The only thing holding us back is ourselves and possible perceptions of obstacles.

By aligning our values and intentions with our activity in the world, we become catalysts for positive change within our community. This prompts us to ask the introspective question: "Who are we when no one else is looking?" It calls us to live in alignment with our truest selves, even in the presence of challenge or the absence of external validation. Our teaching is to assist each of us to go up our own stairs, finding out who we are….step by step. Often we get the idea, then the vocabulary of a new way of being. Then we learn techniques to live the life we want and then it’s practice, practice, practice until we stand firmly on that new step, confident & calm. This months topic is moving from Good to Great to Grand, taking the steps to know ourselves.

Regardless of how big our personal and social challenges may be, Spirit is always present. Life is always unfolding perfectly, even when it doesn’t seem like it. Intentionally starting each day with a Grand Rising, connects us with our faith in Truth, Love and Beauty. This simple morning practice of being intentional with how we start our day and greet others allows us to ground ourselves in this Truth every day. The more that we develop a habit of living from this understanding, the stronger our faith becomes.

This journey of paradox calls us to curiosity and a willingness to stay in the question rather than know the answer. This uncertainty leads to vulnerability, which can be challenging. Luckily, there are tools we can use along the way to remember that playfulness is the key even in the midst of challenges.

She is an ordained CSL Minister and is in her tenth year as a minister. Rev. Sunshine Michelle is the Spiritual Director and Senior Minister of Oakland Center for Spiritual Living. She is also the Founding Community Leader of Authenticity Journey of Renewal, a CSL Focus Ministry.
Rev. Sunshine Michelle has a passion for authentic self-expression and convening sacred circles. This is her fourth year serving on the CSL Global Themes Team, and she chairs the CSL Socially Motivated and Spiritually Engaged (SMSE) Committee.

We can get lost, forgetting where we came from and the truth of who we are. But the truth never changes. Those who dare to confront the dark cave of their fears are the ones who are transformed.
Spiritual heroes are those who remember the truth of who they are and where they come from. When we recognize that truth, we can be at home wherever we may go. We so embody Oneness that others are at home in our presence. We then empower others to remember what it is to be at home and to be the heroes of their own journeys.

We welcome for the first time to CSL White Rock ministerial student and practitioner Jade Harms. Jade has graced us with her meditations, and now she is here to deliver the talk on Creating a Life that Matters.
One's vocation is not something out there at the edge of the horizon between now and not yet. Vocation is the Divine energy already and always at work within us. How can we deepen into the wonder of vocation to create a life that matters?
Jade Harms lives in Kelowna, BC, with her partner on the Sylix Okanagan People’s land. She is currently completing her Ministerial Studies. She desires to walk softly and with awareness of the world around her.
Her “dark” night of the soul turned into her driving force for the truth Jade found with the Centers for Spiritual Living. Jade thought there must be more to life and living because she was not finding it and was not having fun. This is when she walked into a center for the first time in the fall of 2015, looking for answers and direction. In January 2016, she started taking classes; 3 years later, she received my Practitioner Certification and moved right into Ministerial studies.
Jade has completed certifications in Erotic Blueprints, Spiritual Technologies, and Harmonizing, all leading to harmony and oneness of life experience. Jade wants to share what she has discovered and help others find it for themselves.

Yet, there is this nagging sense of something missing. Discovering your Timbit is easier than you think. You’re not broken. There’s no work to do. It’s right there!”
Jayme Blenkarn has been active in CSL since 2010; it was the perfect fit for her lifelong search for a like-minded spiritual community. Within a few years, after doing a guest talk at CSL Edmonton Metro, Ministerial Studies became an obvious possibility. (Truth is she has known since she was eight years old that she would be a minister or counselor one day.)
She is currently teaching at NAIT in Edmonton. She loves photography, backyard bird-watching, jaunts near water, and going to the movies. She has worked as a volunteer for the Red Dress Photography Project supporting the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women for several years.
She has experienced significant losses in the last few years and has only recently begun the actual journey through grief. In the dance of sorrow, though, she has discovered the most significant gifts are found while living as her fully authentic self and embracing the knowledge that practicing gratitude is the true seed of Grace. Using the tools and teachings of the Science of Mind, she has manifested a life she genuinely loves.

