Talk on 2000 is a Talk Show that tackles the biggest stories of the day speaking to people behind the stories and connecting with SABC journalists on the top stories. The show also tackles topics of human and national importance like mining, education, health, land, rural development, job creation, parliamentary education and African politics focusing mostly on the subject of peace and security around the continent.

➢ The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has released a report titled Economic Empowerment for the Disadvantaged – A Better Way to Empower South Africa’s Poor. The report makes the case for a thorough-going reform of the country’s approach to empowerment. It further addresses the profound failures of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) in overcoming persisting disadvantages that continue to lock millions of people, particularly black South Africans, out of the formal economy. Tonight, we’ll look at this report in detail by speaking to a representative from the IRR.
Yesterday 11 people were shot dead in KZN while traveling in a taxi from a funeral to Johannesburg. Police are now investigating the matter as an incident of taxi violence. The victims were allegedly from a taxi association in Gauteng and had come to attend the funeral of one of their members. To speak to us more about what is being done to solve this heinous crime we are joined on the line by the spokesperson of the South African Police Services (SAPS), Brigadier Vish Naidoo.
23 July 2018 ➢ The ANC in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal held their elective conferences over the weekend. In Gauteng around 1244 out of a total of 1256 voting ANC delegates elected Premier David Makhura as the province chairperson while Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi was elected as his deputy. In KZN Sihle Zikalala retained his position as the province chairperson while Mike Mabuyakhulu beat Willies Mchunu to become the deputy chairperson. This evening we’ll speak to political analyst, Professor Andre Duvenage about what he makes of the outcomes of the two conferences.
Ahead of the BRICS Summit taking place next week from the 25th to the 27th of July, research company, Plus 94’s CEO Sifisio Falala has expressed his sentiments around BRICS and its effectiveness for businesses in South Africa. He argues that at present South Africa’s inclusion in BRICS means absolutely nothing to South African businesses.
This evening in our Africa Talks segment this evening we’ll look at the widely held perception about African leadership and how corrupt it is. What is this sentiment based on and how true is it? Ntate Izak Khomo who is programmes producer at Channel Africa and our Africa Talks expert joins us now in studio for this conversation.
Today while speaking at the Nelson Mandela Centenary Dialogue, former First Lady Graça Machel said that young people should redesign the systems that were created by colonialism. The big question is, how should youth go about doing this and is this an easy task? Our personality of the week tonight is 27 years old Jack Mthembu who is founder and chief executive of First One Adventures and The Entrepreneurs Club. Gift graduated with a degree in chartered accountancy from North West University (NWU) and worked for only six weeks for a consulting firm before quitting his first job to focus on entrepreneurship.
In our Money Matters feature we’ll look at the notion of black tax, what it means and how it’s understood by different sectors of the community. John Manyike who is head of financial education at Old Mutual joins us now in studio for this conversation.
In our property matters feature this evening we’ll look at how agents determine the amount of a deposit paid by a tenant for a property they will be renting. We’ll also look at what the deposit is used for as well as when it should be refunded when a tenant vacates the property. Dineo Molomo of Dineo Properties joins us in studio for this conversation.
This evening in our Africa Talks segment we’ll look at the announcement by the Department of basic education to possibly make history compulsory in schools following the recommendation by a task team that was looking into of feasibility of implementing this. According to the South African Democratic Teachers Union, local history should be taught to students to help build a united nation. Ntate Izak Khomo joins us now in studio to look at this in detail.

Topic: Personality of the week: He is the former statistician general at Stats SA. Dr Lehohla's contract at Stats SA came to an end in October. He was with Stats SA for 34 years and at the helm for 17 years making him the longest-serving statistician-general in the country's history since the demise of apartheid. He managed the census in Bophuthatswana in 1985 and 1991 and was responsible for directing the South African census in 1996.

Topic: The High Court in Johannesburg recently heard a case that was brought forward by The Organisation for Religious Education and Democracy (Ogod) which wants the court to declare the religion policy of 6 schools unconstitutional. The Federation of Governing Bodies for South African Schools (Fedsas) which represents the schools has however stated that religion in schools exposes children to good moral values which they would not have learnt otherwise. opic: Personality of the Week- His name is Bulelani Balabala, he is an entrepreneur, advisor and speaker and he is our personality of the week this evening. Last month he walked away with an entrepreneurship award at the NYDA’s 2nd annual South African Youth Awards. Bulelani started his business at the tender age of 18 in his mother’s garage without any funding and today the business has created employment for a number of young people in his township. He also started the Township Entrepreneurs Alliance (TEA) which is an NPO that is aimed at developing township entrepreneurs and promoting entrepreneurship in township schools. This initiative has impacted over 3000 young entrepreneurs in the area since its inception.
Topic:Following the current political activities it came as no surprise when ratings agency S&P downgraded South Africa to junk status. A decision which will hurt the pockets of South Africans. We speak to Chief Economist at Investment Solutions, Lesiba Mothata about the implications of the downgrade.
Topic: Apartheid Stalwart and one of the Rivonia trialists, Ahmed Kathrada was today laid to rest in a manner which most described as befitting for the man who contributed to South Africa’s liberation. As we continue to remember his life, we speak to Sahm Venter who wrote a book titled, ‘Conversations with a Gentle Soul’ which has its origins in a series of discussions between the Apartheid hero and herself about his opinions, encounters and experiences.

