If you've ever been mad at God for your physical suffering, if you are trying to find resources to help you battle chronic pain from a faith perspective, or if you're looking for stories that will inspire you to live a more abundant life, then this is the podcast for you. The Heal Podcast exists to help people discover God's healing for them through their physical pain, illness, or limitation. Each episode, Tera interviews someone who has fought or is fighting a physical battle and discovers how they have found a good God amidst it all.
Today on the show Dr. Alicia Britt Chole shares with us how disillusionment is not the negative idea we've often assumed it to be. Disillusionment means our illusions about God, us, and others are being taken away - and that's a good thing, y'all! But it can be a painful process. Often physical suffering throws us into the cycle of disillusionment, and Dr. Alicia shares about her own recurrences of cancer on the show today.
Like her books are some of the most cherished works of wisdom on my bookshelf now, so this episode is one of my favorites of all time. I hope you enjoy her as much as I did!

Tammy Comer lived with severe chronic illness for over a decade. She experienced its affects in her body, her mind, and in her walk with God. Through that journey, she learned what it truly meant to trust God. After such a long journey with illness, a few years ago God dramatically healed Tammy's body. In this episode, Tammy shares how God has met her in radical kindness and generosity through the healing part of her journey.
This is the second part of this interview; to listen to the first half of the episode, head to Episode 127 of this podcast.

We have one of our favorite guests back on the show for the second time! Author and speaker Vaneetha Risner recently released a fantastic Bible study about the questions we ask in suffering, loss, and longing. Join us today as I talk to her about why it’s good to ask questions in suffering, what her past and present experiences with profound suffering have taught her, and how the peace God has given her in the storm takes away her fear of the worst happening in the future. Get your notes ready - this is a quotable one that I think you’ll want to process for many days after you listen.

“Do you want Story 1 or Story 2?” When God asked Allen this question, he weighed his options. What did God mean? Should he cancel his surgery and see what God was inviting him into? Using the nodules in his throat as the backdrop, Allen takes us through the dramatic lesson God taught him about our stories with God. Plus, he put it all in an INCREDIBLE book called the Eden Option that you can find below. If you’re at an impasse in your suffering journey or you could use a little encouragement to press in again to what God has for you, this episode is for you. Check out this interview with author, speaker, and innovative coach Allen Arnold.

Why does Christ’s resurrection matter to you, right now, in your current circumstances? What does Christ’s resurrection really mean for His followers? And what does it look like for your own body to be resurrected with Christ one day? Jeff Brannon and I delve into these questions and more today as we discuss his book about the theology of resurrection. This is a good episode to nerd out on, but it is also an episode to give your faith the weighty grounding of the hope of redemption amidst your suffering.

Do you ever struggle to have the motivation to get out of bed in the morning. Well Alan Noble wrote a book about it, and he joins us today to talk about the burden of living. Don’t worry - it’s an encouraging conversation. We just talk honestly about the responsibility and gift of living, as well as how it is genuinely hard to view life in such a way sometimes. This is an honest conversation about mental illness, physical suffering, and just the plain ole difficulties of normal life. Heads up - we talk specifically about suicidal ideation for a bit in this conversation, so if that’s a trigger for you then maybe take a pass on this episode. I think it’s an important topic, so we try to have gentle grace for the conversation while also giving people hope who are in the darkest places.

Faith is a factor in healing, but there is complexity and nuance within that statement. One thing we do know is that Jesus told us to have the faith of a child. Lacy Finn Borgo wrote a book on just that, and today she shows us what the innocence and faith of children have to teach us amidst our suffering. Lacy also talks to us about her children’s book, All Will Be Well, which she wrote to help children process the loss of someone dear in their lives. This is a great episode that might surprise you! After nearly a decade of struggling through infertility, Laura Brandenburg still believes that even through the hardest chapters of our lives, God writes good endings. If you’ve been waiting on healing, waiting for God to show you His goodness amidst your pain, or just asking God to give you the patience to wait on His timing, then this is the episode for you. Laura shares the lessons her season of waiting taught her (they’re GOOD, y’all), as well as how her body was healed when her husband started praying specifically over her each night (but catch-that’s still not all there is to the story - you’ll have to listen to see what I mean). Plus, one of the great redemptions of her pain is her debut nonfiction book that comes out TODAY: Not Forgotten: Unraveling Questions of Faith and Fertility. Check it out below!

