So much of life is completely outside of our control—the people we run into, unfortunate circumstances, our genetics, our ethnicity, and more.
Yet many of those uncontrollable things are what cause so much stress, frustration, and anxiety in life. When they seem to turn against us (as they sometimes do), it can drain our energy and block our happiness.

Psychological blocks – they are invisible, until they aren’t.
Instead, they are smacking you in the face and you do what ever you can to avoid facing them – deflection, redirection,
avoidance, concentrating on something else so you don’t have to pay attention to the real issue.
We all do it on some level and for those of us fighting obesity, it only wastes precious time when we could be fighting our
way to a healthier life.

Do you know that your mindset can make the difference between success and failure in your
journey to good health?
Everything begins with the mind… and the body will follow.
Factors such as trauma and grief can be addressed and used to help you in your journey.
You just need the right tools.

I want to address the current day-to-day problems obese people face. Lack of facilities, amenities and weight bearing equipment means that this growing population is subjected to a poorer quality of life and ostracized from a society built for ‘normal weight’ people.

Many people assume that obese people are always happy as they get to eat what they want but that is not really true. If you are an obese person yourself, you must know what I am saying and if you are not, you have no clue about it.

Here’s a look at just some of the most common everyday struggles for people living with obesity.

Life can be tough for all of us sometimes and for some of us. It can seem like life only exists to punch you in the face and kick you when you are down. If that happens enough, it can be very easy to slide into a victim mentality. People who struggle with obesity and the prejudices and challenges that ensue; have to guard against this happening. Cari, Sean, and Tom help identify what a victim mentality can look like and how to guard against it and help others as well. Join the revolution now

One of the most difficult things to overcome in any journey where somebody is trying to better themselves, is to be held accountable. It can make you feel exposed when you allow somebody to hold you accountable. On top of that, many do not know how to hold others or even themselves accountable without shaming or coming across as full of condemnation. So how do we do this the right way? Join us on this week's podcast as Tom and Sean tackle the issue of accountability without shame or condemnation. Find out how to help each other and ourselves the right and healthy way.

Nobody likes the feeling of being dismissed. No other group has been dismissed and misunderstood more than those who struggle with obesity. We deserve to be respected by the healthcare community. We deserve to be accommodated and treated like we matter; especially when the effort is being made and the cooperation seems to be nonexistent. Join us this week as we explore the healthcare community and how as a whole they continue to drop the ball when it comes to treating obesity and the health issues that surround it. Join us as we explore the misunderstandings and false assumptions made by society and those that are supposed to be under a hippocratic oath to give us the care and respect we deserve. This week Sean shares a personal story where needs were not met and inadequacy and poor preparation led to another setback. Be your own advocate. Speak up on this week's Obesity Revolution Podcast.

Have you ever wondered why society is so prejudiced towards people who struggle with obesity? It starts in the media. From the evening news, to sitcoms, to movies; fattertainment has been encouraged and made fun of to the point of making those who struggle seem disgusting or unworthy of love and respect. It is gross and unfair. So how do we tackle the Hollywood World of, "Fattertainment?" Sean and Tom tackle this question on this week's broadcast. Be the difference and join us in this battle.

This might shock you but, people who struggle with obesity and its effects are not primarily looking for you to pity them. A little sympathy is appreciated but even more so, we desire to be treated with the same respect we all deserve. We are not here to entertain you or make you feel better about yourselves. If that is how you see somebody who struggles with obesity, then you have some lessons to learn. Join Sean and Tom as they continue on the journey of bringing fact to fat and remember; we are human beings and we deserve your kindness and respect.

Many chronic conditions that cause pain are more common in people who are overweight or obese, such as arthritis, depression, fibromyalgia, hypertension, asthma, type 2 diabetes, and back pain. Because of this, the assumption is that being obese increases the likelihood of having multiple medical problems, and many of these conditions may cause pain.

The American Medical Association has officially declared obesity a disease, rather than a condition, and obesity and pain often go hand in hand, even if the obese person is otherwise healthy.

