Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. -Hebrews 4:12-13
Restraining the tongue is a difficult endeavor… as fallible humans in our fallen human condition, holding one’s tongue, restraining oneself from spewing unkind words, can often be hard, if not impossible for us to do… drive in Houston traffic during rush hour and you’ll quickly get my point.
Ephesians 5:15-16 says, “15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” Some translations say, “Look carefully how you walk… redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”
Ephesians 4:25-5:2 The New Revised Standard Version
25 So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. 26 Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not make room for the devil. 28 Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. 29 Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31 Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32 and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. 5 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2 and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword."
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. - Ephesians 2:13-14
With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. -Ephesians 1:8b-10
Paul says, “Three times I appealed to the Lord about this [thorn…this weakness], that it would leave me, but he [God] said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.”
Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.
For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.” See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!
“So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord— for we walk by faith, not by sight."
16 So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day. 17 For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all measure
Maydell Amanda "Sarah" Schaefer, 91, of Splendora went to be with her Lord Sunday, June 3, 2018. She was born Friday, October 22, 1926 in Houston, Texas to Norman and May Petty.

Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.
If we will allow ourselves to be led by the Spirit of God, then we will be children of God. And if we pour that example into our children and lead them by the Spirit of God, they will be children of God also. And children of God don’t shoot their classmates and teachers, children of God don’t bully the weak, children of God don’t think about killing others or themselves.
Paul writes in Romans 8, "We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies."
As we mark Pentecost once again, we see that the same Holy Spirit fire is the very thing our world yearns for today in the wake of such senseless violence brought on by the prevailing culture of godlessness and the demons of apathy, immorality, hopelessness and fear that rob our communities of vitality, morality, hope and love.

Today we look at Psalm 51, a psalm of David, wherein he laments and reflects on his sinful nature, the same sinful human nature that you and I struggle with along our Lenten journey...
For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Abraham entered into a covenant with God. Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many, and it came to pass just as God said.
God is a covenant maker and a covenant keeper. His promises are sure and He is always faithful.
In this message, we examine the covenant God makes with us when we believe on Christ, who once and for all, exchanged his righteousness for our sins to fulfill the promises of God.
"He went and proclaimed God’s salvation to earlier generations who ended up in the prison of judgment because they wouldn’t listen. You know, even though God waited patiently all the days that Noah built his ship, only a few were saved then, eight to be exact—saved from the water by the water."
Peter is comparing the work of Christ in the world today to the time of Noah, and we have to ask ourselves the all-important question as we enter the Lenten season… “Are we listening?
Mark 9 describes the Transfiguration of our Lord... "Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them."
The disciples witness the mountaintop conference with Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. It's a meeting of the Law, the Prophets, and the Word, and when all is said and done, God tells the disciples, of those three, listen to Jesus... because he has fulfilled the others!
Paul says, in order to win them over to Christ I am willing to be all things to all people - not by becoming like them, not by behaving in an un-Christ-like manner, but by being an example to them of the genuine, honest, truthful representative of the One True God, to give them an example of what it looks like, sounds like, is like, to be godly, to be a saved person navigating through an unsaved world....
"They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes." (Mark 1:22) And why wouldn't he? After all he is the author and finisher of our faith!
Paul tells us that "the present form of the world is passing away." He tells us that time is of the essence. If that's true, and all indications are that it is, in fact, true, then what are you doing with your time? Are you focused on the things of the world or on the things of God. When you edit your to do list, do you cross off kingdom things or do you cross off worldly things? What godly thing have you sacrificed on the altar of the world for the sake of your own agenda recently? Today's message gives us opportunity for a little introspection.
Or do you not know that your body is a temple[a] of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.
This is the year! This is YOUR year! This is the year when you can step out in faith into the plan God has for your life!
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil."
The Advent season is generally about two things: 1. waiting expectantly and 2. urgent preparation. 2 Peter 3:14-15 talks about waiting and preparing. "Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation."
Are you leading a life worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory? Pastor Steven preaches from Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians.

