constantly have sought to improve the behavior and the academic achievement of our children. Almost every continuing education workshop or class is designed to help educators accomplish this. Even though this is valuable, these workshops fail to address the idea that it is the character of the teacher/parent that will affect a child's success in the classroom and ultimately in life. We can fall into the trap of becoming so focused on the deficits of others, that we become less concerned about their own areas of personal growth. This course is designed to help educators, parents, and anyone who wants personal change to become more self-aware and give them strategies to personally strengthen themselves. The effect of becoming more self-actualized will help adults become more effective in their respective roles, and be much better equipped to meet the needs of all children.

In this world of technology and the pandemic of COVID-19 more and more children are involved in sedentary life styles. Virtual learning keeps kids from recess and physical education and the idea of riding a bike almost seems foreign to most kids. More importantly kids don't realize the importance of lifelong fitness and what it looks like. In this episode I explore why it's important for kids to get fit and stay fit and how a positive body image can improve self esteem, build confidence, and more importantly prevent one from being bullied.

Children and adults alike can have a difficult time establishing boundaries and learning how to just say no. The statement, “I am not used to being spoken to that way” can have a far reaching benefit as children grow older. When children are not taught how to establish their boundaries they can grow into adults and develop attitudes that at times can be resentful, revengeful, and reactions that are full of anger and frustration.
Establishing boundaries can be daunting for children especially now when bullying is so prevalent in our society. It does take courage and it is something that requires the quality of self respect and responsibility. The 10 questions contained in the journal are designed to help children reflect on their own attitudes and discover ways to learn how to disagree but with the right attitude. Having conversations that are uncomfortable is something that we all need to have at times and it takes courage of both parties to really facilitate change. Listen in as Jim outlines the 10 steps necessary for a courageous conversation to take place. Take the time to order the journal Courageous Conversations. This journal can be used to facilitate change in a family, a school, or a corporation.

Some stress is a good thing; too much though can cause anxiety, depression, fear, and worry. Those who have experienced abuse, neglect, and violence may have trouble getting a grip on reality, and their thoughts. When those thoughts of the past plague a person they may be experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
People with PTSD have intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to their experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended. They may relive the event through flashbacks or nightmares; they may feel sadness, fear or anger; and they may feel detached or estranged from other people. People with PTSD may avoid situations or people that remind them of the traumatic event, and they may have strong negative reactions to something as ordinary as a loud noise or an accidental touch.
This episode of Anti Bullying 101 covers some of my experience with PTSD and should help the listener understand the condition. Because I take this condition so seriously I have started another podcast called Trauma Stories. This podcast is designed to provide my listeners with a platform to share their stories either through email or by being a guest on the show. My goal is to provide a platform for those with PTSD to be heard and share their story of healing. My hope is to provide faith, support, and hope.

Beth Keeping is a singer/songwriter from Surrey, UK. Drawing influences from both traditional country storytelling and modern pop music, Keeping delivers a fresh and modern sound of what she calls “pop stories”. Creating songs that speak about real situations, her honest lyrical approach and emotive vocals have been garnering attention from fans and critics across the globe.
Inspired into the music industry by artists such as Delta Goodrem, John Mayer and Martyn Joseph, Keeping found herself travelling the world, writing and recording in the UK, Singapore, Ireland, Estonia, Andalusia and America. Her debut EP Fool, which was recorded in Nashville, showcased her love for country music and its powerful ability to depict vivid stories through sound. However, her most recent work takes a move towards more mainstream pop, whilst reserving her signature authentic anecdotal lyrics.
Keeping’s latest single “Cool Kids” is a self-empowering anthem for anyone who has experienced bullying. Inspired by the news that a boy who used to bully her at school now listens to her music, she shares, “I heard that he and his friends respect me because I decided to pursue my dreams and do something different instead of following the standard career path. I have to admit, it felt pretty great to hear that!” Despite its feel-good melodies, there is a juxtaposition between the music and lyrics, with a deeper element recognising how serious bullying is and why we do it. Keeping explains, “Whether it's at school or in the workplace, bullying happens when those who are popular or powerful in some way choose to use that power against others. And usually this behavior is driven by something deeper such as insecurity, peer pressure, personal trauma or having been bullied themselves.” The song reminds listeners that we all have a choice - we can choose to bully and to retaliate, or we can choose peace, and understand and forgive those who have used their power against us.
Watch The Video Here
Produced by Kaity Rae (The Shires, Lisa Pac) “Cool Kids” sonically blends bass heavy, plucky instrumentation with minimalist production styles inspired by the likes of Taylor Swift and Lauv. Honest, sassy lyrics narrate some of Keeping’s real life experiences, referencing some of her previous singles as a lighthearted hint that the “cool kids” have been listening to them. The fun pop song treads the line between confidence and vulnerability, acting as an infectious, dance worthy track to help others going through a similar experience.
As founder of 'Write Like A Girl', an initiative that puts the spotlight back on female songwriters, Keeping is an advocate of championing the rights of women and equality in the music industry. Keeping shares, “It’s an idea I’ve had for years after I woke up to the gender imbalance at networking nights I was going to. In fact, only 18% of songwriters in the UK are women (PRS for Music, 2019)”. Write Like A Girl hosts sell-out writers round shows in London, Newcastle and Bristol, and since lockdown have begun a Q&A series on Instagram called 'Girl Power Hour'. Keeping has also seen success winning a PRS songwriting prize in a Mayor of London GIGs competition, as well as reaching #3 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart for her debut EP.

