Message Series: Sermons from Spotify

Music. It’s everywhere. We listen to it in the car, the store, the stadium, as well as work and home. And, whether it’s at a live concert or through your Air Pods, we connect with music. It acts as a soundtrack to our lives. We all have songs that take us back, make us remember a particular moment or feeling. They move us. And we all have lyrics that have spoken to us.

That got us thinking? How does God use music in our faith? Do songs — not just worship songs, but the songs we listen to on the radio or Spotify — move us closer to God? Does God speak to us those lyrics? That’s what this series is about… Finding God in music.

Message Series: Parenthood

This four-week message series explores what God's Word has to say about… well, parenthood. Whether they're bawling, crawling, walking, talking, or just driving you crazy, kids are a gift from God. And scripture provides us with insight and guidance on how to raise them to be full of faith and focused on God, rather than leaving you frazzled, frustrated, or fatigued.

We're celebrating an outpouring of God's promises today: six dedications and baptisms! Jesus was dedicated in the Temple when he was a newborn, so Christian parents often choose this special prayer time as the first church for their young children. Baptism, meanwhile, is the formal Christian entrance rite into the family of Jesus Christ--at any age, according to Scripture. So we celebrate both joyfully! Our next scheduled dedication/baptism date is Sunday, January 29, 2023.

Ask the Pastors

Abraham Joshua Hesche, a well-known rabbi, once said, “We are closer to God when we are asking questions than when we think we have the answers.” And that’s the inspiration behind Ask the Pastors. Pastor Dan and Chris spend the morning attempting to answer your questions about life, faith, scripture, theology, or the church. (These questions were submitted by text.)

Message Series: We Believe In…

"We Believe In" in a four-week message series examining The Apostles' Creed. You might be thinking, "It's 2022. There's so much happening in the world. And you want to talk about a 1500-year-old creed?!" We get it. Creeds sound ancient and don't seem relevant. In this series, we are going to explore how they might be both… and might be exactly what our world needs right now.

It's 2022. We get most things by email… bills, updates, statements, ads for that online store you used once back in 2017. But every so often, you open the mailbox — the real mailbox — and find… a greeting card.

Those cards convey a sentiment that an email or a direct message doesn't. You know this message matters.

So at Kaw Prairie, we started asking, "What are the greeting cards we send and receive in our faith? What are the messages we are sharing?" Maybe it's Get Well Soon, Happy Mother's Day, Congratulations, Confirmation Sunday, or Thank You. Join us throughout May as we explore each of these sentiments.

Perfectly Imperfect | Build Your Character

February 27, 2022 | Pastor Dan

I'm not perfect. You're not perfect. Nobody's perfect. (Not even Ryan Reynolds.) And no relationship is perfect, no matter how badly we want it to be. Whether it's with a friend, a family member, someone we're dating, or someone we're married to, relationships are imperfect. But that doesn't mean we can't work to make them better. Throughout this four-week series, we are going to be discussing what it means to be Perfectly Imperfect.

Series Description

This past year, we overheard someone talking about how boring the book of Leviticus is and how difficult it would be to do a message series based on it. Never one to shy away from a good dare, we accepted the challenge and got to work.

But the book of Leviticus isn't just challenging to preach, it's challenging to live. However, when we put certain practical teachings into practice, it can make a profound impact in our lives and in the world around us.

Join us as we accept the challenges found in this sometimes hard-to-read book of the Bible.

In high school, my cross country coach had a rule… You were never allowed to look back. He said looking back meant you were running someone else's race, not your own. This same concept can be found in Scripture — in both the Old and New Testaments. During this message, Pastor Chris prepares us for 2022 by taking a look at what it means to forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

An Advent sermon series is usually designed to prepare our hearts for Christmas: the arrival of the Christ Child Jesus. Often it’s four Sundays on different Hebrew prophecies in the Bible that point to Jesus. Sometimes it’s more topical, like the main characters in the birth narratives, or it’s modern, like Christmas movies and a “Christmas truth” each of them might illustrate.

This year, however, Chris and I wanted to do something different for Advent — and maybe more useful for understanding and following Jesus. Since Advent is the beginning of the church year, we’re going to look at the beginning — the first chapter — of each of the four Gospels, and show just how important those first verses are in understanding the meaning of Christmas.

That's what this series is all about. During this five-week series, we're going to talk about the things we aren't supposed to talk about. We are going to discuss topics that are rarely discussed about at church — anxiety, suicide, divorce, special needs, and ageism.

This series examines our responsibility to our neighbors. The term “neighborhood watch” often evokes a fear-based mentality — We must watch over our neighborhood because others are out to get us! Ashley Masoni Huber experienced leader in healthcare who is driven to lead by bringing people together to discover ways of healing and caring for patients and loved ones as they cope during difficult times.

When Jesus appeared on the scene more than 2,000 years ago, he brought with him the ability to connect heaven and earth. Some liken this holy deliverance to that of a cosmic blast. This mysterious appearance of our King reminds us that the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Jesus is still breaking down our old paradigms and because of that we can burst with joy today!

The world is full of cliches… and so is the church. There are things we say over and over again. But should we? What if they are wrong, contain bad theology, or prevent us from growing in our faith? What if they drive God crazy? In this series, we take a look at four over-used phrases in Christianity — God helps those who help themselves, everything happens for a reason, God won't give you more than you can handle, and love the sinner, hate the sin — and break down why they might not be as helpful as they sound.