Jacob wrestled with God, or maybe Jacob wrestled with the angel of God, or maybe Jacob wrestled with his God-created true identity... scholar's debate, but one thing is certain, Jacob was a prodigal son. We all are prodigal sons until we finally turn around and see our Father running toward us.
In Romans 8, Paul teaches us that we are joint heirs to the kingdom of God with Christ - if we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. So just who exactly is this Christ with whom I am joined as a co-heir? Paul tells us who he is in Colossians 1 and it's pretty amazing:
"...for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him.
He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything.
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross." (Colossians 1:16-20, NRSV)
As Christians we most often live a life of contradictions as we continue the life-long process of sanctification - of becoming more like Christ. We struggle with overcoming our sin-nature even though we want to do what God wants us to do. If that sounds like your struggle, you're not alone and you're in good company. The Apostle Paul struggled with the same issue, and he talks about it in Romans 7...
As we approach the celebration of American Independence, let us pause and remember that real freedom was won for us more than 2,000 years ago when Jesus went to the cross for us. Freedom is more than the birth of a nation 241 years ago... true freedom is the result of new birth in Christ and we can celebrate it whenever someone chooses to confess with their mouth and believe in their heart that Jesus Christ is Lord!
"The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus." Pastor Steven speaks on Romans 6.

Thursday, May 25th probably came and went for most people without any noticeable distinction that might set it apart from any other weekday. Most of us probably went about our day Thursday without any conscious thought concerning the historical and spiritual meaning of the day. But, last Thursday was in fact Ascension Day… a day of great significance in all of Christiandom and the whole world.
As I read the passage in Acts 17 where Paul addresses the Athenians in front of the Areopagus, it got me thinking two things... 1) What idols do we worship in our time, and 2) are we still worshipping an unknown god… or perhaps better stated, is the one true God still unknown to us?
Have you ever stopped to ponder the question, "What makes an abundant life?" Have you ever asked yourself, "Is my life abundant?"Jesus is the good shepherd - The one who leads us to green pastures and still waters. He is the gate to life - abundant life. Abundance is not so much about quantity as it is quality. Pastor Steven preaches on John 10 and Acts 2.

Jesus said, "As the Father sent me, I am sending you." You are missionaries. Are you in your mission field yet? You are evangelists. Are you proclaiming the gospel yet?
He Is Risen! Thanks be to God, His resurrection is our resurrection when we confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that He is Lord of all!
In order to get to the joy of the resurrection, we have to complete the journey. We have to endure the crucifixion. Good Friday service at Countryside UMC.
Upon Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the people celebrated the arrival of an earthly king. But his kingdom was of a different sort, and in a matter of days, the shouts of praise, the shouts of "Hosanna," would turn to shouts of "Crucify him!"
The account in John 11 of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead is amazing, but not at all surprising. Resurrection is what Jesus does. He brings the dead to life. He resurrected Lazarus, he resurrected himself after dying on the cross to exchange our sins for His righteousness, and He resurrected you and me when we confessed with our mouths and believed in our hearts that He is Lord. He's in the resurrection business.
"Who sinned, this man or his parents?" the disciples asked Jesus as they looked at the blind man. What a different place the world would be if, instead of constantly looking for an explanation of the evil in the world, instead of looking for someone to blame, we decided to focus our attention on what God can do!
While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. That proves God’s love for us. While we were still adrift in the wilderness of sin, with no water in sight, God gave his only Son, who poured out his life, his living water, for you. Thanks be to God. Pastor Steven discusses Exodus 17 and John 4.
We simply have to grasp the seriousness of the human condition of sin we find ourselves in, because of the first man, Adam, so that we can understand just how very much we need the grace, mercy and redemption only made possible by the second man - Jesus.

