Baraza Hot Tea: In My Head | Gender-Based Violence In Kenya.

Gender-Based violence refers to harmful acts directed at an individual based on their gender. It is rooted in gender inequality, the abuse of power, and harmful norms. Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue.

There are 5 types of Sexual and Gender-based violence; Sexual Violence, Physical Violence, Emotional and Psychological Violence, Harmful Traditional Practices, and Socio-Economic Violence.

Violence against women and girls is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world. It knows no social, economic, or national boundaries. Worldwide, an estimated one in three women will experience physical or sexual abuse in her lifetime.

Gender-based violence undermines the health, dignity, security, and autonomy of its victims, yet it remains shrouded in a culture of silence. Victims of violence can suffer sexual and reproductive health consequences, including forced and unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, traumatic fistula, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, and even death.

In this episode, we talk about gender-based violence in Kenya. Kenya, like many other countries around the world, experienced an increase in reported cases of physical and sexual violence, including domestic violence, against women and girls during restrictions on mobility to curb the spread of the virus.

Even before the pandemic, high levels of violence against women and girls, impunity, and a lack of accountability and services for survivors were ongoing problems in Kenya.

Survivors and others interviewed described sexual abuse, beatings, being thrown out of the home, forced child marriage, and female genital mutilation. Women and girls living in poverty or precarious economic conditions – conditions often created or worsened by the pandemic – were particularly vulnerable to sexual harassment and abuse. Many abusers were close family members, including husbands.

Thank you for listening.

In this episode, we dive into active citizenship and responsive governance. The question is are you an active citizen, do you even know what that entails?

What makes you an active citizen?

Active Citizens connects people, supporting them to develop their skills and knowledge to build fairer and more resilient societies. The most important thing that Active Citizens have in common is that they seek to build trust within and between communities. And they do this with resourcefulness and imagination.

We further look at the qualities of a leader in regards to the upcoming elections in 2022 and whether voters understand the qualities

of a leader they want, as well as catching up on the current political developments.

Stay tuned for there's more to come in the episodes that follow.

Ushawai Cancel mtu or canceliwa?

Cancel culture or call-out culture is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles – whether it be online, on social media, or in person. Those subject to this ostracism are said to have been "cancelled".

Is cancel culture a mob mentality, or a long overdue way of speaking truth to power?

To many people, this process of publicly calling for accountability, and boycotting if nothing else seems to work, has become an important tool of social justice — a way of combatting, through collective action, some of the huge power imbalances that often exist between public figures with far-reaching platforms and audiences, and the people and communities their words and actions may harm.

Listen to the podcast and give us your feedback.

Baraza Hot Tea: #Teaanddeal|Catching up with Us

Happy New Year and thank you for tuning in here. In today's episode, we catch up and share what we have been up to, lessons learnt and what we look forward to 2021.

As we celebrate and look towards Valentine's Day BHT appreciates and love you all.

B.H.T LOVE VALENTINE

Love can't be described.

It has no shape, it has no form.

Love is not an object.

Love does not conform.

Love enters our lives

The moment we are born.

From the cradle to the grave,

Love's in everyone.

Love burns like a candle

That sometimes flickers but never dies.

Love may be invisible,

Although it's right before your eyes,

Love can leave you empty,

Love can make you whole.

Love can make or break you,

Love is in your soul.

Love is in your heart,

Love is in your mind.

Love doesn't discriminate,

Love is always blind.

Love is universal,

It encompasses the globe.

No matter where you are,

Love has a language all its own.

Love is all around you.

There's plenty of love to spare.

You cannot see or touch it,

But love is everywhere.

Love's the greatest power,

And yet it is so small.

Love's a gift from God

To be shared amongst us all.

Thank You!!

Baraza Hot Tea: #Lengapolitics|Own Your Country.

Hello people.

It's been a while since we posted something but here we are with a new series, OWN YOUR COUNTRY.

Have you read the constitution?

BHT: OWN YOUR COUNTRY PODCAST: The Constitution Episode 1

Constitution: A constitution is a set of rules that guides how a country, state, or other political organization works. The constitution may tell what the branches of the government are, what powers they have, and how they work. It may also state the rights of citizens.

Government structure: Separation of Powers between the three arms of government i.e, executive, legislature and judiciary.

The executive – who holds executive authority and the qualifications.

The legislature – the composition, and representation of the people. An introduction of an upper house – the Senate.

The judiciary – qualifications to hold office and appointment.

Devolution – only two levels of Government: National and Counties.

Citizenship – among other issues, gender discrimination was ended, and citizens who acquire foreign citizenship will not lose their Kenyan citizenship.

Keep it Locked here. Enjoy!!

Baraza Hot Tea: #Us4herdialogues|Society's Roles In Menstruation.

Society’s Role in Menstruation.US 4 HER *is a programme about taking up the responsibility and acknowledging that not every girl out there can afford sanitary towels. It began as a conversation and morphed into this beautiful monthly activity. Menstrual hygiene is not only the woman’s responsibility but everyone’s, male or female. You can’t save everyone but you can help someone, so why not.

We aim to spread the love and hopefully inspire our fellow youth and humanity at large to start caring again. To be involved in each other’s lives even in the smallest ways like buying a sanitary towel.*The discussion is set on Society’s Role in Menstruation. *Where we talk about each individual’s responsibility in our communities toward ensuring that a girl gets to experience healthy menstruation and that they do not have to feel ashamed talking about it. That we should provide safe spaces for them to express themselves freely without fear of being judged. That it’s about time girls started sharing their first time with their dad’s Menstruation is a very important process, painful but still beautiful to a woman.

And understanding what roles we play in it, is key freedom.*
