This week I chat with passionate Loughstyle competition angler, Gregor Fleming. He has 6 international caps to his name and a team member of the Alba Cats. We chat about his local water Harelaw Fishery and the Lake of Menteith and the goals he has for the coming season. He also tells us the tactics which brought Scotland Gold at last year's International at Lough Ennell, plus his top patterns which brings him success on the competition scene.
This week I chat with Welsh Bank Internationals Dai Jones & Matthew Pate. Dai, a brown bowl winner and recently top rod in the Welsh Trails and Matthew, current Manager of the Welsh Team. We chat about the Stillwater International Bank scene and also their local club lake Llyn Fawr. A club I am also a member of and where it all started for me. We chat about the fish farm where the club bring on some fantastic fish for The Llyn. We also talk about fly tying and they both give their top patterns which have brought them success over the years.
On the last day of the season yesterday I shared a boat with David Hoppe at Grafham Water. David has had much success over the years on the competition scene but he also has another passion..... Zander. I have yet to catch one so thought who better to get me into one but David. It wasn’t the ideal conditions to say the least but we braved the elements but unfortunately it wasn’t to be but I took the opportunity to record this chat with him from the boat to discuss his methods and tactics which brings him success and gives a taste to those wanting to give it a try. He also talks of his break from the competition scene, but says he will return again someday.
In this week's episode I chat about buzzers or duck fly as they are more commonly known as in Ireland. Only a few more weeks now before we see the early hatches on our waters, so it's now time to prepare for what some class as the best sport of the season. I talk about the chironomid, its stages from larva, pupa to adult, when to fish for them, the tactics, methods and how to make the most of the hatches to bring success.
This week I chat with Don Mansell, he has fished Wimbleball Lake in Devon since it first opened back in 1980. I love this water and wanted to know more, it is overlooked by many anglers a fantastic water. Not only does Don fish it regularly he also works at the dam. He tells us the importance of the aerators and also his top areas around the lake which has brought him success. We also chat about his other favourite waters, Clatworthy, Clywedog and Rutland.
This week I chatted with Andrej Urosevic. He is known for his cooking ability specialising in fish. Over the last 2 years or so he has hit social media by storm in his goal of cooking every fish in the world. He has over 5 million views and just over half a million followers on Instagram (andrejcooksfish) His hook you can say is entertaining viewers by slapping each fish he cooks! Although he has fished since a young boy he only recently taken up fly-fishing and shares his knowledge and advice on cooking Trout, Perch and Grayling!!!
My first guest of the New Year, 2025 is Welsh International Darren Williams. He has many caps to his name including being captain and recently manager of the Welsh team.
We chatted about Corrib, including his story of when he caught his best brown of just over 10lb plus a salmon both taken on the fly. Plus he tells of his love of the lakes of Mid Wales, Claerwen and Elan Valley.
Following on from last week's episode, which was the first part of the Christmas Special which included the first half of 2024, this week's episode is part 2 , where I take another selection from all my guests from the second half of this year.
What another great year it's been, a milestone for me achieveing 200 episodes and reaching the four year mark.

At only 22 years of age he has a fierce passion for the sport and especially the competition scene. He has 2 youth International Scottish caps to his name and fishes for the Balfron Piscatorials who have done well in both the Airlo and Greys Championships this season.
It was a real pleasure and encouraging to chat with someone with such a love for flyfishing at a young age.
This week's podcast episode is a special one for me. I never thought when I started back in 2020 during lockdown I would one day be celebrating 200 episodes.

On this week's episode I explain and run through my gear which I use to catch my ferox on Corrib. You don’t need high tech fish finders and expensive rods to catch a fish of a lifetime. Time on the water and knowledge is the most important thing you need.

This week's episode I chat with Scott Mackenzie. He is one of the biggest names in fly-fishing. He has had many world record casting achievements, a professional ghillie for over 20 years, caught salmon to over 30lb and has a successful tackle brand which he started back in 2007.
He tells of his journey from when he fished with his dad as a boy in the hill lochs in the Highlands of Scotland and through to the present day and the creation of what many would say the best fly rod on the market, the FX2.