Topic: Recently the South African Revenue Services (SARS) has been receiving complaints from taxpayers about outstanding tax refunds as well as withholding payment of refunds. SARS has also established that refund fraud, particularly in the area of VAT and Personal Income Tax refunds, has become a huge challenge. To address this perception as well as explain the process of tax refunds, we are joined by Mark Kingon who is the Group Executive for Business and Individual Tax Relationship Management at SARS.
Topic: His passion lies in mentorship and is the second South African to be awarded the Academic Fellowship by the International Accounting Standards Board for 2017/18 in London. His name is Khaya Sithole and he’s our personality of the week. Khaya is also a mentor on the Shanduka Black Umbrellas Programme, whereby he’s responsible for the mentorship of start-up businesses and evaluating business plans submitted to the organisation. In 2014 he was commissioned by the University of Cape Town to participate in the Bukela Ufunde programme, which provides Financial Reporting lectures in African Languages to all students across the country.

The announcement has been received with negative feedback with some ANC members in the province criticizing the decision. Media reports have indicated that some Gambian citizens have started to flee the country ahead of the presidential inauguration, this in fear of a possible war break out in the country. This comes after current president Yahyah Jammeh’s refusal to step down from his position, as he was defeated in the elections last month by president-elect Adama Barrow. It has also been reported that Barrow is currently in Senegal for safety reasons. According to a report issued by the Institute of Race Relations, South Africa has made some progress in areas such as the economy, crime, education, healthcare and living standards since 1994. The report was released today in light of the current negative climate the country is operating under as a way of reminding South Africans that there’s a lot that has gone right post apartheid. Topic: A look at Investigative journalist Paul McNally’s book titled, The Street which is a true story about the two years that he spent installed behind the tinted glass mirror of a sound system shop on Ontdekkers Rd, alongside a guy whose mission in life was to record the police receiving about 300 bribes on average a month from the drug dealers they were protecting.
A 3 years old investigation by a Switzerland-based environmental and economic group called Public Eye has revealed that European companies are using an illegal strategy of selling dirty fuel to African countries as a way of maximizing profits. It is said that Africa is seen as a dumping zone of certain products of poor quality including medicine for example. our Africa Talk expert, Ntate Izak Khomo talks to us about the seriousness of this practice and why Europeans see Africa as an easy target of exploitation?
Our personality of the week is Dr Umar Johnson who is a psychologist and an expert on helping schools and parents modify challenging behaviours that can ultimately lead to disorder diagnoses in Black Boys. He speaks largely to issues pertaining to black people, their mentality and challenges they face. He is currently on tour in South Africa promoting some of his work and exposing the South African audience to his teachings.
Our personality of the week is Bridget Edwards who describes herself an Emotional Change Catalyst. She spent the greater part of 25 years studying and practicing health and wellness modalities, including metaphysics. Bridget’s life was at some point defined by stress which included surviving a fatal illness where she practically lost everything. She however, didn’t let this define her life as she went on to use her experiences to help others excel beyond their personal boundaries or limitations.
Topic: Personality of the week: Rahid Lanie who is an internationally acclaimed composer, arranger, pianist, producer and recording artist. Rashid is well-known not only for his musical accomplishments, but also for his political activism in the fight against Apartheid in South Africa. Through his music he has been able to address social issues. For example in 1992 he was commissioned to write “The People Want Mandela”, a song celebrating Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. He has accomplished so much and has always been vocal about the interests of musicians. He has spoken at the United Nations on behalf of South African musicians, and has served as Vice-President of the South African Musicians’ Alliance.
Topic: Wendy Knowler speaks to us about access to recorded phone calls between companies and consumers, specifically the ones in which consumers agree to contract with them or buy their products. Despite the fact that these recordings take the place of a written contract when deals are concluded over the phone, many companies are very reluctant to give consumers access to the recordings when there's a dispute over what was said or agreed to in those conversations, which according Wendy is grossly unfair, and, happily, illegal.

She recently received the audit partner of the year award at the African Women Chartered Accountants ‘Woman of Substance Awards.’ The award is given to exceptional women who play a significant role in the uplifting of black women and have demonstrated quality and successful leadership in areas of governance and business to realise gender parity. Shirley speaks about her career journey and some of her successes and challenges over the years as a female leader.

