A podcast about 3 friends (JP, Father Chuck and Matt) who grew up in the church, and their journey through pop culture, fandom, and weird Christian trends.
This week, JP, Father Chuck and Matt have a good ol' fashion RIFF-SESH. If you're not familiar, a riff-sesh is when the gang doesn't have a specific topic in mind but would rather share what's been digging in their craws and speak candidly and off-the-cuff. This week JP is feeling a little down about not being able to find the motivation to follow through on creative projects, something a lot of creatives struggle with, right? Listen in to see how the Masters of Divinity endeavor to follow through on artistic pursuits!

We did it! 200 episodes, baby!
In this episode, we celebrate our 200th episode by covering Peter Jackson's latest opus, the hit Disney+ documentary THE BEATLES: GET BACK. Jackson's documentary is an exhaustive, fly-on-the-wall look at The Beatles during the recording of their album LET IT BE. As some of you know, all three of us here are big Beatles fans, and the documentary is not just an ode to their latest process, but also lays bare the bands experiences during the stressful recording session, which brings to light all kinds of new discoveries that challenges many notions that fans have had for decades. Join us as we explore these notions, and celebrate THE BEATLES and their creative process in our 200th episode extravaganza. Also, Matt's here! Rejoice!

And we're BACK, BABY!
After a lengthy hiatus, Father Chuck and JP have returned to talk about translating and interpreting the Bible. They not only go into the history of translating scripture, but also talk about their own experiences and frustrations with translations, as well as with people who are die-hard devoted to one translation over the other. Father Chuck also gives his advice on how to find the right translation for you, if you're curious about that kind of thing. LISTEN UNTIL THE END!!! We've got somethin' for ya!

This week, with an increasing interest in exploring the more fantastical and mystical side of the Christian faith, Father Chuck and JP talk about angels. They go over the hierarchy of angels, dispel some myths about their depiction (thanks in large part to Renaissance art), and develop a new class in the heirarchy: The Shoulderheim. What exactly is the Shoulderheim? You'll have to listen to find out!

Well, it's been a minute, hasn't it? Fear not, because we're back, and unlike most media outlets, JP and Father Chuck have some thoughts on DUNE! Dune is the latest iteration of the Frank Herbert sci-fi classic, directed by Denis Villeneuve. It's taken a LONG time, but we think that we finally have an adaptation of the novel that's worthy of praise! Even though JP really likes Lynch's Dune. Anyway, sorry for the little unannounced break, we hope you enjoy our in-depth discussion of DUNE!

So for the last couple of months we've talked about every Jaws movie, tackled Christian Hedonism, recounted our favorite Seinfeld episodes about religion, defeated Capitalism, and brought you one spooky-ass playlist for your Halloween parties. So, we're a little pooped, and we thought this week we'd take 'er easy and have ourselves a good ol' fashion riff-sesh. You remember these, right? No planned topic, just us speaking our minds on whatever we feel like. One thing we focus on a lot in this particular riff-sesh is the fascination with the 60s, a thing that we are very annoyed with. So hit play, and let it riff.

Whether you've got a Halloween party around the corner to host/attend, or you're just looking for some All Hallow's Eve vibes, you're gonna need some spooky tunes. So this week, Father Chuck and JP have curated their own playlists filled with all kinds of Halloween music goodness. Whether you're looking for a vibe like Planet Claire by the B-52s, or something more on the nose like Wolf Like Me by TV On the Radio, or classics like Thriller, you've come to the right place!

This week, JP and Father Chuck go in on that mode of production based on private ownership of the means of production: CAPITALISM. We give our thoughts, our critiques, our experiences, and also take the time to highlight the current struggle over wages in Hollywood. We don't normally get political on this podcast, mainly because we're not super interested in being one of those divisive, hot-topic, firebrand shows that serve just to outrage our audience and drive them to yell at family members on Thanksgiving. Personally, this might be one of the more gentler critiques of Capitalism you'll find on the web. We hope you'll listen, we hope you'll like, we hope you'll think long and hard about the ideas that we present, and join us in pondering whether or not Capitalism is absolutely necessary for a society to thrive (spoiler: it isn't, it's evil, it sucks).

JP and Father Chuck are massive, devoted fans of the hit sitcom Seinfeld. And if you haven't heard the news, that joint's on Netflix as we speak. So we went ahead and watched some episodes centered on religion, yadda yadda yadda, you got this episode to listen to. Enjoy!

So we all know that Father Chuck's the Sci-Fi Guy and JP is the Horror Guy. But what happens the two are combined for Halloween? You get an in-depth look at the Atomic Age Sci-Fi & Horror of the 1950s, baby! While people are planning their lists of horror movies to watch during October, people tend to lean toward the gothic, the spooky, and the straight-up uncanny. But most people seem to forget that there's a place in the Halloween Canon of Movies for films like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, War of the Worlds, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and so much more. Listen to JP and Father Chuck talk about some of their favorites, the historical context and meaning behind these films, and they even wander into "comeuppance horror" that was popularized by EC Comic titles like Tales From the Crypt, which was running concurrently with the Atomic Age. So let the Masters of Divinity guide you through some must-watch movies you'll want to add to your Halloween movie marathon this year.

If you've ever heard the phrase, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him," then you're probably familiar with Christian Hedonism, which is one provocative title! It probably conjures images that don't belong together, like Jesus and Hedonism Bot from FUTURAMA. But it's a real thing; a theology conceived by famous modern theologian John Piper, a Neo-Calvinist and Reformed Christian. In this week's episode, we're categorizing Piper's theology as a Christian Curiosity, and will be exploring its concepts as such. But don't worry, we're still gonna be funny.

In the previous episode, we talked about the Brothers Brody and Their Many Shark Adventures, and since you were all good sports to let us indulge in our love of these bonkers sequels, we figured why not go ahead and talk about the famed original: the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic, JAWS. There's so much to love about Jaws: the music, the performances, the gruesome kills, the high seas adventure, and so much more, which is why JP and Father Chuck hold JAWS in a special place in their hearts. We can laugh our way through the sequels, but JAWS is truly a cinematic masterpiece as a monster movie, an oceanic adventure, or as just a movie about three guys being dudes. JP and Father Chuck go into immense detail as to why JAWS means so much to them and why it's such a great film. You can check it out in the Spotify player above, or literally ANYWHERE podcasts are available.

When it was released in theaters in 1975, JAWS was a major hit, terrifying audiences and creating an entire generation of aquaphobes, thalassophobes, and submechaniphobes. Steven Spielberg's debut in cinemas was studded with a terrific cast, a chilling story, and horrifying special effects. The sequels? Eh...not so much. But one of them takes place in Sea World! Listen, we know these movies don't even begin to add up to the greatness of the Spielberg classic, but JP and Father Chuck have a special place in their hearts for JAWS 2 and even the unfortunate JAWS 3-D and JAWS 4: How Ellen Brody Got Her Groove Back. What I'm saying is that you won't find another podcasting duo who would talk so fondly of timeless characters like Helicopter Pilot, Cindy & Sandy, and of course Hoagie. So press play and let us tell you why these sequels are fun to watch despite the bad press, and why JP's biggest regret in life was not being the skipper on the ill-fated Jaws ride.

We're finally in the middle of the wet, hot, American summer and JP & Father Chuck couldn't help but to reminisce about their summer days spent at various summer camps growing up. They talk about their shared experiences from Space Camp in Florida, while JP also tells us a few tales from his time spent at rich kid military camp. You'll hear this and so much more when you press play on that podcast machine, and listen to this week's edition of MASTERS OF DIVINITY.

An unofficial but ongoing series on this podcast is "Christian Curiosities," where we reflect and examine Christian trends from the days of yor. These trends permeated Christian communities and usually across denominations, and it was the Christian Bookstore that enabled these curiosities to spread and thrive. If one wanted to put their thumb on the pulse of Christianity in America, all one had to do was visit a Christian Bookstore. But since the advent of the internet, and shopping online, as well as downward trends in Church attendance, the Christian Bookstore is beginning to go extinct (not unlike other brick and mortar companies -- It's a new world out there). Before the Christian Bookstore goes the way of the Dodo, JP and Father Chuck reflect on the Christian Curiosities they themselves used to buy, examine why the Christian Bookstore was such a phenomenon, and how, in the end, they may have served as more of a detriment to Christianity in America.

We've seen the evidence. We have some thoughts.
UFO's are back baby! Seriously, it's like 1995 up in here with the UFO mania going down. In 2017 the government confirmed the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects, and just this month the Pentagon has submitted a report to congress explaining their findings. JP and Father Chuck have been preparing for this moment their whole lives, and in this episode they go over video footage and photographic evidence that has recently been made public. Are they aliens or a secret government experiment? If this does prove the existence of aliens, how would that effect someone's faith? JP and Father Chuck put their expertise to work as they attempt to get to the bottom of this UFO guff, and you don't want to miss it.

Remember way, way, way back in the distant year of 2012? Before pandemics, Donald Trump's presidency, and NFTs? There was a movie that came out that summer called PROMETHEUS, and it was a prequel of sorts to the ALIEN franchise. People were really looking forward to it because the ALIEN franchise had fallen on hard times, and legendary director Ridley Scott was here to bring it back to its original glory. Well, turns out the movie was more divisive than people expected, and even JP and Father Chuck were disappointed. But time has passed, and the Masters of Divinity have decided to give PROMETHEUS a second chance, and it turns out...it's not that bad! Press play and listen to JP and Father Chuck talk Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS.

Time to smash our heads on the punk rock!
In our final episode of Music Mayhem, The Wheel of Mayhem deemed Christian punk's "Prime Candidate for a Burnout" by Blenderhead worthy of closing out this year's series. Rounding out our completely unplanned series-within-a-series about the Christian recording industry, Blenderhead couldn't be further away from what dc Talk and Jars of Clay represented. Raw, uncompromising, visceral...LOUD. Blenderhead was a hardcore Christian punk band from the legendary underground label Tooth and Nail Records. Father Chuck grew up with this album, but JP didn't even know who Blenderhead was until he put it on the wheel. Press play, and get ready to experience "Prime Candidate for a Burnout" by Blenderhead.

