With tech layoffs dominating the news headlines in recent months, the availability of talent has increased, however it’s still a tight labor market in most countries, and it continues to be difficult to hire great talent.
For many organisations, it can require thinking outside the box. In this episode of the Shortlist, we’re going to examine the benefits of hiring globally and how this can be a game changer for many organizations.
The added value that international talent can bring to an organisation is significant in terms of skills, experience and international exposure as well as increased diversity and greater innovation. But how do you go about hiring international talent? Where do you start?
Joining us on The Shortlist is Karin Bjorkman, Founder, Beyondo. Karin is a consultative partner and talent advisor, with more than 20 years of experience in international recruitment in The Netherlands and Sweden. She spent 17 years with Undutchables Recruitment Agency as a recruitment and executive consultant before setting up the Swedish arm of Undutchables. Last summer, Karin set up her own agency, Beyondo, connecting candidates to international job opportunities.
The core belief of diversity, equity, and inclusion is that people deserve to be treated fairly. However, all too often the onus of this falls on the individual to advocate for themselves, speak up, and fight for the recognition, change, and fairness we all deserve. Especially in the workplace. Imagine a world where this becomes less of an upward battle and more of a partnership between leadership and individual employees.
Joining us on The Shortlist to dive deep into this is My-Chau Matrick. My-Chau is a friend of SocialTalent and Leader of the Join & Connect Ops Program and Change at Cisco. Together, we’ll discuss the importance of diversity in leadership and the role it plays in creating opportunities for our employees. We’ll also discuss the power of human connection in the workplace.
The war for talent continues to rage on and organizations are trying to stand out and rise above the noise. But as the landscape of work has changed dramatically
over the last few years, so too has the approach to Talent Acquisition. So how do you manage TA sourcing across multiple regions? How do you build a reputation for hiring when your employer’s brand perception varies so much from country to country?
Joining us on The Shortlist to chat about this is Gui de Souza Neves, Global Talent Acquisition Sourcing & Solutions Manager at Nestlé. Gui has been working with Nestlé since 2005 and has spent his career to date in HR. During this time, he has not only progressed through various different HR job roles but has also relocated from Brazil to Europe. Today, he is responsible for Nestlé’s Talent Acquisition process, known as TA Solutions, as well as managing TA Sourcing across 3 different regional centres. When lockdown hit, he also somehow found the time to set up LGBT Mentoring, a not-for-profit with over 60 mentors, providing support to those people in search of jobs in the LGTBQ+ community.
Over the next few months, we will introduce our new Leadership authors on the
Shortlist to uncover the challenges facing new managers and how these
challenges can be overcome. As we gain more responsibilities as individuals in
any organization, boundary setting is essential but our dominant culture is not set
up to respect boundaries. How can we learn to set and respect boundaries?
We often talk about impostor syndrome or the inner critic; the desire to feel less
visible, less vulnerable, less exposed. The inner critic craves safety. But being
vulnerable and taking risks is essential for growth. How can you balance your
inner critic with the desire for personal growth?
Here to tell us how is leadership coach, facilitator and inclusion consultant, Debbie
Dannon. Debbie has created her own leadership framework, Rebel Leadership,
where she builds moral leadership grounded in authenticity, balance and
courage. Her Rebel Leadership framework encourages us to rebel against cultural
norms and expectations, to flip the script and to understand our need and desire to survive.
Over the next few months, we will introduce our new Leadership authors on the Shortlist to uncover the challenges facing new managers and how these challenges can be overcome. As a new manager, it is quite common to fall into bad habits in the early stage of your promotion. People-pleasing, communication blunders and managing conflict are just some of the common mistakes of first-time managers - so how can you avoid these and set yourself up for success from the outset?
Karin and David, a husband and wife team, founded Let’s Grow Leaders in 2013 after many years working as executives. They focus on providing practical tools for human-centered leadership development. Since the inception of Let's Grow Leaders (in 2013), Karin and David have helped grow over 10,000 leaders in 14 countries. Between them, they have written 5 books and Karin hosts the popular LinkedIn show- Asking for a Friend. They are also very active in their philanthropic initiative, Winning Wells, building clean water wells for the people of Cambodia.
In our latest HR and talent management webinar, SocialTalent Live: Workplace Priorities for CPOs in 2023, Johnny sat down with the renowned Pat Wadors, CPO at UKG. In this very special fireside chat segment, they discuss their top focus for the year ahead - leadership. In this episode, you’ll hear Pat describe how to be a ‘for all leader’ and how to nurture psychological safety and trust. Whether you are a new leader or are looking to up your leadership game, this segment is a must-listen!
Internal mobility consistently ranks as a top indicator of great workplaces. It’s a win-win for talent development and retention. But it’s also still a challenge for many companies - especially within large workforces. How can you create a culture of internal mobility when it’s difficult to know the true extent of the talent within your organization?
Our guest on The Shortlist this week is Colleen Rush, the Global Head of TA at Merck Group. Colleen will be sharing her experience of working in large organizations to talk about collaboration across disciplines, building internal mobility at scale, and how learning and development can unlock new possibilities for talent and the company alike.
Over the next few months, we will be introducing our new Leadership authors on
the Shortlist to uncover the various challenges facing new managers and how
these challenges can be overcome. New managers often face significant stress as
they move into their new roles and need to be able to manage both their own
individual stress and the stress of their team members. So if you are planning to
move into a managerial role for the first time or you have recently been promoted
to manager, it’s worth asking yourself the question – how am I going to manage
and move through stress in my new role?
Joining us on The Shortlist today to chat about this is Lianne Weaver, one of our
new authors to the ST platform who has developed content for our upcoming
Leadership solution. Lianne is a CPD-accredited well-being and personal
development trainer. She is the Manager Director of Beam Development and
Training, a company that delivers interactive well-being and resilience training
programmes, workshops and speaking events for organisations across the UK.
Together we’ll discuss the causes of stress as a new manager and give practical
advice on both individual and team stress can be managed in order to improve
employee well-being and the culture of organisations.
