Sunday 21st April 2024 was the culmination of a three day conference with Jack Little, one of the founding fathers of the Vineyard movement under John Wimber.

This is a complicated chapter with some killer lines!

Moral of the story being to pick your friends wisely. There’s a sense in this of ‘show me your friends and I’ll show you your future’.

The bible teaches us that we have a responsibility towards one another (Colossians 1:28 NIV He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.), so how do we become aware of each others strengths and weaknesses and step into proactively supporting one another? It’s not about telling each other what we want to hear (as the 400 prophets in this story were prone to do), but instead about drawing one another closer to God in order that we can each choose to hear Him AND then obey what He is saying…

King Ahab has previous experience of God giving him everything he needs when He assured him of victory in 1 Kings 20, saying ‘I will deliver this vast army into your hands and you will know that I am the Lord.’ So Ahab should have had a real sense of confidence…but he wants something more. Why?

Do we ever chase after things that aren’t necessarily what God has in mind for us to be able fulfil His purposes in our lives. Do we trust God – resting what He has said? Or do we chase after more.., whether it’s money, status, possessions and so on.

It’s not wrong to express our desires… but as the apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:12-13 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. [13] I can do all this through him who gives me strength…

Elijah was a bit ‘out there’ – bold, audacious, cheeky, extremely confident…! And yet, following the amazing bold, confident moves described in the previous chapter, in this chapter we see a different side to him. He’s afraid and runs for his life.

How did it come to this? Elijah isn’t immune to the ‘fiery darts of the enemy’, so – what can we learn from this story? How do we know when we should move onto something new? How do we avoid falling into the trap of believing the voice of fear, shame or disbelief?

God wants to see things coming to a place of completion…but how?

Zechariah 4: 6-10…‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit says the Lord’

1) We need to bring a spiritual challenge to the ‘mountain’ that’s before us
2) See the emergence of level ground
3) Look at what the foundations were that we’ve built on, and make sure that the capstone fits them

The situation in Israel is dire, yet God doesn’t strike the nation down – instead He sends Elijah the prophet to show the way. It’s a reoccurring theme throughout the Bible. We mess up and He wades in. He never leaves or forsakes us. His commitment right from the very beginning was to be with mankind, and involve us in His purposes.

We live in uncertain times in the world right now. But He send each of us who have yielded our lives to Him, packed full of His Holy Spirit, to bring light in the darkness – just as He sent Elijah the prophet.

Meditations on Psalm 118

In the Jewish tradition, Psalm 118 is used at Passover. Jesus would have been meditating on it on the day he was betrayed. It’s a psalm that describes getting through a time that isn’t so good, to a time that’s better…

Colossians 1:29 reminds us to strenuously contend with every ounce of energy that we have… but what are we contending for? Love for God is the commandment that drives us, leading to us to love one other. In times of pressure we do need to strenuously contend for this to be our focus – God wants us to have an intimate relationship with Him. That’s what took Jesus through Good Friday to Easter Sunday, and is what we can experience in times of trouble too.

Jeroboam leads the 10 tribes in the North, under the banner of Israel, while Rehoboam leads the two tribes in the South, under the banner of Judah.

The chapter is also split – between what is happening in the north, followed by what is happening in the south.

In the north, a couple of chapters previously the prophet Ahijah has previously warned Jeroboam, but Jeroboam doesn’t heed the warning and decides to do his own thing. But in chapter 14, his son becomes ill, and suddenly he wants to hear from the prophet again. However, instead of going himself, he sends his wife.

  • Why? He takes the cowards way out – how often are we more concerned with our own self-protection, rather than doing as God has given us to do?
  • He also tells his wife to disguise herself – who is he trying to deceive? He tries to manipulate God’s power to suit himself.
  • God had already told Ahijah what to expect – he was blind, but he hadn’t disqualified himself from doing what God had given him to do.

Meanwhile in the south Rehoboam was King.

  • But his kingdom just blended in with the rest of the world – how often do we do that? Are we willing to stand out?
  • Rehoboam seems to end up making a cheap replacement of what God has actually asked of him – are there areas in our lives where we have a tendency to do the same?

In the south Rehoboam is King over Judah, while in the north Jeroboam is King over 10 tribes in Israel which is where Jeremy focusses his attention in this talk.

The passage has four key points:
A truth: God speaks, as long as He is speaking, there is hope.
A warning: We can miss God speaking to us.
A promise: He passionately pursues us.
An invitation: To trust his leadership; as we bow the knee, He makes each of us true priests in the Kingdom.

1 Corinthians 13:13 NIV And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

But, if we’re going to build relationship with God, and one another from that foundation of love, we also have to know why. Building Godly relationship is intentional. It’s based on covenant together, not a legislative contract. We end up joined together in purpose through intimacy with God, His word and the directing and power of the Holy Spirit.