When Dr. Kenn was asked to write the Daily Guides on the theme “Living Everyday Wonder: Nature,” his mind swirled back to the early days, and he began to appreciate the spirituality he learned in his youth. It is a spirituality based on love, family, community and shared awe of life itself. It is the very foundation of who he is today.
Rev. Dr. Kenn Gordon founded the Centre for Spiritual Living Kelowna, British Columbia, in 1993 with his wife, Rev. Dr. Deborah Gordon. When United Centers for Spiritual Living combined with International Centers for Spiritual Living in 2012, Gordon became the first spiritual leader of the newly formed Centers for Spiritual Living. He served the CSL global community in this role for eight years.

Sure, we can all get angry at times. However, because anger is such a negative emotion, wouldn't it be wonderful to know how to diffuse a volatile situation for a peaceful outcome? Focusing on the "eye" of the storm, where there is peace and calm, we can find our way to calm the turbulence in a metaphorical anger storm. Consciously cooling things down in a heated situation is possible, allowing the best resolution for all.

It’s time to get out of our comfort zone and bring our creative selves and whatever it is we are wanting to do, to the world. As stated in the monthly theme summary, when we dare to present our talents, gifts, and passions, we are both vulnerable and victorious.
Here’s the issue: if we want to be victorious, we must be vulnerable. We must open our hearts, let down our ego defenses, and dare to live authentically if we want the rewards of a life well-lived.

We are God’s “chips off the old block” (per Rocco Errico). Today we move beyond doubts and fears about our abilities, talent, or imagination. Choosing to know ourselves as worthy of and fully connected to the Infinite Creator, we anchor in knowing that we are limitlessly sourced by a Limitless Source--and that includes our creativity! What is true about God is absolutely true about us, so we are saturated NOW with the magnificent artistry of the Universe Itself! We create from that, and yes, we are the ways in which God “shows up” in the world.

All month, we’ve been talking about how important a life of play and rest is for our healthiness, both inside and out. There’s another dimension, though – play helps us to build relationships filled with Joy and meaning. Sometimes the brave path isn't always the easy path. It's standing in the fire of life and continuing on. People say that bravery is feeling the fear and doing it anyway. I think it is that but it is also a courageous and quiet path sometimes. Glennon Doyle, in her book "Untamed," says, “Bravery means living from the inside out. In the stillness and surrender is time to pause, peruse, and plan the next descent and ascent, moving from glory to glory as we take in what we have become through this journey. When learning a new skill or undertaking an adventure, a critical step is sitting at the plateau to assimilate and integrate our experiences before finding “what’s next.” In this quiet space is time for deepening, steeping in the experience... the joyful expectancy of knowing we still stand on the shoulders of those who came before and we are their dreams fulfilled.

The journey comes to an end, but we know that is simply the beginning of another cycle and year. At each solstice is a stillness, a few days’ pause between the dwindling light and lengthening days to follow (or vice versa in the Southern Hemisphere). This is a time to sit and be with ourselves right where we are, listening to the still small voice as it speaks, giving ourselves over to the mystery.
Surrender is an active verb and requires a conscious choice to move from control into relaxing into the Order of the Divine. We surrender, not into chaos, but into Order.

After reading this at 5:00 am, a prayer downloaded into my brain. So, I am sharing it with you:
There is only One: One Mind, one Source back of all, one Power, one Devine Intelligence, one God, one Creator. It created me and you - whole, perfect, and complete.
It is in, as, and through each one of us. You and I are one with the One.
We are worthy and enough. We deserve the very highest and best that the Universe has to offer…just because we were born. Love, Peace, Wisdom, Perfect Health, Prosperity, Serenity, Abundance, Possibility, Joy, and Grace are our birthright. This is the Truth of you and me.
I am so grateful for the knowledge of this Truth. I am thankful that the time has come for each of us to express our PRIDE in being exactly who we are… our authentic self.
As my heart is bursting with PRIDE and love, I release these words into the Law. I step into YES and I let it be, knowing it is already so. And so it is!

Speaking on The Miracles of Our Sacred Yes, this Sunday is Rev. Champion Fleming, whose powerful description has me very intrigued and excited:
‘Saying yes to the Divine, and to your own divinity, cultivates a consciousness of possibility that allows the Magnificence of Spirit to flow into your life and experience. We often call this a miracle. Living into our Oneness with the Divine, we see more and more miracles as we learn to release the doubts, anxieties, and fears that can neutralize our sacred yes. Join us as we explore boldly declaring a new intention that welcomes miracles into our everyday lives.’
It is no secret that I have been pursuing this thing called Possibility, for several years now. Perhaps the explanation for my lack of success may reside in the description of Rev. Champion’s talk. Also…I have never considered the idea that Possibility and miracles are linked. There is no doubt where I will be hanging out, frantically taking notes, on Sunday morning.
This week, we welcome our wonderful musician, Ranj Singh, with open arms (which, I am happy to say, is becoming more and more acceptable). Ranj is a talented artist, whose rich vocals and insightful lyrics expand our hearts. He makes music with a distinct Indian-Western flair that draws on his love for rock music and heartfelt lyrics. He refers to his unique blend of music as “Indo-Canadian Folk.”