We’re feeling nostalgic on The Shortlist this week! With almost 40 unique episodes in the bag for 2022, it’s time to look back at some of the best advice we’ve received over the course of the year.
Every guest we’ve had on has contributed immensely to our shortlist, graciously imparting pearls of wisdom on all the topics that have shaped this incredibly uncertain year. So, to dive into this cornucopia of insight, Johnny Campbell is joined by Holly Fawcett, our Director of Content here at SocialTalent (and also occasional host!). Together, they’ll pull out some of their favorites and discuss these nuggets of advice in relation to all the major themes that have affected 2022, from how TA can transform itself, to the importance of wellbeing and DEI.
Times have been tough the past few years. People have been weathering all sorts of storms. But how can leaders within a company create an environment that supports resilience without creating unrealistic expectations? Resilience doesn’t mean enduring high levels of stress, it means building a sustainable, supportive environment so that people have the right tools to tackle whatever challenges arise. So what does an empathetic, equitable, and psychologically safe culture look like?
Joining us on The Shortlist to talk about the strategic elements of establishing your company culture is Dmitri Julius, Head of Special Projects at ICON. Dmitri recently took on this new role after serving as ICON’s Chief People Officer. Together, we’ll discuss the resilience of the human spirit, how to nurture that within a company culture, and the role that psychological safety plays in meeting people where they are and working together for the best outcomes.
In a difficult economic situation, many decisions boil down to numbers, rather than personal decisions. But what if the data was humanized? Instead of a cycle of overly reactive firefighting, how can workforce planning look to the longer term to create a more sustainable, steady approach? “Talent intelligence” data offers a different perspective.
Joining us on The Shortlist to chat about this is Toby Culshaw. Toby is the Talent Intelligence Leader: Worldwide Operations and Consumer at Amazon. He is also the author of “Talent Intelligence: Use Business and People Data to Drive Organizational Performance.” Together, we’ll discuss what talent intelligence is, how this offers a more balanced perspective to workforce planning and strategy, and most importantly, how this data can offer an alternative route to the worst-case scenario.
For many recruiters, the past few years have presented many challenges with the pandemic, remote work, and Zoom interviews. Dealing with a war on top of all this seems unimaginable. And yet, that’s the painful reality for Ukrainian-based businesses. How can you stay motivated and continue to engage candidates during a war, if you are now safe to do so?
Joining us on The Shortlist this week are Anna Stetsenko and Darja Gornitska from Indigo Tech Recruiters. Anna is the Founder and Darja is co-CEO and Chief
Operating Officer of the tech recruiting agency based in Ukraine. We’ll be talking to them about what it’s like to balance recruiting with the ongoing war, how they manage to stay motivated and productive through a crisis, and how they’ve leaned on diverse hiring and education for their continued success.
If any of our listeners would like to donate to support Ukraine, Anna’s brother, Andrew Stetsenko leads an initiative that raises funds for Medical and humanitarian aid for Ukrainians. Andrew is also the founder of the job board and recruitment agency Relocate.me andGlossaryTech - a solution that helps make complex tech definitions clear in CVs.
The world of hybrid and remote work and interviews has revealed major flaws in
the standard employee retention handbook. Most organizations can fall into the
trap of treating the symptoms of high levels of churn and being reactive, rather
than focusing on fixing the root cause of turnover. There’s a dangerous cycle of
investing time and resources into hiring, onboarding, and training only for an
employee to leave after the first year. Are you stuck in that cycle?
Joining us on The Shortlist this week is Lee McQueen, who calls this cycle “talent
waste.” Lee is an entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Phoenix51, a winner of
The Apprentice, and host of “The Talent Waste Show”. Together, we’ll discuss
what talent waste is, how to mitigate this with proactive retention strategies, and
how aligning candidates with the culture and values of a company can make the
biggest difference in hiring and retention.
One piece of advice from Lee:
Have a look at what you want to be as a business, who you want in your business - start at the culture and values. Organisations who are successful have this at their core.
If you want to go out and do something, if you have an idea, test it with people who don’t know you in the market. If you get a good response, go for it, build your business! Fulfilling an ambition to build your own business is incredibly rewarding (and hard). Most folks only see the swan on top of the lake, but they’re working so hard underneath.
The war for talent continues to rage on and organizations are trying to stand out and rise above the noise. But as the landscape of work has changed dramatically over the last few years, so too have candidate needs. So if you’re struggling to attract, hire, and retain the talent your business requires to succeed, it’s worth asking yourself the question – has my employer brand and company culture altered to reflect this evolution?
Joining us on The Shortlist to chat about this is Charu Malhotra. Charu is a leading HR expert who has led employer marketing, brand building, transformation, and diversity at Unilever, BP, McKinsey & Company and Primark. Together we’ll discuss practical advice on how organizations can optimize their employer brand to reflect the needs of today’s candidates, and look at the importance of communicating your company culture.
Trust is a key component when it comes to measuring the state of inclusion in an organization. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable bringing their whole selves to work, and as a leader it’s your job to create an inclusive, high-trust environment. Employees are happier, more productive, engaged, and motivated when a culture of trust is fostered – so how can leaders build this?
We’re delighted to be speaking with DEI expert and SocialTalent author, Vessy Tasheva, about this very topic. On this week’s show we’ll chat about creating trust in the context of the polarized world we live in and how trust-driven leadership is something that needs to be consistently practised in order to be perfected.
Talent is the lifeblood of every organization. Very few things impact the success of
a business more than the employees within its walls. When leveraged and
optimized well, talent strategies can be a significant strategic strength. So why
then is TA and HR often regarded as a service function that merely receives and
fills vacancies?
Well, according to our guest, Keiran Dodd, the Global VP of Talent at Preply, this
definition needs reframing. TA and HR should be seen as a shaping function. And
on this week’s episode of The Shortlist, Keiran is going to chat with us about how
this perception can be changed. He’ll go through the key pillars of this, examining
operational excellence, data, employer brand, and customer experience. We’ll also
discuss how organizations can move from being reactive to proactive, giving TA
that space at the table to impact workforce planning and contribute to overall success.

