Made You Look: Recent Episodes

That's Not Canon Productions

The TV shows we watch say a lot about us. A cynical person might prefer light-hearted comedies as an antidote to the crushing existential weight of their everyday life. A former youth-group leader might be obsessed with religious iconography and pop-culture depictions of the devil. People are weird, and it shows in their Netflix queues. Made You Look is a podcast that tries to work out why we love the things we love. And if Jane and Kurt have to watch each other's favourite TV shows to do it... They're willing to make that sacrifice.  One week Jane will select an episode of one of her favourite shows for Kurt to watch. He'll recap it, try to figure out the missing pieces, and then comes the criticism. Together they parse out the episode in detail, touching on world-building, story construction, theme, production context and personal connection. The following week it's Jane's turn...

Play your cards just right and you might even enjoy this week's episode, all about Yu-Gi-Oh!

Is it any surprise that an episode about a children's show based on a card game based on a Manga leads to a great deal of frustration? If you're a fan of this classic Anime (like Kurt is) then you should be prepared to hear Jane complain about... pretty much everything! From the over-explained characterisations, indistinct motivations, to the basic assumption of children's stupidity that seems to be at the heart of this tv show. Before we kick off season 8, here's one more clipshow, featuring snippets of episodes you almost definitely haven't heard!

The excerpts in this ep come from:

Episode 19 - in an episode that was technically about Crazyhead, we discuss the many haircuts of Thor, God of Thunder.

Episode 21 - Jane literally yells about male privilege and the patriarchy as related to Commander in Chief.

Episode 33 - Kurt explains faith-based reactions to painful life experiences in the From Dusk till Dawn episode.

Episode 14 - Some people lick faces... others don't. This fabulous discussion brought to you by Wonderfalls.

Episode 54 - Unsurprisingly, Kurt has diffiiculty distinguishing the names of the Charmed Ones.

Episode 39 - We use our exceptionally limited knowledge of philosophy to talk about The Trolley Problem, as brought up in The Good Place.

We'll be back in next week with Season 8!

On our second Holiday BONUS EPISODE of Made You Look, we watch everyone's troupe of intrepid babies, the Rugrats!

In this episode we attempt to educate ourselves on both holidays (probably poorly, corrections welcome), and look at the the importance of family and community in different cultural celebrations. Nostalgia meets realism this week, when we discuss one of Jane's favourite literary heroines in Anne with an E.

In this episode we discuss (with little to no knowledge) the history of queer communities in turn-of-the-century Canada, and question the heteronormative default. We also examine intergenerational tension that comes from changing societal expectations, and how trauma can manifest itself in a detachment from reality, or an overactive imagination. Roll up your sleeves and spin yourself up from the dead - this week we're talking about Netflix Original series Altered Carbon!

In this ep, Kurt really tests the limits of Jane's squeamishness with a show heavy on the violence, prompting discussions on the role of fear in the efficacy of torture, and Kurt's obsession with watching his favourite characters get physically hurt. We also talk about Robert K. Morgan's toxic masculinity, and the long-term ramifications of the adoption and normalisation of technology. Sounds like a hoot, right? There's some serious philosophical stuff in here that we are both gorssly underqualified to discuss. Enjoy!

Millenium angst meets metaphorical alienation in this week's Made You Look, when Jane makes Kurt watch Roswell, New Mexico.

This week's episode delves into the controversial topic of the Reboot, and examines the way in which an old story can be made new again by its recontextualisation. We discuss small-town dynamics, how the personal is political and praise the show on some good, solid and rare LGBTQIA representation.

It's trash, okay. We know it's trash. But Jane still loves Dance Moms and has qualms about making Kurt watch it in this week's Made You Look. This episode dives deep into the emotional manipulation of reality television, both toward the participants and the viewers, and about the lack of resolution in the episode structure. But Jane's extensive history as a dance teacher overtakes the episode, and she tells the long and sordid tale of The Great Dance School Split of 2005.

Don't drop dead with shock - this week Kurt makes Jane watch Six Feet Under and we'd hate for you to miss it!

We chat about one of the earliest HBO 'prestige dramas' this week, trying to work out the difference between a realistic human and a functional character and exploring complex mother-daughter relationships. We also discuss whether this show is successfully ambitious, or just bites off more than it can chew.

Is there a more iconic duo in the entire history of television, than Scully and Mulder? Listen to us try and work that out on this week's Made You Look, when we chat about The X-Files.

It's a classic tale of good versus evil (or is it?) when Kurt makes Jane watch Dominion on Made You Look this week.

Revisit a familiar paradigm - Kurt (a former pentecostal Christian) trying to get Jane (a lifelong atheist and existentialist) to understand and enjoy shows with a strong biblical basis. This week on the pod we chat about storylines that lack a satisfying conclusion, trope-tastic retellings of myths and bible stories, and the unique combination of wooden acting and weird accents that makes this show... special.

The facts have been checked, the sources validated, now it's time to go to print on this episode of Made You Look, where Jane makes Kurt watch Press Gang!

No tights, no flights and not a lot of Eyes either when we revisit Smallville this week.

This is a rough one for poor old Kurt when Jane really pulls apart one of his fave nostalgia-driven shows. Together we pull apart gaping plot holes, discuss secret identities as a coming-out analogy, and try futilely to connect Alexandre Dumas' literary works to this superpowered teen drama.

Stock up on tissues and put your tablespoons in the freezer, because we're chatting about the tear-jerking teen-drama Party of Five.

In this episode we're going to reflect on manifestations of trauma in children, growing up too fast, unconventional family dynamics and, most importantly, Charlie's hair. There's also an extensive reminiscence about pillow forts and sleeping in loungerooms, so sorry about that.

Chaos! Destruction! Tears! It's not a disaster movie, but we do talk about human disasters in this week's tv show, You're the Worst.

It gets a little heated in this episode, when we talk about distinctive yet consistent aesthetics, destructive relationships (and why Kurt gets such pleasure out of watching them) and how normalising different body types is essential in today's media.

We tackle messy teen emotion in this week's Made You Look, when we look back at ground-breaking 90's drama My So-Called Life.

This seminal coming-of-age tale brings about such topics as intricate friendship dynamics, painfully realistic character development and the inter-generational mimicry of gender dynamics. Don't worry, it's less heavy than it sounds.

Welcome back to Made You Look! This week we revisit British horror series In the Flesh, to chat about zomb- sorry... Partially-Deceased Syndrome Sufferers.
