Here at Mandarin Baptist Church, we are the generations declaring the redemptive story of God, on everyday mission.
The gospel cannot be fully lived out or experienced alone or by observation alone. Living out the gospel requires active participation and partnership. Life transformation can be catalyzed by the seeds of the pastor's platform ministry, but it is cultivated and sustained by the soil of biblical community. When the whole body plays their part the church grows in the most important way -- in love.
Lasting spiritual transformation happens when we plant the seed of God's Word in the rich soil of biblical community. Four key nutrients that make up Biblical community are Joy, Hesed, Group Identity, Healthy Correction. Not only should we look inward to see how rich our soil is, but we should be asking if we are helping make other peoples soil as rich.
In a world where the Word of the Lord is so rare, we should be making it more common. We cannot remember what we have never known. My practice is to know and to walk in the ways of your truth for all of my days.
God's faithful love engenders faithfulness. Faithfulness is what we repeatedly do. What will you repeatedly do in response to God's love?
When we gather in Jesus’ name, we bear witness before the powers that be that you cannot be bought. Your heart is steadfast, your resistance potent and your vision glorious. Repentance and worship become a rhythm, and idols are resisted and laid down.
Our identity is not our own to form. The character of Christ is ever becoming our character as we are transformed into His image and conformed to His likeness. As we practice the rhythms of knowing Jesus; becoming as Jesus; and living as He lived, we are transforming into image bearers.
As stewards, we celebrate the Gospel here; we celebrate redemption, restoration, healing, and the things of God. Even in the middle of difficult times, we choose to celebrate the mercies of God. "Celebration is godly defiance in the culture of doubt" - Jon Tyson.
Not only do we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus at Easter, the central point of our faith, but because of what He's done, we celebrate our own resurrection. He rose from the grave to life, and raises us to new life with Him. Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life!
Christ’s own joy, comfort, happiness and glory are enlarged as he shows grace and mercy; as he pardons and relieves; as he brings comfort to his own. - Gentle and Lowly
We are a people who are coming to know Jesus; becoming like Jesus; and living as Jesus lived as we make our way on this journey.
According to scripture, we should be explorers and stewards of the mysteries of God. When we lose sight of the Gospel of Christ, we are truly missing the central aspect of the church He began. We should constantly be preaching and responding to the mystery of God, which is the Gospel, in our lives. We should then steward it well and make it our focus.
We must constantly ask of ourselves, "Are we a place where those in the community know that they will experience belonging?" Nothing and no one supersedes the Gospel. It will change us, transform us, and challenge us as God is the one who gives the growth. As we mature in faith we will search our hearts to evaluate how we have been complicit in under-playing the Gospel.
In First Corinthians, we see how Paul is calling for the believers to mature in their faith. They made a big deal of small insignificant issues the church faced. When we look at some of what they were struggling with, we actually can see struggles the church today struggles with. To sum up some of what Paul was saying, we need to get over ourselves and realize that our own wisdom is nothing compared to Christ.
According to the book of Acts, we see what ruled the lives of the church at its inception: the apostles' teaching, the fellowship of believers, communion, and prayer. These are things that the global church should still be devoted to just as much as it was so long ago. As we are devoted to those, our fellowship will always be space to be with Jesus; become like Jesus; and do what he did to live to the full.
In encountering the Word of God made flesh, and now engaging with the scriptures, we should be asking 'So what should we do?'. How are we supposed wrestle with the texts found in scripture? What should be our aim, or our response to Christ coming? We should live a life filled with consistent repentance.
Ann Voskamp says, "Any time and place that you make space for Jesus, you become a womb for the goodness of God." Mary became a sacred space, and we too can become a sacred space for our Savior. Let us display His goodness, and grace all around us. We should use this season to remind us of the effects of making space for Jesus. It is much bigger than just a Christmas season.
All throughout scripture we see that God’s methods and His timing point to His strength not ours. No matter what we face, or how long we wait, we also see that God always fulfills His promises. Believers should then respond in faith when God calls us to be a part in His redemptive plans. As people anticipating the impossible let us live in a posture of faith and submission.
The ‘prophetic perfect’ promise of Isaiah was a steadfast truth for the people of Israel for 750 years. There is a posture of faith in hope, in the midst of all that life brings, ‘look up’. These promises from Isaiah are anchors. May you live in the prophetic perfect posture, stirred in unending promises of our God in Christ.
In Hebrews it tells us that we should be thankful because we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken. So while circumstances are tough and we may feel we are surrounded by struggle and sorrow, we should remember that what God is doing is a far greater story that we might not yet see. In the midst of the storms, trials, and chaos we should pause and thank Jesus for who He is and what He is doing, but also knowing that there is a bigger story He's unveiling. Lord, please open our eyes.