This week, JP and Father Chuck visit another seismic album in the 90s Contemporary Christian scene: Jars of Clay's self-titled debut album. Jars of Clay was drastically different from dc Talk in their style and approach to lyrics, embracing metaphorical lyrics and acoustic guitars, as well as a more independent sound. Do any of the songs still hold up? You might be surprised! Check out the episode today, and listen to the Masters of Divinity dive deep into JARS OF CLAY.

Music Mayhem keeps going because Music Mayhem can't be stopped! For some reason JP and Father Chuck decided to (dc) Talk about JESUS FREAK, the seismic Christian rock album that hit the charts and even managed to get some MTV airtime, something that's very important to Christian labels. Father Chuck has a fondness for the album, and JP has never listened to the album until recently. Does it still hold up? Find out! Music Mayhem will never end! It just keeps going! I'm serious, we can't stop it, and we don't know how. How do you stop Music Mayhem. Please help us.

Music Mayhem keeps on truckin', and this week we're truckin' to hell -- or heaven. Whichever you prefer, I guess. In 1979 Ozzy Osbourne was ousted from the legendary metal band Black Sabbath, and left a void that seemed impossible to fill. Enter one Ronnie James Dio, or as you and I know him: DIO. What should have been a recipe for disaster ended up being a massive success. The album was a hit, and featured one of the greatest metal tunes of all time, "Heaven and Hell." Dio also went on to be a major influence in the realm of heavy metal, inspiring countless bands and performers. This week, we dive deep into the 1980 album, which also happens to be Music Mayhem's first metal album! Press play, throw up the horns, and LOOK OUT!

Music Mayhem returns! And we're kicking it off with a pick by Father Chuck, "She's So Unusual" by Cyndi Lauper. This album is loaded with bangers, from the iconic 80s bop "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" to the all-timer ballad, "Time After Time," this is the album that cemented Cyndi Lauper as an 80s icon, and would influence pop music and female vocalists for years to come. But what did the Masters of Divinity think? Press play and find out today!

For our final episode in our unnamed series about Jesus-centric films, we watched Martin Scorsese's controversial classic, The Last Temptation of Christ. In the film, Jesus is portrayed by legendary actor Willem Dafoe, depicted as a man struggling with both the human and divine natures that dwell within Him. Martin Scorsese intended for the movie to spark discussion about Jesus, who He was, the nature of Christianity, and how it affects our daily lives, and we do our best to honor that with a deep discussion about the film, which is a true cinematic achievement, and easily the best movie we watched for the series.

This week, Father Chuck and Moderator JP talk about the extremely underwhelming 1979 classic, JESUS, a movie that was made in an attempt to create a visual translation of the Bible, and these days the film is used by THE JESUS PROJECT in an effort to convert people to Christianity through the language of cinema. Amazingly, it doesn't seem to be very good at any of these things.

Like Dracula and Sherlock Holmes, Jesus is a figure who's graced the screen since the advent of cinema. Some of these movies are spectacular, while most of them are...well, they tried. When Mel Gibson announced that he was going to direct a film about the final hours of Jesus' life, it became one of the most anticipated films of its time, as audiences were promised one of the most accurate and dramatic portrayals of Jesus ever put to screen. To kick off our new series where we take a look at a variety of films centered on Jesus, Father Chuck and JP discuss Mel Gibson's THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST.

All right, so it's more like an hour and fourty-five minutes, but "2 hours" just sounds cleaner. We round up here. Hey! There's a show out there on the Disney+ that all the kids are raving about, called WandaVision and it's apparently a big hit. WandaVision is the first show produced for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (there are other Marvel shows but this is the first one overseen by Feige and Co.), it's very unique in its presentation as it takes on the form of a sitcom every now and then, has a lot of twists and turns within its myserious plot. Naturally, the MoD were into it, and thought we should do an episode on it, so here we are. It should go without saying, this baby is RIDDLED with spoilers. So if you haven't watched WandaVision yet, proceed with extreme caution.

This week, we cap off our month-long series on the afterlife with a fun, light-hearted discussion of Pixar's latest hit, SOUL. Soul stars Jamie Foxx as the voice of Joe, a jazz musician who finds himself in the afterlife who desperately tries to get back to the land of the living. It's a wonderful film with a fascinating emotional journey, with themes that really resonated with the MoD crew. Obviously there are spoilers, so if you haven't seen Pixar's Soul be sure to check it out before listening/watching.

Continuing our series on the Christian afterlife, Father Chuck and JP discuss HELL. We go over all of the cultural depictions of Hell and how they compare to what's described in the Bible, where these depictions originate, and how we've come to understand Hell. We also talk about how we personally understand the concept of Hell, and push back on a lot of common understandings of the underworld. This week, we'll be taking a look at Heaven. What do Christians get wrong about Heaven? Turns out, a lot! The Salem Witch Trials, The Red Scare, The McMartin Preschool Trial, The War on Drugs, Netflix's Cuties...they're all vastly different events, with some based on real events, and some based on events that were completely fabricated, but they all have one thing in common: they created widespread fear and panic. This week, JP and Father Chuck take a look at the phenomenon known as "moral panic." Believe it or not, there's a formula to how a moral panic begins and spreads, and the Masters of Divinity are here to discuss that formula, how it impacts our lives and institutions, and what we can do to be more aware of a moral panic when one inevitably happens.

This week, Moderator JP, Father Chuck, and Occasional Matt are all here to talk about the Netflix sensation, COBRA KAI. Cobra Kai is a kind of spin-off/legacy sequel to the Karate Kid series of movies, mostly from the perspective of famous 80s bully Johnny Lawrence. Naturally, this is perfect fodder for the Masters of Divinity: 80s nostalgia, martial arts, stories of redemption, and so much more! They touch a little bit on their love of the Karate Kid movies, their surprise at the quality of the show's writing, and go deep into the characters and direction of the narrative. This week, in the final episode of 2020, JP and Father Chuck are here to talk about one of their favorite subjects: conspiracy theories! This time, they discuss how conspiratorial thinking can be damaging to not just the the individual, but also society, and how it can take the place of a person's spirituality. With everything happening in the news, it felt like an appropriate topic to broach.
We at Masters of Divinity recognize that it's been A Tough Year, but we hope that we were able to bring you some semblance of comfort, or provide a brief distraction. We appreciate every one of you for continuing to listen, and for all of your support. We love doing this, and we're going to be back on our game in 2021.

It's Halloween! Which means The Masters of Divinity get SPOOKY! And what better way to Get Spooky then watching a good old fashioned horror movie? Well, not THAT old fashioned. It's pretty post-modern, actually. This week, our very fearless trio sits down with Wes Craven's meta-horror slasher film, SCREAM. They touch on what the period was like when SCREAM was released, how it influenced modern day horror, and how it impacted them as teens. We mention SCREAM a lot on this podcast, we figured that this week would be a perfect time to actually give the movie its own episode. So press play, and let us know what YOUR favorite scary movie is.

Well, we've reached the end of MODAKU. Don't look so sad, you knew this was a test run baby, we wish we could go all out like we do with Music Mayhem, but that all depends on you! Let us know if you enjoyed MODAKU, and if we should tackle it against next year. But let's not get ahead of ourselves! We've got one more episode, and this week's it's Matt's turn to bring the anime goodness with WITCH HUNTER ROBIN. There were a ton of shows in the early 2000's that had a similar premise to ROBIN, but there are some elements that make this show unique. Did it work for the Masters of Divinity? Also, we get a little excited for the month of October, so bare with us as we have a small debate about SPOOKY SEASON. That play button isn't gonna press itself, kid!

In this week's edition of MODAKU, Moderator JP brings us the cyberpunk classic AKIRA! Akira was what started it all in the U.S. It's influence is felt in not only countless anime, but also in countless science fiction films and television shows. With its technical achievements in animation, its intricate storytelling, and twisted visions of body horror, AKIRA remained a cult classic for years in the U.S. among nerds and movie buffs. It wasn't before long that its influence bubbled to the surface, inspiring countless artists and filmmakers, making a lasting impact in the mainstream. This is Father Chuck and Matt's first time watching AKIRA, but JP first watched it when he was way too young to be exposed to body horror. What did they think? Press play to find out.

This week, Father Chuck brings us MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO to officially jumpstart our new series on anime, MODAKU. MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO is a timeless children's classic created by Hiyao Miyazaki, by way of the landmark animation studio Studio Giblhi. Father Chuck is very familiar with TOTORO, while JP and Matt only just recently watched it for the series alone. Check out their collected thoughts and opinions, and see if TOTORO is enough to bring JP and Matt in the fold as newborn anime nerds.

One of the goals of our podcast is to explore, observe, comment, and sometimes satirize the various spaces within the vast universe of fandom. Four years after the creation of the podcast, we finally feel that we have the strength and capacity to explore the wild world of anime. Even though anime has been a staple in Japanese culture for decades, in the United States it started as an underground, cultish fandom that only recently sprung into the American mainstream, along with various other fandoms.
Each week one of the Masters of Divinity will choose an anime title to watch, then reconvene and discuss said title in great length and detail. It's like Music Mayhem, but with schoolgirl uniforms and giant swords. This week's episode, however, serves as a primer, as JP, Father Chuck, and Matt discuss their thoughts and feelings on anime, as well as their experience with the medium. Press play to hear their thoughts, and wait until the end to hear what the first anime Masters of Divinity dedicates an entire episode to!