COVID-19 or the coronavirus as it is called has really interfered with the lifestyle of the entire world. It has had a far reaching affect on the health, economy and the emotional state of every individual. We can only do one thing and that's take care of ourselves and do things to reduce the worry and fear that this virus has caused. In my last episode I spoke about the four dimensions of life: the physical, the mental, the social and emotional, and the spiritual. Here I attempt to guide you through each dimension and make some suggestions as to what you can do within each of the dimensions to help you overcome the stress that the coronavirus brings.

It's nice to be back after a 2 month layoff. I appreciate my listeners and guarantee them an episode of Anti Bullying 101 every Wednesday and maybe more. The events of the past month have saddened me and I am left with a heavy heart. I also share my thoughts in this episode to address the need to do virtual professional development of which I am including a link to some live courses that I will be teaching. Also a very big question will come shortly and that is will children be able to go back to school in September? I have outlined a game plan if the corona virus is still an active part of our lives and as we move forward into what is no called the new normal. Today I have the pleasure of interviewing a young lady named Phylicia Stubblefield. She is a Houston Texas native and is currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in community health education in California. Her experience with bullying began in the firth grade and at 31 is still recovering from post adult bullying syndrome, a condition which is the result of long term abuse. As part of this condition she developed trichotillomania (which is the pulling of one's own hair) which she did for 18 years. The good news is she hasn't pulled her hair in months and continues on her journey toward full recovery. Her goal is to use her story to help others heel and to educate communities about the dangers of bullying and why we have to take a comprehensive approach when dealing with the problem. I believe everyone will enjoy her story of faith and hope as she continues to heel from the scars of bullying.

I wrote The New 3R’s In Education: Respect, Responsibility, and Relationships 15 years ago. At the time it was difficult for teacher, parents, and administrators to buy in to this philosophy. With the events over the past many years I believe that this book has more meaning now than ever. I will be sharing chapters of this book during the next 10 episodes of Anti Bullying 101 with commentary and ask that you take a good hard look at the state of society, education, and our culture and consider what you hear and use the philosophy to facilitate change. What qualities would any student need if they were going live in the real world right now as adults? I’m talking about the basics, but, these behaviors are so important to the lifelong success of any individual. What are the five behaviors that I discovered? When I started to enforce the rules around these behaviors things started to change and change quickly.
I discovered that everyone not only kids need to develop these five qualities
All students had to have a high regard for the rights and privileges of another person: RESPECT
All students had to learn how to follow through on a task and what the consequence would be if they didn’t: RESPONSIBILITY
We all live in the same world and in order to get along we have to develop RELATIONSHIPS with key people in our lives and understand how to nourish those relationships so they grow and flourish
I needed to help my students and others realize that if they fail it doesn’t make them a failure and how not to be discouraged by a low test score or a sports related issue. RESILENCY
Society requires COMPLIANCE from those in authority all the time; teachers, parents, law enforcement, employers. Compliance is doing what you are told when you are told to do it with a good attitude.
Once I started focusing on these 5 areas and built my rules around these qualities a few things happened
**1. The school climate changed
I had less discipline referrals
Kids did what they were told
The school was a kinder place**
5. And Kids seemed to be able to handle the truth better regarding grades and behavior
I am introducing to you The Anti Bullying Series. If you listened to this episode you know what I am referring to. I ask that you click the link below NOW and take the time to ask yourself; Am I doing my best to help put an end to bullying? We all can do more. Click on the link below.