Last week, through a series of enjoyable, but non-routine events, I missed the Sunday Gathering which always grounds me with beautiful music, a mind-clearing meditation, uplifting affirmative prayers, and a message from our amazing Spiritual Director that moves my heart and feeds my soul. On Tuesday, I missed the calming meditation provided by our wonderful practitioners. Also, I could not make it to our supportive community meetups in the park. Finally, the high temperatures have been too uncomfortable for me to take my gratitude walks in nature. It appears that, just like missing my physical exercise, or healthy eating regime, without my daily spiritual practices, I feel sluggish and unmotivated – life, with a small L, seemed to be conspiring with my ego to drown out that still, small voice which knows my highest and best self.
As Rev. Cassandra Rae describes her talk for this Sunday, I hunch it is exactly what I need to Align with Yes:
‘Your attention and intention have great power. The ego loves using this power for its own benefit. However, when you make a commitment to spiritual living, it is wise to begin listening to the whispers of your heart and soul. The Divine is offering you the clarity that leads to your greatest fulfillment. Are you ready to listen to the wisdom within you?’
After reading this description of Rev. Cassandra Rae’s upcoming talk, Begin with Yes, I need to take a moment to release my initial habit of judging myself and replace that urge with this beautiful reminder to refocus on the whisper of my heart and soul…Deep calming breath…my shoulders just relaxed and lowered, my heart rate slowed, my eyebrows unfurled, and a half-smile of acceptance formed on my face. Yes.
Note to self: A reminder is not a trigger for me to judge my failures. Whether it is my social, emotional, intellectual, physical, nutritional, creative, or spiritual wellbeing, a reminder is another opportunity to encourage and reinforce my continued growth…Mmmmm, focus on the whisper.

For the final piece in our June theme, The Soul’s Call, we are blessed to welcome as speaker our very own Minister of Organizational Development, Rev. Champion Fleming with their topic, The Humility of Liberation:

Since they joined our leadership in January, I have come to value, appreciate, and admire Rev. Champion’s methods, guidance, and insights. Appearing as our presider, guiding us in meditation, or as our speaker in January, I have enjoyed their soothing and paced conversational tone, their unique and astute expressions, and their unexpected gift of humour.
Rev. Champion has been instrumental in helping me join the 21st century. Early in 2021, I attended a webinar on diversity inclusion presided over by Rev. Champion and I was gobsmacked to realize that ‘they’ and ‘them’ have been used for hundreds of years to describe individuals and, in fact, I had been using these pronouns for individuals all my life! Instantaneously, this realization vaporized any grammatical resistance I harboured around using they/them for individuals. How incredibly grateful I am to Rev. Champion for guiding me in the use of inclusive language. For I know this is how we create a loving, vibrant world that works for all.

The evolutionary leap of this radical love calls us to reach out and love another. This is the Be-Loved community in action!’
The brilliance of this description of Rev. Cassandra Rae’s talk for this Sunday, What’s Evolution Without Love?, is not lost on me. In my six years with CSL White Rock, my spiritual growth around Love has instilled in me such joy. And as I have opened myself up to loving others, I have experienced my self-judgment diminish and my self-love beginning to flourish.
Interestingly, while my love of nature has always given me explicit pleasure…except snakes, whose sudden rustling on the trail can send me leaping in the opposite direction and mosquitos, for obvious reasons. Is there a connection? Because. as my love for others has grown, my love of nature has soared. True story: a couple of weeks ago, I stopped dead-in-my-tracks as a 2-foot long snake crossed my path. I wondered if the sharp gravel was scraping its underbelly. I marveled in awe at the beauty of its design and colour. My life-long fear and loathing had been replaced by admiration and wonder. As for mosquitos, yes, they are also God’s creatures, but is it wrong to carry insect repellant? Hmmm.