Talent Acquisition is often one of the first functions in a workplace to feel the impact of change, both positive and negative. And for this reason, it can be incredibly easy for TA to get overwhelmed within this atmosphere. As organizations look to rebuild and reframe after the pandemic, we are also facing more economic and societal uncertainty. Tough times are on the horizon so it’s important for TA to bolster themselves.
This week, we’re joined by Jeff Moore, the VP of Talent Acquisition at Toast, Inc. With years of experience in this industry, Jeff has weathered many a storm and is here to share his keen insights. We’ll chat about the importance of networking and building community, how great talent will always have tough demands, and how to better operate in these challenging conditions.
Talent acquisition is constantly changing. What was once best practice is quickly overtaken by new ways of working, new strategies, new tools. Now, while all that innovation is ultimately great for the industry and will mean that candidates get a better experience dealing with a company, it can be hard to keep up. The game changers are the technology solutions to the age old challenges. But how do you know where to turn and how to keep up with the latest trends in TA Tech?
We’re sitting down with an expert in HR and Talent technology, Jonathan Kestenbaum, the Managing Director of Technology Strategy & Partnerships at AMS. Jonathan will be sharing his deep knowledge in this space and chat to us about: how to stay up to date on the latest trends in TA tech, what impact these trends might have on the industry and day-to-day challenges, and how you can take advantage of these insights to get ahead of the game.
Originating from TikTok, before worming its way to mainstream consciousness, the phrase “quiet quitting” is everywhere. Videos, social posts, and think pieces
have all been created, highlighting a trend that sees workers reject overzealous expectations in favor of doing the minimum their role requires. Public response
has varied with some commentators heralding the spotlight this has put on burnout, toxic cultures, and disengagement, while others label it as next-gen
nonsense.
We want to get to the bottom of this! So our guest on this week’s episode is none other than Jason Lauritsen. Jason is a familiar face on the SocialTalent platform, but he is also a celebrated author and employee engagement expert. We’re going to chat about how there is nothing new about quiet quitting, the real problem behind this issue, and what organizations (and managers) can do to help support their employees.
It seems like the world is moving faster than ever. From coping with the aftermath of the pandemic and facing economic uncertainty, to technological advances and social unrest – people are dealing with a lot. And it’s no wonder that reports of burnout, stress, and anxiety are on the increase in the workplace. Employee resilience is being tested and it’s difficult to perform to your best in such an overwhelming atmosphere. So how can organizations prioritize wellbeing?
Well joining us on The Shortlist to chat about this is Sara Andrews, the Chief People Officer at the Acacium Group. Sara is passionate about creating positive employee experience and on this week’s show we’re going to dive into this topic, examining how leaders and managers can champion wellbeing while looking at the positive benefits this has for an organization as a whole.
We seem to be at a transition point in the world of work. As we try to shake off the spectre of COVID and face into more economic upheaval, one fact still reigns true – to achieve success, organizations and leaders need to build and nurture a workforce that can help them evolve into the future while also weathering any storms of uncertainty. It’s no easy feat, and old solutions won’t solve new problems, so how do we prepare?
Joining us on The Shortlist to dig into this topic is Christoph Niebel, the President of Pontoon Solutions. As a big advocate for igniting potential and striving for change, Christoph will chat with us about the importance of investing in your people, how L&D can help future-proof your organization through skills development, and why leadership will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the workplace of the future is a better version of the one we have today.
Finding the right talent is one of the toughest things an organization must do right now. There is a huge need to expand the scope of hiring beyond traditional methods and mindsets, to tap into talent pools that would so often be underutilized. Barriers need to be broken down to create access to employment – but what does this actually look like? And how can companies become more innovative in their approach?
On this week’s episode of The Shortlist, we’re chatting with Nick Mailey, the VP of TA at Equinix. Nick has seen huge success in creating career pathways for individuals who perhaps have taken a pause from work, are transitioning from another industry, or are entering the workforce for the first time. We’ll talk about how this changes the standard playbook for hiring, the role of training in driving this approach, and the importance of looking for soft skills when interviewing.
Company purpose has become something of a fashionable prop post-pandemic. Organizations have realized that they need one, but there is a growing trend towards the inauthentic. Cobbling together a purpose that lacks substance is akin to building a house on sand – this unstable foundation simply won't support the positive impact you think it will. So what should companies do?
Well, we've sought the advice of two experts on this topic – Hannah Grove and Jonathan Knowles. Hannah is the non executive director of abrdn, and Jonathan is the Founder of Type 2 Consulting. Together they recently authored the incredible "What is the Purpose of Your Purpose" article for HBR, and they're on the show this week to chat through their findings. We'll talk about: the importance of purpose, the confusion around the term, what organizations and leaders need to do to build an authentic purpose, and how this is linked to talent acquisition.

