The nonprofit organization will hold one of its main fundraisers— “CARE to Laugh”—on April 3 in Fairfield.

Demand at the donor-supported organization, which recently launched its second mobile food pantry, has grown by 2.5 times since the onset of the pandemic.
This week, we talk to New Canaan Police Officer Nicole Vartuli about electric bikes or “e-bikes,” whose misuse here is causing serious safety concerns. Please also note that Officer Vartuli will be at New Canaan Library from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 to educate the community on scooter and motorized bike safety. During that event—details here—the organization Northeast Community Cycles will collect bicycles at an outdoor drop-off location. This spring, after raising money at its biennial sales and at the Farmer’s Market, the organization gave away $24,000 in grants to 11 deserving local agencies.

In the midst of the viral Ice Bucket Challenge that swept across the world at the time, his family designed a Hot Pepper Challenge that raised more than $700,000 in its own right for ALS Therapy Development Institute. More recently, the Haberstrohs have been one of the ALS families advocating for Major League Baseball to institute Lou Gehrig Day to raise awareness of the disease. And this summer, on June 2, all 30 MLB teams will observe Lou Gehrig Day. We talk to Steve about his family, about ALS and about his feelings as this milestone summer nears.

The Ponus Ridge Chapel has stood along Ponus between Frogtown and Davenport Ridge for more than 100 years, a stone structure that began its life as a place of worship and became a hub of neighborhood activity, for much of its life owned and operated by an association. In the past five decades, as the association and Chapel’s use became inactive, the building fell into vacancy and disrepair, with a leaky roof that’s taken a severe toll on its integrity and appearance. Ainsley and Brendan Hayes moved in a decade ago. Following years of legal wrangling, they finally acquired it last winter and as soon as the weather broke, launched a restoration project with Ted Sihpol of New Canaan-based Renaissance Partners on the job as general contractor. This week, that restoration project is marking a major milestone with the installation of a new roof.