This week, JP and Father Chuck have themselves a little old fashioned riff-session. You remember those, right? This episode's packed with everything. There's talk about preferring art & media that's a bit more off-beat and rough around the edges, there's some reminiscing of McGee & Me, JP rants about CGI blood and demands that Hollywood action films return to using squibs...a real grab-bag of an episode, is how I would market this episode. Smash play, and prepare yourself for...stuff.

This week, JP and Father Chuck talk about an interesting corner of the internet dedicated to what's inside your pocket. It's called "EDC" which is short for everyday carry, and you'll be surprised that there are whole communities and brands revolving around the stuff we carry with us in our day-to-day. Flashlights, knives, pens, and leathermans are all part of the "EDC" uniform. But what kind of stuff do the Masters of Divinity carry? Find out by pressing play today!

DC and Warner Bros. broke new ground by giving us the first ever virtual conference (I have no facts to back that up, but you can't accuse me of shilling, because I'm admitting that I'm not sure if that's even true). We learned about Suicide Squad 2, the long-awaited Zack Snyder Cut of Justice League, and the trailer for The Batman. In this week's episode, we talk about all of those things and bask in the glow of speculative movie punditry. Remember when movies came out, guys?!
Also, you might've heard a thing or two about Jerry Falwell Jr. recently, and we talk a little about that as well.

"Adventure has a name," said one of the many taglines used to describe the character of Indiana Jones, the brainchild of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK should be considered classic cinema by now, as well as a window into an even older form of cinema, the cliffhanger serials made famous Republic Pictures that Spielberg and Lucas grew up watching. What the auteurs created when they conjured Indy was a tradition started even further back than those cliffhangers, and that's the kind of aspirational archetypal hero that daring young people dream of becoming. The kind of guy you think you're going to embody when you face a death-defying situation, or maybe when you're just trying to build the courage to ask a girl out.
As Millennials, we grew up watching the Indiana Jones Trilogy: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, THE LAST CRUSADE, and eventually, for better or worse, KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. And in this episode, we're joined by listener Mike to talk about why the character had such a deep effect on us when we watched Indy not just as kids but as adults, as well. We talk about the man behind Indiana Jones, Harrison Ford, and how he embodies the character and brings him to life. We also talk about the individual films, and how they resonate with us as works of cinema. A special thank you to Mike for suggesting this week's topic, as well as for his patronage that has very much helped our podcast. If you'd like to be like Mike, be sure to visit our Patreon. You too might be able to choose a topic, and guest-host with us as well!

In Disney • Pixar's ONWARD, elvish brothers Barley and Ian embark on a perilous journey through a fantastical realm that also happens to resemble our modern times in order to meet their father who passed away before Ian was born. Needless to say, Father Chuck and Father Fun, who themselves are dads and big fantasy nerds, have a lot to say about ONWARD. Smash that play button and listen to the Fathers talk all about what drew into ONWARD'S unique fantasy setting, the moving story, and how they relate to the characters.

You might be familiar with cyberpunk, the dystopian science fiction subgenre popularized by William Gibson's NEUROMANCER and Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER. You also might be familiar with steampunk, a science fiction subgenre known for its obsession with goggles. But have you heard of solarpunk? Solarpunk, unlike cyberpunk, is a much more optimistic view of the future, a concept that might be completely alien to anyone currently surviving 2020. This week, Father Chuck is joined by Father Fun as they talk about the little known subgenre, and what properties could constitute as solarpunk.

Well, here we are, at the end of all things -- not really, just Music Mayhem. We're sad to see it go, as Father Chuck, JP, Matt, and Father Fun have had a blast, as usual, surprising each other with albums and challenging our tastes and just enjoying some great music. You should all know by now how the Wheel of Mayhem works. We each select one "good" album and one "bad" album, we put them on a wheel, and fate decides what the last episode of Music Mayhem will be about.
We'd like to thank Father Fun for joining us on another odyssey through music, and fortunately for all of us, the Wheel of Mayhem happened to select one of his albums, which happened to be TEENAGE DREAM by Katy Perry. Unfortunately, not all of the Masters of Divinity were able to make it to this episode, and we'll have to close out the series with Father Chuck and Father Fun. But as the saying goes, start with a bang and end with a snap.

For our penultimate episode of Music Mayhem 2020, Matt chose one of the most successful albums of all time, Michael Jackson's THRILLER. THRILLER has it all: Beat It, Thriller, Billie Jean, that song with Paul McCartney, that one ballad, that other ballad, a couple of other ballads, and You Wanna Be Startin' Something, a song that has yet to come to an end. Listen, we all know why everyone picked up this album, and it was because of those three singles and their classic music videos. We definitely talk about those songs and even debate on which jacket is better: the Thriller jacket or the Beat It jacket? Trust us, it's a good one, smash that play button.

Guest Co-Host Father Fun selects Florence + The Machine's sweeping and epic sophomore album, CEREMONIALS. If you're not familiar with Florence + The Machine, the first thing you'll notice is how powerful Florence Welch's voice is. It's the kind of voice that can overshadow the rest of your group, but thankfully, in CEREMONIALS, The Machine accompanies Florence's voice with grand, sweeping instrumentals that can only be found in ancient, gigantic churches whose halls are filled with booming choirs and organs. The album is deeply symbolic, filled with visceral imagery, and is overflowing with religious and spiritual tones. So, naturally, CEREMONIALS is kind of up our alley. Press play and join JP, Father Chuck, and Father Fun as they discuss CEREMONIALS by Florence + The Machine, and stay until the end to hear Matt's selection for next week.

Father Chuck's favorite band of all-time is a little band from Boston known as Guster. Guster is known for their busker style music, their on-stage antics, and a guy who is absolutely wicked on the drums, dubbed the Thunder God. Listen to why Guster is Father Chuck's favorite band (Spoiler: It does involve a "Crow Phase"), and what the rest of the group thought of the album. There's also an aside all about why none of us are big fans of Pearl Jam, who may be a contender for the Wheel of Mayhem!

In case you haven't noticed, Music Mayhem is here, and this week your moderator JP has chosen NEVERMIND by Nirvana. NEVERMIND was one of the most successful albums of all time, with banger after banger in the first half alone. Nirvana took the world by storm with the first track on the album, Smells Like Teen Spirit, and rock music was never the same again.
This year's theme for Music Mayhem are favorite bands, and JP has been a massive fan of Nirvana and gone-to-early genius frontman Kurt Cobain. In this episode he goes into his history with coming to terms with Nirvana being his favorite band, and reveals his approach to analyzing the album. Press play to listen to JP, Father Chuck, Matt, and returning guest co-host Father Fun as they discuss Nirvana's NEVERMIND.
Also, a special shoutout to Eric from the YouTube Channel 331Erock for letting us use his face-melting cover of the Masters of The Universe theme! Be sure to check out his channel and show him so love, his music rocks!

This week, we check in on Masters of Divinity JP and Father Chuck to see how they're holding up during quarantine. Father Chuck joins us from Hawaii as he and JP talk about Covid-19, Dracula 2000, and so much more. The Dracula 2000 talk is right you're really here though, right?
Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/masters-of-divinity/message
A couple of things to keep in mind before consuming our latest episode:
1) This is not our last episode! JP just had a shower thought about how nothing ends these days, it's not a cheap ploy to trick you all into thinking this is our last episode. We're far from done here.
2) This was recorded before COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by WHO, and the disease is commented on a bit lightly at the beginning. This is our way of informing that Matt does not, in fact, have COVID-19.
There used to be a time when movies, books, and even some TV shows came to an end. The story would conclude, audiences learned lessons, and we all moved on with our lives. This still happens, of course, if you watch A24 films and HBO mini-series'. But the big leagues? No sir. The Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be designed to continue churning out stories until the heat death of the universe. Kathleen Kennedy at LucasFilm literally said that Star Wars was going to be around forever. And comics? Oh boy, I hope you're not new here...
So in this episode JP and Father Chuck talk about the value of endings, and how stories and properties and franchises that continue into perpetuity can affect society.

It's been a WHILE and a LOT has happened in the lives of our Masters of Divinity, and this week we're here to reveal some of the exciting things happening in Father Chuck's life: he's moving to Hawaii! So, I hope you're in the mood to hear about Hawaiian culture, history, and Top 5 Movies JP thinks Father Chuck should watch to prepare for the his move. And it wouldn't be Masters of Divinity if we also didn't load the episode with some Star Trek talk. The boys talk about Picard and how Trek fandom has reacted. You know how it is.

MTV, The Rise of Skywalker, Meditation, and a dash of politics...what do these things have in common? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Folks, we aren't professionals. We are a simple, slightly bearded trio of enthusiasts and artists. Sometimes we have the perfect topic for an episode. Other times, we have the intense urge to record an episode but don't have anything planned...and that's when the real magic of podcasting happens.
I'm not even sure why I'm typing this intro out for you, as I can't even really describe the thought process nor the endgame of this week's episode. It's JP. It's Father Chuck. We talk about stuff on our mind and somehow it turns into a very in-depth conversation about meditation and mindfulness. You may find that rewarding, and it is, but be warned, you'll have to listen to further discussions on Rise of Skywalker before you get there. Spoiler alert: our feelings have not changed.
Listen, just press play, and let The Masters of Divinity take control of your commute to work, your quiet time, your transatlantic flight, whatever. Let it go. Live in the moment. The prequels were good.

JP and Father Chuck are back to discuss the final chapter in the Skywalker Saga.
Folks, the new Star Wars movie is here, and we were very surprised to see that not many people had opinions or thoughts on the film. Very strange. So we decided to take on the burden of doing what no one else has the courage to do on the internet: bitch about Star Wars.

