Sometimes we're inside the race and sometimes we're outside, but always around the Rochester, NY running scene and the community members who make it happen. If you run you, are a runner. If you are a runner, you have a story. These are the stories of our community. Hosted by Chris O'Brien.
In this episode we wander around the surprisingly busy Genesee Valley Park with Charlie Granger. Charlie is heading to Western States this year! But he’s been out west before this… Angeles Crest 100 was his first hundred miler. He’s from the San Gabriel mountains, so you know, it just made sense. As for locally, you may have seen Charlie around Twisted Branch 100k, Many on the Genny or maybe most recently at Cayuga Trails 50k. This was a fun experiment of a podcast, Charlie and I participate in a quite eventful day at Genesee Valley park and chat about how his training is going, how he plans (or doesn’t) for these big events and just some life things in general. And as you’ll see, both of us have a bit of a fun time trying to remember, well… anything from the past. So feel free to shout into the air as you hear us stumble through a bunch of “thought exercises” Special Guest: Charlie Granger.
Mark Valites ran the across New York State a few months ago. He set the first known Supported FKT (Fastest Known Time) running East to West on the NY Finger Lakes Trail. It’s 584 miles… ish. Who’s counting? And two of the main people that were along for the ride (and let’s face it, driving the bus) were John Ghidiu and Christy Post. We recount the highs and lows and lows of Mark's trip on this "hidden gem" of a trail. Christy, in addition to being an excellent runner (think, Muddy Sneaker, Mendon Trail 50 K, Many on The Genny, Breakneck Point, Twisted Branch), is also the recently minted Director of Marketing for the FLTC, Finger Lakes Trail Conference, the organization that does so much to ensure the Finger lakes Trail exists… and is really amping up their game to help everyone learn about this awesome trail that crosses the near entirety of New York. Super excited for a lot of what Christy is working on. John is … well… you’ll find out. John does a lot of things and the intros are already long enough. I’m not trying to sell him short. He just uses different words than I would use. So you should hear his. Anyway, in this episode, we’re going to talk about Mark’s FKT and some surprising outcomes from said adventure. Special Guests: Christy Post, John Ghidiu, and Mark Valites.
Todd and Sara ran their first marathon together. Like step by step together. At Disney. They do lots of things together. Except train for their marathon. Todd did many of his long runs with Rochester Running Company group runs (and more than a few Thursday runs with me and the group at ThreeHeads Brewery.) Sara likes to run alone. But yet they did their first marathon together. How? Well… let’s find out! Special Guests: Sara Brotsch and Todd Brotsch.
Josh Frankel and I get together to chat about bad decisions, good friends and combining the two can lead to really great times. We spend some time talking about how Josh got running and then we get into how he ended up doing longer distances by recapping the timeline of Josh’s races. And Josh has been in a lot of the good ones. From 5ks through half and full marathons and the onto ultras including the fabled hundred miler. (The alternate title for this episode was “I’m signed up for another one this year… but then, we uncovered the surprising truth of his favorite distance to run!) Special Guest: Josh Frankel.
Mitch’s race history reads like a guy who REALLY wants to win races. Who REALLY wants to get the most out of himself. Also, he doesn't really run ultras. And yet, his dream race is Leadville 100. Yes, a hundred miler out in Colorado. A race he surely had little chance of finishing, let alone winning. Why was that his dream race? And why are his dreams so long and 12,000 feet elevation? Maybe that's how he thought he could compete... at a higher level. [Cue Who Music] 😎 Special Guest: Mitch Ball.
Clem Chung tells about how he got started running somewhere around 2017, the things involved in planning self supported marathons and his “four year plan” to finish a hundred miler which culminated in his attempt at Mighty Mosquito 99 and striving to engineer the perfect run Special Guest: Clement Chung.
Abby McCarthy returns after what we discovered was a nearly 4 year absence from the podcast. She has a done a lot during that time. Including the Georgia Death Race, Ode to Laz Backyard Ultra… Twice and Mt. Hood and Cruel Jewel 50 milers. Oh yeah, she also hiked the entire Pacific Crest Trail and ran every street in Rochester. And certainly some other stuff that she forgot about. Special Guest: Abby McCarthy.
