These are cross references, and we think they are one of the most important tools for studying Scripture! These notations help guide you to verses with similar words, theme, or context for the verse you are studying. Scripture interprets Scripture, and this is a key skill to understanding that. Join Autumn and Annabel as they walk through WHY these are important and how to use them!
Does it matter who wrote the Bible? Does it matter who the Bible was written to? Someone’s background, education, and life experiences change the way we perceive what they say. Who we are, what we believe, or where we live all determines how we receive new information and how we may feel about it. When studying Scripture, knowing the author & audience of a particular book or chapter helps us gain insight into what they are saying. We're talking about the different types of translations and how to incorporate them as you study. You may use one Bible for reference and one for readability! Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek: the languages of the original text of Scripture are RICH with meaning and help us understand God's Word even better. While you don't need to be a Biblical language scholar or take a class on Ancient Hebrew to be able to read the Bible, we find that looking up words in their original form can be so meaningful in studying Scripture. Maybe you didn't choose geography as your favorite subject in high school...BUT if we want to deepen our knowledge of Scripture, we've got to understand the geography of the Bible. Without an understanding of geography, we cannot fully comprehend Biblical history. When we know the names, locations, and topography of biblical places, it gives us visualization and comprehension that we wouldn't have otherwise. A melodic line is a succession of notes forming a distinctive sequence. While there are a lot of different notes and sounds that make up a song, the melody is described as a “distinctive sequence.” You can hear it and recognize it above all the other notes. One could say the melody is the THEME of a song. So is there a melodic line in Scripture? Yes!
Jesus is the “melodic line.” Jesus is that central theme. All of it points us back to Jesus.

The Bible is made up of many books by many different authors, but did you know that Bible is ONE BIG STORY from beginning to end?! It is so important that we approach scripture as ONE BIG STORY as we read it and study it. Why?! Well, join Jill and Grizz as they talk through the different elements of this story and why it matters for us!!
Last week, we talked about how we know Scripture is infallible and inerrant, and why that matters! We talked about how to explain the apologetics of the Bible. This week we are talking about how trusting scripture affects the way you read and understand it! Join us to talk about if scripture is still relevant today, if it's okay to pick and choose what scripture we obey, and about the power that scripture has in our lives.
Is the Bible something that I can trust as Truth? We claim that it is the absolute Word of God. That He spoke to us through His Word. That we can know Him through the words written in Scripture. Tune in to the first part of how we know we can trust the Bible so that you can be confident to stand on the Word of God!
Since the beginning of Oh Hey Truth we have wanted to equip women to know God more by teaching them to rightly handle the Word of God; how to read it in context, how to study the bible, how to be confident in the Word. But how we do that over a podcast has always been the big question and a BIG thing to tackle. But this year we are taking it on!

One of the hallmarks of the Christmas story is when the angels appear to the shepherds and proclaim, “Peace on Earth,” in Luke 2:14. By coming to the earth, Jesus took on our conflict so that we could have peace. A world of total peace is a world without sickness, shame, where relationships are stable, where there is no war, death, or conflict. It is what we will receive in heaven. Let us praise Jesus for the GOOD that He is and trust Him with everything! God has made the peace we long for available through Christ. A gift.

The hope of the people of God is not merely a desire or wish. It is a confidence rooted in God’s promise and God’s faithfulness. It is a trust that is rooted in Christ’s trustworthiness and the certainty of His wonderful plan for us. Jesus said, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house there are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I’m going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” John 14:1-3.

