Storied Church

Our podcast is a place to hear and listen to the stories of redemption that are playing out in our community, city, and world. You will hear from people that are a part of our community of faith and just members of the community. We believe everyone has a story to tell and we need to hear it.

This Sunday, we dive into the storm-tossed waters of Matthew's gospel—Jesus asleep in the boat, Peter sinking as he walks toward Jesus on the waves—to ask an honest question: what do we do with our fear? Rather than treating fear as a failure of faith, this message names it as deeply human, and explores how trust isn't the absence of fear but the courage to keep showing up anyway. With a tender story about teaching a daughter to ride her first bike, we find a path toward authenticity, community, and the kind of faith that gets back in the boat.Find out more about Storied Church @ STORIEDCHURCH.orgTO GIVE storiedchurch.org/giveJOIN SC DISCORD: https://discord.gg/MdqSpQPxkHJOIN OUR LISTSERVE: storiedchurch.org/connectinstagram.com/storiedchurchfacebook.com/storiedchurch

This past week, we explored the ancient practice of a Rule of Life not as a rigid set of laws, but as a trellis to support our spiritual growth. Drawing from Jesus’ own rhythm of service and withdrawal in Luke 5, we discussed how to create intentional patterns around the Spiritual, Self, and Others. Rather than a self-improvement plan, this "version one" rule is a flexible, attainable invitation to reorient ourselves to the present and stay open to the transformational move of the Holy Spirit as our seasons shift.Rule of Life Resources:https://hullvineyard.co.uk/2026/01/06/rule-of-life/https://parkchurch.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/A-Guide-for-Building-a-Rule-of-Life.pdfFind out more about Storied Church @ STORIEDCHURCH.orgTO GIVE storiedchurch.org/giveJOIN SC DISCORD: https://discord.gg/MdqSpQPxkHJOIN OUR LISTSERVE: storiedchurch.org/connectinstagram.com/storiedchurchfacebook.com/storiedchurch

This week, Leslie Eaves explores the profound idea that "authenticity is protest" and "whimsy is combat" in a world that often feels heavy and overwhelming. Control feels safe, trust sets you free. Our pastoral intern BraQuan Ellis opens up about his lifelong struggle with anxiety and the need to control every outcome, and shares how a car breakdown during his senior year became the moment he learned to truly let go.Walking through Proverbs 3:5-6, BraQuan explores what it means to trust God with all your heart, why control is often just trust in disguise, and practical ways to release the burdens you were never meant to carry alone. We close out our Cultivating Meaningful Relationships series by asking: Does every relationship deserve a spot in your inner circle? Conflict doesn't mean your relationship is broken... it might mean it's real. In week two of our series Cultivating Meaningful Relationships, we dig into why conflict is normal (even healthy!), and why our instinct is often to either push into someone else's space or retreat into silence instead of meeting them with curiosity. This week's sermon offers a different way to handle disagreement — not by winning, but by trading judgment for genuine curiosity about what the other person is feeling and thinking. Plus: a challenge to swap "you" statements for "I" language this week, and get curious the next time conflict shows up.Find out more about Storied Church @ STORIEDCHURCH.orgTO GIVE storiedchurch.org/giveJOIN SC DISCORD: https://discord.gg/MdqSpQPxkHJOIN OUR LISTSERVE: storiedchurch.org/connectinstagram.com/storiedchurchfacebook.com/storiedchurch

What does it mean to know and be known by another person truly? This past Sunday, we explored one of humanity's oldest questions: why do our closest relationships bring both our greatest joy and our deepest pain? Drawing from Genesis, we unpack what it means to be created not for sameness, but for difference and why learning to see the goodness in others (and ourselves) might be the most sacred work we do. Whether you're navigating a complicated friendship, a long-term partnership, or just the loneliness of modern life, this conversation is for you.Find out more about Storied Church @ STORIEDCHURCH.orgTO GIVE storiedchurch.org/giveJOIN SC DISCORD: https://discord.gg/MdqSpQPxkHJOIN OUR LISTSERVE: storiedchurch.org/connectinstagram.com/storiedchurchfacebook.com/storiedchurch

