Wednesday, multiple politicians were injured in a shooting at a Congressional Baseball practice. As expected, the tragedy sparked a heated debate on gun control. Elsewhere, top Michigan officials have been charged with involuntary manslaughter due to Flint's ongoing water crisis. Trump, to impeach or not to impeach. Why Do Republicans bother lying?
U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday attacked news reports based on unidentified sources as phony and dismissed leaks from the White House as "fake news," following reports his son-in-law tried to set up a secret channel of communications with Moscow before Trump took office.
Trump returned to the White House after a nine-day trip to the Middle East and Europe that ended on Saturday to face more questions about alleged communications between Jared Kushner and Russia's ambassador to Washington.
"It is my opinion that many of the leaks coming out of the White House are fabricated lies made up by the #FakeNews media," Trump wrote in a series of Twitter posts on Sunday.
Shortly after the tweets, Trump's Homeland Security Secretary, John Kelly, made the rounds of Sunday television news shows to praise any so-called back channel communications, especially with Russia, as "a good thing."
The White House faces mounting questions about potential ties between Russia and Trump's presidential campaign, which are also the subject of criminal and congressional investigations. Trump officials were preparing to establish a "war room" to address an issue that has begun to dominate his young presidency.
Two Republican U.S. senators played down the Kushner reports on Sunday, while the former director of national intelligence, James Clapper, took a darker view of such contacts with representatives of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Whenever you see the words 'sources say' in the fake news media, and they don't mention names," Trump wrote, "it is very possible that those sources don't exist but are made up by fake news writers. #FakeNews is the enemy!"
I was in a Starbucks on the way to a train, I think last year. I had already ordered, and was waiting for the barista to make my drink. The barista addressed the woman standing near me, who had ordered first - she looked to be about 60.
Barista: I’m sorry, we don’t have any eggnog left for eggnog lattes. Can I get you anything else?
This customer takes about 10 seconds to respond, but before she says anything, she gets this tight-lipped grin on her face. She looked like she’d just realized she’d won a game and was about to play the winning card.
Customer: You know you’ve ruined my whole morning, don’t you? This is unacceptable. You will make me TWO mocha lattes and I hope you’d don’t expect me to pay for my order.
Barista: Of course ma’am.
After another minute of making her order, the Barista says: The eggnog latte is a seasonal item, and we’ve actually had very few requests for it. I think that’s why we don’t have enough, they haven’t been sending us very much.
Customer: Oh… just.. SHUT UP!
At this point the customer’s companion joined her from outside the store, and she tried to say something to the barista as if it was all fine and it was just customer bantering. But it clearly was not. I still bear some shame in not stepping in on behalf of the barista. I read comedic posting sites such as “Not Always Right” on a regular basis, but I’d never actually seen such behavior in person before.

On Thursday, Greg Gianforte, the Republican candidate in this month's congressional special election in Montana, told voters that he couldn't support the House GOP's health care bill.
But just a few hours later, Gianforte was caught on tape -- on a call with his lobbyist donors -- celebrating the passage of a bill that would take away thousands of Montanans' and millions of Americans' health care.
It's the kind of brazen, cynical talking out of both sides of one's mouth that you'd expect from the bad-guy politician in a cheesy movie. But this is real life, and it shows just how much is at stake in this special election.
Fortunately, Montanans have a better choice. Rob Quist is running a grassroots campaign to represent hardworking Montanans and their families in Congress and won't be beholden to special interests. He believes in protecting our right to get the health care we need -- and unlike his opponent, he means what he says.

esident Donald Trump asserted on Monday that President Barack Obama’s health care law was only popular because, like the former president, it was being replaced.
“The press is making Obamacare look so good all of the sudden,” Trump said at a health care listening session on Monday. “I’m watching the news. It looks so good. They are showing these reports, this one gets so much and this one gets so much.”
“First of all, it covers very few people,” he continued. “Because Obama’s gone, you know, things are going to be very bad this year for the people with Obamacare. They’re going to have tremendous increases.”
Trump argued that “whether we [repeal] it or not, it will be imploded off the map.”
“The press is making it look so wonderful so that if we end it, everyone’s going to say, ‘Oh, remember how great Obamacare used to be, remember how wonderful it used to be, it was so great,'” the president complained. “It’s a little bit like President Obama, when he left people liked him. When he was here people didn’t like him so much.”

