Born in Italy during World War II, Salvatore Forcina was a young boy who survived all odds by living through his young childhood without any real or proper shelter. Like many Italians during this time, a month after turning eight years old his parents followed this migration to Argentina, a developing country at the time rich with natural resources and hope for a more stable life. Sent away to live with Redemptorist priests for seven long years as the only available option to study, this young boy struggled emotionally and psychologically with no social outlets and little emotional development. Salvatore’s dream to study medicine and help people propelled him to carry on and continue his education, eventually being educated and living on three different continents, each with a new language to learn and master. Despite his meager beginnings which provided no social and little educational opportunity and despite the many years and setbacks it took him to accomplish this, his goal was ultimately accomplished because of his sheer determination. This true-life story is motivating, uplifting, and based on what genuine love of family can provide to someone.

Americans got their first big exposure to the Shaolin monks with the 1970s TV series Kung Fu starring David Carradine. In the intro, we see him as a young monk completing a rite of passage ceremony where he had to lift and move a heavy cauldron filled with glowing cinders, and in doing so his arms were branded with a dragon and a tiger. For all his quiet wisdom and serenity, this monk had fighting skills that were unsurpassed. It was a combination that was deeply attractive to Western audiences of the seventies obsessed with the superiority of Eastern enlightenment over Western materialism.

Oluwafemi Oladeji shares his personal  journey from being an actor, singer, model, yoga teacher, to becoming a Shaolin Monk, and how it has shaped in personal and professional life.

With today’s increased focus on diversity and inclusion, executives, chief diversity officers, and human resources leaders love to extol the value of bringing our authentic selves to the workplace. Still, for many African American women in corporate America, that platitude falls on deaf ears.

So, in this episode, we talk to Shayna Renee Hammond about the state of African American Women in the public and private sector.

Shayna Renee Hammond is a leadership and life coach who has coached and developed thousands of school and senior leaders within the education and non-profit sectors for 20 years. She is the Founder and CEO of Lead For Liberation (formerly known as Teach To Lead), a leadership development organization dedicated to guiding organizations, school districts, foundations, and communities to demystify and operationalize liberatory cultures. Through Lead For Liberation’s (L4L) support, schools and organizations across America have experienced unprecedented school growth and achievement outcomes, inclusive school and organizational cultures, and strengthened teacher, principal, and senior leader retention.

Inspired by the success of L4L and her calling to raise global consciousness, Shayna recently founded IndigoWomen, a coaching and consulting practice dedicated to creating spaces, methods, and conditions for Black women in leadership to thrive. In this capacity, Shayna coaches individuals and groups of Black women leaders from around the globe in a spiritually-inspired and research-based coaching methodology created by and for Black women.

Words are a powerful thing. Words can build and lift, comfort and calm, teach and inspire.  To the opposite, words can destroy and demolish, incite and enrage, berate and criticize, embarrass and demean.  It has been said that in an average day a person will speak somewhere between 10 and 20,000 words. Which means we have that tons of chances every day to say something positive or to say something negative, the choice is totally up to us.

There is an old saying that “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Whoever came up with that saying had it completely wrong…what they saying needed to say is “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but unkind words will always hurt me…and a broken bone can heal with time, but the damage done by unkind words might never heal.”

My next guest understands the power of words, and is passionate about helping people to unlearn the negative things they’ve said to themselves or were said about them. Through his work over the past 40 years, he has taught countless thousands of people how to improve various aspects of their lives.

His latest book, 'How to Be Bulletproof From Criticism' has attracted rave reviews from health professionals, business owners and world class entrepreneurs.

Committing to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEI&B) is not about having a feel-good story; it’s not even about being an employer of choice. DEI&B is about the success of your business and, quite frankly, doing the right thing.

I sat down with Torin Ellis, to talk about how world is changing and prioritizing having a diverse, equitable and inclusive organization where every employee, at every level of the organization, knows they can bring their whole self to work is key.

Torin Ellis describes himself first and foremost in human terms: a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother and an adviser. But professionally, he is also an expert on diversity and inclusion strategy, a risk mitigator and a tremendous speaker. Torin wants us all to take a closer look at diversity and inclusion (D&I) than what we may have heard from training exercises that simply checked off boxes. And he isn’t afraid to challenge people to have conversations that push them out of their comfort zones.