Individually and collectively, we must dive deeply into areas we tend to shy away from. Within the path of unconditional happiness, there is space for discomfort and what it is teaching us - even when it’s uncomfortable.’
This description of Rev. Cassandra Rae’s talk this week, Lean into the Discomfort, instills in me the importance of the necessary work ahead.
My limiting belief that pain is bad has cost me a lot. I know that avoiding pain takes a great deal of effort; energy spent avoiding pain saps my strength; I can never let my guard down or the pain is headed right back towards me; and, worst of all, in making detours around pain, I have missed countless adventures. Just think of the lifetime of choices that I have made in the avoidance of pain. My ‘it’s-about-time-plan’ is to release this limiting belief and it starts with me leaning into the discomfort on Sunday.

I admire our incredible Spiritual Director, Rev. Cassandra Rae, for her courage, compassion, and willingness to serve up the difficult topics. If the title for this week’s talk, Pushed by Pain, was a Netflix movie title, I would skim right past it. That is until I read Rev. Cassandra’s talk intro:
‘Suppose we didn’t deny or avoid pain, but rather embraced it as an invitation to higher consciousness, deeper love, and the opportunity to be more resolute to faith in action. This week we explore pain as fertilizer, recognizing pain is not punishment, and the journey through pain can be a pathway to joy!’

I vividly remember my first Sunday at CSL White Rock, 6 years ago. It was the first time I learned that I am not a human being on a spiritual journey - I am Spirit having a human experience. In that moment, I was stupefied and elated! Clearly, this was the explanation for the conundrum I had often debated with others: If God is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good, and everywhere, how can evil exist? As Spirits, we embody our human form and, as humans, we have free will. Free will, a gift from our Creator. Free will to choose our path.
This Sunday, the ever-eloquent and always-compassionate Rev. Cassandra Rae in her talk, The Path Less Travelled, was enlighten, inform, and inspired us on our path. She explained:
"As we say yes to our evolutionary journey, we take the path less travelled, assured that we will be transformed by it. The vision continues to unfold, and the path is revealed with each step. ‘What beliefs, ideas, and actions must we embrace, embody, and become to live in alignment with Spirit’s Highest Vision for our lives? Embracing these things brings us into the realization of the Vision. Following that inner voice of wisdom might lead you into change, but it also leads you into your greatest fulfillment.’ This uplifting description of Sunday’s talk, With Open Arms, by Rev. Cassandra Rae, churns up such positive images of possibilities for me.
Our March theme of Open to Possibilities is continually stoking my heart and mind towards recognizing beliefs that have long been warehoused in my obstinate mind and that no longer serve me. I am somewhat pleased to report that I was aided in locating a few beliefs this week with the help of a personal conflict. How grateful I am for the brilliant metaphors shared with us by Rev. Cassandra in last week’s message! The trapeze image, of the space in between the releasing of one bar and reaching for the next, provided me with an alternative reaction and behaviour. This idea allowed time for me to adjust and embrace the new belief and to honour what I was feeling at that moment.
Now, being the tenacious human that I am, I acknowledge my need to remain suspended in this space may require a more lengthy stay than for most. Living in the question, embracing what Spirit wants for me is somewhat exhausting as I listen for that still, small voice of Truth. The encouraging news is that I can already sense an authentic shift in my thinking - which is cause for celebration.
Another cause for celebration this week is the return of Ranj Singh providing his own amazing brand of moving, soothing live music! Ranj makes music with a distinct Indian-Western flair that draws on the singer-songwriter and self-taught guitarist’s love for rock music and heartfelt lyrics. How thankful I am that the entire month of March is dedicated to the theme Open to Possibilities. As Rev. Cassandra Rae introduces this week's talk, Release and Let Go, she explains:
“Rev. Michael Beckwith says that 100% of spiritual growth is in the letting go. Releasing and letting go of ideas, beliefs, and attachments that no longer serve creates openness and spaciousness. It removes obstacles and impediments in the way of living the Vision. Releasing and embracing are where our work lies when it comes to manifesting the Spirit’s Highest Vision for your life.”
Clearly, this is important work. I fully grasp how the results of releasing beliefs that no longer serve me and embracing possibilities will greatly enhance my spiritual growth. Yet, how can I recognize those ingrained beliefs that I’ve carried for decades? As I write this, I am criticizing myself for not internalizing all the fantastic spiritual truth I am learning fast enough. This, I see, is a belief that I must release and replace with something far more compassionate and kind to myself – something that serves me. Oh, how grateful I am that I can re-watch each of Rev. Cassandra’s deeply inspiring videos as often as I need, at my own leisure.
And I am so grateful for all opportunities to enjoy the live music of this week’s musician, Nathen Aswell! His positive, upbeat, heart-centered music and message never fail to lift my spirit. He believes that his calling in this life is to encourage people to live Big Lives one Small Step at a time. I loved his romantic story of love-during-Covid and congratulate him and his wife on their recent marriage! He invited her to our Sunday Gathering as well. I’m sure that I am not the only fan who would love to meet his amazing partner! This Sunday we are so excited to welcome Rev. Dr. Victoria Bomberry as our guest speaker who will provide us with the final installment of our February focus on forgiveness. With her talk, Journey to Freedom, she explains,
‘Freedom is intimately bound to responsibility. There can be no freedom without a shared responsibility for one another and for ourselves. Freedom is dependent upon the basic human rights of each person to live with dignity and respect. Forgiveness allows us to move beyond the chains that have bound us and live in a way that cultivates freedom for all.'
Freedom…such a delicious word! This month, the forgiveness work I have been following with Rev. Cassandra Rae’s sharing of ‘the four-fold path of forgiveness’ has made clear for me that I have been settling for a ‘veneer of peace’ for seven long months. This explains my off-the-chart cravings for comfort food and the heaviness of my heart. Sigh. I can see how I tricked myself into believing that this veneer was the genuine article.
The agonizing letter that I buried 7 months ago is beginning to affect my health and embarking along the path of genuine forgiveness towards Peace is the answer. Yet, I am as excited about the deep work required for this journey as I would be for impending major dental surgery. Deep breath. Yup, putting on my big-girl pants, I step onto the necessarily arduous path of forgiveness towards Peace and Freedom.

