"We have this work to do with God around our stories, around our hurt and our pain...Every person is in the pain management business whether they know it or not...If I don't have a relationship and walk with God where I can process that hurt and pain in a healthy way - an appropriate, truthful, redemptive, kingdom way - then I process my pain in unhealthy ways...We learned to use sex as a primary pain management tool of our life...using sex to seek emotional equilibrium."

Dr. Michael Barta's Trauma-Induced Sex Addiction (TINSA) Model of therapy is integrated with healthy spiritual teaching and practices to promote genuine healing from the attachment wounds and intimacy disorders that drive sexual addiction. In part two of our series on domestic abuse, we talk with "Becky", an abuse survivor. Her story is one of pain, fear and redemption, but does point out how the Christian community can sometimes fall into the trap of excusing abusive behavior in the name of avoiding divorce. Can every marriage be saved? Should every marriage be saved? Abuse should never be tolerated in the name of statistics. The guys tackle this tough subject in light of the gospel in compassion, grace and love.

Before you immediately dismiss your need to listen to this episode, we'd challenge you to have an open mind. When we hear the words "domestic abuse", we often think of videos of athletes in elevators, but can we recognize more subtle forms of abuse? Use of Power to Control others through Fear or Intimidation is Abusive even if there are never any bruises or broken bones.
Join us as we begin a two-part series on this important topic. We talk today with Chris Moles (chrismoles.org), a pastor and Biblical counselor who helps churches and families confront the evil of domestic violence.
If this discussion sparked any questions in you, check out Chris's article - Am I Abusive?

Today Nate and Arron sit down with Christine Dente to try to unpack some solutions to engage information with better choices and more wisdom. Check out Christine's website Finding Life in the Bigger Story at https://christinedenteoutofthegrey.com
Some of the proposed ideas to consider were:
2. Consider the purpose: Is it grim entertainment? Grisly voyeurism? Why is it written and why do you want to read it? 3. Consider your filters: are you willing to open your mind, humble yourself, ditch confirmation bias and deal with the cognitive dissonance? 4. Consider your interests: choose a specialty then dive deep. Can you become an expert on one issue? Can you become such an expert without judging others for not having the same interests? 5. Consider the dosage: How many hours are you spending imbibing information and attitudes that can saturate the soul. Is meditating on these ideas helpful or beneficial to your soul? Do they increase your love and compassion, or do they make you afraid and angry? 6. Consider the agenda: Follow the money. What is the underlying ideology? Is it hidden or obvious? Is the bias showing? 7. Consider the alternatives: Podcasts and other long-form, unedited conversations offer a format for engaging issues on a deeper level. Can you hang? 8. Consider the times: be selective with the time of day and amount of intake. Can you control your information exposure in a healthy way? 9. Consider the sensation: Wait 48 hours before believing the worst. Often, the sensational news is refuted within 48 hours. 10. Consider the source: Read the original documents or watch the original video footage instead of someone’s interpretation. 11. Consider the angles: Read and listen to people on all sides of an issue. This gives a balanced perspective and a clearer picture of what’s going on. Is the truth closer to the middle? OUTRAGE PORN

Here too are the lyrics that were discussed on the show from Steve's song, I Want to be a Clone.
I'd gone through so much other stuff that walking down the aisle was tough but now I know it's not enough I want to be a clone I asked the Lord into my heart they said that was the way to start but now you've got to play the part I want to be a clone Be a clone and kiss conviction goodnight cloneliness is next to Godliness, right? I'm grateful that they show the way 'cause I could never know the way to serve him on my own I want to be a clone They told me that I'd fall away unless I followed what they say who needs the Bible anyway? I want to be a clone Their language it was new to me but Christianese got through to me now I can speak it fluently I want to be a clone
Be a clone and kiss conviction goodnight cloneliness is next to Godliness, right? I'm grateful that they show the way 'cause I could never know the way to serve him on my own I want to be a clone Send in the clones Ah, I kind of wanted to tell my friends and people about it, you know What? You're still a babe you have to grow give it twenty years or so 'cause if you want to be one of his got to act like one of us Be a clone and kiss conviction goodnight cloneliness is next to Godliness, right? I'm grateful that they show the way 'cause I could never know the way to serve him on my own I want to be a clone So now I see the whole design my church is an assembly line the parts are there I'm feeling fine I want to be a clone I've learned enough to stay afloat but not so much I rock the boat I'm glad they shoved it down my throat I want to be a clone Everybody must get cloned