You may have seen the "Ok, Boomer" meme making the rounds on social media, but have you seen Gen Z's latest social media war on Gen X? This, to us, is an alarming development, as we all know Gen X's penchant for nihilism -- which is something we talk about in the episode! This week, Father Chuck and JP talk about perfection, a topic that the Masters of Divinity have been kicking around since the beginning of the podcast. Since the topic of perfection is so broad, and defining perfection is so difficult, you'll come to see why it took them so long to finally tackle this subject -- and tackle it they did. They talk about the perfect movie, the perfect wave, the perfect McDonalds menu item, the perfect cheeseburger according to Anthony Bourdain (this episode is probably going to make you hungry, just FYI). So, what is perfection? Who knows! Press play to see what the Masters of Divinity think.

Well, we were going to talk about the very broad and not at all controversial philosophical topic of "TRUTH" but instead we recorded an entire episode where JP expresses his love for the Kevin Williamson filmography, Father Chuck goes toe-to-toe with Martin Scorsese on defining cinema, and Matt tells it like it is about Hobbes & Shaw: A Fast and the Furious Story.
We also talk about Father Chuck's recent pilgrimage to Disney's Galaxy's Edge, VSCO girls, and make some White Claw jokes. Pretty basic stuff here, folks. We know, you missed us.

In case you haven't heard, your moderator JP is a young, single fella living as a bachelor in rural Oklahoma and has decided to give the Online Dating Scene a try. In addition there's also some fun talk about podcasting and YouTubing.
We're still working out a solid release schedule. Father Chuck and Matt are together recording and I think this is some kind of riff episode? They start talking about country music, then 90s philosophies and trends, then a lot of talk about post-modernism, malls, mall culture, the GAP gets some lip service and uh, y'know what, JP wasn't present during the recording so the very concept of moderating a discussion is played with pretty fast and loose, BUT HEY! It's still a fun time! Matt goes into depth about why he loves country music, Father Chuck finds layers of meaning in 90s mall culture, and it's just a MoD free-for-all. A MoD-off if you will. Quentin Tarantino's latest flick plays it fast and loose with history, and this inspires some discussion on revisionism and nostalgia for JP and Father Chuck. In Once Upon A Time...in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino's latest film explores 1968 Los Angeles and addresses an historical event that impacted the history of cinema, pop culture, and the counter culture. This got JP and Father Chuck thinking about our culture's obsession with nostalgia and how its manifested in our entertainment, as well as our own feelings towards our desires to change the past.

In the final installment of this year's Music Mayhem, the crew let's fate decide on which album they'll be listening to.
We wanted to end Music Mayhem with something out of the ordinary, so we came up with the Wheel of Mayhem. It's a very basic spin-wheel/wheel of fortune contest. Each of us chose two albums, one good album, one bad album, we threw the titles up on the wheel, and we gave it a spin. We want to shroud the episode in as much mystery as possible, so if you want to know what we end up listening to, you'll just have to press play! We hope everyone enjoyed this year's epic edition of Music Mayhem. We all had a blast and hope that next year will be even bigger, bolder, and mayhemm-y.

Music Mayhem is on its way out this year, so why not subject Father Chuck to NSYNC one last time?
This week, while Moderator JP is out for the week, Matt and Father Chuck dive deep into NSYNC's very last album: Celebrity.
Celebrity was a vastly different album that was created by the vocal group, as it featured songs produced and written by actual members of the group, as opposed to being mass produced like previous entries. Matt felt this would be an important distinction for NSYNC, and thought it deserved Father Chuck's attention. Will this album change Father Chuck's mind on the popular boy band? Listen to find out!

So far on Music Mayhem, when our podcasters select an album, it's an album that they normally have a personal connection with. Some of these albums we grew up with, some we discovered for the first time recently and HAVE to share with the world what we think about it, but this time around, for his episode, Moderator JP wanted to select an album he'd never heard before, from a band he'd never been a fan of.
And that's how we ended up listening to Definitely Maybe, the debut album of britpop legends Oasis. JP only had a few short weeks to not just listen to and deeply analyze the album, but to also become somewhat of an Oasis pro, since the group as a whole is not terribly familiar with the band.
So we hope you enjoy this episode, as we all try our best to appreciate and take a close examination of what's considered to be one of the greatest British rock albums of all time, and we hope you'll take the journey with us and have a listen to Definitely Maybe by Oasis.

In 2002, two of the most successful and distinct bands came together to form one of the best rock bands of the 2000s. JP, Matt and Amy are here to talk about it.
Last week, Amy selected Audioslave's self-titled debut album for Music Mayhem. Audioslave has the distinction of being one of the few supergroups to find massive success with audiences, combining the talents of Rage Against the Machine and Soundgarden. Those these bands are drastically distinct in sound, their formation created and unmistakably awesome sound reminiscent of the traditional classic rock of the 70s, being compared to such groups as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
It's difficult to talk about Audioslave and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell without acknowledging the darker aspects of his work, as well as his tragic death. As a result the episode gets a little heavy, bringing up topics of depression and suicide, and how we deal with it using music and art.

Way back in the late '90s, boy bands were all the rage. Countless indistinguishable boy pop groups sprung up throughout the music industry attempting to cash in on the fad. But there was only one group that would stand out by trying to strike out on their own terms...
This week, Matt selected *NSYNC's second studio album, "No Strings Attached" for this year's edition of Music Mayhem. The reaction to the announcement was...mixed. Matt and JP were delighted, of course, but Father Chuck...? Well, you watched his reaction videos, didn't you?
The gang is also once again joined by our newest addition to the Master of Divinity family, Amy. With a background in music, a freelance performer, and someone who grew up with an obsessed *NSYNC fan for a sister, Amy has a unique perspective on the massively popular boy band.
So, how does the album hold up? Is there a deep meaning to the lyrics? Is it a well-crafted piece of music from a group of talented vocal artists, or a product mass-produced by a hit factory (based in Sweden, oy)? Find out today, and hit play on either SoundCloud or YouTube.

In 1998, The Beastie Boys released their fifth album, "Hello Nasty" and it was unlike any album they had ever released.
"Hello Nasty" was released during pretty formative years for both JP and Father Chuck, and as a result, the music videos, the hit singles, and the deep cuts inspired them deeply, not just upon release, but in later years as well. The album is as irreverent, erratic, and as dense as any other Beastie Boys album, but the injection of spiritual, social and political consciousness takes the album to a completely different level. Matt, unfortunately, couldn't make it, but stay to the end for his announcement of next week's album!

After a decade of movies, what Marvel has deemed "The Infinity Saga" has come to an end with Avengers: Endgame. And we saw it. And we have thoughts.
Last week we talked about the decade of Marvel movies. This week, we discuss the movie that rounds out the entire franchise, Avengers: Endgame. The movie has garnered over a billion dollars at the box office, and is proving to be a hit with critics and audiences. So, what did The Masters of Divinity think? We discuss the film's most emotional moments, our favorite performances, and whether or not the movie stuck the landing and paid off 10 years and 22 movies. Listen to the episode, and let us know what you thought of the movie!

This week, with Father Chuck in the moderator's seat, it's all about God & Gucci, as MoD talks about super fresh ye'vangelicals.
You've heard us talk about Hypepriests in the past. Well, to this day we're still pretty fascinated by this new blend of Millennial trends and evangelicalism taking the younger circles of places like New York and LA by storm. Usual moderator JP is considered to be within the target demographic of these types of churches, and Father Chuck grills JP on his thoughts on the new wave of ferociously fab evangelicalism, and whether or not he would join one of their churches.

We're back!
In this episode, The Masters of Divinity are joined by Michael, a long-time listener of the podcast who also happens to be MoD contributor Father Fun's better half. Michael joins our trio of Masters to discuss the topic of just who exactly stories belong to. Is it the author? The audience? The corporate pigs responsible for the degradation of culture for the sake of exponential financial growth? There is also a lot of discussion on the post-structuralist philosophy of Death of the Author, and how that could apply to scripture, the kind of stuff they talk about in Sunday School, really. And while we're on the subject of Death of the Author, our lawyers have advised us to make it known that we do not support the murder or maiming of any author.
Well, maybe Orson Scott Card.
Or that guy who created Dilbert.
Remember Dilbert?
Enjoy the episode!

JP and Father Chuck reflect on the groundbreaking sci-fi action film that completely changed the landscape of cinema. It's been 20 years, does it still hold up?
Of course it holds up, THE MATRIX rules!
JP and Chuck talk about what it was like during peak THE MATRIX hype back in 1999, and the experience of watching it for the first time on the big screen back then as a young moviegoer. They also do their best to parse out the layers of meta-narrative that completely encompass the film, something that film critics, philosophers and countless other academics, scientists and engineers have been trying to accomplish for years.

JP, Matt and Father Chuck discuss THE FUTURE.
Did you ever think about what the future would be like when you were a kid? Did you fantasize about hoverboards and flying DeLoreans, or were you too preoccupied with the thousands of supermodels and/or athletes you'd be dating? How do you feel about the future now that you're a bit older and a bit wiser? These are the questions we ask on this week's episode, and while we talk a lot about our collective fascination with technology, we certainly don't leave out our general outlook on the whole of humanity. As you do.

Much like BLACK PANTHER and THOR: RAGNAROK, CAPTAIN MARVEL is presented as another milestone in Marvel Studios' ouvre, this time for centering a female lead (their first one in the studios' 10 year existence). BLACK PANTHER was met with astounding success, both with audiences and critically, earning itself a Best Picture nomination at the 91st Academy Awards, a milestone for a superhero film that featured an all-black cast and made by a mostly black crew. THOR: RAGNAROK wasn't nominated for Best Picture, but it was met with a ton of acclaim and is considered a favorite amongst Marvel fans, and was considered a milestone for being directed by Taika Waititi, a New Zealander of native descent. So, does CAPTAIN MARVEL live up to its milestone status? Matt and JP have some thoughts.