This week our talk is entitled One Mind, Infinite Connections. Rev. Cassandra Rae explains, 'Our shared humanity is an expression of our divinity and our interconnectedness is a reflection of our oneness. We must open our hearts to each other knowing that our connection has the power to be an avenue for harmony, healing, and ultimately love. Let us walk the fourfold path of forgiveness because it opens the door of peace within ourselves and the world.'
This month’s important focus on forgiveness has been a challenge for me. Last week, in my attempts to follow the steps Rev. Cassandra outlined of telling the story and naming the hurt, I dug up a hostile letter I received, which I had left buried for 7 months, and decided to name the hurt. I guess I’m not surprised to discover that I am ill-equipped to name the hurt. Clearly, more work is needed here. Even so, my thinking has shifted towards recognizing this agonizing letter as a gift that has set me on a path towards my highest and best. I LOVE this part! Opening the door of peace is my quest…and I'm so blessed how the story turned out!

‘While there might be times in your life when you break, you aren’t broken. In fact, the very essence of you can never be harmed. And yet, as humans how do we reconcile this spiritual truth with our very personal experiences of hurts, trauma, and pain? Join us as we explore the fourfold path of forgiveness as a way to feel the truth of our wholeness.’
This description of Rev. Cassandra Rae’s talk for this Sunday, The Infinite Invisible, conjures up remembrance of past hurts, trauma, and pain and the accompanying heaviness which lingers far too long. Looking back, I see that each painful event left me wiser, more compassionate, and more convinced of my strength and ability to survive - not broken.
For the past 6 years, I have been absorbing the spiritual principles and practices of the philosophy that we follow in Science of Mind. I am learning that the benefits, which I gained through difficult times, came at a high cost to me. Yes, each experience left me wiser…but also more cautious, more careful, and added to the protective brick wall that I have been constructing around my heart for decades. I am more compassionate for others, but compassion for myself is slight. My strength is formidable and highly protective of my vulnerability, which serves to keep others from becoming close.
Knowing and trusting the unique ability Rev. Cassandra has of infusing her wisdom and insight directly into my heart and mind, I anticipate that her topic this week and the fourfold path of forgiveness will guide me to embracing the truth of my wholeness. The exhilarating thought of dismantling the protective wall around my heart, I admit, is accompanied by much trepidation. However, the timing couldn’t be more perfect – just in time for Valentine’s Day.

There is a natural human tendency to judge, criticize, blame, and shame people who cause harm. In the world right now there are a lot of harms coming into the light. Individually and collectively we are at a choice point: Will we retaliate or reconnect? In The Book of Forgiving Desmond Tutu and Mpho Tutu teach us that we can choose forgiveness instead of retaliation; we can choose to heal instead of harm.
In this book, the authors provide you with activities to bring forgiveness into your heart and life. At the end of chapter 1 on page 29 they assign the activity called “Carrying the Stone.” Essentially you carry a palm-sized stone in your non-dominant hand for an entire morning about six hours! Don’t set it down for any reason during this time.
Then they provide you with some questions for reflection: What did you notice about carrying the stone? Did it hinder any of your activities? Was it ever useful? In what ways was carrying the stone like carrying an unforgiven hurt? Finally, make a list of the people you need to forgive in your life and make another list of all those you would like to have forgive you.