Dr. Richard Tran was on his way down a mountain biking trail when he accidentally took a much harder path than he had to. Since Dr. Tran is a chiropractor, he knew when he crashed that it wasn’t good. But becoming a Christian recently in his adult life, he took the accident as an opportunity to trust God’s provision more fully. Not only was God with him as he walked down the mountain, but God was also present through a horrible infection of his wounds and a nasty bout of pain-med related mental illness. I think you guys are going to love Dr. Tran’s episode - what a witness of faith and God’s grace through it all!

I am thrilled to introduce you today to one of the sweetest and on-fire women in my church community, Denise Moyer. She has a spirit that is always wanting more of whatever God has for her, and that shows up in the story she shares on the podcast today.
Denise and I were both present at a healing training our church put on in December of 2022. At this event, we were seeking to practice in a healthy way and low-risk environment what it looked like to ask God for miraculous healing. Denise shares in this episode how her shoulder was healed miraculously, not as a result of being prayed for at the event, but as a result of her own experience with God in the audience at the event. As of this interview, recorded four months after this event took place, Denise has been pain-free since that moment.

Today I got to talk with one of the best people I know, Gerald Griffin. We talk about what it looks like to view God as a good Father, to climb up into His lap and tell Him not only what you need, but also what you want, and then to be disappointed when He chooses something different for your life. In Gerald’s life, one season of trial came when he had many years of recurring sinusitis and horrible sinus infections. These sinus infections became debilitating, leaving him unable to breathe well and affecting his sleep and quality of life. Join us to discover what Gerald learned through this season of his life and how it applies to your current season today.

Hey friends! We're publishing a bonus episode today because Bonnie's book came out this month and because I want you all to have this resource before I reference it in my sermon for the Diamonds Conference in June. Enjoy!
Bonnie Gray is the author of multiple books including Sweet Like Jasmine, an ECPA 2022 Christian Book Award Finalist. She’s also a soul care coach and a podcast host. Today on the show she joins us to talk about her newest book, Breathe: 21 Days to Stress Less andTransform Chaos to Calm. Bonnie has recovered from PTSD and is passionate about helping people flourish through soul care with God. Through the first year of the pandemic, Bonnie’s hair started falling out, she got stress injuries to her hands, and she was facing chronic sleep deprivation and fibromyalgia. This book is what came out of her fight for freedom amidst her pain, and it was a freedom hard-earned and so beneficial to those of us who can learn from her journey. In our conversation today, Bonnie gives us loads of practical tips and the science behind them (get your notepads ready – it’s that kind of an episode!) to calm our minds amidst the stress that any kind of chronic pain or physical limitation brings into our lives.

Whatever kind of pain you’re in today, I’m guessing that you’ve either cried a lot of tears or you’ve wanted to. That’s why I brought on author S.A. Morrison to talk about the theology behind our tears. What does it look like to embody a healthy spiritual discipline of tears amidst our daily trials? Sarah shows us how when we choose to embrace the companion of tears in our journeys of suffering and hope, they both bring us closer to God and closer to the human experience we were made to have. Presbyterian minister Marjorie Thompson joins us today to talk to us about courage, hope, and curiosity amidst our pain and grief. How do we have courage when facing loss? How do we not become fearful when we are brave enough to become curious about our pain? We talk about these questions as well as themes like care versus cure in Marjorie’s book, Courage for Caregivers. In the book, Marjorie builds on the work of her spiritual mentor, Henri J.M. Nouwen, to address the demanding physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges of caregiving and care receiving, while also illuminating the gifts each can bring into our lives. Today we chat with author, lyricist, and screenwriter Douglas Kaine McKelvey on the second volume of his books Every Moment Holy: Death, Grief, and Hope. But in case you think this conversation is about nothing but grief and death and loss, it’s actually infused with joy. That’s really the thread of our whole interview today – how joy and sorrow are intertwined, how we can hold them both and experience them both, sometimes back-to-back, how we can mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15), and how we can walk in the maturity of growth in Christ to be able to experience both joy and sorrow throughout the trials and everyday happenings of our lives. For even amidst hardship, pain, and confusion, the rock-hard truth of God’s goodness shines through, making every moment holy.