For too long, women have been told to confine themselves—physically, socially, and emotionally. So on this episode, Dr. Shields sits down with Eliza VanCort, author of A Woman's Guide to Claiming Space, to discuss the inequalities and systems of oppression that take shape in private, professional, and public spaces.

Eliza identifies the five critical behaviors of all "Space Claiming Queens": use your voice and posture to project confidence and power, end self-sabotage, forge connections, neutralize unsafe spaces, and unite across differences. Through personal narrative, research, and actionable strategies, VanCort provides how-tos on combatting challenges like antimentors and microaggressions and advises on building up your "old girls" club, asking for what you're worth, and owning your Space without apology.

Eliza VanCort is a teacher, consultant, and speaker who provides the necessary tools for women to rewrite the rules and create the stories of their choice safely and without apology.

The ancient Egyptians' attitude towards death was influenced by their belief in immortality. They regarded death as a temporary interruption rather than the cessation of life. To ensure the continuity of life after death, people paid homage to the gods, both during and after their life on earth. When they died, they were mummified so the soul would return to the body, giving it breath and life.

Author Robert Ginsberg started researching the evidence for survival of consciousness and immortality soon after his daughter died in 2002. Devastated by the loss, he needed science to tell him if she still existed in some form. He stopped by the SoundBalming to share his story.

What do monks, Olympians, and entrepreneurs all share in common?

At first glance, it is the differences between the three callings that appear most starkly. Monks devote their life to inconspicuous prayer and work in the stillness and stability of a monastic setting, while Olympians train and mold their body into a state of almost inhuman physical prowess, often gaining fame and vast fan followings as they do so. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs innovate, thinking outside the box and presenting new goods or services at the doors of the public. Although in quite different ways, monks, Olympians, and entrepreneurs do share a common pursuit: the pursuit of greatness.

In this episode, Reginald Gant shares the habits to help you unlock your greatness. Reginald is a man of many dreams who is out to serve the masses. He is a 4X author and Founder of Serve4Men, LLC and the SERVE principles, which is a personal development vehicle used to educate men, fathers, and husbands. He equips and encourages them to step into their leadership roles as protectors and providers by challenging them with the question “why not me” instead of allowing them to settle for less so that they can live life with a clear conscience and without regret. Reginald’s purpose is to assist men in finding their way because there is no manual or guide for manhood and fatherhood.

Philosophers, researchers, spiritual leaders—they’ve all debated what makes life worth living. Is it a life filled with happiness or a life filled with purpose and meaning? Is there even a difference between the two?

Think of the human rights activist who fights oppression but ends up in prison—is she happy? Or the social animal who spends his nights (and some days) jumping from party to party—is that the good life?

These aren’t just academic questions. They can help us determine where we should invest our energy to lead the life we want.

In the episode, Sid Garza-Hillman and I explore these questions in depth, trying to tease apart the differences between a meaningful life and a happy one.

Sid Garza-Hillman is the author of Approaching the Natural: A Health Manifesto and Raising Healthy Parents: Small Steps, Less Stress, and a Thriving Family. Over the last seven months, as the Covid-19 virus has continued its spread, our worlds have become smaller. Working from home has morphed from a novelty to the mundane. Travel for business or pleasure, once routine, has become nonexistent. Seeing friends, going to our favorite restaurants, visiting family — the list of things we can’t do, and won’t be able to for months to come, is endless.

Peter Quinn stopped to talk about how the lack of novelty in our Covid existence can negatively impact our creativity — our ability to put ideas together in new, useful combinations to solve problems.

Peter Quinn describes what he does as being a creative director working at the nexus of brand, culture, and purpose. As a creative professional, he helps organizations grow, engage, shift beliefs and attitudes, and sometimes what he makes inspires people to act. Peter believes that everyone contains many selves. His past experience of being a performer in bands, painter, curator, video creator, and even little league baseball coach, father, and husband– has allowed him to bring a lens to his projects– one that is uniquely his.

