The Importance of Storytelling in Driving Supply Chain Change and Improvement
The biggest barrier for moving supply chains forward is education and alignment on next-generation supply chain processes. Christian Sautter leads process improvement for Bayer Consumer Products in Switzerland and used the Supply Chain Insights training and the SCOR model to drive change through the pandemic. When the pandemic happened, there was no plan in the drawer at Bayer to drive change. Christian used the training experience on next generation supply chain processes along with empathy and human perspective to build a plan to help his company lead through the pandemic. A great case study of a Gen Y employee driving change.
Supply chain education should be the foundation of lasting change in the supply chain. However, building supply chain education programs is a barrier because the leaders in education do not see Supply Chain as a sexy or essential topic. Here we interview Ellen Joyce, Founder of the Digital Leader of Tomorrow in her journey to build educational programs for supply chain excellence.

Ninety percent of companies have inherited their supply chains and have focused on making the assets efficient. However, as many companies find out with the struggle with COV-19, the efficient supply chain (lowest cost per unit) is fragile in world events. This pandemic is a good opportunity to rethink supply chain strategy. In this podcast, Lora Cecere, Founder of Supply Chain Insights, coaches leaders to start with demand. Use consumption, not order data, and translate market demand with accuracy and the speed of business. One thing is clear, consumer demand is changing, and the order, and order history, will be a poor proxy to guide companies through this unprecedented times. Secondly, now is a good time to rethink the nodes of the supply chain and the roles each plays. Companies do not have one, instead they have many supply chains. Each requires demand and constant configuration based on demand. The greater the demand variability, the need to have fewer nodes and be closer to markets. Alignment also requires the rethinking of metrics, the role of the budget and the need for analytics.

In 2019 only 35% of manufacturing leaders rate their Sales and Operations Planning processes effective. In contrast, 65% rated the processes effective in 2016. In this podcast, Lora Cecere, founder of Supply Chain Insights shares the reasons for this precipitous decline. The remedy is enlightened leadership. To make the shift, companies need to define what defines supply chain excellence and how it ties to the business strategy. Then manage the supply chain as a complex non-linear system to ensure the recognition of constraints, the design of buffers, and the impact of changes in mix. Only 30% of companies have “what if analysis” and only 50% of companies tie the output of the tactical plan in S&OP to execution. As organizational complexity increases—with seven S&OP processes using five different technologies—getting the basics right matters more than ever.

With 95% of the industry stuck at the intersection of cost, customer service and inventory, Lora thinks that it is important to challenge the status quo. So if you are planning to go to industry events which often focus on functional excellence of source, make and deliver, consider stepping up to the plate to Imagine Supply Chain 2030 in an event designed for extreme networking of supply chain innovators.
