The Painted Dog has roamed the earth for millions of years. They lived throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Less than 100 years ago, they were about 500,000 strong. Today less than 5000 remain and their very existence is threatened forever.
The Pink Dolphin is a fresh water RIVER dolphin living in the Rivers of Bolivia. This amazing mammal is threatened by civilization, the debris from building and sediment that clogs the rivers that hold them hostage. Both of these incredible creatures have a champion. For 25 years, Dr. Greg Rasmussen has studied and lived among the Painted Dog. For 12 years, Dr. Enzo Aliaga Rossel has been the lone voice advocate to keep the pink dolphin not just as a treasured icon of Bolivia but a ALIVE too!
Both scientists have their respective projects featured on the website of an organization called Endangered Species or ES REVENGE
ES Revenge, was founded and is run by it's PresidentPeter Gottesman, who felt strongly that bringing humor to wildlife conservation would attract millions of people to join the fight to save animals. The organization creates cute videos like the one's below that make people laugh while teaching them about animal biology and behavior, and it seems to be working.
Their goal is to partner with leading conservation scientists to raise money for urgent projects that protect endangered animals and help local people economically and specifically seek out scientists who lead small to medium-sized grassroots non-profits, which spend nearly all their money on fieldwork, with little overhead, like my Two guests today. Betsy Kalin is an award-winning producer/director/writer at Itchy Bee Productions and Bluewater Media and her latest documentary, East LA Interchange has already won ten jury and audience awards to date. In 2016, she was the recipient of the Los Angeles City Historical Society’s J. Thomas Owen Award for illuminating L.A. history.
In her documentary East LA Interchange, Betsy explores the neighborhood of Boyle Heights, a city that was once one of the most diverse city's throughout the USA, a microcosm where Latinos, Asians, African-Americans, and the largest settlement of Jews west of Chicago lived and worked together side by side. Targeted by government policies, real estate laws and California planners, Boyle Heights was thrown to wolves when City Planners decided to build one of the world’s busiest freeway interchanges joining together Interstate 5, Interstate 10, US Route 101, and California Route 60. Boyle Heights is a testament to endurance. It's residents understand struggle but they are also resilient. Will it continue to thrive? Can it survive gentrification and environmental pollution? See what can happen when a community works towards the common good. This film took 9 years to come to fruition.
Betsy’s films have been honored with multiple awards at festivals around the world. Her first film, Roof, premiered at New York City’s MoMA for New Directors/New Films and is a part of the Short Shorts compilation. Her feature-length documentary, Hearts Cracked Open premiered to great acclaim at the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival and has won several awards. She produced and wrote the feature documentary Before Homosexuals with John Scagliotti, the Emmy award-winning executive producer of PBS’s In the Life. In 2010 she made Chained!, a short documentary that screened in festivals around the world, about the lives of Lesbian women who define themselves through their chains. and in 2013 produced the award-winning narrative film Click. Betsy received a BA in Women’s Studies from Columbia College at Columbia University and an MFA in Directing from the University of Miami. She is a featured speaker at conferences, universities, film festivals and community events.

Also, Marcia Tulluch, founder of the Gerdine Graham Foundation appeals to the Black Caribbean Community , to donate blood and get on the stem cell registry as there is a particular leukemia that affects their culture and recently, several young folks have all died suddenly.
The Gerdine Grahma Foundation is looking to raising money for the hospital where Gerdine Graham herself passed away in Jamaica from Leukemia. This hospital is in desperate need of the basics as in microscope, urine analysis, air conditioning.
