We do a rapid recap of the last few months, reflect on the terrible news out of Israel and Lewiston, and catch up on a grab bag of topics including vaccine shortages and a new superintendent. Dan basks in the glory of his snowfall predictions, Dave preps for seven weeks without any kids in the house this summer, and Dan brings everyone up to speed on Pole Capping. We also ask and answer a few important questions: Why was there a detached head at Dave’s seder? Should Dan have dropped everything and gone to the Arsenal and Liverpool game with Marc Bornstein? Why can't you get married on the intermediate days of Passover? All this, and more, awaits.
E85- There Is Always Another Reason3.20.23Spring has sprung and we’re back for a 45-minute tour de force on the pod. Dan talks about the 5th cup of wine at Passover and how the use of even numbers exposes you to sorcery and demons (according to the Talmud); Dave checks in on the condition of his knees after some late-season skiing and talks about Scarlet Fever and a rare rash; Both guys give a hearty thumbs up to Top Gun: Maverick; Dan pans Creed 3, Dave dreams about opening a new corner market in Auburn thanks to some new zoning regulations on the Androscoggin; Dan dreams of going to the Eras tour. This is a good one- enjoy!
E84- All About The Base1.30.23As we prepare to usher in the Dan and Dave centennial, it’s a mad dash to the finish. Is the prescription antibiotic shortage over? Is there an official school budget in Bedford? Will we be recording this pod in the UK this summer? Will Dave ever finish Fauda? Will Dan get through all of the John Wick movies? Should we do triennial Haftarah readings in addition to triennial Torah readings? Will we ever get to 100 podcasts? Can you win a cup tournament in Israeli soccer without scoring a single goal? So many questions, so little time.

This week we headed outside for a pod in Dave’s sukkah and had a blast talking about jaundice, the stressed supply chain for turkeys, MCAS results, and more. Dave erroneously claims he’s only read 50 books…ever, Dan chimes in with a rabbinic parable about when it’s OK to head inside from your sukkah when it’s raining, and we talk about Derry Girls and FluteGate. Also: the decline of both US national soccer teams, fried dough, and corn mazes.
E78: There Is No End To The Matter 10.3.22
We are back with what is without a doubt the best pod of the year! Well, the year just started, so that’s a low bar, but actually this is one of our favorite ones ever. We start with a little reflection on Rosh Hashanah, Dan teaches a short Mishna about Yom Kippur (this little study sesh may be a recurring bit) and then we consider how our Jewish practices are either (or both) religious and cultural. We also discuss the new AAP guidelines about lice in school and the reason why ELL numbers have trended down in recent years and kick off a special new Jukebox segment where Dave reacts to songs Dan thinks he should like. Dan encourages Dave to buy an old business in Auburn and dabbles with intermittent fasting, Dave keeps up his “involvement” with tickets, and a whole lot more.
E77: Last Call For 5782 9/19/22

We’ve got Dave’s Man of the Year award, Dan’s missing baseball wining the local internet, Dave’s plans for the Fryeburg Fair, Dan’s college roommate going toe-to-toe with the governor of Florida, and how hard it is to change large, complicated institutions.

With temps and Covid surging again, we are back to put an optimistic spin on the coming week. We’ve got a mixed bag of items including interesting virus combinations, 6th grade math decisions, Liverpool grabbing another trophy, and the Celtics seemingly having a date with destiny. Dan feels good about having a full house again, Dave gets misty about an upcoming college graduation and a water trampoline, and we learn about… toe beans. If you don’t know, now you know.
E74: Talk To Me In June
Dan and Dave somehow find time in the middle of a crazy time of year to check in and hop back on the pod for a quick review of the past few weeks. We’ve got some tales from Dave’s Disney trip, a(nother) Covid spike, F1, and Ozark, and it appears that we’ve cursed the Red Sox. Dave also talks about his ride in a Tesla, Dan cancels Florida, rural Maine sprouts a 6’8” basketball phenom, and it gets a little dark given recent political events in America.

March 7th, 2022
Dan and Dave are back with Episode 70 this week and there’s a lot going on as we mark the 2-year anniversary of the Covid shutdown of 2020. We tackle the war in Ukraine, the swan song of mask mandates, the leaf blower vote in Lexington, and the end of winter sports, and the rare convergence of Purim and Saint Patrick’s Day. Also, we’ve got a Maine high school hockey playoff update, Inventing Anna, differing takes on weddings, and a few other goodies.