Anxiety is real, and God knows it. Whether it shows up as racing thoughts, sleepless nights, or endless "what ifs," anxiety has a way of weighing us down and convincing us that we have to figure everything out on our own. In this message, we explore what it truly means to cast all your worries on God — not just some of them, not just the spiritual ones, but all of them. Because the promise of 1 Peter 5:7 isn't just that God tolerates your burdens. What do we do with our pain, our failures, and our stories of struggle? In this reflective message, we explore how embracing — rather than avoiding — the hard chapters of our lives is what builds character, endurance, and lasting hope. Drawing from Romans 5 and the real stories shared during Storied Church's 7-year anniversary celebration, this episode reminds us that the moments when shame speaks loudest are often the ones shaping us most. This past Sunday, we invited one another to re-center amid the noise and chaos of our world. As we began the new sermon series “Simple Rules for a Chaotic World,” we reflected on how boundaries, obedience, and accountability shape the way we show up in uncertain times. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be exploring what it means to cultivate simple rules for our lives — to do no harm, do good, and attend to the ordinances of God — as we seek to live with intention, compassion, and grace.Find out more about Storied Church @ STORIEDCHURCH.orgTO GIVE storiedchurch.org/giveJOIN SC DISCORD: https://discord.gg/XuVCyZZ3JOIN OUR LISTSERVE: storiedchurch.org/connectinstagram.com/storiedchurchfacebook.com/storiedchurchYouTube: @storiedchurch921

This past Sunday, we concluded our sermon series on generosity by examining the power of naming our “so that”—the passions that drive us—and taking steps to bring them to life. We look at Jesus’ prayer for God’s kin-dom to come “on earth as it is in heaven” and what it means to pray for tomorrow’s bread today. Together, we imagine a community that mends what is broken, embraces diversity, and embodies hope and generosity in the world.Find out more about Storied Church @ STORIEDCHURCH.orgTO GIVE storiedchurch.org/giveJOIN SC DISCORD: https://discord.gg/XuVCyZZ3JOIN OUR LISTSERVE: storiedchurch.org/connectinstagram.com/storiedchurchfacebook.com/storiedchurchYouTube: @storiedchurch921

Today we continue our "So That" Series" where we dig into what it really means to be generous — not just with money, but with the kind of life we are building. We look honestly at why money makes us uncomfortable, where the idea of “tithing” comes from, and why generosity is about more than just following rules. This Sunday our focus was on finding true meaning and restoration in spiritual practices, rather than just going through religious motions out of guilt or obligation. Drawing from Gospel stories, it argues that spiritual rhythms like Sabbath rest are meant to rejuvenate us and help us experience the Hebrew concept of "tov" - God's desire for our wholeness and vitality. Despite our struggles, God still sees the inherent goodness in our lives. This week we heard the words that Jesus said, "What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light and what you hear whispered proclaim from the rooftops."

We asked the vulnerable question of what we feel is being whispered to us, meaning what God calls us to do with our lives. Is Go calling us to advocate for social justice? Calling us to better our lives? What is it that we fear or is holding us back?

This week we read from Matthew 10 where Jesus sends his disciples on a missionary journey. Jesus sends them dependent upon the hospitality of others. They had to learn to ask for what they needed.

We talked a lot this Sunday about the value of naming what we need and asking for help. It seems somewhat counterintuitive to name our needs but when we have the courage to name them to others we experience a deep and profound joy because it reveals to others how they might help and love us better.

We can sometimes live by platitudes that we hope to be true but aren't, such as we can have deep compassion for others while not having compassion for ourselves.

Compassion is a recognition of our common humanity and that each of our stories is made of strength and struggle. And I depth of compassion and honor of our own stories of strength and struggle are the very elements that connect us with others.

This week we will talk about what it means to to learn the practice of compassion for ourselves so that we might care for others more deeply.