Everything we experience makes up our story – times and triumph and strife over years create who we are and how we see ourselves.
This is my story
I was verbally abused throughout most of my childhood by my stepfather
I was sexually abused by a neighbor
My dad died when I was six
I didn’t know how to cope with all this, so I figured it out.

The SpaceX rocket took years to create, every possible contingency was considered, and when it was ready, they sent it all the way into space.

The fire cracker is temporary, short term – it makes some noise, but for the most part it’s …forgettable

A ROCKET is long term, well thought out, and its endurance is the only noise it needs.

A rocket doesn’t have to tell you how strong it is, or show you how loud it is.

Given the choice, I would hope that you would not choose to be a bottle rocket.

Remember, we don’t just want to lose this unhealthy weight –

we want to keep it off, FOREVER.

I don't want to lose my weight FAST I want to lose it, FOREVER!

You are more than enough

Society shapes us to feel that we must fit perfectly into cookie cutter molds. We must be beautiful, we must be intelligent, and we must be successful. We define these goals very one dimensionally – we ignore the fact that beauty comes in many different forms and facets, and that intelligence is different in every single person. These little pockets we create of how we “should” be are too severe. They leave no space for mystery, and no room for uncertainty. They ruin the chances of the miraculous unexpected, and put up sharp walls that block us off from personal growth.

You might not be great right now, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t capable of being successful in the future.
You need to visualize yourself. You need to decided where you want to be in 10 years. You need to set a plan and imagine where you want to be in the future. See who you want to be and realize where you are right now doesn’t need to be where you’ll be forever. One day you will be successful, but only if you believe it. You might be surrounded by a whole lot of nothing right now, but if you don’t give up and you keep pushing forward one day you will find that success, but if you quit you will never be there.

It's up to you to live in the problem or live in the solution!

Over the last 20 years, Matt Entizne’s battle with morbid obesity took a turn for the worse, when in December 2015, he had a brain injury caused by a condition related to obesity, called Hypoxia, which is associated with the lack of oxygen to the brain leading to injury or death. This occurred from not wearing a Cpap device at night while being on a heavy regular dose of prescription narcotics.

Following this incident, he was initially almost blind for an entire week, and it took almost a year to see without a visual deficit. upon entering 2016, Matt became bed bound and over a period of 4 1/2 years, he eventually ended up on a Cpap/Bipap machine 24 hours a day.

Fast forward, Matt’s official weight loss journey began August 4th, 2020 at over 700 pounds, shortly before his 40th birthday. On his back, barely able to breathe without assistance from a machine, he made a life and death choice to completely change his entire life around in regards to his health and well being. Then, at the recommendation of a loving and caring friend, he began to utilize a band retention workout program that he could start to do at his own pace. With the hope of a better future, support from various allies, friends & family, and an adequate dietary and nutritional plan, he will conquer obesity and hopefully inspire others, who like himself, have faced or face the battle of obesity themselves.

How’s your attitude!

Gratitude and attitude determines you altitude

The reality is that you determine your attitude. Your attitude is one of the few things in life over which you have total control.

Attitude is the way you look at life. It is the way you choose to see and respond to events, situations, people, and yourself. Your attitude is not something that happens to you. You choose your attitude.

Mike Young knows first hand getting knocked down and getting back up. He went from liquid millionaire to $200.000 in debt in less than 6 months.

And now...

Mike Young is the founder of The Makeover Master, host of the top rated “Made Over Podcast”, author of "Made Over: How To Create A Powerful Brand That Will Transform Your Business & Save Your Life", and a seasoned entrepreneur.

Mike is the creator of “The Mentorship Makeover - Business Growth System” and the "A$AP Strategy Session", as part of what he considers his life’s work and duty to help others avoid the hellish 8.5 years of debt, pain and growing pains (and $200,000+) he spent buying every book and course he could afford, traveling to every seminar and event imaginable trying to get his business to work.

He works with those who have a business but it’s “not really working” and they can’t seem to discover the real reasons why.

Mike’s system and methodologies fix a giant problem that many business owners face in today’s world of generic advice and information overload, a problem that’s keeping them from running a successful business, costing them money, time, energy and focus.