It’s been a few years in the making, but Garth Howell is finally on the podcast! James Castiglione comes along for the ride, as he would say. We cover some brief introductory topics such as a little bit about James and Garth got the way they are, and how we all met. Run Groups folks. Run Groups. And then we dig into Garth’s latest feat, Twisted Branch 100k. Special Guests: Garth Howell and James Castiglione.
Tom and Alyson Tighe got into Boston Marathon, New York City Marathon AND Western States in 2019. Almost too Perfect. Then 2020 happened. CANCELED! And now it's 2021 and racing is back! You won't believe what this couple is planning to do! [🙄 End clickbait description 🙄] Spoiler, They're doing all 3! Special Guests: Alyson Tighe and Tom Tighe.
Ellie Pell is back! (For some of you, it might seems like maybe she never left 🤣 ) Well, not only is Ellie back on the podcast, she is also back racing. She has banged out wins at Many on The Genny AND FL50s in the last month. But more importantly, she running around Rochester! That's right. She's left Gorges Ol' Ithaca for the ROC! Listen in as Ellie and I chat about the latest and greatest going on in her running world! Photo Credits: Cover Art - Ron Heerkens at Goat Factory Media Fireside Banner - Shea Coleman (Running MOTG), Ellie Pell (in situ), Laura Howard (Hamstrings and Heartstrings on the Twisted Branch Trail) Special Guest: Ellie Pell.
We stretch our mic cables all the way out to Ithaca, NY to chat with Pete Kresock. This episode has been a long-time coming and I'm super happy to finally have a chat with Pete. Pete is an ultra-runner and local scene advocate. Pete keeps is pretty real and always has an interesting take on things. He's done at least one 100 miler every year since 2015 and is very frequently at many of the smaller trail races. In this episode Pete and I cover Twisted Branch, Virgil Crest, the FLRC challenge, Race FOMO, as well diversions such as Star Wars and water fountain serendipity. Special Guest: Pete Kresock.
We've gathered the braintrust together to discuss all manner of things from Current Events to gear to beer. Mike Welden, Jamie Hobbs and Daven Oskvig sit in their respective corners in my sunroom, crack a few cold ones and share stories of what was, what is and what could be. Special Guests: Daven oskvig, Jamie Hobbs, and Mike Welden.
Phil Nesbitt phones in from “down south” to talk about what’s it’s like to be super fit and have no races to show it off. Heh. Kidding. Sort of. More importantly, Phil and I talk about the current state of the parks and the impact of COVID from his perspective at the NYS Park Police. We also talk about this being the year of his first 100 miler and what community, races and race directors mean to us. Special Guest: Phil Nesbitt.
Podcast inception! It’s a podcast within a podcast as Chris and Jeremy from We Run the Desert Podcast join to chat about the left coast, podcasting, running in 100 degree heat in May. It was a fun chat where we got to know each other a little bit and maybe brought two side of the country a little closer together. Many thanks to Jamie Shenck who had this idea and basically made it happen by relentlessly nagging me on by every means possible until I finally gave in. (Kidding, of course 😇) Thank You, Jamie!
Chris Patterson is back on the podcast and we talk about how to keep active and healthy (mentally and physically) without group, runs, motivating races and all those other 'normal things' we used to take for granted. What can we control these days? Chris is founder of Apex Performance Coaching. He is Level 1 coaching certified from USATF, Level 2 Coaching Certified from Road Runners of America, an uncannily, metronomic marathon pacer and even he is learning a little about running these days. Special Guest: Chris Patterson.
After years of discussing it, Greg and I finally reach out through the void and connect with each other for a recoring. (See, good things CAN happen in quaratine) In this wide ranging conversation, we discuss things like homework, stock investments, puzzles, beer, normalcy, the generosity of our community... oh... and some running. Special Guest: Greg Casto.
In this episode of the podcast, Krissy Moehl flies in to an undisclosed location deep in the heart of Brighton, NY to have a fireside chat. (originally recorded Feb 21, 2020) Special Guest: Krissy Moehl.
Jon Griffiths opened Rochester Running Company with the goal to Run Our City Together. In this episode of the podcast, he shares some of his background, the story of starting the store and the motivations and goals behind his continuous drive. We talk about golfing, sleeping (or not), life after marriage, and what really is needed to run a marathon. Special Guest: Jonathan Griffiths.
