Getting to know the people in your community and what brought them to living on the land. Listening to these stories will hopefully connect anyone living remotely and to know that everyone has a story to share. Presented by Angie Nisbet, a born and raised country woman who has lived a diverse life taking her all over the country and into lots of different jobs to were she is today.
When it comes to work shirts, we all value quality and durability—especially in the agricultural industry, where spending long days under the hot sun or in the chill of cooler months is just part of the job.
Enter Maddie Beatty, who, along with three others, started playing around with the idea of creating a work shirt brand that would capture their adventures from the sea to the stations.
From this idea, Hide to Tide was born. Nearly four years later, Maddie has taken over the reins entirely, with a mission to produce Australia's highest quality, most trusted work shirts. In 2023, Hide to Tide was recognised as the Most Innovative Work Shirt Brand of the year.
Though Maddie isn't originally from the country, she has embraced everything rural life offers, from the opportunities to the lifestyle. She marry her forever, Ben, a helicopter pilot, and is just beginning an exciting chapter in her life. Maddie is a kind, creative, and driven young woman making her mark in the agricultural sector—definitely one to watch!
Maddie is also passionate about bridging the gap between urban and rural communities, helping those in metropolitan areas understand the realities of working in agriculture and why it matters so much.

For many years now, New Zealand-born Fiona Baird has been bringing fun, fashion, and an incredible work ethic to her role as a stockwoman on live export shipments from Australia throughout Southeast Asia. Her story stands out because, despite the grit and grime of working with animals all day, she maintains her high style standards with well-done hair and bold red lipstick and a touch of chanel perfume. However, Fiona’s journey wasn’t always centered on live exports. She has lived a vibrant life, with many twists and turns since her childhood on a farm in the South Island of New Zealand, from a makeup artist in Melbourne to closing her eyes and pointing to a place on the Australian map landing her a job as a barmaid in Camowheel in QLD. In this episode we will also touch on greif, for Fiona it was loosing her father and we talk at length about the impact of what that has had.

This week on the podcast, we're thrilled to introduce Jade Mackay, a dynamic marketing consultant and rural business woman whose diverse journey bridges both urban and rural landscapes. Jade currently resides in Goondiwindi with her husband, Jack, and their 3-year-old son, Tom. Jack, an agronomist by trade, manages his own farm, growing wheat, barley, and chickpeas.
Jade's career path has been marked by pivotal moments and bold decisions, including a major shift at 35 when she realized that city life wasn't her ultimate destination. After earning a degree in Business with a focus on Marketing and PR, her first role as a Marketing & Admin Coordinator for Port Douglas Daintree Tourism set the stage for an impressive career. She went on to work for major companies like Wagamama in Sydney and Boston, David Jones, Foxtel, and News Corp in Sydney, Walt Disney and BSkyB in London, Virgin Mobile in Sydney, RB Sellars and White Story in Melbourne, and Goondiwindi Cotton back in Goondiwindi.
Jade and Jack, who met in 2018, have been married for five years. Their journey to parenthood was not without its challenges; after a five-year battle, they welcomed their beautiful son, Tom. Now, living rurally, Jade finds inspiration in the agriculture industry, particularly with the rapid advancements in technology. She sees immense potential for growth but emphasizes the critical need to attract more people to regional areas to support this development.
Passionate about creating change, especially as a rural woman, Jade believes in the power of community involvement. Whether it's joining a committee, volunteering, or taking on local work, she feels that immersing oneself in community life not only creates opportunities but also enriches the overall experience of living in rural areas.

Welcome Jill Kelly to the podcast. For over a decade, Jill has served as a district vet for Local Land Services in Western NSW, providing invaluable support to farmers with ruminant nutrition, welfare, and farm sustainability. When she's not dissecting sheep carcasses, Jill unleashes her creative side as a painter, known by the handle Miss Vet.
The phrase, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going," truly embodies Jill's spirit. During the drought in 2011, while the #BuyFromTheBush Campaign gained recognition, Jill initiated a personal project called the Drought Smoko. This effort, born out of necessity, saw her baking a cake every Tuesday and spending the morning discussing livestock management topics with local farmers, offering much-needed support and camaraderie during tough times.
Jill is a wealth of knowledge and is going to cover a lot in this conversation.

Primrose Sturrock, 38, hails from Drillham, QLD, and grew up on a 25,000-acre, fourth-generation mixed grazing and farming operation between St. George and Dirranbandi.
The youngest of three sisters, she attended St. George State School and later, Clayfield College in Brisbane for her secondary education. Despite achieving a high OP score, Primrose eschewed university in favour of hands-on experience.
She spent her gap year breaking horses in western QLD before working with top trainers in Texas and California, eventually finding herself training horses in Hawaii. Upon returning to Australia, she worked under renowned trainer Ian Francis before starting her own horse-breaking business in Central QLD.
Her adventurous spirit led her to diverse roles, from painting barns in Norway to living off-grid in Bulgaria, and working on motor yachts in Florida. Now, Primrose is married to Riley Sturrock, with whom she has three children—Jock (10), Arabella (8), and Hughie (6).
They manage a 12,000-acre beef cattle operation, a 5,000-head feedlot, and an earthmoving business. Primrose also runs a holistic interior design business from home. Her journey has been marked by significant moments, from the upheaval of moving from her childhood farm to the challenges of motherhood and balancing work in a male-dominated industry.
Through it all, she has remained committed to her family, her businesses, and her community, embodying resilience and adaptability.