Even prior to the pandemic and The Great Resignation, all industries have been acutely aware of the ever-growing shortages in labor, talent, and skills. Often terms used interchangeably in the wild, there is actually a significant difference between the three – both in terms of definition, and how organizations need to approach, and remedy, these shortages.
To help us dive into this topic, we’re delighted to welcome Kevin Green, author and CPO at First Bus, to the show. A renowned expert in HR and recruitment, Kevin is going to be chatting with us all about his experience in this sphere. We’ll look at the difference between the labor, talent, and skills shortage, and also discuss how businesses need to specifically tailor their responses to deal with each.

Discussions about gender are omnipresent in society. As we continue to make progress, building our understanding of the human experience, it’s essential to keep these conversations going – particularly in the workplace. Gender identity and expression form a vital component in how people show up at work, and it’s important for organizations, leaders, and colleagues to be informed if we want to create inclusive work environments. But it can often be a tricky topic to navigate.
So to help us with this, we’re delighted to welcome lisa luxx to this week’s episode of The Shortlist. lisa is a poet and activist whose work has been broadcast on Channel 4, BBC Radio, and TEDx. We’ll be chatting about different forms of gender identity in the context of the workplace, examining gendered language, clothing, and policies, and also looking at expressions of allyship.
How often do we put learning and development on the long finger? Despite all the stats and all the importance we place on growing within our roles, one of the greatest barriers to success is time. L&D has become an essential component of a worker’s life and has great benefits for both the employee and employer alike, but carving out dedicated space in an already busy diary is a recurring challenge we all face.
On this week’s show, Sabrina Pittaluga, TA Manager of Experienced Hire Recruiting EMESA at BCG, joins us to chat about how to make time for learning and development. We’ll discuss the importance of L&D, tips and tricks on how to learn continuously, and also tactics on how best to retain and use the knowledge you acquire in training.

After two years of making sure laptop microphones are switched on and internet connections are stable, in-person recruitment events have returned! Last week, SocialTalent was delighted to attend RecFest in Knebworth Park. Our 'Hiring and Talent Management' stage played host to a slew of incredible speakers as we discussed some of the most pressing topics in our industry, from employee engagement and driving inclusion in the workplace, to building hiring cultures and promoting internal mobility.
On this week’s show, we’re going to take you through some of our favourite moments from the event. Alongside Kirstie Kelly, Emma Mirrington and Bill Boorman, we’ll dig deep into the presentations that really struck a chord with us.
While there may be a labor shortage at the moment, talent can still be found as long as organizations know where to look. But even with the increased dialogue around DEI, it’s disheartening to see the number of companies who don’t (or won’t) engage with talent that doesn’t fit a prescribed status quo. And hiring and talent acquisition has a big role to play in this. Learning how to mitigate bias and understand under-represented groups could be the difference-maker in this unique war for talent.
Joining us to chat about this topic is Annie Boneta. A Senior Consultant with Recruiting Toolbox, Annie is passionate about TA and DEI in all its forms. In this show, we’ll talk about the nature of bias in interviews and suggest actionable ways organizations can look to tackle it. We’ll also look at the recent rise in layoffs and how this specifically can affect bias, and practical tips to create the fairest hiring process.

Flexibility has been the constant ask from employees, even prior to the pandemic. So when the genie was let out from the bottle, very few people wanted to return to the traditional ways of working. Hybrid and remote granted that elusive work-life balance and gave people a touch of control, so they could perform to their best and not feel tethered. But if hybrid is here to stay, it’s important that leaders are brought up to speed on how best to support this mode of working.
So we’ve called in an expert – Linda Jonas is the Co-Founder of Cultivayo and has also contributed incredible content to the SocialTalent platform on this very topic. In this episode, we’re going to discuss the importance of reskilling managers for long term success. We’ll look at the role empathy plays in leadership, tips on how to support managers so they don’t burnout and how to build connection, even from afar.

Work is becoming more digital. As the pandemic put us through a crash-course in operating remotely, it only accelerated trends that were already on the horizon. So much so that this oft-discussed ‘future of work’ is perhaps more present than we realise. But how do we ensure our employees feel connected, included and seen in this new reality?
Joining us on The Shortlist to chat about this is Rick Kelley, theHead of Meta Ireland and VP Global Gaming. In this show we’ll discusswhat the Metaverse could mean for integrating work, how the foundations for future leadership practices are being laid right now, and why our approach to DEI needs to evolve along with everything else in the workplace.

The world of work has already gone through some radical changes over the last few years. COVID in particular accelerated so much in terms of how and where we do business. With the meteoric rise in new technology and shifting mindsets with regards to work, it's becoming ever-imperative that organizations look ahead if they want to succeed. But, what will the future of work actually look like?
Joining us to dive into this topic is Ranjit de Sousa, the Founder and MD of The Coalyard – a consultancy that helps future proof organizations. Together, we’ll look at how technology is evolving and the role it’s playing in making the HR space more strategic, the nature of leadership in driving the right kind of change, and finally, the importance of reskilling for solving crucial gaps in a business.