President Donald Trump called the legal system "broken" on Saturday morning, a day after he suggested the White House could release a further draft immigration order early next week.
"Our legal system is broken! "77% of refugees allowed into U.S. since travel reprieve hail from seven suspect countries." (WT) SO DANGEROUS!" the president tweeted.

In just a few weeks in office, President Trump has made striking use of his power to issue Executive Orders, using them to pave the way for the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, change the rules about federal regulations, and enact a controversial ban on admission to the U.S. for range of immigrants and refugees.
But historically, most executive orders have been issued with little fanfare, says Kenneth R. Mayer, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and author of With the Stroke of a Pen: Executive Orders and Presidential Power. “Most real executive orders are pretty routine,” Mayer tells TIME. “In the 1930s and ’40s, Roosevelt had to use an executive order every time he wanted to exempt someone from mandatory retirement.”
But that doesn’t mean that unilateral executive action hasn’t had a major effect on the history of the United States.
Some of the most important unilateral executive action in American history, like George Washington’s Neutrality Proclamation and Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, have not technically been executive orders. Mayer says that, for this reason, the number of orders a President issues is not a good measure of how he used unilateral power. Nevertheless, over the years the executive order has become a more controversial tool and more “prominent in the public psyche,” perhaps partly because its formality makes such orders easy to track.

Mexico will not pay for Donald Trump's border wall, the country's president has said in a message to the nation.
Enrique Pena Nieto said he "lamented" the plans for the barrier, but made no mention of changing a scheduled trip to Washington to meet the US president.
Mr Trump responded saying "it would be better to cancel" the 31 January meeting if Mexico is unwilling to pay.
He has signed an executive order for an "impassable physical barrier" and insisted Mexico will reimburse the US.
"The U.S. has a 60 billion dollar trade deficit with Mexico. It has been a one-sided deal from the beginning of NAFTA with massive numbers of jobs and companies lost," he wrote.
"If Mexico is unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall, then it would be better to cancel the upcoming meeting."
Earlier Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray - in Washington to lead a delegation that has held talks at the White House - told the Televisa network Mexico's president was still weighing next Tuesday's visit but said "the meeting stands for now".
Mr Trump said in an interview with ABC News that Mexico would "absolutely, 100%" reimburse the US for his wall.
But Congress would have to approve funding for the structure, which is estimated to cost billions of dollars.

This week in “reverse racism” news, former American Idol contestant Bo Bice is outraged after being referred to as a “white boy” at a Popeye’s restaurant.
Bice, who competed on Season 4 of “American Idol,” complained about the service he received at a Popeye’s in the Hartsfield–Jackson Airport on Monday.
In a deleted Facebook post, Bice claimed that he was the victim of “racist behavior” because one female employee said to another, “He’s already got his [order], that white boy over there.”
Bice threatened legal action against Popeye’s, and also called out Facebook for allegedly deleting his initial post about the incident. In an interview with Fox 5 news on Tuesday, Bice tearfully recounted his story, saying:
“If the tables had been turned and I had used something...and been as insensitive as to say something like that, I would be boycotted. There would be people not buying my albums, there would be people coming and picketing at my shows, and everything else.”
Bice, who hasn’t released an album since “3” in 2010 (it sold 11,000 copies), received backlash after the Fox 5 video started making the rounds on social media:

The three central characters, played vividly and meticulously by Taraji P. Henson, Janell Monae and Octavia Spencer, do well to authentically encapsulates the essence of empowered , black feminism during a time when it was suppressed thanks in part to societal biases fueled by white supremacy.To witnesses the debunking of such beliefs, that these "figures" were intellectually inferior, creates repeated moments of immense satisfaction and joy that never feels patronizing or playacted. Beyond its' crowd pleasing aspects though stirs burrowing concerns that relate to the omission of other such figures and events from the pages of American history. Nevertheless, those lingering concerns can not prevent this film from being triumphant in providing models, for girls of all shades, to aspire to as well accomplished women, gaining the opportunity, to finally witness their mirror images receive proper praise and attention! Donald Trump’s legions of rabid supporters are in for an unpleasant shock once they figure out how many of his campaign promises he’s going to flip-flop on. Yesterday, he announced he wouldn’t be repealing the entirety of the Affordable Care Act, which is all the GOP has tried to do for the past eight years. Today, he suddenly announced that he isn’t going to be “ripping up” President Obama’s historic nuclear peace treaty with the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Donald Trump’s did release a plan for his first 100 days in office last month, the details of which have many experts expressing serious alarm over how America’s 2017 will play out.
The very first pledge he made was to cancel “every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum, and order issued by President Obama.” Faced with constant obstruction by the Republican Congress, Obama was forced to use executive orders to push forward various issues on his agenda.
Of course, Trump has also vowed to repeal Obamacare, which would strip over 20 million Americans of their health insurance.
Trump has also vowed to impose a 45 percent tariff on Chinese imports, officially branding China as “a currency manipulator” while also seeking a 35 percent tariff on Mexican imports. These tariffs would likely throw China and Mexico into a recession, possibly resulting in American businesses being banned from their markets, setting off a trade war that would result in...