Is Jesus an experiential reality of our faith, our tradition, our family or is He simply a historical study? We see Paul asking God not for assistance, but for the Spirit to completely take over. In our own lives we should be willing to give up our control and see the Spirit fully take over. We are a people of revelation and mystery. Let us stoke the fire of what God is doing.
Our posture throughout life should be one that demonstrates and helps increase faith in the power of God. Whatever situation, or 'cell' that you find yourself in is an opportunity to reveal God's story. Don't let the story stop. You cannot experience the resurrection apart from the crucifixion.
How do we orient our lives around the living Christ and define our identity in who we are in Him? Jesus is wisdom from God for us. The only thing we can boast in, is in the Lord.
The church is a community of Jesus-followers who are becoming perfectly one. We should be asking ourselves if we are surrounded by a group of people who are orienting their life toward the things of Christ and living that out in this world. The story upon which we take our stand; by which we are being saved; of which we hold fast, is the story of Jesus crucified, Jesus resurrected. Nothing and no one else.
As we begin this journey through the first letter to the Corinthian church, we see Paul approaching this church with love rather than pointed fingers. Eventually he will address their struggles, inward fighting, and sinful lifestyles but something to take note of is how he is calling out what's within them, and how God sees them. Like Christ does with us, he sees past our sin and guilt, and brings us out of where we are found. We too, have a calling to speak the future into the present, based upon your confidence in the gospel of Jesus Christ and His commitment to confirm the works of His hand. May we grow in confidence of this calling and see the confirming work of His hand.
There is a beautiful letter to the Church at Corinth written by Paul. We see as we read, that he loves the people who make up this church and longs that they live with Christ as their center. As those that he loves stumble and struggle on this journey called life, they find themselves surrounded by an abundance of struggles, many by their own poor choice in path taken. Paul does what a loving leader always does, he comes to them with open arms, not pointed fingers. He invites them into the heart of the gospel. He elevates Jesus as the central figure in this unfolding story. And, he invites them to a life abounding in the gospel. This letter is a journey of the spiritual work among spiritual people in the midst of a beautiful mess. Let’s venture in to the love of God in Christ for His people.
One of the many tragedies of sin is the fractured friendship between God and man. But the beauty of the Gospel message is Jesus steps into our mess and is Himself the way for true and real friendship with God. He then invites us into His work of reconciliation, ministering to the broken world around us.
The picture we see of Jesus is one whose love for his people causes him to run toward the broken, desperate, sin-stained, guilty. He steps into the darkness and says there is so much more I have in store for you. Dane Ortlund said, "The intercession of Christ is his heart connecting our hearts to the Father's heart."
Dane Ortlund said "It's impossible for the affectionate heart of Christ to be over celebrated, made too much of, exaggerated. It cannot be plumbed. But, we should surely give great effort." When you look at the life of Christ, you will see the way He lives truly proves His heart. His heart, is one full of compassion that moves toward the ones in need. Do you know who you're talking to?
In Matthew chapter 11, Jesus gives us a glimpse of his heart as he calls himself 'gentle and lowly'. Unfortunately people often overlook the very heart of Christ as they emphasize other characteristics. But this is who HE says he is. The next question we need to ask ourselves, is 'who do we say that he is'. When we answer that question correctly, we will be able to look over our lives and see his hand, and his heart moving toward us constantly.
God allows us to go to places where the weight of desperation presses against our hearts. God is drawing each of us back into the center of what is on His mind and His heart. Perhaps, we are those who breathe life into weary and dry souls. We have experienced hopelessness and doubt so that we will speak life into those He brings us who are experiencing the same things. We are witnesses to the redemptive work of the gospel. He whispered life into our soul, so that we may do the same for others.
Do you wonder about what God has already completed in your current circumstance that we don't yet see? We shall anchor our souls in truths of God. Let us put what we do know about God above what we do not know about the days ahead.
As followers of Christ in this world we should find our delight in His Word, and our faith should be emboldened. We cannot determine our circumstances, but whatever we face we are imprisoned to hope. The only thing we have to do to drift is nothing!
Many things fight to control our lives such as custom, culture, country; but let it be truth that rules our lives. Truth is not confined solely to profound words written on fine parchment by ancient scribes, but it is bound up in a person, the Lord Jesus Christ. You might go to church, be familiar with scripture and stories, but have you have a personal, life changing encounter with the Truth of God?
Our actions and thought pattens reveal where our hearts are. We must be anchored in truth that is bigger than you. If we delight in the word of God, it will consume all that we are.
The only thing that you have to do to drift, is nothing. In life we must be anchored to something bigger than ourselves, and sturdy in its foundation. What are you anchored to?
More than anything else, God uses people to heal people. We have the opportunity and responsibility to be that voice of love, healing, and encouragement in peoples lives. There is never a time when encouragement isn't needed.