Never before has a ‘work-life balance’ been more of a reality. As we move beyond the spectre of COVID, it’s clear that employees are seeking to carve out careers that can tie in harmoniously with personal and family needs. Work is an important pillar, but it is only one facet – so it’s vital that organizations begin to recognize this and account for it in their employee leave policies. Draconian measures will only serve to alienate potential talent and reduce employee engagement.
Joining us to discuss this is Jen Henderson, the Founder and CEO of TiLT, a SaaS platform that focuses on leave management. We’ll be chatting about the importance of employee leave, its links to boosting wellness within organizations, while also looking at the tricky waters of parental leave.

Regardless of where you sit in an organization, from intern to CEO, we are all susceptible to those nagging feelings of self-doubt. It often crops up when we try new things or fail, and we feel uncomfortable and second guess our abilities. Being slightly overwhelmed in those situations is completely normal – but what happens when this is prolonged? When no matter the qualifications, the experience or track record of success you have, you still feel 'not good enough'? This is imposter syndrome.
Today, we’re going to be chatting with Aimee Bateman, the CEO and Founder of Careercake, about this. We’ll discuss how doubt can hold us back in the workplace, the impact of imposter syndrome on leadership, and also we’ll look at particular strategies to use to help us overcome these feelings.

DEI in the workplace is an ongoing discussion. Every company is trying to find their path to create diverse and inclusive cultures, but it’s true to say that some are more successful than others. Performative acts of DEI are omnipresent – think rainbow flags at Pride, woke-washing, box ticking exercises – these do little to create actual, transformative change. So what can leaders and organizations do to counter this?
Our guest, Jessica Havens, is a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Consultant and Strategist. On this week’s show, she’ll be helping us to identify the difference between surface and actionable DEI change. We’ll examine the issues companies are currently grappling with in this sphere, discuss the importance of budget and structures, and the tricky element of privilege when it comes to leadership and DEI.

The world has seen an incredible amount of disruption over the last two years, and every single sector has been impacted, including Talent Acquisition. In order to thrive, leaders in TA have had to ride these troublesome waves and think strategically about how to best acquire and retain talent in an atmosphere of uncertainty and constant change.
Our guest this week brings a rather unique perspective to this discussion. Having previously worked in the private sector for the majority of his career, Andy Headworth is now the Deputy Director of TA at HM Revenue & Customs. We’ll chat about the differences between recruiting in the public versus private sectors, how closed borders in the UK have forced Talent Acquisition to maximize home talent, and the importance of training and development when looking to solve future skills shortages.

Driving for more diversity, equity and inclusion is unquestionably critical work – but it’s not easy. Every single stakeholder in a company has a role to play in order to move the needle for the better. But TA and leaders in particular hold huge sway in this arena. They are the gatekeepers and decision-makers when it comes to what kind of talent is brought into the business and how they are engaged and nurtured.
Joining us on the show this week to dive into this topic is Kris Clelland. Kris is the Director of Talent Acquisition at Wipro and is also a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Global Council Member. Together with Holly Fawcett, they’ll discuss the importance of building diverse interviewing panels, how to create inclusive job ads, and why management needs training in how to lead and enable a diverse team.

In order for TA teams to be successful in this tight employee market, they must be at the top of their games in terms of hiring. Yet one of the fundamental challenges facing TA at the moment is the sheer difficulty in finding both recruiters and talent. But how do you rise above the fray? How do you position yourself and the organization in prime position to snag and retain talent?
According to our guest this week, it’s all about going back to basics. Brad Cook is the VP of Global Talent Acquisition at Intuitive – a corporation that develops, manufactures, and markets robotic products for minimally invasive surgery. Brad will be chatting to us about the importance of getting the fundamentals right, particularly in terms of outbound search, candidate experience and job descriptions. We’ll also be looking at the importance of data and metrics to diagnose where there may be problem areas in the TA process, so solutions can be found quickly and effectively.

Disability is often seen as a poor relation in the DEI conversation. When agendas are put forward to hire more diverse talent or create work environments that cater to people from underrepresented backgrounds, so often those with both visible and invisible disabilities find themselves at the bottom of this list. But to ignore this cohort is to ignore a whole pool of talent with skills and abilities that can help organizations prosper and grow.
On this week’s edition of The Shortlist, we’re welcoming Yasmin Sheikh to the show. Yasmin is a TEDx speaker and Founder of Diverse Matters and will be speaking with us about disability inclusion in the workplace. We’ll be diving into her own personal story, as well as looking at topics around recruitment and interview processes, adjustments in the workplace, and the language of disability

Many organizations are quick to label themselves as inclusive, but often they struggle to explain what this really means in simple language. They build programs and wax lyrical about its importance, but overlook the behavioral component that is so crucial when it comes to driving and maintaining this culture. And if companies really want to deliver a more inclusive employee experience, they HAVE to examine and change the behaviors of the people around them – and this is especially true for leadership
Joining us on this week’s Shortlist to dig into this topic is Joe Gerstandt. Joe is a renowned Inclusion Strategist, keynote speaker and contributor to the SocialTalent platform. Together, we’ll be chatting about the need to set behavioral expectations for leaders, the importance of accountability, and what inclusive leadership actually looks like.

Microaggressions are omnipresent in the workplace. We’ve all heard them, or even unintentionally said them – those seemingly innocuous comments that in fact reflect assumptions about people based on some element of their identity. This form of discrimination can be so difficult to stamp out too. Often people, both at the giving and receiving end of microaggressions, aren’t even aware it’s happening. But targeted change is needed to address it.
Joining us on the show this week to discuss this is Mo Abdullah. Mo is the Founder & CEO of Culture Energized, a company which specializes in training around DEI and culture transformation. We’ll be chatting about how microaggressions impact the workplace, why people are hesitant to tackle this issue and also dive into actionable advice about building an environment of accountability, trust and empathy.