Ever heard of codependency? Today Dr. Barbara Stephes shed some new light on the subject as she explores the topic with Nate and Aaron. Also, Aaron apologizes to the city of Tustin. As a more specific aspect of his apology, here are some words from a fellow Pirate Monk on the Subject. And thanks to Josh Manifold for picking some of the tunes the today's broadcast.
"On the Nov 8 edition of the PM podcast, you made some pretty strong statements about the beautiful town of Tustin, CA (as it relates to the planned SoCal Winter 2020 mini-retreat). I quote you from the episode: "Tustin is nowhere" "Tustin is in the middle of ugly LA" "Tustin is not cool" I believe you may have Tustin confused with a more sketchy burg here in the greater LA area. So, as to not scare potential SoCal Pirate Monks away from potentially attending the mini-retreat out here in February 2020, allow me to correct some of your misguided Tustin comments: "Tustin is nowhere" Located just 11 miles up the 55 Freeway from Newport Beach, CA, neighboring the populous cities of Irvine and Costa Mesa, and situated in the heart of Orange County (population 3.1 million), we'd hardly agree that it's a "nowhere" town.... "Tustin is in the middle of ugly LA" It's in Orange County, not in LA. There's a difference. Also see point 1 above, and final point which is: "Tustin is not cool" Besides being 15 mins from Newport Beach, 9 miles from Disneyland, and having countless dining and entertainment options....the city was chosen in 2009 by Forbes as one of the top 25 towns to live well in America. Would you call that "not cool"? I think not. Apologies to the good city and people of Tustin indeed are in order! OK, I apologize! I do love the areas mentioned that surround the beautiful city of Tustin. I repent!

As promised...a bit late, below is the poem Singing Warriors by Paige that was read a couple shows back.
Singing Warriors
By Paige
The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you,
But will rejoice over you with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17
We serve a God who is a Warrior who sings.
And, He enables us to be singing warriors.
Just as he fights for us, he has invited us to join Him in the battle.
And, the enemy is not our husbands.
The enemy is the one who has ensnared our husbands.
The one who has deceived them and blinded them.
The one who is out to steal, kill, and destroy.
The one who uses darkness and hiddenness.
Who tempts and then, when the deed is done,
Heaps on shame so that returning to God (and to us) feels unbearable.
So, we find ourselves here in this place.
In this battle that we didn’t see coming.
That we didn’t sign up for.
That has knocked us to the ground.
And often leaves us as a puddle on the floor.
But, again and again we rise up,
Slowly, hesitantly.
Inch by inch rising to take our place as warriors.
To fight against the enemy.
To fight for truth.
To fight for health.
We fight for our husbands.
And, as we do so, we are fighting for our marriages.
For our children.
For future generations.
But, even if the marriage is not restored.
We choose to pray.
We want to see every Christian man (and woman)
Walk free of sexual brokenness.
Welk free of hiddenness.
Walk free of broken vows.
Walk free of regrets.
God also invites us to sing.
To worship Him even as the all-too-familiar tears
Find their paths down our faces once again.
He invites us to cling to His goodness even in the midst of the storm.
He invites us to join Him in the song He sings over our husbands.
The song of redemption.
The song of forgiveness.
The song of resurrection.
The song that calls out the spark that God put inside our men—
That image of God that is there.
That always has the potential to choose…
Redemption,
Hatred of sin,
Recovery,
Restoration,
Empathy
Coming out of isolation and
Walking in community.
We join this song because of love.
Because even though we have been hurt more than we ever dreamed possible,
We also believe in the man we fell in love with.
We believe that he can be the man He was created to be.
We believe he can walk in honesty.
We believe he can resist temptation.
We believe he can learn to love.
We believe this because he is God’s beloved, too.
We believe this because we know the God of the impossible.
We believe this because we believe in the power of the gospel.
Because we believe in both truth and grace.
However, if the man we love chooses to remain…
Remain in his lies
Remain in the darkness
Remain in his pattern of giving into temptation
Remain in choosing death over life…
We will still know that we have a Singing Warrior
Who delights in us and who saves us.
We know no matter what happens
We are loved by the One who knows us best
By the One who weeps when we weep
And by the One who understands betrayal all too well.

Catherine Etherington is an empathetic and articulate mother-of-two from England who has helped hundreds of women come to terms with the news that they have been sleeping with a sex addict. Here's a taste of her wisdom:
Nate: Some Christian women are told that their responsibility towards a repentant spouse (or even an unrepentant one) is to forgive and forget. Is that true? Is it even possible? Are there healthier alternatives that produce healing?
Cat: That is such an important issue and one that we in the church don’t really talk about enough. This whole forgiveness thing puts women under a lot of pressure in the midst of their trauma and confusion and in my opinion it creates a lot of unnecessary guilt on their part.