In this week's episode I share a boat with Andy Barton and Colm Murphy on Lough Corrib. We had a great evening when wind and light conditions were perfect and the fish were up and taking. I talk about when all things come together and the flies that did the trick, dark skies and claret flies. Also the pulling power of the Leggy Octopus. Great sport on the Western Lakes is not only to be had in May, when conditions are right August can prove productive.
Before recently retiring Paddy Gargan was a Fishery Biologist for Inland Fisheries Ireland and before that was Manager at the Salmon Weir at Galway. I met him for a chat at his home, overlooking the lower lake on Corrib located just outside Galway City.
We chat about Connemara sea trout, his view on salmon farming and this seasons very good run of salmon coming into the lough.
He also talks of something I have a passion for, Ferox. He tells of their spawning habits and no matter what part of the lake they reside most head for the one river.
A fascinating chat from someone with a wealth of knowledge and love of sea trout and salmon.
This week's episode I am in County Kerry on the first week of my road trip around Ireland. I met up with Currane boatman Neil O'Shea where we had a day afloat on this majestic water. We were in search of Sea Trout and Salmon, unfortunately fishing was tough and only caught a few trout. Fishing with Neil was a great experience as we fished salmon holding marks and fished a method seldom fished today. Holding on marks while fishing the current similar to that of a river. I talk also of the surrounding history of Kerry.
It's true to say that Currane is not the lake it used to be, but great fishing can still be had. It is no secret that the offshore salmon farms has affected the fishing at Currane. Please help get this water get back to it's halcyon days and stop buying toxic farmed salmon.
This week I chat once more with Yorkshire angler, Melvyn Wood. This May he had a fish of a lifetime, a double figure Sheelin brown. He tells us the story and tactics he used to catch this magnificent fish. He has had a great season also catching his PB sea trout on his trip earlier in the year to Argentina but now plans to stay local for the rest of the season fishing his home water, Malham Tarn.
This week I met up with good friend and British Carp on the fly Record Holder Jason Williams at his local water Canada Lake. He has had many carp over the years and countless over 20lb with the best going 39lb. Jason specialises in fishing for them on the fly with no loose feed or freebies. He is in great demand with anglers wanting tuition days and guiding but Jason has no interest. He has always kept his cards to his chest..... until now! For the first time he goes into detail and tells us his secrets to his success, including tackle, methods and flies. If you want to catch carp on the fly this episode is a must listen to. The day we fished we caught 15 fish, many of which were doubles.

Hi guys, this week's podcast I chat with Irish angler Rob Connor. He has a passion for fishing the midland loughs and tells us about Lough Owel, Ennell and Sheelin. We had a brilliant evening together last month on Sheelin where he had three great fish on dries, we were however blessed with having a great boatman that evening, Ted his collie. With all the modern fly patterns around today it is the traditional Grey Wolf which is Rob's first choice during the spent. He talks also of what to expect the next few weeks including the Murrough and Peter fishing.
Recently I joined up with Chris Hague and fished the River Derwent at Chatsworth Estate. We chat about the great fishing we had catching some lovely rainbows up to 6lb. Chris caught many of his fish on a drop shot euro nymphing technique and in our chat explains his set up and method he used to great effect.
He also tells of his involvement with Mackenzie Flyfishing as part of the design team including the new FX2 range of rods. Also talks of his Iceland hosted trips plus his upcoming Speycasting Workshops perfect for anyone wanting instruction from the master himself.

This week's episode I chat with Finian Dodd. He was born on the shores of Lough Arrow at Ballindoon, and still lives there today. He has fished the lough since he was a small boy and today runs a successful boat hire with a fleet of a dozen boats. Not only is Finian an experienced angler he has vast knowledge of the history of Arrow and tells of stories of the families which lived on the islands. Even though the Mayfly has finished he tells of the sedges including the Green Peter and the Murrough which will draw the anglers to the magical water next month.
This week's episode I meet up with Doolin angler, Dave Egan. We met up and recorded our chat after a day on Lough Corrib while parked up at Balinduff Bay. He tells of his day taking 16 fish to the boat while fishing with his boat partner, Gerry. Dave needs no introduction on the Irish competition scene having achieved many titles including National Champion on his first attempt and Brown Bowl winner at the 2018 international on Lough Mask. He tells of his success in recent weeks and says its the best May he has experienced. Catching on buzzers, olives and Mayfly and already looking forward to next month fishing the caenis. He is one of the most passionate anglers I've met and probably has Corrib water running through his veins.

