GEARING-Roles is a strong multidisciplinary consortium of 10 European academic and non-academic partners that will design, implement, and evaluate 6 Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) following the steps described in the GEAR tool (define, plan, act and check) with the firm objective of challenging and transforming gender roles and identities linked to professional careers, and work towards real institutional change.

Although in general, girls’ academic achievement outperforms that of boys, in many countries boys continue to have an advantage in STEM fields. One of the most persistent, sexist stereotypes has been that boys are better at math. In a paper published in Science (Vol. 321, No. 5888), Janet Hyde and her colleagues dismissed the perceived gender gap in math performance by analyzing math test scores from 7 million students, second grade through to grade 11. The team collected standardized math assessments from 10 states and analyzed the scores of male and female students. They found no difference in average performance. Looking at the higher and lower ends of the distribution, Hyde and her colleagues again found no meaningful differences between the genders. But the long-standing debate over gender differences in mathematics is alive and well, and continues to be a lively topic within psychology. According to Zerrin Salikutluk and Stefanie Heyne, one possible explanation for the female disadvantage in maths and their under-representation in technical professions is culturally embedded beliefs about female inferiority and male superiority in maths and related disciplines. In this podcast we discuss this issue with two outstanding experts: : Prof. Enrique Zuazua and Prof. Marta Macho. Marta Macho Stadler is a Spanish mathematician. She earned her Phd from Université Claude Bernard in Lyon. She is a professor of Geometry and Topology at the University of the Basque Country and a specialist in Geometric Theory of Foliations and non-commutative Geometry. She is also the editor of the Women with Science digital space of the Chair of Scientific Culture for which she has received several awards, including the 2016 Emakunde Equality Award. Enrique Zuazua Iriondo holds a Chair in Applied Analysis - Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at FAU- Friedrich–Alexander University, Erlangen–Nürnberg (Germany). He is the Director of CCM - Chair of Computational Mathematics at Deusto Foundation, University of Deusto in Bilbao in the Basque Country in Spain, where he leads the "DyCon: Dynamic Control" funded by the ERC – European Research. He has been a Professor of Applied Mathematics of the Department of Mathematics at UAM - Autonomous University since 2001. His fields of expertise include Applied Mathematics cover topics related with Partial Differential Equations, Systems Control. He has collaborated in different industrial sectors such as the optimal shape design in aeronautics and the management of electrical and water distribution networks.

On today’s podcast we will be hearing from the two 2019 winners of the Ada Byron Award: Concha Monje Micharet and Ana Freire.
The Ada Byron Award is named after Ada Byron, a famous mathematician is regarded as the first computer programmer. The award seeks to praise and draw attention to outstanding women in technology. In fact, the award is aimed at women with a degree or a career in the technological sphere, such as engineering, science and maths as well as others. The overall aim of the award is to: • Raise the visibility of women in technology and recognise their outstanding work, which is unknown to society at large. • Enrich society and provide female role models to younger generations. • Promote technological vocations and highlight their positive aspects by bringing technology closer to young women. • Showcase the importance of technology for economic growth. Our first winner need no introduction due to her significant experience. Concha Monje Micharet has an MSc. in Electronics Engineering from the Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. Degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Extremadura in Spain. She has been working on the area of control and robotics for over 15 years where she has been involved in many international and national research and industrial projects. She has published more than 100 research papers in high impact conferences and journals on control and robotics and chaired many international conferences. Currently she is an Expert Evaluator for the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Program and National Research Evaluator of the Spanish Ministry of Competitiveness and Industry. She is also the Director of the Center for Aeronautical Training and Services of the University Carlos III of Madrid (CATS-UC3M). Our second winner is equally impressive and inspirational, Ana Freire who holds a PhD in computer science. She is currently a Researcher and Lecturer at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, she is the Director of the Centre for Sustainability and is the Founder of Wisibilízalas. Her work surrounding web science and social computing has led her to collaborate with several institutions and companies such as Yahoo Labs, the University of Glasgow, the National Research Council (Italy) or the Clínic Hospital (Barcelona).
Welcome to GEARING Role’s first podcast episode, with guests Dr María López Belloso from Deusto University and Maxime Forest from Yellow Window, both partners in the GEARING Roles project.
Dr López Belloso holds a degree in Law and a PhD in Human Rights from the University of DEUSTO in Spain which is both the coordinator and implementing partners of GEARING Roles. Maria coordinates the project. Maria has experience in conducting research and managing research projects as well as teaching in academic settings. Her main research focus lies on the conflict in Western Sahara, which she has also looked at in terms of gender equality and human rights more broadly, specifically from the rights of victims of forced disappearance, and transitional justice. She also focuses on the emerging possibilities and potential application of new technologies to the promotion and advocacy of Human Rights. She often takes on an interdisciplinary approach to improve protection systems and to develop innovative human rights protection tools.
Maxime Forest holds a PhD in Political Science and is specialized on gender equality policies. He is a senior researcher and lecturer at Sciences Po Paris and a senior expert and trainer for Yellow Window, a GEARING Roles partner. Lately, he has been the coordinator of the EGERA project (Effective Gender Equality and the Academia FP7, 2014-2017) and he is currently the principal evaluator of the SUPERA project (Supporting Equality in Research and the Academia, H2020). Under GEARING Roles, he is contributing to developing capacity-building contents and operating the helpdesk.
These guests were selected for the first episode which will seek to provide an introduction to the project. Maria will discuss her role, what she hopes to achieve with the implementation of the project overall including the development and application of the Gender Equality Plan at DEUSTO University. She will also discuss the activities of the project more broadly and what else we should expect to see over the next four years. Maxime on the other hand will discuss why gender equality in academia and projects such as GEARING Roles are so important, what else can be done to improve the situation as well as what the future is for Gender equality in Europe R&I
