This episode features one example of movement to the high side, and one example of movement to the low side, but I've written all about this perspective in Enneagram in Real Life, featuring more examples of each movement and strategies to build more of the high side of each arrow.

The #1 Thing New Enneagram Learners Miss
YOUTUBE LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4H1GSIOb3Q&t=125s
The Enneagram might seem simple at first glance: you take a quick quiz, it spits out a number, and now you know your type. That’s it, right?
Well, not quite! The truth is, there’s a lot more to the Enneagram, especially if you want to use it for growth and inner work. In this video, you’ll learn about your intelligence center and why that matters.
→ How do you see the core emotion of your intelligence center in your life?
→ If you feel disconnected from your intelligence center (for example, sometimes 9s feel disconnected from the action of the body center, and 3s feel disconnected from the emotionality of the heart center), what would it be like to tune into that more?
Thanks so much for listening! Leave your questions & future video requests as comments on the YouTube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4H1GSIOb3Q&t=125s

On this week’s episode of Enneagram IRL, we meet with Dr. Jerome Lubbe. Dr. Jerome is referred to as the “Patient Doctor” because it was his own quest for neurological well-being that led him to specialize in complex, unresolved neurological cases. His practice explores how functional neurology, neuroplasticity, and tools like the Enneagram can improve holistic well-being. Dr. Jerome created and released the first-ever neuroscience-based model of the Enneagram in his book, The Brain-Based Enneagram. Being a functional neurologist has shown him that the healing we once thought was impossible is actually possible. Neuroplasticity tells us that we are capable of change. If we understand the function of the brain, we can improve our way of life.

On this week’s episode of Enneagram IRL, we meet with Kate Hallock, a writer who loves taking non-fiction topics and turning them into engaging fiction. Her Debut novel, Nine Ways to Die: An Enneagram Murder Mystery, takes the concepts of the Enneagram, and displays them in the fun puzzle of a murder mystery. Kate lives in Peachtree City, Georgia where she drives a golf cart everywhere usually with at least one of her three daughters in tow, sometimes her husband and occasionally their scruffy dog. She spends most of her free time inventing worlds and characters and writing about them. Luckily, she can do a lot of it in her head while she runs carpool, shops for groceries, and endlessly sorts socks.
This is part one of this two part book club series! Join us as we set up the book, Nine Ways to Die: An Enneagram Murder Mystery with Author Kate Hallock.

We love this question because it always helps connect with more kindness and compassion for our younger selves. We often find words of wisdom for our younger selves that we still need – it’s always a good reminder to follow our own advice, too!
These responses were sent in via Instagram a few months ago, so in this podcast episode, we’ll be reading each of the messages in the post as well as various insightful comments from the @NineTypesCo Instagram community.

On this week’s episode of Enneagram IRL, we meet with Samantha Mackay, an Enneagram coach, trainer, and educator who specializes in using the Enneagram to amplify personal growth and healing. Samantha was a litigation lawyer until chronic stress and burnout lead her to evaluate what she really wanted in her life and to find the source of her pain. As a Self-Preservation Seven, she was good at ignoring her pain until her body made it clear that was no longer an option. She found the path to recovering from chronic stress and managing an autoimmune condition was to heal not just her physical body, but also her emotional, intellectual, and spiritual bodies. Her recovery journey started 15 years ago and she now supports others on their journey.
We discuss how Samantha found the Enneagram, her core type, and subtype, and how it now all plays a role in her life of personal healing, as well as coaching others to do the same. Such a fascinating episode that helps give great insight into the experience of a Self-Pres Seven.

This week’s episode of Enneagram IRL is a little special because I'm the one being interviewed! Truity Labs (@truitylabs) is an online personality assessment platform, and they have a variety of assessments, including the Enneagram. A few months ago, I was interviewed by Samantha Mackay, who creates training programs and content for Truity Labs! Fun Fact: Samantha and I met in the Chestnut Paes Enneagram Academy. In this interview, Samantha and I discussed some of the upsides and downsides of using the Enneagram with teams, my approach to leadership and organizational communication as a practitioner, and more. So thank you so much to Samantha and Truity for interviewing me!

Enneagram type is frequently described as a lens through which we see the world. This lens often causes us to overfocus on certain things and completely miss other things! What if we could shift our focus to see what we’re missing?
This episode was inspired by my own thoughts around what I tend to overfocus on and what that causes me to miss, and as I reflected on this idea, I realized that I’d experience more balance, fulfillment, and freedom if I could shift my perspective.
So what about you? What do you tend to overfocus on? What does that cause you to miss? What would be different if you shifted your focus?

Quote from the episode:
"Those who have come from highly dysfunctional families can take heart in knowing that the Essential self within us is completely intact and always looking for ways to manifest itself. Initially, we may have to spend a great deal of time and effort working on the gaps in our development, but the core of our Being is always there to support us. Again, no matter how painful our early experiences were, our Essence cannot be harmed." The Wisdom of the Enneagram by Don Richard Riso & Russ Hudson, pg. 35