JP, Father Chuck and Jump To Conclusions Matt discuss the 1999 cult comedy classic, Mike Judge's "Office Space."
The Mike Judge film was released theatrically 20 years ago to very little acclaim, but happened to cement its place in pop culture when it was later released on VHS and DVD by charming audiences with its hilariously mundane characters and painfully relatable workplace setting. Some of us grew up loving this film, before we even had jobs, and now that some of us have been through the ringer that is the corporate world, we have a whole new perspective on what Mike Judge was telling us. This isn't like the Avatar episode. We all pretty much agree that Office Space is hilarious and great, and anyone who's ever been passive aggressively told to come in on the weekend should watch it.

In a recent study conducted by the Barna Group, 47% of Christian Millennials think it's wrong to share their faith. We were skeptical. Do Christian Millennials really want to avoid sharing their faith, and expressing their beliefs? Or is the idea of evangelism going through a period of redefinition?
If you grew up in the church, the act of evangelizing probably paid a significant role in your faith. After all, in the Bible, Jesus does command his disciples to go out unto the world and spread His message, a la the Great Commission. But what exactly does that mean? Does it mean we should be standing on the street corners shouting through a megaphone? Is evangelizing approaching strangers on the street to simply talk about Jesus? Is the wordless book and pre-prepared spiels effective tools in introducing someone to a brand new faith? We recount our own experiences in evangelism and discuss how we personally feel about evangelizing, and offer many thoughts on the study that was conducted by Barna (spoiler alert: we do not agree).

This week: JP, Father Chuck and Matt are joined by Amy once again, to talk about pursuing your dreams and just how daunting that can be these days.
What stops people from following their passions? What risks are involved in pursuing ones dreams? You were probably told when you were a kid that pursing your heart's desire is the most important thing you can do, but something happened along the way, didn't it? Unless of course you're one of the lucky ones who is living the dream (this episode probably isn't for you). This week's episode is all about what it takes to follow the things that makes us come alive and sparks our interests, and how the journey after that is not always what it's cracked up to be.

It's been 10 years since the release of AVATAR, and we've taken it upon ourselves to take a closer look at James Cameron's grand opus. AVATAR was released to wide acclaim and massive financial success, becoming the 5th most successful film of all time, and earning numerous Oscar nominations (and two wins!). And yet today it's not nearly as celebrated as Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, which is the opposite of what everybody expected to happen. After watching the film, all three Masters came away with three VERY different opinions: Father Chuck is a massive fan, Matt strongly dislikes it, and JP thinks it's fine.
JP attempts to rewrite scenes and flesh out characters while also pitching ideas for Avatar 2: It Was The Abyss All Along. This and more on MASTERS OF DIVINITY.

Back in the 90s, after it's newfound success with X-Files and the continued success with Star Trek, 20th Century Fox wanted another sci-fi hit on television. Enter Sliders, a show about an unlikely group of people "sliding" from dimension to the next, discovering countless alternate realities with endless possibilities.
As you all know JP has had a fascination with the series since its inception and well after its untimely cancelation. While the series' premise was fascinating and should have spawned a brilliant hour of television, it never quite landed it.
It's nearly 20 years later since the show was cancelled, and Matt & JP watched the original pilot episode from the 90s...does the show hold up? Is Jerry O'Connell doing all the heavy lifting? Listen to the episode to find out!

Two years later, and JP finally decides to revisit it to give it another shot. The results? You'll just have to listen. The trio talks about their favorite scenes, how the movie became a pop culture sensation, how it's celebrated as a holiday classic, and a little bit of insight on some behind-the-scenes action. Hey...remember when everyone "stopped dating" and tried out "courtship?"
Joshua Harris, the author of the infamous book "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" made a public statement on his website apologizing and seemingly owning up to the mistakes he made with his book. Harris's book was released 20 years ago, and since then it has come under a massive barrage of scrutiny, especially after many relationships modeled after the ideals espoused in the book have come undone.

In a special spooky edition of The Masters of Divinity, Father Chuck, Matt and your moderator JP all watched the Christploitation rapture classic, A THIEF IN THE NIGHT. If you were raised in a Christian home in America, you're probably very familiar with the Kirk Cameron classic, LEFT BEHIND, a film that's an adaptation of the popular book series about a band of characters left on Earth after the rapture, and must endure hellish apocalyptic events, including the reign of the anti-christ. What you probably didn't know is that in 1972, a B-movie director with $60,000.00 and a scrappy crew and a band of no-name actors in Des Moines, Iowa DID IT FIRST.
We've mentioned this movie multiple times throughout the run of this podcast, and we finally all decided that we would revisit the film and dedicate an entire episode to it. It's finally here, just in time for Halloween: our review and discussion of A THIEF IN THE NIGHT.

You've heard the saying, "The 80s was the best time to be a kid," well, we regret to inform you that we've discovered why, and it's actually kind of sad and scary. JP and Father Chuck learn about how in the 80s Ronald Reagan used the FCC to lift regulations on advertising toward children via children's programming, and how that may have had a hand in shaping the attitudes of Generation X, Millennials, and more generations to come. They also go in-depth on how shows and toys like Transformers and He-Man were conceived, and reveal that they can't quite wrap the heads around the series and toy line M.A.S.K., which is just bad.

JP and Father Chuck discuss the phenomenon of parasocial relationships, and how potent they have become since the advent of the internet personality. Father Chuck tries extremely hard, with much difficulty, to identify with those who find themselves in a parasocial relationship, while JP fully admits that, yeah, he's totally in more than a few. We also learn the tragic tale of the Parasocial Penguin, Grape-kun, and a brief rundown on our fascination with the Milkshake Duck (the duck is racist, sorry). If you'd like to pursue a parasocial relationship with The Masters of Divinity, listening to all of our episodes and becoming a patron on our Patreon is a great place to start! https://www.patreon.com/MastersOfDivinity

JP and Father Chuck are back again to talk about THANOS, from the hit summer blockbuster and latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War. The discussion is mostly focused on Thanos and whether or not he works as a character and a protagonist. There's also some lovely chatting on emotional labor, brief mention of parasocial relationships, and JP's harrowing tale of being stung by a yellowjacket wasp. It hurt, guys.

Gondor calls for aid! But Rohan doesn't answer...
Father Chuck and Father Fun have a nice chat about rewatching the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even dip their toes into some Star Trek related talk. Listen, if you're a fan of Thor: The Dark World, you better turn away right now, it gets absolutely zero love in this episode, and goes completely undervalued. Also, both Fathers mention Iron Man 2 and how it might be somewhat underrated, but completely fail to mention that JP was in that movie. I mean, you can't see him or anything, but he can totally point out a scene where he's present, but there's a giant CGI robot taking up about 3/4ths of the screen, so you can't see him. But he's totally there, I swear!
Anyway enjoy the episode and complete lack of mentioning black hole grenades in Thor: The Dark World.

100 EPISODES!!!!!
We did it, Internet! We made it to 100 and we're still friends! You've probably wondering since we hit Episode 90 just what exactly the Masters of Divinity have in store for their 100th episode. A a star-studded look back at our most memorable moments? An airing of Grievances? A musical?! None of those! We spend a good portion reflecting on our journey as Masters of Divinity and how much it's meant to us, referring to our favorite episodes and moments. And then we talk about Black Sabbath's heavy metal staple, WAR PIGS. It probably seems random and out of left field, but trust us, it works, and it rocks. So throw up those horns, and keep it one hundred today, it's our 100TH EPISODE OF MASTERS OF DIVINITY!!!

Our trio of Divine Masters return to discuss the rise and popularity of the prosperity gospel, and the tastemakers aka "hypepriests" who are making super kewl, you guys. We talk about the origins of prosperity gospel, the Catholic church's thoughts, tithing, and so much more that it would be a shame to give it all away in this little description box. Do people even read this thing? I've been typing in here for years and no one has ever mentioned it. I'm starting to think that I'm all by myself in the description box. Talking to myself. Well I'm not going to stay here any longer. I want to be free!

THIS WEEK...
JP, Matt and Father Chuck are back with a riff-tastic episode, and this time with special guest Amy, Matt's cousin! We spend a few minutes talking about the Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot that was recently announced, a parody of Jaws that Matt found on Amazon Prime, and of course we get acquainted with our special guest, as Amy inspires us all to take a deep dive into spirituality. It's a fascinating episode and we loved having Amy on. You'll have to listen for more! And is that so bad? Honestly.

Whoa, have we got a doozy of an episode for you, MoD Squad. In our final installment of this year's Music Mayhem, JP has brought us The Colour and the Shape, Foo Fighters' second album that featured such timeless alt. rock hits like Monkey Wrench, My Hero and Everlong. JP has been in love with the album for quite some time and Matt has a fondness for Foo Fighters...but when Father Chuck and Guest Moderator Father Fun listen to the album, they're not as impressed. Mutiny! Civil war! A house divided! Listen to the epic conclusion of Music Mayhem which clocks in at [checks notes]..an hour and fifty-five minutes. Surely, no conclusions are nearly as epic as ours!

Father Fun is back, baby! And he's brought us a big, juicy piece of music for us to dig our fangs into - the smash broadway hit HAMILTON, by Lin-Manuel Miranda. We know that this is a pretty unconventional choice as it's not technically an album, but we've decided that in an attempt to not homogenize Music Mayhem, we want to use the month to explore as much of the landscape of music as possible -- so what better way to do that than to listen to a hit musical play?
Hamilton is a pop culture phenomenon. The first of it's kind, Hamilton presents a multi-culticultural hip-hop narrative about the life of Alexander Hamilton, and the foundation of the United States of America. Examining a musical on a platform like Music Mayhem was a fun and new experience for us, as Father Chuck and JP had never actually seen the play or listened to the soundtrack in its entirety, unlike Father Fun who prides himself on being a true Hamilton fan. It's an episode for newbs and fans alike!
Listen the soundtrack as soon as possible, or if you're not convinced, listen to the episode and find out how a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished, in squalor grow up to be a hero and a scholar.