Some of the first words you will find when you open a bible is that humankind shouldn't be alone. And yet we live in a society that is increasingly lonely. God's call to us is to be the people of the community first and foremost. Because vitality and goodness come out of togetherness. A church rooted in the community is needed more than ever in our society. Not tomorrow... but now. This Pentecost Sunday we yet again celebrate the birth of the church. We celebrate this day when God's spirit pours out among us so that others might hear and receive the message of God's mercy, love, forgiveness, and grace. So often our inner voice wonders why others "don't get it" the way we do. But the truth is that often we speak in a way that we might understand. Yet Pentecost God's spirit pours out among people in their native tongue. They hear the beautiful mercies of God in a language they can receive. “This is the day the Lord has made let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Today we talked about how the practice of gratitude is the pathway to joy and being present. Jesus tells his disciples in the gospel of Matthew that they are the light of the world. They are the light in the midst of darkness. When we think about our world and all the injustices that exist it can be... disheartening. And our response can be to become despondent and numb. Because being a light to a dark world means being vulnerable... the willingness to take a risk and be frustrated. Behind every great pursuit of justice is a road paved with pain, loss, and frustrations and that is the journey Jesus is inviting us on. SUNDAY COLLECT:Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. What does Jesus do first in Matthew? Teach his disciples. And in his teachings, he reminds them that the way ahead is arduous and difficult but not without a blessing. Sometimes it might feel when life is hard that we somehow deserved the difficulty. But we are reminded today... that life in general... is challenging. It is in the hard moments of life, and only in those moments that we discover the gift of resilience. This Sunday, we reflected on this past year and how we have grown and evolved as a church. The future looks different than it did maybe a year ago, so we strive as a community to be true to who we are but agile in this ever-changing world.

Tim Woody shared a little bit of his story of how he came to be a part of Storied Church (at the end of the podcast). He shared this quote from Margaret Mead, "Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

This is the fourth and final week in our series "Benediction".

This week we talked about our baptismal identity and carrying confidence in who God created us to be and that we can make a difference in our world.

Each week we dismiss with these words, "May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace."

Anger is no doubt a complicated emotion with many roots... but it is also one that causes us to make the issues in a world personal and to work towards transformative change in our world.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU with discomfort, at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless you with tears, to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain to joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in the world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done, to bring justice and kindness to all our children and the poor. Amen

This is the third week in our series "Benediction".

This is the second week in our series "Benediction".

This week we will be talking about the value of anger. Brene Brown says, "Anger, in response to experiencing or witnessing injustice, pain, and struggle, can be a powerful catalyst for change." Anger is an emotion that we all experience. But there is a lot of shame around anger as an emotion we shouldn't feel. Especially as people who follow Christ who we identify as the gentle and loving savior. A constructed image that forsakes the stories of Jesus getting angry at his disciples and flipping tables. He was a human who experienced human emotions.

This week we started a new series called Benediction. Benediction means to speak well of. They are the words we dismiss with each Sunday and we are invited into this holy work of being co-creators in sowing good in the world.

This week will talk about the gift of discomfort.

Amen

What do you need? Naming what we need can be a very difficult task. Maybe because we don’t want to burden someone with our problems or because we carry shame and guilt about our needs. We can’t help one another if we aren’t able to articulate what it is we need. This week we will be talking about how we might find the courage to name what we need. And that on the other side we might create space to help to hold and carry one another’s needs.

This Sunday we read from the book of Jeremiah. We talked about how Jeremiah was a depressing prophet to read. But this story isn't without hope for the now and the future. Jeremiah reminds us that every day and every moment we have a chance to lean into the beautiful ways of the divine.

Have you ever thought to yourself that if someone could just walk a mile in my shoes, they would know what it feels like to live in my skin? Maybe if we did such a thing we would treat one another and ourselves with more kindness. This Sunday we will be reading from Luke 15 where Jesus is questioned by religious leaders as to why he breaks bread with those that they deem unclean and far off from God. Jesus’ invitation to them is to walk in their shoes. Live in their skin. Feel what it must be like to be them.