Another school shooting in California. Comments by officials refer to the perpetrator as a trouble young man. Why are we missing this as professionals. We can't go on allowing kids to be rude, discourteous, and disrespectful at a young age because they will transform as they get older into troubled teens and adults. Listen to how disrespect was handled 50 years ago and why we have to begin to stop the compromises and demand respect and compliance from our children. If not this intergenerational problem will only get worse.

As a young boy I always had a fear of authority. I don’t mean the police, I mean adults other than my parents. There was always some authority figure who was correcting me in the community or in school. Since my father was the owner of a pretty popular bar in a very small town, I was well known in the town, and I knew a lot of adults. If I was involved in some stupid behavior on one side of town my parents found out through the grapevine very quickly. My parents never questioned the guy who told them about my behavior, regardless of whether or not he was drunk. They would always question me, because I was the kid, and they believed the adult. It always seemed like I was found out one way or another.
The other thing that never failed was if I was told not to do something and I disobeyed, something bad always happened to me as a result. I don’t mean like getting yelled at by my father; I mean something really bad would happen that was a direct consequence of my rebellious attitude. Listen in and find out some real consequences for failing to understand the purpose of authority.

I’ve been fighting this problem for over 40 years, and truthfully I just want it to go away but I know it won’t. My heart breaks every time I hear of another bullying related incident that had tragic results. Teachers need help and guidance in dealing with this issue and I’ve put together a program that I believe will truly make a difference.
The Anti Bullying Boot Camp provides a series of five courses that will help transform you and your school by using a radical approach to teaching respect and encouraging responsibility. Each course focuses on key elements that will produce profound results. With every great break through there has to be a break with. These courses break with traditional methods of dealing with bullying and other bullying related behaviors to provide the tools for permanent help not temporary relief.

If you have been listening to this podcast you know who I am but, in case you forgot my name is Jim Burns. This is my forty third year in education. I’ve worked as a teacher, administrator and now a college instructor. The one thing that I hear teachers talk about all the time is what do we do with kids who are just plain unmotivated and give the impression that they just don’t care.
There is a direct relationship between motivation and discipline. The hard to motivate are often hard to discipline and teachers are becoming increasingly more frustrated and keep asking what do we do with students who are not prepared, don’t care, won’t work, are passive aggressive and are on track for failure as adults. Finding the right tools and strategies to increase motivation can solve a host of behavior problems and there are many things educators can do to reawaken motivation in students who have lost interest and perhaps hope. The course Motivating Disaffected and Hard to Handle Students will help teachers develop techniques that build respect, increase responsibility, and develop greater compliance in students who are uncooperative and hard to handle. It will help teachers overcome the strong emotional frustration that saps their energy and ultimately leads to burnout.
By taking this online course you’ll
· Learn the symptoms of difficult students and intervention plans that work
· Build respect and rapport with your most difficult students
· Understand why students don’t care
· Develop language that confronts without condemning
· Break through the emotional wall of your students and increase motivation and responsibility
· Strengthen relationships with even your most difficult students
This course will change the way you handle students who are unmotivated and will make a difference in how they view life moving forward. To take the course click on the link at the end of this video. (It says at the end of the video in the podcast but I am providing the link for the course here.) Also just for listening you get a FREE Book.

I came to realize as I began my teaching career that my students, other teachers, and even the parents I worked with were caught up with the trials of life and couldn’t focus on academic tasks. Teachers and society in general started believing that people with these shortcomings had ADD. I know I had some pieces missing, and I definitely wasn’t the sum of my parts. My students had pieces missing; their parents had pieces missing; and many other people had some pieces missing. What were these missing pieces?

