It has been a journey and we hope you enjoy this final episode. Paul and Calum go into the battle in great detail.
The Battle of Hastings[a] was fought on 14 October 1066 between the Norman-French army of William, the Duke of Normandy, and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, beginning the Norman conquest of England. It took place approximately 7 miles (11 kilometres) northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex, and was a decisive Norman victory.

Charles Christopher Hodgson (born 12 November 1980) is a retired English rugby union player, having previously been a player for Sale Sharks and Saracens. His position was fly-half and he is the leading Premiership points scorer of all time. Hodgson also played for England, until announcing his international retirement in 2012. Hodgson made 18 consecutive starts at fly half for England between 2004 and 2006.

Modern historians regard him as the first King of England and one of the greatest Anglo-Saxon kings. He never married and had no children. He was succeeded by his half-brother, Edmund

The Battle of Brunanburh was fought in 937 between Æthelstan, King of England, and an alliance of Olaf Guthfrithson, King of Dublin; Constantine II, King of Scotland, and Owain, King of Strathclyde. The battle is often cited as the point of origin for English nationalism: historians such as Michael Livingston argue that "the men who fought and died on that field forged a political map of the future that remains [in modernity], arguably making the Battle of Brunanburh one of the most significant battles in the long history not just of England, but of the whole of the British Isles."[1]

Welcome to Part 4 of 8 of the Birth of the English Nation History Series from Paul and Calum of Aspen Waite.
This week Calum and Paul take an in-depth look at who Paul describes as possibly the 2nd most important woman in English History.
Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians (c. 870 – 12 June 918) ruled Mercia in the English Midlands from 911 until her death. She was the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and his wife Ealhswith.
Æthelflæd was born around 870 at the height of the Viking invasions of England. By 878, most of England was under Danish Viking rule – East Anglia and Northumbria having been conquered, and Mercia partitioned between the English and the Vikings – but in that year Alfred won a crucial victory at the Battle of Edington. Soon afterwards the English-controlled western half of Mercia came under the rule of Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, who accepted Alfred's overlordship. Alfred adopted the title King of the English, claiming to rule all English people not living in areas under Viking control. In the mid-880s, Alfred sealed the strategic alliance between the surviving English kingdoms by marrying Æthelflæd to Æthelred.

And this week we have a special on King Alfred the Great!
Great to hear Paul and Calum discussing one of the most famous characters in English History - one who played a key roll in establishing 'England'.
Some info:
Alfred the Great (Old English: Ælfrēd,[b] Ælfrǣd,[c] 'Elf-counsel' or 'Wise-elf'; between 847 and 849 – 26 October 899) was King of Wessex from 871 to c. 886 and King of the Anglo-Saxons from c. 886 to 899. He was the youngest son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex. His father died when he was young and three of Alfred's brothers, Æthelbald, Æthelberht and Æthelred, reigned in turn before him.
After ascending the throne, Alfred spent several years fighting Viking invasions. He won a decisive victory in the Battle of Edington in 878 and made an agreement with the Vikings, creating what was known as the Danelaw in the North of England. Alfred also oversaw the conversion of Viking leader Guthrum to Christianity. He defended his kingdom against the Viking attempt at conquest, becoming the dominant ruler in England.[1] Details of his life are described in a work by 9th-century Welsh scholar and bishop Asser.

Is Boris making political decisions regarding Covid19 with a direct aim of not alienating the northern demographic of voters?
“Neo Marxist behaviour from a government that should be acting in a democratic way.” As Paul put it.
People and country are divided and we discuss in this episode points regarding furlough, unemployment, teachers, unions etc in their stance.
We discuss the local protests at London that happened recently with people trying to protect their rights by going outside and the reaction from Police.
Also the need to start back up with football for the mental health of the public, and real stories about hospitals and treatment to members of the public NOT relating to Covid19.

There is also the issue of accrued holiday from the scheme from an employers perspective.
2 months into lockdown now - what are consequences of furlough going on for another four months.

Paul Waite interviewing legendary trainer and jockey Jonjo O'Neill.
John Joseph "Jonjo" O'Neill (born 13 April 1952) is an Irish National Hunt racehorse trainer and former jockey. He is a native of Castletownroche, County Cork in Ireland. Based at the Jackdaws Castle training establishment in England. O'Neill twice won the British Champion Jockey title (1977-78 & 1979-80) and won the Cheltenham Gold Cup on the mare, Dawn Run who became the only horse to complete the double of winning the Champion Hurdle and the Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival. He won 900 races as a jockey.
At the 2009 Cheltenham Festival, Wichita Lineman, an O'Neill trained horse, won the William Hill Trophy. On 10 April 2010, Jonjo O'Neill trained Don't Push It to win the Grand National. In seven attempts as a jockey he had never completed the course but Don't Push It, ridden by the champion jockey Tony McCoy (whose best finishes in fourteen previous attempts had been third places) overtook Black Apalachi at the last fence and pulled clear on the run in to win by five lengths. In March 2012 he trained Synchronised to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Ben Eltham is on the road this week speaking to the lovely Andras and Norbert of Social Media guru company Esemdee.
Andras and Norbert set up a digital marketing agency but could not find a platform they were happy with when handling multiple accounts and that could service multi national clients as well as small business clients. So, they sourced and employed some extremely talented people to make one for them. In fact, the system worked so well and was so easy for their clients to use with great results that the idea for releasing Esemdee was born.

Here is some background info:
Steve Rodgers, singer songwriter, has just completed recording his much anticipated first album, due for release this year and produced by Ken Nelson (Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Paolo Nutini) mixed by Adrian Bushby (Foo Fighters, Muse). His songs reflect his passion for life’s depth, mystery and wonder, recorded with his band of like-minded musicians. Critics compare his music to a mix of Jack Johnson, Paolo Nutini and Cat Stevens.
At 14 he began to write his own songs on guitar and piano. He started a band with his friends at 17, ‘Lost Sons of Davros’. From the ‘Lost Sons’ came ‘Boa’ they created two great albums – their first single ‘Duvet’ was the title track to the Japanese multi award- winning animation series Manga ‘Lain – Serial Xperiments’. They toured the States, the UK and after much enjoyment, Steve decided to follow his own path.
He has ‘guested’ at Wembley for Bad Company, Aerosmith’s Joe Perry and the Robert Randolph Band. Tours have included support slots for Bad Company in the UK and Japan and his own headline dates in the UK and Canada. Steve has also supported The Deborah Bonham Band and Midge Ure on their respective tours in the UK and Europe. In 2014 he supported Bad Company again with Lynyrd Skynyrd for their coast to coast US tour and in September 2015 he joined Stackridge for a three month tour of the UK.

Dick Dale invented Surf Music in the 1950’s, he was given the title “King of the Surf Guitar” by his fellow surfers with whom he surfed with from Sun-up to Sun-down.
He met Leo Fender , the Guitar and Amplifier guru and Leo asked Dale to play his new creation, the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar.
The minute Dale picked up the guitar, Leo Fender broke into uncontrolled laughter and disbelief - - he was watching Dale play a right handed guitar upside down and backwards...Dale was playing a right handed guitar left handed, and changing the chords in his head and transposing the chords to his hands to create a sound never heard before.
