My thoughts about doing an EveningTheScore live concert film, my attempts to start that process and how COVID threw a very disheartening wall of “No” in my face (at least in reference to my venue of choice), the ways that that “No” got me thinking about my options for returning that well swung shot back into the Universe’s side of the court, some of the ways that keeping this podcast going just feels like a waste of everyone’s time…sometimes, and how a trip down memory lane of just a couple dozen of the early episodes this podcast got me to stop thinking like that.

The Mormon tradition of Family Home Evening, how that tradition changed my life, how COVID took it away from me, and my feelings as it starts to come back into my life, how the pandemic appears to be affecting people’s efforts to achieve notoriety or to maintain attention that they’ve already gained, the genius that is the 90’s rock band The Presidents of the Unites States of America, a much-too-short list of some great drummers in alternative rock music, the story of how I met and became friend’s with Arizona ska/punk drummer legend Johnny Lincoln (and how we might get to work together again on a project very soon), how social media may have landed me as a soon-to-be guest on another prominent Arizona podcast, the fun that I have geeking out on the experience that the research team of another show will have in doing a deep-dive into my work.

The sadness of a final “no” on the Sitka, Alaska trip, the opportunity that that “no” opened up for me to record and release the new EveningTheScore single “Any Time Now”, how EveningTheScore is a direct reflection of what I love about music, some things I’ve learned from talking with a woman I started seeing recently about why woman tell stories and share their experiences in the way that they do, stand up comedy - the last forum that I want to conquer, my desire to figure out how to have normal relationships with normal people, I get a little heated about how social media has opened up a space for people to emotionally take advantage of each other in the ugliest ways, some ideas I have about “Any Time Now” that might ostracize some listeners, more observations about Trump fanatics (and where the left fails a bit too), and some God talk about the different between submitting and forfeiting.

Some more ravings about the new neck and setup of The Mutt (and some great suggestions I got from Anthony at Covet Guitars), what I’m looking forward about spending a week recording and producing the new EveningTheScore single “Any Time Now” versus making an entire album, some more experiments with microphones to try and find the best way to produce this podcast and present it to you, the ways that the weekly EveningTheScore Saturday night acoustic livestream #EvenInTheCloset (and John Mayer’s IGTV show “Current Mood”) has got me thinking about the nature of this podcast and how I might upgrade the format and reinvigorate the show, how I view and my relationship to money, the power dynamic of certainty within the social construct of our world and how Donald Trump and his followers are not affecting the influence that I think they think they are, some new realizations about how my own insecurities manifest in relationships through oversharing and the ways that I’m stumbling through trying a different path in a new relationship, the intensity of me, a conversation with a company called Bridging The Music that got me thinking about the music business and what artists need help with and what we can pretty much do on our own.

I met Justin Miller in the pop punk resurgence in Mesa, Arizona about 10 years ago. His band Burn This for a Friend was tearing up local shows and then hitting the road to promote their music and blow the roof off of venues all over the west coast. After talking to Justin at a recording session at Blue Exit Audio, I decided that he was one of the smartest people I’d ever met. It was a privilege to have him on the podcast and to spend an incredible day with him at the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open. Hear all about the music, golf, and even American politics in this fun and insightful episode.

I met Brian in the North Hills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2002. He was my zone leader during my service there as a Mormon missionary. But he was probably one of the only missionary leaders that I not only liked instantly but also felt like he genuinely liked me and wanted to be a part of my mission experience in the most positive way possible. In the 15+ years since coming home, I’ve thought back on my time with Brian many times with a smile and told stories of the fun we had and the hijinks that he got into that I had only heard about. I’ve wanted to sit down with him and hear him tell his story for a while and I’m so happy we finally made it happen.

John Vento is often called a chameleon in the Pittsburgh music scene; and, while his critics may use the term as a pejorative, Vento views it as a compliment. He understands that they’re motivated by the frustration of their inability to lock him into a specific musical style. After all, the front man for the high-energy, hard-rockin’ bands, The Businessmen, and the Nied’s Hotel Band, is also known for his introspective, brooding solo recordings.
Rather than a drawback, however, Vento considers such diversity to be among his strengths; and his fans agree. They relish sharing his tumultuous trek toward achieving his artistic vision, which he accomplishes by channeling a blend of eclectic influences through his own, raw emotions.
Helping to engineer the roller coaster ride is a stout core of collaborators, including John Randall Fox, Buddy Hall, Tim Hadley, and Frank Ferraro, along with renowned playwright/lyricist, Amy Hartman. Many members of this crew have been with him for more than a decade; and it’s easy to understand why, as Vento consistently showers them with appreciation and accolades. Though a one-of-a-kind performer, he professes a great distaste for the word, “solo,” insisting that, “Without my collaborators, I would not have accomplished anything.”
John’s 2019 MTS release is “Love, Lust and Other Wreckage.” His single, “Rainbows And Lightning” reached the Top 20 on iTunes Canada charts, receiving national and international airplay and charting. John is a January 2019 Billboard Magazine Emerging Artist.