Oh boy. This installment of Music Mayhem is unprecedented, as Matt brings us Supernatural by DC Talk. Why so unprecedented? Is it because it's the first CCM album we've discussed? Or is it because it's...not...great? You could say both!
DC Talk's Supernatural was the follow-up to Jesus Freak, which was the band's most acclaimed and most remembered album. Even though Supernatural found a lot of success financially, the album didn't produce anything particularly special or memorable. This didn't stop a young Matt Wells from purchasing it as his first ever album though! Find out why exactly Matt chose such a bewildering follow-up, in the second installment of Music MAY-hem!

THIS WEEK...The Masters of Divinity have returned!
JP and Moderator Father Charles recount what it was like to grow up in sheltered households while watching TV that served as a window into the evil outside WOOORRRLLLDDD. Don't get us wrong, we weren't raised in compounds in Waco or anything, but the evangelical church did do their fair share of media-shunning that lead to a lot of blocked channels and clandestine viewings of Beavis & Butthead. But despite everything, we turned out pretty good! We talk about how media can effect one's worldview, and whether or not restrictions and limitations created a deeper appreciation for the arts. We forgot to plan a Thanksgiving episode (whoops!), and after JP, Matt, and Father Chuck wrapped up an episode (which will go live next week), JP and Father Chuck suddenly started to geek out over Star Trek. They went so long that it warranted an actual episode! And thus, a new tradition was born: TREKSGIVING.
Because Star Trek has once again made its way into the public consciousness thanks to Stark Trek Discovery and The Orville, JP decided to go on a massive Star Trek: The Next Generation binge. SO JP reveals his feelings on the first season of Star Trek so far, his first impressions after watching the best episodes from each Star Trek series, and they also talk at length about Seth McFarlane's wonderful homage to Star Trek, The Orville. There's also some talk about prequels and how we're sick to death of them. Listen up! And when you're done, replicate some turkey, binge some Star Trek, and give Planes, Trains, and Automobiles a shot!

Hiatus, shmiatus! JP The Moderator is here!
This week the gang reflects on the interesting week Disney is having, what with banning LA Times reporters from official screenings of Thor: Ragnarok, and beginning the early phase of taking over the world by announcing their talks to buy 20th Century Fox. We're Disney fans here at Masters of Divinity, and one thing we've never addressed are some of the shady aspects of how Disney conducts itself as a major conglomerate. Whether it's ripping off the local government, straight up lowballing for land, or revising history, Disney is not always the most ethical mega corporation. We talk about boycotting as a tool and when it's necessary, and how effective it can be to bring about change.

Happy Halloween! JP and Father Chuck are here for a special Halloween edition of Christian Curiosities. As some of you may know, we have a fascination with some of the more odd, mystifying aspects of the Christian subculture, especially those that have come out of the modern evangelical movement.
Today on All Hallow's Eve, If you look hard enough in every city and town in America, you'll find that someone, somewhere has constructed a haunted house to scare the bejeezus out kids with rubber bats and spiders, styrofoam tombstones and disorienting strobe lights, probably accompanied by cassette tape filled with spooky sound effects. But if you look just a little harder, a local church may be offering an alternative to those harmless haunted houses. Some are called Judgement Houses, or Hell Houses, depending on where you go. This week, JP and Father Chuck dive deep into just what exactly a Judgement House is, and try to figure out why in the world these are necessary. Is it to cash-in on the holiday festivities? An effective tool to scare people into converting to Christianity? Or is it just good old fashioned, harmless, Halloween fun? Spoiler alert: it is not the latter.

JP and Father Chuck talk about "fan ownership" and the nature of entitlement that is inherent in fandom. From demanding that certain characters are forced to have a romantic relationship, to insisting that certain head canon is official canon. Where does one draw the line? We talk about the fun that can be found in critical analysis, theories, and individual interpretation as it relates to the "death of the author" theory. It's a fun episode where JP and Father Chuck let loose on a couple of their own ideas in certain fandoms and films.

First and foremost, we are deeply saddened by the events that took place in Las Vegas on October 1st. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and we continue to keep those affected by this tragedy in our prayers.
This week, JP and Matt are joined by Amanda Young, a colleague of JP's from their film school days! Amanda just wrapped her first short film, LOVE, GWEN, a deeply personal crime-thriller that was written and directed by her in order to attend the American Film Institute's Women's Directing Workshop. The project began to take a life of its own however, and became something more than an application, and became an astonishingly moving debut.
Amanda tells us her story, how she became a filmmaker, the origins behind LOVE, GWEN, her personal connection to the characters and events in the film, and the subject matter of addiction and co-dependency.

This is one of those episodes where we talk about weird Christian ephemera, whether it be a book about how a prayer can grant you anything you want, a harmless bracelet with roots in social justice, or an emblem on a car that became the most recognizable modern day Christian symbol that isn't a cross. This episode is of course about the latter, as JP and Father Chuck discuss the history of the Ichthys, or as what some refer to as the "Jesus Fish." The symbol does have a pretty rich history, and it may just blow your mind where it exactly came from.

In American society the idea of a hero is pretty much the ultimate ideal a human being can achieve. But what does that mean, exactly? Does anyone truly personify the idea of being a hero, or is being a hero acting on heroic moments that happen upon us? The Masters of Divinity discuss heroism and what exactly it means to be a hero, and even get into some philosophical/theological musing on nothingness. It ties in. I think. Also, Father Chuck is none-too-happy about DC's dual Joker films coming down the pipeline.

In this edition of Masters of Divinity, JP and Father Chuck spew their triggered SJW liberal snowflake propaganda about why Nazi's and white supremacy is bad. We get it. It's a low bar. We wondered why we should even address something as obvious as "don't be a white supremacist," and yet, here we are. They address the many issues and concerns surrounding the Charlottesville incident and attempt to get to the root of the kind of hatred that spawns white supremacy.

Steven Spielberg is responsible for many things. A fantastic output of films for all ages in the 80s, a resurgence in optimism and hope in cinema, traumatizing Matt Wells so that he'll never step foot in to the ocean, and of course Poltergeist. We wrap up our creator series with a creator who needs no introduction: Steven Spielberg. JP talks about Steven Spielberg's most personal film, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, his overall influence and cinema and why he is a truly legendary creator. The gang reflect on some of their favorite Spielberg movies and the most iconic moments from some of those movies, and of course Chuck wraps up his Avatar saga.

In the second part of our snazzy title-less creator series, Father Chuck submits Shigeru Miyamoto as the focus of discussion. You may not know his name, but you probably know his work like the back of your hand. Miyamoto created three of the most iconic video games of all time: Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and The Legend of Zelda. His work is also tied into the creation and evolution of Nintendo. Basically, he's a huge deal, and if you're not acquainted with the man behind the games, you will be after listening to this episode! Also, Father Chuck gives us another update on his continued spiral into Avatar fandom.

Rob Bell is a controversial figure in the realm of modern day Christianity, but the Masters of Divinity are huge fans (it should go without saying, we had him on the show!). However, there is no bigger Rob Bell fan than our very own Matt Wells. This week in the first part of our series on our favorite creators, Matt tells us why Rob Bell's work is so important to him and how it influenced his own spiritual journey (and continues to, to this day). Also, Father Chuck reveals that prior to recording the episode he became an Avatar fan while visiting Disney World. Yeah. You gotta hear it to believe it.

In preparation for an upcoming series about creativity and favorite creators, the Masters of Divinity discuss the fundamentals of creation. What is creation? Why do humans need to be creative? There's also some mention of Dan Harmon, Bob Ross and Joseph Campbell, influential creators in their own right and how they inspire deep, provocative meditations on the act of creating. Plus, we talk about some nerdy Star Wars stuff and our reactions to Spider-Man: Homecoming!

This week, after catching up on 4th of July shenanigans, Father Chuck and JP sit down to discuss the topic of forgiveness. How does one purely forgive someone? What is expected of you once you are forgiven? Has our society lost the concept of forgiveness as evident by many an Internet fiasco? They also start the episode with a brand new segment, where JP and Father Chuck discuss what they've been watching and reading, or in JP's case, what he's being missing out on.

In another edition of Masters of Divinity, our trio unites to share their thoughts and experiences on what they've been watching, reading, and thinking. JP has a bone to pick with The Mummy (the title of this episode is supposed to be ironic) and the studios making big blockbuster tentpoles, Father Chuck has been challenging himself by reading a book by Rod Dreher, and Matt thinks it's a good idea to read Stephen King's IT before falling asleep every night. Listen to the riff-tastic episode, and for God's sake, don't see The Mummy!

As you all know by now, The Masters of Divinity love to dive in and explore "Christian curiosities," whether it's the Prayer of Jabez, the Satanic Panic, or even small movements in music-driven culture such as Christian Punk, we're there, we're talking about it, and we love it. This week we talk about Christian Punk and how Father Chuck was a pretty active member of the scene back in the day. This of course leads to attempting to define punk, asking ourselves and Christianity and punk rock truly belong together, and we even dabble a little bit in metal. This may seem like a lost Music MAY-hem episode at first, but trust us, it's not, it's just a couple of dudes talking about punk, and why it works in Christianity (or doesn't. whatever. do what you want.)

Wonder Woman has taken the world by storm and has become a phenomenon, so of course ya boys JP, Father Chuck and Matt are gonna talk about it. Turns out, they loved it too. It was a perfect superhero movie, but the Masters of Divinity are also pretty over the moon that WB/DC were actually able to deliver a good movie for once, and to prove we aren't a bunch of Marvel shills, we talk about why it worked, and why we're hopeful for the future of DC's cinematic universe.

This week, JP and Father Chuck address the representation of Christians in films and television. Christians don't often find characters in media that represent what they believe or their lifestyle, and sometimes they're often portrayed in a negative or a less empathetic light. But JP and Father Chuck have discovered plenty of characters who represent Christians positively, and have found that as entertainment evolves, religion is being used to create more nuanced characters.