My dad and mom owned a bar so at a very early age it became very easy for me to be around people who drank all the time. From the time I was a kid I thought that the whole world drank and got drunk. My dad was a binge drinker and he would go of on a bender every six months or so. He would be gone from one to three days. I always asked my mom where dad slept when he was gone and she would say in the car. I wasn’t sure who drove who crazier, mom or dad. Dad would drink and drive mom nuts, but when dad was sober mom would say things to dad to get under his skin. So I wasn’t sure if mom drove dad to drink or dad’s drinking drove my mom to make those comments. I didn’t really drink as a teenager but started to drink when I go married the first time. I drank a lot during the summer, and when I bar tended at a restaurant in South NJ. As I became unhappy in my marriage I drank more and more until my drinking got a little out of control and I became frightened of my own behavior and my thoughts. If you want to discover a whole lot about an illness or a condition all you have to do is get it or think that you have it and you will start to read all there is to read about it in books, magazines, online or any place you can find the info. I came across this acronym in a book, ACOA. What the hell does this mean? Well it means Adult Child of an Alcoholic. I read more and discovered that somebody hooked a bunch of symptoms to the conditions, 13 to be exact. What an unlucky number.

When young people make it a habit to drink in order to deal with problems they have socially, their emotions to go dormant at the age that they started to drink, which then prevents them from maturing emotionally. Drinking becomes their social and emotional coping mechanism. These young people do not experience the natural growing pains that must be gone through where they learn how to interact with others on their own, without using the alcohol to help them. Natural growing pains that are part of the maturation process should not be avoided or salved by the use of alcohol because the alcohol or any other addictive substance will only retard their maturity or cause it to never be developed.
Victims of bullying avoid social situations for fear of being harassed, intimidated and bullied. As adults we need to keep a keen eye on those young adults who are being victimized and watch for any signs of addiction. They need our help.

After WWII a new kind of generation was born in the United States. Because of the after effects of the World War II, the United States experienced an economical boom, which resulted in high income jobs, and unemployment rates were non-existent. Education was also enhanced by the government and universities and colleges were prompting people to get a college degree. Education was cheap, and was readily available. In fact, many took college courses to open up higher paying job opportunities Because of this lifestyle; many people became financially secure. This financial freedom allowed people have more children. There was a significant increase in birth rates. People who were born within this period are called baby boomers. Baby boomers were born between the years of 1946-1964.
To me it seems like things really changed during this generation. Dr Spock came along, and his book became a child rearing bible for many people. Parents changed their approach to raising their children. It started to become in vogue for parents to be less authoritarian and more liberal in raising their children. The result? The baby boomers themselves took this to an extreme when they began to have children themselves. They took this more liberal mentality and kicked it up a huge notch. Baby boomer parents believed that their babies and then their children had the right to decide everything. This included when they got fed, what they wanted to eat, what they wanted to wear, and what they wanted to say and do. Everything became the idea that children had the right to choose.

Have you ever wondered why your parents did some of the things that they did. I did lots of times. My dad had so many regimented activities that I thought he had a screw lose or something. I’m only going to talk about two here because there are too many to put into one episode. I really spent time observing my dad as a kid and listening to him as well, and it wasn’t until I was about forty that I realized some of the benefits of his behavior and very recently some of the real benefits of his behavior.

Those who have difficulty scholastically can be viewed as someone who has focus issues or maybe even ADHD. That isn't always the case. Problems with authority, parents, insecurities, and the inability to handle conflict and confrontations all play a part in a person's inability to succeed academically. When looking at the problem of bullying it becomes obvious that the inability to focus is related to childhood trauma that impacts a child in a variety of ways. We need to take a closer look at how bullying affects a child's achievement.

Bullying occurs for two reason; weakness and difference. No one could have been more different yet more talented than Janis Joplin. The abuse that she suffered at the hands of bullies was unthinkable. Nothing was ever done and she used her music and art as a means of emotional expression. Regardless of how talented she was the scars always remained and she was emotionally troubled for most of her life, because of the harassment, intimidation, bullying and abuse.. She died of an accidental heroin over dose on October 4, 1970 at the young age of 27.

Some parents don't want their kids to grow up. They fear through independence they will forget them and use guilt and fear to control their children. This is sick behavior and can almost appear to be equal to harassment, intimidation, and bullying. If this is happening to you remember it's not you. As kids we earned that conflict and confrontations are just part of life. We learned how to disagree and we now do it with the right attitude. The bullying epidemic must be eradicated but, the victims must be strengthened and to do that we need to help our kids find a field, a ball of any kind, and maybe a bat and glove, but most of all we have to teach our kids how to play again.