"This Sunday, I was talking about "Looking Above" as a metaphor for taking your eyes off of all the complaints you might have and being willing to see the essential goodness in everyone including yourself. I was using chapter 9 in Radical Compassion by Tara Brach called "Seeing the Goodness."
So often we get stuck in looking at the surface of people and personalities. However, underneath it all is the basic goodness, the wholeness that everyone shares in common. Let's explore:
How can mindfulness and the willingness to look for the basic goodness in people change how we connect with one another?

Are you living from compassion satisfaction or compassion fatigue? As spiritually minded humans with an inherently loving nature we often give, help, support our family and community with ease. Sometimes we extend ourselves beyond our capacity which results in burnout or resentment. Divine Love is the perfect balm. It is limitless, always available, and the most radical way to restore us to the radiance of our being so we can continue to live as compassion in action.
Our guest speaker, Rev. Champion Fleming (they/them) is an organizational development consultant and leadership coach working with national non-profits and labor unions who are committed to anti-racist strategies that lead to cultural and political change. Champion has worked for decades on LGBTQIA issues, AIDS awareness, poverty, and racism. They have been in service as a practitioner and minister in training at CSL, Davis in Davis, California, and the East Bay Church of Religious Science in Oakland, CA.

This week in her talk, Here and Now, Rev. Cassandra Rae explains,
‘One of your superpowers is your presence. When you bring your conscious awareness to what’s unfolding in this present moment, then you can choose how to respond. I LOVE superpowers! The truth and beauty of becoming aware, ‘interrupting years of habitual reactions,’ and creating the me I have always longed to be is simply delicious. Until now, self-criticism, self-condemnation, and self-judgment were the most utilized tools in my self-improvement tool kit. I am intrigued, excited, and hope-filled to hear Rev. Cassandra’s inspired wisdom and insights on this life-altering Truth.
The idea of effectively ‘spring cleaning’ the hordes of self-limiting beliefs that I have acquired in my life lifts my spirit. Further, how awe-inspiring to realize that it is never too late! I am so grateful for attracting Rev. Cassandra into my life; clearly, one of her many superpowers is revealing the Truth

CSL White Rock, Rev. Over the last few weeks, this was demonstrated for me, again.
Taught from childhood that asking for help was a sign of weakness, it was extremely difficult for me to reach out to my community and ask for them to hold my brother, who was in the hospital with a 50% chance of survival, in their hearts, thoughts, and prayers.
It brings tears to my eyes to share the wonderful gift of Love and support that flowed from them to my brother, who is expected to be released from the hospital today, and to me.

Rev. Cassandra has a brilliant way of introducing the Truth in refreshingly bite-sized pieces that make perfect sense. Over the last 13 months, I am so grateful to have had the guidance of Rev. Cassandra in helping me to release my limiting beliefs, to embrace the darkness within me, and to survive a pandemic in good spirits. I am eager to hear her fresh perspective on Learning to Love Yourself!

My heart is charged with excitement for our Winter Solstice – Christmas Celebration on Sunday evening! For her talk, Celebrating Light, Rev. Cassandra Rae describes this event:
‘Arriving at the winter solstice, we come together to release that which is complete and to celebrate the rebirth of light emerging from the darkness. In this new spaciousness, we explore: What does the Light want to be in you this coming year? Join us for a candle lighting Winter Solstice Ritual with fantastic live music!’
I love that I continue to discover my limiting beliefs and the blatant errors they contain; case in point - light is good, …darkness not-so-much. And yet, of the highlighted celebrations throughout my childhood, from January to December each year, the most highly anticipated, thrilling, joyful, AND memorable events required darkness: New Year’s Eve, Canada Day fireworks, drive-in movies, sunsets, stargazing, campfires, Halloween, and Christmas. My spiritual practice, in recent years, rejoices at celebrating the Summer and Winter Solstice. I find my life enriched as I learn to embrace both light and dark and to release that which no longer serves me.
In addition to Rev. Cassandra’s brightness and inspiration, we are so thrilled to welcome two brilliant musicians – playing for the first time at CSL White Rock, Lauri Jones and Eric Montgomery!
Lauri Jones has an amazingly diverse professional background in theatre; cruise ships; jazz, pop, and dance bands; and as back-up singer on a variety of major label recordings. For several years, Lauri’s music has reflected her deepening spirituality. Lauri has enjoyed sharing her music in spiritual centers and a variety of other venues, conferences, and retreats in the greater Pacific Northwest and beyond.