E69: Not Enough People Bought Donuts 2.7.22
With an exhausting January now behind us, we’re back with a fresh pod as we prepare for our birthdays next week. We cover the rise and fall of Omicron, a school budget and a new fire station in Bedford, answer a bucketful of yes/no questions, and lament the closure of an Auburn (Maine) eatery. Also- what we are watching, calendar drift in Judaism, and no, Dan will not be watching the Super Bowl.

It’s a family show today as Jocelyn Geller drops by to chat about metalworking, farming, and a whole lot more. Dave touches on Omicron, Dan gets questioned about finding time to watch and read so many things, and we get halfway through a 20/20. Plus we celebrate a Bat Mitzvah-versary, disagree about cargo pants, and discuss Quentin Tarantino films, while Dan gets ready to do something way out of character (but very much in-character) on Friday night.
E67 The Pop-Up Pod 11.21.21
Dan and Dave fly in for a quick hitter with a brand-new podcast recorder as they enter Thanksgiving week. Is a Flu-Covid double-headed monster in the cards? What new volunteer position did Dan just agree to (hint: it’s a deep townie position)? How big is Dan’s Thanksgiving turkey? Do kids know who Patrick Ewing is? Plus, Fenway Sports Group buys the Penguins, Dave preps for his booster, and the impending four-day cone of silence… except if you’re working like Dave is.
E66: Adam Hoffman- Never Pay The First Bill 11.8.21
Dan and Dave are joined this week by Adam Hoffman, a 2013 graduate of Lexington High School and current Vice President of ClaimInformatics, a company that detects medical billing fraud. Adam talks about his path from LHS, to Washington University in Saint Louis, and his current life in Pittsburgh, all while riffing on sports, transportation infrastructure, and waiting times in Dave’s practice. We speculate on the hundreds of billions of dollars wrongly coded and billed in the healthcare industry, we talk about travel vlogs, long train rides, upcoded amputations, and recent show binges, while also getting into Lexington storefronts, avoiding Connecticut, and the Duquesne Incline. Enjoy!
E65: King Salmon 11.1.21
On a crisp fall morning, Dan and Dave bite into some leftover Halloween candy and talk about the week that was. Not to be missed- booster updates, Dave gives a shot, Dan preps for Bedford Special Town Meeting, and Dave’s food consumption at the pumpkin-carving get-together at his house. Come for the candy, stay for the salmon skin.

Dan and Dave are back with a special pod drop after a sparkling fall week bookended by their trip to Fenway on Tuesday and Dan’s follow-up trip to Gillette on Sunday. We also chat about toll increases on the Maine Turnpike, “The Val” in Billerica, and give you a special dessert pod recorded post-game while waiting to leave the parking garage in Longwood after Laz Diaz cost the Red Sox game 4. Plus, new work swag for Dan, Dave hits the road to Skidmore, and the clowns that Dan had to walk into the Pats game with.
October is in full swing and we’ve got all the feels over here on the pod. We reflect on our trip to Lewiston-Auburn earlier this month, including the driving tour of Dave’s old stomping grounds, the condo-ficaton of Dave’s old synagogue, and the beautiful European cathedral in the middle of Lewiston. More importantly, we discuss the retrieval of a dormant Torah from storage, the discovery of a gorgeous, un-voweled Hafatarah scroll, and how the trip back in time affected us both. On a lighter note, we prepare to go to Fenway for the ALCS, Dave talks about the Fryeburg Fair, and Dan reviews family weekend at Brandeis. Enjoy!
E61: The Allegory Of The Pod 9.27.21
Dan and Dave quickly brush aside a catastrophic weekend for the Red Sox and Patriots and engage in some earnest Q &A about things like: 1) How long do you have to wait between getting Flu and Covid vaccines?, 2) How do we feel about the MCAS?, and 3) What are our thoughts on fake holidays? Also, Dave finally goes apple picking, Dan does not successfully use the timer on his new stove, we talk about The Matrix, and, surprising no one, we confirm that masks do, in fact, work.

After a long, hot, and relentless summer, Dan and Dave are back and in good spirits on a spectacular fall morning. We recap Bedford Day in all of its glory, Dave chimes in on the breaking news about vaccines, Dan reviews the (rapid) timeline of child Covid vaccination acceptance in Bedford and then recaps the end of summer baseball and the start of college for his oldest child, and Dave mulls over buying a farm...for real. Also: Dan endorses “Never Have I Ever”, Dave has a new boat and will soon have his own Torah, we have differing takes on “culinary markers”, a heroic beaver in Maine saves taxpayers a few thousand dollars, Dan needed some help cleaning his gutters, and Dave unsuccessfully appeals to get his car to pass inspection.
