For more than thirty years, Lynae McFarland carried a secret she believed would define her forever. Burdened by shame after two abortions, she spent decades trying to outrun her past, until God began gently calling her home. In this deeply moving conversation, Lynae shares how a simple word for the year, an unexpected business card, and the compassionate welcome of a pregnancy help clinic became the beginning of complete transformation. Today, the woman who once hid in silence now helps others find freedom, healing, and hope through Christ. This is a powerful testimony that no one is beyond God’s mercy and that our greatest wounds can become our greatest ministry.

Danielle White interviews Jeremy Dys from First Liberty Institute about a recent legal victory involving a Miami pregnancy center that was vandalized following the Dobbs decision. While we have historically seen the FACE Act weaponized against the pro-life community, this crucial win in favor of pro-life organizations has shown that those who commit vandalism can be held accountable. Listen in as Danielle and Jeremy break down the details on this case, and discuss what may or may not change if the FACE Act were to be repealed.

How often do we miss those moments where Jesus is trying to speak to us? In this episode, Kirk Walden tells a story of missing out on what (or who) is right in front of us, relating it to how often we miss the times that the Lord is trying to show us something. If we start asking “where” we see Jesus each day instead of “if”, our perspective can shift, relieving anxiety, preventing burnout, and building confidence.

In Part 2, Carole Novielli and Jor-El Godsey expose the dark agenda behind the more recent push for chemical abortion on vulnerable young women, forcing them to play doctor, nurse and pathologist as they take the abortion pills alone at home with little to no medical oversight. Despite the risks of these pills, many major medical organizations support easy access to abortion, and complications related to chemical abortion are often overlooked or go unreported. The complicit media clearly has a bias towards abortion, even citing statistics out of context as they seek to blame pro-life laws for women who are harmed during an abortion.

Lisa Bourne provides updates on legal cases involving Abortion Pill Reversal in states like New York, where a federal judge recently issued a preliminary injunction blocking Attorney General Leticia James from preventing pregnancy centers from offering APR to clients. Chemical abortion makes up the majority of abortions in the U.S., with several states now battling to keep their right to offer and speak about the protocol.

Recognizing the risks of chemical abortion and the dangers of abortion pills by mail, Louisiana law now requires the classification of abortion drugs as controlled substances.

The Abortion Pill Reversal Network continues to grow, now offering the opportunity for pharmacists to join. Visit APRNWorldwide.com for more.

Lastly, Lisa shares recent article highlights on the effects of abortion on men, and the importance of the involvement of men in pro-life work.

Valerie Harkins is joined by Faith Cintron from Aid for Women (Chicago, IL) to discuss how to best serve undocumented women in the maternity home setting. Faith draws from her experience to answer Valerie’s “frequently asked questions” surrounding this topic.

Sponsored by: Heart & Home E-Newsletter

Notes:

  • Undocumented residents may come from all over the world. Maternity home staff should be prepared to be understanding of different cultures and traditions.
  • It’s helpful to familiarize yourself with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) processes and build a strong relationship with agents so that residents can obtain the correct paperwork as asylum seekers.
  • Connect with area churches that serve the same culture as your resident to help them feel more comfortable.
  • Government assistance may not be available to undocumented women; check your state laws.
  • Maternity homes can help women stay on top of court appointments and paperwork so that they can legally stay in your home.
  • Ask lots of questions! Be ready and willing to learn.

Notes:

  • A woman facing an unplanned pregnancy may feel hesitant to connect with a church for fear of judgement.
  • Pregnancy centers can approach churches with something to offer rather than just asking for help financially, volunteers, etc.
  • Churches and centers can co-host events to serve women.
  • Pregnancy centers have a unique opportunity to invite women to local churches for continuing support and spiritual growth.
  • Making that initial connection with pastors could be as simple as bringing in lunch for a presentation to church staff or a short cookie reception to introduce the center and what you do.

Monica Snyder, Executive Director of Secular Pro-Life joins Jor-El Godsey to explain what the Turnaway Study is, and what the findings actually reveal. This study gathered data on women who sought an abortion but were denied, and how these women felt about abortion over time.