Now is the time for us to be purposeful in building together and joining together.

The global situation we find ourselves in can produce fear. But we are God’s church, the bride for His son. This is a time where He is calling our personal lives into order, that we can be the church He has called us to be, recognising that we are simply ‘passing through’ the here and now. This is not our final destination.

God is speaking to:

– The pilgrims – 1 Peter 2:1-12 – the 20-30’s age group: Push back the boundaries, go to new territories

– The exiles – Jeremiah 29:4 – the 40’s-60’s age group. Jeremiah was chosen from his birth – a 70 year plan – what’s our 70 year plan being sown into those coming behind us. Building something for the kingdom…

– Ambassadors (2 cor 5:29) veterans who have sacrificed. They’re the ‘pedlers at the city gate’. Those who have stood with the leadership. Encouraging at the city gate.

In chapter 11, Solomon’s weaknesses are totally exposed. God raises up enemies who are both internal and external to Solomon’s Kingdom. We see how ruthless God is when we don’t obey His commands. It’s quite terrifying – He’s a jealous God. But when He declares war, it’s not on us, but on the things we’re holding onto, or are holding onto us.

In this chapter we see that ignoring God’s warnings comes at our own peril. He warned Solomon to obey His commands, but Solomon’s heart was divided. Unlike his father, King David, he didn’t delight in the Lord, which left him vulnerable to other temptations. At the beginning of the chapter we learn that Solomon ‘clung’ to his foreign wives in love. The wives that God had warned him not to take because they would turn his heart.

What do we cling to? What or who do we turn to in moments of insecurity and doubt? Those are the things that become our idols, and divide our heart. The best way to get rid of my idols is to ask God to help me to delight in Him…

This chapter is a tale of two halves. All appears to be going well, on the surface… v1-13 tells us about Solomon’s wisdom, fame and fortune, but v14-29 reveals how Solomon had lost sight of God and was violating his law.

What is God saying to us through this?

We can consider for ourselves the contrast in Solomon as one with great gifting but poor character. Do we operate in the gifting that God has given us? How do we go about this? Do we fall into the same trap as Solomon, and use our gifting as a safety net to avoid fully relying on God? How do we partner with Him to both exercise and submit our gift, and develop character?

In this chapter God promises that He will be faithful to Solomon’s prayers, and that His presence will fill the temple. But, the promise is conditional: Solomon’s request was that God would forgive the people’s sin and guide them. God’s answer was ‘if you walk with me in integrity of heart and godliness…and obey my commands, decrees and regulations, then I will establish the throne of your dynasty over Israel for ever’.

We see this pattern throughout scripture. For example, Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give and you will receive.

Hebrews 11 shows that without faith it’s impossible to please God. But faith comes from hearing the word of God. Here we see that action is also necessary. It’s not enough simply to hear, we must also obey: John 14:15 says ‘if you love me, obey my commands. In 1 Kings 9: 6-7 God warns Solomon ‘if you disobey my commands and worship other gods, I’ll cut off Israel, reject the temple and make Israel a mockery in front of all nations.

In following chapters we’ll see that Solomon doesn’t treat what God has said to him seriously.

Psalm 84:5,7 NIV Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage… [7] They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

LifeLine Church’s senior leader, John Singleton, has spent his life living by this psalm. His focus can clearly be seen through his desire to be able to stand before God in Zion and relate to Him as Jesus taught us. Being in his later stages of life, he is keen to impart the values he has lived by – and that were forged in the fire of his encounters with God. King Solomon followed his father, King David’s plan, but missed the purpose. King David loved the presence of God (Ps 27: 4 ‘The one thing I ask of the LORD- the thing I seek most- is to live in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, delighting in the LORD’s perfections and meditating in his Temple…) – even dancing in the most un-Kingly manner when the ark was moved, causing Bathsheba to scoff at him.

King Solomon was different – you don’t get the same impression of joy in the presence of God. He seems more caught up in his own role in building the temple… The Spirit of God met with the congregation of LifeLine Church powerfully on this particular Sunday. Allow His presence to minister to you as you listen…

Solomon honours his father, King David, by choosing some of his father’s team to continue under his administration. In our context, it’s good to honour the wisdom and revelation that’s come before us. Solomon also brings in the sons and grandchildren of those who have gone before in recognition that they had wisdom and experience that had been passed to them. Who are we investing in, in the coming generations?

But God chooses to use people who don’t always make good decisions, and Solomon was one of those. For example, Solomon chooses to appoint someone who rules over forced labour – something which ultimately broke up the Kingdom.

Solomon got so much right, acting with great wisdom – and yet he still got so many things wrong. The same can be true of us…

There have been a lot of studies into thankfulness showing that expressing and receiving gratitude causes our brains to release chemicals called dopamine and seratonin - the feel good chemicals for our brains.