Those college decisions can be tricky and hard to navigate as a believer! Can you go to a party as a believer and it bring glory to God? What if I am not drinking? What about being the designated driver? So many questions and thoughts on this topic ladies. The ultimate question as a christian is, "does this honor God?" Those who are persecuted are called "blessed" by Jesus! What is persecution as a believer? Are you being persecuted for your faith? Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. The first thing we learn from this beatitude is that Jesus is concerned with our heart. It is not enough to clean up our act on the outside. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. What does it mean to be merciful? It is easy, especially in our culture today, to think of mercy as looking past people’s sin and just loving them where they are at and allowing their sin to continue. But we have to remember that is not mercy! We have to look at Gods word to truly understand mercy. Join Annabel and Grizz as they talk the merciful!
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. How can we be blessed in our mourning? How can mourning be God glorifying? Mourning is not simply being sad about something, but biblical mourning is also mourning our sin, confessing our sin, and being humble about who we are in light of who God is. What better way to spend our summer than studying and talking about and living out the actual words of Jesus Himself!? The Beatitudes describe the ideal character of someone who loves and follows Christ. Let's dive in and do some self-evaluation of our hearts and minds as we study the Beatitudes.
We used to think that there were two types of people: those who are sexually broken and those who are sexually pure. The truth is, we are all broken and have been since the garden. We all need restoration and healing and Jesus. In this episode, we break down God's design for sexuality, share some personal insights, and talk through the healing we have through the cross and the Word! God is so good to not cast us off but to welcome us in with open arms into a covenant relationship with Him no matter the depth of our sinfulness.
Does God care about what we wear and how we present our bodies? Does He care about modesty? This is such a hot topic with so many optimism, and at the end of the day, we want to be in line with what Scripture says about it! Join Annabel and Grizz as they discuss the why behind modesty.
From the True Love Waits movement to the passed around rose, sexuality has been a taboo and yet in-your-face topic in the church. Altogether, it formed a "purity culture" full of promise rings and no dating rules. Was purity culture toxic and evil? If it was or is, does that mean we're not called to purity? What does scripture say? Does this mean that we can “deconstruct purity”, that it’s just a man made idea and we are free to experience our sexuality however we choose? Jill and Annabel get together to answer these questions on this week's episode!
Long title, clear meaning: becoming who you want to be takes time. Becoming a woman who lives out the Truth of God’s Word is a lifelong endeavor and one worth working towards! It doesn't happen overnight. In our world of instant gratification, we want to encourage you that just because you haven't "arrived" in 2 weeks, doesn't mean you never will. Deciding the woman you want to be takes work and humility and patience. Setting goals, praying for change, and becoming a woman you are proud of is worthy of your time! Are you ready to start the journey? Join Autumn, Grizz, and Jill as they talk through becoming the best version of yourself.
Are you waiting for something? A husband, children, college, a job, healing? Ultimately, waiting on the Lord is our life. Our whole life is creating a life to glorify God while we wait to join Him again in heaven. What do we do with this waiting? How do we act it out well? Waiting, at its core, is about patience. Scripture shows so many examples of patience and, as a fruit of the Spirit, it is something the Spirit empowers us to do as believers. Do you wait with patience, or an anxious heart?
Does it matter what we watch on TV? It's not real life. It's not my life. But scripture tells us to "set your mind on things above, not on earthly things". So what does that mean for us and the shows we watch? Join Annabel and Grizz as they talk about TV and they way it has affected their minds and hearts and how they honor The Lord with what they watch.
The Gospel. Not just Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John! The Gospel can be explained dozens of different ways, but ultimately it is the good news that the Creator of the universe sent His Son into the world to die so that we can receive atonement for our sins. But Jesus did not stay dead, and instead, rose from the grave 3 days later, defeating death so that you can live in eternity with him. This truth fuels our lives and changes hearts and redeems shame and pain. By understanding how to communicate this truth to others, you are able to give HOPE to those without it. Autumn and Annabel discuss ways to communicate the Gospel so you can feel empowered to share with those around you.
Have you ever struggled with guilt or shame? What is the true difference between them? How can we combat these in our day to day life? Do you turn to the Lord, or do you turn to worldly comfort when shame sets in? Grizz and Jill talk through this topic to remind you that shame is not from the Lord.
God's people pray and teach us how to pray. In the episode, praying like Solomon, Autumn talks all things Solomon, his posture in prayer, why he asked for wisdom, and reminds us why we need to be asking for wisdom too! Solomon asked for the wisdom that he knew could only come from God. This made God very happy! We also need help to know what is right and wrong. We have his Word and we get to talk to Him about these things. We are privileged enough to get to ask for that wisdom too!
We are talking about the people of God and how they prayed. King David prayed a lot and we see it all over scripture, especially in the Psalms where he wrote almost half of them. How can you not love and relate to this man? He is one of the most known and referenced people in the Bible. Listen in as we talk about David's cry to God for a clean heart in Psalm 51!
Moses. He was handpicked by God to do so many incredible things in the story of God. On this episode, we talk about his incredible prayer to please see God’s glory! Take 15 minutes and give it a listen and I promise you will be encouraged to go and talk to God! God’s people prayed and it was powerful. We can learn from how they prayed and it helps train us to be faithful women who talk to our Creator.
Prayer is something that is woven throughout the story of God in the Old and New Testament and a part of the lives of the people in these pages. Sometimes we question if prayer “works” but I think thats a tricky thing to think. It makes it about the result of our prayers being what we desire, instead of about us getting to be in an actual relationship with the one who made us, saved us, and desires us to speak to Him.
In this intro episode of a 7 part mini-series, Grizz and Jill talk all things prayer. What God desires is for us to speak to Him, adore Him, come to Him, and He is always listening. We will use this series to talk about the people of God who prayed - we will learn from Moses, Paul, Solomon, Mary and Jesus himself! Join us as we talk about how to pray!
Going home can be hard for everyone. Whether you are a freshman in college coming home for the first time since living on your own or you're 40 years old with your own family and kids, it can be hard to be at home. A lot of times, we are not our best selves when we our home, we fall back into old habits. Or we became a believer or have had a lot of growth after leaving home but are family still treats us like our old self. Or maybe our families aren't believers and we have broken relationships. Whatever it might be, scripture calls us to "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience." How do we do that well? Let's talk about it!
Mary was favored by God. She was chosen to be the virgin who would give birth to God's only son. She was faithful, she was a servant, she was willing, she was humbled to be chosen for such a task. Her immediate response was submission and praying to do whatever God wanted according to His word. Then she sang a song of praise. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Michelle explains why this verse has been impactful in her life and taught her to trust the Lord. Sometimes trusting God can be difficult, but we walk through how we serve a God worthy of our trust!
"Help my unbelief!" We walk through Mark 9:23-27 and discuss how to deal with doubt. Doubt can be crippling in our faith, but Scripture helps us understand how to fight against this temptation. Like all of the people to come before them in the lineage of Christ, Mary and Joseph were chosen by God to be the earthly parents of God's son, Jesus! Does this mean Joseph or Mary were perfect? SOLOMON. The son of David and Bathsheba- a reminder that God can bring good from sin. Solomon was king over Israel, and is considered one of the wisest kings that has ever ruled. He is thought to have written multiple books of the Bible, including Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. He followed God but also struggled with sin. He built the temple and was possibly the wealthiest man of all time. Solomon reminds us of the need for obedience, the beauties of wisdom, and the dangers of power.
King David! He is the most infamous and well-developed person in the Bible besides Jesus himself. He is a type of Christ - pointing us to the coming King. He was a humble king, a shepherd, a man after God's own heart. He was also sinful and lusted and had lots to confess because of his imperfections. David is a man worth learning more about! He did write 70 Psalms, defeat Goliath, take care of the ark of the covenant, name Solomon heir after he died, and cared deeply about God and lived his life to bring HIM glory. Jill and Annabel cover the highlights of David's life in this must listen to episode!