Take in Colossians 1.3-14. What do you learn about encouragement from Paul? Encouragement speaks life; gives hope; shares truth and assures that one is known and loved.
Get creative and list as many ways that can encourage someone.
Pray for God to give you an open mind and heart toward speaking life (encouragement)
DO IT! Write the text; make the call; send the note; start the car… Speak and give life!
There is never a time when encouragement isn’t needed.
Who has carried you to a deeper place in Jesus? Probably, there are quite a few people who have helped you along the way.
Take the initiative to contact them and thank them for their encouragement.
Tell them how God used them in your life.
A Redemptive family is an encouraging family.
Pray that the Spirit of God infuses a culture of encouragement among and throughout our Mandarin family.
A generous faith family gives regardless of their circumstances. They give from their hearts because God gave first. We should be eager to give, especially when we see Christ glorified, and His Kingdom advancing all around us.

Without confession, there is no culture of forgiveness; Without forgiveness, there is no confession. We know that there is nothing that can be known, revealed, exposed or confessed that has not already been covered by the life, sacrifice and victory of Jesus. As the body of Christ, we should be freely guiding others into the grace in kindness of Jesus.

Our Faith family must pursue honesty before God and one another to live out all that God has intended. A redemptive community must recognize their desperate need for God, and has a deep level of honesty & vulnerability. We will find power, comfort, and grace in honesty before God and one another.

Transparency before others starts with being transparent before God. Is there something your need to lay at God’s feet? Is there a sin to confess, a burden you are holding on to, or brokenness you are experiencing?

We were never intended to walk this rough journey alone. We all need nurturing people to come around us, and walk with us. Our gatherings are with the intent to stir Gospel confidence, mutuality in submission to one another, and a commitment to one another.

This passage captures why our faith family needs to be nurtured; what needs to be nurtured within us and how this nurturing takes place.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus — he has inaugurated for us a new and living way through the curtain (that is, through his flesh ) — and since we have a great high priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful. If the church is God's people, then we should be where the world looks to for peace, love, comfort, wholeness, and healing. We should mirror the very character of Jesus to those who are part of the body, but also to those all around us. The true image of the church should create wonderfor what has been done in the past, provide hope, possibility, and purpose in the present, and cast our imagination toward God's intended future.

Ephesians 2.7 teaches that we are the image of God’s riches in kindness. Even more, we put this truth on display to those around us; throughout the heavens; and into the ages to come. This is quite incredible wonder that is beheld among us. Since this is true, what are we putting on display as the Mandarin family? We will always see the goodness and kindness of Jesus in the midst of sinners and sufferers. We should not only call Him good when we are feeling the good; we should call Him good even in the unknown. We will be experiencing the grace and goodness of God for all of eternity, and we will never see the end of His love toward us.

You and I are made alive in Christ that he might lavish us in his immeasurable grace. Because his grace is immeasurable and on display, your failures and flaws can never outstrip his grace in kindness. How does this bring freedom for your soul? How does a deeper understanding of His grace in kindness provide an authenticity in your relationship with Jesus?… with others?

We are more than sinful, we were completely dead in our sin and transgressions. Jesus, not only gives us life, He gives us new mercy every single day. We are all covered in sin, guilt, and shame, but His mercy is so much more. He is rich in mercy, and He lavishes His love on us. That is who this Jesus is.

- How should you respond to God, who is rich in mercy and lavish in love?
- When have you experienced God turning a grave (pain; sorrow; betrayal; sin; shame; hurt) into a garden? Is that needed today... now…at this time? Meet Him in His mercy and through His lavish love.
- Spend a few moments and move upstream from verse 4 and take in Ephesians 2.1-3. Speak with Jesus about your need for rich mercy and lavish love based on this scripture. Now, move upstream to verses 5 - 6 and be reminded of your position in Him. You have an abundance in Christ. He is good and you are His. Pause and worship! Return to Ephesians 2.4 and find rest in rich mercy and lavish love. As you leave this conversation, leave your grave clothes behind and walk into the gardens of purpose, passion and conviction that He has in store for you. Yes and Amen!

Why do we so often run or hide because of our sin and shame? We should come out of the hiding to experience the Heart of Christ towards us. The joy of Christ is being made complete as His people come to Him to be made whole. He rejoices in seeing His people forgiven, made whole, new, and complete.
Jesus showed us that following God is more important than the rules the the religious people enforced. Looking at His life here on earth, it was defined by compassion, love, grace and mercy. The compassion of Christ defines His heart, and should shape our lives. True compassion doesn't stand still, but moves towards action.

Who He Is….The Heart of Jesus (1) Easter 2021

The heart is the central animating feature of all that we are and all that we do.
Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30 (CSB)

What do you think of when you hear the name Jesus? Do you know Him as loving. open. welcoming. kind. understanding. compassionate? His heart for you is gentle and humble. In what ways can you continuously ‘come to Jesus’?

The qualifying attribute of a person that is to come to him is to be weary and to be burdened.
The minimum bar to be enfolded into the embrace and care of Jesus is to open yourself to Him. Spend some time in communion with your savior, taking steps of vulnerability with the one who is gentle and humble. Talk with Him about what is wearying you and what burdens your soul. -
What do you gain in coming to Him?
Rest. You find rest for your soul. His rest is a gift and not a transaction. Why is it important that you know the heart of Jesus?
His yoke is kind and His burden is light. Happy Easter!
The church is known for many things right now, but over all things, the church should be known for love. We should reflect the perfect love of God, as Jesus brought us into the 'Us-ness' of the Trinity. According to scripture, we are one church, one body of Christ, one movement, one 'Us'. This is what Jesus was praying for in John 17.

Are we too busy living FOR Jesus, when we really need to live FROM Him? Our lives, as followers of Jesus, should be lived out of the overflow of His presence, and His truth. Perhaps the greatest thing that He will ever show us is Himself. We are transformed by His word, and now we live as His representatives in this world.

May we experience and enter in to Jesus' joyous delight, so that it is fulfilled and overflows. -John 17.13. Often, we are so busy living FOR Jesus, when we are truly invited to live FROM Him. What is the difference? Explore ways that you might live from the overflow… life from Jesus? Share these ideas with a few people.

