Reflection questions to support personal statement writing: https://thelearningcode.school.blog/2021/10/21/what-do-you-want-to-be-when-you-grow-up-is-a-horrible-question/ How to get paid to learn: https://thelearningcode.school.blog/2021/07/23/get-paid-to-learn-six-practices-to-earn-scholarships/ What students learn when we focus on Equity... https://jeffandersonmath.wordpress.com/2021/12/10/grade-for-equity-as-a-college-math-instructor-round-2/ Educators whether that be the humans in the Financial Aid / Scholarship Department or the professors of your courses are performing weekly miracles and delivering exceptional service just to stay sane... while doing the best they can given what they know, how they were treated, and why they are here. Always actively and consciously, be curious, kind, empathetic, and thoughtful when engaging with others. This is a learned skill that you have the opportunity to develop in every interaction with another human. This is in essence what keeps humanity moving forward rather than backward. Affirmation: Personnel is Policy, we are the system - recognize we are the institution, we are the knowledge holders. Say "I am an institution, I'm a school, I'm a library" not with hubris, but with humility... b/c we know that 1st generation, Black Indigenous Students of Color, hold schools & libraries within them. Each of you have the ability to empower the people the people in your lives, we believe in you! I hope this chat inspires you to read the hyperlinks in the description and inspires you to do your own research about the scholarship journey. Doing well in your classes and reflecting on how those classes will matter in your near / far future is a beautiful act of scholarship.

The longer you wait for the future, the shorter it will be. May we remember to extend our family friends, mentor mentees, and even adversaries, Grace.

Jennifer's youtube description pasted here:

This is a special one for me. This was one of the first songs my Grandmother taught me to sing. We lost her in the November of 2015 and I regularly wonder if she would have been proud of me and the music I now make. As you probably know by now music is a very emotional thing for me and so when I recorded this one I tried to picture myself singing this for my Grandmother, and that she was right there beaming with pride. ✨ Join my Patreon community for Zoom hangouts and exclusive updates: https://www.patreon.com/jenniferowens Stream/download my covers and originals on Spotify/Apple/Amazon etc. with this link: https://smarturl.it/JOMusic Instagram: @jenniferowensmusic Tik Tok: @jenniferowens_ Facebook: @jenniferowensmusic

Educators and Students, remember you are not a One Man Band.

In preparation for leading the learning STEM segment of the TechCore Summer institute 2021 at FH, for our first gathering, I will play a sample of this song to remind us to harmonize together. I will not and can not be a One Man Band. We have a lot to offer our families, communities, and the world when we engage in deep learning of stem, so let's learn in reflection, collaboration, and solidarity.

This is a narration of the blog post entitled What is deep learning? We discuss working definitions of learning, deep learning, and shallow learning. We explore the idea that deep learning involves two separate tasks: understanding and remembering. We also explore 5 useful strategies for improving your ability to remember ideas as you learn deeply. We also present 4 less-than-optimal strategies that lead to diminished capacity to recall ideas and result in shallower learning. We end this post with some challenges to our Learning Code community to build your own knowledge from this discussion. Remember: you can learn anything. When you work hard using effective learning strategies, when you have the courage to make mistakes, reflect on your errors, and make corrections, your brain grows and you build new skills. Si se puede (Yes you can!).

A msg Don wrote me an hour after our talk:

I was already well prepared for those semesters when I had school, work, and club projects simultaneously. I already had many of the dots connected, and I could relatively easily pinpoint the holes in my knowledge and how to fill them. This helped estimate how long it would take to learn each individual lesson or do some task or homework. Also, my knowledge from Formula SAE already covered a lot of the content both in classes and in my job. A bunch of my time ended up being just busywork of going through the motions to reinforce things I already knew, and only a smaller and more manageable amount of my time involved learning new things. The same goes for that day when you saw me taking notes quickly and only half paying attention while writing down a lot of information. I already understood most of the concepts covered in that talk, and I would only tune in 100% when I heard something that I wasn't really familiar with. I already had a mental model ready to go and all my relevant life experiences up until that point had prepared me to go in ready to just learn a little bit more, rather than needing to learn from square 1 every little detail. If there's anything that you could highlight in post editing or in the comments or video/audio descriptions, I'd say its the amount of work that I put in beforehand on my own time that made the actual class, project, or job significantly easier.