Editor and author Lerato Tshabala speaks to us about her much spoken about book titled "The way I See It: the musings of a black woman in a rainbow nation." An extract of her book appeared in the Sunday Times recently and resulted in negative feedback from many black people on social media who felt that she was ridiculing the black race. But she has come out to say that she was misunderstood because the extract in which she gives reasons why she prefers to hire a person with blue eyes (i.e. White person) and talks about the inefficiency of black service providers was taken out of context. Lerato tells us what he was trying to communicate with this book.
Topic: Bonteheuwel in the Western Cape has witnessed two incidences believed to be related to gang violence. Yesterday a Metrorail driver was shot dead at Netreg station which is located in a gang-infested area. Another incident involves the killing of 26 year old Anwar Fortune who was shot 3 times in the head while boarding a taxi with his girlfriend and 2 year old son this past Saturday. Graham Lindhorst who is part of the Bishop Lavies Community Policing Forum in Bonteheuwel as well as Johann Kikillus who is a counselor at Soteria Ministries and community leader in Ocean View, which is one of the other areas in the Western Cape that is also infested with the issue of gang related violence speak to us more about this issue.
Topic: According to a recent Old Mutual Savings and Investment Monitor survey released recently, about 66% of households in the country are struggling with financial debt which has forced them to adjust their lifestyles and cut down on living expenses. The survey looked at the shift in financial attitudes and behaviour of South Africa’s working metropolitan population. Gerald Mwandiambira who is Old Mutual’s business partner and acting CEO of the South African Savings Institute (SASI) speaks to us more about this survey.

In the month of June Queen Elizabeth the 2nd, bestowed her with the Queen's Young Leaders Award for the work that she does in supporting refugees, young people and children which HIV/AIDS and victims of abuse. The award is given to young individuals from 45 different Commonwealth countries who have taken the lead in transforming the lives of others and making a lasting difference.
With so many cultures and tribes that make up South Africa, is the idea of a unified South African identity a possibility or is it a far-fetched dream due to the diversity of cultures found in the country? Why is it that post 1994 we still find intolerance against other races, cultures and tribes? Cultural expert and founder of the Umsamo African Institute, Dr Velaphi Mkhize speaks to us more about this issue.

South Africa’s drug problem is a serious one and even affects young people. In townships, a drug known as Nyaope is used by young people who end up committing all sorts of crimes in order to get the next fix. Clara Monnakgotla who is a community development manager at the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) speaks to us more about this issue.

Topic: Personality of the week: Our personality of the week is 23 years old Nkosi Moremoholo who published a book called I pray that I never die Broke, which is an inspirational self-help book on how to achieve greatness. Nkosi lost his parents at a very young age and as a result grew up without knowing who they were. He learned how to survive under tough conditions while growing up in poverty and was homeless for a couple of years before turning his life around, going on to get a degree in education science and founding companies of his own.
Africa Talk: Looking at different monarchies that exist on the African continent as well as the much debated subject of land ownership by different tribes and monarchies on the African continent and particularly in South Africa.
Topic: Not having a job can lead to desperation and unfortunately many people have fallen prey to scams and false promises on possible job offers. Mosima Selekisho who is a director at Talent Africa talks to us more about how people can go about looking for employment, what you need to do when applying for a job, preparing for an interview as well as some learnerships and internships offered by some companies.
Topic: Gauteng and the Western Cape hold the highest position when it comes to economic status when compared to the rest of other provinces. This is according to an in depth comparative study released by the South African Institute of Race Relations recently. This inevitably means that the two province end up having to carry the rest of the other provinces. The study compared all 9 provinces in the country in terms of demographics, economic status, health, crime and security, living conditions and education. Topic: Our personality of the week is shepherd boy, Dr Jongi Klaas. He taught at Rhodes University and later joined the South African government as an expert to the United Nations Security Council in New York. Currently he is working as a South African Diplomat in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He recently published a book called Memoirs of a relentless pursuit which is a gripping South African story projected through the life of a young African boy from the rural outskirts of the Eastern Cape Province. The boy’s life is a representation of hardships versus triumphs, hopelessness versus determination and a profound sense of positive drive.

Topic: the department of basic education's budget vote for the year: The basic education department has made some progress but certain challenges still persist in certain districts. One of the biggest challenges for the department this year will be to resolve the issue of the schools which were burned in Vuwani during social demonstrations. Topic: Personality of the week: Our personality of the week is Mathatha Tsedu, a media veteran who is currently the Executive Director of the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF). Mathatha has edited publications such as the City Press, Sunday Times, The Star and Sunday Independent. He recently received an honorary doctorate from the Western Cape University for the role he played in efforts to transform the media in a democratic South Africa.

