Welcome, to the Get Focused Podcast…Hosted by, Bill K. & Gina Faye Marriage & Family Therapist, LMFT, IDHP
Bill started his journey over 20 years ago, taking on life’s toughest challenges head on. After serving in the military, Bill made it his mission to conquer professional sales, and now he’s helping individuals & companies blow past their obstacles, embrace insight, wisdom & inspiration, and create strength, purpose & motivation in everything you do.
It has been Gina’s experience that an important component of successful therapy is the therapeutic relationship that gets formed. She enjoys working with most people and finds that she is most effective to the extent that a safe and trusting space can be created where her clients are able to communicate whatever they need to without fear of judgement. She has also found that she is not able to be of any help at all, unless her client is invested in their healing process, willing to do the work that's involved, and is not looking for their therapist to tell them what to do.
She particularly enjoys the challenge of working with couples. She makes it a point of treating the couple, not either of the individuals involved. She does not take sides, but rather tries to help each person see and understand the other's perspective.
In this podcast you will experience and learn from people from all different walks of life. The stories and experiences that we have all faced or will face and how to overcome your fears and Get Focused.

In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with our guest, Liz Murdoch, who is an animal communicator with many years of experience.
She helps people all over the world get a deeper understanding of what their pets needs are, and what those pets would like their owners to know.
This covers many areas of pet care, including behaviors, medical issues, and end of life care choices.
Liz tells us what took her down this path, and how she decided to follow her heart in spite of misgivings along the way.
She also had a brief conversation with Gina’s cat which was fun.
On the day we recorded this Liz’s new book also went live on Amazon.

In this episode Bill explores what led Gina to follow the path of training to be a Marriage and Family therapist.
In this conversation, it became clear that not everyone knows from a young age what their purpose is, nor does everyone find that purpose.
In Gina's case, it was a long and convoluted path, as it can be for many of us.

This week we decided to address a topic which many of us tend to shy away from, or ignore. One of our listeners requested that we discuss death, how we deal (or don't deal) with it in our culture, and the reasons for this tendency to pretend that death isn't an inevitable part of life.
We looked at how many other words we have for death...someone "passed", "kicked the bucket", "bought the farm" to name just a few.

Hello, all!
In this episode we look at the concept of "Acceptance".
Gina had shared a post about acceptance on Facebook, and we thought it would be interesting to look at what this idea means to each of us, and the fact that the meaning of the word can be misunderstood.
Bill shared that he had, in the past, associated acceptance with complacency, and we clarified for both of us what the difference between these two ideas is.
Typically, our conversation went down several other roads, and we hope you are enjoying our meanderings, as much as we enjoy recording them.
Your feedback is very much appreciated, let us hear from you!

In this session, we dive into the question of gun control, and the wider issue of what we, as a society can do to make a difference.
We both have different perspectives on this topic, although there are areas where we agree, and this made for a fascinating discussion.
As the topic broadened, we looked at politics in general, and the value of voting...how can we really make a difference, and can we be confident that our vote actually counts?
Our conversation illustrates clearly that people who hold strong views are still able to have an open discussion, and still stay friends.

Okay....so what we need to do to "make it happen". (whatever that means) is to hustle...more and more and more...out hustling everyone else.
Is this true?
In this episode, we look at that belief, and question its validity.
Gina and Bill look at their personal ideas about the work ethic, and how they find a balance between working hard and working smart.
Again, Bill looks at his internal narrative which informs him that he is not good enough, and how that narrative impacts how he often strives for perfection.

In this week's episode, we get to talk with Robert Gallagher, founder of Neo-Life Wellness...Escape the Medical Matrix. They offer products and services which provide options to the highly regulated and funded traditional medical choices. We strive to bring thought provoking topics to our listeners, and this episode was no exception. We talked for well over an hour about the huge range of alternatives that exist for wellness, and were reminded how valuable it is to ask questions about healthcare. Bill was amazed to learn just how much research has been done into many of these alternatives by some of the worlds greatest minds, who actually followed these methods themselves. Rob Gallagher has always been a free thinker, but found a love for holistic health in 2014 after healing himself of a knee injury without the help of the medical system. Since then he has spent countless hours researching biochemistry, epigenetics, nutrition, detox, CBD oil, water filtration and now metaphysical study including quantum resonance as discovered by Nikola Tesla over a century ago. He's using his NEO-LIFE Wellness platform to educate people about how the body works, blogging about his own story, and promoting some amazing new products to help fund the expansion of NEO-LIFE Wellness to impact more people. www.neolife.blog www.aegea.com/neolife www.facebook.com/groups/neowell Thank you all for all the support and please if you want more CLICK HERE
In this episode, we look at some of the ideas people may have about what is involved in seeing a therapist, and many of the stereotypes and misconceptions that exist regarding this. We talked about this from the perspective of the client (Bill) and the therapist(Gina). Many of these stereotypes aren't true, and in fact, the most critical thing about getting the results needed from a therapeutic relationship is open communication. Ideally, a therapist approaches every session with an open mind, and curiosity, which helps to build trust and safety on the part of the client. We hope that this interesting and informative discussion might be useful for anyone unsure of connecting with a therapist. Want more, Click Here!
In this episode, we discuss the difference between reality and perception. Bill uses the example of his triathlon training, and how this is being perceived by many of the people around him. We end up exploring how we can gain more self awareness by developing our ability to pay attention...both to ourselves, and what we perceive reality to be. As always, we are always excited to hear your thoughts and get feedback on our podcasts!