We are made holy by His truth. Your word is truth. -John 17.19, 17 Those who hear God’s voice best are people who know His word most. We become a living ‘quiet time’ Since it is true that we become who we behold, how can you be intentional about seeking more Jesus? What is a first step that you will take today in pursuit of Him... consider inviting a few friends on the journey?

Jesus has commissioned us to represent him. -John 17.18 We represent who we know. More than what Jesus is asking you to do for Him; build for Him; create for Him, He is inviting you to life in Him. When that is your way, Jesus will show up in places in your life that you never imagined. He will move in ways to show Himself strong! When is a time that Jesus has shown Himself strong through you? As you go and remember who and whose you are, imagine what God might do through you as you represent Him….as you imagine, journal the possibilities of your life, lived from Him…tell a few friends of your God-dreams.
Remember, Jesus will do more than we can every ask or imagine.
Oh, what a Savior! Dream BIG!
We are on the winning side of eternity, yet have done nothing to contribute to that victory. It is entirely based upon Gods work of salvation. His prayer is not that we try harder, or do better, but that we fully trust in what He accomplished for us, and how He is continually working in us even now. If we are deeply convinced of this gospel of Jesus, it will unite us under His name.

Take a moment to read through Acts 7. What are some things that surprise you? What is something you take away from this scripture?
How are you actively apart of His story right now? If you are not engaging in God’s story right now, what needs to change? What is holding you back from living on mission?
Has there ever been a moment where you didn’t listen to a prompting of the Holy Spirit? What might be God leading you towards right now?
Stephen had no clue how his step of obedience would impact the kingdom of Christ. The gospel scattering to the nations. The conversion of Saul to Paul and the flourishing of the church. What circumstances do you think God could be using now to impact the Kingdom of God? In what ways do you hope God will use your life?
If you are doing this with another person would you pray for three things over them.
1) That they would engage in God’s story.
2) They would be sensitive to the Spirit and God at work in our lives.
3) They would have a life of eternal impact.
The prayer of Jesus is His heart connecting our heart with the Father's heart. Nothing at all can separate us from the love of God, as Jesus is constantly and passionately moving toward us, working in us, and interceding for us. Jesus' rescue and salvation reaches all the way into the darkest crevices of our souls.

The work of Jesus on your behalf is a finished work. He has completed your salvation, rescue, forgiveness, present, future and the eternal. It is finished. Jesus’ current work is to pray for you. Jesus always lives to intercede for you. (Hebrews 7.25). He is praying that you see and that you believe what He has already completed. What is your first thought, as you learn that Jesus lives to pray for you? Perhaps, Jesus knows that our hearts are in need of revelation. We are in need of eyes to see and ears to hear all that is completed in you. Will you lift your face and your hands, asking that you would take in all that He has completed on your behalf? It may be wise to create a journal for all the He will reveal to you through worship and in the Word.

Because the word of Christ was received and believed, there was an ever increasing certainty about Jesus. In what ways has God ‘fastened His work firmly in your heart'?
When we read John 17, we see a glimpse into the heart of Jesus. His heart is full of passion and focus. His heart is aimed on giving glory to the Father, but also on the love He has for his followers. Even then, we were in His heart, His mind, and His prayer.

‘The Son of God… loved me and gave Himself for me.’ His heart for me could not sit still.

Wonder… In this prayer, the heart of Jesus is one of glory, beauty, eternity and promise. His posture is that of awe. The Hebrew word for His uplifted face AND hands is Yadah. It’s the posture of transcendent worship. Will you spend the week asking that our God stir the wonder for His eternal in your soul? Be intentional in responding in worship. Perhaps, even stretch a bit in lifting your face and hands in awe. In doing so, you will surely find commonality with your Redeemer, Jesus.

Redemption… You are known, pursued, purchased and redeemed by Jesus. His heart is for you. His heart could not be still in heaven nor could it the slowed on the road to the cross. In this prayer, Jesus defines Himself as before time began, while also making His way into the narrow corridors of your soul. How does knowing His heart give clarity to your own? What does it mean to you to be loved relentlessly? What is a proper response to such love?

Complete… the work is done, yet His story still unfolding. How does that impact your hope and expectancy? How does walking in the mystery of His story shape your view of life? What about the spark of your imagination as you consider that there is FAR more…? In what way is a posture of worship (Yadah) important in light of Jesus’ unfolding story?

In Jesus, we are not who we once more. All things are made new in Jesus. It is all through Him, and by Him, and ultimately for Him. This is who we are, and this is what we pass on from generation to generation to generation.

God is making all things new. He is changing our ‘name’ (Ephesians 1.1), which is the totality of our character into His own. How is Jesus making Himself at home in you? In what ways is God changing your character, priorities, passions, purpose and steps? Take a moment and celebrate the ways that He is planting His heart into yours.

