Dogs are simply amazing. They have become part of our family and an integral part of our society--sometimes in horrifying ways. Many people turn their heads to look away at the bad, but dog rescuers do not. My rescue world is filled with amazing people that I am proud to know. It is also filled with a ton of drama. As construction starts on an old horse farm, David and his team are busy making sure everything is perfect for their new residents. From Cage to Couch does incredible work taking broken beagles from labs that were used for testing and giving them back the life thy deserve. Mary, the Founder, and her sister started the organzation as a huge bust happened in 2022. The best way to get to the puppy mill and puppy store problem is to SEE what is going on that is hidden behind closed doors. It is atrocious and inhumane. Our nation is in a crisis right now as shelters flood with owner surrenders and strays. Many pet owners have lost all hope. It would be interesting to see how many people listening have their microchips completely updated. Many times, people move and forget to update it or they change their phone number and forget to update their pet's chip. As a health care worker, Katelin burned out quickly during Covid, so when the opportunity to start her own small business arose, she took it. I decided to turn a Live Like Roo story into a podcast because it is just so special. Sometimes fate steps in when you need it the most. What you may see as a disposable annoyance on a city street, some people see as a family pet. My jaw was on the floor for a lot of this interview. Natalie and her colleagues at Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue do so much great work for injured, discard pigeons and doves. When you hear what some of these birds go through, it is really hard to believe. Dr. Horchak was my go-to for all things cancer-related and old hot mess chihuahua related when she was with a local Chicago vet. She uprooted and opened her OWN practice in Nashville and though I was sad, I was so proud of her. Elli Frank adopted Mr. Bones from an open admission shelter and because of his reactivity in situations that caused him stress and angst, she had to say goodbye to him with a behavior euthanasia. Elli was talking about this long before many were brave enough to tell the truth about what happened to some animals. Elli also bases her rescue on QUALITY and not QUANTITY. There is no competition with other groups. She just wants to give the animals in her care the absolute best. Is it always perfect? No, but she is doing it the right way. When an undercover animal abuse investigator with 20+ years of experience says something bothers him, you know it is legit. Many years ago, the practice of luring racing greyhounds with live rabbits was investigated and many swept the practice under the rug or claimed "it did not happen."
Cue investigator Pete Paxton, who conducted an undercover investigation in partnership with Grey2k USA. What they found was beyond shocking and their investigation, with your help, will hopefully lead to a federal bill called the Greyhound Protection Act.

A few weeks ago, Foster Pet Outreach received a letter that scorned them for spending money on sick and old animals. I wanted to have Alyssa on the podcast to discuss the note and their rebuttal and we had a great conversation about it.
Zoey was simply the most magical creature ever. All of her quirks and all of her issues taught us so much. She was one of my biggest mistakes, but certainly my favorite mistake.
We met her on the way to the dentist in 2005. On the way home from the dentist after convincing Schipp we had to have her, I put $850 on my credit card at Happiness is Pets and we took her home. She was 9 weeks old. There are so many mistakes we made in that one little paragraph, but I am not here to rehash those.
We lived on the 3rd floor and we were constantly carrying her up and down the steps to house break her. We were young and dumb thinking we could raise a puppy.
She quickly became my whole heart and her and Ralph were best friends. She fostered over 20 dogs with us and though she was not a fan of the bigger dogs, she was so patient as we helped others find their forevers.
She was dramatic and vocal and cuddly and she leaves a huge f-ing hole in our family. Every day she did something that made me laugh or smile and though she came from a shi**y pet store, she is one of the main reasons that I am in rescue.
I love you Zoom Zoom. I miss you so much. Our lives are forever changed. I wish we just had more time.

Melissa Lipani has an amazing therapy dog, who has been battling cancer. It is heartbreaking, but she takes it all in stride and shares "Cappy" with the world to help remedy misperceptions of pit bulls. She works for Best Friends and has fostered over 100 dogs. She is a great human.
Caragh from Wellness & Wags recently received her nation certification in canine massage. She helps Live Like Roo Foundation with their bucket list nights by giving dogs their massages in swanky hotels. She has a vast knowledge of a dog's body and what works for your dog. Not all owner surrenders and supports are bad. Many people judge without knowing the full story. I have had a lot of incidents the past few weeks that spoke volumes about this very subject. We need to remain compassionate with people that do not have the same resources as the rest of us.

He joined us at an event at Speakeasy Customs and Classics and gave us some insight on his unique life.

The trials and tribulations of adopting or fostering a dog are no joke, but the application and interview process has also been difficult as Heather has tried to find the perfect fit for her home.

Chicago Animal Care and Control is one of the most important city-run organizations. Yet, a few weeks ago, without warning they fired what many thought was the best Director in decades. A shit storm ensued and we are trying to sort everything out to be sure people understand WHAT is going on and HOW they can help. Oh, and would Heather ever apply for the Director job? The answer made me giggle.

Matt Nelson of We Rate Dogs and Thoughts of Dog dropped out of school to run a Twitter account. Well, maybe it is not that simple. It isn't and as you hear on this podcast, Matt is brilliant and created a must-follow account that he was able to monetize using something everyone loves-DOGS! With millions of followers, the pressure to be great can be immense, but he has studied his audience and has made the perfect formula that simply puts smiles on faces during a crazy time in this country.
"You have to give them time and space. If I met you and came up and kissed you on the face you may be like 'hey, I am in my bubble here. That is a little intense.' It is no different for animals." Dana takes the animals no one else wants. She is an extraordinary foster and gives some great advice in this podcast. Fostering is not easy, but it is so rewarding and it is VERY beneficial to hear from someone who has been through SO MUCH. She takes the old, the broken, and the ones with behavior issues. What she does makes her a gem in the rescue community.

Things get a tad heated when we discuss why more women are immersed if rescue, but it is a great debate and one we would like to explore further. When Stephanie Doris saw Nana, she knew she had to have her. She dropped everything and went and scooped her up. Nana quickly became an internet sensation after her ears were removed because of a very bad crop job. She is an amazing ambassador for the breed, as is her mom.
Dana was my friend. She was a friend to so many. But especially to the animals. Her face lit up when she looked into the eyes of an animal. Cancer is awful. It took away a woman making a huge difference to sooo many. I will miss you Dana. So many will.
This is a replay of the podcast that I did with her a few months ago. I love to hear her voice and learn from her. Each of us can take a little something away from the legacy that she left. Her shoes can never ever be filled properly.
