Please welcome our guest today, Andria Smith, aka @thehumoroushomeschooler. After working for a number of years in public education, Andria was "forced" into homeschooling her two children, ages 5 and 9, during the pandemic. She never dreamed she would fall in love with homeschooling as she has, tho, and isn't looking back. I found her on Instagram, where she is spot-on and "keepin' it real" about the homeschool momma life. What a blast it was talking to her - and I know you'll love listening in, too! Go follow her if you don't already - @thehumoroushomeschooler

"Down the road from nowhere in small-town, USA (as a friend of mine used to say) lives today's guest, Caleb Allen (so please forgive the periodic sound quirks from spotty wifi!). He joins us as the next guest in our series of "Homeschool Graduates: Where Are They Now?" Caleb was home-educated in the "way back when" years of homeschooling and pushed through learning with dyslexia, which remained undiagnosed until he was in college. To paraphrase Shakespeare's famous soliloquy"To break or not to break? That is the question..." Sometimes it's hard to decide whether we want to take a "hard stop" on homeschooling or just back off the studies for a bit. And this is the time of year when it may be uppermost in your mind! But no worries - you can choose to do one at some point and the other at another point. (Part of the beauty of homeschooling, my friend.) In today's episode, Pat and Tracey talk about different options and the pros and cons of each...

What kind of breaks does your family take?

We don't only talk about what jobs kids can work at, but WHY you might want them to even have a job! There are lots of benefits to allowing your teens to work, not the least of which is this piece of research: studies have shown that teens who worked in the summer had greater job satisfaction and greater future earnings than those who didn’t. But there are also issues to keep your eyes open for as a parent. So no matter how you feel about "working teens" you'll find this episode engaging. Does your teen have a part-time job?

I dunno, is it only me? We have five grown-and-flown kiddos, and while I remember them as "littles" at Christmases long ago, I also remember Christmases during the teen years. But...perhaps not all of them as fondly as others...if you get my drift.

Because finding awesome Christmas gifts for the little ones was always oh-so-much easier than finding them for my teens!

Tracey and I had a conversation about that recently, but we decided to DO something about it (unlike those conversations people have about the weather. You know: "People are always talking about the weather but nobody ever does anything about it!" #dadjokes).

We came up with a list of awesome Christmas gift ideas for teens! Although, you can use these for birthday gifts, too, or just "I love you!" presents...)

So if you're still lacking a gift or two for your teen, you're welcome to pour yourself a cuppa, grab your phone or a notebook, and enjoy our latest candid conversation. (For your convenience, I posted links to the items we talked about below the recording.)

Find the extended show notes, including links to the gifts we mention, here: https://breakthroughhomeschooling.com/awesome-christmas-gifts-for-teens

Tracey Hagerman talks about the motivation to write her book “The Happy Homeschooler,” and how it can help homeschool moms balance their lives and homeschools to avoid premature feelings of burnout. She also explains her “homeschool formula” and the one area that many moms may find a welcome addition (with benefits for everyone!) to their homeschool. She's got a lot to say about reading, too, and you’ll especially be interested in her strategies for the "reluctant reader" ;-)

We kept this interview to as close to 30 minutes as I could, but it was hard! Let me introduce you to Dwane Thomas, creator of Visual Latin and Word Up! Much more than "just" a language teacher, he continues to embody the concept of a lifestyle of learning. During our altogether-too-brief time, he talks about the "risks" of homeschooling, what he really thinks about Latin, interesting facts about the headwaters of the Mississippi River, and the roots of the word "infantry." (And yeah, it's really all connected!) Finally, he shares some hard-earned words of advice to other homeschool dads on the journey. Truly an episode you'll want to share!

Owning anything - emotions, your responsibilities, your actions - is key to growing into becoming a responsible adult. Owning your own education is key to developing a lifestyle of learning. Starting them on this track starts early, but has far-reaching effects. Once your children realize that they don't need to be spoonfed, that they're "masters of their own fate", so to speak, there won't be any challenge they can't meet!

Have you ever asked that question? Honestly, both of us have, and we couldn't figure out how there could be a new homeschooling mom on the planet who hasn't! The initial answer that most (all?) of us received might have been as frustrating to you as it was to us...so we presented some ideas and examples - and shared our own days - to give you an idea of how to plan your own. Caveat: don't compare what you're doing with what we talk about if it inspires "momma guilt" rather than inspiration, ok? We're on your side friends; this is a judgment-free zone!

One of the things that makes homeschooling a viable, even preferable, alternative to the form of education we're all used to is that we have the ability - can I say even the responsibility? - to make learning engaging and exciting for our children. And YES, you can do that, too!

And who knows? In the process, you may even adopt a fresh and new attitude about learning for yourself!

A word of the year based on THE Word can be a valuable lens with (at least) two marvelous benefits. You can use it to craft a vision for your year as well as a filter through which you can confidently make better decisions for you, your family, and your homeschool. (Yes, your homeschool, too!) Discover this concept for yourself and present it to your children to give them the opportunity to develop a forward-thinking and Biblical approach to their own lives.