As Pastor Mark talked about David and the passion that He had for the name of God, he spoke about the ‘roar’ of Goliath. Goliath’s cry was, ‘come and fight. Is there anyone who will step into the arena.' Most shrunk back, but not David. What is it about David’s character that made him different? What was His focus? I Samuel 17 is a beautiful telling of a man who knows why he is on this earth and WHO is fighting on his behalf (v.45)…. What do you learn from David about God’s character and your purpose? How do we live and move in the strength of the Lord? (Read Ephesians 1.3-6 as a reminder)

This will be written for a generation to come, and a people who have not yet been created will praise the Lord. Psalm 102.18. We are living a story of people teeming with confidence in our God. Read Ephesians 3.1-14 1- Pray that God will remind you of your new name and the fullness of your identity in Him. 2- Thank Him for who He is and what He has done as you make your way through the Scripture. 3- Ask Him to forgive you for seeking your identity and fulfillment outside Him. 4- With open hands and heart, trust Him with your life. Ask Jesus that His life determine and define your own.
In Christ, we are not who we once were.
As a church, and as individuals, we were placed here in this world and season for a purpose. We might never see all the results of our lives fully devoted to Christ, but we are called to live on mission and to befriend faithfulness. As a people after the heart of God, we should find our delight in the Lord, and we will find ourselves faithful to His purposes.
Scripture: Psalm 37:3-5
If you are leading in the middle of this, there is a reason that you are leading in the middle of this.
1- How is your thinking shifted, when you move from a ‘goal-setting’ faith to becoming a 'person of revelation’? The psalmist writes that ‘without revelation, people run wild.’ (29.18) Because God sets the purposes; defines the direction; prepares the way, what is your role as you trust in the Lord and as you do what is good? (Psalm 37.3-5) How will you discover more of His character?
2- We delight in Jesus: He shapes our hearts. Practically, what does it look like to delight in Jesus? Describe God’s heart or His character…as you venture through the Scripture, journal what you see of His heart or His passion. Invite the Spirit of God to form this same heart's delight within you? Let this be an on-going pursuit of the heart of our God.
3- We are to dwell where God has placed us and to befriend faithfulness. When you look behind you, at the trail of your life, what do you see? Faithfulness is most often seen as you look back. In light of what you see, what do you need to do more? To adjust and do differently? to re-ignite? To stop?
Trust in the Lord and do what is good; dwell in the land and live securely. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. - Psalms 37:3-5 (CSB)
Who we are as individuals, and as a church, is not determined by external forces; it is by the indwelling Holy Spirit within us. He is our internal supply, and we should abide in Jesus. When we start to let go of our desire to be in control of our lives, we will begin to see Gods wonders in and through us.

Pastor Mark talked about two lakes in the Keystone/ Melrose area. One thriving and filled with life and the other, receding and drying up. The difference is that one has an internal supply and the other does not. Jesus spoke to His disciples in this way: I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me. -- John 15:5 (CSB)
In light of this truth, Pastor Mark closed his teaching with these questions:
- Within our Mandarin family, what gives evidence of the internal work of the Spirit?
- What are habits that cut trails for the Word to be alive among us?
- When your life and scripture compete, have you already said ‘yes’ to the Word as truth?
- Knowing that we offer nothing apart from Christ, what is one step that you will make today to rekindle this gift of God?
Jesus has not invited us to populate a church to make our dreams come true. Our dreams, much like the early disciples, are always too small. We are here to fulfill God’s work. His dreams. His plans. That is the only abundance that we seek; that he gain glory in our lives and through His church.
As we enter the new year, we evaluate our mission: to demonstrate God's love to a broken world. We are called to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. This will lead us to multiply and reproduce that kind of love in our faith family, but also our community.
Scripture - Psalm 145: Matthew 22.37-39; Matthew 28.18-20
1- The most important idea ever given is that we ‘love God with our heart and soul; our mind and strength.’ (Matthew 22)
- If it is true that you love what you know, how are you growing in the knowledge of God? Consider the various pursuits of God described in Matthew 22. How are you doing in pursuit of Him?
- Venture to Philippians 3.7-14 and sit down with a man whose sole desire is to know Christ. Read and Learn; Ponder and Apply.
2- I will speak of your splendor and glorious majesty and your wondrous works. They will proclaim the power of your awe inspiring acts and I will declare your greatness. - Psalm 145.5 - 6
* You are called to incite wonder and to fuel passion
- How is God using you to incite wonder that is beyond your greatest imagination? Talk about this… Remove your limits… Ask for revelation to see more of Him… increase your view of God… speak that beautiful view into others.
- How is God using you to fuel passion in the hearts of those around you? You are called, every single day, to serve and to love the world with God’s restoration hope at your core. Then, to fuel this passion in others. Talk about this…. Live and teach mission… do the work of ministry…be the church… multiply His work….
3- This will be written for a generation to come, and a people who have not yet been created will praise the Lord. - Psalm 102.18 Will you incite wonder and fuel passion within a generation that may never see your face? Lay the foundation of passion for our God and for His mission. Consider the praise of generations and begin to live in such a way that you may just incite wonder and fuel passion generations from now. Wow!
You are called, every single day, to demonstrate God’s love to a broken world.
We can all tend to forget, or move past things quickly and so easily. So as we celebrate the birth of Jesus through the Christmas season, we also should be reminding ourselves of the death and resurrection of Christ. Communion is not something we do only in remembrance as we look back. Communion is something that helps to unify us, focus us, and is a constant reminder of the Gospel we so desperately need.

