When we take time for teaching genre in primary grades, it's not just one more thing to teach on our already full plates. Learning to read is a journey and understanding genre can empower our students to keep searching for their next great read. Classroom Management and training your class in your expectations and systems is never a "one-and-done" process. I know you understand that, but it's easy to forget to reset or retrain your students throughout the year. Even your car needs a tune-up once in a while, why don't we remember to do the same for our classroom procedures? Perhaps you know someone who is resisting doing this. I've seen it before... teachers who think retraining seems like a lot of time when they have so little or they're stubbornly insisting their students know what to do so they should just do it, or some other reason. Whatever the reason, it's a lie. It's definitely time for a tune-up even if things are running well.

Using text evidence is a skill all students should have to effectively talk about a text and explain their thinking. Yes, even in primary grades! Bold words but true nonetheless.
Let me ask you this...How often do your students answer a question about a character, the setting or something about a text and they don’t know why or how they came to that conclusion? They have NO text evidence to support their thinking.
What about this one...Do you have students who have no idea where to find evidence in a text or even what text evidence is?
And one more...Does the idea of teaching your students to use evidence from the text to support their answers seem daunting?

I don’t believe we can teach real reading comprehension through online programs and online apps. There are 5 key elements that impact your students' reading comprehension. And your students need you, their teacher, to model, guide, and help them learn to incorporate the skills in their reading. What real teachers do is so valuable that it simply cannot be replaced by programs and apps. So save those programs and apps as reinforcement AFTER you've your students have learned the concepts, skills, and strategies.

While it's great to say be grateful, have a growth mindset, etc., that's not as easy to do as it is to say. We have to first understand how the brain really works. Just know this...84% of our words in the English language follow predictable rules. And research done in 1983 confirmed once again that only 24% of our words can be predicted through context.

Did you know…a student's phonic awareness skill is the BEST predictor of reading readiness and future reading development? So what is phonemic awareness? Phonemic awareness is…the ability to hear, differentiate and flexibly manipulate units of sound in spoken language. That means skills like rhyming, separating sounds, blending sounds, substituting sounds, deleting sounds or adding sounds. I know that sounds a lot like what you teach with phonics, right?! It's not the same thing although phonemic awareness and phonics do work together when we get all the pieces in place.

Let’s revisit the topic of student success from the expectations side of the equation. WHAT we teach is definitely a big part of student success but if that's all there was to it, most students across our nations would have already been successful. But as every teacher knows, teaching and student success are not that simple.
There's actually a couple of parts to student success. Part of this is HOW/WHAT you teach, part of it is the EXPECTATIONS that you set with your words and tone in your classroom and the last part is the EXPECTATIONS you set about specific students [even unconsciously] in your head by how you think about and speak about your students outside of class. Today, I'm sharing what I know about the expectations part of the student success equation.

Let’s talk about how we teach sight words. There are two camps with sight words – teach them and don’t. I’m just going to jump right in and tell you – I’m in the teach them camp.
Yes, there are many sight words your students can figure out. But there are just as many students that they can’t. Most sight words and their spellings don’t make sense to children. So, trying to decode them becomes a minefield.