The goal is to keep you moving forward, POSITIVELY forward. Not to watch you wallow in self-doubt and not to watch and witness you verbally abuse yourself.
Yes, we are all going to have bad days, but misery loves company and none of us can afford to take a trip on the miserable train as a passenger or as the conductor.
It’s important for you to always remember that a bad moment doesn’t need to become a bad day. Keep your experiences in perspective, so you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Keeping control of your eating habits during the holidays can be grueling!
Staying on track when you’re steeped in tradition, family gatherings, and the generous spirit of the holidays can be almost too much to handle.
But we can do it – we really can. All we gotta do is build a plan and then stick to it.
The plan we build doesn’t have to be super strict and inflexible – we just need to put some guidelines into place so at the end, we aren’t feeling remorse for derailing our journey.

This article dissects obesity and suggest a way to beat it and prevent it.
A group of doctors in Canada got together to discuss obesity and they went into this discussion with the common knowledge that public prejudices and public perception toward an obese individual and an obese community obstructs treatment options and medication hinders body positivity of a patient. Basically, the stigma of obesity affects us and how we consider treatment – being shamed for year will take a toll on your mind. People are embarrassed by it, and they know they are being judged by every stranger who can see them.

Last year, I had the privilege of meeting a really great guy named Brad - Brad Brewer.
He had been struggling with his weight and by the time we connected, Brad was in the hospital with an infection that was really kicking his butt.
For 45 days, he fought along side the medical team at the hospital in Festus.
When he got to the hospital, he weighed over 700 pounds, and when he was discharged, he lost so much water weight, he was down to 550 pounds!
It was a very proud day for everyone when he was finally discharged.
The staff was so touched and inspired by Brad that they got him a pair of boxing gloves.
Everyone wrote words of encouragement and love on the gloves and they sent the gloves home with him.
I want to tell you some more about Brad because he in an amazing inspiration to me:
Brad is an accomplished and gifted writer
He holds a doctorate and actually wrote the class syllabus at University of Mississippi!
He’s a genius, he’s encouraging – he’s always generous with a smile and quick to make you feel comfortable.
This last time he got sick, he didn’t go to Festus, he went to a different one.
Because he’s obese and because he doesn’t have health insurance, it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to take him seriously.
Nobody could see the person behind the weight – they would not look past his obesity to see Doctor Brad Brewer.
He was finally able to get a healthcare advocate, and after that it was a bunch of ‘hurry up and wait’ while some “POWER” decided if he was worth the effort or not.
They booted him out of the hospital as soon as they could.
I can’t give you the name of the hospital, for liability reasons, but we all know that type of treatment because most of us have dealt with it on some level.
(pregnant pause)
2 days ago, my friend, my amazing brother Brad, passed away.
We are all devastated. . . .
He was in his home, he woke up with the chills because he had been battling a staph infection. He told his girlfriend that he was having a tough time catching his breath.
And in a flash he was gone.
Brad died while waiting on paperwork and red tape to determine if he should be granted health insurance due to his condition.
Its sickening, its dismissive and it’s cruel to treat people like they are less than human!
There’s not a person out there that hasn’t been damaged at some point in their lives and they now have self-destructive tendencies –
HELLO! --- Smoking, alcohol, drugs, gambling, porn – all of which have organizations dedicated to breaking those cycles and improving lives through positive and permanent change.
But the obese community? Please! We get dismissed, we get called names and looked at like we are nothing but the scum of the earth!
Obesity is the last socially acceptable prejudice!
And I am so SICK of these barriers and discriminate attituded because we are obese! We are NOT caricatures of your prejudicial ideals – We are PEOPLE for crying out loud!

Doctors and Healthy and Fitness industry:
Why did Brad sit in his wheelchair and die while you all took your sweet time and debated his worth?
He wanted to continue to fight for his life!
He sought support and resources and was effectively slapped away.