In this episode, I make the trip to Ithaca to see Ellie Pell in her natural habitat. We talk about her amazing 2019; Placing Top Woman in Buffalo Marathon and Many on The Genny, Winning Green Lakes 50k and Watergap 50k outright and then capping it all off with a 2:41 at Hartford Marathon which qualified her for the US Olympic Team Trials in Atlanta. Along the way we discuss imposter syndrome, shaking the blahs, celebrating the little victories, being grateful for every mile run, the benefits of running with fast people and just generally loving running. Special Guest: Ellie Pell.
Shea Coleman walks into the studio as if she didn’t even recently do a hundred miler. Shea recently completed Mighty Mosquito 99 (with the extra bonus mile) and so we are going to chat a bit about that as well as being a volunteer extraordinaire and her exciting plans for multisport events. Shea is a vegan unicorn ultra-runner who lives on a farm with horses and pigs and dogs and cats. We spend some time figuring out why it is that she does what she does, how she got there and where she might be going. But really, we just chat about the love of friends, running, and our awesome commnunity. Special Guest: Shea Coleman.
Rob Richard makes the long trip in from Little Falls, NY to share some stories of learning and finding perspective in running. Rob Richard is a life-long runner who lives in the charming city of Little Falls, NY. He ran his first ultra marathon in 2015 and has since finished over twenty endurance races, including the Bear 100, the Georgia Death Race (four times), the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB), and a first-place finish at The Endurance Society "Infinitus" 100-miler. Last year, he successfully completed a winter crossing of the Great Range Traverse in the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. Rob is the captain of a running club he founded, the "Rock City Runners," and he's very active in his community, serving on the boards of two non-profits as well as two City boards. Special Guest: Rob Richard.
Josh Rossi strongarms his way into the studio to talk about the importance of well… strength in running. For years, Josh has run a program called Muscles for Mileage… and now he is working out of his own gym Pursuit Performance (https://www.pursuitroc.com/). Josh thinks a lot about running and makes his opinions known about the need for more strength and conditioning in the running world. We chat about the importance or practice versus repetition, potential causes for highly active and established runners feeling dissatisfied with the running (TLD;DL Racing!) and what people can do to generally improve their fitness and possibly their self-esteem along with it. Special Guest: Josh Rossi.
Nate Huckle makes his way down the Thruway to chat about such things as racing, Muddy Sneaker, Oil Creek, Twisted Branch, coaching, mentoring, pacing, volunteering and anything that might come up... Nate has been a great friend, coach (at both Brighton High School in Rochester and Canisius College in Buffalo), and mentor to many people in the running community and constantly finds opportunities to give back and provide a positive influence wherever he may find himself, so I’m really happy to have him on the podcast to share some of his stories. Special Guest: Nate Huckle.
In this episode, Jennifer Belliveau comes back home to visit some family, hits up a trail for a quick run and pops into the studio to talk about running. Jennifer grew up in Rochester, but now lives down in Long Island and runs the New York Road Runner (NYRR) races with her running friends. We chat about 'being a runner' in High School, how running friends help you run all the miles, and trying to figure out exactly how one trains for a marathon without getting injured by finding the line between adding miles and over-usage. Special Guest: Jennifer Belliveau.
Hello and Welcome to the CoolDown, the special aftershow content for supporters of the Running Inside Out Podcast on Patreon. Now you may be saying to yourself… “Self, I am not on Patreon. I should not be hearing this extra bonus content.” And you would be right… except, I felt this was a good example of the kind of stuff that you can hear ‘behind the curtain’ and so the thinking goes, if you like what you hear, then click that link fam, get on the Patreon and slap down your digits to contribute to the financial well-being of the show. And if you don’t like what you hear, well, then that’s just like… your opinion. As always thank you all for listening and especially thank you to those that choose to contribute to the podcast… And now, enjoy your cool down. Special Guest: Jeff Beck.
Jeff Beck calls in from way out in Oklahoma City to share some stories from racing throughout Rochester back in his High School and college days and what he is up to now with coaching a new crop of runners and starting a family in Oklahoma. Now, Mort Nace and I hatched a plan to surprise Jeff with a call from Zach Rivers during the podcast. Zach and Jeff raced and trained together when Zach was just a high schooler and Jeff was a National level collegiate runner. They had some amazing training sessions and races together and so once Zach gets on the line, things get a lot more interesting. Special Guest: Jeff Beck.