Jessie Pick has been healed. She survived a death sentence of an aggressive, cancerous brain tumor that only has a 0.004% survival rate. God moved mountains and provided for her through the journey in ways that she can hardly believe. But even in healing, there is complexity. What do you do with survivor’s guilt? How do you accept God’s extravagant goodness with odds like Jessie beat? How do you not live in the fear of recurrence when so much of what you do daily has to do with keeping the cancer from returning? In Michele Cushatt's first book, her memoir Undone, she talks about her journey with all the unexpected events of her life: divorce, blended families, cancer, and more. But the story didn’t end where her first book did! She’s lived a lot more life, has now lived with the constant threat of cancer hanging over her shoulder for 12 years, and has survived two more battles with recurring cancer.
Michele joins us today on the podcast, even missing 2/3 of her tongue from operations and dealing with the pain of swallowing and speaking as she still deals with the effects of the radiation she received from her chest up to her mouth, to pour encouragement and truth into us. We talk about some Bible passages and how they show us truth about who God is amidst our suffering, how Michele finds more comfort in a God who is mysterious than a God she could fully understand in her suffering, and what it looks like to walk in trust and faith instead of using worry as a means of control.

After becoming a victim to sexual abuse when she was six or seven years old, enduring multiple instances of abuse and assault as time went on, and then becoming a victim of rape as a teenager, Grace found herself in her 20s isolated by a trafficker and alone as a single mom in India. Driven to despair, she almost committed suicide. Miraculously, God spoke to her that both she and her daughter belonged to him, and that their lives were not their own.
The psychological, emotional, and physical stress and abuse Grace endured led to all kinds of health problems. At an early age, her immune system became compromised from the stress, leading her to be sick all the time. Then she developed chronic headaches that became full-blown migraines. Eventually, all the stress became fibromyalgia, with unexplainable pain all over her body. After experiencing chest pains that intensified to the point where she could barely breathe, Grace finally visited a doctor, who told her that without rest and help, she would leave her daughter an orphan within six months.

Ever wondered what God’s purpose could be in your suffering? Have you ever thought about at least 12 different perspectives for suffering? Our guest today, Dr. Brian Gregg, has. In fact, he’s written a whole book about it, and he shares his insights with us today. I can’t speak more highly of how important I think his book and this conversation is for us if we are to think of suffering in a biblical, holistic way.

Daniel and Kelly Crawford lost their son to a life-limiting diagnosis a few days after his birth. Like Hebrews 11:4 says, Abel still speaks, even though he is no longer on earth. His parents are making sure of that through Abel Speaks, an organization they founded to support parents carrying children with life-limiting diagnoses. Join Daniel, Kelly, and me today as we talk about their journey, their combination of joy and sorrow through the events during and after their pregnancy wth Abel, and what it means to know God more while understanding Him less. In the middle of the pandemic, Mike Fennema was thrown off his mountain bike and landed on his head. Fighting through the recovery and new limitations of quadriplegia, Mike had to do it all in isolation. For over 100 days, he could not see his wife or children except through a fence six feet apart. Today we talk about what Mike has learned about isolation, identity, and what part these play in our healing.