I wrote a more comprehensive/contemplative version of this podcast here:

https://thelearningcode.school.blog/2021/01/08/human-capital/

Please leave a comment at the bottom of the blog piece to help me empower you...

Excerpt: So it’s quite natural to work at one of these large companies. But when human capital goes there, what products are they working on? It’s like unfettered free agents. Imagine you had a pro sports league with no salary cap. What would you do? You would go and hire and sign every single ‘great’ player and stick them on the bench (lol). You’d be guaranteed to win a championship, you’d be a monopolistic championship winner year in year out.

At 14 years old, Hamilton became a clerk at the import-export firm where he charted routes for ships, and tracked goods - some of those ships included slaves - his abolitionist leanings later in life were influenced by what he experienced. What have you seen and how do you plan on truncating bigotry, prejudice, or partisanship

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda www.HamiltonMusical.com

[AARON BURR] How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten Spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished, in squalor Grow up to be a hero and a scholar? [JOHN LAURENS] The ten-dollar Founding Father without a father Got a lot farther by working a lot harder By being a lot smarter By being a self-starter By fourteen, they placed him in charge of a trading charter [THOMAS JEFFERSON] And every day while slaves were being slaughtered and carted Away across the waves, he struggled and kept his guard up Inside, he was longing for something to be a part of The brother was ready to beg, steal, borrow, or barter [JAMES MADISON] Then a hurricane came, and devastation reigned Our man saw his future drip, dripping down the drain Put a pencil to his temple, connected it to his brain And he wrote his first refrain, a testament to his pain [BURR] Well, the word got around, they said, “This kid is insane, man” Took up a collection just to send him to the mainland “Get your education, don’t forget from whence you came, and The world's gonna know your name. What’s your name, man?” [ALEXANDER HAMILTON] Alexander Hamilton My name is Alexander Hamilton And there's a million things I haven't done But just you wait, just you wait... [ELIZA HAMILTON] When he was ten his father split, full of it, debt-ridden Two years later, see Alex and his mother bed-ridden Half-dead sittin' in their own sick, the scent thick...

"Aaron Burr, Sir" from the musical HAMILTON

Performed by Alex Lacamoire, Anthony Ramos, Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr., Lin-Manuel Miranda, Okieriete Onaodowan