We are so excited to go back to Ruth! Now we have the JOY to talk about her, Boaz, and their son Obed in the context of the lineage of Christ.
In this episode, we look at Christ’s lineage with Salmon and Rahab. Rahab was a Canaanite woman who hid Israelite spies in her home. When the walls in Jericho were brought down, Rahab and her family were able to escape because of her faith in God and salvation of the spies. She married an Israelite man, and they had BOAZ, and thus the line of Jesus continues on. God is intentional about mentioning Rahab in Jesus’ lineage and we are excited to talk about why!
Judah - the fourth born out of the 12 sons of Jacob. His name means praise but is he really worthy of it? He sold is brother Joseph into slavery and did not deal faithfully with his daughter- in-law Tamar. Still- this story ends with a blessing prophesying that the Messianic line would come through him. God reminds us of His unmerited grace to the undeserved and unlikely. Grizz and Michelle talk about Judah and Tamar, then all the way through Nashon in this week's Lineage of Christ episode!
JACOB. God changes his name to Israel, literally "wrestles with God". In the episode, we talk about that wrestling match, Jacob's ladder, his brotherly rivalry (and deception!) with Esau, being Isaac's son, and Jacob's own son Joseph. There is a continued theme on God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises EVEN as His people are sinful. Jacob is far from perfect. He is deceitful and pretty self focused at times. And yet God chose him to be in His Son's lineage! Listen along as Grizz and Autumn discuss Israel and all his twelve tribes!
Isaac- son of Abraham and father of Jacob. In his youth, he was almost sacrificed before God stepped in to save him. As a man, he met and married Rebekah, an Israelite woman brought to Canaanite land to be with him. God promised Isaac that he would give him the land he was sojourning in and that his offspring would be multiplied as the stars in the heavens. Through Isaac, the first generation of the Abrahamic covenant would be fulfilled! Jill, Grizz, and Autumn get together to discuss this patriarch!
ABRAHAM! The genealogy or lineage of Christ is not the most talked about thing in the Bible but it is SUPER important and so relevant to our daily walk with God. Abraham is labeled a lot of things in culture and in the Bible. As we wrap up the book of Ruth, we are THANKFUL the Lord includes this story in His Word. It has reminded us of God's sovereignty and His loyal love. Even in the small moments of our lives, we can be grateful that the Lord's plan will always be GOOD and for our good. Grizz and Autumn talk about how much Ruth points us to Jesus, and how He will be born from the line of Naomi and Ruth. Even through famine, death, and bitterness, the Lord was sovereign over it all, pointing to His Son and our salvation.
In this epic climax of the book of Ruth, we FINALLY get to meet this other family member- who is he? Why is Boaz meeting him at a gate? What is this whole deal with a sandal? We dive into the history behind this term "kinsman-redeemer" but it is pointing us to so much more. Redeem: to buy back, to regain possession of. Jesus has bought us back from sin and death through the payment of His blood. Grizz and Michelle dive into this and more in this week's episode!
Ever read Ruth chapter 3 and been like "what is going on?" We get it! This section of Scripture can be confusing, especially based on what we've already learned about Ruth and Boaz's character! In this week's episode, Autumn and Annabel talk about strategic righteousness- how Naomi made a PLAN to be redeemed and for Ruth and Boaz to honor the Lord. As we follow Jesus, we often have to be purposeful and intentional about pursuing holiness. It isn't always easy, but it is always worth it!
Throughout the book of Ruth, we see Ruth question why GOOD things have happened to her instead of bad. Ruth is humble and a great picture of how to respond to the Lord’s grace in our lives. The Lord uses Boaz to demonstrate His kindness. The fact that Boaz goes above and beyond to demonstrate kindness to a foreigner- that goes beyond the required law. Such a picture of God’s kindness to us- foreigners who deserve wrath as a requirement of the law, but instead receive GRACE. We DESERVE punishment, but instead receive SALVATION! In this episode, Grizz, Michelle, and Jill discuss how God's merciful providence is demonstrated in Ruth 2:8-23.