When a man and a women meet for the first time there is something that happens along side this first impression encounter. Some rules and guidelines are outlined and established. Boundaries and barriers are put in place as a sort of containment system that will govern how these two interact with each in the future. This starts the “categorizing” process. So why do we categorize each other upon meeting? Why cant we just leave everyone in the same category and not be defined and governed by such feeble rules. The answer is simple and yet it is not a gender specific thing, but rather categorizing is a human trait. Everyone we meet we categorize. This allows us to follow the rules of how we are to interact with this person in the future. So lets look at the differences between men and women when it comes to categories on this episode of Eclectic Perspectives. We will also look at the impact of labeling, stereotyping, and judging as well.

The dating game introduces us to many different personalities and people. The ones to be wary of are those vultures known as "players". Without warning they will swoop in and prey on your weaknesses. Once they have you securely gripped in their talons, your heart will mercilessly be ripped out. You will be left defenceless as they move on in search of their next unsuspecting victim. It's a painful fate to suffer, but knowing how to identify a player will allow you to seek refuge and avoid an imminent attack. Unfortunately, there is no distinguishing feature that makes it possible to visually identify a player. Your instinct and intuition must be trusted to detect any sign of being played.
And with that... the game begins.

THIS nursery rhyme remains a way for youngsters to defend themselves against verbal taunting, but unfortunate, words can hurt, and words cannot be ignored. In recent years, as African-Americans, we have been-in the midst of a disturbing cultural controversy around the words that are projected in hip-hop and rap music. According to Ice-T, the exaggerated machismo style of rap "doesn't mean anything." On the other hand, contradicting himself in 1994, he said that his rap was reality-based and that what he said was "real" because it was a reflection of how he lived and talked, This attempt to have it both ways is reflexive of the problematic gender message of "gangsta rap" and "booty rap" music.
There has been a growing war between Black men and women since the '60s, and hip-hop is a significant and influential site of contemporary gender battles. Added to this cultural "war between the sexes" is the overriding influence of the huge profit-making machine which is hip-hop. It is critical to note that gangsta rap does not appear out of nowhere. It is profoundly connected to patriarchical values that are pervasive in American society.
These values underscore the belief that the way to be a man is to have power, and in gangsta and booty rap and culture, this often means the use of obscene language, glorification of violence and profound objectification and disrespect of women. If such words and images are where many young Black folks get their gender messages, including their ideas about sex, love, friendship, dating and marriage, then rap music tells us some disturbing things about how the hip-hop generation sees and reacts to gender issues.
For those of you who do not know what “down-low brother” means, it is a term of art used to describe African-American men who live a heterosexual life to the outside world but are underground homosexuals. These men come in different personality meaning businessmen, thugs, blue collar workers and teenagers. The secret of their homosexual life is kept private from their unsuspecting wives and girlfriends.
Ordinarily another man’s chosen sexual behavior would not be the center of discussion, however, there is a growing concern about how this clandestine activity has caused a drastic increase in the rate of HIV infection among Black women.