As our students move forward in life, their desire to have meaningful relationships with the opposite sex intensifies and dating becomes a real novelty. Discussions in high school, and even middle schools, are continually taking place about who is seeing whom, and who likes whom. Even people who are older and have been away from the dating seen for a while find this type of situation awkward, and at times, uncomfortable. Just take a look at two people who are in the initial stages of building a relationship. He/she seems to be the greatest. Get to know them, I mean really know them, and what they are really about. Get on the inside track, and the indecisiveness of whether or not to stay will cause such fear, that arguments will be more common than holding hands. Young daters, and by young I mean high school age ,are more prone to being harassed and intimidated in a relationship then ever before. They enter in and really don’t know how to get out. And, often when they try to get out, they are harassed with rumors and gossip flooding the school building, destroying a person’s reputation. What do people fear the most? Sadly, people fear each other, and the closer they get to someone, the more they fear them. At the high school level our students need to be taught the ins and outs of dating. But, more emphasis needs to be placed on reading someone’s motives and knowing how to make a graceful exit when necessary. Teenagers stay in abusive relationships for many reasons; low self-esteem is one of them. Teach your students that they have a choice and to stay firm when they decide to either stay in or get out. The divorce rate is already too high.

When I first started talking about the quality of compliance I used the word obedience. I got such a negative reaction from teachers and parents that I had to change the name of the quality from obedience to compliance. It seemed as if obedience was too strong a word and parents and teachers were offended by it. I still don’t think that there is anything wrong with the word obedience. Thirty years ago we demanded obedience from children. Today we can't even use the word, and obedience turns out to be the last thing we get from children. Well, what is the definition of compliance? Compliance is when a person does what he is told, when he is told to do it, with a good attitude. And willfulness is the opposite of the character quality of compliance.

The character quality of forgiveness is a tough one for most people to practice on a consistent basis. Most people when they are wronged want to forgive because in reality the reason they are forgiving someone is for their own mental health. Unfortunately a person may forgive another person but may have a tough time forgetting what was done to them. So they bounce back and forth between forgiveness and resentment. The quality of forgiveness defined is the ability to cease feeling bitter toward one’s offender and not holding a grudge against him or her. The opposite of forgiveness is resentment. Everyone knows that is better to forgive someone, but often a person will say that they forgive another but way down deep they still harbor bitterness. Often that bitterness will rear its ugly head in the form of angry outburst that could be directed at their friends or loved ones, who often wonder why they are so miserable and unhappy.

For some reason people in society believe that there is nothing wrong with lying or bending the truth. People can usually find a way to justify their actions by saying, "Oh, that was just a little white lie," and they really do believe that there is nothing wrong with lying. What is truthfulness and why is it so important? The definition of the word truthfulness is earning future trust by accurately reporting past facts. People who are truthful earn trust and are viewed by others as being honest. A person's reputations is based upon their ability to tell the truth, and their lives can be ruined if they are viewed as liars.

When a person waste or uses their resources incorrectly, problems will always occur in areas such as employment, family, and in their attitude about life. It is true that there is no substitute for hard work. Often time’s people don’t take their jobs seriously enough or view the jobs that they do as so menial that they don’t do the job to completion or they don’t put forth their best effort. Children in school who may not understand their subject matter tend to give up when the work becomes to hard, and don’t have the drive to put their mind to the work in order to complete assignments. Parents whose children don’t behave and are disrespectful and irresponsible may give up trying to discipline their children because they feel like a failure as a parent. Workers who feel less than appreciated by their employer become unmotivated on the job and just go through the motions job and feel like they don’t have any purpose at work or in life. Listen in as Jim explains the importance of the quality of diligence.

The concepts of self-control, delayed gratification and discipline seem so counter to our cultural values. We use our credit cards because we want things right away. We become impatient if we wait more than a few moments at a drive-through at McDonalds. We eat ourselves into obesity and poor health because it feels good, with little consideration of the long-term consequences. Self-control should be graded in school and looked at as a quality necessary for success as an adult. We need to teach our children this important as I believe it is a quality necessary for lifelong success. Listen in as Jim holds court.