This week's podcast I travelled up to fish the River Derwent at Chatsworth and met up with River Keeper Mat Fletcher. He tells us what goes into running and maintaining this quality, historical water with some great stories to boot. The Mayfly hatch is due in June, later than most rivers, so still plenty of time to book a trip. On my visit I had lovely browns and rainbows up to 6lb. Great Fishing!

Even though it gets most of its publicity nowadays with its huge pike it still is one of the leading trout lakes in the country.

This week I chat with Marina Gibson. She needs no introduction as she is one of the biggest names in our sport. Anyone who knows her will tell you she lives and breathes flyfishing. She is often seen across social media catching many species of exotic fish but it’s fishing for salmon which is her true passion.
Last year she realised one of her pipe dreams and together with her husband Stefan took over the lease of the salmon beat at Bywell on the river Tyne. She talks of her love of Spey casting and along with the positives, the negatives that come with social media.
This week is also an exciting time for her as it’s the launch of her new book Cast, Catch, Release.

This week I chat with Irish angler Anthony McCann. He has a passion for Fly-tying and only started just over 4 years ago. He has such a talent and has a large following across social media. He specialises in salmon flies and more recently classic patterns. A few years ago he had a brain hemorrhage and he tells how fly-fishing and tying helped in his recovery. He recently has set up an online shop selling Raidzap and Largaton products.

Tim opened its doors to the public over 50 years ago and today Lechlade is known as one of the leading big fish waters in the country. He talks of how it all started back in the mid 70s and tells of what goes on behind the scenes and how things have changed, especially the fishing season due to global warming.

Hi Guys, this week I chat with Nick Warren. He has a passion for the large sea trout of the Rio Grande, Argentina. He has fished there for the last 18 years with his biggest to date topping the scales at 28lb. He is from Bristol but travels with his work all over the world as an international DJ and Producer. Some of you will know him from the dance music scene of the 90's when together with Jody Wisternoff formed Way Out West. He talks of how music and fishing play a big part in his life even as a young boy fishing small rivers at his home in Dorset and spending all his spare money on records.

This week’s episode I chat with Yorkshire angler Stephen Smalley. He has fished his local rivers since a young boy, however, it's the stillwaters and reservoirs he prefers to be. He started to flyfish at Stocks Reservoir and nowadays he enjoys nothing better than to be afloat on his local lake, Malham Tarn. Many of you will also know him for flytying and seen him at many of the shows including the BFFI and Irish Fly Fair.
This week’s podcast has gone international as I chat with Robert Thompson from Calgary, Alberta. Originally from South Wales he moved to Canada in the 70's. He is active on social media and he often putting up pictures of some amazing fish he's catching, including, Char, Tigers, Rainbows, Cutthroat trout and pike. We chat about something I’ve always wanted to do and that’s ice fishing, and tells how it’s done including some stories of big pike.
This week’s episode I chat with talented and passionate fly tier Kevin Sheridan. He is a regular face at shows and fly fairs as he is an Irish representative for GAIA and ambassador for Semperfi. Originally from Galway but now lives in Cavan so it’s no surprise he is regular on Lough Sheelin. I met up with her earlier on in the season at Lower Mill, a beautifully manicured stretch of crystal clear water which holds both browns and grayling, to shoot a feature for the Flyfishing Journal. I chat with her this week on the phone to see how her season was plus to find out more about the chalk streams which she has fished for more than 20 years.
This week I chat with Irish angler Darren Duffy from Cork. Even though he lives near the Black Water which has fished it all his life, it's the loughs he prefers to fish. Darren is a talented fly tier and has a feature in this Autumn issue of the Flyfishing Journal, showing his favourite patterns. He talks of the great fish he has had this season on Lough Sheelin and Ree while fishing the spent, plus how fishing the Mayfly nymph is becoming more popular and on its day can be deadly.
After a few recent requests from Patrons, this weeks episode I talk of my top 10 patterns which have brought me success this year and past seasons. Must have flies I couldnt go without, I tell when to fish them, how to fish them and why they are so successful. All variants of known patterns with my own twist. Flies include 4 dries, 3 wets and 3 heavyweight nymphs.
This weeks episode I head up to Elan Valley for the last weekend of the season. High water with flooded banks proved difficult conditions but moving around and a change of tactics produced some nice fish. The ultimate wild fishery and a perfect place to sign off the season. I also tell of the history of how the dams came about with the loss of a community which were moved out to build the dams to supply water to Birmingham. Cofiwch Cwn Elan!