E59: A Hazy Outlook 7.26.2021
As wildfire smoke and swarms of mosquitoes descend on Middlesex County, Dan and Dave kick off the week with a quick check-in on Delta, mosquito control, takeout options, and Dave’s questionable Top 5 list for college dorm purchases. Dan tells a tale about transcontinental soft pretzel delivery from St. Louis, we find a tall chestnut tree in Hebron (Maine), and somehow the word “octopus” comes up twice in different contexts.
E58: Brenda Kenahan 7.19.2021
Brenda Kenahan, mother of dragons, joins the pod this week to talk about her Lexington-to-Bedford life journey, raising boys, being married to a food scientist, and a gutsy performance at her junior prom. We talk about her online sleuthing, Dan reflects on his umpiring and ejecting a player from a game on Friday, Dave and Brenda talk about “Sixteen Candles”, and we all affirm our commitment to #FreeBritney. Plus: Florida Man is back, stealing an alligator from a miniature golf course.
Dan and Dave are back with a review of the summer so far, with congratulations being offered to friend-of-the-pod Sal Frelick, who was selected 15th overall in the MLB draft, consolations being offered to friend-of-the-pod Marc Bornstein, who saw England lose the Euros live at Wembley, and memories being shared of a recent errand to pick up a treatment table that ended up going a little bit sideways. Dave talks about a spike in strep and other respiratory infections and having no kids at home in July, Dan reminds Dave about how he is having the opposite experience, and of course we talk about masks again. Also, why don’t we launch an Autumn Olympics? Discuss...
E56: “Podcasts Are Good Things” with Bronson Terry
6/7/2021
Live from a undisclosed location, Dan and Dave are back with and brimming with optimism in the aftermath of high school graduations, a waning pandemic, and an honest-to-goodness heat wave. Joining them on this pod is Dr. Bronson Terry, pediatrician and soccer aficionado, and the banter ensues about soccer fandom, kit reviews, and predictions for the Euros. We also chat about heatstroke, vaccination rates, Tenet, Bye Bye Birdie, and, of course, downtown Carlisle, while affirming that yes, podcasts are indeed good things
E55: I Guess We’re Sitting Around In Starbucks Again 5.24.2021
With all signs pointing towards a waning pandemic and with Memorial Day around the corner, Dan pesters Dave about post-Covid anxiety, the future of masking, and the almost complete absence of flu this past winter. Dan wraps up a fabulous final weekend of European soccer and Bedford High School baseball, Dave learns where ELHS graduation will be held, and Dan reveals which local celebrity he saw at physical therapy. And for some ridiculous reason, the Maine Red Claws changed their mascot? Sigh...
E54: One Pod At A Time 5.17.21
Dan and Dave are back with breaking news on the masking front and ruminations about pollen and the Jewish holiday of Shavuot. Dan provides updates on his meniscus rehab and kid accomplishments, Dave reflects on an upcoming month without any children at home, and there’s also some good pontoon boat content. Come for the mask mandates, stay for the parental pride.
We're back with Dan’s torn meniscus, Dave’s take on vaccine approvals and changes in outdoor mask guidance, and a tour of Maine high school mascots. Dan looks forward to outdoor Town Meeting and high school graduation on the turf, Dave reminisces about fake IDs in the 1980s, and Dan discusses his preference to keep his face (and emotions) hidden behind a mask. Dan also laments the ongoing bad behavior by adults in youth sports and Dave chides Dan for no longer owning cargo shorts.
Often name-dropped, Dana Bureau swoops in to the virtual studio for an hour-long pod full of Easter eggs for those thirsty for insight into Dave’s formative years. This week’s triumvirate explores investment opportunities in Androscoggin bowling, tales from the road from Dana’s career in teaching and sales (La Jolla, South Korea, and beyond), and memories from Edward Little High School in the mid-80s. Dan quizzes the locals about storefronts in the Auburn Mall, Dana outs Dave for stealing a jersey to get varsity soccer minutes, and Dan reveals where his 12th grader will be going to college next year.
Hope springs eternal and Dan and Dave kick off April with a blistering pod as the world creeps back towards normalcy. The guys reflect on an outdoor seder, tick bites, blood types, and Covid variants while also grappling with the discography of The Violent Femmes and The Lemonheads. Dave gets quizzed on Lewiston-Auburn eateries, Dan talks about a reflexive flex at his vaccination, and stories abound about a mythic Nirvana concert on Landsdowne Street in the early 90s.