Keeping with the theme of the month, and also in the spirit of mixing things up, JP, Father Chuck, and Matt talk about this month's cinematic treasure, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. Chuck finds interesting gnostic parallels in the relationship between Ego the Living Planet and Chris Pratt's character Peter Quill. They talk about their favorite musical numbers in the movie, their favorite relationships and character moments, and go all in on analyzing and critique the important themes and supposed metaphors the movies espouses. In this short but sweet episode, Father Chuck and JP discuss Paul Simon's "Graceland," that album Father Chuck chose for this latest installment of Music MAY-hem. JP had to go outside his wheelhouse for this one as this wasn't punk or alternative or New Wave, but luckily he was very much rewarded for his faith in Paul Simon. They talk about the history of the album, the impact it had on Paul Simon's career, its hand in possibly ending apartheid in South Africa, and of course revealing to the world that is the incredible vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. "Graceland" is a fascinating story and even more fascinating album with its poetic lyrics and beautiful addition of Ladysmith's music. You Millennials may THINK you won't get anything from it, but trust us, you'll love it, just like you'll love this episode!

Chuck gives us an in-depth history of the album, Matt tells us why the album is his favorite Beatles album, and why it's so important, and JP (a Beatles neophyte) talks about his first impressions on the album. In our first episode of Music MAY-hem, JP chats individually with Father Chuck and Matt about Green Day's most successful album, "Dookie." JP and Chuck share their history with the album, and Matt reveals that the album has made him realize how much he misses punk music. There's a lot of discussion about the lyrics of some of the most popular songs on the album (Basket Case, Longview, When I Come Around, Welcome To Paradise) as well as some not-so-popular songs. It's a great first installment of this month's series, and stay tuned until the end where Matt selects the album for next week's episode so you can listen along!

They talk about draw fantasy has toward Christian authors, why some fundamental Christians are so against fantasy, and their own history with the genre. One of the cool things about being The Masters of Divinity is that our very own Fr. Chuck is a working priest in the Episcopal Church. And so we decided that we'd take a week off and let him do the heavy-lift— I mean, give you all the opportunity to hear him preach his Easter sermon. So if you've ever wanted to hear the proclamation of our Risen Lord preached alongside references to Moses, Mad Max: Fury Road, and the 1986 Disney Classic, Flight of the Navigator, then boy-howdy do we have the sermon for you!
Please enjoy this little diversion and remember to like and subscribe and share and all that good stuff. It's basically the same thing as evangelism, right? It's gotta count for something.

In this episode, JP, Father Chuck, and Silent Matt talk about demons. Father Chuck takes JP to school with his knowledge on the origin of demons and the true nature of the demonic, while dispelling myths and common misconceptions. We’ve got biblical demons, personal demons, pop culture demons, and Frank Peretti demons - we cover the whole gamut of mankind’s understanding of demons. And in true Masters of Divinity, it is handled with reverence and finesse. Kinda.

It's episode 54, and the gang is once again reunited, this time to take on the infamous Bible code! Do you remember the Bible Code? Apparently there are secret messages hidden in the Bible that predict events in the future, and one brave soul discovered a code to find these messages...that doesn't really gel with our Masters of Divinity, and they dive deep into the history of the fad as well as the methods used. Shocker: it gets weird.

In this week's episode, Matt Wells is joined by Father Chuck and JP as they dive head-first into the history of the WWJD brand. You might remember it as an innocuous brand used to sell bracelets and guilt teenagers out of making out or seeing Rated R movies. What the majority of people don't realize is that the phrase "What Would Jesus Do?" is deeply rooted in the Social Gospel movement, and was coined by Charles Sheldon, a minister from the 1800's. We talk about Charles Sheldon and his message, Janie Tinklenberg and her fight to get the "WWJD" brand trademarked in order to save it from being over-commercialized, and we also ask ourselves what does the phrase "What Would Jesus Do?" mean to us? If you have no knowledge of the WWJD phrase beyond the bracelets and have always been curious about just what it means and where it comes from, this episode is for you! And just as a bonus, MATT WELLS IS HERE!!!!

Great Scott! Matt was pulled from his temporal loop and found himself in our reality once again. While he was away he was very frustrated that JP and Father Chuck were talking about time travel without him, so they decided to talk about time travel again! In this tangent universe, JP, Father Chuck and Matt talk about time travel, their favorite time travel films, methods of time travel, parallel universes, and share their own time travel theories and fantasies. What would you do if you could travel back in time? If time travel were possible and widely available, would The Crucifixion be like Woodstock? Find out this week on Masters of Divinity!

Great Scott! Father Chuck and JP are here to bring you our first ever episode (out of infinite other probable episodes occurring simultaneously on parallel dimensions)about time travel! We geek out over time travel in movies, going over our favorite "rules" from movies like Back to The Future and The Terminator, Donnie Darko and even The Last Temptation of Christ. And how can you have a full on nerdy conversation about time travel without mentioning the concept of parallel worlds? That, true believers, is when JP is finally let loose to get nerdy about the greatest sci-fi drama of the 90s, SLIDERS. We also talk about time travel and theology. Is there a parallel world where Jesus didn't die on the cross? Is the crucifixion a "fixed point" in time? Also some thoughts on pre-destination and how that relates to the infinite earths theory. Unfortunately Matt couldn't make it, as he found himself unstuck in temporal flux between realities. Oops.

Welcome back, MoD Squad! JP, Father Chuck and Matt are back again to discuss the evangelical “literary” phenomenon “The Prayer of Jabez: Breaking Through to the Blessed Life.” If you hung out in the evangelical community in the early 2000s, it’s a good chance that your church was blitzed by Bruce Wilkinson’s 80-page international bestseller. The Masters of Divinity certainly were, and since Christian subculture phenomenons are kind of our thing, we just had to talk about the book, its impact, and the bizarre story about the author’s African dream. Listen to this one all the way through. It gets weird.

There is also talk of the great animated shows that are airing today that deserve attention, and are exploring themes and ideas in a way that can't be explored in other mediums. In this next installment of the Matt is Missing Saga (we're praying it turns out better than the Clone Saga), JP and Father Chuck get nostalgic over growing up in the 90s as comic book nerds (the 90s were The Dark Age of Comics. It was pretty traumatizing), discuss the rocky history of the church's relationship with the comic book industry, geek out over their favorite comics and heroes, and discuss two graphic novels that they're currently reading: Blankets by Craig Thompson, and Kingdom Come by Mark Waid & Alex Ross.

JP, Father Chuck and Matt band together with reoccurring co-hosts Father Fun and Keelan to usher the end of 2016! The gang compiles their favorite movies of the year, reflect on TV shows that they discovered, and look back on some of their most memorable experiences on the podcast. They also acknowledge with heavy hearts the passing of Carrie Fisher. It was a rough year, but we made it. We enjoyed our podcast's first year of existence, and we thank all of you for listening. See you in 2017!

JP, Matt and Father Chuck went out and saw ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, and loved it so much that there was no way they weren't going to dedicate an entire episode to it. As a Christmas treat to all of our nerdy listeners, we review the first standalone Star Wars film, and with great glee. We absolutely loved Rogue One, and we talk about our favorite characters and moments, THAT SCENE, and what we would like to see in other standalone "Star Wars Stories." Enjoy the episode and remember, the Force is with you, and you are one with The Force.

In this episode, JP and Father Chuck are joined once again by Keelan as they discuss World's Greatest Mom, The Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Chuck reveals his latest feelings and experience in understanding of Mary, and the gang talk about her influence in Christianity as well as in pop culture. JP is just hours away from seeing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story so, of course, the conversation dips into Star Wars territory pretty quick. And of course, Shmi Skywalker. We talk a lot about Shmi Skywalker.

The guys discuss their favorite Christmas movies, which Beatle had the better Christmas song, favorite Christmas memories, JP's hatred toward A Christmas Story, how Star Wars is becoming a new Christmas tradition, and a very illuminating history lesson on the Christmas holiday and the origins of Santa Claus. And would it be Christmas without Last Christmas by Wham!? We think not!

They also get into unforgettable tangents about tea, rare sodas, JP's struggle with The Simpsons 600 marathon, and what they would do if either of them were suddenly blessed with religions brain tumor powers. In this week's episode, JP, Father Chuck and future Officer Matt discuss the importance of communication and language in today's society. The gang is a little dismayed by how communication has broken down in recent years and how it has surely caused the division we are currently experiencing in our country. They also talk about the impact words can have on one's life, and how we better communication and use of language can bring humanity together.

JP, Father Chuck & Matt share their unique experiences during the days following the election, and come to the same conclusion about the importance of empathy, unity and peace. Can we achieve these things? We sure as hell try in this episode.

In this week's episode, JP and Father Chuck rock the vote in Matt's absence. Have you voted yet? YOU SHOULD. In our first truly political episode, JP and Father Chuck discuss the importance of voting, the roles that Christians play and ought to play in the landscape of politics, and try very hard not to enrage Trump supporters. Listen, we aren't a partisan podcast, we mostly want to be a place that you can escape to from the madness of the world, but voting is important and shouldn't be ignored or escaped from, especially if you're an American citizen, and that's what this episode is ultimately about. It's also about that time JP dressed up as George Lucas and ordered guacamole at Chipotle.

In this episode, the Masters of Divinity face the morbid reality of death in the lightest way possible! Whether we like it or not, death is a part of life, and there was a time when Halloween was a time to reconcile the notion of death as well as remember and honor the memories of those we loved who have passed on from this mortal coil. In this episode we talk about how we would like Halloween to be associated with this idea once more, our beliefs about the afterlife, and the movie Cocoon and how it ties in to JP's fear of death.