I remember being told the story of The Optimist and The Pessimist. Scientists took two young children and studied their responses. One was placed in a room filled with an astonishing assortment of toys and was observed sitting sullenly for the entire hour. The other was put in a room filled with manure and was observed laughing and cavorting about for the duration. When interviewed, the former subject complained of the admonishment they would have received if toys were damaged during play. The latter explained that with so much manure there must have been a horse in there somewhere.
As she describes this week’s talk, Preparing the Way, I have a solid hunch within which of these categories our blessed Rev. Cassandra Rae resides:

Our speaker this week, Tamara Rossander, describes herself as a long-time, self-help junkie. When she found the Centre for Spiritual Living White Rock in 2010, she immediately felt at home. I deeply identify with this experience and marvel at how she continued seeking the Truth through classes and training and became a Religious Science Practitioner. One might never suspect that, in addition to her busy life and the endless generosity of time, talent, treasure, and love that she gives joyfully to our Centre, Tamara somehow manages to continue her dedicated studies towards becoming a licensed minister.
I am in awe of her dedication and I look forward to learning how she manages all this so joyfully, in her talk this Sunday, The Grateful and Cheerful Receiver. Tamara Rossander writes,
‘Often people reference being a cheerful giver, but as we know from the Law of Circulation, giving and receiving is a reciprocal ebb and flow of Yin and Yang. When we accept, we are in the flow as God gives to ItSelf as each of Its incarnating forms.’

The very first day I attended a Sunday Gathering at CSL White Rock, six years ago, I knew I had found ‘the Thing’ I had been seeking for three decades. For as long as I can remember, I always believed in God; I just could not reconcile my understanding of an unconditionally loving God with the wrathful, vengeful, angry, punitive, judgmental God, about Whom I was being force-fed.
The joy I get now, from knowing the Truth of God and the truth of who I am, fills my days. I organize my life around learning and understanding the Truth: attending Sunday Gatherings, workshops, courses; reading books, and expanding my spiritual practice. My joy is immeasurable – even during this time of Covid-19.
While I continue to learn and grow my spiritual practice based on the spiritual principles I have embraced – Love, Peace, Perfect Health, Wisdom, Abundance, Grace, and Joy, I must confess that I still carry residual guilt around the idea of Prosperity and whether or not I am worthy of this. So, Rev. Cassandra Rae’s Sunday talk guided me in releasing my self-limiting beliefs around Prosperity.
Rev. Cassandra writes, ‘We live in an abundantly rich Universe. And yet, how does that translate into our personal experience? We believe that the source of financial health and prosperity come from within and that each one of us can tap into it. Join us as we explore the foundational principles that empower our prosperity!’

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend! CSL White Rock is blessed with Amazing Practitioners! You may notice that I seldom mention the word Practitioner without preceding it with a descriptive adjective: incredible, fantastic, fabulous, wonderful, magnificent, marvelous...Why is that, you may ask?
Well, aside from their dedication to years and endless hours of study and training to become Licensed Practitioners; aside from their unending, selfless, service to our Centre; aside from their personal and generous tithing, back to our Centre, of their time, talent, and treasure; aside from their soul-enriching meditations and affirmative prayers for our members; aside from their community-supporting meetups; aside from their continuous ‚‘Yes!‘ to all requests to actively support, run, and participate in fundraisers; aside from their dedication as facilitators, presiders, and greeters in all manner of functions, in person and online; and everything else of which I am unaware of their other works of heart and soul...well...
As a member of the Board of Trustees for the past four years, I know that none of our out-going payments, except for classes that they may offer and teach, goes to our Unbelievably, Incredible Practitioners. I have more questions than answers about the generosity, dedication, and love these Precious Practitioners gift to us.

Where We Go When We Die...?!!! Prior to 6 years ago, I understood the two places where 'good' and 'bad' people go - and they both start with the letter 'H.' In 2014, my understanding of Where We Go When We Die shifted entirely when I began attending the Centre for Spiritual Living White Rock. We are approaching the one-year mark since our wonderfully insightful, deeply compassionate, and profoundly thinking Spiritual Director, Reverend Cassandra Rae, joined our CSL White Rock family. She fearlessly dives into topics outside of my comfort zone. Although my trust in her ability to handle this tender topic is unshakeable, I do intend to have my 'blankey' nearby.
Listening to the passionate, heart-centered, authentic message of Rev. Cassandra is always an uplifting experience. With summoned courage and deep intrigue, I had a chance to find out Where We Go When We Die.