This week we talked about this quote that Gina shared, and what it means to us.
“I don’t think there’s any way around it. If we say healing, wholeness, healthy power, true freedom, then we’ve got to, at some point, consciously engage the young ones who continue, in various states of incompleteness, to live on inside of us…..” ‑Josh Levin
Bill wanted to explore the different aspects of our inner child, and how events of our developmental years impact us into adulthood.
This is a very rich topic that no doubt will fuel many conversations to come.
Stay tuned!

In this episode of Get Focused, we had a special guest and a controversial conversation. We decided it would be interesting to have a look at so-called conspiracy theories and the ways they might affect our thoughts and choices. Bill and I have always said that we want to offer thought provoking topics on our podcast, and this episode certainly provides that! We look at what the word conspiracy means to us, and having done that, we look at 9-11, immunization, aliens, and more. So, buckle up, enjoy the ride, and be sure to weigh in with your thoughts and opinions!
In this episode we talked about a couple of interesting subjects. The first, how to best support our kids when they are dealing with inevitable stress in their lives...and the second, on Bill's fear of failure. This is a pretty common fear many of us grapple with, and Bill put himself on the line and started to have a deeper look at his childhood, and the possible roots of this fear. It was especially interesting because Bill, like many others, struggles with recalling many memories of growing up. Gina's experience with guiding people through this process is that often painful experiences from childhood can be forgotten. This is what's called a defense mechanism. And the work of therapy is to recall those painful buried experiences, and process them, so that they no longer run us, but we are in charge of them. As always, we welcome feedback, and appreciate your listening! Want to learn more? Click Here: Getfocusedwithbillk.com
More and more science is recognizing the connection between mind and body.
In this episode we talk about a quote from Gabor Mate, MD, where he points out how these two aspects of us are closely linked.
Feelings release hormones in our bodies, and neuroreceptors develop to receive those hormones. When any feeling is experienced over a long stretch of time, such as stress, neuroreceptors increase to process the related hormones...and their presence can cause us to create situations that release the hormones those receptors are used to.
Hence, we can become addicted biologically to situations that cause the release of those hormones.
The good news is, over time, and with practice, we can chose different reactions, and support the development of other receptors that are there to receive calming hormones such as endorphins.
Thanks for listening and be sure to let us know what you think!
Most of us face the issue of being bombarded with information and stories on the media, and trying to decide what is accurate, and what is not.
In this episode, we agree on the value of keeping an open mind, and not jumping to hasty conclusions before we determine , to the best of our ability, what the facts are. We looked at censorship, and briefly talked about the rights and wrongs of that practice. Given that we all have the responsibility for our own thoughts, it seems to make sense to educate ourselves and those around us to the best of our ability, always remembering that no two people will have the same thoughts, beliefs and/or values. What do you think? Do we leave it up to our government or other news sources to decide what information we receive? We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on this topic! And as always, many thanks for listening!
This week we talked about the challenges of living pay check to paycheck, specifically the mental challenges this can present. We recognize that many of us try to live beyond our means, and explored the cultural beliefs that lead us to prioritizing material possessions. At the same time, we agreed that some people simply are not earning enough to cover the basic expenses of living and providing for our families needs. Ultimately, we came to the conclusion that there just isn't one answer to this issue, and that we all confront a number of challenges around this. We recalled that there are tools that help us deal with the things we can control, and remembered the value of not getting drawn into Monkey Mind chatter, but instead letting ourselves take chances in our lives, and not being discouraged before we even start. Thank you all...see you next week!
| In this episode we discuss a topic that Bill has been thinking about. Can we exercise and develop our mental health the same way that we exercise our bodies? Wow, what a great question! We look at how we react to particular situations and thoughts , and how focused attention to those reactions allows us to respond differently than we are used to. We then explore the idea of "Flow State", looking at what this means in general, and to each of us as individuals. Bill finds his flow state through physical training while Gina practices yoga and meditation. Self awareness is very helpful if we are hoping to find our own individual flow state, and there is no one right way, each of us has to figure out what that means for us. Gina mentioned a book called "Be Here Now" , by Ram Dass, in which the author describes many different ways to possibly achieve this state of focus. It's a book well worth reading. |
In this episode, Bill looks at his sense that some of the people he cares about are not always being honest with him. He acknowledges that this has been an ongoing issue with him, and something that he works at being aware of all the time. We looked at some of his own motives for not always telling the truth, to see if he could better understand the motives of others. It does seem to be true, that the things we become aware of in ourselves we do start to see more clearly in others. Thanks, as always for your wonderful support...remember you are our reason for doing this podcast, and we would love to hear from you!
More than 6 months ago when we started this podcast journey, it was our intention to discuss everyday life's challenges and joys with everyday people. We never follow a script, we simply chose a subject and then let the conversation flow. Our reason for choosing this approach was to provide our listeners with an open and honest experience, one that people could relate to. In this episode, we talk with one of our most dedicated listeners and learned how she found us. She also describes how listening and interacting with us has made a profound difference in her life. We reflected with Linda about how although many people might feel alone at times, the internet allows us to connect with people all over the world, and feel more connected. Doing this podcast has allowed us to learn from both the people we have interviewed, and also the many listeners who have been in touch with us. We thank you, Linda, and all our listeners, for your continued support. You can connect with Linda on Linkedin