Father Chuck is back y'all, and he comes baring gifts from one of our listeners (his mom) and chimes in on some of our Matrix talk from last week. Also, the Pumpkin Spice continues to flow in our second episode in our Halloween series where the guys talk about fear. Fear is an essential part of Halloween and its religious origins, and we explore how fear is a fun aspect of the holiday. We also talk about phobias and existential fears that plague us, and the pitfalls of living in fear. We're also all in agreement: the first Final Destination is the best, and it still scares us.

Matt and JP discuss story structure and how it applies to reality and our lives, drawing a lot from The Matrix and Scream. Father Chuck is absent for this episode, so they didn't get into whether we're actually living in a simulation or not (sorry Chuck fans). Pour yourself a Pumpkin Spice latte and enjoy the first episode of October!

Another riff-tastic episode of Masters of Divinity. The guys take time to reflect on the past month and the various topics they covered, especially the previous episode where co-hosts Chuck and Matt were replaced by their wives Cainna and Heather. We also followup a little on the topic of anxiety. They also talk about Tolkien and Middle Earth, C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, Matt's obsession with murder mystery fiction and Chuck confronts his own mortality by confronting death. It's an episode with three friends hanging out, and you're invited to hang out with us and listen to The Shaggs!

This week, JP is caught completely off-guard as his co-hosts -- Father Chuck and Matt -- are replaced by their wives, Cainna Browning and Heather Wells! Sabotage! As you all know by now, this month each co-host will be individually choosing a topic to discuss, and this week Matt chose anxiety, and what better way to illustrate anxiety then to completely blindside your podcast's moderator with special surprise guests co-hosts! In a truly special episode JP, Cainna and Heather speak candidly about their own personal experiences with anxiety and offer some advice on how to endure it. Cainna also talks about minimalism and how it has helped her deal with anxiety. And what would a special episode featuring the wives of the co-hosts be if there wasn't talk about how they met their husbands? That of course means there is a lot of talk about relationships, parenting and of course the anxieties that come with each. You don't want to miss this very special episode featuring the Ladies of Divinity!

It's our 30th episode, and we celebrate that milestone by talking about failure! We're in our second week of "Theme Roulette" where each of the Masters of Divinity choose a specific topic for the group to talk about. This week, JP watched Elizabethtown for some reason and it inspired him to address the topic of failure. From embracing failure to learning from it, there's a multitude of ways one can benefit from hitting rock bottom. JK Rowling gave a commencement speech to Harvard's graduating class of 2008, and she stressed the importance of failure to a bunch of kids who have probably never experienced it. Stephen Colbert was interviewed by GQ and he talked about how he "learned to love the bomb." We talk about these two quite about, and we figure out how to solve everybody's problems! (Hahaha not really we still don't know how to solve your problems but we're working on it).

In this week's episode, we let Father Chuck choose the topic, and he asks us "Is religion good?" We start off by trying to define religion in our own ways, talk about passages in the book of James, bring up the Denzel Washington vehicle Book of Eli, explore the divide as well as the influence between religion and politics. It gets deep. Also something about Pharrell and his hat....you'll just have to listen.

It's that dreaded time for children of all ages: Back to School season! In this episode the guys reflect on the anxiety associated with having to return to school, no thanks to corporations like JC Penney who felt it necessary to interrupt our summer TV programming with back to school sale commercials. We also talk about what it's like from the perspective of a parent and a teacher. Also, in perfect back to school fashion, the guys reflect on their summer vacation. We also talk about our experiences at different types of camps growing up, most notably "Youth Camp." At Youth Camp students typically make some pretty serious commitments, but once you're two weeks into the new school year, most of those commitments were thrown out the window. Why is that? Is it healthy to instill that kind of thinking to an emotionally vulnerable teenage mind? Also, Space Camp and Puppet Ministry.

Star Trek has entered its 50th year in our society. For 5 decades, the legendary title has existed in our pop culture lexicon as a series of TV shows, movies, books, videogames, and pizza slicers (look up the Enterprise Pizza Slicer and tell me you don't want one). Like Dungeons & Dragons and calculus, it is a long-lasting staple in nerd culture. So, of course, we're here to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and we do that by inviting Father Fun once again to join JP, Matt and Father Chuck to geek their hearts out and nerd all over the Star Trek mythology. This is the episode we've all been waiting to do (well, this and the inevitable Sliders episode)!

While this episode is mostly a discussion about the movie, it also serves as a primer for another episode coming this week focused on celebrating Star Trek's 50th Anniversary, so keep your eyes open for that episode! Matt talks about his new favorite show Scream, based on the popular 90's slasher film and Father Chuck gives his thoughts on DC's latest, the DC Universe Rebirth. They also talk at length about their favorite topic: fandom. JP and Matt also announce that they will be attending Fan Expo Dallas. It's a great episode where the guys just let their hair down and riff. Join them!

In this episode we discuss The Apocalypse, The Book of Revelation, and a lot of Buffy and Angel references are dropped. The end of the world is a sensitive, sacred subject for a lot of Christians, mainly because the rapture was probably used to convert them. But Father Chuck drops a bomb on the idea of the rapture, and everything presented by Left Behind-ism. Ultimately though? This episode is about more than just the end of the world and riffing on apocalypse fiction. We go deep into what it means when everything is written, when fate is sealed, when all is said and done, how does it inform who we are and how we act? Also Harley's and Uzi's.

It seems like these days everything we love is problematic. But did you know that there was a time when everything you loved was Satanic? I mean it probably still is, but used to be, too. Welcome to the Satanic Panic! It was an era in American religious paranoia where every parent feared that their children would be tormented by Satan and his minions through their toys, cartoons, movies, music, videogames and table top RPG's. Abandon all hope ye who rolls a D20! The panic was so widespread and impacted so many homes that its effects are still felt today - just look at the exploitation of fear and outrage from modern media.
In this episode we're joined by another Guest Co-Host, our good friend Keelan. Keelan is a musician who works for a non-profit, and has known Father Chuck since they were children. Unfortunately Matt couldn't make it because of a bout with a cheese grater (the cheese grater won), but he is certainly with us in spirit as we take on THE SATANIC PANIC!

ROB BELL joins JP, Matt and Father Chuck as we conclude the spiritual trilogy that started with nostalgia, continued with hype and now comes full circle with being fully present. Rob and the guys then proceed to touch on the spirituality found in surfing, and how to discover your voice. There also might be some talk about Dukes of Hazzard and CHiPS. Of course this all happens after the guys have to seek composure because, holy crap you guys, it's Rob Bell -- New York Times Best-Selling author of books such as Velvet Elvis, Love Wins, and How to Be Here! -- AND HE IS ON OUR PODCAST. You do not want to miss our best episode yet! You will not be disappointed!

JP, Father Chuck and Matt are joined by Official Friend of The MoDCast Father Fun! You may remember him as our first guest way back on Episode 7 where we talked about video games. In this episode, he brings up the issue of hype, and how we've all succumbed to it. The guys also talk about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is absolutely killing it, and go into detail on how much they all loved Captain America: Civil War (Careful, spoilers abound if you haven't seen it!). In usual Masters of Divinity fashion, however, we also talk about the theological and real-life consequences of hype, and how it relates to the narrative of our lives. It's a keeper folks! Enjoy!

Episode 10! We made it to episode 10! Numfar, do the dance of joy! We want to thank everyone for listening, if it wasn't for your support we probably wouldn't be encouraged enough to get this far in this podcast, as our combined egos can only take us so far. In this episode JP shares with Father Chuck and Matt the news about Space Jam 2 going into production, which leads to an in-depth and fun conversation about nostalgia and living in the NOW. Is nostalgia a good thing or a bad thing? Are Millennials inflicted by Nostalgia or do we just roll around in it like a pig in mud? And just how does one stay present in a world obsessed with the past? Find out today in episode 10!

What's happening? It's all happening! We don't have a topic this week so we just go. We talk about movies, comics, guns, the moral dilemma of celebrating the death of our enemies (both in real life and in videogames), JP reveals that he used to be a Mall Ninja and the guys reflect on times when they cut themselves very, very badly. And so much more! So, so much more...it's a great episode where we just be ourselves and have fun. And if you're having fun, be sure to subscribe, rate and review us on iTunes. We want to beat Joel Osteen! Only you can help us achieve that goal!

JP, Matt and Father Chuck return this week to discuss video games and gamer culture with their first ever guest, Father Patrick Funston(aka Father Fun)! The gang also discovers a revelation about Father Chuck, something he has to come to terms with and reconcile on the show. Luckily, his friends were there to mock and laugh at him-- er I mean, support. We all support Father Chuck's cultural appropriation! Whether you're only familiar with Duck Hunt or are currently neck-deep in corpses in Dark Souls III; a casual player or a hardcore gamer; we think you'll enjoy the discussion, as our guest Father Patrick, a hardcore gamer himself, takes us to school about our own thoughts on gaming. We explore indie gaming, the GamerGate controversy, divisions amongst cultures and subcultures, our own nostalgic experiences in gaming and the games that impacted us on a spiritual level. If you thought we couldn't get anymore nerdier, watch us descend into the pits of ULTIMATE GAMING NERDOM! Don't forget to subscribe, rate and review, and follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

There are those who believe that Jesus was a Spaceman. Some believe that He was in fact a space cowboy who can shoot rainbows out of his fingers. That's not what this episode is about, but we do talk a fair bit about aliens, UFO's, and the like. Did you grow up watching those UFO documentaries on FOX? Have you seen M. Night Shyamalan's SIGNS or Robert Zemeckis's CONTACT? Do ya just like aliens? This episode is so you, man.

By the power of Grayskull! Episode 2 has arrived! This week JP, Matt and Chuck talk about the trend of the spirituality vs. religion debate. The gang also discusses how the recent indie horror hit THE WITCH ties into the discussion of visceral spirituality. Not nearly as nerdy as last week, but nerdy nonetheless! We promise not to let you down with a lack of nerdiness. That's the MOD Guarantee.