The definition of the character quality of initiative is: Recognizing and doing what needs to be done before one is asked to do it. The opposite of initiative is unresponsiveness. The idea that a person can survive and succeed in this world without initiative is ridiculous and wrong headed. Having initiative doesn’t mean that a person is pushy or obnoxious; it means that a person can see what has to be done and can take the personal responsibility to make things happen. One who possesses the character quality of initiative doesn’t allow circumstance or environment to get in the way and doesn’t make excuses for behavior, or inability to complete a task. One doesn't allow the roadblocks of life to bring one a full stop, but rather works to come up with a solution to the problem. Listen in and learn how to teach this quality to your children or students.

Many years ago schools used to take lateness much more seriously than they do today. If you have ever been in a high school and observed students milling around in the hall between classes what you would notice is that the students don’t start moving to their class until the late bell rings. I have spoken to many teachers who have complained about student tardiness and asked them what they consider late? Most of the teachers said that they consider a student late if they arrive in class about one minute after the bell rings. That’s not on time, that’s late. Schools today are contributing to the problem of tardiness in society by not holding students accountable for either being late to class or late to school.

The quality of proactivity is in a larger sense related to one's response when one is under stress and how one handles difficult situations. People who are proactive know how to choose their response in any circumstance because they have a set of values and principles that they have learned that are plugged into their heart and soul.
Reactive people on the other hand are very emotional and when they are faced with a problem they become angry, frustrated, depressed and so filled with anxiety that they tend to blame others or circumstances for their problem.
Listen in as Jim explains why we need to teach this quality to our children/students and why we have to develop our own proactive muscles as well.

When you are an effective teacher, your teaching takes hold, and your students slowly but surely learn from you, and the learning is permanent. Remember, too much too fast won’t last. It is much better to spend 10 days teaching one skill that your students will be able to use for a lifetime, than teaching 10 different skills in 10 days that your students will forget the day after you taught them. The problem that you may be faced with is being expected to move quickly through an overly ambitious curriculum. If you have the sense that your students have not grasped a concept, then spend more time on it.
When you are efficient, you have the ability to take care of the day to day administrative paperwork that seems to be never ending such as attendance, grading papers, your grade book, your lesson plans, etc. in an efficient manner. Administrative items must be dealt with efficiently so that you are freed up to teach. Understanding the difference between being effective and being efficient will help you understand what is important and what you need to devote their time to. We all know that bullies are motivated by power. They love to impose their power on those that are weaker and who are different. Victims on the other hand are motivated by revenge. When we strengthen the victims of bullying we help build their confidence and give them the opportunity stand up for themselves and become resilient. But, a victim left to themselves doesn't have the skills to stand up to a bully, and emotionally manage difficult situations. They then become angry, and bitter and need to take out their rage on someone or something. Join Jim as he walks you through the process. Take notes.

I am not a doctor or a psychologist but I do have my thoughts on why young kids are getting more and more anxious by the day. It could be medical, organic, or environmental for sure. My thoughts, our kids have to learn how to deal with, disappointment, and discomfort at times. If we do too much for them when they are young, they will always feel less capable then they really are. As kids get older responsibilities only increase, they don't decrease. So the bed that a 4 year old is making helps set the stage for their future success as an adult. Greater Responsibility can mean Less Anxiety.

I am so confused. Why in education do we constantly throw the baby out with the bath water? What was wrong with some of the strategies we used in years gone by? And, why do we continue doing things that just don't seem to net the best results for students and for teachers. Insanity, "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Things need to be kept simple and we need to teach kids and return to some basics. Einstein once said; "If you can't explain it simply you don't understand it well enough." Resiliency is not something that is taught but developed over time through experience and life lessons.

Lesbian couple attacked on bus gets blasted on social media ‘for being gay’
Social media users are adding insult to injury to the lesbian couple who suffered a chilling attack on a London bus last week.
The assault, which left an American woman with a broken jaw after she refused to kiss her partner at the urging of a group of hooligans, has spawned a litany of homophobic abuse against the pair on Facebook and Twitter.
Please read the article I have the link posted below. Listen to the this episode and share it with a friend. They have rounded up the five boys involved who were between the ages of 15 and 10. My question is what will the consequences be. I've said it before "You can't grow a conscience." No one deserves this type of treatment.