We spent time with her and her family often during my first 6 months in the mission. We laughed a lot. So many great memories playing in their front yard or just sitting in the house and talking. Shortly after her baptism, we lost touch with the family. A classically trained musician, James Lee Baker fuses influences from acoustic singer-songwriters like David Mead, Ellis Paul, John Gorka, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan, and Slaid Cleaves. He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing. Trained briefly by Richard Gilewitz, a renowned fingerstyle guitar player, James Lee’s fingerstyle guitar playing is rich and melodic, pulling listeners into memorable motifs and atmospheres.
In 2017, Baker released a Texas-inspired full-length project called “Home Again.” Harnessing his experience in technology, Baker recruited talented studio session musicians, accessing performers from Los Angeles, Canada, The United Kingdom, and Denver. “Home Again” is a Country-flavored Americana album, rich with instrumentation like dobro, lap steel, fiddle, and harmonica. Current single, “Disappear for the Weekend” is receiving airplay and charting on the New Music Weekly and Airplay Today country charts. The same is also true for his previous single, “Cowtown Blues.”
In March 2018, he released an EP of Folk/Americana songs called The Canadian River. The single of the same title placed #23 on the FolkDJ radio charts in April of 2018, and the song “Two Cageless Birds” went on to be selected for the John O’Hara Songwriting Performance Grant.

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Jeremy Parsons grew up soaking in the sounds of Texas music in the dancehalls of the Lone Star State. Jeremy was always a fan of music, but it wasn't until his later high school years that he discovered his knack for it. Driven by his passion, he taught himself to play the guitar and began to write and perform music.
Over the past decade, Jeremy has played all over the U.S. and in Europe, including numerous venues in Texas. Pulling from the example of Texas performance artists, Jeremy loves to interact with his audience. He captivates the crowd with his genuine personality, unique humor, and heart-felt love of his occupation.
Jeremy draws from his personal experiences to create songs that are keenly perceptive and meaningful. The first single from his latest album, “Things I Need To Say” was the Top 40 Roots Music Report and IndieWorld Report track, "Burn This House Down." The song paints a poignant picture of heartbreak and acceptance that still remains relatable. It will stick with you long after your first listen. That single was followed up by the equally well-received, “Why is the Bluebird Blue” also is a Top 40 Roots Report americana single. “Bluebird” also reached #2 on the Hits You Love pop charts. The videos for both songs were nominated and selected for numerous Film Festivals, including the Jersey Shore Film Festival, Indie’s Best Films Festival, and the Monkey Bread Tree Film Festival, an IMDB-sanctioned film festival.

Hailing from Western Pennsylvania, Gary Burk III’s musical journey began at age 9, while riding along with his dad to their family camp. There was a song playing on the radio...some old-time country tune that touched Gary in a way that would change his life forever. Drawing inspiration from his biggest influences, Alabama, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan, Gary fronts his 3 piece band of outlaws, performing at events across the region.
Gary Burk’s new single, “Friday Night” is being released on MTS Records this spring.

I met Seth Losser when I’d been on my mission for about a year. He became one of my favorite humans the first time I met him. He was serving in another area in the zone so I got to hang out with him every couple of weeks. When we finally got the chance to serve together about six months later, the circumstances were nothing that either of us could have been ready for. And the things that happened in that area affected the next decade and a half of both of our lives.
This interview is why this documentary exists. “Back to the Burgh” is my story and Seth’s story. Our individual journeys away from God. And how God’s love found and redeemed us.

Jake Glaittli was one of the most easy going missionaries I’d ever met. And although Jake was a big part of some of my fondest mission memories, he was also there through one of the toughest parts of my mission experience. As it turns out, Jake’s mission had some pretty rough parts too. He and I talk about everything from the games missionaries play to the price missionaries pay.

I first came across Tomas Costanza in the New York band “Diffuser” while they were touring as the opening act for 90’s rock group the Toadies. I was blown away! And after stumbling across their album “Injury Loves Melody” for sale at a swap meet a few months later, I became a fan. A HUGE fan! And after recently starting to follow Tomas on Instagram and pestering him for an interview, it was my supreme privilege to have this conversation with Tomas about his life in music and his journey through one of the roughest industries in the entertainment business.

I met Serity (Stratton) Rogers when I was in my second area and had been on my mission for about a year. She was brand new to mission life and was absolutely beaming with missionary zeal and with a fragile, vulnerable spirit that made me instantly miss the closeness that I’ve always had with women in my life. It was both fun and deeply moving to sit down with Serity and talk with her about her mission, faith, repentance, and our relationship with God.

Anyone that listens to this podcast knows that I geek out hard over stand-up comedy. “In less than a year, I would be burying a daughter and divorced. I would be alienated from family and friends and alone. I would also be without 2 jobs that I had been at for years. During this time, I would attempt suicide twice, become erratic and confrontational. I had to take my life back. I had to find a way to heal so that I could continue to be a mother, process my new life and accept the inevitable. I had to find my peace, fight and drive.”