On the surface, it may appear that we live in an extrovert’s world and that the most vocal, visible, and socially connected people employ more natural confidence and presence. Society tends to view more outgoing people as having a desired “it-factor,” propelling them to higher levels of success than those who are more introverted.

However, introverted people possess a great deal of positive attributes that are becoming more valued in both personal and professional realms. These include strengths like good listening skills, being more thoughtful and strategic in their decision-making, and the ability to pay attention and provide intuitive insight—all demonstrating a high level of confidence to the outside world.

Visibility Expert Amelia Roberts joins me to share some simple introvert-friendly ways to channel your inner confidence and become more visible.

Perfectionism is officially infamous — it is now one of the most popular responses to the interview question “What is your biggest weakness?”. It is quite likely that perfectionism is assumed to be a strength that manifests as a weakness, hence desirable and safely sharable in a job interview. However, even as we tout perfectionism as weakness, most of us have not spent the time to realize its true perils. Many of us fall into the trap of perfectionism. It is pervasive and on the rise, impacting individuals, teams, and organizations.

If perfectionistic thinking is causing you stress, listen to Dr. Shelly Johnson as she shares some steps you can take to work toward healing on your own.

Shelly Johnson teaches ethics and a variety of other philosophy classes at Georgetown College in Kentucky. She blogs at Love is Stronger.

Why is it that some people seem to shine in any sphere in which they choose to exert themselves, and others cannot manage even a glimmer despite obvious talent?

Research shows that it’s the way that they think about their ability that really counts.

Most of those who have achieved greatness, to use Shakespeare’s phrase, have worked extremely hard to get there. Many were told that they would never amount to anything. But they believed that they could achieve, and worked hard to do so.

Andi Saitowitz joins me to talk about how working on your own mindset could be the single most important thing you ever do to help you achieve success.

How do you sum up a life in 30 to 40 pages? By highlighting the poignant moments, funny stories, and unique photos that sum up what life is all about: childhood, culture, love, military service, hope, death, raising kids... life challenges and how we overcome them.

These are the unifying experiences that should be celebrated, captured, and shared with future generations. These are the stories that come out in our unique interview process to create one-of-a-kind keepsake albums that your family will treasure, pass down, and revisit for years to come.

To talk about writing and the power of story, I sat down with author and storyteller Corey Johnson. Corey is the author of Courageous, a story loosely based on the life of Avon "Flubber" Johnson Sr. In this story, a young man from the streets of Baltimore is raised by a single mother and a family of proud, hard-working Carolina folk who has a lot of Faith and Pride. Still, because of Flubber' lifestyle, he ended in prison and consequently died from AIDS.

While the idea of connecting with the supernatural realm might conjure images of gypsies and crystal balls, those stereotypes don’t hold true to the modern psychic. Nor do the “reality” shows involving ghost-hunting clairvoyants or sobbing celebrities communicating with dead people. Although skeptics are quick to debunk psychic abilities as pseudoscience, firm believers may go so far as to replace their therapists with frequent (even daily) psychic readings. (Which neither Barbie nor I suggest.)

To get a glimpse of the reality of a working psychic, I spoke to Barbie Dahl, a California based “medium.” While other kids his age were playing dress-up, seven-year-old Barbie was reading her friends. She knew he was different than other children and so did her friends and family.

One of the aspects that I found refreshing in Barbie’s unpretentious approach is her belief that everyone possesses psychic abilities but might not know how to harness them. “I’m a firm believer that everybody is ‘psychic’ and has a connection to the nonphysical realm,” she said. “It’s just like developing a muscle or validating it, trusting it, learning how to have that form of connection, and strengthening it.”

Barbi's soul purpose is to bridge the gap between the living and the deceased. She is able to communicate with souls on the "other side" using her clairvoyance (seeing), clairaudience (hearing), clairsentience (feeling), and claircognizance (knowing).

For more information about Barbie, visit her site at www.pathwaystogratitude.com.

I think it’s safe to say none of us want a repeat of 2020, in 2021.

It’s time to close the books on another year and hit the reset button — quite possibly the most anticipated reset of all time.

A New Year brings new energy and new hope for the future. We all need it after 2020.
So, what’s going to change within you when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st?