Kids have lost their ability to get along and are rapidly becoming adults who have matured physically, but not mentally, or emotionally. Society has been taught to disagree, but with the wrong attitude, so don’t disagree with me or I won’t like you. Disagreements are things that get walked away from because of the fear of conflict. The idea that a productive conflict could exist and the two parties involved could leave enough space between them for a disagreement is too tough to imagine because egos are just too big. Win-Win can’t happen because someone always has to win and someone has to lose. Don’t talk too loud now because someone will hear, and even your whispers will get back to the wrong person, like your boss who will muzzle you and make sure that you always walk the line of political correctness. EVERYBODY KNOWS that we are all victims of bullies and we will be for a lifetime. We still fear man and the man with power determines how intense that fear will be. EVERYBODY KNOWS that bullying is inter-generational and for it to go away, which it never will it is not about the 20% of kids who bully right now in our schools, communities and families it is about what they become as adults.

The truth be known; we lie to kids, and we have inflated their grades because we don’t want to destroy their self esteem. By the way, what is self esteem? Today kids feel good about themselves for no apparent reason. It is almost impossible to be left back, and if a kid has low test scores the teacher always gets the blame. So we let the kid know that he is doing great academically, inflate his grades and give him a false sense of his academic ability. Don’t worry someone will tell him, like the college he will be trying to get into in a few years. like you, but I don’t like your behavior. This little gem came out of the self-esteem movement of the 60’s and 70’s. Certain phrases or philosophies that may have worked 40 years ago may suffer from an over-use injury or are just antiquated. Students who are rude, discourteous, and disrespectful can be difficult to like. Ask yourself this: if you were treated by an adult in the same negative manner as a student treated you, how hard would it be to stand by this statement? Pretty tough. Our students do become adults, who may not be liked because of their behavior. I am not saying that you should tell kids that you don’t like them. What I am saying is that they know all too well that we don’t. Our body language, attitudes, and words are all indicators of how we feel about certain students. Bullies are very tough to get close to, and in reality, to like. Don’t let your thoughts dictate your actions; fake it, bite the bullet, and keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Do whatever it takes to build a relationship with the student who is unlikable and a potential bully. Once we come clean with our real emotions, our influence will be greater and we will then begin to facilitate a lasting relationship. So lay off drinking this kool aid and maybe some good things will happen.

Several years ago I wrote an article called "Everybody Knows." This article described 10 things that everybody knows in education and in society, but for some reason won't talk about or even do anything about. When we start to believe certain theories and philosophies for no other reason than they seem like a good idea at the time we drank the Kool Aid and the long term consequences begin to become the norm and not the exception. In this episode we cover the Kool Aid of disrespect and how slowly over time we almost have been forced to put up with unruly kids which has done nothing more than to change our disrespectful children into disrespectful adults. Educators are beginning to lose ground and in reality can be blamed for the condition of schools which is unfair. We can't continue to be muzzled. The Kool Aid may look good at the time but the thirst for respect will quickly return.
Episode 2 covers how we have bought into the idea that self control is an organic problem. Self control is taught and it needs to be dealt with like any other discipline problem; with consequences. The link below "Self Control There Is Nun Better" lends some clarification to my points in this episode.

What society has developed for good, deviant minds have used for criminal, and immoral purposes. What is the problem? Is it to difficult for individuals to enjoy the tools of convenience without trying to figure out how to use it to satisfy their own immoral appetites? Speed and the lack of impulse control plays a big part in why these acts occur on a regular basis today. The speed of text messaging, and sending pictures from a cell phone, and social media combined with the poor impulse control on the part of deviant individuals creates an environment where people can say and send anything they want to another person, things that they wouldn't say in person like "do you want to have sex," or do in person, like getting naked.

As a teacher, administrator and as a parent I was never a big fan of homework. I know that teachers assign it and kids are expected to do it, but for what reason. If a student doesn’t understand a concept in school what makes anyone think they will understand it at home? Not to mention that most times parents don’t understand the homework even if it’s as basic as third grade work. Problems always seem to arise once the question gets asked “Did you do your homework?” That usually gets asked at the dinner table or at least it used to. This is where the hometown climate goes south and discussions break out that are less savory than the meal. Those so called family discussions can turn into family battles with the fuse being lit by the topic of homework. When we sit down at the so called family table we better understand our family tree. Problems occur not because of the table, they occur because of the tree.