Aaron follows up on his promise from the last episode and invites Dr. Paul Corona to discuss treating depression and addiction with medicine.
Have you been struggling for years with addiction, depression symptoms, physical pain, anxiety, or other related issues? For many, there has been no treatment, pill, or treatment plan able to solve the problem. Dr. Corona’s approach is different. He understands there’s only one solution per person, and that solution depends on a number of factors—your genetic makeup, your hormonal status, your body’s chemistry, your upbringing, and even your current lifestyle and stresses. The heart of the episode circles around a recent experience Mark encountered. At a recent meeting, two men discussed their dissatisfaction with their Samson Society journey. Upon further discussion, everyone in the circle agreed that sometimes every Pirate Monk can get stuck early on The Path. We go to (some) meetings, we choose a Silas that we call (rarely), but steps three through seven elude us. How does a willing man face his journey and make progress.

You asked for it. We delivered.
One of the most commonly asked for additions to the podcast line up is: "Can we hear from other Pirate Monks?" Today on the podcast, we sit down with two Samson brothers who have never met Nate.
Paul Maxwell (@paulcmaxwell) is a PhD student at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and philosophy professor at Moody Bible Institute. He writes more at his blog, and pretends to like coffee. Paul wrote the article "Seven Things to Do After Watching Pornography" for Desiring God and included a shout out to Samson Society.
He was first invited to Samson Society by his friend Ryan Gibson. Ryan started his professional life in ministry as a youth minister. He received an undergrad in theology and pursued an MDiv at Westminster Seminary where he met Paul Maxwell. He didn't complete his MDiv, instead pursuing a new career in web development and has been doing that for the past five years. He has done a lot of traveling since then, starting or joining Samson Society groups in each new location. He's currently living in Fishers, Ind. with his wife and two kids. He is currently meeting with other brothers in the local Fishers Samson Society group which meets at Christ's Community Church on the corner of 131st and Allisonville Rd. Most importantly, though, is that he's a diehard Cubs fan and doesn't miss a game.
We'd love to hear from you. Please take a few minutes and answer questions on our listener survey. You'll be entered for a drawing for a free, autographed copy of Nate Larkin's book, Samson and the Pirate Monks.

Our own Renaissance Man, Aaron Porter, takes us on a guided tour of one of his life's great passions—applying the Gospel to the great why questions of our lives. Every week, Aaron coaches several Christ followers on the path to greater understanding of their selves and Abba God using the material in his latest book, Soul Architecture: Building Your Story on a Gospel Foundation. Using the ancient enneagram as a tool and the Scriptures as the roadmap, Aaron helps us understand:
we need more than just a personality inventory that examines behavior which part of the Body of Christ we function in what "planet" we are on—how we process our surroundings and interact with others

Certified marriage & family therapist and author Ramon Presson takes us into the darkest days of his life and helps us all look out the window at God's answer for guilt and shame.
Our Guest
Ramon Presson is a clinically certified marriage and family therapist for over 20 years and the founder of LifeChange Counseling and the Marriage Center of Franklin. From 1989 to 2004 Presson also served as an ordained minister and assistant pastor in churches in North Carolina South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee.
A native of North Carolina, a teenage Ramon first met Dr. Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages, at Chapman's Winston-Salem church. After graduating from Wake Forest University with a degree in psychology and later from Florida State University with a Master’s in Counseling, Presson returned to serve on the staff in the church’s counseling center and there renewed his relationship with Dr. Chapman. Many years later, in 2002, they would collaborate on the Love Talks trilogy of books for couples and families. “I thank Dr. Chapman and I credit the co-authorship of those books for opening many of the subsequent doors of writing and publishing opportunity I’ve enjoyed. I’m quite honored that Gary agreed to write the foreword for When Will My Life Not Suck.”
Ramon lives with his wife, Dorrie, and teenage sons, Trevor and Cameron, in Thompson Station, Tennessee, a pleasant drive into the country south of Nashville.