A New Year will not translate into a New You unless you take bold actions towards your future through eliminating behaviors that have held you back in the past.
You can say the right things. Hope for the best outcomes. Possess the best intentions.
Yet, if you don’t eliminate the useless behaviors and take action towards a breakthrough, then all of it is for nothing.
In this interview with Dr. Joe Johnson, you’ll find the mindsets, behaviors, and ideas that have prevented you from having personal breakthroughs in the past. If you want to avoid an empty feeling at the end of 2021, it’s time to take action towards eliminating these behaviors right now and focusing on having a successful 2021.

In this episode, I talk with author Sean Rosensteel,  founder of the Intentional Living Academy, to get his blueprint for what it means to live a perfectly intentional life.

With a passion for helping others, Sean's journey began when he found himself bankrupt at the age of 28 after following conventional wisdom all his life. Jeff has tapped into his creativity throughout his career and brought it forward in many different ways. In that process, he has developed this philosophy around creativity as a tool to be seen, expressed, and healed.

Jeff burns with a mission— to inspire and teach writers, artists, songwriters, musicians, filmmakers, solopreneurs, arts organizations (and every other human with a heartbeat) to amp up their vision, tap into their potential and shine in the world.

He is the author of Not Fing Around—The No Bullsht Guide for Getting Your Creative Dreams Off the Ground is Jeff’s first book. It is really like an advice book if you want to be more creative. It is an adorable little book with some excellent illustrations. He will talk today about that book and share some advice and stories around being more creative in your own life. I certainly had a lot of fun interviewing Jeff, so I think you will enjoy the conversation.

Sherrill Mosee, inventor and designer of MinkeeBlue, set out to solve a problem she calls the “overload bag syndrome.” Like many women, Mosee carried two or three bags to work—a purse, laptop bag, lunch bag and sometimes shoes in a plastic grocery bag in her purse. She wanted to create an organizational fashion bag for busy women whose role changed throughout the day—from executive to fitness enthusiast, daily commuter and mom.

Mosee is the former president of Family Care Solutions, a nonprofit organization she founded to promote higher education among low-income women with children. The organization awarded over $3 million in childcare scholarships to help women with children stay in school and earn a college degree. An electrical engineer by profession, Mosee, designed the compartmented bag with a patented folding panel inside to separate items in the bag.

MinkeeBlue organizational travel and work bags have been featured on the Today Show, the Katie Couric Show and QVC.com. Mosee describes MinkeeBlue as a reflection of “who we are” and “what we do” in our daily lives: “Your day is in the Bag.”

Brendan D. Murphy is a preeminent “Change Agent” and a chronic “truth addict”. He has a compassionate heart, keen intellect, is deeply “spiritual,” and a no-bullshit humanitarian with a genuine disdain for political correctness and “acceptable lies.” Running on a fairly respectable “bandwidth,” he advocates something he calls “broad spectrum awareness,” meaning a big-picture, well rounded, multi-faceted worldview – the result of years of study (as opposed to ten minutes on Wikipedia). Throw away your blinkers and preconceptions about what it means to be spiritual (or anything else for that matter!), because Brendan will go where angels fear to tread, and he’s not afraid to drag you along for the ride kicking and screaming. Listen in as host LaMarr D. Shields talks with author Ed Kressey about the process of rebuilding their lives after struggling with the disease of addiction. Ed describes how and why he made the turn away from addiction to seek help and share the most significant lessons learned along the way—about shame, adversity, strength, perspective, and gratitude. Ed struggled through challenges and pain. After two decades of drug addiction—including 11 devastating years of addiction to methamphetamine—Ed had thrown away his life savings, biotech career, home…even his dog. He’d spent months in jail and four years in meth psychosis. He heard disembodied voices, believed vast conspiracies targeted him and estranged himself from everyone who’d tried to help him. His book, My Addiction & Recovery, is for readers seeking a greater understanding of the possibilities for power through adversity, via a personal, poignant, triumphant story. You will be inspired by his message, which is pointed, positive, and powerful: Redemption is possible, despite the most hopeless-seeming circumstances. Never give up on a human being…kindness is never wasted. Second chances benefit the giver (society), as well as the receiver.