Brooke Smith ambles into the studio to talk about all the usual stories about loving trail running, eating disorder recovery, quitting dieting, and making a decision to stop trying to change her body and instead run as far/fast as she can in the body that she has. As well as talking about her previous Twisted Branch, her upcoming Twisted Branch yoga and anything else that comes up. The RIO PodRacers are heading back to the Mighty Mosquito 99 (https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=61507). Come run with us. Here is our team! * Chris O'Brien * Jason Vidmar * Laura Rekkerth * Abby McCarthy * Daven Oskvig * Matt Bertrand *** Special Guest: Brooke Smith.
Despite the odds, the Earth has made it around the sun again and so it is time for Mike Welden to visit the studio. I wasn't sure what Mike had in store when he called me. In the end, it turned it wasn't anything to be afraid of; a little bit of running, a couple of laughs and good chat with a great person. Mike and I talk a little bit about Many On the Genny, Twisted Branch, and what it might look like if we all started being a bit more human to each other. As with most episodes featuring MIke, the language gets a little saucy, so keep away from sensitive ears if that isn't your thing. Special Guest: Mike Welden.
Calli ran as a member of the University of New Mexico Lobos. She is from Sheffield, UK and stopped by Rochester to run a 4:59 in the 2019 Rochester Mile. She likes Breakfast Burritos. 🌯 Special Guest: Calli Thackery.
You may have heard of a little Netflix documentary called "Barkley, the Race that eats its young" and if you are a trail or ultra runner, you may have even been asked if you ever ran or want to run Barkley. And if you are a silly person, you might even be thinking that you DO want to run Barkley someday. What you may not know is that we have two people from the Rochester Area that have run Barkley. In fact, 6 they have 6 attempts between the two of them! Tim Hardy and John Fegyveresi both ran the race in 2012. John is one of the races only 15 finishers. Tim has finished races like Arrowhead 135, Badwater, And Massanutten Mountain and yet was portrayed as 'the human sacrifice' in the movie. Well thanks to Greater Rochester Track Club, Tim and John gave us a view behind the curtain. Special Guests: John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy.
Karen Howe recently ran a 3:08 at Boston. A PR by 2 minutes, at the age of 42. What's the secret? Well, she takes a day out of her recovery schedule to talk about her recent run as part of Team MR8. We talk about how a combination of planning, positivity, stubborness, coaching, and consistency is helping her get faster as she gets older! Special Guest: Karen Howe.
Lisa Famiglietti drops in to talk about being coerced into spontaneous racing, the joy (and coercion) of running groups, and how she hasn't ran a marathon (yet.) Then we explore the menus and beers of our favorite cities. Lisa's first ever race was a borrowed bib, her most recent race was a borrowed bib, get the picture? She can frequently be found running with (and wearing the colors of) Rochester Running Company. She brought me Fifth Frame and TreeHouse Beers. She works in TV and usually keeps a tight schedule, so she wanted to make this brief and tidy... but she brought beers... so we disavowed her of that notion pretty quickly. Enjoy! (and don't play the "Drink every time you hear Rochester Running Company" game while listening... please... for everyone's safety.) Special Guest: Lisa Famiglietti.
Laura Rekkerth made her way to 74 peaks last year. Daven Oskvig has run more than 70 ultras, finishing many on the podium. Tim Kent is a purposeful training machine setting an example for the next generation. Laura Webber is a family oriented adventure racer who did a 24 hour mountain bike relay race with her husband Ian while their 1 and 3 year old served as crew. They each were kind enough to share their experiences and motivations running and getting outside as well as humoring me during some of my more … interesting lines of questioning. Special Guests: Daven oskvig, Laura Rekkerth, Laura Webber, and Tim Kent.