Bronte Austin, a 29-year-old agricultural powerhouse from Rockhampton. Bronte shares her journey from boarding school to becoming an animal production specialist. She discusses her education, including a gap year mustering on properties around her home of Yarka and studying agriculture at the University of New England. Bronte's career spans roles at Top Country Roma, Nutrien Roma, and currently Nutrien Rockhampton. Kahlia Mickan, 31, hails from “Dulthara Station” in Hughenden. Growing up, she attended Clermont State School before transitioning to homeschooling for her secondary education. Pursued a career in Vet Nursing, working at various veterinary surgeries before settling at “Dulthara Station” in 2011. Kahlia has been married to Nat Mickan for almost 13 years, and together they graze beef cattle. Significant challenges in her life include a severe horse accident in 2013 and enduring prolonged droughts. Diversifying her career, Kahlia has ventured into multiple businesses, including Middle Of Nowhere Creations, a monetized YouTube channel "Life On The Lick Run," a booming self-storage company, and a podcast called "Invest Out West." Embracing rural life, Kahlia is passionate about personal development and loves sharing her story and inspiration with others. She emphasizes the importance of communication in handling stress and has a deep appreciation for the supportive small community she lives in.

Have you heard of the 1970s rural women's movement? You might be wondering when rural women began advocating for a seat at the table in agriculture and where it all started. Today, we're diving into that history with Alana Johnson.
Alana Johnson is a fifth-generation family farmer engaged in cattle production, farm forestry, and an award-winning habitat restoration project near Benalla in northeast Victoria. She is widely recognized for her work in rural development and gender equality. In January 2020, Alana was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her services to women.
Throughout her career, Alana has served on Agricultural Ministerial Councils at both the State and Federal levels. She is the immediate past Chair of the Victorian Catchment Management Council and has held director positions at Goulburn Murray Water and the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation.
A pioneer of the rural women’s movement in Australia, Alana is a founding member of Australian Women in Agriculture. She currently chairs the Victorian Women’s Trust, the state’s peak women’s advocacy body. In 2018, she was appointed to the inaugural Ministerial Council on Women’s Equality in Victoria and inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.
Alana has received numerous accolades, including the Rural Women’s Award and recognition as one of the inaugural 100 Women of Influence in Australia by the Australian Financial Review and the inaugural 100 Women in Australian Agribusiness by Rural Press. She is a founding member and past President of the acclaimed democracy project, Voices for Indi, and co-authored The Indi Way, published in 2023. Additionally, in 2020, she co-founded the Community Independents Project with former MP Cathy McGowan, leading to the 2022 election of six Community Independent Teal MPs to federal parliament.
In 2019, Alana received a Distinguished Alumni Award from La Trobe University and is a graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

After years of longing for a rural lifestyle change, extensive searching, and enduring numerous disappointments with unsuccessful offers, fate finally guided Natalie Hackl and her husband to discover a hidden gem in Blue Knob, NSW. Tucked away in the shadow of the majestic Border Ranges, the farm had languished in neglect for a decade, its inherent beauty masked by overgrown fields and a rundown shack. Yet, beneath acres of overgrowth, a grove of struggling finger limes awaited rediscovery.
As they delved deeper into the property, wading through towering swaths of grass, they were rewarded with awe-inspiring views of Blue Knob, Lillian Rock, Mount Warning, and The Border Ranges—a moment of true love at first sight.
Five years later, despite often flushed faces and bodies drenched in sweat, Natalie and her husband Matt have unearthed the true worth of resilience, perseverance, and patience. Bush Harvest Co stands as a testament to the stunning and bountiful land they are privileged to call home.
Although both hailed from backgrounds in primary school teaching and equine nutrition, they possessed minimal farming experience. Navigating the challenges of farming—through drought, bushfire, pandemic, and floods—has proven to be a remarkable journey. Anyone familiar with finger limes understands Natalie's description of them as a "prick" of a plant to work with (long leather pruning gloves are a must!).
Nonetheless, their passion for hard work, rural living, and native Australian botanicals has fortified their determination to create something extraordinary with Bush Harvest Co for their customers. They sincerely hope you'll cherish their products as much as they do!