Denise was on her way home on December 23. 2011, when she stopped to help a family stuck on the side of the road. As she was helping them, a car lost control on the ice, crushing Denise between their car and her car. After losing more than the total amount of blood in her body, there were multiple instances where Denise lost her heartbeat or stopped breathing. During one of these instances, Denise saw a vision of her son, Kody, who had passed away in a car accident two years prior. Today she shares about this experience, her recovery after the accident, and what life looks like for her now as an amputee and blood donor advocate. Kevan Chandler's friends carried him through Europe. Yes, literally - in a backpack. Diagnosed with SMA when he was young, Kevan grew up in a family that empowered him to dream of a unique life with his disability. His life experiences, combined with a personal relationship with Jesus, led him to try something crazy when he left his wheelchair behind and let a bunch of his musician friends carry him on their backs for three weeks. The result: a book, lessons innumerable, a documentary, strengthened relationships with friends and God, a nonprofit, and a fresh perspective that will leave you feeling encouraged and inspired today. The most dreaded phrase you can receive from a doctor or a friend: “it’s all in your head.” Many people who have walked through the fires of physical pain have experienced the sinking feeling in their stomachs when someone suggests that their pain is in their head, because it feels like the person is accusing them of making up their pain; it feels like their pain is invalidated. Since our goal at Heal is to provide a holistic view of pain and healing, it would be as unfair to say that your pain is not real as it would be to suggest that physical pain never has mental and emotional roots to it. God designed our bodies to be interconnected, and often the unconscious lies we believe have huge impacts on our physical health.
Joelle Jensen has experienced this firsthand, and I cannot wait for you to hear her testimony. After 25 years of chronic back pain, a technique addressing her anxieties and internal pressures completely relieved her pain. Considering the gospel, it makes total sense that God could both validate Joelle’s pain and use a modern technique to heal her of it. Y’all. This episode is gold. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Life is almost never purely bad or purely good, purely grief-filled or purely joy-filled, purely redeemed or purely irredeemable. We must learn to let God meet us in the middle, in that place of wrestling where we hold both the trials and the triumphs of this life at the same time. Carleigh Joyce is learning how to hold both pain and joy, longing and contentment, grieving and pushing forward as she enters the fifth year of her pain journey. After a C section left her in more pain than she thought possible, Carleigh discovered nerve issues that have been plaguing her ever since. Not only did her pain lead her to a deeper relationship with Christ, but her pain causes her to look to God daily. If you're in need of that daily encouragement for the battle of pain today, this episode is for you.

One of one people will die - it's the ultimate statistic. But have you ever thought of death as a spiritual discipline? It wasn't that long ago that Christians viewed death as an art, an integral crowning piece of their journeys here on earth. In Rob Moll's book, The Art of Dying, he explored this lost art in profound ways. Then ten years after writing his book, Rob tragically passed away in a hiking accident. His widow, Clarrissa Moll, joins us today to talk to us about her grief process, how death enlightens the Christian journey, and how we can accept our suffering while looking to the future with hope.

Lore Ferguson Wilbert vulnerably shares parts of her doubts and questions through her journey, including an ectopic pregnancy, a current struggle she's facing, and her journey through miscarriages. Lore is the author of Handle with Care, a book on the ministry of touch. Touch is not talked about much in our healing journeys, and Lore shares today why this may be the case and how we can learn from how Jesus touched and was touched. This is an episode to listen with a notepad! I believe her wisdom is going to blow your socks off in a new way. Enjoy!

