In this podcast, several stories from the landscape are shared as developed for the course Design in Land and Water Management 1 at Wageningen University. In the podcast episodes, the students bring you to their case study area and share interesting findings, fun facts and stories from their landscape. More information about the cases can be found in the BIL.MAG - a magazine developed together with the students. In most of the cases, students also developed a bike tour using the Peek app. The content is developed by the students, and WU is not responsible for its content in any way.

The area for this case study will be a floodplain of the Nether-Rhine. To be exact the floodplain near Wageningen. The area will be limited to the part between the Pabsterdam and the Veerdam. This area is relevant for this case study because the flow of the stream that will be investigated is only present in between these dams. The stream is stream that originates from the Nether-Rhine and travels through the floodplain. These two dams in combination with the Grebbedijk form a perfect boundary for the area because in most cases water does not pass beyond those dams/dikes. The most important structure in the floodplain is the Weir at the harbour. This structure is relevant due to all the discussions that are going on about this weir. The proponents of a wetter floodplain would like to see this weir closed. The proponents consist of: the province Gelderland, the organisation Mooi Wageningen and state forest management. The opponent of a wetter floodplain would like to keep the situation as it is right now. The opponent of this idea is the waterboard vallei and veluwe. During the case study your you will be taken to all relevant points and you will learn more about the situation in the floodplains of Wageningen.

This research aims to determine the impact of human activity on the mobile and fixed dune area at Scheveningen beach and If human influence poses threats to the environment what impact does it have on coastal protection? This will provide information concerning coastal management protection. Mobile dunes are large areas of bare, moving sand but have a greater cover of marram grass. Fixed dunes consist of almost complete vegetation cover with a high prevalence of plants. A PEEK bike tour will be carried out at the chosen locations, whereby relevant questions will arise. To complete the research I will be measuring the impacts using four different techniques. I will measure pH levels from the shoreline. If the readings show a proliferation in acidity, this may indicate that the waves transfer eroded material, which is often associated with the deposition of waste in the sea (human activity). The second method is formulating an environmental survey. The environmental survey will depict how dense and sparse populations (residents and tourists) have a contrasting effect on the land. Additionally, I will be in contact with managers and officials to perform interviews. In areas of mobile and fixed dunes, I aim to identify whether there is a loss of vegetation due to human trespassing. This will be achieved through quadrat readings.