GeeChee One Magazine presents their annual award show on October 10, 2010 at Sterett Hall in the lovely city of Charleston, SC. This show showcases the music, poetry, and brief interviews of the nominees and fans of this acclaimed series.
From the perspective of a male:
The problem is that we are turning into a nation of b**ches. The standard held up to us is entirely female. This can be easily witnessed in the rise of the "metrosexual," the straight man so feminized that, like a woman, he is obsessed with his appearance, daubs on makeup and opts for cosmetic surgery. Today, men are supposed to have "relationship skills," and they are expected to be capable of achieving "greater intimacy" and to openly express their emotions. They are supposed to be "soul mates" and to "communicate" like girlfriends, not act like testosterone-charged lovers. But at the same time, today's woman has still not shed her typical female hypocrisy; as usual, she still wants it both ways. When there's hard work to be done or bills to be paid, that's when she wants us to act like "real men."
To love someone who is incarcerated or not to love them...
Is this a question to ask yourself? For some, loving an incarcerated person is a fact of life. For some, it is a realization yet to happen. For some, it would be a fate worse than death!
Is this the most atrocious thing that one could consider? How on earth could you be involved in a relationship with someone who is imprisoned for an extended period of time? What kind of life do you have, or will you have? What did they do? How do you know that you are safe? Are they worth your love and commitment?

I have a question: Is there a way to go naturally “gracefully”? I am really considering going natural after 10+ of having relaxed hair. I am going natural for several reasons, but was wondering, what is the best approach to this? Should I grow out my perm? Should I just cut it all off? In the beginning stage is it okay to wear braids for a while so the hair can grow? I am terrified of this and guess I should really give it some serious thought. Another thing is I am a recent graduate and in the market for a job. Will having natural hair scare away potential employers? I guess if worn the right way it won’t. Sorry for all the questions but I am really curious as how to approach this and go through with going natural, especially in the beginning phase and getting used the change.

He was single and kept attracting all the same type of women. He realized I was attracting what he was. If he's always out at the club, or the strip club, those were the people he was going to attract. When he gets himself together, the right person will come.

Violence is a learned behavior. Children often experience violence for the first time in their lives in their homes or in the community. This first taste of violence may include their parents, family members or their friends. Studies have shown that children who witness violent acts, either as a victim or as a victimizer, are more likely to grow up to become involved in violence.
There’s so much talk about education, or the lack thereof that our kids are receiving from our public schools. I myself have spoken on the subject and while I feel that there is definite need for change in that space, another area is being neglected as well.
Parents seem to have forgotten that part of their job is to educate their children on the issues that aren’t covered in school and that are also of particular relevance for people of African descent. Our heritage is one strong in the oral tradition that teaches not only our history but important life lessons and I say it’s time we remembered that. So here’s my list of things that every Black child should be taught by their parents:
- Respect and reverence for their elders
- How to save and invest money
- Manners and etiquette (this includes conflict resolution)
- Entrepreneurship
- Black Pride/Ancestry (sorely lacking here, I’ll save further thoughts on this topic for another post)
- How to be responsible and keep your word
- To strive for excellence in everything
- Spirituality (not necessarily religion)
- Respect of your body (health, sex, etc.)
- To give to others that are less fortunate
Yes, I know this just adds on to everything else you have to do as a parent, but feeding, clothing and shuttling off to school is just the beginning.

I'm often asked, "Why did my partner cheat?" Often an affair is a symptom. A spouse cheats because there's vulnerability, either in your partner or in your relationship. Problems can occur if your relationship has become dry, if you're not interacting with each other, if the sex life is nil or if there's been some changes where a lot of the attention is going outside of the relationship. Your partner may be hungry, and seeking to fill that hunger through other means. Whether it be through cyber sex, through emotional intimacy with coworkers or through having an affair. To get to the heart of the reason for the infidelity, consider cheating to be the symptom and not the illness. If there's some vulnerability in your partner - they're feeling lonely, they're feeling bored, they're wanting some excitement. Perhaps they just got a promotion and they're feeling really full of themselves and want to act out. There are lots of reasons why people cheat. What you need to find out is, why did your partner cheat? What is their vulnerability and how do you fill the hole between you?
Even though we know the nature of human beings is to fall in love or lust unwisely, we don't like to admit it and we are afraid of condoning it. We don't want to be the perpetrator or the victim. Denial of it as a common human fragility is usually our way of denying our own vulnerability to temptation, flattery or an impulsive and compelling crush.
We know the rules but do we respect them? We know that those rules are harder to keep than we pretend they are. The fact is that even if most men and women are monogamous, a huge percentage are not-and that percentage grows when you allow for the fact that ambitious, hard driving, fame seeking people are not too likely to be laid back and uninterested in their sexual appetites and emotional connections. They are, let's face it, a high risk group.