From time to time we are called to the mountain. Our tendency in that experience is to want to stay on the mountaintop. It is there where we find inspiration, receive instruction and commune with our Lord. But, we are not so much called to the mountain as we are sent from it. Because our true calling is always in the valley or on the plain where the people are -that's our mission field; that's where we put the mountaintop inspiration to work for the kingdom!
A good foundation is essential to support the structure built upon it. And the structure built upon a good foundation should be worthy of the foundation. Every craftsman involved in the construction must do their part or their part won't pass the inspector's thorough inspection. Building buildings or building lives... the principles apply.
A lot of questions about the law in the news feeds recently. What exactly is the standard? In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus calls us to a higher standard, a higher righteousness than the righteousness of the Old Law. What exactly is that standard and how do we attain it? Good questions for which there are good answers.
NaCl. Sodium Chloride. Plain old salt. Why would Jesus tell us to be that? Light, too. He tells us to be light. Light and salt. Salt and light. Salty light? What's the deal?
Patricia Ann Hughes was born to Emma and Leo Ray on August 6, 1932 in Sabine Pass, Texas, where she lived with her husband Bill Hughes until he retired, and they moved to Palestine, Texas where they resided until 1999. She moved to Splendora, Texas and resided there with her daughter until Pat went to be with the Lord at 4:45 p.m. on January 24, 2017.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, her husband Bill Hughes, and her companion, John Schweitzer. She is survived by her children: Melody Ferguson; Linda Biggs and her husband, Joe; Beverly Pierce and her husband, John; and Gary Hughes; her five grandchildren and their spouses and thirteen great grandchildren.
Pat was a faithful member of Countryside Methodist Church and also attended Caney Creek Cowboy Church. She was a light to all who knew her and she will be greatly missed.
This Sunday at Countryside we look at the true source of a nation's greatness. It doesn't come from a president, it doesn't come from a government. No, it comes from "we the people" unified in purpose and spirit. Still, if we are to be truly great, we have to be unified in the right things - things of righteousness; things of God.

Today we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord, which is the revelation of the Christ to the world. "Arise, shine; for your light has come," proclaims Isaiah the prophet. The Gospel according to Matthew gives us the account of the Magi traveling from afar, following the star to see the newborn King, and falling on their knees when they find Him. When we seek Jesus, we are the Magi - rising from the darkness of ignorance into the light of discovery and understanding about who He is and who we are in relationship with Him. Be a Magi this New Year - come and see this wonderful thing that God has done for you.
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Pastor Steven proclaims the coming of the light of Christ into the world at Countryside United Methodist Church, Christmas Day 2016.
Paul begins his letter to the Romans just as many letters begin, with an introduction. Introductions are important. They tell the audience who is speaking, where they come from and why they have authority or credibility - they help us understand why we should listen in the first place.
Matthew also gives us an introduction in his account of the birth of Jesus. His introduction explains and proclaims who this newborn babe is, this baby born to Mary and Joseph, and why we should pay attention to him.
Isaiah's prophetic word tells us that "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord, just as the water covers the sea." The Apostle Paul tells us that Christ came to confirm God's promises given to the ancestors. And the Gospel according to Matthew tells us to "prepare the way for the Lord's coming."
Advent is both a season of preparation for the celebration of the coming of the Christ Child to a broken world, and a season of preparation for the Second Advent, the second coming of Christ the King.
Nobody knows the hour of Christ's return except God the Father. It is therefore prudent for us to be ever ready.