1) Pause and reflect on this past year. What is something that you learned about yourself? What did you learn about God? What did God want you to learn from the events of this past year? As you reflect on this be sure to grab a journal or note pad and write down some of these things
2) Why is unity among the body of Christ so important? How does communion bring us together?
3) What about reflection is difficult? But why is important? As you reflect on Christ and your life is there anything significant you would be willing to share?
4) When thinking about the Gospel what excites you the most? What are you most thankful for? Take a moment to thank God for this gift!
5) As we enter into a new year consider creating a new family rhythm of doing communion together… this could be at a meal weekly, or once a month. Consider the joy of reflecting on the gospel together as a family.
Isaiah 9:6 is one of the most used passages of scripture especially during the advent season. As we look at the time and context this was written, we will see a hope filled prophecy in the midst of a societal upheaval and captivity. But the one who is coming, brings a new, unimaginable Kingdom. And when we discover more of this King, we discover more of who we are: sons and daughters of God.

1- Spend some time in Luke 2.25-38. What do you learn about worship from Simeon and Anna? Talk about their character traits and how those traits postured their life as enduring worshippers? How is God developing your life and your preparations as a worshipper? What could be a first next step to deepen as a worshipper?
2- Luke 2.35 reads that Jesus foray to earth reveals the thoughts and hearts of many. The psalmist calls for an undivided heart for each of us. What are your answers for these questions from our gathering this week. How can I endure in worship, even in the trials and challenges that daily come my way? How can I prepare the way to be the true worshipper for which I was formed? As my heart and soul repeatedly sings the Glorious Hallel (Psalm 136), how can might this bring back into focus a sense of the unending and faithful love of God? Imagine what God will reveal as we grow as worshippers.

* What will you begin today (and, maybe stop doing today) as you orient your life around watching for God at work and posturing to join with Him?
Micah lived in chaos and was surrounded by those who had little or no concern about the ways of God. Yet, his life declaration was ‘As for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord.’ Will you pray that his tribe will increase and that you might become one of them?

Consuming Ambition Week 3
1) Reread Acts 1:6-8. What stands out to you in these verses? What challenges you? Look at the question by the disciples. What is surprising about Jesus’ response?
2) A missionary by the name of Henry Martyn said “His last command should be our first concern. The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of Missions and the nearer we get to him the more intensely missionary we must become.” Why do so many believers struggle with sharing their faith? Is it a knowledge problem or is it something else?
3) The three circles diagram is a way you can share the Gospel. What about it is easy? What about it is hard? How does your story of faith fit into it?

4) Our greatest wounds, are the greatest opportunities for us to see God’s grace in our lives, and often our greatest tool to share with others their need for Jesus. Why is it powerful to share about the brokenness we have in our own lives?

Talk with God about what you are learning, thanking Him for the truth of this letter, asking Him questions, inviting Him transform your life in Truth, engaging in repentance…. 1) Read and Think… Read one chapter of 2 Timothy each day. Open a journal and Think… Ponder… Meditate. Turn the words over in your heart and mind. Consider the abundance of truth in each chapter. Write insights, truth about God, truth about yourself, needed change, and hopes as you allow the Scripture to form Christ within.
2) When you read 2 Timothy 2:14-26, what are some hard truths you hear? What grabs your attention from the text?
3) Paul challenges Timothy to stay focused on the truth of scripture. Why is hyper focus on the truth of scripture important in our lives? How does staying focused on Truth help us stay focused on our mission? How does it help us avoid some of the traps we encounter in this world?
4) Why is our purity important? How does if impact those closest with us? How does it effect our ability to witness?
5) This passage talks about avoiding arguments but at the same time Paul is confronting false teachings. What kind of “disputes” are worthwhile for believers to get involved in? What are not worthwhile? Give examples.
6) These verses are not simply a things to do or not to do, but demonstrate a life living in the hope of leading others to repentance. Is your life focused on this mission? What things are distracting you from the mission we have been given? What is one thing that will change in your life because of this scripture?

Scripture to Remember: 2 Timothy 3.1-9; Psalm 15
But know this: Hard days will come…. - 2 Timothy 3.1 In these hard days, every one of us needs a Paul!1- Who is one of your ‘heroes’? Talk about what makes this person a ‘hero’? Why are ‘heroes’ important? If it’s true that everyone needs a Paul (and it is true), how would you describe a spiritual hero.. one who shows you the way of Christ?
2- Paul tells us that we can anticipate hard times in these last days. He, then, describes a sea of sin in which those who are supposed to be heroes are swimming. How does the moral failure described in 2 Timothy 3.1-5 do harm to Jesus’ church? When have you been hurt by the church? When have you left a wound because of your sin? Did you experience or provide restoration? Are there steps of restoration that you need to take?
3- Paul tells us to ‘avoid those swimming in this sea of sin’. Perhaps, Paul was suggesting that they are not to be the anchors for our soul; that their influence is not what we allow to prevail. Instead, we anchor in the gospel of God’s grace and mercy? If we realize that ‘hard times are upon us’ and that we will have those who are a part of our faith who are struggling in sin, how could responding with the gospel of grace, mercy and repentance be the answer? Have you experienced the gospel’s healing power in the midst of abounding sin? What did this journey look like?
4- Tell about a time when a spiritual hero in your eyes lived it out in real time… when you saw Jesus clearly through their lives? What did that mean to you? What did it mean for your soul? (Do you know that you are a potential ‘hero’ to those who are watching your life and practice?
5- Spend some time in Psalm 15.. Based on this passage, what describes a person who is steeped in truth (rather than swimming in sin)? What steps do you need to take to learn more fully in the truth of His Word and the life given by intimacy with Christ? In pursuing Jesus, you will not be shaken. Psalm 15 says that a life steeped in truth will NEVER be shaken. *Will your teaching explain your life and your life explain your teaching?