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda www.HamiltonMusical.com

[COMPANY] 1776. New York City [HAMILTON] Pardon me. Are you Aaron Burr, sir? [BURR] That depends. Who’s asking? [HAMILTON] Oh, well, sure, sir I’m Alexander Hamilton, I’m at your service, sir I have been looking for you [BURR] I’m getting nervous [HAMILTON] Sir… I heard your name at Princeton. I was seeking an accelerated course of study when I got sort of out of sorts with a buddy of yours. I may have punched him. It’s a blur, sir. He handles the financials? [BURR] You punched the bursar [HAMILTON] Yes! I wanted to do what you did. Graduate in two, then join the revolution. He looked at me like I was stupid, I’m not stupid So how’d you do it? How’d you graduate so fast? [BURR] It was my parents’ dying wish before they passed [HAMILTON] You’re an orphan. Of course! I’m an orphan God, I wish there was a war! Then we could prove that we’re worth more Than anyone bargained for… [BURR] Can I buy you a drink? [HAMILTON] That would be nice [BURR] While we’re talking, let me offer you some free advice Talk less [HAMILTON] What? [BURR] Smile more [HAMILTON] Ha [BURR] Don’t let them know what you’re against or what you’re for [HAMILTON] You can’t be serious [BURR] You wanna get ahead? [HAMILTON] Yes [BURR] Fools who run their mouths off wind up dead [LAURENS] Yo yo yo yo yo! What time is it? [LAURENS/LAFAYETTE/MULLIGAN] Show time! [BURR] Like I said… [LAURENS] Show time! Show time! Yo! I’m John Laurens in the place to be! Two pints o’ Sam Adams, but I’m workin’ on three, uh! Those redcoats don’t want it with me! Cuz I will pop chick-a pop these cops till I’m free! [LAFAYETTE] Oui oui, mon ami, je m’appelle Lafayette! The Lancelot of the revolutionary set! I came from afar just to say “Bonsoir!” Tell the King “Casse toi!” Who’s the best? C’est moi! [MULLIGAN] Brrrah brraaah! I am Hercules Mulligan Up in it, lovin’ it, yes I heard ya mother said “Come again?” [LAFAYETTE & LAURENS] Ayyyyy [MULLIGAN] Lock up ya daughters and horses, of course It’s hard to have intercourse over four sets of corsets… [LAFAYETTE] Wow [LAURENS] No more sex, pour me another brew, son! Let’s raise a couple more… [LAURENS/LAFAYETTE/MULLIGAN] To the revolution! [LAURENS] Well, if it ain’t the prodigy of Princeton college! [MULLIGAN] Aaron Burr! [LAURENS] Give us a verse, drop some knowledge! [BURR] Good luck with that: you’re takin’ a stand You spit. I’m ‘a sit. We’ll see where we land [LAFAYETTE/MULLIGAN] Boooo! [LAURENS] Burr, the revolution’s imminent. What do you stall for? [HAMILTON] If you stand for nothing, Burr, what’ll you fall for? [MULLIGAN/LAFAYETTE/LAURENS] Ooh Who you? Who you? Who are you? [MULLIGAN/LAFAYETTE/LAURENS] Ooh, who is this kid? What’s he gonna do?

I share my voice: for all who still feel undervalued for the grades on their transcripts and the color of their skin - here at TLC the race is 1 ... and it's the human race.

Together, we will continue to work toward the promise of transformative change and the realization of a more just and equitable society.

Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity more radically than the power hierarchies that be... 1 way is from within the system, and working along the fringes... Challenge the Status Quo... Reflect on your Values... Get those Grades and Degrees... 1 class at a time.

LYRICS

What's wrong with the world, mama

People livin' like they ain't got no mamas

I think the whole world's addicted to the drama

Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma

Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism

But we still got terrorists here livin'

In the USA, the big CIA

The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK

But if you only have love for your own race

Then you only leave space to discriminate

And to discriminate only generates hate HIGH

And when you hate then you're bound to get irate LOW

Madness is what you demonstrate

And that's exactly how anger works and operates HIGH

Man, you gotta have love just to set it straight

Take control of your mind and meditate

Let your soul gravitate to the love,

People killin', people dyin'

Children hurt and you hear them cryin'

Can you practice what you preach?

Or would you turn the other cheek?

Father, Father, Father help us

Send some guidance from above

people got me, got me questionin'

Where is the love (The love)

Where is the love (The love)

Where is the love, the love, the love, the love, the love where is the love the love

The amount of research and work available now to get a Ph.D. exceeds the scope of a lifetime... This was not the case when PhDs were first granted. According to Keith Allan Noble (1994), the first doctoral degree was awarded in medieval Paris around 1150 by the University of Paris. 23:00 revisionist history howard zinn - historical perspective of native tribes - approach in history re-write the perspective of historical framework perspective of local communities - the historical framework shifts - entire mechanism shifts there - in education the paradigm of education in 1700th century mindset - highly celebrates privileged individuals uncommon access to information in uncommon ways - revisionist history von neuman were privileged in their lives entire systems in society assume that privilege and celebrates it.