In our November series — Make More Stories — Pastor Dan’s leads us through a series of three big questions of the three big partners in a joyful, difference-making personal life: Jesus, your local church, and you.

Nov 8 — What’s the story with Jesus… really?

Nov 15 — What’s the story with our church… honestly?

Nov 22 — What story do I want for my life… finally?

Some stories we hear are meant to entertain us, some to distract us, and some to put our kids to sleep at night. But the purpose of the most important stories, especially those in Scripture — is to give us clarity.

Your Saints Day

All Saints Day (Pastor Dan) | November 1, 2020

DESCRIPTION

In Romans, Paul writes, "To all God’s beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." When we hear the word "saint", we often think of stained glass windows or heroes like Mother Teresa, but when the Bible uses the word, it's actually referring to all believers.

We are all saints. Of course, there are people in each of our lives who have gone above and beyond, who have made a lasting impact. This year, on All Saints Day, we want to honor them.

The Monster We Become

Week 4 of 4 - Zombies (Pastor Chris)

DESCRIPTION

It's that time of year… Carving pumpkins, hanging spider webs, and, of course, picking out a costume. Halloween is an opportunity to act and look scarier than we really are. We can become the monster of our choice. But if we aren't careful, we can change in ways that go beyond putting on a mask. We live in a world that can often bring out the worst in us. That's what this series is about.

We are going to take a look at the monsters we become. Using classic Halloween monsters like the vampire, ghost, werewolf, and zombie, we are exploring four parables of Jesus, seeing how we can become selfish, stuck in the past, unpredictable, or even the walking dead.

Unmute: Hearing God's Voice

Week 3 of 3 - Is It Me? (Pastor Dan)

DESCRIPTION

"You're on mute!" might be the unofficial slogan of 2020. If you've ever been on a Zoom call this year, you've probably said or heard these words. But what happens when we put God on mute? As Christians, we want to do God's will, but we often find ourselves unable to hear God's voice. Not because God isn't speaking, but because we aren't listening. Too often, we put God on mute. In this series, we will explore what it means to unmute God and hear God's voice.

Acting Like the Early Church in 2020

Week 4 of 4 - New People (Pastor Chris)

DESCRIPTION

We all know what church looks like. Some churches look different than others, but we can usually spot a church when we see one. Well, we could. Now that we are living in the age of the Coronavirus — where we can no longer meet at the same place at the same time, sing the same songs, have the same ministries and comforts, and listen to the same message — we are forced to ask ourselves…

"What is church? What does church look like?"

That's the question we are hoping to answer in this message series. We are going to take a look at the book of Acts, the second chapter, where it all started, where the church began. And we are going to challenges ourselves to start acting like the early church in 2020.

Join us as we discover what it means to be the church… even when we can't be at the church.

What Do We Do With the Old Testament?

Week 4 of 4 - A New Approach (Pastor Dan)

"What do we do with the Old Testament?" This is a question many of us have asked. So many times, we open our Bibles to the Old Testament and read stories full of violence and judgement, stories full of laws and requirements, stories that feel disconnected from what we read in the New Testament. What does faith look like when you are stuck at home? That's a question many of us are asking right now. Thankfully, the Bible deals with this very issue. Towards the end of Paul's missionary journeys around the world, he found himself under house arrest. He could no longer go out and practice his faith like he had before.

But that didn't stop him from growing closer to God and changing lives with Jesus' love. In fact, it was during this season that he wrote some of his most well-known writings. This four-week series will take a look at the four chapters in the book of Philippians — a book he quote in quarantine.

A student in our youth group once said, "My relationship goal? I want to be a cute old couple. You know, the couple you see sitting on the bench in the park and can't help but to say aww? Like that."

She's not alone. Most of us want to be a cute old couple. We want to meet someone, fall in love, and stay together. We want to grow closer as we grow older.

But ask anyone who has been married for more than 48 hours and they will tell you that it's not that easy. All relationships — whether it's a close friend, family member, or soulmate — take work. They are full of ups and downs, good times and bad times. There are days when you couldn't be any more in love and there are days when you can't even decide where to eat.

So we want to talk to the experts. Throughout the month of February, we are going to be interviewing four cute old couples — couples who have put in the work and stayed together for 40+ years. These interviews will be accompanied by a study of one of the most famous relationship passages in the Bible — 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.

Join us as we laugh, learn, and… of course, say aww.

Pastor Dan and Chris will share songs from four decades — the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s — and discuss how God has used them in our faith.

(These questions were submitted by text and on our website.)

It’s Advent — a season of waiting and preparing before celebrating Christmas. During this time, we focus our hearts and minds on Christ. At the risk of sounding cliche, we stop and remember the reason for the season.

Which is easier said than done. The world around us is moving faster and faster, barreling towards Christmas morning. Whether we are waiting in line for a Black Friday sale or rushing into the mall for a last-minute stocking stuffer, it's a hectic month that can often leave us tired, stressed, and distracted.

It's easy to forget what this season is really about.

That's why we are are going to spend the month exploring the names of Jesus in scripture. Each day, there will be a new name and scripture reading. These will help keep us focused on what really matters — the birth of our Savior.

(For families, each daily scripture reading matches up with the devotional being handed out in KP Sprouts, KP Kids, and Bridge!)

Want to receive daily text messages containing that day's name and scripture? Text "advent" to 913-800-8056.