Resources:

Read “The Overlooked Findings of The Turnaway Study”

Notes:

  • Abortion advocates have been using this study to promote abortion as a better option for women (citing questions asked about finances, bonding with baby, etc), but their claims are not fully supported by the data in the study.
  • The Turnaway Study revealed that 96% of women who were denied an abortion and later gave birth later said that they no longer wished they had sought abortion. The overwhelming majority of women bonded to their children just fine.

Notes:

  • The results of the “hookup culture” have different affects on men vs women, and both are damaging to the way that bonding happens.

Beth Diemert and Brad Imler discuss what the Bible has to say about adoption, and how we can use that truth to change the conversation surrounding adoption in our culture. Resources:

  • Click here for Heartbeat’s training and resources on adoption
  • Click here to register for the Adoption In Depth Day Training

Notes:

  • Adoption dates back to the Old Testament. God chose adoption as the means to rescue Moses.
  • For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will. Ephesians 1:4-5
  • We all approach adoption with some sort of bias, and it’s important to recognize what your bias is.
  • Adoption needs to be talked about often in the work of the pregnancy help organization, as well as in staff training settings.
  • The post-Roe world has changed the adoption conversation
  • Having a conversation about adoption with a client can empower her to look into all of her options instead of focusing only on parenting or abortion. It opens up new opportunities for her.

Notes:

  • Statistics show that there are likely people within most congregations (or even the pastors themselves) who have abortion in their background.
  • It’s essential to continually bring up life issues in churches; it’s not a one-time teaching.
  • Not speaking out on the pain of abortion leaves a void for those in churches that are still asking questions and may be vulnerable to make an abortion choice, or to encourage someone else to have an abortion.
  • Churches have the opportunity to speak the truth of God’s mercy and redemption to those who have abortion in their past and to direct them to PHOs or church groups that can offer healing programs.
  • If abortion is not rejected by society, we see other life issues such as euthanasia and assisted suicide accepted.
  • Syllogism – It is wrong to intentionally kill an innocent human being. Abortion intentionally kills an innocent human being. Therefore, abortion is wrong.
  • Approach your pastor with a “giving” mindset, not an “asking” mindset. Bring your subject matter expertise to them. Offer to speak and take the burden of doing the research and planning talks from them. Be willing to speak anywhere at anytime.
  • Thank the pastors and churches of your volunteers for their part in supporting a culture of life.

Notes:

  • Abortion pills are sold online with little to no medical intervention or assessment, leaving women in the dark about their options and their pregnancies
  • An ultrasound is essential in dating the pregnancy and in checking for ectopic pregnancy, which would be a life-threatening situation for the mother.
  • Pregnancy help clinics empower women with information and details about their pregnancy and what choices are available to them

Pregnancy center marketing has been under attack for decades, but recent legislation in some states has made more aggressive advances towards silencing the voices of those who want to provide women with alternatives to abortion. Jor-El Godsey, Tracie Shellhouse, Andrea Trudden, and Danielle White discuss how these laws are deceptive and attempt to tell a false narrative of the work of pro-life pregnancy help.

Notes:

  • The First Amendment protects the speech of pregnancy help organizations. Historically, the courts have struck down legislation based on First Amendment prudence (laws were too vague, viewpoint discrimination, content discrimination, etc.)
  • This legislation is intended to cause confusion and fear so that pregnancy centers are scared into silence.
  • Training your staff on answering questions regarding your services is essential to providing quality care for your clients.
  • Be aware of the standards that social media advertising have that might limit how you advertise; these standards continue to change over time.
  • Disclaimers on your website can be helpful, but are not a legal requirement.
  • Be consistent in your messaging. Women need to know that pregnancy help exists. There’s nothing wrong with truthfully promoting your services!

David Mahan from Center for Christian Virtue joins Heartbeat team members Andrea Trudden, Jessica Warner, and Lora Current to discuss the national ramifications of the recent election in Ohio that resulted in the enshrinement of abortion into the state constitution.