Shea Butter has been extracted from the nut of the Shea tree in West Africa and used as cosmetic and therapeutic skin care lotion for thousands of years. It’s origins go as far back as Cleopatra’s Egypt, where it was carried in large clay jars for cosmetic use. Not long after, the healing properties of Shea Butter were discovered and optimized for use throughout the West African wooded savannah.Global trade of shea butter dates not only back to Cleopatra's Egypt, but was a very popular item of trade in the Middle Ages throughout West Africa and into the coastal regions. It was also traded heavily as an oil in European markets. As trade of Shea Butter spread throughout different regions of Africa in particular, it’s various uses began to diversify into things like soap and nasal decongestant. Shea Butter remains a popular substitute for cocoa butter in chocolate, though it still functions primarily as a skin care product as it has since the days of Cleopatra. If you’re interested in starting a bootstrapped business from scratch, or you just want to build a brand that’s completely your own, listen to Mary Benson, who shares how she takes pride in being Nigerian, and creating all-natural, hand-crafted products for your skin and hair. She uses nature's best moisturizer, shea butter, as the main ingredient in all of her products. She provides a variety of shea butter mixes that are blended with moisturizing oils and signature scents. All products are 100% handmade, vegan, and cruelty free for the entire family BioMary Benson is the owner of Jimmy&Mary's Authentic Body Care. Eric Christiansen is an acclaimed documentarian who has built his brand around socially responsible filmmaking that educates, inspires and heals. He has the capability to identify an issue within a specific population and have it resonate with a general audience through compelling storytelling. A trauma survivor himself, having lost his home in the Santa Barbara Painted Cave fire disaster, he understands trauma, the resilience of the human spirit, and how important HOPE is to the healing journey. A seven-time Southwestern Region Emmy Award recipient, Christiansen's previous films (Faces in the Fire, Homecoming: A Vietnam Vets Journey, Searching for Home: Coming Back from War) have been transformative in the recovery process for thousands of people whose lives have been compromised mentally, spiritually and physically by trauma. Leveraged as educational tools by top mental health institutions, Christiansen's films migrate from the entertainment arena into environments that help additional audiences navigate the profound collateral damage trauma creates not only on the individual, but the family and community as well. The New York Times called his last film, "strikingly photographed" and "...sure to give comfort and support to countless veterans and their families." By spotlighting these survivors and their journeys, Christiansen has been able to help unify a variety of audiences around the power of HOPE, and educate the general population about the complexities of trauma. Christiansen has also produced for major networks including Discovery, TLC, PBS, MTV and an Imax film.

Ever wonder what the hidden power of words is?

My next guest would cringe at the sight of the grammar on this blog as I often confuse “Whom with Who,” and “Affect with Effect.”

For me, it’s always been about the passion behind my words, not the grammar or structure (that may also be my cop-out since I almost flunked English in high school).

The magic of words, however, happens when we learn to use the correct grammar coupled with passion… that’s when the real inspiration happens in creating a visual story and powerful emotions with the readers.

In this episode, I sit down with the communication expert, Ayesha Gallion to talk about the power of words and her new podcast, I’m  Speaking Now.”

Ask for what you want, get what you want. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But as Bobby Audley explains in this inspiring episode, sometimes it’s the smallest words, the simplest steps, and 50 cups of coffee that can make the biggest difference in our lives.

By setting the goal of having coffee with 50 people forces you to be clear about your goals. Making the goal public, one person at a time, also makes it much stronger. Having 50 coffees is good because then you have to commit to the specific move that you want to make. You’ll also get input from smart and interesting people.

The hidden insight in the 50 coffees idea is that the biggest changes in your life will only happen through the people that you meet and conversations you have. Human beings create and convey meaning through stories and conversations. If you change the conversations that you’re a part of, then your life changes automatically.

I’ve been lucky enough to travel around the country telling folks about the history of soul food. Along the way, I learned a sure-fire way to bring an energetic audience into a stunned silence. I tell them that “vegan” is the hottest trend in soul food. Many African Americans have gnashed their teeth (some have even wailed) after hearing this news. Why? Because vegan cuisine, with its lack of animal products (dairy, lard and meat) is so completely at odds with what the food they grew up eating in their parents’ or grandparents’ kitchen. No fried chicken or catfish? Greens without any ham hocks? No macaroni and cheese? Yes, they have a point, but when one takes a peek further back into African American culinary history, one comes away with a surprising conclusion. The words “vegan” and “soul food” actually can belong in the same sentence, and Greg Brown does a great job of explaining it.

