Download this episode Imagine the fishing world without planer boards? For those of us who troll on a regular basis, it's almost impossible. But as with every great and useful piece of equipment, someone had to conceive of the idea, then build it...then build it again and again until they finally reach an iteration that does what they intended. For planer boards, that guy was Gary Gehrman. Like most anglers, Gary got hooked on fishing early in life, but he was never content with the status quo. When he figured out how to catch suspended fish in the middle of what seemed to be an angler's no-man's-land, people began taking notice. Listen to the entire story on this month's podcast and we think you'll end up with a deeper appreciation for the online planer board and the man that caused that wake almost 40 years ago. Download this episode Dick 'the Griz' Grzywinski in his own words We love characters on this show, and the man we meet today fits the bill in ALL CAPS. They call him the Griz and he’s famous for catching more fish on a day in and day out basis than maybe anybody ever has. He performs these fish-catching feats in urban areas and wilderness waters and guides on lakes he’s never seen… and there’s only one guy like him that we’ve ever come across. This story begins in the May, 2018 issue of MidWest Outdoors. The conversation takes place in Griz’s basement, seated on creaky chairs that create ambiance that just seems to fit. As we leave the printed page and pick up the trail here, this grizzled legend of the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame and national Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame tells us what it was like to live through what we now call the modern fishing revolution, and how his approach to the sport was shaped by those years. It’s all stored up there in his head and it was fun to get him talking about it, and we’re excited to present the Griz, in his own words. Subscribe on iTunes! Listen on iHeart Radio! Download this episode When it comes to preserving America’s hunting tradition and the right for individuals to own firearms, nothing is guaranteed. Forces opposing these freedoms are marshaled like never before, and it is, indeed, a culture war, says our guest, Ted Nugent. Sitting silently on the sidelines, he argues, will earn a thank-you note from the antis. After filling up two pages in the October, 2017 issue of MidWest Outdoors magazine, we pick up the conversation as it turns to the health benefits of eating wild game, then sprints from one transition to the next. Never a dull moment when Uncle Ted sharpens the culture-war spear, so if you don’t like controversy, better cover your ears… because it’s fixin’ to get real loud in here, as we hear from Ted Nugent, in his own words. Gary Klein Bass Pro: MWO Interview Gary in his own words In the early days of modern bass fishing, Californians authored their own take on what it takes to catch fish. Klein was a 15-year-old kid gassing up boats at Bidwell Canyon Marina on Lake Oroville when his summer was interrupted by a bass tournament. He hung around the event, won by Dee Thomas, the father of flipping. A mentorship ensued that grew into a bond that endures. By asking for help from Thomas and other accomplished fishermen, a self-assured teenager carved his own take on bass fishing, and, ultimately, what it takes to make a career in the sport. Gary Klein fisherman is a name is safely etched in the history of competitive bassin', and the story is worth hearing... in his own words. It's time well spent...