When Will My Life Not Suck?: Authentic Hope for the Disillusioned
Is this as good as it gets?
Personal crises and disappointments have led many to the pessimistic conclusion that "my life sucks." Underneath the contemporary slang are universal and timeless questions about the human condition. People of every age, in every kind of circumstance have wondered to themselves and others: Will my life ever be better than this? Is this as good as it gets? This book is an honest and compassionate look at the real struggles we face in a broken world where bad things do happen. Dr. Ramon Presson, a licensed marriage & family therapist for 30 years, describes his own significant personal struggles, including hospitalization for depression. Using the letter that Paul wrote to the Philippians from prison, Presson shares that hope and joy are possible even when life disappoints. Full of practical suggestions for how you can live with purpose and meaning right in the middle of your everyday struggles, this revised and updated edition of When Will My Life Not Suck? is a hopeful treatment of human suffering from someone who has personally lived it and counseled others through the wilderness. Nate Larkin's own Silas, worship pastor and author David Hampton, climbs up into the treehouse for episode 171. They guys talk about what happens AFTER the pink cloud of early sobriety disappears. How do you maintain passion for recovery? How do you deal with those around you who either aren't used to the new you or keep expecting you to revert to the old you?
Our Guest
Though the first bullet point on his resume would include almost two decades as a worship director at a prominent Nashville mega church, the greatest impact of David Hampton’s career and narrative isn’t summed up so neatly.
David’s life story is certainly highlighted by his prodigy-like talent at the piano, his awards for songwriting and musicianship, the songs and hymns he has published and recorded, and traveling with a host of well-known music artists. However, David found the theme that emerged as he became more successful was one that he would never have chosen or written into one of his melodies—and one that ultimately would offer life, hope and healing.
The twists of his wife’s suffering with a progressive and eventually debilitating disease and his own subsequent spiral into alcoholism began derailing what, at first, seemed like a storybook life. David recounts his days as a “professional Christian” trying to spin the plates of a very public ministry life and a serious addiction to alcohol with candor.
David’s journey into recovery brought more than just a means by which he learned to live without alcohol. He became keenly aware of his spiritual bankruptcy and all the unaddressed questions of his faith and lack of it. His story includes how he entered recovery, incorporated spiritual guides from ministers to monks, the sensory overload of fresh sobriety, and determining what parts of his old belief system would make it into the renewed version of himself that was emerging.

In Episode 170, Nate, Newton, and Mark welcome Englishman Joshua Jones to the microphone. He discusses how we can build genuine relationships with the opposite sex that DON'T threaten marriage. Is it possible? Is it wise?
The Book
Forbidden Friendships: Retaking the Biblical Gift of Male-Female Friendship
Forbidden Friendships presents the case for why Christian men and women not only can but need to engage one another in deep friendship and how to do so.
In the name of integrity, walls are being raised that keep us from meaningful brother-sister friendship in Christ. While personal boundaries can be healthy, these generalised divisions are not Biblical nor these rules in line with Church History at its best. Contrary to their promises, we are not safer from sexual immorality by adhering to them - we are more at risk.

Do we have your feedback yet? Please take a few minutes and answer just a few questions in our listener survey. On episode 168 of The Pirate Monk Podcast, the guys welcome author, speaking agent, and fellow struggler on the path, Wes Yoder, Our conversation may meander, but we will touch on confession, sorrow, lament, healing, fathers, and Elvis. Show Notes Bond of Brothers by Wes Yoder
Wes Yoder is the founder and President of The Ambassador Agency in Franklin, Tenn. He is also the local representative for The New Canaan Society which has groups across the nation. Click here to find a group meeting near you. Quotes Used Wes referred to The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. In this novel, Lewis paints broad pictures about our entry and existence in heaven. It's worth the read. A third-party summary of the section on heaven is:In The Great Divorce Lewis paints a picture in which the closer we get to God, the more real everything gets. Hell (the farthest place from God) would only be the size of a pebble on earth, earth the size of a pebble in heaven. When souls first arrive in heaven, their appearance is as ghosts. Their forms have been expanded, like blowing up a balloon, so that they match the size of things in heaven, but they are like empty air. A body is outlined but they are transparent and so weightless that they cannot bend the grass beneath their feet (it feels like needles to walk on), nor sink in water, nor pick up a heavenly apple from the ground. Those residents of heaven who come to greet the ghosts have been filled with the fullness of God’s Divine Being. As God is more solid than anything on earth, in Lewis’s vision, so these people are more solid, more real, and now more fully human than any human being in our world.[Order] Michael Card, a mutual friend of Nate Larkin and Wes Yoder (and one of our favorite songwriters), wrote a book and a set of songs on lament. [Book] [Music] Wes made reference to a number of authors and recording artists his career has crossed paths with. If you're curious, check out their work. Ralph Carmichael Dale Evans Rogers Paul Harvey Pat Boone The Imperials Randy Matthews Scripture UsedTherefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. James 5:16 ESV The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Genesis 1:2 ESV, emphasis addedWes commented that the Hebrew word for "Spirit of God" in this verse is in the feminine gender. Quotes Used Nate quote Martin Luther from his writing called "Two Kinds of Righteousness." The full quote is as follows:There are two kinds of Christian righteousness, just as man’s sin is of two kinds. The first is alien righteousness, that is the righteousness of another, instilled from without. This is the righteousness of Christ by which he justifies though faith, as it is written in I Cor. 1:30: “whom God made our wisdom, our righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” In John 11:25-26, Christ himself states: “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me.....shall never die.” Later he adds in John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” This righteousness, then, is given to men in baptism and whenever they are truly repentant. Therefore a man can with confidence boast in Christ and say: “Mine are Christ’s living, doing, and speaking, his suffering and dying, mine as much as if I had lived, done, spoken, suffered, and died as he did.”Scripture UsedTruly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. John 12:24 ESV "You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell."