25:00 two lives happening simultaneously - staged life in academia not aligned in physical life assumptions of academic life tied into privilege - takes counter pressure to overcome privilege barriers to engage in that space -

26:30 structure of phd education did not exist until 1940s - look at first phds - the amount of research that is available - 70 years of academic work w 100s 1000s people doing it - phd candidate 2020 - amount of information a phd candidate has to process in 1960 but structure of degree has not changed much of the dominant paradigm - we really have to transform the entire ed sys so someone now can marinate on the idea

29:00 5-6 years in undergraduate or change last 2 years in hs so last 2 years you get to specialize - instead of having to figure out everything you have to do - allow those structures to change al ittle bit - amazing nature of the academic work to be produced - the scholars who control the process just bc they went through emotional pain doesn’t make them special

30:00- as we navigate those spaces of teaching jobs academic systems based on current systems have no mechanisms to be offered to you in that space - that challenge is - navigate those pressures while keeping those larger questions alive - student centered system - Raj Chetti has audacity to believe that

33:00 Jeff’s aunt daughters husband study bird - Jeff thought he shouldn’t have PhD at 28 the end of my PhD they put a baby a drivers seat - structure of your life - he was trying to finish his degree as a dad

35:00 Duckworth, Robin DeAngelo Dan Meyer

38:00 If jeff thought about this degree on a year to year basis are there any projects I can do in my personal life - eliminating martial arts - addicted to martial arts - first entered my mind vs

40:00 current generations of students has no idea of all the successes,

43:02Amplify Balaram’s Voice While Democratizing Jeff’s Guidance!

58:00 build a purpose - strategic deep learners to think about long term purpose if there’s no food on the table if you don’t have shelter or light in the home - engineers - in our ways to be - learning needs hierarchy - carve out some extra space to do that higher level of thinking

1:11:00 seek out a relatively constant stream of information outside of the academic degree that informs the way i think about myself

1:13:00 when thinking about purpose it’s not a destination - Jeff’s 50th draft can be considered second draft - what i want my life to include in the long run human being change on a daily basis as you get older your interest are gonna change life circumstances - recognizing purpose

1:20:00 purpose is most meaningful when it’s above economic activity it’s the benefit our communities that may be people our environment other living beings - value energy minimize suffering and maximize suffering - the closer i get to explicit answers on that the more daily actions

Comedy Sketch on Genius

The Transcript I wrote:

How do you tell a big idea is really a genius idea? Hint, it involves eyebrows.

Genius is solving a problem that others don’t think is a problem. Jeff Anderson’s Conquering College project is genius because not many people in his community wanna invest in cooperative learning, modeling and demonstrating what study skills & learning habits yield for students at large. Geniuses are 1s that are willing to be daring, and surely this involves some pushback since they’re going against the grain, the grain that is the dominant rhetoric & narrative, aka iphone 20 or the next tesla in the lab.

Now you might be thinking how do I go against the grain and become a genius? this is difficult to do when we’re stuck in this efficient vs. urgent limbo known as college education. Most students have been conditioned to do the least they have to, to "get grades", so you might think of this as efficient. but when courses get tougher, and life gives you lemons of more responsibilities and freedoms, that efficiency becomes overwhelmed by urgency. The urgent feeling of doing what we need to do to actually learn in our courses.

Seth Godin wrote: 1 difference between science and art: If you can NOT replicate the work and get the same outcome, then it’s not science.

If you can replicate the work and get the same outcome, it’s not art.

ENGINEERing is real when Alan Turing Machines actually compute bits accurately, it does not do digital computations just by talking about binary 1s and 0s like I do.

Jeff has said in many robust ways to his students: when we teach theory so abstractly, only the most interested and advanced students can understand it, this is inequity…

Let me explain: Whoever said art was abstract, has never taken a course on theory of computation … I feel the need for psychological services just by looking at this turing machine represented in this way!

machine states are annotated in yellow with bidirectional transitions of 0s or 1s denoted w lines and arrows.

you know how you can get a longer silence than you would ever want? when a professor asks "do you have any questions" again the answer is in the eye brows, sir madam… I appreciate the generosity of my professor to ask us, but where and which question do I begin with? This diagram feels more like art that I can’t comprehend, than science…

for all my friends who are trying to understand the concepts being delivered to you, just remember 1 thing. Professional major league baseball players whose average annual salary is $4.4 M dollars, get to be a professional by hitting the baseball 3 times in every 10 throws. so give yourself a chance by plan act and reflecting each class and module you complete, and move those eyebrows with conviction that you can learn anything you want to. Whether that be art or science, you are genius.