Louise Turner who is the COO of the Breast Health Foundation and Nqobile Mazibuko who is an entrepreneur are both survivors of Breast cancer. Douglas grew up in a decent neighborhood but in a family that struggled financially and thus had to occasionally be fed and supported by his local church. He learned about public speaking while in High School and it is no surprise that after matric he joined the Toastmasters International- a public speaking group which resulted in him clinching the Southern Africa Championship title at the age of 20.

10 October 2015 - Topic: 16 Days of Activism is all about continuing to send out strong messages of no violence against women and child abuse. There are a number of organisations that were founded for communicating these types of messages beyond the 16 days that have been dedicated to show support against women and children who are abused. One such organisation is the N.Noordien Foundation (NNF) which is an established board of strong, educated and passionate women who are taking a stand against gender based violence and inequality. Innocent has been living with depression for the past 8 years and dropped out of college last year due to a lack of funds. However, this year he returned to college and has been honoured with the opportunity of being nominated for the SA Men of the year awards in the category of Youth Developer.
Topic: Personality of the week: Our personality of the week is Khudusela Pitje, CEO of New GX, which is a black owned investment company formed on strong entrepreneurial principals. Khudusela was born into an entrepreneurial family and guided at an early age by his late father HM Pitje. He started his entrepreneurship with a makeshift hair salon in Grahamstown while in high school at the age of seventeen. He recently won the 2015 Ernest and Young World Entrepreneur Award in the emerging category.
29 October 2015 - Topic: Personality of the week: Elinor Sisulu : a writer, human rights activist and political analyst. She was born in Harare, Zimbabwe in March 1958 and grew up mostly in Bulawayo. In 1994 she wrote an award winning children’s book about the first democratic elections in South Africa entitled The Day Gogo Went to Vote. The book has been recently selected by the Librarian’s Association of South Africa (LIASA) as one of the ten best books representing South African democracy.
Topic: South Africa has one of the highest unemployment rates in the world and the country still battles with this challenge as reflected in the recently released 3rd quarter labour force survey which shows that unemployment is up by 25.5% . Tonight in our YB20 feature we will engage with young people about what they think the possible solutions are to this problem and how they can contribute to solving it.

Professor David Bilchitz who is the University of Johannesburg Law Expert this month delivered his inaugural lecture titled Can fundamental Rights Bridge the Divide Between Ideal Justice and the South African Reality? Has government and universities denied students the right to access and quality education as a constitutional right?
Topic: Personality of the week Our Personality of the week is Bonang Mohale- Chairman and Vice President of Shell South Africa and former president of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA). Bonang spent four years at Wits Medical School and in the process he acquired Business and Management experience by spending ten years in the pharmaceutical industry progressing through various positions, including product management and new business development management. This opened up other avenues of opportunities for him.
Topic: Often young people are encouraged by government to find ways of running their own businesses and creating jobs. It is for this reason that organisations such as the NYDA were put into place to assist this process. However, operating a business as a young person in South Africa today has a number of challenges. In our YB20 feature this week the focus is on young people that are in the mainstream economy including some of the issues they are faced with.
Topic: The second Stan Nkosi annual lecture took place last week Thursday and the African Union (AU) commission chairwoman, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma delivered the key note address. Stan Nkosi was an anti-apartheid campaigner and businessman who believed that education is the true liberator.
Topic: KZN has the 3rd highest poverty measures in the country according to the 2011 census. The people affected by poverty are in areas like Maphumulo, Nkandla, Msinga, Vulamehlo and Mhlabauyalingana Municipalities. The premier of KZN, Senzo Mchunu therefore, saw the need to launch a poverty alleviation program which will see people in these areas being provided with basic food supplies. This program launched today in the Maphumulo area. Premier of KZN, Senzo Mchunu tells us more about the program and how it will be rolled out.

He speaks about courage; about why we should see fear and failure as a gift, why we should have faith and belief in ourselves and why action is the only thing that makes any difference.
8 October 2015 - Topic: The Film and Publication Board together with the International Association of Internet Hotlines will host the first ever African Media Content Classification and Online Protection Conference which is aimed at addressing challenges around cyber safety, child protection and content classification from an African perspective. According to the CEO of FPB, Themba Wakashe, through this conference the FPB seeks to harmonise interventions in South Africa and the SAADC region that respond to protecting children across online platforms. FPB communications and public education manager, Janine Raftopoulos speaks to us about the conference.

14 September 2015 - Topic: The Department of Health's massive TB campaign: TB is said to be the number one leading cause of deaths in the country and as a result the department of Health is embarking on a massive TB campaign which aims to raise awareness and educate South Africans about the disease. This will be a nationwide campaign that will be spearheaded by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi. One of the aims of the campaign is to screen at least 90% of adults and youth in informal settlements, peri-mining communities and correctional facilities for TB and diabetes-HIV by 2020. Health minister, Dr Aaron Motsaledi spoke to us about this campaign.
