Marcelo Tolopilo
Marcelo Tolopilo, an experienced Bible teacher, conference speaker and author, is the founder and president of Walking In The Promises (www.witp.org). Born in Argentina to European immigrants, Marcelo’s family moved to the U.S. where he grew up in Southern CA. He received his education at Biola University (B.A.) and Talbot School of Theology (M.Div.). Marcelo has served in the pastorate as well as with two international missions agencies. In 1992, Marcelo’s passion for scripture led him to launch the Bible teaching ministry of Walking In The Promises. Since then he has traveled throughout the country speaking with passion and conviction to a variety of Christian audiences from the timeless truths of God’s word. Marcelo and his wife, Valorie, have four children and reside in Southern California.

We live in uncertain times. How should we navigate our lives in a day of insecurity? As Christians we need to remember that we have a sure word from the Lord. We serve a sovereign God. Every growing disciple learns best from observing a life lived well and that can only occur with time spent together for that very purpose. Time is to discipleship as fuel is to fire. Without the first, you won't have the second. But be aware, busyness can give us the illusion of time shared while actually robbing us of that very thing.
Mom & Dad, you are your children’s primary pastors. Pastors are shepherds of God’s flock, right? They take care of the sheep. The shepherd protects, provides, feeds, nurtures, heals, guides and trains. Doesn’t that sound remarkably like the job description of a parent? It is! You’ve been shepherding your children from the day they were born.The family is the context in which the vast majority of all this relating, blessing, leading, correcting, directing, instructing, and in essence discipleship is designed to take place.
Saving faith is most effectively nurtured, God's truth is most effectively passed on to our children, in the context of the home over time, where it is taught and consistently modeled by loving parents, and for that matter, godly grandparents. God's primary vehicle to impact your children is you, mom and dad, grandpa and grandma! The gospel and its attending truths are passed on best when they are couched in the warp and woof of daily life by the heads of households. There is simply no substitute for that!
The call to mentor our children is rooted in the content, the context and the consistency of discipleship. The content of discipleship is God's word which begs the question, 'Are we becoming men and women of the word and are we proactively speaking truth into the next generation?' We must start where we are and with humble dependence on the Holy Spirit make it our ambition to grow in the knowledge of God revealed in Scripture. Let's be purposeful and take the light God has given to us (the glory of His truth) and proactively pass on that torch to the next generation.
There is nothing that will transform parents more thoroughly, more radically than an informed growing love for God. And nothing will impact our children spiritually more, than for them to witness in their parents a dynamic passion for the one true God. He wants to transform us from the inside out in order to use us as a catalyst for lasting change in our children. Do you want to make a profound impact on your children, your grandchildren, your whole family? Make it your ambition to know God more, to love God first, to love God most.
God’s ancient call to Israel, to know and love the Lord their God with all their heart, soul and strength. rings with relevancy for believers and Christian parents today. We need to recognize and abandon false notions of God so that we night know and love Him as we ought and have our families transformed by the one true God.
What is the roadmap that leads us to know God as we ought and therefore to love Him for who He is and for how He deserves to be loved? We need the authentic, proven word of God so that we might know and love Him in the beauty of His self-disclosed glory. This will have a profound effect on our families.
We must decide what pattern for the family will shape our homes: the world's passing wisdom or God's eternal proven words. The latter leads to God's choicest blessings and this is God's heart for you and your family. He longs to bless your home. He wants to pour out His manifold blessing on you, your spouse, your children, and your grandchildren.
What is God’s perspective on aging parents and how does that differ from the world’s perspective? God calls us to honor our parents spiritually, emotionally and if need be physically. As we show practical, tangible piety toward our parents we can know that obedience does not come empty handed. It brings the smile of God to our lives.
Does God know what it's like to be teenager and to have to live under the authority of parents who do not always understand you? You may be surprised by the answer. The world is constantly attempting to foist its broken designs on believers, particularly as it concerns our families. The marriage relationship in particular is under attack. Deuteronomy 6:1-9 forms the clearest and most forceful call to parents to disciple their children in the truth of Scripture. In order to comprehend how essential this text is, we have to understand a little bit of the background leading up to it.
The only hope for the eternal happiness of our children is in Jesus Christ. We must lead them to the Savior and the road to Him is paved by God's word. We cannot afford biblical illiteracy. The cost is simply too high. We must make it our ambition to know the Bible so that we may lead our loved one to God and in God.
If the spiritual vitality of the family is of such value to God, you can be sure the enemy will attempt to destroy your home. One of the chief ways he does that is by robbing your household of God's sanctifying truth. Whenever truth is blocked from flowing into and nourishing God's people, the impact is devastating, and few places has this been more visible than in the Christian home.
God used the vehicle of the family to bring His Son, our Savior, into this world and through Him the salvation of men, women & children for His eternal glory. This is how important the family is to God. He chose humble trusting parents (Mary & Joseph) to steward the great treasure of Jesus, and he has chosen us, not perfect families but redeemed families, to steward the eternal treasure of our children and through that stewardship to proclaim the gospel to the world.
God longs for us to wrap our arms around His plan for the family and own it, to walk in it. And my friends, in order for God's familial precepts to take root in our hearts, we must first understand how important the family is to Him.
Perhaps you find yourself in a place where the thought of discipling your kids doesn't come from possessing a clear biblical vision regarding this great calling. Perhaps the thought evokes, rather, feelings of inadequacy and weakness. Let God meet you there and unveil His surpassing wisdom and the grace needed to take a step in the right direction. That's what he did for me when I started meeting with my eldest son, Josh.
The Bible never speaks of the spiritual nurturing of children apart from parents. While there is a place for youth ministry in the life of a church, the primary focus for the discipleship of our children should be on nurturing the parent/child relationship. The task is great, but remember we have a great Savior who walks with us and the Spirit of the Lord who will enable and strengthen us for the task God has called us fulfill.
Have you been impacted by the world's view of the parent/child relationship? The culture wants you to believe that parents are simply incapable of relating to, let alone discipling their children. If you believe that or have been made to feel that way, you have been fed a lie.
God has put the eternal treasure of our children in our hands to nurture in His ways so that one day they might embrace our God, follow Him, serve Him, and lead the next generation in the same life-giving path. What a gift and a stewardship!
