Today we begin three months in the book of 1 and 2 Timothy. Paul writes this letter to Timothy as the church at Ephesus is in turmoil only four years after his departure. Paul could have offered a lot of pragmatic recommendations, but instead, he begins his letter by exhorting them to guard the gospel, and to remove anything (and anyone) who distracts from it.

From the beginning God had a plan to give His people a King. A King who would be both a humble servant, and a triumphant conquerer. Our framework for such a one as this is found only in God Himself.

"And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  This is the great and first commandment.  And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.  On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."

Personal, perfect, perpetual obedience.  This is what God requires. And this week we highlight the great gulf between that requirement and what we are apart from Jesus.  However, this gulf is not meant to dismay, but to point us toward what God accomplished in Jesus at Calvary.

Despite all of their prosperity, the city of Laodicea lacked a quality water supply. As a result, they relied on a combination of nearby sources that produced lukewarm water which was known to be repugnant. Christ uses this to help paint a picture of the local church in this community. They were neither providing refreshment for the spiritually thirsty, not healing the spiritually sick. As a result, Jesus threatens to cast them from His mouth.

The church that tolerates false teaching and corrupt morality will receive judgement, but Christ promises that those who hold fast to the Gospel will receive the ultimate reward.

View Details

Churches and individual believers are continually encouraged and even tempted to compromise with the world theologically and ethically. Yet, true believers of Christ will remain faithful to the end and will receive the reward of eternal life from the Lord.

The Church in Ephesus looked healthy on the outside. They had sound doctrine and worked steadfastly for the good of their community. Yet they were no longer motivated by a love for their Savior. Jesus lovingly invites them to return to the place where they first knew that God was head over heels in love with them.

It is the will of the Lord that His children experience suffering. For the believer, this is not the exception...but the rule. However, for those who are His, suffering is a gift. In the midst of trial we are able to better distinguish the temporary from the eternal. The Glorified Christ rightly puts all else in perspective. This was true for John on Patmos, and it's true for us today.

As Christians, we are drawn to service. Yet, service apart from Christ leads us to think more of ourself than we ought. Gospel service flows from communion with Christ. We must sit with Mary before we are ready to work like Martha.
