Tonight we go back almost 20 years in the Tartus to listen to Jimmy Pryor and the Bad Boys of the Blues (Tom Gary piano, John Lukehart guitar, Scott Cochran bass, and Rick Mosqueda drums) Our guest that night was the amazing Scott Stratton. Scott brother of Jeff Stratton performed a lot with us back in the 90s. Scott did Rockabilly including a very good Elvis. In the crowd you can hear Jon East, big Daddy Dennis Kain, and a very drunken fan Oh, and a fan fell, I mean a real fan with blades and stuff!!! :-)

This is the first of two shows. The previous women in blues shows did not feature the whole show in its entirely so tonight we fix that! on August 1 2014 The Blues Army of Des Moines in cooperation with the Hull Ave (owned then by Thomas Morris) put on its first Women in Blues Show. Tonight we listen to the first hour of the show. We start with the house band the Bad Boys of the Blues (Tom Gary, Jon East, Norman Sue, and Scotty Hartung) then in order April May, Barb Baker Miller, Michelle Baldwin, Bluebird Page with Jean Marie, and Krista Haugland, and Madam Jules!
This show was a lot of fun and a lot of work to recreate. I had to search for all the tracks, and try to piece together which came first. special thanks to Lee Bell who not only recorded the shows, but left me hints on the tracks on where they belonged. Rest in Peace my friend you are truly missed!

Tonight we listen to a nearly 25 year old recording from the legendary KFMG! Scott Kay's Local Licks show from 1994! Ronn Hill is the guest and he brought with him his newest release, which at the time he hoped to release within a few weeks. However it seems at least the CD didn't get out until 2002. There are a few songs towards the end of the show that didn't make the CD, but most of the earlier ones did. It is great to hear Ronn's voice again, and to hear him talk about his life and his music.
While I mentioned most people on the podcast there were a few I missed and as promised here they are in the show notes. Scott Kay and KFMG host Ronn Hill. On the original recordings were Ronn Hill on bass and vocal, JC Anderson on guitar, Bryan Mardsen on Keys, Howard Feekerson, John Haun, and Paul Thompson on drums, Frank Trible on guitar. I said during the podcast that Sam Salamone was on the recordings, he is not mentioned, but is listed on the liner notes of the CD. However, I have a feeling those songs were recorded later by Ronn. The recordings were done at Catamount, Juniors motel, and SR Audio. Finally I mention playing on local licks with Bob Dorr, Molly Nova, and John Woody Wood, I forgot to mention Bob Rosenbeck on bass.

1993 is where the time machine takes us tonight as we listen to some early studio and live recordings of the Tom Gary Blues Band. These are so old that I don't remember recording most of them:-) The studio recordings that come first feature Tom Gary on piano and vocal, with Billy Birch on sax, Probably Harry Michaels on guitar, and Steve Green on drums. The two live songs were from a show at Connie's Lounge with the Tom Gary Blues Band, Jonny and the Soul Searchers, and Scotty and the Wingtips. Unfortunately only two songs so far exist. (I am pretty sure I have at least all of my band recorded somewhere) Those two songs feature Dave Nesvette on guitar, Billy Birch on sax, Jay Weaver on bass, and Jimmy Smith on the drums.

Another oldie! Tonight we listen to a recording of John Paul and the HellHounds from around 1988-1990 at the Grand Emporium in Kansas City Misssouri. This show was the original Hellhounds led by John Paul Drum on vocal and harmonica, with Tony Anderson on guitar, Tom Gary on piano, Joe Whitfield on bass, and John Hobbs on drums. John Paul was opening for the great blues legend Junior Wells. It was a great night and meeting Junior wells was amazing.

The tape was originaly recorded live at the Tuba on August 25th 1994 by Bentley Ously of Pragmatic Studios in Kansas City Kansas.

From 1988 its Blue Collar, a band that I played with in Kansas City. This is our original music ( i was wrong on the intro, when I thought it had cover tunes. I was actualy listening to two tapes at the time:-) It features Rick Jaques on Guitar, bass, drums and vocals, Tom Gary on Keyboard, guitar, key bass, and vocal, and Dave McConnel on Drums and back up vocals. It was recorded by Rick Jaques sometime around 1988. It is a mono mix, but sounds great. Somewhere I have most of these songs in stereo and with Dave on lead vocals. Look for a part two:-)

We go in the way back machine to sometime in the summer of 1994. It is a demo tape recorded by the third version of the Tom Gary Blues Band. Some of these recordings ended up on Yesterday and Today released in 2008. Tonights show stars John Lukehart on guitar and vocals, John Woody Wood on drums and vocals, Jim Faar on bass guitar, and Tom Gary on piano and vocals. The session was recorded live in studio with no overdubs at Juniors Motel. It was engineered by Kurt Kaufmann.

Cassette release recorded in 1992, and released in 1994. It was recorded in Otho Iowa at Juniors Motel. It took about an hour to record pretty much one take. Kurk Kaufmann produced and engineered the session. It is just me and the piano. I never really intended to release it as a product, but a couple years later I put it out as my second cassette. Many of the songs ended up on either Iowa Corn Fed Blues, or Yesterday and Today.

Tonight we feature the 1988 double cassette release of the Blue Band called Dealer's Choice. It was their greatest hits to that point. The band in 1988 featured Bob Dorr on harmonica and vocal, Molly Nova on Violin, Bass, and Vocal, Jeff Peterson on guitar and vocal, Ron DeWitte guitar, bass, and vocal, Bobby Thompson on sax, and Bryce, Loshman on drums. Som of these recordings go back to 1981 and include Bill Cannon on sax, Phil Bunky Marlow on sax, E scott Esbeck in guitar and bass, Phil Mass sound and lights. Tom Tatman at Catamount recordings was the Engineer.
Just a note, technical difficulties and strep throat cut his show short. I could talk about the Blue band for hours and hours!!

Tonights show is an interview of Jimmy Pryor by his wife Cheryl Pryor back in April of 2003. This is the first half hour. Next week we will continue with part two. They talk mostly about Detroit and the years 1950-59, but they do mention his early years of working in the coal mines and getting to Des Moines in 1960. This is a very cool show.

He is currently working on a new release and has over 40 songs to choose from. His last release was not a double CD, but two seperate CDS! Blues Farm, and Recycled Souls. last year we heard Blues Farm, tonight we hear Recycled Souls.

Blue Collar was a studio band from Kansas City that was around in the late 80s. Rick Jaques led the band and played guitar and sometimes bass. Dave McConnell sang and played drums and Tom Gary sang and played keyboards. This version of the band played one live gig, but recorded many hours of great blues both cover and originals.