Due to the severity of mandatory minimums and the impact it has had on this country's prison population, it is my opinion that the use of informants by the government is a shameful disgrace!
When you are dealing with a person's life, and the fact that a drug conviction, or any conviction with such severe punishment, can mean the end of that life on the outside every effort should be made by the government to see to it that the evidence used to gain a conviction is solid physical evidence gathered through just unmistakable means.
Moreover, where is the power of this country's government anyway! Look, before cocaine reaches America it must be growned, harvested, procesed, packaged then shipped into this country, via air, land, or sea. Who but the government has control over every entry point into this country? It seems to me if drugs are a problem the issue for the government to solve is to stop it before it reaches our communities.
It should be clear to all Americans by now that the current drug policies are not working.
Does America have the funds to house these prisoners, many for the rest of their natural lives! What happens when they get old and are in need of expensive medical care?
Statistics shows that there are currently 117 convicitions daily. The prison population is almost over 2 million. Thus, the current policies have not deterred drug activities in our communities.
This phrase has completely lost its original, covenant-related, meaning. Today, it is interpreted as meaning that blood-related family members are to be considered as more important than anyone else. However, the original meaning is, "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb," or, "My relationship with those to whom I am joined in covenant is to be considered of more value than the relationship with a brother with whom I may have shared the womb."

There is much written by poets about love, but the true warriors among us, including Stevie Wonder, also write about hate, which really is going around hurting people. It must be stopped.
Stephanie Mills sang a song about learning to respect the power of love. It is real, because love is powerful. But we must also learn to respect hatred, the equal and opposite of love, which is just as powerful.
When you step into a war zone, you have to know that you may get hit with shrapnel. You also have to realize that when people are shooting at you, it is easy to lose your head and shoot back. Sometimes return fire can simply flare the conflict.
Black males and females appear to be at war with each other in many corners of this nation. Hateful things are being said back and forth, and things are getting critical for those of us working for unity.
There are still many of us who love each other and who still work against hatred and ignorance. Based on our commitment to each other, we must highlight and combat the ignorant men and women who hate on each other. Left unchecked, their hatred can appear more popular than it really is.
Empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual, political, social, or economic strength of individuals and communities. It often involves the empowered developing confidence in their own capacities.
Sociological empowerment often addresses members of groups that social discrimination processes have excluded from decision-making processes through - for example - discrimination based on disability, race, ethnicity, religion, or gender.
The process which enables individuals/groups to fully access personal/collective power, authority and influence, and to employ that strength when engaging with other people, institutions or society.
Empowerment includes the following, or similar, capabilities:- The ability to make decisions about personal/collective circumstances The ability to access information and resources for decision-making Ability to consider a range of options from which to choose (not just yes/no, either/or.) Ability to exercise assertiveness in collective decision making Having positive-thinking about the ability to make change Ability to learn and access skills for improving personal/collective circumstance. Ability to inform others’ perceptions though exchange, education and engagement. Involving in the growth process and changes that is never ending and self-initiated Increasing one's positive self-image and overcoming stigma Increasing one's ability in discreet thinking to sort out right and wrong
Socioeconomic status (SES) is an economic and sociological combined total measure of a person's work experience and of an individual's or family’s economic and social position relative to others, based on income, education, and occupation.
When analyzing a family’s SES, the household income earners' education and occupation are examined, as well as combined income, versus with an individual, when their own attributes are assessed.
Socioeconomic status is typically broken into three categories, high SES, middle SES, and low SES to describe the three areas a family or an individual may fall into. When placing a family or individual into one of these categories any or all of the three variables (income, education, and occupation) can be assessed.
A fourth variable, wealth, may also be examined when determining socioeconomic status.
Additionally, low income and little education have shown to be strong predictors of a range of physical and mental health problems, ranging from respiratory viruses, arthritis, coronary disease, and schizophrenia.
Parenting is the process of promoting and supporting the physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development of a child from infancy to adulthood. Unfortunately, this process is not the norm that it once was and in fact, their seems to be a role reversal in many cases. Is media the culprit? What is the issue here?
This debut episode of "Eclectic Perspectives" starts off with the exploration of a manifesto written over 100 years ago that is ever so true today as it was back then. The hosts, F. Khristopher Blue and Ayasha Calloway explore the problems affecting the African American population presently as compared to what they faced in the past.