Networking is something that is often seen by organizations as important, but never truly urgent. We know that being able to network, both internally and externally, has so many benefits – from helping to find customers and attracting diverse talent to sourcing suppliers and creating more community. But no-one ever takes responsibility for the function. Leaders will talk a good game and say networking is critical for success, but there’s rarely any action behind these words. The solution? Well according to our guest Kingsley Aikins, you need to appoint a CNO – Chief Networking Officer.
Kingsley is the CEO of The Networking Institute and a contributor to the SocialTalent platform. Today, he’s going to be talking about why establishing a CNO can help facilitate strategic business outreach and create a culture of personal networking that will build trust and develop a welcoming and prosperous workplace.

Innovation is something that every organization strives for, across the board. Finding new and inventive ways to operate that will optimize processes and bolster growth is mission critical. And this is no less true for those in the talent acquisition sphere. Whether by embracing new philosophies or stepping outside the box, we need to look to the future of TA and envision how this function can adapt and iterate to become better and faster – while also delivering expected results.
So, joining us to cast our thinking into the future is Yasar Ahmad, the Global Vice President of Talent at HelloFresh. Together, we’ll be examining what the next generation of TA looks like, the importance of ideation and how TA can learn from and emulate other disciplines, like the process and structure of software development, for example.

The function of TA is continually evolving. And while hiring the best external candidates will always be the primary focus, it’s becoming increasingly important for TA leaders to think about the role more holistically. It can’t just start and stop with hiring – TA leaders need to be more involved after a person joins a company as well, ensuring a better chance for alignment, retention and success.

John is the Founder and CEO of Recruiting Toolbox and is a renowned expert in the talent space (as well as being one of the most popular presenters on SocialTalent’s e-learning platform!) Proactively attracting the best talent is becoming increasingly mission-critical for organizations. Employees and candidates know exactly what they want from work, and in a sea of high attrition rates and low engagement, it’s the companies who are leveraging a strong brand that are coming out on top in this war for talent. In the wake of COVID and The Great Resignation, it seems like everyone is vying for the same talent. Organizations are fighting multiple battles, trying to retain employees, fill mounting vacancies and cover talent gaps. Paul Phillips is the Global Head of TA at Avanade, a company that is itself experiencing incredible hypergrowth at the moment. In an effort to find this elusive talent, the organization is investing in careers upfront. They have established internal academies to train and develop employees, launching different pilots across the globe to grow alternative talent pools and give more opportunities to candidates and employees. Understanding what your audience wants is crucial, no matter what industry you are in. But when it comes to hiring, often a lot of focus is given to the organization’s mindset and values – the things they want from employees. But if you were to look behind the veil, at what candidates themselves are really searching for in jobs and roles, do you think that the two would be aligned?

Andrew is an author, LinkedIn Changemaker, and Founder of Executive Career Jump – a company that specializes in job search and career progression coaching. Unfortunately, our guest Lori Sylvia, the Founder of Rally Recruitment Marketing, was unable to join us, but never fear, we can’t wait to welcome her to the show in the very near future!
Instead, we have a bit of a retrospective episode for you. Last November, we launched an online event entitled, SocialTalent Live: Hiring at Scale During the Great Resignation. During this, we hosted an array of panels and fireside chats with TA and HR leaders from global organizations all with the aim of unpacking the causes of The Great Resignation and suggesting solutions for lowering attrition rates and scaling hiring efforts. So today, we are going to bring you one of these panel discussions. This particular session sees Barbara Lee, the senior VP of HR at NielsenIQ, and Dr. Bev Kaye, a bestselling author on employee engagement, chat with Jason Lauritsen through the reasons for such a mass exodus of staff and tactics for keeping employees truly engaged.

Creating positive employee engagement can be a rather complex situation. Many factors play a role in how we experience work, but if one thing’s for sure – most companies can do a lot better. From the hiring process to onboarding and beyond, organizations are presented with a plethora of opportunities to make work richer and more memorable, yet invariably fail to capitalize.
Joining us to discuss this topic is New York Times bestselling author and renowned speaker, Dan Heath. We’re honoured that Dan has also become the latest addition to the SocialTalent platform’s faculty of experts, with his new content focussing on the book he co-wrote with his brother Chip – The Power of Moments. With this as a backdrop, Dan is going to share both practical insights and thought-provoking stories into how organizations can boost employee engagement, experience and retention by paying more attention to crucial moments.

As the world grappled with the onset of a pandemic in early 2020, it also rather disappointingly saw an increase in anti-Asian sentiment associated with this. From the disproportionate representation of South-East Asians on news stories regarding COVID to growing reports of verbal and physical abuse and even xenophobic scapegoating from political leaders, it seemed like the virus almost afforded people an excuse or justification for outright racism.
COVID has shone a greater light on many issues in society, and this rise in anti-Asian rhetoric is one that deserves more attention. Joining us on the show today to discuss this topic is Lucy Sheen. Lucy is an accomplished actor, playwright and digital artist who recently contributed to the WeRNotVirus production with her piece entitled “I am not a virus.” Lucy is here to talk with us about the dangers of lazy stereotyping, how historical attitudes have shaped this current upsurge in discrimination and what can be done to push the needle when it comes to improving and expanding Asian representation.