Visit www.heartbeatservices.org/gotv for “Get Out the Vote” resources

Sponsor: Option Line
OptionLine.org info@optionline.org

Notes:

  • Amendments that states like MI and OH went up against are confusing and broadly worded; this caused much division among voters
  • Voters responded strongly to the concern over parental rights (even over abortion rights)
  • Abortion is just one piece of the “reproductive decisions” wording that is used
  • The abortion lobby falsely claimed that without this amendment, women could not get care for a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy
  • Pro-life efforts were outspent by roughly 20 million dollars in media advertising by the abortion lobby in Ohio this election season
  • Church engagement is vital. Ohio saw an increase in churches speaking out against Issue 1, but we still needed more.
  • Some people assumed that Ohio is a “life state” and an abortion amendment could never pass. There weren’t enough people willing to get out and vote, or who didn’t realize the severity of Issue 1.
  • Nine additional states could have a similar amendment on the ballot next year
  • In Ohio, existing pro-life regulations will be challenged in the courts. It will be difficult to uphold anything on parental rights, abortion limits, etc. when put up against the new amendment
  • Pregnancy Help Organizations are vital now more than ever in states like Ohio to be there for women as abortion is pushed on them even more than before

Valerie Harkins interviews Gina Tomes about how the 24/7 care model of maternity homes can take a toll on staff and volunteers. Through years of experience (including founding the maternity home, Bethlehem House), Gina has learned a few key things to watch out for and how to prevent burnout among staff.

Contact housing@heartbeatinternational.org to connect with Valerie Harkins, Heartbeat International Housing Specialist

Notes:

  • High staff turnover is often attributed to burnout or exhaustion, especially in ministry work.
  • Staff should be trained well so that they are equipped to handle the many needs of residents.
  • Cross-training staff can help each staff member to take time off regularly.
  • Find a housing model that works well for both residents and staff.
  • Retreats and conference get your team outside of their typical day-to-day work and allows for time of fellowship and sharing of ideas.

It’s banquet season, so we have brought in Kirk Walden and David Bereit to talk with Jor-El Godsey about some of their tips and tricks to holding a successful fundraising event. From fires, falling onstage, and protesters to powerful client moments and overwhelming financial support, Kirk and David have experienced a lot in their travels!

  • Click here for Heartbeat’s manual, Banquet Planning from Scratch
  • Click here for David’s training, The Art of the Ask

Notes:

  • Don’t assume that attendees know everything about your mission and who you serve.
  • Illustrate your mission by telling stories of the families who have been served by your organization
  • Don’t apologize for asking for money. Remember that you are giving people a chance to be a part of your amazing mission!
  • Speak the language of your audience (using terms and explanations that the audience can connect with).
  • Be flexible as unforeseen events may disrupt your banquet; be sensitive to what the distraction may be and remember that your audience is with you. They understand!
  • Remember those who wanted to make it to the banquet but were not able to, or those who were not ready to give that night. Maximize what happens after the banquet by connecting with people who want to give later.

Nafisa Kennedy, Director of Option Line, interviews Dr. Tara Sander Lee and Chaney Mullins Gooley about the resources that are available to parents who have received news of a prenatal diagnosis. Using the new website, PrenatalDiagnosis.org, families can access informative resources as well as chat with a consultant about their options. This website and the resources listed equip pregnancy help organizations, churches, and individuals with the tools they need to be ready to serve a family facing a prenatal diagnosis.Visit PrenatalDiagnosis.orgPrenatal Diagnosis Part 1 – Informed ConsentNotes:

  • A prenatal diagnosis can mean that parents who would not otherwise consider abortion may now be abortion vulnerable; often the pregnancy was planned and the family was excited to welcome a new member to their family.
  • Advances in diagnostic tools have allowed for more birth defects or fetal anomalies to be detected before birth. While this can be a helpful way for an unborn child to be treated before birth for medical conditions, false positive test results or a lack of understanding of the results can lead to the pressure to abort.
  • Perinatal bereavement care is available to parents, and is often chosen instead of abortion when given as option. This can be a very healing experience for the whole family.
  • Parent Care Coordinators help parents through the different services that the family might need including communications with the hospital, surgeons, arranging childcare for other children, travel, etc.
  • Adoptive parents are ready to care for children with medical conditions; this is an option that is not often presented to parents who may not be ready or able to care for a child who is diagnosed before birth with a medical condition.
  • PrenatalDiagnosis.org offers a comprehensive list of resources up to delivery and beyond. Topics include diagnosis, effects on the family, support groups, pregnancy loss healing, and site visitors can connect to a live chat so that help is available 24/7.