Georgie Somerset is not only an Australian farmer and grazier but also a passionate advocate for the rural industry, with a particular focus on empowering women within the sector. In 2018, she was appointed General President of AgForce Queensland, a leading farming lobby group.
With a rich history of leadership roles, Georgie served as president of the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women's Network from 2009 to 2014, and she was a founding vice-president of the organization in 1993. Her extensive experience and wealth of knowledge make her a formidable force in the agricultural community.
Today, we're diving into the importance of being a member of AgForce and how you can get involved. Georgie's involvement in the Regional, Rural and Remote Women's Network further highlights her commitment to fostering community engagement and empowerment.
Georgie is the current AgForce president and its been a busy few years with her at the helm.With her children showing keen interest in agriculture, Georgie is optimistic about the future of the industry and excited to see it flourish.

In response to the challenges posed by the pandemic in 2020, Rural Women's Day ventured into publishing a collaborative keepsake magazine, distributing 700 copies across Australia & New Zealand. The initiative's social media presence has flourished organically, amassing over 12,000 followers.
Recognized for her outstanding contributions, Jackie Elliott was honored as the recipient of the 2023 Rural Community Leader of the Year award at the Farmer of the Year awards. The trial required her presence every week, and every six weeks, she had to stay for the entire week. Life as a Clerk for a solicitor in Cairns to spotting the chopper pilot and falling in love in her early 20’s Kim Hughes took a leap into agricultural life. A young family at foot and busy in the paddock, it was Kim’s involvement in the ICPA which took her to new heights. In 2011 Kim joined Queensland State Council where she held the Curriculum, Specific Needs and Distance Education portfolios. Kim became a Vice President in 2012 and was elected Queensland State President from 2015 – 2018. Anneli Day, a women from the land who did primary school 60km each of Wandoan called Cockatoo in the middle of a buffel paddock. This may have been the place where Anneli got her passion for teaching and education but more importantly being an advocate for being able to give opportunity to children in the bush. Meeting the love of your life at 16 and your best friend is something that doesn't happening to often nowadays. Jemma did just that but in her early 20's found a lump in her breast that for so long medical professionals said was nothing, But one day that diagnosis changed. The wait during covid, no family by her side or to even know if you could get operated on was all left to the day of. Kaitie Nash moved from WA to Darwin in search of something different, her path led her to a life in NSW. It’s been an adjustment and having a ‘just give it a crack attitude” to farming life whilst had great intend soon took a downward spiral. In a industry where pay checks are not a weekly given for Kaitie depression came to the forefront.

Fleur McDonald has really had her boundaries tested on her path to being a rural woman, from boarding school to being tested mentally and emotionally. Forging her way with taking herself to Marcus Oldham College knowing that the agricultural industry was where she was meant to make a career. Fleur an esteemed author writing over 15 novels, she started a non for profit online called ‘Breaking Silence’ which aims to help victims of domestic violence. Mother of two, who in their own entrance into the world had some hurdles to overcome.

It’s the sweetest sight to see and now with her second child on the ground life is busy as ever.

Tanya Heaslip has many feathers in her hat when it comes to a career, she is an Australian author based at Alice Springs.
She is an accomplished lawyer a passionate rural woman and a pocket rocket with a vibrant passionate nature.
Growing up in the NT she was instilled with resilience which she needed when heading away to boarding school. A traumatic experience which she has drawn in along with her life experiences to publish a catalogue of brilliant novels.

Julie Brown is this weeks guest, taking a leap of faith,relocating to Longreach in central QLD for a job at the Longreach Ag college. Julie got herself involved in social events and fun within her community which allowed her to meet her husband and fulfilling a childhood dream of living on the land. It has not come with ease living through the crippling drought that consumed most of Queensland for 10 years. For someone who sees life as always cup half full she did doubt why loving god would push them to the brink. She is the creative mind behind Coola Cozzies and loves the opportunities the land has provided for herself and the family.

This week we finishing off the interview with the dynamic due from Moble Homestead. Part 2 we sit down with Meg Rutledge (Kylie's daughter) back home at Quilpie, but before putting her roots back down on the family farm she was lucky enough to be involved with some iconic companies including AA Co and Hello Fresh in the UK. It's these experiences which Kylie and Meg believe make their farming family a success and not to mention I think Brian and Kylie both love having the 5th generation step into their own on the property. Talia is an energetic happy and life loving rural lady of the land and sky. Between Talia and her husband they have ambition and are more than happy to take opportunities when they see them. But the biggest thing they believe in is doing it together.

Emily Bryant is a rural women at heart and staring her rural journey as a station cook, determine, outgoing, passionate, has a good attitude towards life and really pushed the barrier for young rural women to back themselves and get in amongst the ag industry. Her advice is “The days are long and the beers are short” going from station cook to station manager within 8 years. A real go getter with some great advise on how she sees the ag industry and what we all can look forward to.

December 2019 and heading into 2020, we will always remember the catastrophic fires throughout Victoria and NSW. These fires brought to light many people’s stories of loss, emotional and physical helplessness and not mention attempting to rebuild a life again. My first taste of the bush was visiting a relative outside Gunnedah at age 8. It was bare dirt, scattered with sheep bones but I felt something, I didn’t know what but it felt good”.