Given everything that has happened over the last eighteen months, it’s not surprising that we’ve essentially gone through an identity crisis around work. Power has shifted from employer to employee as work has changed from somewhere we go to something we do. This in turn has also altered how we prioritize other aspects of ourselves and how we approach work. So what does this mean for employers and recruitment today? Joining Holly Fawcett on the show to unpick this is Robert Mac Giolla Phadraig, the Founder of Talent Summit and CCO of Sigmar Recruitment. We’ll be diving into this topic, looking at what needs to be different about an organization’s value proposition today in order to make them attractive to talent in the future. It’s always important to be on the lookout for underutilized sources of talent. Given how competitive the current market is, being able to attract star candidates is a huge boon for any organization. And there’s one pool in particular that often gets overlooked – the unemployed. With an unemployment rate of around 7% in the EU, this offers a huge opportunity for companies to find amazing employees. And, with minority groups being over-represented amongst the unemployed, this also represents a diverse and creative group of people to attract.
Joining us on the show today is someone who holds this cause very closely – Colin Donnery. Colin is the incoming Group Chief Executive of FRS Network, a co-operative social enterprise with subsidiaries in the recruitment, training and agricultural sectors and is also the Founder / Director of Turas Nua, Ireland's leading provider of employability services that help unemployed people back into the workforce. The role that media platforms, like film and television, play in advancing the DE&I movement cannot be understated. Visual, mainstream representations of diversity help massively to normalize conversations and promote inclusion. But, it’s also never been more important for companies to truly embed this same tactic in how they push for greater diversity. TV and movies are evolving to authentically represent the whole spectrum of humanity, and organizations need to follow suit. Joining us to discuss the impressive way NBCUniversal is championing DE&I is Suzan Vulaj. The VP of Global Talent Acquisition, Suzan will be chatting to us about NBCUniversal’s “Meet the Moment” initiative – a series of internal sessions that promotes education on various topics like implicit bias, social identity, belonging and creating access. There has never been a more crucial time to build a culture of hiring within your organization. Given the ever-escalating number of vacancies, it’s important to ensure that hiring is seen as a team sport. It is a function that should be aligned and woven into the very DNA of a company and not siloed to a single person. In this special edition of The Shortlist, Johnny Campbell looks back on an intriguing and informative fireside chat he had with Kelly Jones, the SVP Global Head of Talent Solutions at Cisco, from our last SocialTalent Live event. Here, Kelly talks about Cisco’s journey with creating a culture of hiring, talent mobility, and the importance of tracking data.

The current talent landscape has never been seen before. As millions of workers have been leaving their jobs, in a phenomenon we know all too well as The Great Resignation, many organizations are scrambling to both backfill open positions and deal with a period of massive growth. Everyone deserves to be their authentic self at work, and in life. But for many trans people, the fear of stigma and discrimination can lead to devastating consequences when it comes to looking for employment, job satisfaction and emotional wellbeing. The drive for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace is perhaps the most important cause for every organization. And while progress has been made, there is still considerable work to be done – on every front. But for this week’s episode of The Shortlist, we’re going to be focusing on race in the context of hiring.
The murder of George Floyd in 2020 reignited conversations about inequality and race, particularly in the US. But racism is a global concern and one that every company should consistently look to address. And as recruiters are the vanguard of talent in organizations, it’s imperative that they understand the importance of lived experience and push to remove bias, prejudice, and discrimination. When we think about executive recruiting, the model often follows a very traditional route that focuses on headhunting talent outside the company with the experience deemed necessary to fulfil a role. But there is an element of this process that is often overlooked at the detriment to success – internal mobility.
Joining us on the show to discuss this is Roopesh Panchasra, the Global Head of Executive TA at Uber. According to Roopesh, we need to put more emphasis on looking at our internal executive communities. In this week’s episode we’ll chat about the importance of intentionality in this sphere, especially when it comes to developing internal talent and thinking ahead to future roles. We’re also going to dive into the idea of ‘leadership currency,’ where transferable skills and particular behaviors should be targeted in internal employees who could be on-track for promotion to these positions.

We speak about diversity, equity and inclusion a lot on The Shortlist because it is such an important thing for every organization to drive. Workplaces need to be environments where ALL people can feel comfortable, accommodated and free from prejudice and discrimination. But we know there is still so much to be done on this front, and it’s crucial to dig into each specific cohort to understand the unique challenges people can face when seeking opportunity. So, this week, we’ll be looking at DE&I specifically through the lens of disability. To help us do this, we’re delighted to welcome Christabelle Feeney, the Director of Employers for Change at The Open Doors Initiative, to the show. Christabelle will be discussing how organizations need to become more accessible for people with disabilities, the importance of continuous learning and how we can support individuals to maximize their potential and create opportunity.

COVID flipped the script for the workplace and talent. We can hardly get through an episode without saying this! And while the pandemic has seen a wave of negative impacts, it also offered opportunity for change. It brought perspective on what’s important and unlocked a huge amount of potential for a new way of operating. People are altered since COVID and if organizations want to attract and retain key talent, they have to recognize and plan for this. Joining us on this week's show is Ger Finn, the Senior Director of People Strategy, Operations and Innovation at Twitter, to discuss the inevitable evolution of the EVP. We’ll be looking at how priorities for workers have shifted, why community is so important in a remote/hybrid world and, also, what can (and should) be done to retain employees in this current atmosphere of mass exodus and resignations.

t’s difficult to stem the tide of technical innovation. In every facet of our lives, technology is constantly being developed to improve processes and increase efficiency. And recruitment is certainly not immune from these advances either. Every year, new tools are being created with the promise of helping organizations find and hire the right people in a manner that’s faster and cheaper than ever before. This progress has been especially felt in the field of candidate assessment where algorithms and A.I. analyze everything from writing patterns to tone of voice and nonverbal behaviors. But there is still a lot to understand on this front. In an effort to help answer some of these questions, we welcome Nick Johnston, Director of TA at PWC Middle East, to The Shortlist. With over 20 years experience in the hiring sector, Nick will be chatting to us about the growth and implications of using A.I. in your candidate assessments, examining how it can both be of benefit and a danger.