As a society, we learn about the world and advance our well being through science and engineering. The United States may be known around the world for its higher education, but compared to many other leading and steadily emerging countries, we lack a strong focus on educating scientists and engineers. One significant reason that we have fallen behind is that we do not encourage our female students to pursue career paths in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Dr. K. Renee Horton believes this needs to change, as the lack of women in STEM will continue to plague our country until all students, regardless of sex, have adequate opportunities to explore math and science throughout elementary, middle and high school. As a NASA trained engineer, she is on a mission to help minority girls get excited about a future in STEM careers.

Across the country, thousands of young people are without permanent homes. Service providers and policy makers have not known how many of these young people exist or how to meet their needs. That picture is changing due to the work of a Rebeka Beach, Director at Project Connect.
Founded in 1996, Project Connect provides advocacy paired with specialized educational services and lifestyle enrichment opportunities for children who have neither a voice nor a choice, in being homeless. Cincinnati Public Schools serves about 1,700 students whose families are homeless.

We caught up with Rebeka at the National Youth At Risk Conference in Savannah, Georgia to talk about her work with homeless youth,  loss, poverty, and educational challenges.  And how, despite those setbacks, many of the youth she services express optimism and hope for their future.

It’s been one week since federal authorities announced that 50 people — including actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman — participated in a massive scam focused on getting wealthy children accepted to elite universities.

The scandal has sparked an intense discussion about wealth, privilege, and access to America’s most selective schools. But the ongoing fallout, and other recent stories about race-conscious admissions at Harvard and growing racial disparities in New York City’s selective high schools, provide a chance to examine a larger issue: how racial, educational, and economic inequality and discrimination collide to create a system where low-income students of color — particularly black and Hispanic students — struggle to access a quality education.

Well, the average student doesn't have wealthy families and don't have trust funds. Therefore, they have to apply for student loans. In Student Loans Are The Devil, educational leader, and author Shatavia Elder combines a deeply personal narrative of her own journey through student loan debt along with practical strategies that will help you. No matter where you are on this journey, this book and interview are geared to help you create personalized solutions to lessen the mental burden of the debt and to develop specific skills to help you use your past experiences and your debt as a foundation of your future freedom. Your financial freedom toward a more purposeful life is within your reach.

Parenting a child with a disability can be a challenge, and often those challenges feel like a strong tidal wave coming, threatening to make parents lose their balance, to fall, and sometimes wanting to give up.

Despite the stares, the school system, the medical billing, the ignorance from other people, and or the lack of support, Tracy Ward or Sista Tracy, as she prefers to be called, speaks about finding beauty in brokenness with gritty honesty and openness. She's passionate about sharing the real – sometimes beautiful and sometimes ugly – aspects of faith, parenting, and raising a child with special needs.

I’ve been meditating and practicing yoga for 15 years — ever since I realized that meditation isn’t about sitting in a lotus pose surrounded hippies, pretending you’re as calm as Buddha while pondering what’s for dinner and planning responses to work emails. Meditation is the best tool in the world — life-changing, in fact — for connecting with yourself and making your wildest visions come into fruition.

So, I was excited to sit down with talk with yoga and meditation teacher Leonora Eubanks.  Leonora shares her insights into anxiety, fear, and schizophrenia and how mindfulness and meditation can be of benefit to those struggling with these forces.

But the root of her story stretches far beyond fashion and entrepreneurship, its premise focuses on empowerment and having the fortitude to forge ahead when you’ve given up hope. Shantell Roberts can remember the exact time her mother called her at work to say that she’d found Roberts’ 1-year-old daughter unresponsive in the bed. It was 9:48 a.m. – and the moment everything in her life changed.

Tylour Marie had been sick with a fever and vomiting, but doctors didn’t seem too worried, telling Roberts to come back in three days if her daughter hadn’t improved. At the time, it all seemed fairly routine.

