Stefan Ihrig, a Professor of History at the University of Haifa and the director of the Haifa Center for German and European Studies in Israel, has dedicated his career to unfolding the complex tapestry of European and Middle Eastern history. While our discussion might not (seemingly) be of direct interest to Hellenism, we explore what shaped the landscape and our understanding of the late Ottoman Empire and the early days of the Republic of Turkey: the threads that wove through the lives of Greeks during those times. The often overlooked German support to the Ottoman Empire, later to Atatürk, emerges as a significant external factor that also influenced the fate of Greeks in that turbulent period.

Through Professor Stefan Ihrig’s research and books, including “Atatürk in the Nazi Imagination”, we explore genocides of that era and geography, the denial of genocides, historical lessons of illiberal democratic leaders within deficient leadership environments applicable also today. The fascination with totalitarian historical figures adds another layer to the intricate fabric of a nation's founding principles.

Yet, we see that progress is not evenly happening across the globe. We see many poor regions and countries where people do not have access to education, and conflicts often take place in many of them.

Conflicts prohibit social progress and without social coherence, technological, educational and political progress is at stake. So, one might ask:

• does poverty give birth to conflict and lack of education, or

• is conflict responsible for poverty and a non-existing educational system or

• does poor education give rise to poverty and create conflict?

Start-ups can become a creative space for science, engineering and technology researchers and an opportunity to develop their careers.

Researchers, businesses and investors who get involved in business accelerators, also those creating those programmes, might ask themselves:

What makes a business accelerator programme successful for supporting early-stage entrepreneurs becoming stable in the market?
Should actors, stakeholders and accelerator programme developers pay more attention to business development, infrastructure, network (including mentors), or financial support?

Mimicking tissues and organs and fish dynamics, the forces of nature with simplicity and without simplification, maximising current technologies for more affordable offshore wind farms where population density is high and there is a shortage of available land, producing plant-based biofuels non-chemically are some of the top learning moments at the Global Greek Influence podcast.

Researchers may speak with modesty, presenting the advantages and disadvantages of their work. This does not mean that their solutions are not beneficial; they are not businessmen or marketers.

They produce patents that do not reach us because some industries might not want to invest in new processes and products as they prefer incremental improvements to their existing products and not real innovation.

What researchers need is an equitable approach by funding bodies, technologies businesses andindustries. That is the definition of symbiosis, between humans and nature, between the present and future.

We now meet Dimitris, three years later, going through two academic positions, now in his third one as an Assistant Professor in Materials Engineering at the University of Dundee (Scotland, U.K.), which collaborates with the Central South University (Changsha, Hunan, China) where Dimitris was at the time of our conversation. We discussed some key aspects of his research in the science and technology for the development of artificial organs, transitioning from a PhD holder to an academic, also the current structures in and status of higher education internationally (in the U.K, Greece and China) and research, as well as the Great and Silent resignations. Dr Antonis Chaldeos (PhD in History, University of Johannesburg) is an independent researcher and currently affiliated with the University of Johannesburg as a Research Associate. Maria Andrielou works with the Chemical Industry for over 10 years. Having a background in linguistics, became a communicator in cross-cultural and international relations led by her insensitivity to injustice. She was working for the European Chemical Industry Council in Brussels when she realised that everything around us and inside us is Chemistry, while communicating Bioeconomy to stakeholders, policymakers and the institutions. She has led the first-of-its-kind, in Greece, investment in large-scale production and biorefinery of microalgae biomass in Thessaloniki. Now, she is the Head of Marketing and Corporate Communication of Plankton First S.A. (Nano Algae Solutions AG). Maria is also a member of the Greek Bioeconomy Forum, led by the private sector and the only platform in Greece and in the Greek language that promotes bioeconomy.