Hope in the Greek of the New Testament is elpis, which is defined as expectation of what is sure, “confidence”, the “joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation”. Scripture talks in depth about this hope, and we talk about what we find our hope in, especially during this season.

You don’t have to be a Christian living in America to have interacted with the church in some way. In America (and especially in Texas where we are), you can see one on almost every street corner. And unfortunately, not everyone has positive feelings towards the church depending on what their experience was.
Why is it important that we discuss THE CHURCH on the B.B. series? Well, it is a huge part of Christianity, and that isn’t just because it is a building we meet in. Scripture says WE are the Church!

Bible Basics, say what?!?! Or another name for our new Fall series could be Simple Seminary, What I didn't know I didn't know, Bible Literacy 101, or Know What You Believe! This is a series for all of us believers. It takes us back to the basics. Back to the gospel, back to Jesus, back to Creation and the big story of God. On today's episode we address "What is the Gospel?," and we will dive into topics like Can I lose my salvation, Is grace enough, and tons more. We hope you will be refreshed and reminded of the goodness of God.
In today’s episode, we are talking about James 2 which tells us that, “faith without works is dead.” But aren’t we saved by faith? YES! Listen and learn about how these two truths don’t contradict each other, but to who both Paul and James are addressing when they say these things and why. "Fear Not" is the most given command in all of scripture, making it pretty clear that God does not desire for His children to live in fear. But we do, don't we? We might not always experience life threatening fear, but what about daily anxieties? Isn't anxiety a symptom of fear? And what about the fear of God?
On today's episode, Annabel and Jill dive into the topic of fear and what our response as believers should be in the midst of fear.
As we continue our "Doers of the Word" series we look at what scripture says about serving. As believers we are called to serve one another. But we can get caught up in the what, when, and where of how we serve. Sometimes so much that we end up not serving at all because we don't seek out the opportunity because it doesn't fit in with our schedule or our gifting. But we also know that James 2:14-17 says that faith without works is dead and we believe that serving the body of Christ is one of the true marks of a believer.

In Philippians 4:8 it tell us what we are to think on: what is true, honorable, pure, just, lovely, commendable, excellent, or anything that is worthy of praise. Not worldly praise. This week, we will be digging more into to the “C” of C.I.A. which is “Comprehension.” The comprehension phase is the first phase of study when going through a new passage. Basically, this is answering the question, “what does this text say?” A couple of tools we can use within the comprehension phase include: circling repeated words, looking up definitions to words in the text, and writing down your questions.
Paul talks about His life purpose of advancing the gospel no matter what the circumstances in these verses of Philippians. He is writing to the church of Philippi while on house arrest awaiting trial. And Paul tells the Philippians to Rejoice!