Based in Halifax, West Yorkshire she talks about her local River Calder which is only a short walk from her home and also her love for grayling and a recent trip to Bosnia. This week I meet up with another patron to the channel, Andy Barton. We spend a morning together on the lough and had great success, then recorded this chat at his house beside the lake. This week's guest I chat with Colin Dodd who lives on the shores of Lough Arrow, County Sligo. He recently invited me to join him for the day. He didn’t need to ask twice and as I was over in Ireland I headed up to Sligo last week to join him. He has fished Arrow all his life and so did his father before him and also the family run a boat hire business for visiting anglers. He talks of Arrow's hatches and its rich history and why so many anglers keep coming back to this special lough.

He talks about how the team won and tactics which brought them success. He tells us how the season has been, his retirement from being Manager of the Welsh Bank Team,, C&R and his expectations for the coming months, plus his new addition for anglers wanting to stay over, the bell tent.

I have had numerous requests to get him on my podcast, so this week I joined him at the fishing lodge where, even though he's retired he still visits every day. This week I chat with Lucinda Ewin, and after picking up a fly rod only 6 years ago is now an accomplished salmon fly angler. Although coming from Durham she regularly travels across the border to fish the Tweed and Tay in Scotland. Even though she fishes for trout and grayling also it’s easy to tell just by listening to our chat her passion lies with salmon. She has already caught a couple of spring fish this month and recently has passed her level 2 coaching qualification with the Angling Trust.

This week I headed down to Wimbleball Lake in Exmoor. One of the first reservoirs to open it's doors to anglers this season. I decided to book a boat, but as it happened the fish were all close in on the shore and the bank anglers were having a ball. I talk of how we finally get into fish and the methos which eventually brought us success. It brought home the fact that early season bank fishing will out fish the boats and as usual early spring, trout will be found close in until the hatches and warmer weather comes.

He has now moved back to Wales and is keen to get to fish new waters as well as rivers he fished as a boy. We chat about his recent award with the American Fly fishing Hall of fame, a new personal goal he has of getting into oil painting and his continued passion and work for Fishing for Schools.

This week I travel up to the Midlands once again to chat with English International Craig Barr. He talks about his Fly business, Flash Attack which he has been running for over 20 years. This week I talk of my recent success fishing for ferox on Lough Corrib. I have had great success over the years and spent hundreds of hours catching ferox to over 20lb including the record 25lb 2oz. In this episode I share some of my knowlege and give an insight into catching these incredible specimens. I am also offering patrons the chance of winning a day with me ferox fishing this September.
This week I chat with Gareth Lewis, secretary of Gwent Angling Society. He has the River Usk running through his veins and has a real passion for wild browns. He is known to many for his love of tying and fishing micro flies, notably dries up to size 24 which he has great success on. Even tho he is no longer tying commercially, he still enjoys taking part in angling shows around the country. He also tells us how it all started for him while fishing as a small boy on the upper reaches of the Taff near his home in Merthyr.
This week I had an amazing few days on the Corrib at Portacarron Bay. I talk of my experience, the conditions, tactics and flies used. I caught all my fish on a fly given to me by professional tyer Jimmy Tyrrell, a deadly detached body mayfly. All fish were from 2.5lb to just under 6lb. Enjoy!

He was at the forefront of nymph and buzzer fishing back in the late 70s. He has fished with many great anglers back in the day notably Arthur Cove and Arthur Oglesby. He still fishes Chew and Rutland every season. He chats about seasons and anglers past and his love for the sea trout of South America and the salmon of Alaska.

She talks of her local waters Lough Conn and Lough Cullen in County Mayo. She started her fishing career when she took over Healys Hotel on the shores of Lough Cullen in Pontoon back in 1989. She also goes on to tell of the time she met up with Martin McGuinness when shared his passion of Lough Mask.