This Sunday we talk about the value of commitment. In this post-pandemic world sticking to your commitments isn't of much value. People just don't show up for work. Emails. Texts go unresponded.

Good luck trying to schedule something with someone... you have to be persistent in your communication amid cancellations.

We are all in some ways "keeping our options open". We don't want to be nailed down to something. We are always "interested."

What does this thing commitment look like in this new world? Somehow this word commitment has become a bad word... but I think being committed to something... actually brings about value, purpose, and belonging.

Jesus challenges us to provide space at the table for others. Particularly those in our society we looks past and invites us to bring them to the table. This can be discomforting when our identity is wrapped up in our place at the table and inevitably excludes others from the table.

Can you imagine a world where you used to go places without a cell phone? If you look around at airports, coffee shops, workplaces, groceries stores, and on it goes you will find people looking and scrolling on their phones. We are constantly bombarded by unending notifications. This Sunday we will talk about how might be attentive and present in a world that is constantly distracted. A world that equates worth to productivity.

Hope we might discover some next steps together in being more hospitable in the midst of many distractions.

God is often found in the most unlikely of places and people. We so often build monolithic communities of people who look like us, talk like us, and share the same ideological perspectives as us... but the revelation (one of many) of this story might be that our salvation is held with those who are often in the margins of our lives, whose experiences and understanding of the world are different than us. Looking forward to diving deeper into this story Sunday.

Today we are focusing on the events of overturning Roe v. Wade and reflecting from a feminist, scriptural perspective on reproductive rights and abortion.

Prayer by Laura Truman God, We’re so tired.

We want to do justice, but the work feels endless, and the results look so small in our exhausted hands.

We want to love mercy, but our enemies are relentless, and it feels like foolishness to prioritize gentleness in this unbelievably cruel world.

We want to walk humbly, but self-promotion is seductive, and we are afraid that if we don’t look after ourselves, no one else will.

We want to be kind, but our anger feels insatiable.

Jesus, in this never-ending wilderness, come to us and grant us grace.

Grant us the courage to keep showing up to impossible battles, trusting that it is our commitment to faithfulness, and not our obsession with results, that will bring in Your shalom.

Grant us the vulnerability to risk loving our difficult and complicated neighbour, rejecting the lie that some people are made more in the image of God than others.

Grant us the humility of a de-centred but Beloved self.

As we continue to take the single step that is in front of us, Jesus, keep us from becoming what we are called to transform.

Protect us from using the empire’s violence—in our words, in our theology, in our activism, and in our politics—for Your kingdom of peace.

Keep our anger from becoming meanness.

Keep our sorrow from collapsing into self-pity.

Keep our hearts soft enough to keep breaking.

Keep our outrage turned towards justice, not cruelty.

Remind us that all of this, every bit of it, is for love.

Keep us fiercely kind.

Amen.

This Sunday we talked about the events of these past few weeks involving the murder of children and adults with legally purchased Assault Rifles. We talked about our sense of hopelessness that things would change. In the midst of this hopelessness, we recognize that God still has called us to be about the work of restoration and wholeness even when the path seems bleak. We ended with a prayer to carry with us this week.

Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our brothers and sisters throughout the world, who live and die in poverty and pain. Give them today, through our hands, their daily bread and through our understanding love, give peace and joy. Amen

In this gathering, we talked about the interconnectedness of Sabbath and Social Justice.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.

This week the call was to embrace the way of Mary Magdalene. The resurrection of Jesus was made real in her loss and in her grief.

As people seek to get back to "normal"... we are tempted to forget how this year has deeply impacted each of us.

We have collectively lost a lot.

It seems ironic to talk about out loss... when we are talking about resurrection and move forward. But that's just it! Faceing what we loss, being honest with ourselves... leads us to a more hopeful future... that gives us much clarity at our next steps.

Part of this sermon came from a question my (Jason) counselor asked a few months ago.