Prem Kumar and Daniel Knopp are joining with Work, a non-profit organization, to run across Haiti. Their goal is to show that Haiti is not a place to be feared or pitied and to raise funds for our work in ending poverty in Menelas through dignified jobs. Prem and Dan have raised over $13,000 and will be running 200 miles in 8 days. In this episode they share their motivations for the run as well as their hopes and fears. Ultimately, they aim to share a message of hope and inspiration. [Note: Since this recording, Work anoounced the difficult decision to postpone the run due to demonstrations in Haiti. The run will still take place but will most likely be later in the spring. In talking with Dan and Prem, we still felt we should still release the episode as the goal was to get the word out about Haiti and it seemed more appropriate now than ever.] Special Guests: Daniel Knopp and Prem Kumar.
Mark Valites climbs into the guest chair to talk of everything outdoors. In this wide-ranging conversation we cover trails in and around Buffalo, NY, running 100 milers throughout the country and you can hear my fascination as I interrogate Mark about ice climbing! The show notes for this episode are fairly comprehensive as are the locations on Mark's Guest Page (https://www.runninginsideoutpodcast.com/guests/mark-valites). He even issues and FKT challenge! Special Guest: Mark Valites.
Katie Gailey shows up out of the blue to talk about how she got herself involved in the crazy world of ultra running. For those of you that don’t know, in 2017 Katie found the trails and then started running some of the biggest ultras around... we're talking Many on the Genny, Cayuga 50 and even Twisted Branch 100k... plus some other crazy stuff... Special Guest: Katie Gailey.
Erica Mead rushes in to talk about her running. We really focus in on how Erica has 'grown and matured' as she has gotten older. Erica ran a lot of hard fast miles in 2017 and while fun, resulted in her spending the first half of 2018 recovering from a major injury and finishing it with a 50k in Canada. Now it's 2019 and her injury is behind her. So now what? Special Guest: Erica Mead.
Mark Streb sprints into the studio to quickly tell us some of his running stories. We chat about going from being a lazy kid to running in two Chase Corporate Challenge World Championships. We also talk about Road Kill Racing, Cross Country, and Snowshoe running. Special Guest: Mark Streb.
Scott Parr joins to talk about what got him into the world of running, pushing the limits of his body and finding fun in the suffering. Scott had a pretty awesome 2018 that included three pretty big ultras in Many on the Genny, Cayuga Trails and Twisted Branch. In addition to 2018 memories, he drops some pretty big plans for the future as well. 071_Scott_Parr_DamGood https://uploads.fireside.fm/images/0/04dc5a6a-32ff-45bb-8b25-9b777b81a4c8/20yNqDTx.jpg Ripping up the trails at Dam Good 2013! The tables are turned for the 2nd time ever on the podcast. Jamie Hobbs convinced me to be other the other side of the mic and so, ... In this episode, Chris O'Brien (me) joins to talk about Oil Creek 100k. Listen in to find out what happens when a podcast host does exactly the bare minimum training and even less planning for an ultra! (Spoiler: His friends all pitch in to bail him out!) Special Guest: Jamie Hobbs.
Jen DiSalvo joins me in the studio to tell us her story of quitting smoking and starting running to be a healty mom for her family. She went from couch to 5k, from 5k to half marathon and from half marathons to ultra... and this year was 3 ultras in 3 months. Jen is one of only 4 people to complete the inaugural Empire State Triad. 3 ultras, Many on the Genny (40 miles in June), Cayuga Trails (50 miles in July) and Twisted Branch Trail Run (100k in August.) Josh Stratton wanders in to talk about his solo, unsupported Adirondack 46er Fastest Known Time. There are 46 peaks in NY over 4,000 feet. Climbing them all makes you a 46er. Climbing them faster than anyone else gives you the FKT. Climbing them by eating little more than RunGum makes you Josh Stratton.
Jamie Hobbs is here to talk about the Big Dance. That's right, Mr. Hobbs Goes to Western States. Special Guest: Jamie Hobbs.
Mike Welden is back. Like literally. Last we heard from Mike, he had just run a smokin 13:34 at Laurel Highlands Ultra. And then, nothing. Where'd he go, what'd he do? Turns out, those answers are "everywhere" and "a lot", mostly. It's complicated. Listen in as Mike, in typical Welden-esque fashion weaves us the tale of a 2017 gone awry and a 2018 on the cusp. Steven Dailey marches in and gives us the scoop on how he finds his running mojo.