Everyone needs a Paul. One who speaks life and leads you toward maturity. Everyone needs a Timothy. One in which you invest life and lead toward maturity.
1- Read & Think…. For the next three weeks, Read one chapter of 2 Timothy each day. Open a journal and Think… Ponder… Meditate. Turn the words over in your mind and heart; consider them from different angles and perspectives. Write down insights, truths, hopes, shifts, changes as you allow the Scripture to form Christ within.
2- When have you been stumped.. baffled… let down? What holds you together in these times? Paul teaches Timothy to ‘hold fast’ to healing words…healing truths….healing hope. How might you hold on to the pattern of life-giving truth? What is your plan to deepen in His Word?
3- How would you express the pattern or outline of the gospel in three sentences? Perhaps, this Scripture (1 Corinthians 15.3-5) and this link (http://lifeonmissionbook.com/conversation-guide) may be of great help. Will you take steps to learn; to grow in; and to teach this pattern?
4- Who has blessed you by speaking life, seeking you out; speaking eternal hope to your soul and being a friend at all times? This week, take the time reach out and to thank them. Who would describe you in that way? How can you be more intentional as an on-going gift of grace and blessing to those that God has placed in your path?
Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who lives in us. - 2 Timothy 1:13-14 (CSB)

Scripture to Remember: 2 Timothy 2.1-13
Everyone needs a Paul, who guides you in the mysteries of God’s grace and goodness. Everyone needs a Timothy, to whom you pass on the mysteries of His grace.1- Read & Think…. Read one chapter of 2 Timothy each day. Open a journal and Think… Ponder… Meditate. Turn the words over in your heart and mind. Consider the abundance of truth in each chapter. Write insights, truth about God, truth about yourself, needed change and hopes as you allow the Scripture to form Christ within.
2- Who is the hero of your story? If you are a follower of Christ, is He the hero of your day to day life? What is happening in your life that can only be explained by His presence? Paul suggests a few ways to assure that Jesus is your source of strength. He tells Timothy to abide in Jesus, day by day dependent upon the enabling grace that flows from a walk with Him. Timothy, be inwardly strengthened by the grace that is in Christ. What are ways that you are inwardly strengthened by Jesus? Would you like to seek more of Him? Consider someone you see living a vibrant faith in Christ and ask them to teach you on why and how they live this way.
3- Paul encourages Timothy to spend no time entangled in concerns of this world. Do you sense that followers of Jesus live more of a ‘peace time’ or luxury faith or ‘war-time’ purposed faith? Will you pray for an urgency for the sake of the gospel? Will you begin that prayer in your own heart and expand that pray throughout our Mandarin family? What are the first 3 things that you need to adjust to disentangle from the concerns of this world? Start NOW!
4- If you are His child, Christ has given you a message of grace. This was given for your salvation and entrusted to you to pass on. What are others hearing from you of this sacred trust of the gospel? Paul tells Timothy, take this message that you have heard and teach it to others? Third, entrust or teach this, so that they may also pass this on to others? You have been given a trust. You have been given a stewardship to pass that trust. God, in His grace, may give you the wonder of watching that trust multiply. What will you do with this grace? Who needs to hear what you have been taught? Will you tell them?
Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. - 2 Timothy 2.2

Scripture to Remember: 2 Timothy 1.8-12
Every one needs a Paul and, everyone needs a Timothy1- Read 2 Timothy this week. Read it through at least three times. Reading invites into His story and to feel at home in God’s economy.
2- How might you ‘remember’ the gospel on a daily basis? What do you learn, from verses 8-12 about faithful endurance in the gospel? Open your journal and list thoughts and truths, then share them with friends and family.
3- Pastor Mark talked about the posture of the church. Followers of Jesus run into the broken parts of this world, as others tend to run away. In Acts 19, Paul is in the midst of a riot and holds the gospel as his hope and his posture is to ‘let me in’. When is a time that you have seen hurt in this world and moved toward ‘let me in’? What is a burden that God has made you aware of today? Are you asking Got to give you a path to ‘let me in’ posture? Why is it of first importance that the gospel of Christ lead the way?
4- Paul is ‘persuaded’ that God is able and that persuasion compels him to make much of Jesus. From 2 Timothy 1, what would you say persuades Paul? What are you persuaded about in your faith and how do those truths shape your daily life?

Every person needs a Paul; Every person needs a Timothy1- Share or post online one truth that sparked life in your soul as we worshipped and then studied 2 Timothy 1.1-2. There is so much that is good in this passage. So much that is remarkable. What is ONE thing that struck you?
2- Paul. Every word matters in Scripture. ‘Paul’ is the one word gospel testimony of God’s rescue, new life, transformation and Paul's life-altering pursuit of the desire to know more of Christ. It’s beautiful to know and to express your one-word life-altering testimony of who Jesus is and what He has done. This is the wonder of the gospel. Try to make this no more than a 90 second story of Christ alive in you. Write of:

* Jesus Restoration (John 3.16; John 10.10; Revelation 21.5; 2 Corinthians 5.17-
19; Ephesians 2.8-10)
* Your Confession (Romans 10.9-10; I John 1.9)
* New Life in Him (Ephesians 1.3-14; Galatians 2.20; Galatians 6.14)
These are beautiful scriptures and life changing joy to think about and write out. It’s worthy. Jesus changes lives and fills us with purpose. Writing your story of life-change is life-giving for you and could be soul-transforming for someone in your path in days ahead. Prepare. Worship. Share.
3- Your Salutation…… a greeting of ‘hello’. Paul’s salutation was a bit more than we offer today. Pastor Mark had fun with this idea of bringing the salutation to life in a culture that barely says ‘hello’ in our texts, emails, DM’s and letters. Paul said ‘hello’ in this way:
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will, for the sake of the promise of life in Christ Jesus: To Timothy, my dearly loved son. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. - 2 Timothy 1.1-2Just for a little joy, write your own ’salutation’, based on who you are in Christ. In the prison prayers of Paul, we discover the blessings that Paul wanted followers of Christ to enjoy. In none of these prayers does Paul request material possessions. His prayers are for spiritual wisdom and the Christ-centered character for those that follow Him. He does not ask God to give them what they do not have, but rather prays that God will reveal to them who they already are in Christ.
1 - In Ephesians 1.17, Paul prays that we receive wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of God…. Our new life as followers of Jesus becomes an adventure of embracing promises more and more as we journey through life. Peter richly connects the comprehensive nature of our possession that we have in Christ and the promises found in the knowledge of God. Read 2 Peter 1.3-4. What do you learn from this scripture? Talk about ways that you might grow in the knowledge of God. Take a first next step by adopting as a spiritual habit some of the ways that you just shared.
2 - In Ephesians 1.18, Paul prays that we will know our position and our possession… Paul has listed our ‘possessions’ in Christ in Ephesians 1.3-14. Make your way through these verses and list what Paul has written about you and your life in Christ. What do you learn about your position in life through the eyes of Jesus? How are you re-thinking your view of yourself; His ways; and His purposes in you? How will this shape your day to day life??
3 - In Ephesians 1.19, Paul prays that we will know the immeasurable greatness of His power…. Essentially, Paul is praying that we will take possession of what we already possess. We have every spiritual blessing in Christ. The word for immeasurable power, from the greek language is ‘dunamis’, which is the same word that was used to describes the power that raised Christ from the dead.. What is an area of your life that invites immeasurable and life-giving hope? Look back at the list from question #2.. What would shift as you walk in the truths of the new life that you have in Christ? What would come alive? What might you let go?
Jesus’ divine power has given you everything that you need for life and godliness in the knowledge of God. - 2 Peter 1
The greatest gift that you can give to this church is to be rightly connected to Jesus Christ, and for the love of God in Christ to be flowing through your life.
Scripture: Philippians 1.4-11
Scripture to Remember: Philippians 1.9-11
For this reason, I kneel before the Father. - Ephesians 3.14
The church of Philippi was forged through prayer and initiated by the supernatural work of God in Christ. The Spirit of God connected hearts, continents, circumstances, spiritual hunger and a heart to know our Rescuing Redeemer. At great cost, God connected Paul as a discipling leader for this church. With great passion, a small group of spiritually hungry stood outside the gates and prayed day in and day out. At even greater cost of imprisonment, worship and miraculous provision of freedom, God grew this amazing Macedonian church. They are a people quite familiar with prevailing power of prayer. So, Paul carries on in prayer as he writes…..
1- Paul prays for abounding love among His people…The words ‘keep on’ presupposes that they are already loving God. Already loving Jesus Christ. Already loving one another. No matter where a faith family may be in their journey, Paul prays for exponential increase in their love. What are the practical implications of this prayer for our Mandarin family? How will we know that we are abounding, more and more, in our love for Christ and for one another?
2 - Paul prays that this love abound in real knowledge and in depth of insight. Talk about very real ways that you may grow in the knowledge of God. What will this growth require of you? Who will grow with you? He also invites us to abound in discernment or depth of insight. This abundance is the capacity to best serve and to love those who make up your faith family. He is praying that you will know best how to love one another. Talk about what this means for you and what impact this desire can have on our Mandarin family? Brainstorm abounding love, care and serving one another for awhile and share ideas.
3- Paul prays that we determine and pursue what is best or superior or excellent. He prays that you are able to set proper values on things, not so much the ability to distinguish good from bad, but good from the best; to focus your time and energy on what really matters. What do you believe that God values most? Explore this thought. Do you value what He values most? In this context of prayer, Paul is praying that we will love one another and love Christ in the BEST ways. How are you loving others best?
4 - Finally, Paul prays that we will be sincere and blameless. That we are authentic. Avoid offense. Intentionally love and serve. Cause no one to stumble. Walk upright ourselves. Our lives can only be judged ‘in the sunlight’ as sincere. We love with abundance because we are loved in abundance by our God. Because this is true, what may be the issue if we are in fractured situations and our love seems to be waning? Talk about this. There is no explanation for us this abounding love except God who is at work within us both to will and to work for His good pleasure and His glory.
The greatest gift that you can give to this church is to be rightly connected to Jesus Christ, and for the love of God in Christ to be flowing through your life.
John 10:1-5
1“Truly I tell you, anyone who doesn’t enter the sheep pen by the gate but climbs in some other way is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought all his own outside, he goes ahead of them.