Well here they are 10 great ways to build any relationship. That is to build; I mean this stuff doesn’t happen over night. We may like things to happen fast but when it comes down to people expectations are always a problem, and what we expect we never get in whole and the parts that we get are never really enough. We have to learn to be patient with those that are family members, loved ones, and co-workers. We can’t keep pulling up the flowers to see how the roots are doing, and we can’t count on others to do these things for us. So, we have to take the time to work on these things and model them ourselves. They require self awareness, empathy, respect, kindness, and at times the ability to be truthful with our own shortcomings. So, let’s take a look at these and work through the process one at a time. For me writing this article is almost like therapy because what I have discovered is that more often then not I have failed at many if not all of them.

Often parents are told that their child doesn't put forth their best effort. In reality all we are doing is candy coating the fact that the student hasn't mastered the coarse content. As teachers we need to raise our expectation for student achievement and stop accepting sub-par work from our students. Then and only then will the student's grades improve.

Complaining about students in the faculty room does nothing to support the educational environment. Once you find other teachers who enjoy complaining about students, it becomes much easier to get into a routine of complaining to each other. This then makes it easier for other teachers to join right in. What usually goes along with this is a great deal of talk about how the student’s lack of achievement or bullying and behavioral problems in the classroom are caused by outside circumstances such as family or the child’s inter-generational tendencies (e.g. “I had his father as a student and I am not surprised. He is just like him”). The problem is that you take the focus off of yourself and the things you can do to be part of the solution. Plus, if you’re badmouthing your students, and other teachers are feeding right into it, you will walk back into your classroom with a greater dislike and additional reasons for having a negative attitude toward those students.

Yes, everybody does know. In this world of dysfunction, deviance and denial how could anyone not know? In the world of education there are things that go on that are so obvious that denying them is just embarrassing and we all should be red faced. There is an 800 pound gorilla in the room and he is being ignored and the path of least resistance is being taken. What are these things that educators, parents and society know but for some reason won’t discuss or won’t even admit? Let me share with you my thoughts on ten things that everybody knows.

“It doesn’t mean that much to me to mean that much to you.” Neil Young sang this verse in his song “Old Man.” Significant others. We all have them, and we all have had them: those that have impacted our life in such a way that we can still hear their voice calling us long after they have passed on. My dad was very significant in my life. He was hypercritical, I always sought his approval—it was tough to get. Sometimes I just wanted to give up. I mean, what’s the use in trying? I thought, “Can’t please the old man no matter what I do.

I choose to joust with no one regarding the condition of ADHD. My only goal with this essay is to give educators a clear view of the topic and help us all determine what is organic and what is truly learned behavior. We have medicalized education! Truthfully we have gotten to the point where meds are the first choice in treating behavior problems not the last. Medication has proven to help kids with ADHD or ODD. Talk to any therapist though and they will tell you that medication in combination with therapy is the plan that nets the best result. In schools meds are relied on too heavily, and need to be used in combination with solid discipline and effective consequences. Where were ADHD and ODD 40 years ago? They didn't exist or they weren't invented yet. Why, because kids with behavior problems were few and far between. Authority was respected by parents and students. When we discovered that disrespect is now the norm and not the exception, we began to create conditions to support the behavior. If a kid acts up today it is usually attributed to the fact that he doesn't take his medication consistently, when in reality he is not being disciplined effectively.

In education, we constantly have sought to improve the behavior and the academic achievement of our students. Almost every continuing education workshop or class is designed to help educators accomplish this. Even though this is valuable, these workshops fail to address the idea that it is the character of the teacher that will affect students’ success in the classroom and ultimately in life. Educators can fall into the trap of becoming so focused on the deficits of others, that they become less concerned about their own areas of personal growth. This podcast is designed to help educators to become more self-aware and give them strategies to personally strengthen themselves. The effect of becoming more self-actualized will help educators become more effective in their respective roles, and be much better equipped to meet the needs of their students.

With the onslaught of state mandated testing in so many school districts throughout the country teachers are still pressured to ensure that students achieve but the landscape has changed and hitting the bull’s eye is far more difficult than it was say forty years ago. The bull’s eye is tough to hit because teachers are now being asked to hit a moving target. The target keeps moving because the levels of disrespect, and irresponsibility pervades our schools and basically you can’t hit something that won’t sit still, keep quiet, come prepared, stay motivated, and who really has taken no ownership for their own education.