you can tell by how genius someone is by what they laugh at, so if you didn’t laugh at anything here, check yoself before you wreck yoself, boiiiiii

00:00 Catchup

00:02 horizons of focus model and organization structure

00:08 scholarship prep and statement of purpose / create framework capture small milestone journal application / finding people who are close friends and colleagues who are successful and having them share the lessons / every dollar you spend have that be a dollar you earned back / invested in the book, read it deeply implement the plan /

00:15 horizons of focus: 1 scholarship exist on bottom tier / vision value and purpose / student makes the school the school doesn’t make the student / what do you want to do / scholarship habit / find mechanisms to fill the gaps of the institution to empower yourself to navigate more effectively also craft vision btw.

00:20 you can make $ be introspective and get credit for it / defining the institution to craft our own vision / UCDavis has a ton of valuable scholarships / leverage the value of the institution the student makes the school / ritual time to set aside the purpose / finding spaces and mechanisms to pull levers that exist at that school / flow of money show up physically

00:27 earning the right to study

00:31 maximize ROInvestment from college, minimize the cost, defining the value, think critically, i think it’s stupid inequities in our system that lead to disparte outcomes, students mind

46:00 “was it the institution, who boo’d the idea of going into education. CC, state, UC, private schools. Donohue act in 1960s the law that implement california master plan, the mechanism by which california puts into code, higher ed are stratified. my CC my tenure requirements i do 100% teaching i don’t have to be publishing when my colleagues come into my classrooms they are looking for effective teachers. there is a very real focus on teaching, it could be a detractor - the next step up is primarily undergraduate institutions PUI aka CSU grant bachelors and masters degree 80% teaching 20% research. in greater bay area it’s more like 50% 50% - think about 1 blog post, now generate theory no body has seen before going to conferences getting grants

classic stories will write random people in the field - anonymous who have likely read your papers - out of your control as somebody going into that position you have to be writing people a lot this model this is based on the income of the university in order to stay in that job you need to get the feedback from people getting to know you Uc’s research is 80% 20% private institutions really skew this private institution have huge endowments. SJ mercury the largest land owner of bay area the amount of land they have just by themselves the river of VC and small money is stupid - stanford will poach the best academics in the world and then they will guarntee those people who don’t teach these classes -if you are at UCB - then you have

53:00 ACADEMIC ARMS RACE 0 teaching load in order to get the best talent systemic structures that make it in the financial interest of your faculty to incentivize educational experiences, and center or focus on the research bend bc there’s so much money involved in that - private industries - when students get out of their education and ready for that professional thinking a whole pathway and it’s really really difficult to get tenure in these institutions there are people who get tenure at 42y.o and it’s young. now you risen to the pinnacle of this thing it’s not my freaking problem - high ed was not founded for social justice move this was founded for rich white land owners in 1700s you can not get into a sematary school unless you white and a man. 1930s land grant build education then 1940 GI bill lets subsidize training for these folks so they can go back into 1950-1970 we as a society started to accept structures of Higher education who were never able to attend previously, while that’s happening there are social inequalities that sit behind that, who are the gate keepers in our ed system that really control that system run - policy makers govern the amount the founding - personnel is policy the actual decisions a fauclty member as a daily basis a lot of the chlalneges there’s a misalignment. a conscious dissonance between advertisement - why should you go to UCB vs Foothill College. get paid more

59:00 they are invested in your education, incentives I do not blame, human empathy - they are doing what’s right for them - i couldn’t make that decision for myself i can see being conscious of that injustice unhealthy for me and the type of life i wanted to create my family turn my mind off i would have to propagate it i would have to do in my own classes what i so detested i saw I enroll in the system get chewed up i refuse to play that game, not for the 1 %. it’s doing exactly what it’s designed to do, empowering subset of people.

1:01:00 it would be a lot more honest if we said, UCB, we can’t design the system KQED forum karl weinman nobel laureate in physics https://www.kqed.org/forum/2010101860027/nobel-laureate-carl-wieman-wants-to-to-end-the-college-lecture

In university, we are conditioned to let go of many things we hold so close & dear to our heart. We often learn languages and subjects our family and friends know very little about. We have to spend hours on end learning these subjects, all while learning how to learn in ways we were never required to before. Remember your values and who you are. You make the school, the school does not make you.