Ellie Sanazaro and her husband were told that their daughter would be born with a disability. While that ended up being false, God had stirred up such a passion in their hearts for parenting a child with disabilities that they ended up adopting a son with Down Syndrome. That process took quite a bit longer than the sentence shows, but we delve into more of the process in the interview. Now, Ellie is the author of a children's book I think everyone should have on their shelf: Image Bearer, a book on the biblical view of disability. The illustrations are of real kids who have different physical differences, and the book is gorgeous! I can't help but believe that if we got these resources into our children's minds, perhaps we could better educate our world on inclusion and our true identities in Christ. Our British brother and sister Jonny and Janna Ivey join us to talk about one of the most heartbreaking subjects in our earthly existence: baby loss. In their new book, Silent Cries, they delve into the depths of their own wounds in order to bring healing to the wounds of others. This is not a pretty episode about a pretty topic, but it's raw, real, and shows the goodness of God in a way that only true sorrow and His faithfulness in the midst of it can. We also address some hard questions and try to model that it's okay to ask these things we rarely have answers for, so if you like the toughies, this episode is for you!

On April 19, 1995, Amy Downs was a self-described "lazy college dropout." But 26 years ago, her life changed forever when a bomb went off in the building she worked in, dropping her down three floors and leaving her upside down in her office chair for over six hours as rescue workers attempted to get her out. In those moments of waiting, Amy realized she had not lived her life the way she had wanted to up to that point. When she was rescued, she committed to changing her life, one step at a time. She went from flunking out of college to becoming the CEO of her company, she lost over 200 pounds and completed an Ironman Triathlon, she chose to become a mom, and now she has written an incredible memoir of her journey, Hope is a Verb: My Journey of Impossible Transformation. Carley and Mark DenBoer join us today to talk about their lives and how they seek to glorify God amidst their marriage with chronic pain. After a biking accident in high school, Mark has had an unimaginable headache that never leaves. Carley has been diagnosed with both lupus and severe depressive disorder. While we talk about fun parts of their lives and I think you will fall in love with their personalities, we do get into a long conversation about suicidal ideation, as well. This is a large part of many people's lives who live in chronic pain, so our hope is that you can relate to either Carley or Mark in their specific type of suicidal thoughts they have experienced and that this podcast enables you to seek help and thrive amidst your pain. Please share this episode with anyone you feel would be uplifted by its message!

In this episode, architect Rick Archer joins us to talk about the different kinds of pain and healing he has experienced in his life. We talk about a miraculous healing he experienced that lasted over 20 years, then the ensuing back surgery that came about when the pain returned. We also talk about a gym accident he had that left him with over 100 doctor appointments and reconstructive procedures to his face. Amidst it all we question what pain is with God, what it is without Him, and what our journeys look like with Him through it all.

-Scriptures about Adam are from Romans 5:12-21
-1 Corinthians 12:21-26 “The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

Since birth, a tumor had been growing on the inside of Jessica's chest. Because of its placement, instead of becoming visible, it grew until it took up the cavity where her lung should have been. After a massive surgery to remove the football-sized tumor, Jessica has still dealt with chronic pain and compensation problems as she has become a professional beach volleyball player. In the matter of three months, Elijah lost two of his greatest passions: playing piano and bodybuilding. A nerve disorder flared up in the finale of his final performance as a music major in college that prevented him from playing correctly (he still has the nerve disorder today, over ten years later). A few months later, he blew out his rotator cuff, losing bodybuilding, as well. In this episode, we talk about where God is when you have a disorder or pain that takes away passions that God designed you with in the first place. In addition, we talk about another incident where Elijah's torn hamstrings were miraculously healed. If God can heal one part of our bodies miraculously, why wouldn't He heal the other parts? Haven Faith Shepherd lives life with no legs, but she says if that's the worst thing she has going on in her life, it's not that big of a deal. Even though her story has an intense beginning, God has claimed her as His own from the start, and she lives a full and vibrant life of redemption. Born in Vietnam as the result of an affair, her biological parents believed the only way for them to be together was to commit suicide as a family. Strapping bombs to themselves and holding Haven, the bombs exploded and Haven was thrown 25 feet away, losing her legs in the process. An American family later saw her in an orphanage and knew she was meant to be a part of her family. Growing up in the US, Haven now is a part of Team USA for swimming and is a Paralympic hopeful for 2021. Listen in and be encouraged that no trauma is beyond God's reach and His goodness overshadows what we often perceive with the naked eye.