I like to remind myself, 'Age does not define me.' It bears repeating and I like the sound of it. My emotional high, when I tried paddleboarding for the first time in my life this summer, lasted for weeks. Although it means I miss our Practitioner Guided Meditations...(sigh), my Wednesday morning line-dancing class never fails to lift my spirit. Sadly, Covid-19 did shut down my weekly pool volleyball game and I am confident that in the not-too-distant future, I can add this back into my schedule. Retirement has gifted me with the time I need to begin imagining all the possibilities: what do you think...is there a senior's rate for ziplining?
I am excited to hear Rev. Cassandra Rae's always-thoughtful, always-inspired ideas on this 'hot' topic, as she delves into COLLABORATING WITH AGING. She asks:

Sunday is Grandparent’s Day! On a California vacation, almost 5 decades ago, I met a couple who reported that 'Grandparenting is the best club in the world!' Today, my blessings are vast and top of the list are my 3 Grandchildren: Violet, 12, enrolled in high school this week!!! Theoren, 11, started grade 7, and Harlo, 9, began grade 5! Just thinking of them brightens my day and a phone call from them feels like winning the lottery!
As is her practice, Rev. Cassandra has chosen a timely topic for Grandparent's Day: CREATIVE ENGAGEMENT ACROSS GENERATIONS. On this she writes, 'Parker Palmer says, “When young and old are connected like the poles of a battery, the power that’s released enlivens both parties and helps light up the world.” Joining the generations is sacred for old and young alike. What can we learn when we creatively engage across the ages?'

Rev. Karen is returning to us from Snohomish County, the place, we learned last June, where the proliferation of 'antique shops is of no interest to looters.' Yes, Rev. Karen's humour is understated and ever-present, along with her amazingly thoughtful, introspective thinking.

In the past, my incredibly limited understanding of self-care meant three shamefully decadent and time-wasting behaviors: a visit to the hairdresser; polishing my nails; and a candle-lit, scented soak in the tub. Self-care translated to me as selfish. For the past 10 months, with Rev. Cassandra as my-self-proclaimed-mentor-in-all-things-self-care, I recognize how very limiting and harmful my beliefs were – not only to myself but to those I love around me.
‘Life has many demands. Schedules can be very full. And yet, if we don't take the time to fill our cup, then we might find ourselves consistently running on empty. This week we continue our deep dive into Everyday Ubuntu: Living Better Together, the African Way by Mungi Ngomanewhere we examine the connection between caring for the self and caring for others. How you treat yourself is the foundation for how you treat others just like how you treat others will impact how you feel about yourself.

Last September, I picked up Reverend Doug Craig at the Abbotsford Airport and was fortunate enough to have him as a guest for two high-energy, fascinating days of non-stop conversation. His in-person talk in our CSL White Rock hall, ‘Living Your Heart’s Desire,’ was so popular that it resulted in his workshop, ‘Moving Forward,’ to be full of intrigued, furiously-note-taking fans.
In fact, I still refer to Rev. Doug’s ‘Tool Kit’ on my cellphone’s note-taking app. I was in awe to know that he was flying home to Calgary to prepare for his incredibly booked-up Christmas season career as a professional Santa Claus. His life and stories are so rich in experiences and intriguing that I know I will be first in line to purchase his book - should he ever decide to write one.
I encourage you to listen to his insight, wisdom, and candid truth with great interest and enthusiasm – pen and notepaper ready. I encourage you to make time for his talk ... and you may want to take notes. How thankful I am that we now record all our talks so we can serve you better.

We are absolutely thrilled this week to welcome back Rev. Dr. Nadene Rogers. For those of us who remember, Rev. Nadene took the hold of the reigns of CSL White Rock, as our Interim Minister, in January of last year. From January to October of 2019, Rev. Nadene whipped our flagging minister-less Leadership and Centre into one worthy of acquiring a suitable Senior Minister to guide us. I am so grateful for this powerful, poised, and professional leader because without her we would never have attracted the right and perfect Spiritual Director, our very own Rev. Cassandra Rae, who inspires us and grows our Centre with such insight, heart, and wisdom. We are so blessed!
Speaking on The Tao of Freedom, Rev. Nadene says, ‘Eastern and Western faith traditions speak to the concept of freedom. When we weave these concepts together, we become more aware of the “self” in order to release the self. This is the common path we all must travel, to live from our divine humanity. Within an ever-evolving sense of self, a constant innate desire to be free remains active. As we ‘include and transcend’ through the art of acceptance and the act of self-determination, we are freed.’
