Red Wolf has had a long and difficult journey with plenty of disappointments. In these final chapters he learns some truths, and discovers hope for his future.
Red Wolf (who now sees himself as George) tries to make his own way in the world, now more alone than ever.
Red Wolf is on the run and heading home, but what about the Indian Agent on his trail? Will he be caught? What do the townspeople think about wolves?
Red Wolf struggles at home during the summer break. Sickness falls on the residential school and Red Wolf loses a friend. When Red Wolf returns home the following summer he asks his family to call him George. Why is this?
In chapter 10, we reunite with Crooked Ear and this chapter is told from his perspective. What do we learn about wolves from his narrative? Later, the governor comes to inspect the school and is very impressed with the 'progress' that is being made. We learn too about his opinion about what should happen to the older indigenous students. Mrs. Hall burns the letters parents send. What can we infer about the actions and opinions of these people who work at the residential schools?
As you listen think about what the goals of a residential school were. What evidence from the text suggests that the school is succeeding in taking away Red Wolf's language and culture?
Red Wolf gets used to some of the routines of the residential school. Through his eyes we see how very different this place is from the home of his family.
Red Wolf's father drops him off at the gates of the residential school. By nightfall he is left secretly clutching his wolf pendant, the only personal possession he has left. Life will never be the same again. Meanwhile, Crooked Ear waits for his friend.
It's 1885, not far from KW. We meet Crooked Ear, a newly orphaned young wolf and Red Wolf, a young Anishnaabian boy whose life is about to change forever.