In this episode we discuss an article called 5 Signs you are neglecting Your Inner Child. Gina describes what is meant when people talk about our inner child and the value that can be found in paying attention to this often neglected part of ourselves.
Bill explores his own relationship to his inner child, and his childhood, and even those of his own parents. All of us deal with different thoughts and feelings, and can, at times, feel confused and overwhelmed by these. Our hope is that through this, and all of our episodes, we can help minimize confusion, and support greater understanding of ourselves and others. Thank you, as always, for all your enthusiastic feedback and love!
Right before we began recording this week, we considered what we wanted to talk about. Characteristically, once we got rolling, we took a left turn, and ended up discussing The Vagina Monologues! If you're curious about how that happened, you'll just have to listen to find out. The rest of the time was spent with Bill doing therapy with Gina...or so he says. Gina and Bill both have their own thoughts and opinions, and love challenging and sparring with each other. It's yet again a fun and interesting episode, so we hope you enjoy it, and as always, welcome your input.
In our first episode of 2019 we talk about how important it can be to look back at where we started, and how far we have come. Bill describes his recent family trip to Savannah GA to illustrate how far we have come as a society. We also touch on some different topics which we will take a closer look at in upcoming episodes. Overall. It was great to be back. We are excited at the prospect of a full year of looking closer at ourselves and sharing that, and other interesting guests with all you !
This week, we had some fun discussing "Love it Forward " by Jeff Brown.
We flipped through the pages, stopped at a random quote, and shared our thoughts about the quote. In particular, the idea of Karma grabbed our interest, and we spent some time exploring that concept.
Gina and Bill also dove into the idea of self worth, and particularly Bill's personal take on that.
This was another episode filled with fascinating information and illustrates once again that Gina and Bill hold nothing back when sharing their feelings and life experiences. So please listen comment and share. We want to hear your story and the story of every person you know!

This week, our guest was Tia, who describes herself as a Licensed Acupuncturist and Certified Yoga Instructor. In our conversation, we discovered that there is way more to this young woman than those titles alone reveal. She has had quite an amazing and challenging journey, one which some might describe as full of horrifying situations. Tia has chosen instead to understand that everything happens for us, rather than to us, and had decided to learn and grow from all she has been through, in order to better help others do the same. She has shared her process on this weeks podcast, and our hope if that you, our listeners, will be inspired to take a similar perspective on the trials that come our way in life. Please listen, comment and share, share, share. We would love to hear your own story, and they stories of everyone you know. The world is full of unsung heroes.

This week, we had our special guest and friend, JF Benoist. He is the author of Addicted to the Monkey Mind: Change the Programming That Sabotages Your Life. This was an enlightening conversation about how the stories we tell ourselves can really influence outcomes. To illustrate this, JF shared some of his own experiences, and Bill used the example of some issues that his 14 year old son is dealing with. JF offered some great ideas about how Bill could be most supportive to his son.
JF is truly an amazing, and informative guest. We strongly recommend reading his easy to follow book. You can contact him and also purchase his book through the links listed below.

We ended up chatting about fear, setting goals, and what things can interfere with achieving those goals. We also looked at if setting goals can actually create limitations. Well, the holidays are fast approaching for many of us, so we decided to chat about the stress that often comes along with these times. To mention but a few sources of potential stress, travel and party plans and decisions, food, and buying or not buying gifts, for who, and the debt we can so easily get into that often plagues us into the new year. Of course, then there's the issue of simply greeting each other during these days. Can we say, Merry Christmas? Or should we say Happy Holidays? Argh!!! So, here's to political correctness, or not...have a listen, and let us know your thoughts, and challenges around the holidays! In this episode, we explore a topic that was suggested by one of our listeners...basically how to keep yourself motivated when things are not looking all that great.
I have to admit, GinaFaye encourages me to dig deep in order to figure out just what it is I do to keep motivated.
For me, one of the best things about doing this show is the opportunity to keep growing and learning about myself, and sharing that with all of you.
Gina always surprises me with her ability to guide me more and more deeply into myself, and help me connect with my real and truest parts.

In this episode I finally introduce you to Gina. She is a very dear friend and is also a marriage and family therapist. We met over five years ago when she was still living in San Diego. As you will find out she challenges me to be the best version of me by pointing out what I already know inside. I feel that this approach works great for me because if you were to say to me do this or do that because it will make you better I would not see the value in that. Well I can go on and on about how much I have learned and still learning but you need to stop reading and start listening.