The world of work has changed irrevocably. And as we continue to navigate the choppy waters of the pandemic, it’s becoming ever more important for organizations to plan with uncertainty in mind. After pivoting so quickly in the wake of COVID, we have to now take stock – we must look back at what worked, what didn’t, what core elements are missing and adjust business strategies to facilitate more of the unexpected.
Joining us on the show today is Kevin Mulcahy, author of The Future Workplace Experience. Hugely knowledgeable about this topic, Kevin will be giving us insights on how organizations need to future-proof themselves. From looking at new corporate cultures to creating proactive plans for recruiting within a more volatile business environment, Kevin has a wealth of experience to share on all these fronts.

Millions of US workers are resigning from their jobs in a phenomenon that’s being referred to as the “Great Resignation.” A variety of reasons have been cited for this exodus, ranging from the effects of long-term lockdown giving people more clarity on their future, to disgruntlement over poor working conditions and lack of flexibility. And while this is currently a very US-centric issue, the trend looks set to spread globally. Organizations will need to get ahead of these problems if they don’t want to experience mass attrition. But, how do you plan for this? Joining us this week is Steve Mair, the Vice President of Talent Acquisition at Procore – a construction software company that is currently in a phase of rapid growth. He’ll be giving us a temperature check on the “Great Resignation,” looking at the different issues, like the current lack of recruiters available and the severe implications this period will have in the tech industry while also providing us insight into how best to stem this tide.

Leaders make a huge difference in any organization. They set the tone, have the ability to rally employees and become a linchpin for success. But in the charity sector, there is often much more at stake. So it’s imperative that leaders of NGOs can both deliver on results and inspire action. Which makes hiring them a trickier and complex proposition.
So with that in mind, we’re delighted to be speaking with Clark Bowers, the Director of Talent Acquisition at World Vision. With over 20 years of recruiting experience in this arena, Clark will be sharing with us how he transformed TA in the organization by implementing a top grading methodology to secure dynamic leadership positions for roles across the world. It’s the next installment in our summer series here on The Shortlist, and in this episode, we’re going to be looking back on our event, SocialTalent Live: Onboarding in a Virtual World, from earlier in the year. We’re broadcasting a talk from Anjana Sreedevi, the Global Onboarding Design and Delivery Leader at IBM, about how she and the company redesigned their approach to remote onboarding during the pandemic. And the key to their success on this front? Infusing the entire process with empathy. We’ll also be looking into the live poll results from the event to see how hundreds of companies view the health and importance of their approach to virtual onboarding.
There can be absolutely no denying the need for diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. But, when we use the term “diversity,” it’s important to remember what this actually means. Types of diversity are theoretically infinite. They encompass every characteristic that appears with variations among a group of people. So, if we are to make organizations truly inclusive, we have to look beyond a limited definition of diversity and expand the scope to include EVERYTHING like socioeconomic backgrounds, cognitive diversity, class etc.
While it can seem daunting, our guest on the show this week will help break it down. Jen Lambert is the Chief Strategy Officer at TERRA Staffing Group. She’s here to shine a light on the forgotten parts of diversity, show the importance of social mobility in terms of solving recruitment challenges and will also give examples of how certain companies are nailing this approach

It’s been just over a year since the murder of George Floyd sparked a renaissance for diversity and inclusivity tactics in organizations around the world. But there is still so much work to be done on this front.
In this special edition of The Shortlist, we want to look back on a panel originally broadcast in November 2020 at SocialTalent Live. It brought together four leaders from big organizations – SAP, Oracle, Sodexo and OLX Group – to discuss the practical things they are doing to advance DEI. It covers everything from metrics and considerations they have as leaders to the obstacles that face DEI initiatives. It was an insightful conversation and one I’m delighted to bring to you during this show.

There is still a huge amount of work to be done when it comes to truly embedding diversity, equity and inclusion into the workplace – especially in relation to creating employment for those who are marginalized. So, for this week’s episode of The Shortlist we’re delighted to be shining a spotlight on people who are determined to make actual change happen.

And we also welcome Richard Bradley, the Managing Director UK & Ireland at the renowned recruitment company Kelly Services who has teamed with SocialTalent and Open Doors to train people in sourcing and provide an opportunity for employment.

An organization’s biggest asset is its workforce. But people who are neurodiverse often struggle to fit the conformist profiles sought by employers. Things like inaccessible job descriptions with company jargon or standard interview procedures can all be a challenge for the neurological conditions, and belie the incredible skills and attributes they often possess. So, how do we correct this?
On this week's show we welcome Theo Smith, the VP of Customer Acquisition at Zinc Work. Theo is also a podcast host and author of the upcoming book “Neurodiversity at Work.” An expert in the field, he will be giving us some background on neurodiversity in the workplace as well as some actionable advice on how to make processes more inclusive and open so organizations can benefit from this talent pool.