Episode 50 arrives on the one-year anniversary of lockdown and Dan and Dave check in after a significant few weeks. We chat about vaccine distribution, schools reopening, and the fact that better days seem to be coming quickly. We also look at Sal Frelick’s draft projection and run through a rapid-fire 20/20 featuring the classic falcon-vs-dolphin debate, perfect albums (might the answer be the Violent Femmes?), and tilting at windmills. 50 episodes down, and many more to go- thanks for listening.
Dan and Dave reconnect with Millie Landis and have an absolute blast this week on the pod. Dave chats about the latest with the vaccine, Dan reflects on the vote for a full K-5 return in Bedford, and Millie reports on the life of a college student during the pandemic. Dan and Millie share stories from their 2018 Israel trip, Dave and Millie remember "Mud Day" circa 2006, and we all share some laughs about seasickness, coconut milk, and unpopular opinions. Also: Dan votes for "The Great Gatsby" over "Catcher in the Rye", Millie talks about her new Etsy shop "Kippot For Good", and Dave shares his struggles with work/study at Brandeis. Enjoy!
With just a week to go until their birthdays, Dan and Dave are back for an up-tempo pod on a snowy Sunday afternoon. Dave chimes in with updates on the flu- and ear infection-free winter, the lack of a pandemic baby boom, and signing for vaccines, Dan reflects on school budgeting, the 4-day Kindergarten return in Bedford, and the runup to the Town election in March, and more importantly, we discuss options for pod merch. We’ve also got a Peloton and the triumph of the new phone industrial complex in Dan’s house, Dave’s issues with some home repairs, face tattoos in Florida (and in pop music), renumbering highway exits, and more streaming recommendations. We also mourn the recent deaths of people we knew, celebrate Marc Bornstein’s birthday, and predict who will win the Super Bowl. Spoiler alert: Dan was wrong.
At long last, our old friend Lori Alper joins the pod for a conversation about her path from the tree-lines streets of Madison, Wisconsin, to the life and celebrity of parenting three children, leaving the legal profession, and becoming an environmental activist. Listen as Dan nerds out about isthmuses, we consider double-masking, and Lori owns up to secret dates at Whole Foods, while also weighing in on self-care during a pandemic, turmeric, vitamin D, and Dave's skiing technique.
Jeremy Bleich was a 2008 first-round pick by the New York Yankees whose playing career has taken him all over the country, including a stint with the Oakland A’s in MLB. Jeremy now plays for Team Israel and is ramping up for the 2021 Olympics while also working for the Pittsburgh Pirates on data analytics. Jeremy swung by the virtual studio to talk about his playing days, his now-famous high school coach, and a very interesting college classmate. Enjoy!
Dan and Dave close out the year talking about the vaccine rollout, assessing the numerous calamities of the past year, and of course reflecting on recent times they were wrong. We also address important questions such as “Did HydroFlasks win 2020?” (yes), “should Dave be planning for any travel to Florida?” (no), and “was there any good news in the last twelve months?” (of course). See you back in 2021!
As the sun sets on 2020, old friend Brian Cutler hops on the pod with tales from his days in the military and helps us understand the actual uses of satellite imaging that might be a little less exciting than what we see in the movies. Stick around for other stories about barefoot running, space jumping, and two incredible examples of “times we were wrong”, including Dave almost burning his house down during Chanukah.
With the election behind us and Thanksgiving around the corner, we’re back this week with a pod full of important questions and answers. Was the coronavirus lurking in Italy last fall? Will there be high school basketball and hockey this winter? Did the CDC quietly change its view on the risk of in-person school? Will Yam Madar make the Celtics roster? Probably, probably, yes, and no. Dan also quizzes Dave on defunct sports franchises, Dave reflects on a Kissimmee crime scene, and we talk about the surprising connection between fennel and….marathons.
The first pod of November drops and we are back with Dave talking about the benefits and negatives of changing the clocks and the latest guidance on when to send kids to school, or not, when they have siblings who might be sick. Dan chimes in with updates from the State hearing on K-12 education and the closure of local high schools due to Covid, and the challenges of budgetary planning for FY22. Plus: holes in contact tracing, our favorite Sean Connery roles, songs with “Time” in their title, Dave learns about Blue Moons, and Florida Man is mauled by a black leopard.
Under gray skies and with both of us still recovering from a crazy week, Dave makes some predictions about flu and colors in some detail about peanut allergies, Dan speculates on the likelihood of winter sports and his concern for the amount of Covid at Deer Island, and we celebrate Israeli-Sudanese peace. Stick around for another installment of “Times We Were Wrong”, the return of Florida Man, and the best 20/20 yet, including some quality chupacabra talk, the timeless excellence of The Usual Suspects, thoughts on instant coffee, and our camo preferences.