What have I to be thankful for? Depending on our circumstances, the tone in which we ask ourselves that question may vary. Our circumstances tend to dictate our tone... until we understand just exactly what it is for which we should be truly thankful.
Are we marching toward freedom or are we marching toward captivity? Luke's gospel says we are in for a rocky road. Isaiah's prophesy says that we are due a new heaven and a new earth soon. Interestingly enough, both are true.
The people were discouraged because they could not envision their rebuilt temple having anywhere near the glory of the original. But God had plans to make the rebuilt temple more glorious, more majestic more wonderful then the people could ever hope for or imagine. It's not hard to see the message of their experience applied to our current circumstances.
Me? A Pharisee? After reading Luke 18, the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, if we are honest, we'd have to admit that most of us have one foot in the Pharisee camp and one foot in the humble Tax Collector camp. We all have Pharisee tendencies, especially when it comes to how we do church.
The thing is, churches and church goers who operate out of the Pharisee camp tend not to have as great an impact in the world as those who come from a place of humility, and mercy and grace. The question then becomes, what kind of church / church goer are you? How big an impact are you making in your community? Let's discuss.
The prophet Jeremiah reminds us that, as believers, the Word of God is written on our hearts. This separates us, in a holy way, from the rest of humanity, who perceives God's law only from the perspective of conscience. In Psalm 119, we see that the Word is the source of understanding, wisdom and guidance, and Paul tells us that the Word is useful for sound teaching, reproof and correction.
When we suffer hardship for the sake of the Gospel, even to the point of being chained like a criminal, the Word of God is not, cannot be, chained.
The promise is this: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself. (2 Ti 2:11–13).
We have been given authority over both the natural and the supernatural realms. Not only that, we have been given a spirit of power, love and discipline to stand up in righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. With all of the power of the Trinity for us, who can possibly come against us.
In his letters to Timothy, Paul gives us some good, practical theology that we can apply in our lives as we fight the good fight of faith.
As is often God's timing, my message, written prior to the recent bombings in NYC and NJ, and the mall attacks in MN, became all the more relevant as we awoke Sunday morning to the news while we got ready for church. As in the days of the prophet Jeremiah, our world is spiritually bankrupt. The people are worshipping the false gods of self-centeredness and secular humanist culture. Violence in the name of a false god and his false prophet is unbridled. The world is in need of the same healing balm of repentance for which Jeremiah lamented.
Like the shrewd manager in Jesus' parable in Luke's Gospel message, we must be streetwise, creative and get our books in order, and then help others to do the same.
On this 15th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on America, Pastor Steven explores three basic questions in the context of Luke 15: What is the nature of God? What is the nature of humankind? What is the nature of the relationship between God and humankind, and between human beings, one to another?
What is the cost of discipleship in today's culture? What does it take to really follow Jesus these days? Pastor Steven takes a closer look at what Jesus has to say in the Gospel according to Luke 14:25-33 and several other passages on the subject.
Luke 16 teaches us that we can either seek the favor of man or the favor of God. Seeking the favor of man is temporal. Seeking the favor of God has eternal impact. Matthew 6 teaches us that we cannot serve two masters. We can choose to serve God or we can choose to serve mammon, we cannot serve both. When we choose God and His righteousness, we have His assurance that He will never abandon us.
The world has been shaken before. The writer of Hebrews tells us that the world will be shaken again, and not just the world but heaven too. But while all of creation is shaken, those covered by the blood of the covenant will remain - we won't be shaken!
Arthur Raymond Johnson went home to be with our Lord on July 20, 2016 after a prolonged illness. A native Houstonian, Arthur was born December 10, 1952 to Bettie Louise and Robert Sidney Johnson, who precede him in death along with his daughter, Donise.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Kathy, and his sister Sidney Hill, her husband, Joe and their daughter, Amanda; his children, Justin and Jeff Johnson; grandchildren, Layne, Gabby, Joe and Maddie.
Many Christians are troubled by Jesus' words, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword." The gospel message is one of hope, and of love; yet for those in our culture who have resolved in their hearts that they will not hear, that they will not see, it is a message that often brings hostility. Pastor Steven preaches on this and other related scripture from Matthew and Luke.
Good Church, Bad Church. In our Christian walk, we've all probably experienced plenty of both. The thing is, the one common denominator in all of those experiences, good and bad, is...well...us.
Jesus experienced both good and bad in the temples and synagogues he visited. And he turned over a few tables when the experience was less than he had hoped. His desire was that his house should be a house of prayer.
How do we get there - that house of prayer? It takes faith. The kind of faith of our ancestors - Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses and Aaron...
When you were dead because of the things you had done wrong and because you were outside the law, God made you alive with Christ and forgave all the things you had done wrong. He destroyed the record of the debt we owed, with its requirements that worked against us. He canceled it by nailing it to the cross.
Your debt is PAID and all of its legal ramifications are wiped clean.