Obese community:
Take yourself seriously, YOUR LIFE IS AT STAKE
Drop the excuses, quit crying about it! There is no time and no room for a pity party.
Quit focusing on the ‘why’ you got here and instead focus on the HOW you’re going to get out of it!
Stop looking backward, so you can look forward!
Start saying to yourself and to the world – I am here, I am human and I matter!
Then start acting like it!

It’s an unfortunate reality that sometimes, during our journey, the scale won’t move, despite our best efforts.
Or even worse, the scale moves in the wrong direction!
We get discouraged and want to just give up – but I’m here to tell you that we can’t give up.
We are not just changing our bodies, we are also changing our minds, learning endurance and learning how to be patient with ourselves – possibly for the very first time.
I discovered I had to change how I looked at this disappointment when I was in that valley of no results.
I have been gaining and losing the same 30 pounds for a year and I was beating myself up over it.
But then I began to think of all the non scale victories I have made:
I gave up fast food and soda 7 years ago – THAT was a healthy choice for myself overall
I workout on a consistent basis – that is making me strong, building endurance and strengthening my heart
Since my journey began, I have lost 60 inches – my wife can hug me now, and her hands touch behind my back!
Look, it didn’t take a few weeks or even a few months to put this weight on, and its going to take a lot longer than that to get it off.
We have to be realistic in our expectations, and we also have to be in this for the long haul.
The man or woman who looks in the face of no results the longest becomes king or queen because they continue to stick it out and stay dedicated.
They are looking at the long term goal
Remember: Weight loss is a journey, NOT an event. It is a continued way of living that can’t stop
And going through these valleys makes us stronger by changing our minds and teaching ourselves patience. Celebrate the victories, ESPECIALLY the non scale ones.
You are working hard, you are in it for the long haul and you will face the setbacks with determination and dedication.

The Weight Loss Trap – Time Magazine Article

Both are powerful pieces that hit you right between the eyes.
I’m glad others, especially literary influencers and respected magazines like Time are taking a good hard, HONEST look into the obesity crisis that has our country in a strong hold right now.
Time hasn’t healed us, its made the situation worse – the two biggest factors being:
BAD FOOD made by companies who care more about the bottom dollar than the health and well-being of their customers - why do you think there are so many aliases for sugar and chemical sweeteners? High Fructose Corn Syrup is cheaper than sugar, but it’s a chemical and our bodies don’t know what it is, so our brain stores it as fat because it doesn’t know what to do with it. It seems like the food industry is wanting to kill its customers kinda like people say the tobacco industry is.
Child abuse and neglect – and we, as a society have finally figured out the correlation between childhood trauma and health problems like obesity. Kids who are abused don’t have an outlet, they don’t know where to turn so they turn inward and then they turn on themselves . . some without even realizing it. Kids need to be and to feel safe ALWAYS. They deserve to have that basic human need met. They need validation, direction and a good moral example so they can learn how to respect themselves and everyone else.

Obesity is no joke, it’s serious business and we all deserve to invest in ourselves. We all need to learn as much as we can about ourselves, our bodies, what makes us tick – what makes us gain weight. We only have this one body, this one life and it’s our to enjoy, it’s ours to enrich others, its ours to make a positive impact on the world, and we can’t really do that if we are stuck in a house somewhere because we can’t get out of our chair.

Ingredients of success: you will never have success until you do what is necessary to have it. Wanting and wishing will only get you so far.
Without effort, it’s just dreaming and nothing more.
Long term success required short term pain/discomfort/inconvenience. Get ready to get comfortable with being uncomfortable

Mental health/mind set – I dismissed it for decades
Nutrition – I ignored it
Physical movement – we aren’t trees, we were built to MOVE, so move!
Consider physical restrictions - for me, it’s lymphedema

Through my journey, through my failed attempts, through the frustration of having to start and stop again about a thousand times, I figured something out:

I figured out that I had to do ALL 4 of these, neglecting just ONE of these requirements sabotaged my efforts and prevented me from attaining REAL success – long term success… short term success doesn’t last, and its not worth your effort or frustration.

Learning that was huge and I am sharing it with you because I don’t want to see you have to struggle like I did.

Real effort, and not taking short cuts will allow you and allows me to enjoy my successes and also allows me to respect myself, despite my short comings and I actually root for myself and am my own cheering squad.

