Our podcast is a place to hear and listen to the stories of redemption that are playing out in our community, city, and world. You will hear from people that are a part of our community of faith and just members of the community. We believe everyone has a story to tell and we need to hear it.

Rather than treating fear as a failure of faith, this message names it as deeply human, and explores how trust isn't the absence of fear but the courage to keep showing up anyway. This past week, we explored the ancient practice of a Rule of Life not as a rigid set of laws, but as a trellis to support our spiritual growth. This week we read from Matthew 10 where Jesus sends his disciples on a missionary journey. Jesus sends them dependent upon the hospitality of others. They had to learn to ask for what they needed.
We talked a lot this Sunday about the value of naming what we need and asking for help. It seems somewhat counterintuitive to name our needs but when we have the courage to name them to others we experience a deep and profound joy because it reveals to others how they might help and love us better.

We can sometimes live by platitudes that we hope to be true but aren't, such as we can have deep compassion for others while not having compassion for ourselves.
Compassion is a recognition of our common humanity and that each of our stories is made of strength and struggle. And I depth of compassion and honor of our own stories of strength and struggle are the very elements that connect us with others.

Jesus tells his disciples in the gospel of Matthew that they are the light of the world. They are the light in the midst of darkness. When we think about our world and all the injustices that exist it can be... disheartening. And our response can be to become despondent and numb. Because being a light to a dark world means being vulnerable... the willingness to take a risk and be frustrated. Behind every great pursuit of justice is a road paved with pain, loss, and frustrations and that is the journey Jesus is inviting us on. What does Jesus do first in Matthew? Teach his disciples. And in his teachings, he reminds them that the way ahead is arduous and difficult but not without a blessing. Sometimes it might feel when life is hard that we somehow deserved the difficulty. But we are reminded today... that life in general... is challenging. It is in the hard moments of life, and only in those moments that we discover the gift of resilience. This is the second week in our series "Benediction".
This week we will be talking about the value of anger. Brene Brown says, "Anger, in response to experiencing or witnessing injustice, pain, and struggle, can be a powerful catalyst for change." Anger is an emotion that we all experience. But there is a lot of shame around anger as an emotion we shouldn't feel. Especially as people who follow Christ who we identify as the gentle and loving savior. A constructed image that forsakes the stories of Jesus getting angry at his disciples and flipping tables. He was a human who experienced human emotions.

What do you need? Naming what we need can be a very difficult task. Maybe because we don’t want to burden someone with our problems or because we carry shame and guilt about our needs. We can’t help one another if we aren’t able to articulate what it is we need. This week we will be talking about how we might find the courage to name what we need. And that on the other side we might create space to help to hold and carry one another’s needs.

Have you ever thought to yourself that if someone could just walk a mile in my shoes, they would know what it feels like to live in my skin? Maybe if we did such a thing we would treat one another and ourselves with more kindness. This Sunday we will be reading from Luke 15 where Jesus is questioned by religious leaders as to why he breaks bread with those that they deem unclean and far off from God. This Sunday we talk about the value of commitment. In this post-pandemic world sticking to your commitments isn't of much value. People just don't show up for work. Emails. Texts go unresponded.
Good luck trying to schedule something with someone... you have to be persistent in your communication amid cancellations.
We are all in some ways "keeping our options open". We don't want to be nailed down to something. We are always "interested."
What does this thing commitment look like in this new world? Somehow this word commitment has become a bad word... but I think being committed to something... actually brings about value, purpose, and belonging.

This Sunday Amy shared her story about how the community has helped her discover her worth in the simplest of ways by offering their presence.
Can you imagine a world where you used to go places without a cell phone? If you look around at airports, coffee shops, workplaces, groceries stores, and on it goes you will find people looking and scrolling on their phones. We are constantly bombarded by unending notifications. This Sunday we will talk about how might be attentive and present in a world that is constantly distracted. A world that equates worth to productivity.
Hope we might discover some next steps together in being more hospitable in the midst of many distractions.
God is often found in the most unlikely of places and people. We so often build monolithic communities of people who look like us, talk like us, and share the same ideological perspectives as us... but the revelation (one of many) of this story might be that our salvation is held with those who are often in the margins of our lives, whose experiences and understanding of the world are different than us. Looking forward to diving deeper into this story Sunday.
Today we are focusing on the events of overturning Roe v. Wade and reflecting from a feminist, scriptural perspective on reproductive rights and abortion.
Prayer by Laura Truman God, We’re so tired.
We want to do justice, but the work feels endless, and the results look so small in our exhausted hands.
We want to love mercy, but our enemies are relentless, and it feels like foolishness to prioritize gentleness in this unbelievably cruel world.
We want to walk humbly, but self-promotion is seductive, and we are afraid that if we don’t look after ourselves, no one else will.
We want to be kind, but our anger feels insatiable.
Jesus, in this never-ending wilderness, come to us and grant us grace.
Grant us the courage to keep showing up to impossible battles, trusting that it is our commitment to faithfulness, and not our obsession with results, that will bring in Your shalom.
Grant us the vulnerability to risk loving our difficult and complicated neighbour, rejecting the lie that some people are made more in the image of God than others.
Grant us the humility of a de-centred but Beloved self.
As we continue to take the single step that is in front of us, Jesus, keep us from becoming what we are called to transform.
Protect us from using the empire’s violence—in our words, in our theology, in our activism, and in our politics—for Your kingdom of peace.
Keep our anger from becoming meanness.
Keep our sorrow from collapsing into self-pity.
Keep our hearts soft enough to keep breaking.
Keep our outrage turned towards justice, not cruelty.
Remind us that all of this, every bit of it, is for love.
Keep us fiercely kind.

Today our friend Gary leads us through the value of acknowledging and being aware of our pain and guilt as a critical step in experiencing God's love.
This Sunday we talked about the events of these past few weeks involving the murder of children and adults with legally purchased Assault Rifles. We talked about our sense of hopelessness that things would change. In the midst of this hopelessness, we recognize that God still has called us to be about the work of restoration and wholeness even when the path seems bleak. We ended with a prayer to carry with us this week.
Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our brothers and sisters throughout the world, who live and die in poverty and pain. Give them today, through our hands, their daily bread and through our understanding love, give peace and joy. Amen

This week the call was to embrace the way of Mary Magdalene. The resurrection of Jesus was made real in her loss and in her grief.
As people seek to get back to "normal"... we are tempted to forget how this year has deeply impacted each of us.
We have collectively lost a lot.
It seems ironic to talk about out loss... when we are talking about resurrection and move forward. But that's just it! Faceing what we loss, being honest with ourselves... leads us to a more hopeful future... that gives us much clarity at our next steps.
Part of this sermon came from a question my (Jason) counselor asked a few months ago.