Three weeks is a long time between pods, but we did it. We’re back today with some remote learning reflections, viral updates on strep, flu, and Covid, and how the 6-foot distancing guideline is sparing classrooms from quarantining. Dave talks about the Tappan Zee Bridge, Dan dreams of an Emirati vacation, and we introduce a new segment called “Times We Were Wrong This Week.” And don’t miss the big tease as we hint at some new pods we’ve got lined up for the fall.
David Landis returns to the pod this week for a quarterly check-in on the culinary arts, Covid, and the political moment. The guys cover a lot of ground in this episode, including how to prepare and enjoy smoked watermelon, how to weigh the various risks involved with school re-opening, the death of RBG, and the tenuousness of American democracy as we head towards November. Also- fleshpots, reflections on the Jewish new year, and a new acronym...DINO.
Dave and Dan are joined by Dave’s old friend Dave Sassano, and the Mainers walk down memory lane about the good old days on the Androscoggin, including the time they wore white jeans to a driving range and incurred the derision of some cooler guys. Sassano talks about his work in the water treatment industry at Idexx Laboratories, Dan does a roll-call with some districts going through school reopening drama, and the guys all dive into a 20/20 that came up three questions short but went plenty long. Stick around for underrated Harrison Ford movies, some corn talk, Dave struggling to describe what kind of squash he likes, and Patriots win total predictions that were absolutely impacted by recency bias.
Dan and Dave are back from a late-summer break with 60 minutes about the flu vaccine, school re-opening, rule changes in soccer, and trying to stay positive as we hit the 6-month mark of the pandemic. Dan reflects on taking a step back from Facebook and trying to read more, Dave talks on crossing the picket line at a movie in the 80s in Auburn, and they both publicly call out people who have been dodging coming on as guests. Not to be missed: foreign-language Netflix shows, “Losers”, early-season apple-picking, delivering babies, and pie.
Friend of the pod Marc Bornstein returns for a second time, this time with his daughter, as Dan and Dave do some quick hits on Israeli-Emirati relations and get whiplash from policy changes on schools. Then we are off on another 20/20 with a deep dive on bathtub gin, Julius Erving, the perplexities of hard seltzer, and avocado toast. Marc talks about domestic labor, Dave acknowledges that he did not make the most of his time at Brandeis, and Dan retells and urban legend about Wade Boggs that is at least partially true.
Listen carefully and you'll hear the fire pit crackling on this podcast as Dan and Dave sat out by the lake burning the midnight embers and enjoying a quiet night without the usual distractions. Settle in for this fireside chat about common lake injuries, re-opening schools, lead poisoning, and Dan's close encounter with lightning in 1993. Dave acknowledges that he still hasn't seen "Heat", Dan admits to not having seen "The Irishman", and Dave dodges questions about the small town of Minot, Maine. Also: sand-blasting tombstones, the Ground Round, and "Diner."
Dan and Dave are back with a rapid-fire pod on news of the week and then a third edition of 20/20 in which we reminisce about old restaurants and Dan fishes for artichoke suggestions. Also: credit card fraud and identity theft, dock spiders, and berries.
In this episode Dan and Dave hit the road for a visit with Jillian McDonough and Lorraine Shedoudi of Lexington Power Yoga. In a far-ranging conversation, they learn about the yoga sutras and hypermobility while also gaining and understanding of what “getting better at yoga” can really mean.
Enjoy Jillian and Lorraine’s backstories, Dave’s questionable claim that he was once a hip-hop dancer, and Dan’s acknowledgement that he runs too much, and stick around for some insights on “Inside Out,” the human need for community and social interactions, and how yoga can provide a path to balance, mindfulness, and gratitude.
The school re-opening discussion continues, Dan becomes a target of irrational rage at supermarkets, and Dave gets feisty at the gas station. Will there be enough flu vaccines this year? What’s up with the aluminum can shortage? We have these discussions, and others, in this heat wave edition of the podcast.
Will schools open until the fall? Should they? How do we get there with what we know now? What about sports? Dan and Dave dive down this rabbit hole and also review the outcome of Bedford’s outdoor town meeting, Dave talks about some of his boat problems, and Dan reflects on baseball and softball getting started again. Not to be missed: Dan’s surprisingly-delayed Brandeis graduation, pronouncing “Hermione”, Dave’s encounters with Maine politicians, and what to do with a baby skunk.
