With a wealth of poets in the region, Spokane Public Radio presents poetry curated and read by a local poet. Featuring a different reader each week, some pieces will be their own and some pieces will be from poets they admire or find particularly poignant or relevant for the time of airing.
Yvonne Higgins Leach’s second collection of poems, In the Spaces Between Us, hit the shelves fall 2023, published by Kelsay Books. Her first collection, Another Autumn, was published by Cherry Grove Collections in 2014. Her poems have been published in The South Carolina Review, South Dakota Review, Spoon River Review, The Cimarron Review, POEM, and others. Her poems connect to the world through an empathetic heart seeking to understand the mysteries of the human experience. She spent decades balancing a career in communications and public relations, raising a family, and pursuing her love of writing poetry. Her latest passion is working with shelter dogs. She splits her time living on Vashon Island and in Spokane, Washington.
Dennis Held lives in the Vinegar Flats neighborhood of Spokane, Washington, where he is a book editor and community organizer. His first book of poetry, Betting on the Night, was published by Lost Horse Press; his second, Ourself, by Gribble Press. His most recent collection, Not Me, Exactly, was published in 2020 by Hand to Mouth Press. His essay: What I’ll Miss, is published in Pushcart Prize 2022, the best of the small press. He lives along Hangman Creek and watches for kingfishers.