But the viral infection doctors thought Tylour had turned out to be MRSA pneumonia, and, despite doing everything doctors told her to do, on the day after Valentine’s Day in 2011, Roberts’ baby girl died.

Shantell joined us in the BalmShelter to talk about her beginnings as an advocate, as well as how she started Touching Young Lives., a nonprofit focused on public education for best practices in infant care.

Being happy doesn't have to be hard, says prominent executive coach Anisa Rashad. We each possess an internal compass that expresses our individual wisdom and points to the things that would most fulfill us.

On this interview, Anisa offers tried-and-true strategies that help us to access our own inner knowledge to achieve what she calls JIL: Juicy Integrated Life, in which gains come more easily because we've learned to honor our true desires and work with our individual talents rather than exhausting our energy on a traditional model of achievement. Her techniques focus on asking ourselves what we really want instead of frenetically trying to "have it all." We learn to ask questions that move us forward, not backward, to discover our own unique "lucrative purpose," and to design a "SuiteSpot" that draws to us the more rewarding existence we deserve. This is one of my favorite interviews to date. It really delves into the details of how Kyle Pompey found his niche, and started to excel in it. We also reminiscence on the days when Kyle was my student, and what he learned from me. Most importantly though, we discover how Kyle has found his own style and the inspiration behind his shooting. And how you can do the same. If you’re an aspiring photographer or just need a bit of inspiration, then this interview is for you.

Kyle Pompey is a professional photographer living in Baltimore, Maryland, who considers himself an "organic photojournalist." Whether collaborating in his studio or documenting throughout his travels, Kyle avoids posed or planned pictures. Instead, he perceives the energy of his subject, which he allows to define the story of the moment. Inspiring imagination is the goal of Perspective: Baltimore. Designed to promote freethinking every image will deliver a different narrative from the reader.

A Baltimore native, Kyle is featured in a variety of publications such as The Huffington Post, GQ, Essence, Japan Magazine, and The Baltimore Sun Dark Room. His images have also been used in a collection of artistic works such as the Reginald F. Lewis Museums “Reflections of Baltimore” exhibit, Tariq Toure's "Black Seeds: The Poetry and Reflections of Tariq Toure," and Aaron Maybin's "Art Activism." He also runs a youth photography camp called “Youth Perspective: Baltimore Photography Camp”.

After an interaction with Howard County police in 2012 that he found deeply troubling, filmmaker A.J. Ali says he was motivated to address relations between police and the African-American community.

AJ — teamed up with Errol Webber, a Maryland Institute College of Art alumnus and cinematographer who previously worked on an Oscar-winning documentary short. With Ali as director and Webber as director of photography, they produced "Walking While Black: L.O.V.E. Is the Answer," which discusses bridging the gap in police-community relations throughout America. The acronym "L.O.V.E.," coined by Ali, is to encourage people to "learn about others in their community, open their heart to them, volunteer to be part of the solution in their life, and empower others to do the same. The solutions-focused documentary features nearly 30 interviews with members of communities across the country. Current and retired law enforcement members — including Baltimore Police Chief Melvin T. Russell, commander of the department's community collaboration division, and retired Los Angeles police Sgt. Cheryl Dorsey — appear along with community leaders, social workers and psychologists who discuss the effects of racial profiling on American communities and tragic instances in the history of police-community relations, which include the deaths of Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland and the five members of law enforcement who died in a shootout in Dallas in July. Some experts say domestic violence is a common thread in mass shootings. Mildred Muhammad, D.C. Sniper John Allen Muhammad's ex-wife, said she knows about the connection first-hand. She joins me in the BalmShelter to describe her living nightmare.

It is not just “a” story – it is “one of the many” stories built on the experiences of domestic violence and the depths of its terror. After her children were kidnapped and her inability to go on living without them, she began the silent struggle of looking for them, knowing that if she exposed herself, John Allen Muhammad would locate her and kill her. She was triumphant in her struggle to get through those 18 months of not knowing where her children were and re-gained full custody of them. She fled from her estranged husband and moved to Maryland with the children. She was frightened during the horrific sniper shootings, sat through court proceedings during the trial, and last but not least, began re-gaining her strength to start a non-profit organization, After The Trauma, to assist survivors of domestic violence.
