The return of The Goldwaters! Anne-France Goldwater is joined by lawyer and animal rights activist Camille Labchuk to break down the recent changes to animal rights law in Canada. They also talk about animals and agriculture and how farm animals do not have the same protections as house pets. Labchuk is also the co-host of the Paw & Order podcast.
Dr. Samantha Goldwater-Adler is joined by Canadian journalist and commentator Jen Gerson, who knows first hand how life online can change how we interact with the world. They delve into some of the ways that social networking can be toxic, particularly for women in media; and for entire generations of young people evolving with these technologies, without knowing the extent to which these networks may be hindering their development. And on this episode of The Goldwaters, Anne-France wonders, should Montréal be its own city-state? To help her answer this question she’s joined by Beryl Wajsman, editor of The Suburban newspaper, and Brent Tyler, a lawyer with experience fighting for anglophone rights in Québec. “The ethos in Montréal is so different from the rest of Québec. It seems to me that it deserves more status and more recognition that it gets,” Anne-France said.

For a lot of Quebecers, the debate over religious symbols in public life is an abstract one. For Sondos Lamrhari, it’s very real. Lamrhari is a police cadet at Ahuntsic College in Montreal. She also wears a hijab. And if the Parti Quebecois or the Coalition Avenir Quebec win power in the next election, she may be forced to choose between her dream job working for a Quebec police force, and her faith. Lamrhari is determined, however, to be the province’s first police officer to wear the hijab and believes it will favour rapprochement with Muslim communities.

This week brings The Goldwaters to Montréal City Hall for a bilingual sit-down with Montréal Mayor Valérie Plante. Anne-France and Daniel Goldwater are joined by Marie-Hélène Dubé, the founding partner of Goldwater, Dubé. They talk animal rights, how to grow the city, and Plante’s vision for the future. And things get emotional when they talk about what it means to everyone to be sitting with Montréal’s first female mayor.
March is here, and in many places that means kids have just finished their break and are heading back to the classroom. Now that the last stretch of the school year is upon us, The Goldwaters thought they would take this opportunity to explore the world of education. Why do we send our kids to school, and what to we hope they achieve while they’re there? Anne-France, Samantha, and Daniel try and work through some of the philosophy of education. In this episode, they also dig into things like technology and some alternative learning methods. And, they of course bring a little of their advice for parents of school-aged kids to help.
Ah, siblings. There’s no relationship that is likely to last as long, or be as strongly rooted as the one between a brother and a sister. Of course, there’s no relationship more associated with bickering and rivalry as that between siblings. So on this episode, The Goldwaters decided to sit down and hash out what it means to be siblings. How does having one another make a brother and sister who they are today? Dr. Samantha Goldwater-Adler and her brother Daniel Goldwater talk about how their relationship has grown and shifted over the years. Anne-France brings her insight as their mom, and explains how she tried to bring them up to respect and cherish each other. There might even be a tear or two. More than tackling their own relationship, The Goldwaters give some of their advice for parents raising siblings—and only children—ways they can help their kids grow up ready to face the world.
It wasn’t long after the #MeToo moment began that people started to wonder if North American society was in the midst of a sex panic. Values are shifting rapidly as we all deal with the reckoning that men can sometimes be horrible, even violent, toward women. But it’s hard to say what exactly this moment means. On this episode of The Goldwaters, the family wonders if we’re really in the middle of a broad moral panic, or if maybe the #MeToo moment is something else. ALSO: Anne-France gives an update on her recent meeting with Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante. The two talked animal rights, the budget, and Anne-France shares what it was like to be face to face with Montreal’s first female mayor.
Is comedy funny anymore? This might seem like a silly question. But, at the moment, everything seems political. And as politics has seeped into every part of culture, so has political correctness. So, Samantha Goldwater-Adler and Daniel Goldwater wonder, can comedy still be funny in today’s climate? To help them figure that out, Daniel and Samantha are joined by their longtime friend, stand-up comic David Heti. Not just a comic, Heti is a law school graduate and former lawyer with the Department of Justice (he describes his former employer’s concerns about his edgy comedy on the episode). He also teaches a course on comedy writing at McGill University. In this episode, The Goldwaters dive into today’s comedy, Heti’s comedic philosophy, and some of the issues around sexual harassment in the industry.
In the early 2000s, neoconservatism was the dominant strain of political thought on the right. Bush the younger was president in the U.S. and The West was under attack by Osama Bin Laden. And it was in this time that a young Daniel Goldwater found himself identifying as a neoconservative. Over time, Daniel has drifted away from his neocon past—or has he? In a special episode of The Goldwaters, Samantha Goldwater-Adler interviews her younger brother to see where his political views lie now, and how much that’s changed in the last 15 or so years. What Samantha wants to find out is what insight Daniel has into how the mind of a young conservative can be changed.
Across the US and Canada, women are coming forward and speaking out about the sexual violence they have faced over the years from men in positions of authority. In this episode, the family talks through #MeToo and tries to find out where the line between exposing bad, sometimes monstrous, behaviour and protecting due process lies. It’s a tough subject, especially for Anne-France Goldwater, who had to explain to Daniel and Samantha how different things were when she came of age.

Cannibis legalization is coming to Canada, and the Goldwaters have some questions. So, they invited Adam Greenblatt to visit the Goldwater Grille to get some answers.