I believe in me and I believe in you too.

You have some plans to make, you have some decisions to make – you CAN have success, you can get to a better, healthier, safer place in your life.

Its not for the weak, it takes a LOT of frustration to fight your way out of this, but I am worth it. You are worth it.

Victories can be counted up in small increments – just because they are small doesn’t make them any less valuable, and you can count them as you go. And they don’t have just be based on the number on the scale.

Victories can be anything that you can do now that you couldn’t do before:
Brushing your teeth without getting winded
Trimming your toenails without working up a sweat
Not having to use the seat belt extender

It’s not a bad thing to ask yourself what your ingredients are, it’s ok to call yourself out and get real with yourself – you may get embarrassed, when you really take a good look and realize you were turning a blind eye to some crucial necessities, but that’s ok too.

We assess and we adjust – that’s how we keep moving forward, positively and productively.

Think about it:
Due to a specific set of circumstances, we are all being limited in our activities.
Out of necessity, we are in social distance and quarantine mindset.
We have been isolating, out of necessity.
We have been limiting everything we do and everywhere we go, out of necessity.
Our worlds have gotten a LOT smaller – out of necessity.

A person who is obese, due to a specific set of circumstances (childhood abuse, trauma, emotional torture) is limited in their activities.
We limit everything we do and everywhere we go, out of necessity.
Our worlds are a lot smaller than they should be, out of necessity.
We are isolated, out of necessity.
We are constantly in a social distancing mindset, because not many people want to get close to us.
And by the way, have you notice what’s happening to folks right now, after being in isolation for a month?
They’re impatient They’re grumpy They’re depressed They’re frustrated
They’re in despair They’re full of worry They’re going stir crazy!

I thought a lot about it and I think I have it figured out –

From a very young age, I was taught that when things weren’t going well, food would make me feel better. “Eat Seaney, eat” (my sweet mother)

I didn’t know and didn’t think about if this way of dealing with life, stress, disappointment was the RIGHT way to deal with it.

Life was challenging for me –I told you before how I lost my dad when I was a very young age, I was the youngest (by a lot) of 5 kids and when my dad died, everyone dealt with the loss in their own way…

I think that was the beginning.

There was no such thing as “grief counseling” back then.. . . . You just pushed on. That’s how you handled things.

I was very young and I didn’t even realize how deeply we were affected.

For years, I distracted myself with sports, music, running around with my friends… I piled things on, maybe to hide, or to avoid what I was feeling.

I've asked myself how the heck did i get here, because it was never my goal to be 687lbs!!!

Obesity impacts one in three Americans. It is estimated that more than 93 million Americans are affected by obesity, with that number predicted to rise to 120 million in the next five years. Within this population, it is estimated that 8-10 million Americans are affected by severe obesity – a disease characterized by an individual being 100 pounds or more over their ideal body weight.

As any individual affected by obesity knows, obesity is a complex chronic disease. It is not simply a condition caused by overeating.

Individuals affected often experience a wide variety of other obesity-related conditions including diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea and cancer, which are serious medical risks.

Adding to the challenge, individuals affected are often denied access to needed medical treatment (medical weight management and/or bariatric surgery) as some payors (insurance companies, etc.) and employers do not recognize obesity as a disease.

The OAC encourages individuals affected by obesity to educate themselves about obesity, its complications and treatments. We believe that educated individuals are best able to make decisions about their healthcare, and therefore are able to be healthier and happier.

The Morbidly Obese are ignored, not considered by society in general.
It’s like society is blaming and shaming us for our physicality, without even TRYING to understand why, or help us out of this situation we are in.
We’ve got ‘awareness’ for everything, every circumstance, situation, ailment out there – with the exception of morbid obesity.
It feels like unless there’s some popular mega star standing there asking for folks to join the plight, we are left to ourselves.
The “Ignore it, and it isn’t happening” mentality.  That absolves them from accountability from everything to airline seats that are a mere 14 inches wide to watch bands that are too short to wear comfortably around the wrist.