Lyrics: I am a poor wayfaring stranger I'm traveling through this world of woe Yet there's no sickness, toil nor danger In that bright land to which I go  I'm going there to see my father I'm going there, no more to roam I'm only going over Jordan I'm only going over home  I know dark clouds will gather round me I know my way is rough and steep But golden fields lie just before me Where God's redeemed shall ever sleep  I'm going home to see my mother And all my loved ones who've gone on I'm only going over Jordan I'm only going over home  Repeat verse one and chorus Song I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger (from "1917")

  1. @ 3-7 min Steve what it means to get a PhD and navigate opportunities that exist institutions
  2. @8-15 min Jeff which PhD program you’re gonna go to - the going gets tough when leave w nothing in Masters - Science of decision making Heath brother’s book Decisive - think about this reading as collecting information so you can make a better decision. 4 month of thinking. income streams PhD program so I get placed in my desired job right out of program. may not disclose our side hustle to our institution - implicit in that. horizons of focus in what I want out of my education. Global 1s major ticket evidence. upward management - the things you want institution is blind to all that. thought deeply follow exactly what I have to say.
  3. @19 Stephen King book On Writing - story of the Pin - submitting small articles on the wall collecting rejection letters
  4. @21 Deliberate practice
  5. @24 min Conquering College! skateboarding vs how of studying - principles there relate practices / ignition, part of your brain actively asking how to manage time - that practice solves my problem let me solve my problem you don’t have to fail to benefit my failure. how many students have the w
  6. @30 min takeaways for Steve
  7. @31 min really high quality production of video all pro researchers are pro writers(readers and thinkers) for people who are gonna be thought leaders. writing systems we are gonna develop consistently and processing and collecting info those same systems are directly transferable to PhD basically partitioning cognitive load technical to writing not only in PhD process. all of that stuff depends on systems of creation the more opportunity you’ll have to fail “people on fringes
  8. @42min excited (ignited maintain discipline) maintain that
  9. @46 min society is not structured in a way to value this - paradigm of Newport how he changed students lives, he’s selling a concept of hyperproductivity for personal economic gain, not talking about system transformation racism if you have a hierarchical system and you want to be at the pinnacle of that system under that system inequities of our entire society are encapsulated in that system we don’t actually value teaching, it’s way less easy to measure the output of a teacher than the measure the output of individual if you can produce goods that have, that relationships isn ot based on exchange of goods. stronger our minds are see right through it. ppl w power how do i maintain this, i have to remember to focus that value for myself and advocate that for my professional life
  10. @51 min academia they train jerks - their inferior
  11. @53 min professors are doing the most rational things
  12. @56 youtube boots to books
  13. @108 no prof on earth knew google’s page rank algorithm eigenvalue NSF GRFS
  14. @109 students forget how much agency they have, how do you apply the knowledge in practice in your particular field, how to apply that stuff as a plant, they are providing some foundational knowledge - systematically speaking challenge other professors believe in yourself - what do we pay for in our society - do we pay for A’s in calc classes - stuff that gets celebrated people who leverage old ideas in new ways so much of the challenge of education for students to figure out new and creative ways to apply and combined old knowledge to solve new problems - their job is not let me synthesize my ideas - how to apply something to a completely new context - if I was to speak to a student - start to track your questions treating your questions as important - challenge authority - you make your own education

We're seemingly losing faith in each other, and that is very dangerous for so many reasons that do not fit in this description. In education, nearly 50% of teachers leave the profession after 5 years, because when a child does poorly on the exam, the assumption is that the teacher is at fault: not the out-dated curriculum, lack of resources, or the fact that they have to be responsible for 100+ students per term. Suspend your assumptions about others, and seek authentic connections with others for yourself, and for everyone else.

