Diego Maradona was an iconic, enigmatic and tragic figure all of which is captured in the documentary, "Diego Maradona."

Academy Award winning director Asif Kapadia tells Pro Soccer USA's Glenn Crooks that he discovered 500 hours of archived footage which provides the essence of the man best known for his slalom through England in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup and the "Hand of God" goal in the same match.

“I can tell you that having done so much research on Diego Maradona I’ve seen him do it three or four times," Kapadia said. Half the time he gets away with it, half the time he gets caught.”

Kapadia explains that his film spends considerable time on the incredible seven years Maradona played for Napoli.

“The most expensive player in the world goes to one of the poorest cities in Europe and takes a team that’s never won anything before, was about to be relegated and within three years wins a championship. That is the less well known part of his story.”

New York City FC first team member Eric Miller is also on the Executive Board of the Major League Soccer Players Association. He sat down with Pro Soccer USA's Glenn Crooks and described some of the priorities for the players with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement set to expire before the start of the 2020 season.

Miller makes it clear that the players will push for a more flexible salary structure and part of that consideration should be the elimination of both TAM and GAM.

“I think that three-letter acronyms are not going to help the league grow any more. It’s time to let teams decide how they’re going to spend their money.”

In the past, the MLSPA has been accused of easily giving in to the demands of the league in negotiations. Miller said that will not be the case this time.

“it’s the most prepared we’ve ever been, it’s the most organized we’ve ever been and the most unified we’ve ever been as a group. We are prepared for a work stoppage if necessary and that is our biggest bargaining chip.”

The most important result in Dome Torrent’s brief tenure as head coach of the New York City Football Club came on April 24 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

It was week eight of Major League Soccer and the boys in blue had yet to record a victory and Torrent’s job security was in question.

City won that match in convincing style, 2-0 – part of what is currently an 11-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Audi Field will be the venue for New York City’s Round of 16 match in the 106-year old U.S. Open Cup – the Pigeons recording their first win in the competition last week against North Carolina FC.

Because of injuries and international call-ups, Anton Tinnerholm, normally an outside back, played at center back for the first time since he was 15 years old in that match.

The Kicking + Screening Film Festival enters its 11th year with a group of independent soccer films unveiled June 4-7 at the Scandinavian House in New York City. Pro Soccer USA’s Glenn Crooks sat down with festival co-founder, Greg Lalas who gives a capsule on all the feature films.

Soccertown USA is a film that takes a close look at Kearny, NJ – the cradle of American soccer that has produced Tony Meola, John Harkes and Tab Ramos – who all grew up just a mile from each other before representing the USA together in the World Cup. South Orange, NJ resident Tom McCabe is one of the producers of Soccertown USA and he talks to Glenn about all the soccer history that Kearny has to offer – dating back to the late 1800’s.

“Kearny is a mysterious even mystical soccer place. There’s field all over town, there’s dust bowls. When you study American soccer you have to look at this as the cradle of American soccer, one of these really, really important places to our game in this country.” – Tom McCable, Soccertown USA.