Steven and I talk about how running is exactly like the military; Strict, regimented, hierarchical and full of long stretches of boredom. hold for shock value
Actually, we talk about the exact opposite. Steven shares his thoughts on how running has opened his eyes to a world that is completely different from his time in the Army. And yet how running helped him during his time serving our country. We talk about some other stuff too, but you should listen to find out what that's all about.

Jen Malik chat's about roads, snakes, roads, sticks that looks like snakes. But seriously, Jen is a fastie who has won some marathons (one before and one after having a baby!) and placed pretty high in some long trail races (2nd at Sehgahunda, 3rd in Twisted Branch) even though she runs (and trains!) only on roads and considers herself a novice on the trails. Listen in as she nearly convinces me to run down the (probably not imaginary) yellow brick road with her.

Voices From the TrailMedVed Running & Walking OutfittersOriginally recorded March 30, 2017
The third occurrence of this distinguished event did not disappoint. Mort Nace and Medved once again gathered a distinguished panel of runners, assembled an interested community and provided a comfortable space for many stories to be told. Mort Nace brought the community together for an evening of sharing the passion and joy that comes with being a runner out in the woods.
After an introduction by Mort, a panel of 7 voices, Mitch Ball, Matt Smythe, Sharon Radak, Joe Packard, Jamie Hobbs and Sarah Keyes, treated us to tales of real life adventures and beyond words imagination that kept us all rapt with attention well into the night.
Running Inside Out was once again given the opportunity to participate and record the discussion. Hope you enjoy it.

The Appalachian Trail, Twisted Branch, and Georgia Death Race are just a few of Abby McCarthy's exploits. On this episode, Abby and I discuss walking 2186 miles without any experience, and why she likes traveling excessive distances on foot, even though she doesn't like to be uncomfortable.
Special Guest: Abby McCarthy.
Cayley Hallahan shares the story of her first half marathon… which she ran after having open heart surgery. As one can imagine, one can learn a lot about life while waiting for heart surgery. And so, Cayley gives us a small lesson in modern day cardiology. Specifically, the Ross Procedure and Aortic Stenosis. And then we get into what it was like on race day at the Oak Tree half marathon.

Jamie Hobbs returns to talk about his drive to run 100 miles as well as how squeezes in 100 mile training while being a dedicated husband and a role model dad. He's 43 and running as well as he ever has, so there are probably some gems of wisdom in here. Take notes. Jamie was the subject of a #BeastCoast film, episode 4 "Forged in Mountains" and we talk a bit about that too! We also get into him running the Massanutten Mountain 100... so there's that!

Since he was last on the podcast, Valone has joined the board of TrailsRoc, organized two fatass races and some weird 'adventure runs'. He has also learned a lot about himself, his place in the community and inspired hundreds of people along the way.

You've worked hard and put in the training. For months your weekends have revolved around your long runs. You've dialed in your nutrition and monitored your sleep. Now, your big race is less than a month away, you are starting your taper and going a bit crazy.
Or maybe you just ran your big race and were On Top Of The World, but then the next morning, you felt a bit empty, or lonely or directionless.
In this Special Event, recorded at Medved, Stacey Steinmiller of Authentic Self-Counseling, tells us, "It's Okay", provides us with some context as to why we experience these feelings, and gives us some thoughtful tips for helping manage Taper Anxiety and Kicking the Post-Race Blues.
Please review this handout that was provided. It is referenced quite regularly by Stacey throughout the talk.

Between mouthfuls of oatmeal, Mike Welden recounts his long, tortuous path to the Laurel Highlands 70 mile race this past June. From a high-octane skiing accident in Canada to breaking into the track at a maximum-security all-girl’s school, Mike’s penchant for the unconventional and utterly ridiculous makes for a gripping story.
It’s not all jokes, though. Throughout the episode, Mike also shares his experience with a new coach, reworking his racing mentality, and a raw, honest look at the ultrarunning experience.

Erica also took the leap of letting me coach her through the second half of her training plan. Which I greatly appreciated. It was a lot of fun seeing her reach her goal (even though I had to see it in pouring rain.)

In addition to the adventure racing background, GOOSE is responsible for some of the most frequently discussed races on the podcast from the near ancient Muddy Sneaker (going strong for 18 years) to the newly hatched Ontario Summit Trail Races (growing strongly into it's 3rd year)
It's a long episode but that's because these guys are long on experience.