Our friend and brother in Christ, Walter Larry Carruthers, 73, went home to be with Jesus on July 7, 2016. He was the husband of Ruth Beebout Carruthers. They shared 54 years of marriage together.
Born in Chariton, Iowa, he was the son of Quentin and Theo Carruthers. He graduated from Knoxville High School in 1960. He has been retired and living in the Houston area since 2008.
He is survived by wife Ruth Beebout Carruthers, 3 daughters and their families: Laura Carruthers Cheung, Lawrence, Sierra, and Gabrielle Cheung; Jo Carruthers Lim, David, Madilyn, and Chase Lim; Ellen Carruthers Flores, Thomas, Logan, Evangeline Flores; sister Margaret Carruthers, and brother Frank Carruthers. He was predeceased by parents Quentin and Theo Carruthers and brother Gary Carruthers.
In the aftermath of the tragic events in Dallas, Pastor Steven reflects on his visit to the recovering city and reminds us that the way forward is by standing up with our congregations and being the church in our communities. We must be worthy of our calling, made so by the transforming power of Jesus.

As people of God, the Bible says, we are called to freedom. What does that mean, exactly? What is our responsibility in that?
What can we learn from Elijah? When our circumstances are overwhelming, where can we turn for strength? Pastor Steven takes a closer look at what the prophet Elijah has to teach us in 1 Kings 18 and 19.
Pastor Steven's message this week is about addiction. More specifically how we are ALL of us addicted to the human condition and how no one's addiction is worse than or better than anyone else's. We all need a spiritual recovery program and only Jesus can provide it.
When Paul preached to the churches in Judea, his reputation as a "former persecutor of Christians who now preaches the faith" went before him. This transformation glorified God, and those that heard his preaching glorified God because of it. Like Paul, we believers have undergone a transformation, and our testimony and witness glorify God and cause those who hear it to glorify God in response.
The relationship we have, as believers, with the Holy Trinity should cause us to pause and reflect on the majesty and divinity of God and the dignity of humankind.
What kinds of things do you think about while you’re waiting? What thoughts run through your mind when you are on the other side of a life-changing event or series of events and you are waiting for the fallout or the windfall, the consequences or the reward, and the anticipated timing of the next step? If you’re human, then you probably start to second guess the decisions that got you there; the choices you made along the way; the successes and the failures. You ask yourself questions – What could I have done differently? What could I have done better? What if I had done this or done that or not done this or that? We all have mundane, tedious days when we wonder if we are making any headway at all. But even the mundane "everydays" have purpose in God's plan, and even the un-glamorous roads lead to the holy city. Pastor Steven preaches on Revelation 21 and 22. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus were lamenting the death of their Master. Their walk to Emmaus began with despair, confusion, grief and hopelessness. Our personal journeys begin in that way until we encounter Jesus. We all are without hope until we know Christ. We all have struggles as we walk through life. What is your road to Emmaus?

An encounter with the glory of the living Christ is indeed a mountaintop experience. Many of us experience those Christ-moments in the worship setting at church on Sunday. Those experiences can be so powerfully moving that we never want them to stop; we want to stay right there on the mountaintop and bask in the glory of our Lord. But, we cannot stay on the mountaintop. We are called to carry the reflection of Christ's glory back down the mountain into the deep, dark valley so that Christ's light can illuminate the upward path for others.
"I am here to 'Proclaim the Year of the Lord’s Favor!'" That's what Jesus told the hometown crowd in the synagogue in Nazareth. What did He mean by that? How did the hometown crowd receive his message? Why does it matter 2,000+ years later? Pastor Steven discusses Luke 4:14-21.
The Miracle at the Wedding in Cana was not the public revelation to the world that we typically think it to be. No, the turning of the water into wine was only witnessed by a few, Mary, the six brand new disciples, and the servants who dipped the wine out of the large stone pots. Of those few that witnessed it, it was the disciples for whom the miracle was meant. Seeing it, they believed, and believing they followed and changed the world.