"Contrary to the impression that you might get from the news, the curves show that humanity has been getting better, that we are living longer, we are fighting fewer wars, and fewer people are being killed in the wars. Our rate of homicide is down. Violence against women is down. More children are going to school, girls included. More of the world is literate. We have more leisure time than our ancestors did. Famines are becoming rarer, so virtually anything that you could measure that you'd want to call human well-being has improved over the last 2 centuries, but also over the last couple of decades" - Steve Pinker's book Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress, where he tackles assumptions head-on - of our fears that the world is getting less safe, less predictable, less hospitable...

"The checklists provided two main benefits, Pronovost observed. First, they helped with memory recall, especially with mundane matters that are easily overlooked in patients undergoing more drastic events. (When you’re worrying about what treatment to give a woman who won’t stop seizing, it’s hard to remember to make sure that the head of her bed is in the right position.) A second effect was to make explicit the minimum, expected steps in complex processes."

In a knowledge economy, the trajectory of your career depends a lot on the quality of your thinking. Instead of always trying to think of something brilliant on the spot, you can collect the best stories, images, observations, anecdotes, and metaphors in one central place, priming your imagination and revealing connections between ideas.

  1. Consistently move your projects and goals to completion
  2. Establish a creative process that helps you reliably produce your best work
  3. Transform your personal knowledge into income and opportunities
  4. Enhance your thinking and uncover unexpected patterns and connections between ideas
  5. Reduce stress, Fear of Missing Out, and “information overload”
  6. Develop valuable expertise and credibility for a new job, career, or business
  7. Unlock the full value of the wealth of learning resources all around you

Building A Second Brain is a methodology for saving and systematically reminding us of the ideas, inspirations, insights, and connections we’ve gained through our experience. It expands our memory and our intellect using the modern tools of technology and networks.

This methodology is not only for preserving those ideas, but turning them into reality. It provides a clear, actionable path to creating a “second brain” – an external, centralized, digital repository for the things you learn and the resources from which they come.

You’ll have an ongoing record of personal discoveries, lessons learned, and actionable insights for any situation.

Part I: Remember keep it in a single, centralized place

A) Think like a curator

unless we make conscious, strategic decisions about what we consume, we’ll always be at the mercy of what others want us to see.

B) Organize your content by project

Instead of organizing each one of the information management tools you use in a completely different way, use your projects as universal categories across all of them.

C) Keep only what resonates

By training ourselves to notice when something resonates with us at a deeper level, we improve not only our ability to see opportunities, but also our understanding of ourselves and how we work.

Part II: Connect

A) Design notes for your future self

By constantly saving packets of knowledge in a format that our future self can easily consume, we follow a “pay it forward” strategy that we get to benefit from in the future!

B) Summarize progressively, at different levels of detail

read the note in different ways for different purposes: in depth if you want to glean every detail, or at a high level if you just need the main takeaway.

C) Organize opportunistically, a little bit at a time

add value to a note every time you touch it - ensure that the most frequently used (and thus most valuable) notes surface organically

Part III: Create

All of this capturing, summarizing, connecting, and organizing has one ultimate purpose: creating tangible results in the real world

A) Don’t just consume information passively – put it to use

B) Create smaller, reusable units of work

C) Share your work with the world

Ending - Because you know how to capture and make use of anything, every experience you have becomes an opportunity to learn and to grow. Instead of endlessly optimizing yourself, trying to become a productivity machine that never deviates from the plan, it has you optimize an external system that is more reliable than you will ever be. This frees you to imagine, to wonder, to wander toward whatever makes you come alive here and now in the moment.

A) in bed,

B) on my commute (ultimate fail because the audio did not pair to the microphone but rather than car speaker),

C) and walking on the 7th street plaza on my way to class.

In academia, it may feel like we're running an individual race but really, we are running a race together, and not one person should be left behind... because our mission is to: sustain and enhance a democratic society to empower students to achieve their goals as members of the workforce as global citizens.

History isn't just something that happens, it's something each of us helps to make... a responsibility that all of us need to take seriously

Science Extravaganza workshop and McNair's lecture on drafting a literature review... all could have been improved if we think of learning as kindling and filling... Let's utilize the voices, also known as the filled vessels (students and instructors) we have in our class, to break the norms of measuring success and learning.
